Weekly Run Down for 4.19.21-4.25.21: Recovery Week and Signs of Spring

Living in the NE, we seem to be behind everyone else with signs of Spring and it also such a short season. Before we know it, it will be hot and humid.

My running actually was related to weather not recovery.  All the hiking I did the next day seemed to alleviate any stiffness in my legs.

Hit #40 for my 2021 Hike Challenge:

Last Week:

  • Monday – Today’s forecast was for occasional rain showers. With work, it is always a challenge to time my run just right. I drove to near the rail trail and it started to rain as soon as I got there. I grabbed my jacket and continued on my run. Of course, it did stop and I was sweating.

The house on the top left had necklaces hanging from her tree. When I asked why, she said they do it New Orleans. After I took the picture on the bottom left, an old man came out of his house down the street and asked what I was doing. I explained that I like pink flowers. He then grumbled something.

When I looked the weather for Wed & Thurs, it looked like I may have to skip my runs.  So I opted for run #2 today. After another quick rain shower, I drove to UAlbany.

all the cherry blossoms from last year were gone but I found some other interesting sights

Then I met my BFF for a long walk at the nearby outdoor mall.

  • Tuesday – Too busy a work day to get in a run (and I ran twice the day before). So just a short walk at lunch and a hair appointment after work. It was light enough afterward that I was able to get in a quick hike at a nearby trail (oops forgot my phone for pix.)  Then I met my walking friends for snacks (and wine).
  • Wednesday – A predicted rainy day. It did rain on and off and I was hoping like Monday to time it right and get in my run between showers. It was cloudy and the 40s at lunch. Of course, it started to rain, stopped, got sunny and then started to rain again. Crazy weather.

definitely overdressed…. still waiting for tulips. Maybe next week.

  • Thursday – A very windy cold day with a chance of snow flurries (seriously?) I took a chance and drove to do my run on the rail trail.

It was crazy windy and snowing when I started my run and then the sun came out and it got even windier. At least I remembered to wear green for Earth Day. Did you?

I met my friends after work for a long walk (too windy for the rail trail so back to the outdoor mall.)

  • Friday – As usual Friday was my rest day (due a long run the next day.) Of course, it may have been the first sunny day of the week. I decided to take my bike out for the FIRST time this year.

needs a major tune-up I think

But since I had had not hit a single trail all week, I headed out for a hike after dinner.  Waterfalls, of course.

very pretty and many more trails that I had time to cover

Loving the extra daylight and I took advantage and stopped off at a nearby trail.

the extra rain has made the waterfalls even more impressive but some of the trails were too muddy to hike on.

  • Saturday – Long Run Saturday.  Even though my half marathon was done, I still intended (if possible) to meet up with my friends for brunch and run 10 miles each weekend. We met at various times for a variety miles at the rail trail. I started early and ran 3 miles alone and then ran 7 more miles with Sherry and Stan.

Stan & I were both wearing a shirt from the Brooklyn half marathon.

With rain predicted for Sunday and my impending vacation, I was anxious to get in at least one more hike on the trails. Especially since the weather was gorgeous. I decided to drive about an hour and instead of exploring waterfalls, I hiked and climbed a fire tower.

beautiful views and I met a lovely couple to hike with

The couple whom I met recommended another nearby hike and it was pretty as well (but longer).

view of the Hudson, the train and a variety of terrain.

  • Sunday – A rainy day which worked out perfectly since I needed to get ready to leave on my vacation. First order of business was to get my nails done. Since the salon opened later than I thought, I made a spur of the moment decision to head to the park to see how the tulips were faring.  It was raining but not hard.  I was shocked…so many were already in bloom. Not all. I bet they will be in full bloom next weekend (when I am in Florida.)

my favorite time of year…

The rain stopped so I decided to go for a walk.

yup…more signs of spring

Finally, thanks to Cari for organizing this event.

Weekly Run Down for 4.12.21-4.18.21: Cherry Blossoms and Race Week!!

After a beautiful warm sunny week last week, it was not surprising that this week did not follow suit.

But my plan was to relax and take it slow… and enjoy the beginning signs of spring.

After a long two months, I finally ran another half marathon and in person!  This one was local and on the same course as the one I ran last November. It was fun to see all my friends again (even with the COVID restrictions.)

Last Week:

  • Monday – A rainy morning but by lunch it had stopped. A chilly cloudy day but glad to get outside. Unfortunately due to unexpected meet-up with a friend, I got delayed and wound up getting caught in the rain halfway though this run.

Got to see some early tulips but my hands and ears were so cold!!

Of course, the rain stopped by the time I finished.  I had to get back to work so I drove back to take pictures.

surprised to catch these at peak during my run UAlbany run. ❤ cherry blossoms!!

  • Tuesday – A busy work day so only had time for a quick neighborhood walk at lunch.

they are so short-lived, these beautiful blossoms

After work, I went for my usual LONG rail trail walk with friends.

always interesting sights – the highlight was a young girl roller blading holding a chicken!! The top left is the RD from Saturday’s race (and his wife).

