Friday Five 2.0 – 2017

I am linking up with Running on Happy & Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday Five 2.0 linkup!

This week, the theme is your goals, resolutions, or other things you’re looking forward to in the new year!

Well, since I don’t set any goals, I’ll post about what I’m looking forward to in 2017.

1. Running Healthy.

I have been lucky to have no injuries since 2013.  So I hope this trend continues.  I think the key is to not overdo and take your rest days.

img_86152. Destination Races.

I love to travel but working doesn’t allow me to do it as often as I’d like.  So I really appreciate any opportunity I get.  Of course, I try to tie each trip into a half marathon.

Sarasota Music Half - Feb

So far, I only have one big one planned for 2017. I will running this race alone but plan to meet up with a few non-running friends.

March 5, 2017 in Stuart, FL.

I hope to get in another destination race in the late fall too.

3. Annual Tennis Vacation.

A group of 10 of us have been traveling together since 2002.  And we have been going to Naples, FL for a week in May since 2006. We even rent the same two villas.

img_9887

Every morning we take tennis lessons and then play doubles.  In the afternoon, we go to the beach.  And then in the evenings, we go out.  Tough life!

4. Girls Racing Weekends.

My first one was in Philly in 2014.  It was fun but last December’s was even more fun.

20140331-090910.jpg

walks on the beach

I have one planned for April 30 in NYC to run the Shape Women’s Half Marathon and another for October 1 to run the Wineglass Half Marathon in Corning, NY. (Anyone else running these races??)

Fingers crossed that we can fit in a blogger’s weekend again with the #holottafun ladies.

5. Time with Family and Friends.

Ultimately this is the most important. I plan to spend a lot time with them. I know I can schedule my runs and races around those gatherings.

2016 Great Pumpkin Challenge 10K Race Recap

gpcrunWEB1

October 15, 2015 – 9:30 am Saratoga Springs. NY

Running a 10K a week after a half marathon? Crazy?

I did a easy run on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday and rested Friday in hopes that my legs would not be cranky

I ran this race the last two years and really enjoyed it (even 2014 in the rain.)

My 10K PR is 57:03 and as you can see, I’ve gotten slower each year. But I was still on a PR “High” so I had no expectations for a fast time.

I was very tempted to switch to the 5k course which is flat. The 10k course continues from the 5k and there are several big hills.

I may have switched so I could try for a 5k PR but after running 13.1 miles less than a week ago, it seemed unlikely that this would happen.

The race takes place in Saratoga State Park which is a beautiful place to run especially in the fall.

map gpc

The weather in the Fall is very unpredictable.  It could be warm and then it could be cold.

Not knowing what the weather will do makes it hard to dress. I’m not ready to dress for winter. (I am wearing that skirt as long as I can stand it.)

I planned to wear that same orange race shirt, a skirt and compression socks and then wear sweat pants, a jacket and gloves to leave behind and put on after the race.

When I got up it was 30 degrees and frost on the ground!!!!!!!!!!! But I stuck to my guns and wore that outfit.

This is a very popular race. They usually get about 1500 runners. So I left for the race early in case I had to park where I needed to get a shuttle to the start. The race was to start at 9:30 and I got there at 8:30 am. I got a parking spot right next to the finish line and was thrilled. (Why does someone who runs 13 miles look for the closest parking space???)

As soon as I got out of my car, I realized how cold it was.  I decided to add a pair of capris under my skirt and another shirt under my jacket.

img_2461

purple long sleeved tech shirt

I picked up my race a packet, entered my raffle ticket in one of the raffles and used the restroom. (Yes, there were real ones.) I also voted for my favorite in the pumpkin decorating contest.  It was tough to choose.

Then I hung out at the fire pit and chatted with the other runners. I didn’t find any of my friends but I did get to talk to and shiver with many of the runners that I see at local races – most of them are very speedy too.

img_2385

Finally it was time for the race to start. It was cold but I decided to leave my jacket and pants at the bag check. I put my DIY arm warmers on under my shirt and kept on my gloves. Many of the runners were in costume.  I thought about it but it was too cold.

img_2390

I may not look cold but I was.

I started not too far back because I was with those fast ladies. (and two of them were in my age group.)

This race for me can be divided into two parts: The first 5K and the second 5k.

