Weekly Run Down for 7.15.19-7.21.19 – Birthday Week

ru

Not mine but one of the Sole Sisters turned 70!! And we celebrated, of course!!

And it was also WEEK 3 for NYCM Training.

Last Week

  • Monday – For the first time in a while, none of my friends were free to run. So I headed to my local rail trail and ran alone (with my podcasts). My legs just were not feeling the run it but it got done.

returned some books to the mini library and saw the beginnings on a new mural

  • Tuesday Had a webinar to attend after work so scheduled a rest day instead of a run.
  • Wednesday – Again, there was a tempting evening ice cream group run but also an author was giving a talk locally. She wrote:

Run Like a Girl 365 Days a Year: A Practical, Personal, Inspirational Guide for Women Athletes by [Samuels, Mina]

I had planned to squeeze in some miles before the talk but instead, with rain and thunderstorms in the forecast, I got up early and ran before work. Holy Humidity!!

even with the temps & humidity, my run was so good – much more pep in the legs in the morning.

The talk was great and I knew a few of the runners there. And yes, it rained HARD on and off all day.

a cool lady who runs in NYC

  • Thursday – Since I enjoyed last week’s trail run so much, I decided to participate again today. Several of my running friends were also planning to go. It was very humid but I ran pretty hard since it was not that technical.  Could I be addicted to trails?

  • Friday – My usual rest day before a race day. I paid a visit to my chiro for a monthly tune-up. Also my usual Friday night mah jongg game.

our number varies from 3-12 players but almost everyone came tonight so we took a pic.

  • Saturday – Long run Saturday with the Sole Sisters.

so so humid

Because I was running longer than the others, I ran 3 miles before we gathered at the Corning bike path. Rail Trail. We are currently experiencing a heat wave (with high humidity as well as temps).

boy did this pool feel good on this hot hot day

After the run, we went to one of the runner’s house for a book discussion (Kathrine Switzer’s Marathon Woman), lunch, swimming (in her new pool) and a birthday party.

  • Sunday – And of course, it was Boating Sunday on Lake George. I have been so lucky that the rain has not interfered with boating on the weekends. It was another very humid and hot day. Even my stepson and his new wife came along for the first time. We gave them a tour of our favorite spots on the lake.  Al in all, another fun day.

Weekly Run Down for 7.8.19-7.14.19: Just work, running and a 5k

ru

I did not have to do any of my runs solo this week. Woo Hoo! And it was also WEEK 2 for NYCM Training. 16 more to go but who’s counting? LOL

Last Week

  • Monday – I was excited today to have company on my after work run. The rail trail was the most convenient for the four of us who chose to come. In order to run with my slower friends, I ran fast and then circled back. I was able to get an extra mile in that way and not be running alone the whole time.

that stretching was just for the pic lol

  • Tuesday Had a hair appointment so scheduled a rest day instead of a run.
  • Wednesday – A post work run at the Corning bike path. Since I had a 5k planned for Saturday, I decided to switch things around and run 6 miles today rather than my usual 3. I was very tempted to do some social running. There were several opportunities but with my work location and the traffic, I thought better of it. So glad my running friend Heidi joined me on this sweaty (90 degrees and HUMID) slogfest.

  • Thursday – Since I did not run with the running groups the day before, I decided to participate in a group (ARE) trail run today. Several of my running friends were planning to go as well. It rained most of the day and I hesitated plus I was a little nervous since I am not comfortable on trails.

I got there early and hiked around a bit. It was so pretty.

Eventually everyone arrived. I got introduced as a newbie to the trail run series this year. I also bumped into a old friend from tennis. Susie & I  ran together for about half of the course and then I lost her but made a new friend, Melanie, whom I chatted with and ran the rest. Yes I ran. I planned to walk but it was so fun. I can’t wait to go next week.

Afterwards a bunch of friends went out to dinner nearby.

my friend Chris’ pic

  • Friday – My usual rest day before a race day. Also my usual Friday night mah jongg game.
  • Saturday – Race Day.  Silks and Satins 5k – one of my favorite summer races. Unfortunately I was not feeling great but I had committed to go and so I went. I was glad that I did. However, the lack of shade and warm temps made me feel really nauseous the whole race. But I did my best (and didn’t puke 🙂 ) and even won my age group.

met up with a friend, made a new friend…looking forward to a re-do with my next 5k in August.

