Weekly Run Down for 11.25.19-12.1.19: Turkey (Trotting) Week

Yup, time to race so you can eat all the turkey and fixings.

Last Week –

  • Monday – After a miserable weather day on Sunday, I was happy to see the rain stop. Chris and I as usual headed to UAlbany after work.

  • Tuesday – Normally my rest day but I needed to cook and rest on Wednesday so I decided to squeeze in a run before meeting my BFF for a walk around the mall. Of course, not having any friends to meet, I procrastinated for about an hour before leaving my office. But with 50 degrees in November, I was glad I got out there.

UAlbany loop…again!

  • Wednesday – Rest day after work so I could make some of Marcia‘s soup to bring to Thanksgiving dinner. Glad the hubby agreed to pick up my bibs for the next day’s races.
  • Thursday – A Turkey Trot has been a tradition since I started running. This year again I ran the Troy Turkey Trot 10k and followed it with the 5k. It was cold and with the wind and a sore foot, I had 2 course PWs but still had a fun time.

carrying on the tradition

Afterwards there was the BIG dinner with the fam and I ate back all the calories that were burned off during those 9.3 miles.

Thanks Marcia, the soup was a big hit

  • Friday – Another rest day. Black Friday but I had to work and didn’t buy a thing!!

except for a Peppermint Mocha –  thanks Cari

  • Saturday – Normally a run with my Sole Sisters but I had to go to a funeral. Besides I had already done my long run on Thursday and should be resting my foot. I did join my friends for brunch.
  • Sunday – Rest day. Third one in a row. Another tradition has been to celebrate my mentee’s birthday by painting. Well the impending snowstorm put a wrench on that. We’ll have to reschedule. Instead I went to the gym (resting my foot)

an hour on this machine while facing the route I normally on i.e. watching runners go by 😦

and then to the movies during the snowstorm.

Weekly Run Down for 11.19-11.25.19: On the Road Again

Next big race is not until January 19…Fred Lebow Half Marathon in NYC  so I am enjoying my downtime.

But I had to travel for work. At least it was NYC.

Last Week –

  • Monday – Rain, freezing rain..ugh. Glad that I had run the day before.
  • Tuesday – Snow today!!! But it stopped and I met up with friends to run after work.  It’s getting boring already because we have to run at UAlbany since it is lit up at night and clear when there is ice or snow.

  • Wednesday – Off to NYC by train for work. I was able to get there early enough to squeeze in a run along the Hudson,

warm and sunny when I started and cold and windy when I finished

a sunset climb of the Vessel,

and then a meet up with Elizabeth and Cari to celebrate Cari’s birthday.

so lucky to have met these ladies

  • Thursday – After a long work day, there was not enough time to run because…

I had tickets to see Hamilton. It was awesome…everything I had heard about the show was true…LOVED it.

(The truth was that I walked 40 blocks in boots Wed night and then walked and stood all day today in uncomfortable work shoes…my feet were KILLING me!)

  • Friday – Another rest day since I had to head home right after work. Even though I wore my running shoes to work…my left foot (actually the ball of the foot) was very painful… I could hardly walk.)
  • Saturday – I originally had planned to run a local 5k (but I really never liked the race since it is crowded with young kids – benefits Girls on the Run) so instead I chose a long run with my Sole Sisters on the local rail trail. However, I had made the decision the night before to rest my foot so I did not go (Glad I didn’t register for the GOTR 5k).  Instead I went to the gym and then joined my running friends for brunch. Well, I iced my foot and the pain was virtually gone… I did errands and waited for the pain to return…it did not.. I hate to waste a sunny Saturday so I did run!! Not long and not fast and I did not regret it.

  • Sunday – Rest day (and a rainy one) so I did some errands (nails, groceries, library) while tracking my good friend Alyssa who was running the Philly Marathon…so sorry that the weather was horrific.

In the afternoon, I went to another Cat Yoga class. This one was held where I normally take yoga classes and it was a fundraiser for a local adoption service. So fun and lots of cats and kittens (tempted but no I didn’t take one home.)

