Weekly Run Down for 9.30-10.6.19: Work Travel and Fun Travel

ru

Travel and more travel. First to Long Island for work and then at the end of the week to NYC for a 10k and a Broadway show

NYCM training may have taken a back seat this week. 33 on the schedule.  Less than 13 miles completed!!!!!!!!

Last Week

  • Monday  – After a very long drive to Ronkonkoma and set up, I checked into my hotel and looked for a place to run. Someone at the hotel recommended Blydenburgh Park. And it was lovely. Lots of trails intended for horse back riding I believe.

so many swans on the lake and deer in the woods

  • Tuesday – Long work day and no time to run. I had to drive to Uniondale and check into another hotel and then drive to Bellmore to have dinner with two high school friends. Lots of driving but always fun to reconnect with old friends and laugh about the old days.

yes they are twins!

  • Wednesday – Another forced rest day since I had to go to work extra early and fight the traffic for a long drive home (5.5 hours!). I thought about an early morning but it was dark and I hate the mill. Besides I was pooped. Interesting weather. Left LI at 92 degree and arrived home at 52 degrees.
  • Thursday – Finally a run. And I was supposed to meet some friends to run locally after work. RAIN!!!!!!!! Don’t be shocked but I actually ran on the treadmill at the gym. Desperate measures. I.Hated.Every.Second.

  • Friday – Another Rest day.  Bus to NYC. After I checked into my hotel, I headed out to pick up my bib for my race the next day and meet up with Cari. Instead of resting my legs, I walked to NYRR, then Cari and I walked toward my hotel.  I got some pizza and ice cream and then walked around Hudson Yards.

  • Saturday – Normally a Long Run Day with my Sole Sisters.  But instead, today was my annual trip to NYC with my tennis friends for lunch and a Broadway show. So of course, I squeezed in a race, the Grete Gallop 10k first. (My first missed long run 😦 ). Normally I would have taken the subway to and from the race to rest my legs. But today, I wanted to add miles to my legs (and the race was just for fun). It was a struggle and hopefully those Central Park hills helped to prepare me for Nov. 3. I loved the race (and did run UP all those hills). The weather was perfect and even with 8000 runners and hills, I placed 3rd in my age group. 🙂

made two new friends waiting to start (one is pictured)

Then afterwards I walked back to my hotel, changed and walked to meet my tennis friends for lunch (Valerie’s on 45th) and then to Broadway to see Hadestown. Great show!!

that’s nutella filled French toast with a side of bacon

After the show, we walked back. I stopped at my hotel and then met the girls for a quick dinner before heading home.

Definitely a long BUT fun-filled day. 14 miles on the legs!!!!!  (6 miles run + 8 miles walking).

  • Sunday – Boating Sunday on Lake George? Nope. I wanted to go but the hubby thought it was too cold and windy. Wimp LOL.

Weekly Run Down for 9.23.19-9.29.19: Another Week, Another Town

ru

Another week of work travel. Sigh.

Last week it was Rochester. This week, Binghamton.

And trying to train for NYCM.

Last Week

  • Monday  – Summer returned with a vengeance. Almost 90 degrees and oppressive humidity.  I’ve run in worse conditions but I guess I got spoiled with last week’s weather. This UAlbany loop run felt tough. Luckily I had a friend to push me through.

as soon as we finished, the skies opened up.

  • Tuesday – Off to Binghamton with all my computers. I had never worked here before so I did my research and discovered a short rail trail in Vestal not far from my hotel. It was nice to find a place to run but it was between two highways so all you could hear was traffic.

There was a cafe where I parked and I had dinner there and then went for a walk on the trail in the other direction.

  • Wednesday – I went back to the same trail after work. Didn’t run on trail but ran through town but ate dinner at the same cafe. The owner is runner and we talked about races, of course.

  • Thursday – Last day in Binghamton and I ran the trail again but in the direction that I walked the first night.

  • Friday – Rest day.  Long drive home.
  • Saturday – Long Run Day with my Sole Sisters. I had 14 on my plan and was fortunate to have various runners to accompany me on many of miles.

Afterward was group brunch, followed by errands, unpacking and dinner out finally with the hubby.

and apple pie for dessert

  • Sunday – Boating Sunday on Lake George. The hubby thought that it would be chilly but it was not. We docked in a bay, had lunch and hung out enjoying the sunshine.

On the way home we stopped at my MIL’s to celebrate her 94th birthday.

