Two Week Run Down: 2.8.21-2.21.21: I’m Baaack!!

Well, I left frigid, snowy Upstate New York for FOUR gloriously sunny warm days in Florida.

Sunshine is the best medicine

with no SNOW

I took lots of walks, saw sunrises on the ocean, explored the nearby sights, took boat rides, visited with my friends and ran a half marathon. I felt renewed (and even safe from COVID.)

Now this week, back to reality….

2.8.21-2.14.21:

  • Monday – #nevermissamonday. The temps dropped again and it was in the teens.  Still had to get it done and ran during lunch (in the ‘hood to save time).

Thanks to sunshine, Bernie and an awesome rock playlist, it wasn’t too painful

After work, I headed out to meet a friend for a walk.

Then I rushed home because my Mah Jongg group had a Book Club ZOOM.  We all read The Vanishing Half.  And I hadn’t seen them in forever. (They play online on Friday evenings. I am waiting until we can play in person again.)

I am liking wearing my glasses now instead of contacts.

  • Tuesday – One day of sunshine. That was it. I woke up to snow. I wondered if it would stop in time for me to run during lunch. Nope, it continued snowing all morning. I thought about skipping the run. But Wednesday and Thursday would be too busy to fit in a run so I just threw on my trail shoes and off I slid, I mean ran. And running in the fresh snow was actually fun.  Not even as slippery as I thought. As always, I was glad that I didn’t chicken out and stay inside.

I veered off onto the main road for a bit but kept getting hit with slush as cars passed me by (that’s was the worst)

However, the highlight of my day was that:

so relieved to have it over…

Later I met friends for a long walk before dinner.

  • Wednesday – I was nervous that I would get a reaction to my shot but all I felt was a slightly sore arm (even less sore than shot #1). Relieved, for sure.

No time for running but I did get in a bike ride during lunch.

  • Thursday – Early morning flight to Fort Lauderdale. I was shocked when I landed, the pilot said that it was 88 degrees. I rented a car and drove to my hotel in North Boca Raton. I quickly changed my clothes and headed off to meet two college friends for dinner in Deerfield Beach. We had great food and view of the ocean. It was so much fun catching up.

Barbara (in blue) was my college roommate and she winters in Fla. Patty was vacationing there for a few weeks. All three of us spent our junior year of college in France together.

  • Friday – I got up early to catch the sunrise. It was about a 10 minute drive and it was lovely but too cloudy to see the sun.

I decided to stay there to do my last run before my race (and to get acclimated to the Florida heat and humidity.) I was illegally parked so I split up my run.

I finished up on a trail outside my hotel.

It was really nice. I wished that I had more time…

Afterward, my friend Barbara picked me up and we spent several hours on the beach. Hot but heavenly.

I obviously packed a lot of activities into my day.  Again I had to rush back to my hotel to change and meet my friend Fonda (sister of a tennis friend) at Morikami Gardens. I had never been there even though I come to this area most winters.

so pretty and relaxing

Our next stop was my favorite bird sanctuary, Wakodahatchee. And it did not disappoint except for no alligators this time.

We ended the day with dinner at a restaurant with outdoor dining – shrimp tacos and key lime pie (my 2 Fla favorites).

  • Saturday – Another morning drive for an ocean sunrise. Again it was cloudy but still worth the drive.

This morning, I had plans to hang out with my friend, Michelle, whom I had taught French with many years ago.  We met at another Bird Sanctuary (Green Cay) and chatted away the time.

After our meet-up, I checked out of my hotel and headed south toward Fort Lauderdale. I decided to stop on the way in Pompano Beach and visit Hillsboro Lighthouse (by boat). They only offer tours once a month and today was the day.  I arrived at 11:30 and there was ONE seat left on the last tour boat – 3 pm. I took it but that meant I had to re-arrange my plans and check into my hotel after and go to the expo first to pick up my race stuff. It was held at a mall in a former Neiman Marcus store…well organized and lots of booths and samples.  The only thing I bought was another pair of Goodrs (cuz I don’t have that many lol) but I did a lot of food and drink sampling (all done safely with bars and cans/bottle etc)

Valentine’s Day theme shirt

Then I headed back to Pompano for my boat tour. It was awesome and of course, I climbed the 195 steps to the top of the light house. (I think it’s my 4th Florida Light House).