This Coming Week –

  • Monday – run with friends
  • Tuesday –  run, mall walk with BFF
  • Wednesday – rest day, bib pick up, cooking
  • Thursday – Troy Turkey Trot 10k and 5K
  • Friday – rest day, mah jongg
  • Saturday – run with Sole Sisters
  • Sunday – rest day, painting B-Day celebration with mentee

I guess all the cool kids are doing this so here’s my TEN Year CHALLENGE contribution:

running 3.1 miles in a cotton tee shirt and shorts vs running 26.2 miles in a tech tank and skirt

Weekly Run Down for 11.11.19-11.17.19: Back to Normal

Marathon training is over..Back to normal running and racing.

Next big race is January 19…Fred Lebow Half Marathon in NYC (yup, I caved and signed up) and then February 16 …ZOOMA Half Marathon (Bermuda) followed by on March 15:

so unexpected but so exciting…this time I hope I will not be injured

So training doesn’t really start until December. I plan to enjoy my downtime.

Last Week –

  • Monday – After my 15k race on the previous day, I had planned to take the day off but with the impending icy mix forecast and a work holiday, I decided to indeed go for a run. It was cold and dreary but I chose a trail at Five Rivers Environmental Center and it was perfect.

I wasn’t the only crazy person out there..bumped into a former co-worker/runner.

In addition to de-cluttering, cooking (soup) and errands, I went a Hot Yoga class then out to dinner.

  • Tuesday – Even colder than the day before and snow/sleet/rain mix in the morning. I am not enjoying this early winter.  At least I had company for my after work run.

that UAlbany loop with Chris

  • Wednesday – Yet another frigid day but today the sun was shining. Unfortunately it is almost dark when I get out of work. But again I had a friend to run with. Due to icy conditions and darkness, we ran on that boring UAlbany loop. Although the temps were colder, no wind so it was more comfortable as Karen and I chatted about NYC marathon which we both had just run.

  • Thursday – Finally a rest day and my monthly dinner out with my tennis friends.  Always a good time!!

good food with good friends

  • Friday – Another rest day and a evening with the mah jongg ladies.
  • Saturday – A long run with my Sole Sisters. So nice to not have to actually run “long” since I am NOT training for anything….yet. There were 8 of us but I ran with Barbara. We all started at different times and ran different distances but I think every one had someone to run with.

chilly but lots of sunshine which made all the difference (and someone to talk to)

After brunch, I rushed home because I signed up for my 2nd yoga class of the week. I wasn’t planning to but this one was designed for runners and focusing on lower back and spine.  Yup, just what I needed. I plan to go again next month.

2 hours of stretches and yoga with lots of props – best class!

  • Sunday – Rest day usually but I decided on a recovery run since the weather forecast for Monday looked iffy and Jeri (and her dog) wanted some company.

we started later since it was 15 degrees when I got up but it warmed up and we were treated to a sunny run with no wind

This Coming Week –

  • Monday – rest day
  • Tuesday –  run with friends at Ualbany
  • Wednesday – train to NYC, run and dinner with Cari & Elizabeth
  • Thursday – rest day, HAMILTON!!!
  • Friday – rest day, train home
  • Saturday – run
  • Sunday – rest day, cat yoga

Weekly Run Down for 11.4.19-11.10.19: Recovery Week

Post-race let down?

Nope, still savoring the moment.

Can’t believe that I actually ran the NYC Marathon!!

Last Week –

  • Monday  – A busy recovery day in NYC. I got up early, had breakfast in the hotel. Then I had an appt. at RECOVER, followed by Lacey and I climbing the Vessel to take a picture with ours medals (what else?) Afterward we met Cari for a post race recovery lunch – Mazoh Ball soup and lox. Cari & I walked Lacey to the train and then took the subway to Jack Rabbit for more recovery and freebies before we separated. She took the subway back to her apt and I to Penn Station to catch my train home.

Loved the Normatec boots (did them twice)..and we talked the attendant in letting us take the ADA elevator down (had to hide our medals lol)

  • Tuesday – Back home and at work. Still recovering but I had signed up for a yoga class (Cat Yoga) because I had taken it before (and it was fun) and I wanted to support my friend Judy who was teaching it as her first class.