Weekly Run Down for 9.16.19-9.22.19: On the Road Again

ru

After one week of not traveling for work, for the next four weeks I will be back on the road. Sigh.

And still trying to train for NYCM.

Last Week

  • Monday  – Long drive to Rochester but after my set-up, I had time to go for a run. I haven’t been here in a while but I used to come here often so at least I knew places to run. My favorite is along Lake Ontario. It was beautiful with perfect weather.

  • Tuesday – After a tough day at work, a run was just what I needed. I decided to head to the Erie Canal path. Again perfect running weather and a Skirt Sports ambassador meet up at Schoen Place.

  • Wednesday – Running three days in a row is not what I normally do but this was a short one and back along Lake Ontario.

added to my sea glass collection

Then a stop for ice cream.

Who knew Abbott’s was here? Had to run another mile to justify that custard.

  • Thursday – Last night in Rochester and another run along the Erie Canal but in the opposite direction from Tuesday. Wish this weather would last forever.

  • Friday – Rest day.  Long drive home. Pooped.
  • Saturday – Long Run Day with my Sole Sisters. Since I’m skipping a long run on Oct 5, I decided to run 18 and postpone my cutback run until next weekend. I ran 4 miles solo, then 5 more with Judy, and finally 4.5 with Barbara. I finish the last 4.5 miles alone. I’m not gonna lie. IT WAS HARD!!!!

After brunch, I had a much needed hair appt. Then errands and out to celebrate a friend’s b-day (while the hubby was on our boat.)

  • Sunday – No boating today. I was at a Mah Jongg weekend away. Some of us, including me, just went for the day. Fun to play and relax. Hopefully, next Sunday, I’ll be back on the boat.

the hostess got a brand new puppy – the cutest

Weekly Run Down for 9.9.19-9.15.19: Home At Last

ru

After four weeks of working in NYC and two weekends away, it was nice to be home and sleep in my own bed.

NYCM Training continued of course.

Last Week

  • Monday  – I spend today in RI with my college roommate. I started out the day with a recovery run along the beach.

Then we went kayaking for about 2 hours. Yikes. I have never used those muscles before. So sore.

loved kayaking!!

We finished the day with a boat ride to a beach to relax.

This weekend away was just what the doctor ordered.

  • Tuesday – Back home and back at work. Took a rest day, went to the chiro and then a walk around the mall with my BFF.
  • Wednesday – Fleet Feet sponsored a run night so I agreed to go with a friend. I got there early so ran 1.5 miles and then sampled some Untapped fuel and ran 3 miles with my friend and a new running friend. Nice change of scenery. Heat and humidity returned but it was only for a day.

at the Crossings where I have not run in a while

  • Thursday – Rained all day. But when I got out of work, it was not raining. Headed to the Corning Bike trail where was nearby to squeeze in a run …

leaves are stating to change already…

Then off to an early release viewing of this movie:

loved the clothes, scenery, the characters…everything about this show and of course the movie!!!!!!!!!!

  • Friday – Rest day.  Finally got to play mah jongg with the girls.
  • SaturdayLong Run Day with my Sole Sisters. My plan called for 16 miles. I ran 8 solo though I did run with Jan for a bit. Then Barbara arrived to run the next 8 but for the last mile I told her to run ahead as I was pooped. I thought it might rain but actually the weather was perfect.

on the local rail trail

After we all headed to a birthday party. Good food and good times. Running friends are the best.

  • Sunday – Still nice weather for boating on Lake George. Lucky us. We relaxed and BBQed

and then I went for a long walk in the trails.

Weekly Run Down for 9.2.19-9.8.19 – Race Week

ru

A short work week but I was in NYC AGAIN!!! And then off to RI to visit an old friend (college roommate, travel buddy, maid of honor) and to run a Half Marathon.

And NYCM Training continues, of course.

Last Week

  • Monday – I had planned to either race a 5k or volunteer but for once I didn’t register early.  It rained on and off all day. Instead I took a rest day to do fun things like laundry, errands, cleaning.  More tiring than running…
  • Tuesday – Off to NYC by train. I had planned a rest day and a movie but I didn’t run on Monday and the weather was awesome so I decided to run and postpone the movie. Started around 50th and ran uptown along the Hudson until 96th and then headed into Central Park. Eventually walked back to the hotel.

