As I mentioned last week, we are now expected to work in the office at least three days a week. I am not a happy camper….
But due to a day off, I only worked in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday.
It was very strange and really impacted my running and other stuff but it is what is is.
Last Week:
- Monday – I had taken the day off so I could participate in the Lake George Hike-a-thon. Since my hubby does not enjoy hiking and had to work, my friend subbed in.
I registered early and chose one of my favorite trails – The Pinnacle.
There were 22 sites and over 700 participants. Our hike started at 10 am and it was just a mile to the top. Then we had to wait until 11:19 for a helicopter to fly over and take our photo.
There was a reception afterward and then we into town, got lunch and my hubby took us out on the boat.
We got so lucky – it was the most perfect weather of the summer.
- Tuesday – My first day back at the office. It was hard to remember how to dress and what to do in the morning to get ready.
Again this week, weather was an issue. With the threat of rain/thunderstorms, I was hoping that I could motivate myself to get up very early and run…NOPE!!
I did go for a HOT HUMID BUGGY walk at lunch (since my mid-day runs could no longer occur) and then it rained most of the afternoon.
I planned to meet my friends for our usual Tuesday after work walk on the rail trail but they decided to bail due to the threat of thunderstorms.
I decided to risk it and go on my own. It never rained and the sun even came out. Unfortunately, the earlier rain did nothing to lower the humidity. But I actually felt too energetic to walk and so I ran.

I was overdressed for running since I planned to walk… and that cat followed me for about 1/4 mile. If a black cat brings bad luck, des a white one bring good luck?
Today’s Nugget (from Ali on the Run podcast interview with Sarah Lesko from Oiselle): “I have my own running goals but the most important goal is to support other people.” Some days I have felt that way with my friends.
Wednesday – SOAR run or Ice Cream run??? Tough decision. With thunderstorms in the forecast, I DID get up for a short run.
Yesterday I felt so lethargic at work and after I went for a run in the evening, I felt so much better. So I decided to run before work to see if it gave me more energy at work.

I didn’t getup as early as I should have and it was already warm and humid but I realized that I need to do this more often.
Today’s Nugget (from Ali on the Run podcast interview with Sarah Lesko from Oiselle cont.): “The moment the negative stuff is taking up too much head space, it’s time to make a change.” Yup with running and life.
Again I walked at lunch. I avoided the buggy nature path and just walked around the outdoor mall.
And after work, I decided on the Ice Cream run. Not for the ice cream but for the location. The SOAR run was going to be at the Crossings where I will be running on Mondays so I’d rather go someplace different. In this case – Five Rivers Environmental Center.
As happened on Tuesday, there were afternoon rain/thunderstorms. They stopped but there still was a threat of rain. As a result, only 4 of us braved the weather for this run…actually a trail run. Although the skies were dark and there was thunder in the distance, we managed to stay dry. The downside was that the other runners run trails fast. As I attempted to keep up, I wound up falling. Nothing serious other than some bruises, a cut on the ankle and mud on me everywhere. The scariest part was that when I fell, my phone fell out of my pocket. I had to go back and I did find it!!! Phew. Remind me never to enter a trail race…
We did get ice cream after and the skies opened up as we were eating it. Perfect timing!!
- Thursday – Back working from home today …so happy. Unfortunately the weather Gods were mad at me. It rained all morning on and off. I wanted to run during an early lunch….if it weren’t for the RAIN.
Finally I decided to get in my car and go for it (since there was a possibility that the evening run would be canceled.) It was only drizzling when I started but then it started to pour.
Yes, I got wet but I didn’t melt.
Today’s Nugget (from Ali on the Run podcast interview with Sarah Lesko from Oiselle cont.): “A third of my weekly running miles are walking. And my running is getting better and faster. I count them both the same. The only downside is that walking takes longer.” Hmmm. I do not count my walking miles. Maybe I should?
And my favorite run of the week was tonight’s evening group trail run. The location was Peebles Island.
I went last week and got rained on. So I had no excuse not to go tonight. So off I went hoping that some of my friends would be there to share the misery fun. Well, it rained before and after but not a drop during. Got lucky again!
- Friday – Finally scheduled rest day. The forecast AGAIN was for rain. Still at lunchtime, it hadn’t started yet. So I headed to a nearby trail for a walk.
- Saturday – Back to a long run with my peeps. It was great to have company for part of my 8 miles on the Nisky Bike Path. The temps were not really warm but boy was it humid.
Afterward we all gathered for brunch. I am so lucky to be part of this group.
Recovery was getting my nails done, doing grocery shopping, laundry and weeding. I think my recovery activities were more tiring than the run lol
- Sunday – Boating or hiking or both or neither? All weather dependent but most likely since my hubby has an AM tennis match, I will go hiking early and see if the rain stays away for the afternoon.
And I was correct, I did decide on hiking and spent a lovely day on the trails and beyond before the rain came.
First I hiked to the gazebo at Pilot Knob (on the opposite side of Lake George from Mondays hike). Then I continued to the waterfall (which I had visited last fall but at that time, there was no water.) I was glad to have gone early because it was very crowded when I was done.
Since I had driven over an hour, I decided to stay for awhile. I did a short walk around Edgecomb Pond and then headed to Bolton Landing (where we keep our boat.) No boating today but I walked around town admiring all the flowers
especially the waterlilies at the Sagamore Hotel.
Eventually it did rain but not until I was almost home.

Happy Running! How is your running going? Any in-person races planned? Have you been experiencing summer temps where you live? Any vacations planned? Please share.
Sorry about the fall – trails are hard! I do bits off-road now and again but I’m glad I trained for and did my trail ultra and never have to do that again!

Trails are hard. You won’t see me entering any trail races.