I was a little stiff, of course, but enjoyed the cute kitties (and didn’t come home with another cat…this time.)

  • Wednesday – Still in supposed recovery mode though tempted to run. Good thing I had a chiro appt. She was surprised at how fast I bounced back. Not much for her to do. Lol.
  • Thursday – Ok, enough rest. I wanted to take the post marathon legs out for a short run. But rain/snow thwarted that idea. Instead I went out to celebrate.
  • Friday – I planned to get up early and run but 20 degrees. Yikes.  Instead after work, I ran a loop at Ualbany and rushed home as I had to clean my house since I was hosting mah jongg.

cold & windy so I ran fast

My friends brought me delicious cupcakes to celebrate my marathon and I won several times. Good times.

  • Saturday – Resting again due to a race the next day. Instead of a run, I went for a walk with my running friends, had brunch and then went on errands and to pick up my bib.

too cold & windy to walk the whole 4 miles so Sherry & I ran the last mile

  • Sunday – In a moment of insanity, I signed up for a local 15k race a week after my first full marathon. I didn’t know how it would go but I decided to do it since I love this race and what’s 9.3 miles compared to 26.2? Well, my legs weren’t as recovered as I thought so I took it slow and ran/walked it.  Bumped into a lot of runners that I knew and even ran most of the race with someone.

don’t have to run fast to enjoy a race… over 6 minutes slower than last year & I don’t care 🙂

This Coming Week –

  • Monday – DAY OFF – run/walk
  • Tuesday –  run
  • Wednesday – run
  • Thursday – rest day, dinner with tennis friends
  • Friday – rest day, mah jongg
  • Saturday – run
  • Sunday – rest

Weekly Run Down from 10.28.19-11.3.19: Race Week!!

After 18 weeks of training it came down to this….

Last Week –

  • Monday – After work run. I ran solo today near my home because I was having dinner with friends nearby. Another beautiful fall day on the rail trail.
a white cat passed in front of me. good luck, right? (top pic)

The friends that I had dinner with were planning to drive down to NYC to catch me sometime during the marathon (crazy, right?) We discussed their plans. We’ll see what happens on Sunday. I am so grateful that they are even thinking of doing this.

  • Tuesday – Another after work run. This time my running friend Chris ran with me on a UAlbany loop. Glad she was there to drag me along (I had gotten up at 3 am to take the hubby to the airport.)

Afterward, I met my BFF for a walk around the mall.

  • Wednesday – Last run before the Marathon!!  Just a short one on the rail trail (but in a different spot from Monday.)

like my photo fail? (top pic)

  • Thursday – Rest Day due to a scheduled hair appt. and of course, candy distribution to neighborhood kids. (No Kit Kats left for me!! Yay!!)

  • Friday – Another rest day and I needed to pack for the weekend (mostly throw away race clothes LOL). I played mah jongg in the evening to take my mind off the race.
  • Saturday –  Rest Day #3 in a row….This morning I took the train to NYC, met my roommate Lacey, checked into the hotel and then headed to the expo to pick up my race bib. We took a lot of goofy photos, checked out all the free samples.

My plan was to attend a few of the podcasts at the Run Center or meet Meb at Marriott and then head back to the expo to do some shopping….

best decision – Meb was fantastic. And all I bought at the expo was a car magnet.

And not walk too much but you know how that goes in NYC. Then carb load, maybe catch the sunset at the Vessel and finally go to bed early.

oops. missed the sunset so explored the 5th floor of Hudson Yards

Check IG @dsc59 for more pics.

  • Sunday – RACE DAY! MY FIRST MARATHON! NEW YORK CITY!! Early wake up to walk to the NYC Library to catch the 7 am bus to the Verrazzano-Narrows bridge where I waited with other Green Wave 3, corral D runners until our scheduled 10:35ish am start.

I ran, I walked, I cried and ….. eventually I finished 26.2 miles.

Rode the bus with Cari and hung out in the village before the race start….ran with someone I knew from Albany for many miles in Brooklyn, hugged my local tennis friends at mile 17.5…struggled with a lot of pain but crossed the finish line with a smile!!

Check IG @dsc59 for more pics.

I.Am.A.Marathoner. (More details in a later post.)