  • Wednesday – Anxious to catch some more peak cherry blossom trees, I headed to Washington Park after work to run.

2 cherry blossom trees (but lots of pink magnolias) and only ONE tulip – lol

I only had time for a short run/walk since my running friend texted me and asked me to run with her at UAlbany.

two days later and the trees were mostly past peak with pretty pink “snow” on the ground. I was overdressed too (it was 70 degrees) – skirt/tank weather

Rush rush again- dinner plans with a friend. So nice to be able to socialize again (and she didn’t notice my sweaty running shirt under my jacket. lol)

  • Thursday – Rest Day. And a rainy one. I guess the timing worked out perfectly. It had stopped raining by lunch so I went for a walk.  It was downright chilly (down coat and beanie cold).

discovered another new trail nearby…seems to go on forever!!

After work, I was able to get my race packet and then since it was pouring go for a work in the mall.

  • Friday – A Second Rest Day with snow in the forecast!! There was a dusting in the morning but again it was chilly.

view of our tree from my window

After work, again due to rain, I went for a walk around an outside mall (with a friend).

  • SaturdayRace Day!!! With 1000 of my closest friends (lol), I ran 13.1 miles! Unfortunately, it was colder than I had hoped (so I changed my outfit at the last minute). And due to all the recent rain, the start and finish was crazy muddy.  But I finished. It was hard due to my too fast miles 1-5 and then the unending hills. But I ran a real race.  Life is good!

In the town where I live, people pain rocks and when you find them you post to FB and then move them. This afternoon, a massage studio sponsored a rock painting session. It was lots of fun and a good way to rest my weary legs for a few hours.

obviously I do not have much artistic talent lol

  • Sunday – It’s Hiking Sunday. I was hoping that my legs would allow me. But actually ikt was a beautiful day and hiking was what the doctor ordered.  I felt so better better afterwards. I, of course, needed my waterfalls fix and then I also hike two new trails in the same area.

Barbersville Falls (top left) and then the ridge trail (with lots of creek crossings) and then the nearby Creek trail (bottom pics).

This Coming Week on the Run –

  • Monday –  run, walk with BFF

Weekly Run Down for 4.5.21-4.11.21: Chasing Waterfalls and Tapering…

After a ugly weather week last week, this week started out promising.

The highlight of the week was that I had taken Wednesday off from work (to hike) and the weather was perfect. I used the day to continue my chase of the NYS Waterfalls.

Temps up to 60 degrees (and even 70, I think) and no rain all week.  (Not great for the flowers but good for the runner/walker/hiker.)

I even reach another milestone.

I think it may be time to take out the bike for a spin….

Last Week:

  • Monday – I used to be so good about getting out before work and going for a walk.  I have not done that in ages.  I did go for my run at lunch time. It was warm but still windy. The sun was shining so I was very grateful.

overdressing seems to be my spring theme…I’ll get it right eventually. Lots of Easter eggs on the trail and my daffodils finally bloomed.

After work, I went for a walk in the park searching for signs of spring

not much to report… no sign of the infamous tulips

and then met my BFF for a long walk around our outdoor mall.

  • Tuesday – Another nice sunny breezy day.  So why not a run on my rest day? lol

I started out on the water line but it was muddy so I switched to the neighborhood.

this run was rushed since I stopped to talk with a neighbor (she usually runs 10m everyday at 5 am and I hadn’t seen her in awhile…unfortunately she has breast cancer and is going through chemo. She continues to run only 5m and is training for the Chicago marathon). So inspired yet grateful to be healthy!!

and after work, I took a long walk on the rail trail with two friends.

we have now added after walk munchies or dinner lol

  • Wednesday – Re-arranged my rest day and went for a few hikes instead on my day off from work. I also had hired someone to deep clean my house (since I have been slacking in that dept and my regular cleaning lady moved away.)

As you probably know, I am waterfalls obsessed.  And since I had the whole day to myself, I decided to take a long drive (1h30) to Owen D. Young.  I heard that it was nice but I was not prepared for all the waterfalls in one place (plus caves and trails).

definitely worth the drive

Since I was already in the area, I Googled to see if there were any other waterfalls nearby. Yup, not too far away was Wintergreen Park and Trails.

My last stop was at Buttermilk Falls before heading home.

  • Thursday – A busy work day only allowed me to squeeze in a neighborhood run during lunch. And it was skirt weather. Woo Hoo!

Again, after work, I went for a long walk with friends on the rail trail. We do vary the direction now that we meet there twice a week.

  • Friday – A scheduled rest day.  Since the weather was still amazingly nice, I did go for a few walks. I went to the local park at lunch.

not many leaves on the trees, but a children’s walk, some Easter eggs and mud.

and then it was so nice a day that I went for another hike. And of course, there was a waterfall.

Across from these trails was another one which led you to the Hudson River.