Sounds like a good week, except for the fall. Glad you weren’t hurt worse. Your Friday walking trail sure was muddy! We were needing rain and finally got some last night. Supposed to rain here again this afternoon.
As for summer weather, yesterday’s humidity was awful for my long run. But, I managed, slowly.

I agree. My runs certainly slow down in the summer.

that hike a thon sounds really fun! I am sure going back to work was hard after all this time. the ice cream run sounds like a good choice to me!

it is rough being back at work but I have no choice.
I hope that I can do that hike-a-thon again next year. it was fun.
Ice cream is always a good idea…

I love Lesko!!! Now I remember someone else mentioning that podcast. I will listen to it. Thanks for the reminder. Nice on going back to the office. Soon it will get easier and you will have your routine.

It’ll get easier. But now I know how much better it is working from home.

I totally agree! I remember coming home at 8am, showering/getting ready, making breakfast, and having to log in at 8:30 for my students. 🙂

It’s interesting to hear about all the adjustments people are going through in getting back to their respective offices/places of work. I only had a 2-week work-from-home ordeal, so I was lucky in that my routine never really changed during the pandemic. It’s weird coming to work, now, and seeing the parking lot so full! For so long it was just the few of us on the “skeleton crew” LOL

Yes many of us are adjusting…not happy about it. But they didn’t ask me if I was more productive at home. I was !!

Glad you were able to get in your runs during your first week back! At least you could ease back in with 2 office days before starting your 3 day a week schedule. It really does annoy me now how much time it takes to get ready and commute to the office, and I think about how much time I can save by working from home. Sorry about your fall! Glad you are ok and found your phone.

You get it. So much wasted time that I could use for many things.
Thanks. I was more worried about my phone than myself. Both were ok.

Trail running is a different animal and still intimidates me quite a bit! Glad you weren’t hurt too badly and that you quickly found your phone!

I love trails but running slowing and walking is better for me. That way I can enjoy and not get hurt.

Sounds like your first few days back in the office went well. I imagine it will take some time to get back in the ‘morning routine’ for sure.
I’m glad that the fall on the trails wasn’t too serious. That’s my biggest fear about running trails and why I’ve only done one trail race!

I am so much more efficient at home so there’s that. My work conditions are not right now conducive to working.
Same here. I was lucky to fall in the mud but I could have broken something…no to trail racing.

Those flowers are lovely.
I would’ve thought the fact that you didn’t really hurt yourself in the fall would take some of the fear out of falling.
We’ve been relatively lucky with our hikes — again how the summit to ourselves quite some time.

Definitely not afraid but at our age, falling can mean broken bones. Not worth it just to run. Walking is fun too.
The very popular hikes are crowded even early but you can pick ones that aren’t. This hike has a great view and a waterfall so not surprised.

We’ve been pretty lucky so far. Also lucky getting parking, but I had several other options picked out. Since this one was closest to home, turned out to be a good thing since we ended up having to go home.

I’ve done that one on a day trip.
Definitely the right decision. I doubt you could have enjoyed hiking while your mom was in the hospital. There will be other vacations I’m sure.

Well, she was in the hospital when we did the hike & I was FaceTiming with the doctor & my sister on the way back down. Unfortunately I think i came home a day to early. Some minor complications delayed her transfer to rehab yesterday.

Hope she is now in rehab and starting her recovery… you are very lucky to not live across the country and also not have to stay in a hotel when you visit.

Yeah my brother not so lucky because he is across the country & yes he’s here. I will be going back & forth many times though. This is why I was sad for my sister not moving to FL but happy she’s here so we have somewhere to stay.
She’s supposed to be transferred this afternoon.

I’m glad you’re ok after that fall and hooray for finding your phone. My husband is heading back to his office a few days a week as well. While he enjoys it, many of his employees do not. One of the the positive things about the pandemic is it’s shown us that we CAN be successful while we are flexible about work.

I am definitely more successful at home. I wish the bosses would understand that.
Yes I am clumsy…need not to run fast on a trail lol

Sorry about the fall! But don’t let that turn you off of trail racing!!! Just keep your eyes to the ground.
I’m off for the next 3 weeks-this week because of my injuries and the next 2 weeks were planned vacation. If I had a desk job, I’d be at work right now. But I’m on my feet all day, so nope. I hope you adjust to being back in the office!

I have no choice but to adjust. Unfortunately.
Thinking of you. Hope you heal quickly.

Bummer about returning to the office – I bet it will take a little getting used to.
I love the idea of a hike-a-thon!

All your flowers are so gorgeous!
I can’t imagine how weird it must be to be back in the office. I know it’s odd just doing normal things in general, so this must take it up several notches.
We do have two vacations planned for this summer – just a few days here and there which is pretty exciting. I am looking forward to some new places.

That’s great that you have vacations planned. I have a short one in the Hampton’s.
And yes going back to the office is weird and not welcome.

Oh,those flowers! Sounds liek a good week, despite having to go to the office. I enjoyed that Ali On The Run Podcast, and noticed how she “cpunts” walking. I started keeping track of my Scooby walks in January, but then stopped. I just don’t remember to start my Garmin and it’s a pain to add manually. 😛 Still, it is time on your feet that “counts”.

Same here. I never know how far I walk. But I think walking often does help your speed and endurance.
With all the rain the flowers are particularly pretty this summer.

So so true. I’d much rather run with someone at their pace than worry about my own. Even if I can’t do their mileage, I love joining for some of it. Planning to do same with Elizabeth againt his summer.

Same. I always have more fun helping others achieve their running goals than my own.
I mean I don’t get paid so who cares what my pace is on a run. That being said, there are runners who run alone and seriously check their pace which is perfectly fine.