Miles 1-3

9:58, 9:07, 9:02

Both the 5k and 10k runners start together and run the same course. So it was very crowded at first. Since I was near the front, everyone was passing me by. I was trying to run fast but my legs just wouldn’t go. Those ladies that I mentioned, they quickly left me in the dust.

The 5k had a few inclines but was basically flat. I didn’t even have to walk.

IMG_7149

I love running in this park. It is so pretty.

And the sun was shining brightly so I quickly warmed up.  I was happy that I had taken off my jacket and extra shirt.

The 5k ended and my time was 27:xx. Crazy! I didn’t feel like I was running fast.  It could have been a 5k PR!!

Of course, that exhausted me and we hadn’t hit the hills yet.

Miles 4-6.2

9:38, 9:52, 9:24, 8:31

At this point, I was too warm for those DIY arm sleeves.  But did you ever try to get arm sleeves off under a long sleeved shirt?  Yeah, pretty difficult.   But eventually I had to stop and I got them rolled down.

The rest of the course was filled with hills. I tried to run up them but was pretty unsuccessful. So I walked many times during the second half of the race …during every hill.

I didn’t stop at any of the water stops. I wasn’t thirsty.  But by mile 5, I was ravenous.  I usually take a GU every 4 miles of a race.  But without any water, I decided to see if I could get by on no fuel.

Well, by the end I had no energy..at all… and the biggest hill was 1/2 mile before the finish line…GRRR!!!

I really wasn’t paying attention to the time on my watch and I walked one last time on the last turn and was shocked to see that the clock said 57:xx!!

I booked it but it was too little, too late, I crossed at 57:28 (57:22 chip time).

img_2396

My first thought was “Could I have PRed if I didn’t walk up all the hills?!”

Nevertheless, I was content that I ran the first half very well on tired legs and nothing was hurting!!! Besides it was course PR!

I quickly headed to get food. Priorities! The line was long but moved quickly. There was fruit, bagels, lots of delicious homemade goodies (cookies, apple, pumpkin, zucchini breads, etc.) and hot chocolate. Everything was so good!

It was getting late so I retrieved my checked bag and looked for the race results.

Though I was almost 2 minutes faster than last year when I won an AG award, this year I did not. (And they gave out insulated coffee travel mugs. Darn!)

img_2397

I should have waited around for the awards ceremony but I didn’t because I wanted to get up to the lake. Today was going to be my last day there until next May 😦

Many of our friends had put their boats away for the season but one of our friends from NJ just got a new (bigger) boat and they were anxious to use it.

The weather was absolutely perfect.  And we spent a glorious day on one of the islands: wine, steaks, sunshine, good friends. What more could you ask for?

My hubby and our friends stayed overnight but I had to go home because I promised my friend AJH from VT that I would watch her race in a local duathlon.

This was my 5th time as a spectator and I always enjoy it.  The weather, however, wasn’t as nice as the day before. It was warmer but windy and cloudy so it felt colder.

While Andrea ran the first 2 mile leg, I had hot cider and a freshly made cider donut.  During her 17 mile bike leg, I ran the 2 mile course. By the second 2 mile leg, the sun finally came out. Andrea took off after the race (to hit Target and the outlets.  They don’t have Target in VT!!!) I stopped at Target too, then got my nails done and finally arrived at home to get all those things done that I don’t have time to do during the work week.

So a busy weekend has come to end. Another race done and another one coming next weekend (a 5k this time.)

Happy Running! Did you race this past weekend? Is it getting colder where you live? What fall activities do you enjoy?

Monday Running Update

ru

Last Week:

  • Monday – It was a holiday and I signed up at the last minute for a 5K race. Not my best nor my worst.  Scored 1st in my age group and met up with a lot of runners that I knew. But missed a day on the lake. Can’t have it all.

  • Tuesday – I took a trip to NYC because my friend Anna (from Russia) was going to be there (on her way back from a Maine wedding).  Unfortunately the early trains were sold out so I took the bus and arrived around 1:30 pm. We walked to Pier 81 and had lunch on the North River Lobster Boat. Then we walked on the  High Line and ended the day with drinks and crepes on the rooftop of the Standard Hotel. The weather was windy, cloudy and drizzly but still a wonderful day.