I still had time left on my parking meter so I decided to have dinner there at an outdoor restaurant overlooking the ocean and the pier.

I had shrimp and grits (another Fla favorite) instead of my usual pre-race pizza and then walked along the pier.

Finally, I arrived in Fort Lauderdale to check into my hotel. It was an early night, getting my #flatme ready and preparing to get up around 3 am.

ready or not

  • Sunday – Race Day.  The race started at 5:45 am (ouch) but they recommended that you arrive at 4:30 am.  When I got up, it was already 78 degrees with 95% humidity.  This made me a little nervous to say the least.  Not much I could do. Since I had gotten a discount on the race, I decided to purchase VIP (hotel) parking just to make things smoother. I got there probably too early but had lots of time to walk around (use the hotel restrooms) and chat with other runners. There was a staggered start and you wore a mask until you passed the start and then tossed it in the trash. Everything felt safe and was well organized. It was a pretty course with ocean views throughout (though I guess it was a lot nicer in previous years with more variety). It was VERY hard.  My feet hurt. It was really hot and humid but I finished. No regrets. You were given another mask when you crossed the finish line. I sat for a while, met more runners and finally headed into the ocean to cool off.

yes, I got my first sunrise without clouds around mile 4.

After a hot shower and change of clothes, I met friends for an airboat ride on the Everglades. (Glad it was a boat ride not a hike cuz my feet were not happy with me). We were disappointed not to see any alligators (too hot and sunny, I guess) but we still had loads of fun.

On the way home, we stopped for dinner at a Greek restaurant (We ate outside and the food was delish.)

Last Week:

  • Monday – Last day in Florida and I tried to make the most of it. My legs felt pretty good however I decided not to run but to instead explore a nearby nature preserve.

Afterward, I had reservations for a boat ride on the New River/Intercoastal.  It was a 1 1/2 hour narrated tour…so interesting to hear and see where the millionaires live and boat.

still hot and sunny and I was loving every minute of it

I had lunch along the water and then headed back to eventually check out of my hotel and return my car.  Unfortunately, my perfect vacation hit a snag.  My second flight that evening got cancelled. That meant that I would be stuck in Charlotte NC for the night and would have to fly home the next morning.  (This type of flight drama is something that I experience often.)

  • Tuesday – I had luckily taken the day off from work to recover from my vacation. Instead I had to still fly home.  It all worked out. It was cold, icy and dreary at home. I decided to stay in and do laundry. Starting my Quarantine. Not much of a problem since I work at home.  It just meant that my walks and runs would be solo until it’s over.
  • Wednesday – Back to work and back to squeezing a run in during lunch.

very cold and windy … my body was in shock

Sad to not be able to join anyone for a walk, I walked around my neighborhood before dinner.

  • Thursday – Another solo run during lunch

didn’t feel like “a glazed donut” but like a popsicle…it was cold and NO sun

And a lonely walk after work.

  • Friday – Snow. Snow. Glad it was a scheduled rest day. I renewed my relationship with George during lunch. I’m weaning myself off Peleton and watched TV instead.
Image result for bridgerton

I didn’t like it at first but now I’m hooked.

and got out for a snowy walk after work.  Snow is much prettier if it doesn’t impact your runs lol

  • Saturday – Being in Quarantine does have its advantages. I was able to join my Blogger friends for a ZOOM bike ride this morning instead of doing my usual Saturday long run with friends.

I took a drive in the afternoon in search of waterfalls. And I did find two.

Buttermilk Falls (top) and Cohoes Falls (bottom)

  • Sunday – A sunnier and less windy day so I postponed my run until today. Running alone is not much fun but I did get it done. (Funny thing was that the temp was 21 degrees and the date 2/21/21 but no, I didn’t even consider running 21 miles but 2.1 did enter my mind lol.)

The sun helped but still hard. I may have shed a few tears as Becs crossed the finish line. I also listened to a podcast as well to pass the time.

Too nice a day to stay indoors so I decided to explore some new trails.

Grafton State Park – 25 miles of trails – need to come back here!

This Coming Week –

  • Monday –  run, walk
  • Tuesday – rest day, bike, walk with friends
  • Wednesday – run, walk with BFF
  • Thursday – run, walk with friends
  • Friday – rest day, bike, walk
  • Saturday –  LONG RUN
  • Sunday – rest day, bike, walk/hike

Weekly Run Down for 2.1.21-.2.7.21: Hello February!

