The Running Update – 1.30.17-2.5.17

ru

Last Week:

  • Monday – It was a cold one. But got my run done before grocery shopping and meeting my bff for a walk around the mall.

Feels like 15 degrees brrr

  • Tuesday – A rest day with snow predicted for the evening. Played tennis as usual on Tuesday.
  • Wednesday – A busy week prompted me to do two loops of the campus. Thanks to Alyssa keeping me sane.

Same shirt for the 2nd week in a row

  • Thursday– I was planning a rest day due to a needed hair appointment after work. But I was able to squeeze in a quick one during lunch.

Clouds, sun, and snow all during this short run

  • Friday – Rest day today except for a walk at lunch (after the pizza they fed us.). Did some cooking for tomorrow’s party and then played mah jongg in the evening.
  • Saturday – I ran the Polar Cap Race in Lake George. It was very cold 4 miles and the course was hilly but I had a great race and love racing with a friend.
img_4029

surprise. surprise. won my age group and had a PR!!!!

After the post-race refreshments and awards, I decided to add some more miles so I could loosely call it a “long” run.  I ran around Lake George and then Bolton Landing.  It was even colder than during the race but loved the scenery.

img_4028

I then had to rush home to go to a very fun Chinese New Years party.

  • Sunday –  A much needed rest day. Did my Saturday weekend home stuff and spent the afternoon knitting with friends (and eating).

Monday Running Update

ru
Last Week:

  • Monday –  Completed my postponed long run today.  I started later than I should have.  I drove to run on the Zim Smith Bike Path because I love to have a post run treat at Leah’s Cakery. Well, it is closed on Mondays. 😦 So it was hot, I was tired from the weekend and the run was pretty awful.

img_1872

But I got it done and found a great place to eat afterwards only 3.5 miles away.

img_1876

best apple pie!

fullsizerender

YAY! Done!

I went to a STEM (training domestic violence survivors for a 5k) training/meeting in the evening at FleetFeet and I am excited that my volunteering starts Sept 12.

  • Tuesday – Decided to rest and skip my AM tennis. Got my nails done, played tennis in the evening and then went out to dinner (to celebrate the end of our summer Tuesday tennis).
  • Wednesday -The tennis round robin got cancelled so I went to the gym.

img_1749

Ran with Alyssa in the evening. She had to get home so we had to rush.  It meant that we were done before the rain (But boy was it humid!!)

  • Thursday – I played tennis in the am. Met Barbara for a run at UAlbany. Another friend was supposed to come along but we confused the times. It was a decent run since the temps have cooled down.

Afterwards I met my BFF for a walk around the mall.

  • Friday – I went to the gym in the am and then mah jongg in the evening.  Enjoyed my last day of leisure!!
  • Saturday –  My second long run this week and I really didn’t want to do it. So I took a new route … The unpaved part of the rail trail. It was a nice route and I can’t wait until they pave it.

Then my friend and I decided  to go up to the Saratoga track for a few races (It closes this weekend) and then go to the casino.

showing my $40 winning ticket – won 4 out of 5 races so a very good day!! was not lucky at the casino

  • Sunday – I got up very early to head up to the lake.  It’s the annual Christmas party and the bay gets crowded early.  Lots of boats, food, entertainment and FUN!! The weather was absolutely perfect.

The day ended with dinner out and fireworks over the lake.

30 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday 5K race
  • Tuesday – NYC!!
  • Wednesday – First day of my new job,  4 mile run with a friend
  • Thursday –  Work, 3 mile run with a friend, hubby’s tennis party?
  • Friday –  Work, rest, mah jongg

TOLT: August Recap

Image result for august

Wow, the summer is flying by… Pumpkin lattes will be here before you know it…

So here’s how August went…

Weekday Runs:

Like July, August was HOT and humid most days and we had very little rain.  I was able to run at least 3-4 times each week. But I do not have a treadmill at home so they were mostly slow sweaty ones.

Because I was not working, I was able to run wherever. I was not forced to run near home or near work. So I tried to do my runs in many different places – Chestertown, Crossings, Corning Trail, Colonie Town Park, Nisky Trail, Zim Smith Trail, Rail Trail, UAlbany, etc.

I also ran with Alyssa 4 times. I met her on FB. These were, no doubt, besides my 5k races my faster runs. I struggle when I run with her but she gets me to run faster. She says that I make her faster .  Win-Win.

I re-connected with Barbara and Judy and ran with them each once. It’s more fun running with friends.

Long Runs:

There were TWO!!!.  I ran races or went boating on the weekends. So I managed to move these runs to Monday.

Total Mileage:

I ran 89 miles this month – finally some improvement.

aug

Races:

I ran three races this month – a 8.4 miler, a 10K and a 5K.