  • Saturday – Long Run Saturday.  Our taper before the half marathon next Saturday. This week, we all met at the Nisky Bike Path and ran or walked our individual paces and distances and then had brunch together.

I wore different shoes and different socks and a result of one or the other got painful blisters (also could have been the humidity). A painful 10 miles but the taper is done. And brunch was great.

  • Sunday – Forecast called for showers so I headed out early hoping to squeeze in my hike and not get wet. I decided to go to Thacher Park where in the past I have run on some of the trails. Who knew how many waterfalls there were there…

it was warm and humid and it seemed that the rain would hold off for a while so I walked across the road and walked on another trail.

such pretty views

On my way to grocery shopping I stopped off to see if things has started to bloom….

just a start….

Weekly Run Down for 3.29.21-4.4.21: What Happened to Spring?

We got lucky with spring temps last week but this week, it seemed like winter again. Typical spring in the NE.

Fingers crossed that spring will return next week again.

Last Week:

  • Monday – Nasty weather in the morning – cloudy, cold with very high winds.  I decided to postpone my run until after work. At least the sun came out and it warmed up a bit but it still was very windy.

started out in the neighborhood but ended up on the rail trail – new sighting: a dog grave

Then I had to rush home for a mah jongg group book ZOOM. We discussed The Book of Lost Names. So fun to see everyone again (at least virtually.)

  • Tuesday – A busy work day so I decided not to run and instead do a quick walk in the park at lunch

oops I forgot my phone so no pics. Did you walk in the park today??

and then a long walk with friends after work (followed by dinner with them).  Unfortunately the evening ended badly with either a stomach flu or food poisoning (haven’t been that sick since I was kid.)

  • Wednesday – Still a windy day and rain/snow predicted for later and tomorrow. Still not feeling 100% but decided to try an easy run at lunch. I drove to a nearby neighborhood.

warm but very windy, saw my first daffodils and didn’t puke…win win.

After work, I always have that cooped up feeling and decided that I needed some fresh air.  And it hadn’t started raining…yet.

a long walk at Normanskill Farms = just what the doctor ordered

  • Thursday – Ugly rainy day.  Bike time at lunch and a walk with friends after work (back at the outside mall to stay dry). On my drive home, it started to sleet then snow.

still no blooms…poor cold daffodils

  • Friday – Winter temps returned.  Managed to squeeze in a cold walk at lunch. April (snow) showers bring May flowers, right?

maybe that’s why my Christmas Cactus is confused…

After work, I resorted to a mall walk and was treated to this on my way home. Glad I didn’t skip the walk.

  • SaturdayLong Run Saturday.  12 miles on my schedule and I picked Zim Smith for our group run.  We hadn’t been there in ages and we all love brunch after at Leah’s Cakery. Of course, that was the plan before our unexpected snowfall. Fortunately the path was clear, the sun was shining, no wind and the chilly temps actually were perfect for a long run. I ran the first 7 miles with Stan and Sherry. Luckily Stan left since his pace is way faster than mine.  I ran the next 4 with Sherry and dragged myself through the last mile solo.

the best part was the chocolate milk, quiche and brownie recovery (and yes it was chilly after when you are sweaty).

  • Sunday –  Hiking Sunday continued but an early one since it was Easter and I had to go to dinner at my MIL’s. I was not expecting how much I loved this one (Beebe Hill Trails). A decent climb, pond and creek view, lean-to, old cemetery and a Fire Tower!! (more pics on FB & IG)

I need to go back when I have more time to explore the other trails here.

After a huge meal and this:

Ever heard of Duck Donuts? My first experience. Yum.

I decided on a second hike.  This time it was a trail I had found out about but had forgotten about.  It lets you view the Cohoes Falls from the opposite side.  Th eonly problem was the MUD. I was covered to my knees lol

but I did make it to the end

Weekly Run Down for 3.22.21-3.28.21 – Finally Spring Weather

I have been complaining about it being cold and windy.

just last week

I’m happy to report there were days warm enough to wear a skirt and tank!!! (However, next week we will not be as lucky.)

Last Week:

  • Monday – Unfortunately I got dressed in the morning but didn’t get out to run until after work. But it was a very tiring day and my run just felt off (or maybe I was overdressed).

ran at UAlbany…not a good run but 3 miles nonetheless

Followed up my run with a long walk with my BFF (sweaty so now I felt chilled oy!)

  • Tuesday – Another picture perfect running day. Today I decided to squeeze in a neighborhood run during lunchtime. I dressed appropriately and my energy level may not have been any better than Monday but I had different expectations.

enjoyed the sunshine and used my walk breaks to photograph signs of spring

After work, I met up with a friend for a walk on the rail trail.

we got lucky and found several painted rocks

  • Wednesday – I was debating on whether to run or have a rest day. Well, the weather made my decision. It started raining earlier than predicted so I was going to skip my run and bike instead. But then the rain stopped so off I drove hoping to get in a few.  I didn’t run where I had planned because I wanted to stay close to my car in case of a downpour.