New Month. And lots to be grateful for.

I get my 2nd COVID vaccine this coming week.

I have a vacation in a warmer climate planned for this month.

I will be running an in-person race.

My family and friends are all healthy.

The days are getting longer.

Spring starts next month.

Goodbye January Hello February Quote For Facebook

Last Week –

  • Monday – The snowstorm was predicted to start in the afternoon. So boy was I surprised to wait up to snow on the ground already and it was snowing.  #nevermissamonday! What to do?  I knew things would be getting worse before they got better so I waited for the snow plow/salt truck to go by and then went for a run. The worst part was going down my driveway and no shoulder on the side of the main road.

it was one of my more enjoyable runs…Lady Gaga…snowflakes on my nose & eyelashes.. and no pressure to run fast or not walk

By lunchtime, there seemed to be a lull in the snow so I drove to the local park hoping the hit the trails.  Well, I was too lazy to put on my yaks and grab my poles and getting to the trails was too icy so I just took a walk around the park.

not tempted in the least bit to work out on that equipment

After work, I was better prepared and go in a decent hike. Nope…snowing too hard. Hunkered down at home and read a book (The Vanishing Half = good one!).

  • Tuesday – Ok, I woke up to too much snow for a morning anything outdoors.

Glad I didn’t have to shovel

It continued to snow all morning so my only option was the bike at lunch. (George to the rescue.) I set up a TV so I could use it for the Peleton app instead of my ipad or iphone.

30 minutes of pedaling to Prince

Then I shoveled out my hot tub (priorities) and checked out the roads in the ‘hood.

I had boots on or I would have run…the roads were pretty clear

After work, I was determined to get outside again. Not to run but for a long walk with friends.

  • Wednesday – No more snow but still a cold day with a lot more wind. I drove into town for a run at lunch. On my way, I ate three homemade cookies. I’m telling you this because I had more energy than normal…

New York State of mind today (hat & Jacket). Matty & I seem to have the same music tastes. So much energy that I actually did FIVE hill repeats (I never do drills!!)

I also met my BFF for a long walk before dinner.

  • Thursday – A beautiful morning. There was even sun but not much time to do much out there before work.

just outside my front door

I did go for another lunch run in town (but on different streets) and again with Matty (on Peleton).

nicest weather we’ve had in a long time. Just needed a windbreaker! Woo Hoo!

And then back to the outside mall after work for a long walk with friends.

  • Friday – Rest day.  A Bike ride at lunch. An easy decision since the weather was supposed to be nasty (but of course then it wasn’t).

a fun 45 minute break from the computer

And a trail walk at Fiver Rivers after work.

I found a path where a lot of skiers and snowshoers had packed up the snow so I was able to walk it wit just hiking boots

  • SaturdayLong Run Saturday. Finally temps near 30. (For us it is a winter heat wave). I met Sherry for 10 miles at The Crossings. I ran 3 solo and then 7 with her and my friend Stan (who showed up by surprise.) It was cold but sunny and so much less windy and cold than the previous Saturday. Last long run before my race!!

Stan is a much faster runner and he definitely pushed us. After 7 with them, I walked and left them to run another mile (at his pace.)

  • Sunday – Started the day on George. Substituted Peleton for Netflix
Image result for firefly lane

binge watched this and had to watch episode 10 of Season 1. Anyone watch this or have read the book?

Lots of snow on the trails but difficult to decide where to hike without snowshoes or X-country skis. Sherry lent me her micro-spikes and I was excited to try them out. I was afraid that the snow would not stop and I would have to postpone my hike. But around 2:30 pm, it did and I decided to explore Plotterkill Preserve.

The snow was packed so I didn’t need my spikes until I got to the bridge (the stairs were pure ice).. It was such a nice hike and it started snowing near the end. Perfect. Next time, I’ll have to go earlier so I could do all the trails. (and there was a waterfall (top right)

This Coming Week –

  • Monday –  run, walk, ZOOM book club (The Vanishing Half)
  • Tuesday – run, COVID vaccine #2, walk with friends
  • Wednesday – rest day, bike, walk, pack
  • Thursday – flt to Fort Lauderdale, drive to N. Boca, dinner in Deerfield Beach with friends
  • Fridayrun (at sunrise), gardens and bird sanctuaries with a friend
  • Saturday –  rest day, sunrise walk, brunch with a friend, drive to FL, boat tour to lighthouse, race expo
  • Sunday – Race Day – Publix A1A Fort Lauderdale Half Marathon, explore Fort Lauderdale, boat ride on the New River

Weekly Run Down for 1.25.21-1.31.21: Wrapping Up the First Month of 2021

Well, January has ended.  We have a new President. Many people have gotten their first COVID vaccine. My hubby has even received his 2nd dose (No reaction!!)