When the race was over, I was happy that I had already done my long run on Wednesday and could join my running friends for brunch.

  • Sunday – And of course, it was Boating Sunday on Lake George. And again the weather was perfect.

Weekly Run Down for 7.1.19-7.7.19: Holiday Week and No Work Travel

ru

Two days of boating, only four days of work and no work travel.  Great week! And it was also WEEK 1 for NYCM Training. 17 more weeks to go!

Last Week

  • Monday – The rain over the weekend cooled down the humidity but not really the temps. I was glad to have had company on my after work run at UAlbany.

there was a lot of walking and talking but a mile is a mile is a mile

  • Tuesday I thought about playing tennis but it was a nice day so I chose running instead. Since it was a last minute decision, I was solo. I chose Washington Park because I had not run there in a while.

another slow one but it is done

  • Wednesday – Yup, three days in a row of running but two rest days to follow. Today I was with my friend Heidi, whom I had not seen in a month. We ran on the rail trail near my home. And it was HOT!! (over 90 degrees!)

  • Thursday – Woo Hoo! Day off. Many of my friends were running a July 4th race but as I always do, I headed up to spend the day on the lake with the hubby. No place I’d rather be on a hot day (not even racing).

cooling off on the boat followed by fireworks at the marina

  • Friday – Unfortunately I was back at work. A quiet day since many people took the day off. Then there was mah jongg in the evening.
  • Saturday – Long run Saturday with the Sole Sisters. Still not running really long but longer than the week days.  We chose the Zim Smith Trail (because we like to eat at Leah’s Cakery after.) It was very hot and very humid. Although there were 7 of us, we all ran solo since we had different distances to run and we run at different paces. Still a fun time as we chatted a long time at brunch.

always glad when I have lots of friends to run with (even if the weather is challenging)

  • Sunday – Rest Day! And Boating Sunday!! The weather had cooled down from yesterday’s rain but it was still a lovely sunny day on the lake.

even had company from a duck while reading on the back of the boat

Weekly Run Down: 6.10.19-6.16.19: a New York (City) State of Mind

ru

Last Week –

  • Monday – Since I had run a race the day before and had a race scheduled for the next day, after arriving in Manhattan, trekking to and from Queens, I met Cari and we just WALKED (rather than ran) along the High Line (the rain even stopped)

fun time chatting and getting in our steps

and afterward we walked to the top of the Vessel. The plan included a sunset view but we got a foggy one instead. Still worth the steps.

  • Tuesday After a long work day, I rushed back to my hotel to change and then hopped the subway to run the Building Brooklyn 5K – an inaugural race in (hilly) Prospect Park. I was pooped but no matter what the outcome, I have never regretted a race. Definitely slower than the last time I ran this course but I won my age group and there was ice cream post race. So win win.

  • Wednesday – No time for running since I had to take the train back home after work.

view from the train ride

  • Thursday – I actually cancelled dinner plans with a friend after work. I had hoped to run before work (and the rain) but I had a car appt. Instead I squeezed in a run followed by shopping and unpacking.

the geese and I beat the rain – hooray

  • Friday – Rest day because I was hosting mah jongg at my house (and had to clean).
  • Saturday – It was a hard decision but I decided not to run a local 5k. Instead I met my Sole Sisters for a run. 8 miles done for Gabe. Of course it was followed by a delightful brunch.

Afterward since rain was predicted for Sunday, I drove up to the lake for a day of boating and relaxing.

Notice what I was reading…really good so far. I couldn’t put it down.

  • Sunday – Rainy day! Time to do some de-cluttering! And then lunch out for Father’s Day with the hubby, my stepson & his wife.

Weekly Run Down – 6.3.19-6.9.19: Another week, another 5k

ru

Last Week –

  • Monday – Although I did run the two days prior, it was not raining and I was meeting a friend for a later dinner, so I squeezed in a few miles on the trail trail.