2 miles are better than none but got back to my car pretty soggy lol

  • Thursday – 60 degrees!! Woo Hoo. Of course I was excited to get in a run after yesterday’s rain. I drove into town during lunch. Unfortunately it was cloudy so it didn’t feel as warm as Tuesday.  Once I started running, I realized that it was humid so a tank would have been a better option.

and more painted rock sightings 🙂

After work, I was back on the rail trail for a walk with two friends. It was even warm enough to have wine and appetizers outside post-walk.

my friend decided to make her own rock

  • Friday – A scheduled rest day and this week it worked out perfectly since it was a rainy morning and a very windy evening.  I did a lot of yard work at lunch (X training, right?) and then walked in the mall after work.
  • SaturdayLong Run Saturday. As I mentioned last week, now all the snow and ice has melted which gave us many choices on places to do a long run. Someone suggested a run on a new bike path because it was hilly (Some of us are running a hilly half marathon in a few weeks.)  I was very skeptical about this.  I never train on hills and in a race, I walk them if they are steep. I even considered running alone on the flat Corning bike path. Fortunately Sherry agreed to run with me and then we met everyone else after for brunch. The weather gods were wonderful and it was beautiful out.

we both got very sweaty as it was sunny out…still working on dressing correctly for spring

After grocery shopping, I was back at it again with more x-training or yard work

  • Sunday – I was afraid Hiking Sunday would have to be postponed due to rain and wind. But I headed out early, drove quite a ways south and was able to cover some trails and see a waterfall.  I wanted to explore some more trails but I am glad I did not. It started to pour as soon as I left.

there was no ice or mud…definitely worth a trip to Bash Bish Falls.

Stuck indoors, I spent the rest of the day decluttering my closets.

This Coming Week –

  • Monday –  run,  walk
  • Tuesday – rest day, bike, walk with friends
  • Wednesday – run. walk
  • Thursday – run, walk with friends
  • Friday – rest day, bike, walk
  • Saturday – Long Run (12 m)

Weekly Run Down for 3.15.21-3.21.21: Welcoming Spring and My One Year Anniversary!

March 17, in addition to being St. Patrick’s Day was my ONE year anniversary of working from home.

my office and co-worker have not changed.

Spring also officially began.  Still waiting to see those blooms… And for those temperatures to rise!!!

But I am loving the extra hour of daylight.  Let the after work hikes begin….

And so I completed another milestone in my 52 Hike Challenge:

9 new ones and 15 from last year

Last Week:

  • Monday – Winter had returned with 0 degrees wind chill so I waited until after work to do my run. Still chilly and windy.

looks pretty with that blue sky but I was cooold!!!

  • Tuesday – Busy work day so only two walks. One at lunch and a longer one after work with a friend.
  • Wednesday – Still busy at work but I did have time to squeeze a run in at lunch.  A little warmer and less windy but pretty dreary out.

I made sure to wear my green for St. Patrick’s Day. Did you?

The best part of my day was my after work hike to Five Rivers… no snow, flowing water, deer, etc… so relaxing.

  • Thursday – I should have run before work but I was hoping that the rain would hold off. Nope. it was pouring at lunchtime so NO run for me. That also meant we were back at the outdoor mall for our after work walk.
  • Friday – Rest Day! It was sunny and since I skipped my run on Thursday, I was tempted to run but I never run the day before my long run so I walked instead.

I was hoping for some sign of spring at Pinehollow Arboretum…none seen but still beautiful

  • SaturdayLong Run Saturday returned.  With the snow all melted, we were able to choose one of the bike paths. Six of us met at the rail trail.  Some running, some walking and various distances and paces.  I seem to be dragging the caboose these days so still glad to have company for most of the miles.  It was even warm enough to have brunch outdoors.

the sun made it feel so much warmer than the temps…overdressed lol

Though my legs were a little tired, we were getting a new roof put on our house.  Too noisy to stay home so I set out on another hike, a nearby one.

sooo sooo muddy. Will not repeat this one for a while. (Normans Kill West)

  • Sunday – It was even nicer today…that meant it was a hiking day!!! I have a new challenge too. Columbia County Hike 5 (or 10) Challenge. I had two new ones on the plan for today.  I LOVED them both.

Ooms Conservation Areagreat views of the mountains and the lake and more… could have stayed all day

I got a recommendation about this trail while I was at Ooms.

Hand Hollow Conservation Area – wooded trail with creek views and a lake

Six miles for the day and I didn’t finish all the trails.

This Coming Week –

  • Monday –  run, walk
  • Tuesday – rest day, bike, walk with friends
  • Wednesday – run, walk
  • Thursday – run, walk with friends

Weekly Run Down for 3.8.21-3.14.21: Races!! A Virtual and a Real One

We had spring-like weather for a few days.  I completed a virtual 5k. And I ran my second Pandemic race of 2021 – a five miler.  Another PW but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Last Week:

  • Monday – It was International Women’s Day and the weather cooperated with sunshine.  I was able to get my run in at UAlbany at lunch since I had to stop by my nearby office anyway.

my skirt had 261 on it.. you know what that means, right?