I was generally happy with how they went. I did not have PR goals and of course, they could have been faster.  I won age group awards in all three. That’s an achievement. The 8.4 and 10k races were very HILLY! The only one I felt could be better was the 5k.  We are, though, our own toughest critics.

Cross Training:

I was STILL unemployed and I played tennis. But not as often as in the beginning of the summer.

I DID NOT go to a single yoga class!! Someday I will do, I promise.

lheartspaceogo

I did workout at the gym at least three times.  I know that I could go more often but it’s better than nothing.

I walked to the tennis courts when I played nearby and occasionally did go for a walk. But not as often as when I worked.  I think that the tennis and the hiking (see below) made up for it, though.

img_1755

my favorite place to walk – rail trail

Other News:

I went hiking again…by myself and with some friends. Love it. Once to Pinnacle Point in Bolton Landing and then on four trails in Chestertown.

I took a trip to NYC with my two of my friends. We listened to Broadway tunes in Bryant Park and then walked to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see the Costume Institute. What a full but exciting day!!

img_1297

I also took a day trip to the Saratoga Race Track with a friend.  We had breakfast, watched and bet on the races and then stopped by the Casino (where I won $77).

img_1418

I spent two wonderful weekends with my knitting and mah jongg friends on the Schroon River. I did some running but mostly played tennis, knit or played mah jongg and ate.

Boating season continued and the weather was great.  I love it at the lake. It’s my “happy place.”

Feeling healthy so Life Is Good.

And I HAVE A NEW JOB!!!!!!!!! I will be working starting Sept.7.

Looking Ahead:

My next half marathon is September 18 and I am excited.

I do have a bunch of races coming up.  This is my list so far for the next 2 months:

  • 9-5-16 – Sefcu 5K
  • 9-10-16 – Malta 5k
  • 9-18-16 – Saratoga Palio Half Marathon
  • 9-25-16 – Arsenal City 5k ???
  • 10-01-16  – Apple Run 5K
  • 10-09-16 – Ramblefest Half Marathon
  • 10-15-16 – Great Pumpkin Challenge 10K

No monthly goals.

my motto for 2016

Since it is Thursday,  I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

Monday Running Update

mon r u
Last Week:

  • Monday –  Took my morning walk around work and then knit on the exercise bike. After work, it was cold and windy but still ventured out for a run before visiting a friend (the one who just had a mastectomy.)

20140401-112401.jpg img_8132

  • Tuesday – We had a huge holiday brunch for the whole school. Took my afternoon walk around work. After work, I played tennis and went out to dinner after.
  • Wednesday – Today we had another holiday lunch with my dept at work. The weather was even colder and windy.  I still got out to run after work but my hands were frozen and I stopped after 3 miles.

img_8138

  • Thursday – Just work today – truly a rest day.
  • Friday – Warmed up to the 30’s (heat wave!) so did my after work run followed by an evening of mah jongg games.

  • Saturday – Rain & sleet in the am so glad to be enjoying a rest day. After lots of housework, got bored so went out to do some retail therapy – bought stuff that I didn’t really need but got GREAT deals.
img_8153

I have a sock obsession – notice that the $40 socks cost a penny and I saved $73.63.

  • Sunday – Another free race – I ran the 15K and followed it with a few more miles.
img_8162

course PR for the race

Celebrated our anniversary (which was Saturday) with a dinner at our favorite restaurant.

Friday Five: Favorite Winter Actvities & Runfessions December

Every Friday, three DC area bloggers Mar at Mar On the Run, Cynthia at You Signed Up For What?! and Courtney from Eat Pray Run, DC to host the Friday Five linkup.  Anyone can join with their own Friday Five post (yes, it must be a Friday Five!!)  They encourage you to visit other blogs on the linkup, comment, share and engage!

This week, the theme is  Favorite Winter Activities:

I’ll say it up front.  I hate the cold!!

If I didn’t run, I would never go outside.

I don’t ski, snowboard, ice skate, sled, snow shoe…nada!

Keeping that in mind, here are my favorites:

1. Running – I sign up for races & winter half marathons to make me get out the door.  I hate the treadmills so unless it’s impossible, I run outside.

2. Tennis (Indoors) – I play doubles once a week. I have a contract on Tuesdays at 6-7:30 pm.  The women I play with are wonderful and we always go out to dinner afterwards.

IMG_1254

3. Knitting – I am not very experienced but I have made socks and hats. I find it very relaxing especially in the evening by the fire. And you can multi-task – knit, chat & watch TV.

4. Cooking (on the weekends) – I love to make soups, stews, quiches & chili. Since during the week, I work and am busy every evening, I do my cooking for the week on Saturday or Sunday (my non- long run day.)

IMG_4075

5. Reading  I’ve always loved to read. I read every night before I go to sleep. I still go the library and take out real books. When I am traveling, I’ll read on my iPad.