  • Tuesday Finally a rest day but I did sub for a friend and played tennis (in the group I used to play in on Tuesdays). I hadn’t played since Florida but it was still fun catching up with friends on the court and afterwards at dinner.

  • Wednesday – Ice Cream group run #1 and Global Running Day.

You know I am all over anything that includes ice cream. Just in case, I did bail on the run since thunderstorms were predicted, I walked my Virtual Run during lunch.

The rain did hold off. But it was very humid and the ice cream was a welcome post-run treat.

there are few things better than running with friends + ice cream

  • Thursday – Another rest day due to a much needed hair appt. I did get in a pre-work and lunch time walk.

viewed from my walk

  • Friday – A quick run after work and before my weekly mah jongg game.

at the Corning Bike trail along the Hudson R. A steamy run but not complaining. Better than cold and rain.

  • Saturday – Many 5ks to choose from today but I decided instead of running to volunteer at a race.  My fellow Sole Sister, Chris, was hosting a water stop at her house (which was on the race course).  It was so rewarding to participate in this way (I need to volunteer more often) and the post race barbecue rocked, as well.

  • Sunday – I have race fever.  Two races today. First the Betar Byway 5k followed by the Moreau Mile.  Both I have already run in the past but several years ago. It was a beautiful course but holy hills!

a hard race but won my age group in BOTH races (though I didn’t stay to get my medals) – love the tech tank in purple

After the race, I headed up North to go boating with the hubby. It was a gorgeous day to relax on the water in the sun!!

and I did change into my bathing suit and went into the water for about a sec. Brrrr

Weekly Run Down: 5.27.19-6.2.19 – A movie week and a race!

ru

It was only a 5k and I hadn’t trained for it but it was a race that I always look forward to. I haven’t gone to the movies in ages and I saw TWO this week.

Last Week –

  • Monday – Day off for the Memorial Day holiday. Started the day with a 4.5 mile run with running friend Barbara. It was first time that we’ve run together since she broke her elbow in March. It was great catching up. No pics even though we did run/walk because I guess I was too busy talking and then when we were done, I bumped into an old running friend that I didn’t seen in awhile.

Spent most of the rest of the day outdoors gardening. Boy, do I love this sunshine and warm temps!

  • Tuesday – Rest day because I was belatedly celebrating my birthday with my BFF. We went out to dinner and a movie.
Photograph (2019 poster).png

definitely thought provoking and an interesting ending – I like foreign films for that reason

  • Wednesday – I went to the 2nd SOAR run after work. It was a trail run this week and I kept my fingers crossed for no rain (although I knew that it would be muddy.) It was a clinic and we learned HOW to run trails.  It was actually fun. Some of the runners quit after the first loop but I continued with a friend and it was more scenic than the first loop. Glad I did it (without trail shoes no less). Unfortunately my schedule is pretty full and I cannot participate in any of the Thursday trail runs in June. I know trail racing is not in any of my future plans but maybe I will become a trail runner.

  • Thursday – There was a club trail run that evening but I decided to instead run right after work close to home

hooray for sunshine on the Corning bike trail

and then head to the expo.

went at the perfect time and met so many friends there

  • Friday – Rest Day!!
  • Saturday – Race Day! Today I ran the Freihofer Run for Women, a 5k that I have run 12 times (every year). And it did not disappoint. The atmosphere is the best and I love spending the morning with friends.  The race itself is secondary.

not a PR. Not even a course PR but I was thrilled to have negatives splits, a sub 28 finish,  zero injuries and a post race brunch with friends.

The hubby & I thought that we might go to the lake in the afternoon but the forecast originally was for rain…that never happened (never believe the weather app). Instead, I did errands, cleaning, gardening and then we went out to dinner.

  • Sunday – Yesterday I had planned to run 7 miles. I ran 1 mile or so before the 5k race so that was only 4 miles. And I went out to lunch and dinner.  In other words, I needed to run today. I wanted to 7 but it was so warm and humid, I was glad to get in 5. I went out too late (and Barbara had already run) so I was solo on the trail with only my podcasts to keep me company.

I came home from the run (and the gym) and it had started to rain.  Instead of gardening, the hubby and I went to the movies.

not bad…not great. Bohemian Rhapsody was better.