This Coming Week – Recovery Week

  • Monday – rest day in NYC, recovery stuff, photo op at the Vessel, lunch with Cari, bus/train home
  • Tuesday –  rest day, Cat Yoga??
  • Wednesday – rest day, chiro appt.
  • Thursday – rest day, trip to the gym?
  • Friday – run, mah jongg chez moi

Weekly Run Down for 10.21.19-10.27.19: Taper Time

No work travel again this week. Just the normal stuff.

And it’s taper time for my NYCM training.

Last Week –

  • Monday  – I met some friends after work on the rail trail. They walked and the reason for our meeting was to say good-bye to one of the group who was leaving for Florida and would be gone until spring. I ran some and walked some.

I ran 2, walked 2 and ran 1.

  • Tuesday – Rest day due to some rain. I had errands to do anyway.
  • Wednesday – An after work run on the Corning Bike Path. I was exhausted and really did NOT feel like running but I had to agreed to meet a friend.  I walked more than usual but it was great to get out there on this beautiful fall weather evening.

  • Thursday – For today’s after work run I had two friends to run with and we were back on the UAlbany campus since it is convenient for all of us. Karen is also running NYCM so you can guess what we chatted about while we ran.

and it was almost 70 degrees!!!

  • Friday – Rest Day and mah jongg night.
  • Saturday – Last long run before the marathon. If you can call it “long.” I only had to run 8 miles. My running friends were busy and I was solo so I decided to go to a place that I hadn’t run in awhile. Luckily I did find three runners that I knew to run with (from another running group) there.  I ran 4 miles with Nancy, Barb and Sue and then 2 more with Barb. I planned on running 8 but Barb showed me a new path and we just wound up running 4 more. The scenery, the weather and the conversation were great.

near Peebles Island/Waterford

I had planned on running around Peebles Island originally but instead I decided to take a walk around the island before heading home .. best decision!! I forgot how beautiful it is here.

We finally went out to dinner to celebrate my stepson’s birthday in the evening. Let the carb loading begin…

  • Sunday – Today I signed up to volunteer at a Trail Race. I didn’t plan to run it and I do not volunteer often enough. It took place at Thacher Park, which I love. Forecast was for heavy rain and wind… and I woke up in the middle of the night with an upset stomach.  A Big DNS.  Sorry, ARE. I promise to volunteer at a future race!!!!

Finally watched (for the first time) Spirit of the Marathon and the Fred Lebow Story.  Cried during both.

This Coming Week – Marathon Training Week 18

  • Monday – run 4 mi., dinner w/friend
  • Tuesday –  run 3 mi, mall walk w/BFF
  • Wednesday – run 2 mi.
  • Thursday – rest day, hair appt
  • Friday – rest and pack
  • Saturday – rest day, train to NYC, expo, carb load
  • Sunday – NYC Marathon!!!!!

Weekly Run Down for 10.14.19-10.20.19: Home Sweet Home

No work travel this week. Just the normal busy stuff.

Now that I have free time during the week to actually to do my training miles, it’s taper time for my NYCM training. It figures….

Last Week –

  • Monday  – Even though it was the day after my 20 miler, I signed up for a race, Lawson Lake Trail Run. I had the day off and it was only a 5k trail race. I planned to just walk it. After experiencing lots of discomfort the previous day, I was surprised to wake up feeling as if I had NOT run the day before. Still I walked most of it and It was a fun time. The weather was awesome, the course scenic and some of my friends came as well.

probably less than 3 since Jan and I made a wrong turn

After the race, my hubby and I decided to make one last quick trip to the lake. We even made our last trip to Martha’s for ice cream (sorry no pic)

  • Tuesday – With rain in the forecast for the next two days, my running friend and I headed to run the UAlbany loop after work. We ran in the opposite direction from last week and discussed alternate places to run. Afterward I met my BFF to chat and walk around the mall.

  • Wednesday – There was a scheduled SOAR run today after work on the rail trail. But it was raining so I bailed.
  • Thursday – Long work day and it rained all day and night but it was not raining when I left work so I ran on the Corning Bike path. I had the company again of a friend. Definitely made the difference.