It was even more special since I ran this virtual race with Cari in NYC and Liz in the UK.  Truly “international.”

  • Tuesday – The temps were even warmer today and there was some sun… I managed to squeeze in another #weekofpi run to honor Kim. Unfortunately the wind was back.

starting to change my wardrobe – no beanie and no tights!!

  • Wednesday – So exciting that it actually felt like spring.  I had the day off due to some early morning appts and then a hiking date with two friends.  No running today (sigh) but a good day nonetheless. We decided on Plotterskill since my friends has not been there before. We were hoping to see some waterfalls and hopefully not too much ice or mud.

Well, it was not what we thought – very very icy steep slopes to scale up and down, endless uphill snowy climbs, dangerous rivers crossings….so 7.5 miles later (and 5 1/2 hours) I was very relived to be in one piece.  In fact, when we exited the last part of the trail, there was a sign “Trail closed due to dangerous conditions.” Yikes.

these pics were taken early on… for most of the hike, we were trying to stay upright.

so happy to see that wire to hold on to…

But the weather was beautiful – warm and sunny.  An afternoon off from work to spend with friends was wonderful. And though at many points, I yelled “I can’t do this,” I did it!!

  • Thursday – I wanted to get in a run since I skipped yesterday but a busy work day meant that the best time to run would be before work.  But I dawdled with my coffee and had to squeeze it in my neighborhood during lunch. However, I thought it a good idea to check out the water line trail….Note to self: mud is just as slippery as ice. It was sunny and a little breezy but it hit 50 degrees so no complaints here.

gone are the gloves, beanie and tights…soon the vest came off. I think I could have worn a tank and skirt.

After work, I quickly stopped by to pick up my bib for Saturday’s race

and then I met a friend to walk. Since the clocks get turned ahead on Sunday, next week, our walks will return to the rail trail after work 🙂

a little rain and then this… a lucky sign, right?

  • Friday – My plan was to rest up for my race the next day. It was sunny but not as warm as Thursday and a little windy and so I used my lunch hour to take a walk in town.
  • Saturday – A race. As with my other Pandemic races, I approached this with a relaxed attitude.  Connect with others and enjoy the experience. It is hard not to want to be competitive. But I know this is not the time for that. Unfortunately the warmish temps we had in previous days did not continue.  It was freezing. To make mattes worse, it was WINDY.  Seeing friends and participating in a “live” race was worth the discomfort.  I can’t wait to run another.

I didn’t thaw out until mile 3 lol

I was going to run again on Sunday but it was forecast to be even windier and cloudy so I sucked it up and stopped on the way home to run 5 more miles (although there may be have been more walking than running.) My 10 mile LSD streak continues!

I added a jacket and had to stop to eat my post-race lunch halfway.

You would think that he ran 10 miles!!

  • Sunday – With my run out of the way, that left the day for biking and hiking! I left early since it supposed to get windier and either snow or rain.

Well, you know my obsession with waterfalls so I went back to High Fall Conservation Area. I had been there last spring.  Boy, was I surprised to find zero ice and snow…dry as a bone.  That gave me plenty of safe places to explore.

3 waterfalls and marked and unmarked trails all to myself 🙂

On the the way I stopped at an apple orchard.

I mean it was “PI” day, right?

Weekly Run Down for 2.22.21-2.28.21 – Warm Up and End of the Quarantine

So a warm up here means that it hit 40 degrees. LOL

Tuesday was my “immune birthday” (14 days past my 2nd vaccine). And Friday, my 10 day quarantine ended!!

Winter continues as the ground hog promised.  However, I still managed to get in daily walks and all my runs OUTSIDE!!

Last Week:

  • Monday – A very windy grey day.  With possible snow and sleet predicted later today and Tuesday, I debated running during lunch but with 25mph winds and blowing snow, NOPE.  The bike it was.

I planned to go out for a walk after work but it was still windy and snowing even harder.

the result of staying indoors – one sock finished (Champ is the photobomber)

  • Tuesday – Still cold and grey but the wind was not as bad as Monday and it was WARMER so I was able to squeeze in a run during lunch.

I chose a main road for a change…not exciting but a wide shoulder and some deer in view. Started to snow again lightly just as I finished.

Hooray! At 1:30 pm, I was 14 days post vaccine #2. Mentally, it felt so good!

  • Wednesday – Another busy work day so I was only able to run after work.  I drove to UAlbany for my usual boring loop. And it was over 40 degrees.  Woo Hoo! Capris time!