Weekly Run Down – 5.13.19-5.19.19: Home Sweet Home

ru

Back to my normal schedule…plus a weekday race and a weekend Half Marathon. Maybe not so normal to most.. lol

Last Week –

  • Monday – Since my run got rained out the day before, rain was predicted for the afternoon and the day after, I felt compelled to drag myself out of bed at 5:30 am to run before work.  It has been years since I have done a pre-work run.  Besides being tired, hungry and over-dressed, it wasn’t too bad.

neighborhood views

I felt guilty but I skipped my FTC group run… I am sure my die hard friends did the workout in the rain. (yup they did!)

  • Tuesday A rest day, only because it was raining and I had a chiro appt. I did stop off for a few minutes at the gym on my way home.

after 3 days of rain, only flowers from Trader Joes could cheer me up (and my cat photobomber)

  • Wednesday – I skipped the SOAR run two weeks ago but I decided to go today. It’s a new group of women runners that run in different locations every two weeks at 6 pm (perfect for those who work!) I chatted with some old friends and even made some new ones.

They asked us to pair up so I ran with Colleen (whom I had worked with for 10 years at my last job) and we chatted the whole time.

After the run, I rushed off to the mall where I met my BFF. We did some walking and gabbing.

  • Thursday – For the third year in a row, I participated with some of my co-workers (and 10,000 others) in the Workforce Challenge Race. This year, at least they had corrals but it was still so congested for the entire 3.5 miles. Again, I ran just for fun and it was fun.

survived the heat (and a stiff neck) and had a course PR.

  • Friday – More rain but a scheduled rest day. Just worked, went for a lunch walk (when the rain stopped)

lunch walk view

Then stopped by the STEM celebration after and played mah jongg in the evening.

  • Saturday – Catch up day on the home front. Laundry, cleaning, weeding.  Then we decided to take a trip up to Lake George.

We didn’t take the boat out for a ride but we walked to the Sagamore Hotel and had my belated birthday dinner out.  I had to carb load for the race the next day anyway.

great view and great food (which was followed by a root beer float on the way home)

  • Sunday – Today with some running buddies, I ran the inaugural Great Sacandaga Half Marathon. It was a little too warm (but no rain) and my long runs in preparation have been 3 miles so it turned out to be a struggle but in a good way. The course was challenging but I won my first trophy ever (even though my time was 2 minutes slower than my last half.) Afterwards, we all went out to lunch on the lake to celebrate.

Weekly Run Down – 4.22.19-4.28.19 – Chocolate and NYC

ru

This was planned forever ago but our girls weekend to NYC happened and it was a blast. And then next week, I’m off to Florida for a 8 day vacation with my tennis friends.

Last week

  • Monday – So today was week 6 of the Freihofer Challenge Training (FTC) group. I had planned on doing my long run on Saturday so I could tackle the “advanced” drills today. Well, the weather did not cooperate and I ran 4 on Saturday and 8 on Sunday. That meant, my legs would protest if I encouraged them to run fast.  Once more, I wimped out and ran with the “Beginner” group – Better safe than sorry is my philosophy (esp. with a 15k and a half marathon coming up.)

twinning

  • Tuesday Rest day finally. I hadn’t played tennis in forever so I decided to sub in my old group. It was fun playing and catching up over dinner. I have resumed my short lunch time walks too.

greenery = flowers & Starbucks

  • Wednesday – I had planned to run with the FTC group at 6 pm near where I live. Then, there was this fun event:

But after standing for 8 hours in uncomfortable shoes, I was too pooped to do either.  Instead, I stopped off on my way home at the Corning Bike Path. The run sucked but the scenery was good.

  • Thursday – One more run before the race. I decided on a quick one at UAlbany and then home to pack. A little bit more energy than the day before but not much.

jumping in excitement for my weekend away

  • Friday – Off to my girls weekend away. After checking into our hotel in Brooklyn, we headed to the expo and then to carb load with pizza to prepare for the next morning’s race.

  • Saturday – Today a group of the Sole Sisters ran the Hot Chocolate 15k in Brooklyn. Not an easy race but a fun one. We all met our goals and ate lots of chocolate.

not a PR but negative splits, 2nd in my AG and NO PAIN!!