  • Wednesday – Long work day with rain predicted. As usual, no rain so ran a bit on the High Line

and then went to the movies.

Brittany-runs-a-marathon-Movie-HD-Poster-and-stills-2.jpg

A fun flic especially for someone like me who is training for her first marathon and like Brittany, it happens to be NYC. But it was not as much about running as about how it changes your life.

  • Thursday – Day 3 of work and running. Pooped but managed to run to meet Cari and Elizabeth for dinner. And saw the most amazing sunset. How lucky am I?

3 miles run to Pier i

Then I walked all the way back to my hotel.

  • Friday – No run due to the train home after work and then to unpack and re-pack. Engine broke down on the way, had to return to Penn Sta and then no power…3 1/2 hours late returning home 😦
  • Saturday – Long drive to RI to visit my college roommate, Valerie. She recently retired and built a big house on the water and has been wanting me to come see it.  She alerted me that it was 20 minutes from a half marathon in September. Last year I was running in Montreal, but this year..no excuses (except the timing with work stuff sucked).

sunset views from their deck and a few blocks from the beach

  • Sunday – Race Day – Surftown Half Marathon. I had planned to run this race before I signed up for NYC Marathon so it then changed to a training run. Good thing because it was hilly but still it was a beautiful course. And I got to meet two fellow bloggers – Kim & Michelle.

I ran the first half too fast and the 2nd half too slow but still ended up with 2nd in my AG

Afterward we went to Newport and walked around.

didn’t buy the shirt…just posted as a joke

Weekly Run Down: 8.19.19-8.25.19 – Work Travel Woes

ru

So work has been hectic. Even more hectic than normal (down TWO trainers and a two new trainings  to learn in the mix). Not ideal conditions to train for a fall race. But it is what it is. And WEEK 8 of NYCM Training has come and gone.

Last Week

  • Monday – I was supposed to go to NYC today but luckily it got changed. I had also signed up (when I was scheduled to work at home this week) for the Saratoga Track Mile. I had always wanted to run a ONE mile race. Well, it’ll have to wait until next year.  The logistics of driving 45 minutes in traffic for a short race and coming home late to pack just didn’t seem right so instead, I got up early and ran before work. The temps were better than previous runs but the rain did not get rid of the humidity…at all.

  • Tuesday – As I already said, I was almost in NYC but I had bought tickets either my tennis friends to go to the Aurora Games, a tennis exhibition. A very late night but enjoyable.

  • Wednesday – So today I did take the train to NYC. I got up early to run but it started to pour so I went back to bed hoping that the weather would be better in NYC. Well it was hot (over 90) and humid. And I missed the rain which was not necessarily a good thing. 11.5 miles on the feet.

running along the East River (no shade 😦 )

  • Thursday – A long work day but my miles been slacking so Cari agreed to meet me in Central Park and we slogged through a run (instead of attending the Brigid Runs a Marathon preview). And I got drenched on my walk home.

the company, the ducks and turtles made this run bearable.

  • Friday – Rest day to returning home late after work by train.
  • Saturday – Long Run Saturday followed by a weekend away with my tennis friends.

14 miles were on my adapted schedule and my friend Stan agreed to meet me at 6 am to run 6 miles and then Karen & Sherry ran the remaining 8 with me too.  Jan, Barbara and Judy joined us for brunch after.

perfect running weather made my longest run ever not too bad at all… `10 more weeks to go!!

Every summer we spend a weekend together at one friend’s house on the Schroon River. We play tennis, eat, swim, and just have fun. The Saturday group was large and so nice to gather everyone in one place.

swimming this year was replaced by a long walk

  • Sunday – Still at the River House. Only a few of us stayed overnight. I had hoped for early morning tennis but instead went for a long run/walk before the others got up.

so beautiful here!!

Afterward, we decided to take a drive to Lake Placid to visit the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge Center.  We saw eagles, cougars, bears, wolves, etc and walked the trails.  A great experience.

Weekly Run Down for 8.12.19-8.18.19 – The Daily Double

ru

WEEK 7 of NYCM Training included TWO races in one week (both 5ks)

Last Week

  • Monday – Well I really didn’t feel like getting up early and running. But the weather has been so unpredictable and I wasn’t sure what the week would bring besides work. So I dragged myself out of bed and actually did 6 miles. The temps were wonderful and I discovered a preserve and hiking trail just 3 miles from my house.

After work I headed to NYC for work. It was late when I arrived so just had dinner and went for a walk.