  • Thursday – I hate to run three days in a row so I was going to ride my bike instead during lunch. But the sun was out (which is rare around here) so I went for a walk at a local park (even though it was quite windy and back down to the 30s.)
  • Friday – Bored with my neighborhood runs, I decided to take a drive and run elsewhere during lunch. I hit one of the neighborhood roads in town parallel to the rail trail, And it was sunny. Win. Win.

people in my town paint rocks and hide them. If you find one (which I did today), you have to post on FB and then hide it.

And at 10:48 am, my QUARANTINE ended!!!!!!!!!! Woo Hoo!

  • Saturday – Finally a LONG RUN with friends. Nope. Rain and snow in the forecast postponed it.  Instead I was happily able to do a ZOOM bike ride with my blogger buds.

so fun chatting with everyone including those across the ocean.

The hubby and I decided to celebrate our vaccine status with dining indoors – first in more than a year!!

  • Sunday – Rescheduled LONG run.  Back at The Crossings (where we will be until the snow melts). I was thrilled to be joined by friends. I ran ALL 10 miles with one person or another. I felt like I was dragging the caboose but my feet hurt less than usual so life is good.

Rain was predicted for later but I waited and there was only a quick drizzle. So off I drove for another hike and waterfalls viewing at Christmas Preserve.

It was icy so definitely needed my spikes but so pretty and peaceful.

This Coming Week –

  • Monday –  run, walk
  • Tuesday – rest day, bike, hair appt, Sole Sisters ZOOM
  • Wednesday – run, walk with friends
  • Thursday – run, walk with friends
  • Friday – rest day, bike, walk
  • Saturday –  LONG RUN
  • Sunday – rest day, bike, walk/hike

Two Week Run Down: 2.8.21-2.21.21: I’m Baaack!!

Well, I left frigid, snowy Upstate New York for FOUR gloriously sunny warm days in Florida.

Sunshine is the best medicine

with no SNOW

I took lots of walks, saw sunrises on the ocean, explored the nearby sights, took boat rides, visited with my friends and ran a half marathon. I felt renewed (and even safe from COVID.)

Now this week, back to reality….

2.8.21-2.14.21:

  • Monday – #nevermissamonday. The temps dropped again and it was in the teens.  Still had to get it done and ran during lunch (in the ‘hood to save time).

Thanks to sunshine, Bernie and an awesome rock playlist, it wasn’t too painful

After work, I headed out to meet a friend for a walk.

Then I rushed home because my Mah Jongg group had a Book Club ZOOM.  We all read The Vanishing Half.  And I hadn’t seen them in forever. (They play online on Friday evenings. I am waiting until we can play in person again.)

I am liking wearing my glasses now instead of contacts.

  • Tuesday – One day of sunshine. That was it. I woke up to snow. I wondered if it would stop in time for me to run during lunch. Nope, it continued snowing all morning. I thought about skipping the run. But Wednesday and Thursday would be too busy to fit in a run so I just threw on my trail shoes and off I slid, I mean ran. And running in the fresh snow was actually fun.  Not even as slippery as I thought. As always, I was glad that I didn’t chicken out and stay inside.

I veered off onto the main road for a bit but kept getting hit with slush as cars passed me by (that’s was the worst)

However, the highlight of my day was that:

so relieved to have it over…

Later I met friends for a long walk before dinner.

  • Wednesday – I was nervous that I would get a reaction to my shot but all I felt was a slightly sore arm (even less sore than shot #1). Relieved, for sure.

No time for running but I did get in a bike ride during lunch.

  • Thursday – Early morning flight to Fort Lauderdale. I was shocked when I landed, the pilot said that it was 88 degrees. I rented a car and drove to my hotel in North Boca Raton. I quickly changed my clothes and headed off to meet two college friends for dinner in Deerfield Beach. We had great food and view of the ocean. It was so much fun catching up.

Barbara (in blue) was my college roommate and she winters in Fla. Patty was vacationing there for a few weeks. All three of us spent our junior year of college in France together.

  • Friday – I got up early to catch the sunrise. It was about a 10 minute drive and it was lovely but too cloudy to see the sun.

I decided to stay there to do my last run before my race (and to get acclimated to the Florida heat and humidity.) I was illegally parked so I split up my run.

I finished up on a trail outside my hotel.

It was really nice. I wished that I had more time…

Afterward, my friend Barbara picked me up and we spent several hours on the beach. Hot but heavenly.

I obviously packed a lot of activities into my day.  Again I had to rush back to my hotel to change and meet my friend Fonda (sister of a tennis friend) at Morikami Gardens. I had never been there even though I come to this area most winters.

so pretty and relaxing

Our next stop was my favorite bird sanctuary, Wakodahatchee. And it did not disappoint except for no alligators this time.

We ended the day with dinner at a restaurant with outdoor dining – shrimp tacos and key lime pie (my 2 Fla favorites).

  • Saturday – Another morning drive for an ocean sunrise. Again it was cloudy but still worth the drive.