Since I saw her 3 years ago, she has taken up running. So proud!!

  • Wednesday -First day on the new job.  Took a walk to Starbucks at lunch. (Yes I work near Starbucks again!!) Both Alyssa and Barbara had to cancel so I had to go it alone after work at UAlbany. It seemed that summer’s humidity had returned. Ugh!!

  • Thursday – Today was even hotter and more humid than yesterday. Another solo run on the rail trail.

  • Friday – a real rest day. I was supposed to meet a friend at the gym and I didn’t even do that. Mah jongg with my friends in the evening was fun.
  • Saturday –  5K race and then some miles afterward. The race was good. Actually one of my fastest this year and won 2nd in my age group. The run afterward was a struggle. I had to bribe myself with food.

won a bottle of champagne & a $50 gift card to the Recovery Room restaurant

it wasn’t pretty but got it done and my reward was delish

  • Sunday – Spent a perfect day on the lake. It was sunny, not too warm with a breeze.  None of our friends were around so we docked on an island, had champagne (the bottle that I won at my race the day before) with our lunch, I read a book and then went for a hike.

21 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday 4 mile run, gym, dinner out
  • Tuesday –  rest, mall walk with BFF
  • Wednesday –  3 mile run with a friend+ volunteering with STEM group
  • Thursday –  4 mile run with a friend
  • Friday –  rest, mah jongg
  • Saturday – rest, boating
  • Sunday – Saratoga Palio Half Marathon!!

Monday Running Update

Last Week:

  • Monday –  Completed my postponed long run today.  I started later than I should have.  I drove to run on the Zim Smith Bike Path because I love to have a post run treat at Leah’s Cakery. Well, it is closed on Mondays. 😦 So it was hot, I was tired from the weekend and the run was pretty awful.

img_1872

But I got it done and found a great place to eat afterwards only 3.5 miles away.

img_1876

YAY! Done!

I went to a STEM (training domestic violence survivors for a 5k) training/meeting in the evening at FleetFeet and I am excited that my volunteering starts Sept 12.

  • Tuesday – Decided to rest and skip my AM tennis. Got my nails done, played tennis in the evening and then went out to dinner (to celebrate the end of our summer Tuesday tennis).
  • Wednesday -The tennis round robin got cancelled so I went to the gym.

img_1749

Ran with Alyssa in the evening. She had to get home so we had to rush.  It meant that we were done before the rain (But boy was it humid!!)

  • Thursday – I played tennis in the am. Met Barbara for a run at UAlbany. Another friend was supposed to come along but we confused the times. It was a decent run since the temps have cooled down.

Afterwards I met my BFF for a walk around the mall.

  • Friday – I went to the gym in the am and then mah jongg in the evening.  Enjoyed my last day of leisure!!
  • Saturday –  My second long run this week and I really didn’t want to do it. So I took a new route … The unpaved part of the rail trail. It was a nice route and I can’t wait until they pave it.

Then my friend and I decided  to go up to the Saratoga track for a few races (It closes this weekend) and then go to the casino.

showing my $40 winning ticket – won 4 out of 5 races so a very good day!! was not lucky at the casino

  • Sunday – I got up very early to head up to the lake.  It’s the annual Christmas party and the bay gets crowded early.  Lots of boats, food, entertainment and FUN!! The weather was absolutely perfect.

The day ended with dinner out and fireworks over the lake.

30 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday 5K race

TOLT: August Recap

Image result for august

Wow, the summer is flying by… Pumpkin lattes will be here before you know it…

So here’s how August went…

Weekday Runs:

Like July, August was HOT and humid most days and we had very little rain.  I was able to run at least 3-4 times each week. But I do not have a treadmill at home so they were mostly slow sweaty ones.

Because I was not working, I was able to run wherever. I was not forced to run near home or near work. So I tried to do my runs in many different places – Chestertown, Crossings, Corning Trail, Colonie Town Park, Nisky Trail, Zim Smith Trail, Rail Trail, UAlbany, etc.

I also ran with Alyssa 4 times. I met her on FB. These were, no doubt, besides my 5k races my faster runs. I struggle when I run with her but she gets me to run faster. She says that I make her faster .  Win-Win.