Afterward I rushed off to have dinner with some tennis friends.

delicious dinner…miss these ladies since I don’t play tennis anymore

  • Friday – Rest day…Chiro appt and then time to relax and play mah jongg.
  • Saturday – Only a 12 mile run for this week. Start of my TAPER! We chose the local rail trail and the weather was PERFECT!! (cool and sunny). I ran the first 5 miles solo, then the last 7 with Barbara and Judy and joined the others (Sherry, Chris, Jeri) afterward for brunch.

so lucky to always have friends to do my LONG runs with (and brunch with)

No rest for the weary. As soon I was done with post run brunch, I drove with a college friend to meet another college friend for a mini reunion on the Walkway Bridge Over the Hudson.

friends since 1973….. ❤ ❤ ❤

  • Sunday – Rest Day and no boating… just nothing. Aaaah.

(Actually laundry, cleaning and errands…pretty tiring …on 2nd thought…rather go running lol)

This Coming Week – Marathon Training Week 17

  • Monday – run
  • Tuesday –  rest day
  • Wednesday – run
  • Thursday – run
  • Friday – rest day, mah jongg
  • Saturday – LONG RUN – 8 – Maybe a 5k race (+ 5)

Weekly Run Down for 10.7.19-10.13.19: Travel and the Dreaded 20 Miler

ru

Work Travel Again. But it’s the last trip (for a little while, I hope)

A Half Marathon happened at the end of the week as part of my 20 miler.

Almost taper time for my NYCM training.

Last Week

  • Monday  – Work trip to Sullivan County. It was supposed to be raining in the am so I didn’t plan to run before leaving. Of course it was not. But it rained the rest of the day. And hard. I had no choice but to run on the hotel treadmill. I was alone and there was TV but still hated it.

  • Tuesday – After a long work day, I went back to my hotel to change in search of some place nearby to run safely. I discovered a rail trail not too far away and headed there. The foliage colors were awesome and though I was tired, this run energized me.

Mountain Dale Rails to Trails

After 4.5 miles, I headed off the trail to get to 5 miles. My reward:

  • Wednesday – It again was supposed to rain but I changed into running clothes just in case. I had hoped to run on a rail trail that I had passed on my way Monday. It looked like it was going to rain soon so instead I found a trail near work. It turned out to be too muddy and full of roots to run on. Instead I walked. Almost got lost several times but I made it all around the lake before the rain.

Hanofee Park

  • Thursday – Back home and able to run after work with a friend. For convenience purposes, we hit the UAlbany loop.

we verged off the loop to run around Indian Pond

Then I went to the movies with friends (I skipped the restaurant dinner in favor of a run…it was a HARD decision.).

Renee Zellweger was fabulous but such a sad story.

  • Friday – Time to rest, unpack and play mah jongg. But first a quick run on the local rail trail (nice weather and there aren’t too many of those in the future.)

loved the wall art and the many painted rocks along the course

  • Saturday – My friends were running a race today. FOMO since it is one race I’ve done every year. Instead I started the day with a trip to the expo to pick up my bib for Sunday’s half.

Then the hubby and I drove up to Lake George for our LAST boating day of the season. The weather was again PERFECT and I spent a relaxing day with our friends.

  • Sunday – Yes, today was the day of the 20 miler. My only one during marathon training. I drove to the start of the Hannaford Half Marathon and in the dark ran 7 miles. (I started out on the trail but it was too dark so I ran on the road and then returned to the trail once the sun came up.)

Then I ran 13.2 more miles as part of the race.  Being a local race, it was nice to see so many familiar faces. (Even met up with Cari from NYC who was visiting her brother.) The first 6 miles went very well. Maybe too well. The last 7 were very painful…everything hurt.  But I was lucky to have a friend run the last mile or so with me and to have my running friends cheer me through the finish line, So it was harder than I thought but the 20 miler is done. Bring on the taper!

Weekly Run Down for 9.30-10.6.19: Work Travel and Fun Travel

ru

Travel and more travel. First to Long Island for work and then at the end of the week to NYC for a 10k and a Broadway show

NYCM training may have taken a back seat this week. 33 on the schedule.  Less than 13 miles completed!!!!!!!!