This morning, I had plans to hang out with my friend, Michelle, whom I had taught French with many years ago.  We met at another Bird Sanctuary (Green Cay) and chatted away the time.

After our meet-up, I checked out of my hotel and headed south toward Fort Lauderdale. I decided to stop on the way in Pompano Beach and visit Hillsboro Lighthouse (by boat). They only offer tours once a month and today was the day.  I arrived at 11:30 and there was ONE seat left on the last tour boat – 3 pm. I took it but that meant I had to re-arrange my plans and check into my hotel after and go to the expo first to pick up my race stuff. It was held at a mall in a former Neiman Marcus store…well organized and lots of booths and samples.  The only thing I bought was another pair of Goodrs (cuz I don’t have that many lol) but I did a lot of food and drink sampling (all done safely with bars and cans/bottle etc)

Valentine’s Day theme shirt

Then I headed back to Pompano for my boat tour. It was awesome and of course, I climbed the 195 steps to the top of the light house. (I think it’s my 4th Florida Light House).

I still had time left on my parking meter so I decided to have dinner there at an outdoor restaurant overlooking the ocean and the pier.

I had shrimp and grits (another Fla favorite) instead of my usual pre-race pizza and then walked along the pier.

Finally, I arrived in Fort Lauderdale to check into my hotel. It was an early night, getting my #flatme ready and preparing to get up around 3 am.

ready or not

  • Sunday – Race Day.  The race started at 5:45 am (ouch) but they recommended that you arrive at 4:30 am.  When I got up, it was already 78 degrees with 95% humidity.  This made me a little nervous to say the least.  Not much I could do. Since I had gotten a discount on the race, I decided to purchase VIP (hotel) parking just to make things smoother. I got there probably too early but had lots of time to walk around (use the hotel restrooms) and chat with other runners. There was a staggered start and you wore a mask until you passed the start and then tossed it in the trash. Everything felt safe and was well organized. It was a pretty course with ocean views throughout (though I guess it was a lot nicer in previous years with more variety). It was VERY hard.  My feet hurt. It was really hot and humid but I finished. No regrets. You were given another mask when you crossed the finish line. I sat for a while, met more runners and finally headed into the ocean to cool off.

yes, I got my first sunrise without clouds around mile 4.

After a hot shower and change of clothes, I met friends for an airboat ride on the Everglades. (Glad it was a boat ride not a hike cuz my feet were not happy with me). We were disappointed not to see any alligators (too hot and sunny, I guess) but we still had loads of fun.

On the way home, we stopped for dinner at a Greek restaurant (We ate outside and the food was delish.)

Last Week:

  • Monday – Last day in Florida and I tried to make the most of it. My legs felt pretty good however I decided not to run but to instead explore a nearby nature preserve.

Afterward, I had reservations for a boat ride on the New River/Intercoastal.  It was a 1 1/2 hour narrated tour…so interesting to hear and see where the millionaires live and boat.

still hot and sunny and I was loving every minute of it

I had lunch along the water and then headed back to eventually check out of my hotel and return my car.  Unfortunately, my perfect vacation hit a snag.  My second flight that evening got cancelled. That meant that I would be stuck in Charlotte NC for the night and would have to fly home the next morning.  (This type of flight drama is something that I experience often.)

  • Tuesday – I had luckily taken the day off from work to recover from my vacation. Instead I had to still fly home.  It all worked out. It was cold, icy and dreary at home. I decided to stay in and do laundry. Starting my Quarantine. Not much of a problem since I work at home.  It just meant that my walks and runs would be solo until it’s over.
  • Wednesday – Back to work and back to squeezing a run in during lunch.

very cold and windy … my body was in shock

Sad to not be able to join anyone for a walk, I walked around my neighborhood before dinner.

  • Thursday – Another solo run during lunch

didn’t feel like “a glazed donut” but like a popsicle…it was cold and NO sun

And a lonely walk after work.

  • Friday – Snow. Snow. Glad it was a scheduled rest day. I renewed my relationship with George during lunch. I’m weaning myself off Peleton and watched TV instead.

I didn’t like it at first but now I’m hooked.

and got out for a snowy walk after work.  Snow is much prettier if it doesn’t impact your runs lol

  • Saturday – Being in Quarantine does have its advantages. I was able to join my Blogger friends for a ZOOM bike ride this morning instead of doing my usual Saturday long run with friends.

I took a drive in the afternoon in search of waterfalls. And I did find two.

Buttermilk Falls (top) and Cohoes Falls (bottom)

  • Sunday – A sunnier and less windy day so I postponed my run until today. Running alone is not much fun but I did get it done. (Funny thing was that the temp was 21 degrees and the date 2/21/21 but no, I didn’t even consider running 21 miles but 2.1 did enter my mind lol.)

The sun helped but still hard. I may have shed a few tears as Becs crossed the finish line. I also listened to a podcast as well to pass the time.

Too nice a day to stay indoors so I decided to explore some new trails.

Grafton State Park – 25 miles of trails – need to come back here!