I re-connected with Barbara and Judy and ran with them each once. It’s more fun running with friends.

Long Runs:

There were TWO!!!.  I ran races or went boating on the weekends. So I managed to move these runs to Monday.

Total Mileage:

I ran 89 miles this month – finally some improvement.

aug

Races:

I ran three races this month – a 8.4 miler, a 10K and a 5K.

I was generally happy with how they went. I did not have PR goals and of course, they could have been faster.  I won age group awards in all three. That’s an achievement. The 8.4 and 10k races were very HILLY! The only one I felt could be better was the 5k.  We are, though, our own toughest critics.

Cross Training:

I was STILL unemployed and I played tennis. But not as often as in the beginning of the summer.

I DID NOT go to a single yoga class!! Someday I will do, I promise.

lheartspaceogo

I did workout at the gym at least three times.  I know that I could go more often but it’s better than nothing.

I walked to the tennis courts when I played nearby and occasionally did go for a walk. But not as often as when I worked.  I think that the tennis and the hiking (see below) made up for it, though.

img_1755

my favorite place to walk – rail trail

Other News:

I went hiking again…by myself and with some friends. Love it. Once to Pinnacle Point in Bolton Landing and then on four trails in Chestertown.

I took a trip to NYC with my two of my friends. We listened to Broadway tunes in Bryant Park and then walked to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see the Costume Institute. What a full but exciting day!!

img_1297

I also took a day trip to the Saratoga Race Track with a friend.  We had breakfast, watched and bet on the races and then stopped by the Casino (where I won $77).

img_1418

I spent two wonderful weekends with my knitting and mah jongg friends on the Schroon River. I did some running but mostly played tennis, knit or played mah jongg and ate.

Boating season continued and the weather was great.  I love it at the lake. It’s my “happy place.”

Feeling healthy so Life Is Good.

And I HAVE A NEW JOB!!!!!!!!! I will be working starting Sept.7.

Looking Ahead:

My next half marathon is September 18 and I am excited.

I do have a bunch of races coming up.  This is my list so far for the next 2 months:

  • 9-5-16 – Sefcu 5K
  • 9-10-16 – Malta 5k
  • 9-18-16 – Saratoga Palio Half Marathon
  • 9-25-16 – Arsenal City 5k ???
  • 10-01-16  – Apple Run 5K
  • 10-09-16 – Ramblefest Half Marathon
  • 10-15-16 – Great Pumpkin Challenge 10K

No monthly goals.

my motto for 2016

Since it is Thursday,  I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

Happy Running! How did your August turn out?  Anything exciting planned for September?

Monday Running Update

mon r u
Last Week:

  • Monday –  Completed my postponed long run today.  Judy was nice enough to run the first 3 with me and then I was solo for the next 7.  The weather was perfect and the run pretty decent.

img_1728

  • Tuesday – played tennis in the am. and did a bunch of errands the rest of the day.
  • Wednesday – walked the mall and got some retail therapy. Ran with Alyssa in the evening at the Crossings. As always, a run with a friend is better than without.

  • Thursday – Played tennis in the am with the same new group as last week and then met Barbara for a run right after. We ran in the ugly humidity and then I finished solo at home. (Do you ever plan on 4 than feel guilty that you stopped at 3.5 and finish later?)

wearing my favorite Skirt Sports top ❤

Had a hair appt in the afternoon. Met a friend for dinner. (We had planned to go to the gym and for a walk but postponed it until the next morning.)

  • Friday – The tennis robin got cancelled so I went to the gym, for a walk and out to lunch with a friend.  (We had planned this for the day before but only got the eating part done.)

I wasn’t running…just posing for a pic. I used the arm machine and then went for a 5 mile walk.

Afterwards I went grocery shopping, made a broccoli slaw salad, packed my stuff for the weekend and drove up to my friend’s house on Schroon River. We spent the evening knitting, chatting and watching a movie.

  • Saturday – I woke up to this view of the Schroon River.

14079561_10155108282569428_4886300720929991983_n

I had planned to run 11 miles this morning but decided to just do a short run since it was too hilly.

I didn’t play tennis but walked to and from the courts (2 miles).  After lunch, we played mah jongg and chatted, etc.  I drove back to the marina to have dinner with my hubby and boating friends.  Then I spend the rest of the evening with my mah jongg friends ( though 3 did not spend the night.)