  • Tuesday – A long work day in Queens followed by meeting Cari for a walk. Haven’t seen her in awhile and it was great to catch up. It seems to always rain when we meet. Today was predicted to have heavy rain in the evening. Lucky for us, it never happened. So we took the subway to the GW bridge because I wanted to see the Little Red Lighthouse, walked over 100 blocks along the Hudson at sunset and then I took the subway back to my hotel. What a great way to spend the evening with a friend.

  • Wednesday – Another work day but as I’ve done in summers past, I took the long subway ride to Brooklyn to run a 5k. Crazy I know but it was enjoyable.

It rained until the start of the race and then 100% humidity!! Tough race but at least I won my age group.

  • Thursday – Met up with Cari again after work but this time it was to actually run. Instead of our original plan of running in Central Park, we headed to the pier on the Hudson to catch up with fellow Skirt Sports ambassador Elizabeth. Then caught the sun setting as we ran.

we may have walked and talked more than we ran but who cares?

  • Friday – Rest day due to returning home late after work by train.
  • Saturday – Today I ran the Jailhouse Rock 5k with my friend Laurie. After a hard work week and a late arrival home the night before, it wasn’t the best laid plans.

another tough one due to the heat and extreme humidity.. Came in 2nd in the 10 year age group.

Still fun and then ran 9 miles after to complete a long run. That was not fun.

don’t recommend starting a long run at 10 am when it is hot and humid and after a 5k…one of the worst ones ever.

  • Sunday – It’s Sunday and that means boating on Lake George. It was a gorgeous day and we got off the lake before the storms arrived 🙂

Weekly Run Down for 8.5.19-8.11.19 – Avoiding the Rain

ru

The theme of the week was looking at the forecast and finding a time to run.  And WEEK 6 of NYCM Training, of course.

Last Week

  • Monday – Since I wanted to get my nails done after work (priorities, right?), I got up early to run before work. I was treated to perfect temps (in the 50’s – woo hoo!!) Glad to have done it.

for part of the run, I ventured out of the neighborhood onto the water line trail (it is wasn’t even buggy)

  • Tuesday I had plans after work to meet a friend at the gym and then go to dinner. Since the weather for the next few days seemed iffy, I got up early AGAIN and ran a few miles before work. It was nice to enjoy those cool temps two days in a row but it’s challenge to keep the run interesting in my neighborhood. I do choose different routes but still…boring (Thank God for good podcasts). And the forecast was right, it did rain on and off in the afternoon.

  • Wednesday – There were several choices for today’s after work run – either SOAR on the same trails as last week or a run on the rail trail and then have ice cream. I chose the later for several reasons. The trail was a longer drive and I had run it last week. Trail running isn’t really running (for me) and more of my friends were doing the ice cream run. And then they both were cancelled due to predicted thunderstorms. So I went out for ice cream with my co-workers. And the rain never came. On my way home, I stopped at the rail trail and ran a few humid miles. Is it an ice cream run if you eat the ice cream before the run? Lol

  • Thursday -Thursdays have been for trailing running for the last 4 weeks but the location was pretty far, the trail more technical and most of my friends were not going. So I thought I would instead run on the Corning Bike Path which is not far from where I was working. Then I realized that I can run local anytime so I chose the trail run. Running friends Heidi and Deirdre did too.

Heidi and I drove together and it RAINed hard the whole drive.  But when we arrived, it actually stopped (Yep lots of mud on the trail). This trail was the prettiest of all the trails I’ve done but too slippery to run so we walked most of it.  That means we were BOTP, out in the dark and the trail markers were hard to see. Yes, we had fun even though we got lost several times.  There was even food (turkey, beans, etc) left when we finally found our way back. The drive home was even more eventful because of the detours and no cell service.  So it was much longer drive and a lot of laughs along the way.

  • Friday – Finally a rest day and my usual evening with the mah jongg ladies.
  • Saturday – Long Run Saturday with my Sole Sisters.  As usual, I am running longer than the others so I started earlier, ran 2 miles and then ran with Sherry for 9. The weather was perfect and it’s always easier running with a friend. Afterwards, we all went to our favorite brunch place.

  • Sunday – Boating Sunday. Can you believe, that it has not rained all summer on the weekend.  It would really suck if we could not enjoy the lake and our boat.

relaxed and read and then had our first BBQ of the season

Weekly Run Down for 7.29.19-8.4.19: Race Week Again

ru

A new name for an old race. And it was also WEEK 5 for NYCM Training and I continued to get my runs done.