Last Week

  • Monday  – After a very long drive to Ronkonkoma and set up, I checked into my hotel and looked for a place to run. Someone at the hotel recommended Blydenburgh Park. And it was lovely. Lots of trails intended for horse back riding I believe.

so many swans on the lake and deer in the woods

  • Tuesday – Long work day and no time to run. I had to drive to Uniondale and check into another hotel and then drive to Bellmore to have dinner with two high school friends. Lots of driving but always fun to reconnect with old friends and laugh about the old days.

yes they are twins!

  • Wednesday – Another forced rest day since I had to go to work extra early and fight the traffic for a long drive home (5.5 hours!). I thought about an early morning but it was dark and I hate the mill. Besides I was pooped. Interesting weather. Left LI at 92 degree and arrived home at 52 degrees.
  • Thursday – Finally a run. And I was supposed to meet some friends to run locally after work. RAIN!!!!!!!! Don’t be shocked but I actually ran on the treadmill at the gym. Desperate measures. I.Hated.Every.Second.

  • Friday – Another Rest day.  Bus to NYC. After I checked into my hotel, I headed out to pick up my bib for my race the next day and meet up with Cari. Instead of resting my legs, I walked to NYRR, then Cari and I walked toward my hotel.  I got some pizza and ice cream and then walked around Hudson Yards.

  • Saturday – Normally a Long Run Day with my Sole Sisters.  But instead, today was my annual trip to NYC with my tennis friends for lunch and a Broadway show. So of course, I squeezed in a race, the Grete Gallop 10k first. (My first missed long run 😦 ). Normally I would have taken the subway to and from the race to rest my legs. But today, I wanted to add miles to my legs (and the race was just for fun). It was a struggle and hopefully those Central Park hills helped to prepare me for Nov. 3. I loved the race (and did run UP all those hills). The weather was perfect and even with 8000 runners and hills, I placed 3rd in my age group. 🙂

made two new friends waiting to start (one is pictured)

Then afterwards I walked back to my hotel, changed and walked to meet my tennis friends for lunch (Valerie’s on 45th) and then to Broadway to see Hadestown. Great show!!

that’s nutella filled French toast with a side of bacon

After the show, we walked back. I stopped at my hotel and then met the girls for a quick dinner before heading home.

Definitely a long BUT fun-filled day. 14 miles on the legs!!!!!  (6 miles run + 8 miles walking).

  • Sunday – Boating Sunday on Lake George? Nope. I wanted to go but the hubby thought it was too cold and windy. Wimp LOL.

Weekly Run Down for 9.23.19-9.29.19: Another Week, Another Town

ru

Another week of work travel. Sigh.

Last week it was Rochester. This week, Binghamton.

And trying to train for NYCM.

Last Week

  • Monday  – Summer returned with a vengeance. Almost 90 degrees and oppressive humidity.  I’ve run in worse conditions but I guess I got spoiled with last week’s weather. This UAlbany loop run felt tough. Luckily I had a friend to push me through.

as soon as we finished, the skies opened up.

  • Tuesday – Off to Binghamton with all my computers. I had never worked here before so I did my research and discovered a short rail trail in Vestal not far from my hotel. It was nice to find a place to run but it was between two highways so all you could hear was traffic.

There was a cafe where I parked and I had dinner there and then went for a walk on the trail in the other direction.

  • Wednesday – I went back to the same trail after work. Didn’t run on trail but ran through town but ate dinner at the same cafe. The owner is runner and we talked about races, of course.

  • Thursday – Last day in Binghamton and I ran the trail again but in the direction that I walked the first night.

  • Friday – Rest day.  Long drive home.
  • Saturday – Long Run Day with my Sole Sisters. I had 14 on my plan and was fortunate to have various runners to accompany me on many of miles.

Afterward was group brunch, followed by errands, unpacking and dinner out finally with the hubby.

and apple pie for dessert

  • Sunday – Boating Sunday on Lake George. The hubby thought that it would be chilly but it was not. We docked in a bay, had lunch and hung out enjoying the sunshine.

On the way home we stopped at my MIL’s to celebrate her 94th birthday.