My running has gotten off to a decent start. I’m on my way (barring injury) to 1000 miles for the year.

Despite the cold, snow and ice, I’ve continued hiking. I have already visited FOUR new trails.  To quote Wendy “Nature is my anti-depressant.”

Last Week –

  • Monday – Another cold morning but with possible snow on the way tomorrow, I knew I needed to get in a run at lunch. The sun was a welcome surprise, the wind not so much. I decided to repeat the route from last week – drive to park n ride, run to the HS track, run around the track and then run back to my car.

Thanks to Cari for the recommendation – my favorite Peleton run yet.

And after work, I checked out a local trail before it got dark. A perfect way to end the day.

HollyHock Hollow Sanctuary. If you look closely you can see the mon in the pic on the right

Also I got my swag for Saturday’s Virtual 15K.  I wish I was running the real race but even without the pandemic, none are scheduled anymore in NY.

a hoodie, chocolate and more…

  • Tuesday – A busy work day but I did get in a 45 min bike ride during lunch.

it started to snow just as I was finishing up

After work, I had a needed hair appt (2 weeks later than usual.) And I drove to it in a snowstorm (The things we women do…)

  • Wednesday – I woke up to snow (about 5-6 inches.)

first world problems – have to shovel out the hot tub

so I waited until lunch to go out for a run. I wore my trail shoes and navigated slowly the streets in my neighborhood. No problem (except for my driveway which wasn’t plowed yet.)

half of the run was done to Wicked music 🙂

After work, I met my friend for our usual outside walk.

  • Thursday – Today I took the day off. (Just needing to use up some vacation time).  I was able to do grocery shopping, get my nails done and go for a morning run. I ran in the streets of town since obviously the trails were still snow-covered.

the sun may have been shining but the wind made it feel sooo cold

and then an afternoon hike. You know that I am obsessed with water falls so I chose Barbersville Falls. There was quite a few inches of snow on the Waterfalls trail.  Underneath the snow was ice.  Going down wasn’t as scary as trying to go back up (Next time, do not do this without spikes!!) Eek!  Then I hiked the Ridge Trail. Much longer loop as not as scary.

The waterfalls were beautiful and the trails so peaceful… but slippery

I ended the day with a walk with friends.

  • Friday – Rest day from running. I almost considered going for a walk.

Nahh. I’m not that crazy. Maybe one in a mall after work.

Instead I took a 45 minute bike ride at lunch.

30 min of Backstreet Boys but only had time for 15 min of Cher. Enjoyed both.

  • SaturdayLong Run Saturday. I had planned to do my virtual Hot Chocolate 15k with Sherry and virtually with Deirdre and Kim. But first, 2.7 miles (because I never got in 12 miles last Saturday.) It was extremely cold again but not as windy as last time. And there was sun!! I started at 10 am and Sherry met me at 10:30. We had to return to the Crossings due to our recent snowfall and ran around the nearby neighborhoods. It was sub zero with the wind chill but not as bad as I thought and it was nice to have company.

Virtual 15k done! (Deidre was in Fla.)

I guess my painful feet are ready for another half marathon.

After my hot chocolate in the hot tub, I spent some time on my knitting. Just too cold to venture outside again.

I got tired of the socks so started a cowl. It is actually a darker purple.

  • Sunday – Another COLD day. I started with a 40 min. ride on George.

actually did the warm up after the ride lol

And then off to the trails in search of peace and quiet and a waterfall. Sanders Preserve surprisingly was one of my favorite trails so far. Miles of trails on packed snow, not slippery at all and so peaceful.  There was a waterfall but I couldn’t figure out how to get down to it.  I am going back!

without any wind, it felt so much better than yesterday – a beautiful day on the trails

I’m amazed at how much my succulents are loving winter. This is the first winter of my obsession. I love plants but once I bought one succulent, I got addicted (and none have died 🙂 )

check out all the icicles outside the window!