  • Sunday – Started the day with a few sets of tennis and then we went for a walk. Two more friends arrived and after lunch, we spent the rest of the day playing mah jongg.

Fun weekend spent with good friends.  I did miss boating (cuz the weather was perfect) but hopefully I’ll get to do that next weekend.

23 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday 11 mile run, STEM orientation
  • Tuesday – gym, rest, PM tennis, dinner out

Monday Running Update

mon r u
Last Week:

  • Monday –  I drove up to Bolton Landing (on Lake George) today.  I managed to squeeze in a short run before everyone wanted to head out on the lake.

img_0590

We spent the whole day on the lake – at a dock on an island and then in the bay before heading back to barbecue at the marina and watch the fireworks.

img_0659

  • Tuesday –  While everyone had to drive home to go to work, I again decided to take advantage of my free time and stayed up at the lake. My legs were tired but I dragged myself for 3 slow miles.

img_0647

I managed to get a sub for tennis so stayed up on the lake and spent a relaxing day by myself- got in lots of walks, beach time and reading.

  • Wednesday – This morning I went for a hike up to the top of Thomas Mountain.  I had planned to repeat the hike I took last week, but accidentally took the blue trail instead of the orange one – a lot more challenging and a different view.
img_0707

I didn’t fall and so it was worth it for the new view but I took the orange trail down… didn’t want to push my luck

I had planned to meet Alyssa and Barbara for an ice cream run sponsored by Fleet Feet and Saucony so I headed home.

img_0705

It was very very hot and my run very very slow but the ice cream was GOOD.

  • Thursday – I played tennis in the am with the Troy Tennis Group and went out for dinner with an old friend. No running today.
img_0719

sorry I didn’t get a pic of the crepes with hazelnut sauce & bananas

  • Friday – Again I played tennis in the am on the courts near my house. Still incredibly hot. I planned on running after dinner and before my weekly mah jongg game but I waited too long and it started to pour.  Another no running day.
  • Saturday – This morning I actually got my run in before the rain.

img_0733

And I stopped off at the gym before heading to the grocery store.

img_0738

  • Sunday – Started off the day with a 5k race (I ran the half there 2 years ago). It was just raining or pouring the whole race.  Got a medal, tech shirt and a pint glass for 1st in my age group so all is good.

img_0754

When I got home, the rain had stopped. I was tired but managed a few more miles.

img_0753

Then headed back to Saratoga for  mini golf birthday party.

img_0764

18.5 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday -tennis AM, rest
  • Tuesday – tennis Am, tennis picnic, 4 mile run with a friend
  • Wednesday rest, work webinar
  • Thursday –  AM tennis, 3 mile run with a friend
  • Friday –  AM tennis, 4 mile run
  • Saturday, Sunday – tennis weekend at Schroon River house – lots of tennis and maybe a run

Ultimate Coffee Date – July

Since today is the first Saturday in July,  I am joining up with CocoDeborah, and Lynda for their ultimate coffee date.

The Ultimate Coffee Date

Where did June go?  I felt like I just wrote June’s UCD post.

Anyway…

Over coffee or tea

I’d tell you that along with loss of my blogging mojo, I’ve lost my running mojo.

I had started writing Wednesday & Thursday posts and just didn’t feel like finishing them and posting.

Now instead of running, I am writing this post.

It’s perfect running weather – cool & breezy but here I sit at my computer.

It’s basically because I have too much free time (I need a busy schedule) and I am in a funk about being unemployed.

Over coffee or tea

I’d tell you that I am liking playing tennis everyday with different people.  Because the groups play at a certain time, you have to show up.  No procrastinating. I am meeting lots of new people. It’s a great diversion from job hunting.

img_0332

Over coffee or tea

I’d tell you that I have a new running friend.  Don’t worry Judy & Barbara, I still need you guys.

I met her on FB and we have run twice together and plan to again next week.  She is training for a marathon and no, I am not tempted.