After the race, we spent the rest of the day in Manhattan. This included a Broadway show (Avenue Q), and dinner near Times Square.

If you are wondering who is that guy. One runner in our group got injured so my friend Stan subbed for her (in the ALL of our planned activities).

  • Sunday – Another full day planned for our group. Lunch in the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, visit to the Cherry Blossom Festival there, then back to Manhattan.

We checked our luggage in Macys (for free) and then climbed to the top of the Vessel at Hudson Yards before heading home that night.

Such a fun weekend away. We are already trying to figure out what to do for our next one.

Weekly Run Down for 4.15.19-4.21.19 – Recovery and Return to Training

ru

I survived Half Marathon #36 but I still have 2 15ks and another half marathon in the next few months to train for.

Last week

  • Monday – So today was week 5 of the Freihofer Challenge Training (FTC) group.  Finally a session where I had not run the day before. However, I did run 13.1 miles two days before and my uninjured leg seemed sore. It rained most of the day and the temps really dropped from the weekend. It was also VERY windy. (out came the winter running gear.) Hopefully next Monday, I’ll do some Advanced drills but not today.

  • Tuesday My leg felt better today so I met Christina for a short after work run. We decided on the Corning Bike Path since it was close to where I was working.  Even had a little sun to combat the wind.

  • Wednesday – Rest day after a long work day.  A fun evening at my monthly tennis meet-up.

  • Thursday – Another after work run. With Christina again at the same location as Tuesday. No sun today but less wind.

  • Friday – Rest day and the first night of Passover. I celebrated it at our annual Mah Jongg seder.
  • Saturday – Long Run Saturday. Lots of options.  FTC run or Rabbit Ramble 4m race or just a long run. But it was raining, I am a weather wimp and almost bailed on the whole thing. But I did go to FTC, even ran 4 very speedy miles with the Advanced group. Because the skies opened up, instead of continuing our miles, we went out to brunch.

  • Sunday – Since I only ran 4 on Saturday, this morning I did my long run. The weather was absolutely perfect. I met Deidre & Christina at the Nisky bike trail (where we have not run since fall). We did 8 miles together with varying intervals and it was almost painless.

Easter Sunday and dinner with the fam…yes, I celebrate all.the.holidays.  It’s all about the food. LOL

Weekly Run Down for 4.8.19-4.14.19 – Race Week…Again

ru

Race Week…Half Marathon #36.

Last week

  • Monday – So today was week 4 of the Freihofer Challenge Training (FTC) group. As it always happens, it was the day after a race or long run.  Still it’s fun to see all my “advanced group” friends.  And for once the weather was not freezing or windy. I joined the Intermediate group (to avoid the nasty speed drills) and ran with no walk breaks. Some in that group are pretty speedy too so it was a good workout.

  • Tuesday A rest day finally and I met up with injured Barbara to walk, eat and catch up.

Champ says keep those Brooks running shoes…I think I may

  • Wednesday – As I did last week, I decided to join another FTC group to run near where I live. The Advanced group was smaller than last week (just 4) and I ran an easy 2 mile loop with them (and one more solo rather than repeating the loop).

  • Thursday – .It’s taper time (not that I really needed one).  I visited my chiro one last time (for some taping), picked up my bib for Saturday’s race, used the arm machines at the free gym and met my BFF at the mall to get in some steps (and chat.)

  • Friday – More rest time scheduled, stop at the library, carb loading and mah jongg.
  • Saturday -. Today I ran my 36th Half Marathon – Helderberg to Hudson Half Marathon, an inaugural, downhill, local race. Who knew a downhill race could be so hard? Holy aching quads.  And the temps went from winter to summer (humid and almost 70).  Still I had fun and enjoyed seeing so many running friends – old and new.

no calf pain (everything else hurt lol) and my time was almost 5 min faster than NYC 3 weeks ago.

  • Sunday – Rest day, of course but I was plenty busy…decluttering my closets, getting the hubby’s phone fixed, grocery shopping, yard work, cooking, cleaning, and finally my taxes.

trying my hand at succulents – any advice?