Weekly Run Down for 1.18.21-1.24.18: A Week of Celebration

The week started off with a day off to celebrate Martin Luther King Day

❤ this! I remember him saying it but it didn’t mean as much to me then as it does now.

and then in the the middle of the week, we celebrated a new US President being inaugurated.

What Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman Wore to the Biden-Harris Presidential Inauguration

this was even more exciting!

Hope this means good things for all of us.

A four-day work week is always a good thing.

And I also got my first dose of the COVID vaccine. Another reason to celebrate.

Last Week –

  • Monday – Woo Hoo, a day off from work.  I started it with my longest and best Peleton ride.

45 minutes of Billy!!! No callouts, just some stories but mostly music!!

In the afternoon, I was able to take a long hike on this rest day from running.  I continued my quest for easy trails in the winter but ones with waterfalls. I have to say that I am still rather nervous about hiking where there is ice and snow.  But there’s no way around it sometimes (unless I just stay home). So I wore my Yaks, used my poles and walked very slowly.  And I didn’t fall!! Woot! Woot!

it was very icy but going by myself, I could set my own pace and I enjoyed the beautiful views.

  • Tuesday – Back to work and back to running. The temps dropped and it was still cloudy. Not happy about that but I did squeeze in a run before my appointment to get my first COVID vaccine.

and it takes me a lot longer than 30 minutes to run 3 miles these days

The vaccine took no time at all. It was so well organized. I was in and out.  I got the Pfizer vaccine so my second dose was scheduled for 21 days from today.

I felt fine so I went for a walk with a friend that evening (The arm was just a little sore.)

  • Wednesday – A rest day so on the bike before work. I got a late start so instead of a Peleton ride, I did work while on the bike. Then I took a short walk during a late lunch (after watching the Inauguration <3). And believe it or not, it was the first day that there was any sun in eons!!! Then all of a sudden, there was a snow squall and I looked like a snowman.  Just as quickly as it started, it ended and it was sunny again.

lots of flags for Inauguration Day and a mobile Pet Spa at a neighbor’s?

and I met my BFF for a longer walk after work.

In the evening, we had a running group ZOOM.  We have some snowbirds in the group and some not being able to do the weekend long runs.  It was great seeing everyone all together.

Judy was also here for a little while earlier

  • Thursday – A busy work day so I had to run after work at Ualbany and then meet my friends for a walk. Both were cold ones.  Brrr!

But first, all the bloggers celebrated Liz’s birthday.

thanks to Cari for the collage

It snowed during the morning and I was worried about the paths at UAlbany being slippery. Happy to report that they were all clear and salted.

loving the extra minutes of daylight

Afterward, I went to meet a friend for a walk.  She told me I looked like Bernie.

she may have been right lol

  • Friday – Rest Day #3 was scheduled. Appropriately since I woke up feeling like crap. Headache, achy, tired.  Not sure if it was a delayed reaction from the COVID vaccine (my friend had a bad one on day 8) or from lack of sleep and stress at work.  A normal person would just rest. Instead I did a Peleton ride (live) during my late lunch. (You know my philosophy – You rest when you die.)

OMG. I forgot how much I loved this musical and it ended with my favorite song.

I was not cured but mentally I felt better and physically no worse.

And then after work, I finally dragged myself outside for a walk with friends. Continuing on my goal to go for a walk outdoors everyday.  Someday, there may even be sunshine. Believe it or not, my headache went away. I felt energized and like a new woman.  The first step out the door is the hardest.  Glad I didn’t just give into my lethargy/sickness.

  • SaturdayLong Run Saturday. The coldest temps yet and it was sooo windy. All my friends decided to skip the run. Boy, was I tempted to as well and join the other bloggers for a indoor bike ride ZOOM.  But I drove to The Crossings and got it done. It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t pretty.

there was sunshine but the wind overshadowed it.  Listened to some Peleton Rock but the cold was draining my iPhone battery.

After a soak in the hot tub and a hot shower, we headed up north for a Belated Anniversary dinner!  We walked around our marina and then had a cozy dinner in a heated igloo.

  • Sunday – Still cold but not as windy. Started my rest day with a 45 minute Peleton ride.

out of nowhere a ladybug landed on me!! So strange. A sign??