Last Week

  • Monday – A quick run before work

we are already losing daylight hours – boo!

because I was going to the movies that evening. A friend got a free pass to:

The Farewell poster.jpg

I enjoyed it.

  • Tuesday Instead of my regular job, this week, I worked tech support for the NYS Bar Exam. For nostalgia sake (I proctored where I used to work) I thought I might run a little in the area but it was too damn hot (and thunderstorms were lurking). I did meet my BFF to walk and talk in the mall. Got my steps in!!
  • Wednesday – Back at my regular job and this week, I set my alarm to run before work but changed my mind. Instead I did attend the ice cream run after work. It was at a convenient location and though I was tired, I can never resist ice cream.

scheduled for 5 miles… dragged myself through 2 at UAlbany and then 2.5 trail miles at 6 mile Waterworks. Thanks, Barbara for staying with me while I pulled up the rear.

  • Thursday – Back at the Bar Exam…exhausted but still excited to run the trails again. We returned to Thacher Park but ran on a different trail than a few weeks ago. Somehow once I started running, the weariness in my body disappeared and I ran with a new friend (Gail). We ran slow and enjoyed the views and then  afterword went out to dinner with some of my Sole Sisters.

  • Friday –  Rest day after day 3 at the Bar Exam so that I could get ready to run 8 insanely hilly miles the next day. and then recoup at my friend’s house on the Schroon River.
  • Saturday – Inaugural Hudson River Ramble (previously Race the Train). – an 8 mile race along the Hudson River (where a train used to run). I guess I had amnesia because I don’t remember the race being this hard…the hills were insane so I had no choice but to walk up every single one.  Still I made some new friends, chatted with some old ones and even won my age group.

After the race, I stopped at a trail. Yes I hiked to top of a mountain… Sorry legs but I’ve wanting to hike all summer.

2 miles to the top

  • Sunday – Another Boating Sunday on Lake George. Again the weather was lovely and this week, we invited some friends along.  Such a fun day sharing our love of the lake with others.

This Coming Week – Marathon Training Week 6

  • Monday 3 miles (before work), nail appt.
  • Tuesday –  rest day, dinner out with a friend
  • Wednesday – 5 miles (ice cream group run) on the rail trail or SOAR run at Thacher Park
  • Thursday3 miles (ARE trail run series or on the Corning bike path)
  • Friday – rest day, mah jongg evening
  • Saturday11 mile Long Run
  • Sunday – rest day, boating

Weekly Run Down for 7.22.19-7.28.19: The Cool Down

ru

Yes. It finally cooled down – at least the temps did and we got rain. And it was also WEEK 4 for NYCM Training so my training did not cool down.

Last Week

  • Monday – Based on rain in the forecast and a tennis party after work, I decided that I would run before work. Easier said than done. Took 45 min to get it together but I got out there and it was delightful.

my cat waited in the driveway for me to get back from my run …so cute.

Rain cancelled the pool party but instead we just went out to dinner. As always, an enjoyable evening with great friends.

  • Tuesday More rain and a scheduled rest day because of an after work webinar and running planned for the next two days. Believe or not, I actually stopped for a quick workout at the gym on my way home.
  • Wednesday – I decided to skip the SOAR group run (I wasn’t in the mood for speed drills) and enlisted my friend Heidi to accompany me at the Corning bike path. I ran 3 miles and then walked 3 miles with her.

  • Thursday – I guess I’m addicted to trail runs. It was my third week in a row attending the ARE group run. This week it was held at Lawson Lake and was the muddiest and most challenging one so far.  Still lots of friends, fun and food.

ran some, walked a lot but enjoyed the company of my friends and the BBQ after!!

  • Friday – Rest day and mah jongg evening. But I did take a walk during lunch…a productive one…bought my FIRST pair of Oofos (30% off), and some cute tops on sale at the Loft.

  • Saturday – Long run Saturday with the Sole Sisters. 10 miles on my schedule. As I did last weekend, I ran a few miles before I met everyone else and drove with Barbara to the Nisky Bike Path and ran more (followed by brunch, of course.)

  • Sunday – Boating Sunday on Lake George – Hooray and another sunny warm perfect day. The storms that they predicted never arrived.

this week on Log Bay Island