13508972_1818003835089003_7257062188135281987_n

Alyssa

Over coffee or tea

I’d tell you I’m going through Starbucks withdrawal.  I am saving money not working across the street from a Starbucks.  I haven’t given it up totally since there is one when I shop at Target or grocery shop at Price Chopper.  Yesterday I had to resort to making my own chocolate banana protein smoothie.

img_0500

Over coffee or tea

I’d tell you that I bit the bullet and signed for a SUP class tomorrow.  I even talked Judy into it.  I’m a little nervous because I can’t bend my ankle due to all the hardware in it and I can’t balance because of it.  I guess the worst that can happen is that I will look like a fool and get wet.

Hopefully, I learn enough to be able to SUP on Lake George.

Over coffee or tea

I’d tell you that I have been racing a lot.  I’ve run 4 races in June – three 5ks and a 10 miler.

But this weekend I am not racing. The only race around here is Monday and I’d rather be up at the lake.

20140707-135858-50338555.jpg

I did sign up for at least 3 in July.

Over coffee or tea

I’d tell you that July 4th is one of my favorite holidays.  I love the fireworks.  I have watched them every year ever since I was a kid.

watching the fireworks from our boat

Now we get to watch them over the lake.

Happy 4th!

Happy Running! Anything to spill?  Are you racing this weekend?  Do you like to watch the fireworks? Have you tried SUPing? Anyone watching the Olympic Trails?

Monday Running Update

Last Week:

  • Monday –  I stayed up at Bolton Landing (on Lake George) today.  Started the day with a scenic 7 mile run.

img_0272

Then went for two hikes.  My first solo hikes and they were awesome.

img_0299

img_0321

  • Tuesday –  Today I played tennis twice.  I subbed in a new group near my house (walked to the courts) and then played with my usual Tuesday evening group.
  • Wednesday –  In the morning, I played tennis in my 2nd country club robin-robin. It was cool, windy and even rained.

img_0332

The weather cleared up later in the day and I went for a run on the rail trail with Alyssa, a new running friend.

img_0331

a very speed non-stop run – she pushed me but she said I pushed her.

  • Thursday – Morning tennis with my Troy Tennis group and dinner out with a former co-worker.
img_0337

I talked my friend into a 4 mile walk after dinner (She may no longer be my friend LOL)

  • Friday – An exciting day in NYC. Thanks Judy for letting me plan your crazy day.  We took the train to the city, checked our bag in Macys, hopped the subway to Central Park, had a quick lunch and ran 4 miles through the park with a tour guide.
img_0392

great way to learn about the history of the park and get in some exercise

After the tour, I had ice cream, then we walked some more in the park, went to the zoo, walked ALL the way back to Macys, changed our clothes and had dinner at a cute restaurant with French running blogger, Karen before heading back home on the train.

img_0396

  • Saturday – Definitely a rest day filled with errands, laundry, housework, etc.
  • Sunday – Today I ran the Adirondack Distance Race – 10 miles from Lake George to Bolton Landing

Monday Running Update

mon r u
Last Week:

  • Monday – Another Florida vacation day – running, playing tennis, tennis lessons then off to the beach.  Of course, we ate dinner out in another great restaurant.

  • Tuesday – We couldn’t have gotten luckier with the weather.  Yes, it was very hot and very humid but I loved it. Again. I got up early and went for a short run.

Today we played tennis but didn’t have a lesson.  Instead we went to the Naples Botanical Gardens followed by the beach.

  • Wednesday – Last day of vacation.  I went for my last morning run.  Then we played tennis and I went for a long walk with a friend.  We packed and relaxed at the pool until it was time to leave.

We had a late flight home so ate dinner at the airport.

  • Thursday – Back to reality.  After 7 days in a row of running, I did not run today.  I did go for a walk at lunch.  I must have brought the Florida weather home with me because it was just as warm (but not as humid.)

tulips gone – time for irises

  • Friday – I missed my STEM runners so I planned to run with them after work instead of mah jongg. But they didn’t show 😦

afternoon walk to the park

  • Saturday – Off to Vermont to prepare for my half marathon.  As soon as I arrived, AJH & I headed out to the expo. Then we went out to lunch, walked around the waterfront and spent a relaxing evening at AJH’s.

2016

  • Sunday – VCM relay – 20th half marathon done as the second half of a marathon. Proud to have finished upright in a puddle of sweat especially since it was cancelled due to extreme heat when I was only at mile 5.