Loved these!!! any recommendations?

It’s that time again.  Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice
I runfess…
My hubby hates to shop and besides he is an awful gift giver.  He always buys me jewelry that I don’t need or like.  I used to keep it but now I just return it and pick out something else.
I, on the other hand, love to pick out gifts and always seem to know how to buy the perfect gifts.
So this year, I bought my own gifts – a wall hanger for my medals (my DIY one broke), new bands for my Fitbit and some more SkirtSports items.  I think I may even wrap them and open them on Christmas morning.

don’t you love this one?

If I write that I got the best gifts ever, you’ll know why.
I runfess…
I am trying get over that pitiful performance on my last half marathon (but it’s hard when friends are still asking you how it went) by thinking ahead to the next one.
smhm16
On February 7, I will try to redeem myself – that is if it is not warm , windy and humid in Florida.  But I plan to have a better attitude about the whole thing and just enjoy running it.  I know the course is awesome and I can’t wait to spend 6 days in Florida with friends (while it is freezing here).
relaxing in the sun at Boca Grande beach

March 2013 in Sarasota. looking for sunshine this trip.

But I am still mulling over what I could have done differently so I don’t have a repeat performance. Is this normal?  How long does it take to forget a race?
I runfess…
I am disappointed that for the 2nd year in a row I didn’t get into the lottery for the NYC Half Marathon.  I really wanted to run that race. If only I were faster, (I think 2:05 finish time), I could automatically get in.
12342546_1077829165561645_5807317734351669975_n
Any suggestions for a late March, early April half marathon???
The other spring halfs that I was considering are Brooklyn Half Marathon and the Steel Rail Half Marathon.  I don’t have the time or money to fly all over the place (& my hubby wouldn’t go) so I like to pick ones that are nearby.  They are both May 21, 2016.
Normally that would be doable and fall right after my tennis vacation in Naples. But this year, exams where I work don’t end until May 15 so my tennis vacation will be later and I will be away during those races.

Only for a second (sorry tennis ladies), I thought about bailing.  But I love my friends and now, my hopes lie with the VCM Relay.  I hope AJH is lucky again this year.

Friday Five: Off From Work Actvities

DC_linkup

Every Friday, three DC area bloggers Mary at Mar On the Run, Cynthia at You Signed Up For What?! and Courtney from Eat Pray Run, DC to host the Friday Five linkup.  Anyone can join with their own Friday Five post (yes, it must be a Friday Five!!)  They encourage you to visit other blogs on the linkup, comment, share and engage!

This week, the theme is Free Friday. So since this is my only stay at home vacation of the year, I’ve chosen to post about My Top 5 Off Work Activities.

1. RUNNING

IMG_4579

Of course, what else?  I can run in the morning, in the afternoon or in the evening.  I can run when the sun comes out or it has stopped raining.  I can run near home or drive to a bike path or to a park.  I can even run with a non-working friend. It is so delightful!!

IMG_4608

2. EXERCISING

I don’t enjoy it but I know it good for me to do something other than running.  However when I work, I don’t have (make) time for it.

IMG_3982

3. COOKING

I do enjoy it and before I started playing tennis and running, I used to cook a lot.

IMG_4351

2 of my favorites things to make

This week, I’ve made eggplant parm, tuna noodle casserole, meatloaf, vegetable soup…my hubby’s favorite dishes since he has to work.

4. KNITTING

IMG_4562

and I did finally finish this scarf

I started knitting when I couldn’t run or go to work. I find it relaxing and I like to make things for others.  I used to quilt but knitting is portable and I can bring it anywhere.

IMG_4256-0

5. READING

I’ve always enjoyed reading.  But who has the time?  I read before I fall asleep at night but when I am not working, I can read anytime.

Happy Running! What do you do when you are off from work?

Currently

Being off from work for more than a weekend is very strange for me. I am not used to having so much free time and yet, not getting things done.

Reading…. I want to see Unbroken tomorrow in the theaters so I am trying to finish the book. (I doubt I will finish, though.)

Watching… I heard this show was good and I am binge watching all the episodes to catch up. So far, I am enjoiying it and I think I am hooked.

Drinking I have fallen in love with herbal teas.

Eating… out a lot.

Wishing for  Seasonally warm temps and DRY weather… no snow, ice or rain so I can run outdoors.

Yay! Clear path.

Seeing next week… Going to MoMA in NYC to see…

and seeing the decorations that I missed on my last visit.

Loving... that I do not have to go to work and can RUN any time I want and do whatever whenever. I may even hit the gym.

have to finish knitting this scarf by tomorrow!

Feeling… Anxious. I am always nervous about running a half marathon especially a destination race where I don’t know anyone.

West Palm beach, here I come!