This Coming Week –

  • Monday –  run, walk
  • Tuesday – rest day, bike, walk with friends
  • Wednesday – run, walk with BFF
  • Thursday – run, walk with friends
  • Friday – rest day, bike, walk
  • Saturday –  LONG RUN
  • Sunday – rest day, bike, walk/hike

Weekly Run Down for 2.1.21-.2.7.21: Hello February!

New Month. And lots to be grateful for.

I get my 2nd COVID vaccine this coming week.

I have a vacation in a warmer climate planned for this month.

I will be running an in-person race.

My family and friends are all healthy.

The days are getting longer.

Spring starts next month.

Goodbye January Hello February Quote For Facebook

Last Week –

  • Monday – The snowstorm was predicted to start in the afternoon. So boy was I surprised to wait up to snow on the ground already and it was snowing.  #nevermissamonday! What to do?  I knew things would be getting worse before they got better so I waited for the snow plow/salt truck to go by and then went for a run. The worst part was going down my driveway and no shoulder on the side of the main road.

it was one of my more enjoyable runs…Lady Gaga…snowflakes on my nose & eyelashes.. and no pressure to run fast or not walk

By lunchtime, there seemed to be a lull in the snow so I drove to the local park hoping the hit the trails.  Well, I was too lazy to put on my yaks and grab my poles and getting to the trails was too icy so I just took a walk around the park.

not tempted in the least bit to work out on that equipment

After work, I was better prepared and go in a decent hike. Nope…snowing too hard. Hunkered down at home and read a book (The Vanishing Half = good one!).

  • Tuesday – Ok, I woke up to too much snow for a morning anything outdoors.

Glad I didn’t have to shovel

It continued to snow all morning so my only option was the bike at lunch. (George to the rescue.) I set up a TV so I could use it for the Peleton app instead of my ipad or iphone.

30 minutes of pedaling to Prince

Then I shoveled out my hot tub (priorities) and checked out the roads in the ‘hood.

I had boots on or I would have run…the roads were pretty clear

After work, I was determined to get outside again. Not to run but for a long walk with friends.

  • Wednesday – No more snow but still a cold day with a lot more wind. I drove into town for a run at lunch. On my way, I ate three homemade cookies. I’m telling you this because I had more energy than normal…

New York State of mind today (hat & Jacket). Matty & I seem to have the same music tastes. So much energy that I actually did FIVE hill repeats (I never do drills!!)

I also met my BFF for a long walk before dinner.

  • Thursday – A beautiful morning. There was even sun but not much time to do much out there before work.

just outside my front door

I did go for another lunch run in town (but on different streets) and again with Matty (on Peleton).

nicest weather we’ve had in a long time. Just needed a windbreaker! Woo Hoo!

And then back to the outside mall after work for a long walk with friends.

  • Friday – Rest day.  A Bike ride at lunch. An easy decision since the weather was supposed to be nasty (but of course then it wasn’t).

a fun 45 minute break from the computer

And a trail walk at Fiver Rivers after work.

I found a path where a lot of skiers and snowshoers had packed up the snow so I was able to walk it wit just hiking boots

  • SaturdayLong Run Saturday. Finally temps near 30. (For us it is a winter heat wave). I met Sherry for 10 miles at The Crossings. I ran 3 solo and then 7 with her and my friend Stan (who showed up by surprise.) It was cold but sunny and so much less windy and cold than the previous Saturday. Last long run before my race!!

Stan is a much faster runner and he definitely pushed us. After 7 with them, I walked and left them to run another mile (at his pace.)

  • Sunday – Started the day on George. Substituted Peleton for Netflix
Image result for firefly lane

binge watched this and had to watch episode 10 of Season 1. Anyone watch this or have read the book?

Lots of snow on the trails but difficult to decide where to hike without snowshoes or X-country skis. Sherry lent me her micro-spikes and I was excited to try them out. I was afraid that the snow would not stop and I would have to postpone my hike. But around 2:30 pm, it did and I decided to explore Plotterkill Preserve.

The snow was packed so I didn’t need my spikes until I got to the bridge (the stairs were pure ice).. It was such a nice hike and it started snowing near the end. Perfect. Next time, I’ll have to go earlier so I could do all the trails. (and there was a waterfall (top right)

This Coming Week –

  • Monday –  run, walk, ZOOM book club (The Vanishing Half)
  • Tuesday – run, COVID vaccine #2, walk with friends
  • Wednesday – rest day, bike, walk, pack
  • Thursday – flt to Fort Lauderdale, drive to N. Boca, dinner in Deerfield Beach with friends
  • Fridayrun (at sunrise), gardens and bird sanctuaries with a friend
  • Saturday –  rest day, sunrise walk, brunch with a friend, drive to FL, boat tour to lighthouse, race expo
  • Sunday – Race Day – Publix A1A Fort Lauderdale Half Marathon, explore Fort Lauderdale, boat ride on the New River