Then I set out for a longish hike hoping to explore a new place, a waterfall and not to fall on the ice!!  Well there was NO ice and several beautiful waterfalls on this crisp sunny day.  Loved this 3.5 mile out and back hike!! So many hidden gems in my area to explore.  What took me so long to find them?

Weekly Run Down for 1.11.21-1.17.21: Counting Down

Counting down until my THREE day weekend.

Counting down until Biden is sworn in as President.

Counting down until I get my COVID vaccines. (I became eligible this week and after a zillion failed attempts, I got an appt.)

Counting down until I can run an in-person race.

Some years, it’s hard to enjoy the present and you have to look ahead to better times.

That being said, so far, this year I have kept up my fitness goals – running easy, running long, walking, hiking, indoor biking (two activities each day.)

Last Week –

  • Monday – Another cold gray morning. Postponed going outside until lunchtime.  The sun never came out but it was at least a little warmer. I decided to try something new for my run. I drove to the park n ride, ran a mile to the high school, ran a mile around the track and then back to my car.  A really nice diversion. The track was empty, clear of ice/snow and easy on the feet. Maybe next time, I’ll even do some speed work.

It was only in the high 20s and I was cold for awhile but in the end, it was the right choice of clothing.

With a few more minutes each day of light, I was able to explore a local trail after work.

Van Dyke Preserve at dusk

  • Tuesday –  Before work I rode George since it was a rest day.

I decided to try and focus on one nugget said by each trainer (makes the chatter more meaningful) – today was (don’t quote me) -“The way you see yourself impacts what you can do.”

During my lunch break, I went for a short walk. Just out my back door and onto the waterline.

another very dreary cloudy day…at least there was no wind so it felt warmer than yesterday (even walking).

After work, I got in my 2nd daily (and longer) walk with a friend around our outdoor mall.

we always pass this giant Christmas ornament and I finally took a selfie in it.

I spent most of the evening trying to make an appt for my COVID-19 vaccine.  At the current time, it was only offered through April 16 at UAlbany and all the appts were filled or the website kept crashing….grrr!!!

  • Wednesday – After a sleepless and frustrated night, I decided to get out earlier for my walk today.

saw the sunrise but still had to be at my desk by 8 am so a short walk in the ‘hood..

And back to running. I had more time so I drove to do my lunch run. I wish I time for a more scenic location but they are either icy or too far.  I settled for the roads near the rail trail as I did last week.

still cloudy but a little warmer and dry so can’t complain

After work, I got in a second but longer walk with my BFF. But the good news is that I decided to check out the vaccine appts one more time (after checking them ALL day) and miraculously, I found an open slot for Jan. 19!! Super ecstatic.

still holiday decorations at the mall…like the reflection of the outdoor tree indoors

  • Thursday –I debated whether to take a rest day or run. It always depends on which day of the weekend my long run is and that depends on the weather.  I decided to walk at lunch and drive to the trails in our town park. I was wondering if they we would be icy.  Yes in most places!!

I only did one loop. Next time, I’ll wear my Yaks and do the other.

and then went for a run after work at UAlbany before my walk.

finally the paths were clear here and that tent in the top left is where the COVID vaccines will be given.

I met with friends again for a long walk after work (my 3rd night in a row at the same locale.)

decorations will soon be taken down here so I’m enjoying/sharing them.

  • Friday – With Saturday’s weather looking iffy and today being dry, my rest day turned in a run day. Rain was forecast for the afternoon so I needed to get out at lunch (or before work but that rarely happens.). To save time, I ran in the neighborhood. And I think I saw a glimmer of sun through my window in the morning but by the time I got out to run, it was gray and gloomy. I didn’t do a Peleton run because it used up all my data last month.  Instead, I listened to a podcast (that I had already downloaded.)

the poor snowman on the top lost his nose since yesterday

The rain held off until evening so there was time for a quick hike before dinner. And then my walking companion called me and insisted that we do another outdoor mall walk.  (I may have created a monster lol).

  • SaturdayLong Run Saturday postponed due to rain/snow. Instead, I started the day with a virtual bike ride (via ZOOM) with some other bloggers.  So fun.

40 min ride. my longest so far. went by so quickly when you are chatting

After housework and errands, I realized that I hadn’t taken my daily walk. It had stopped raining so I decided to seek out another waterfall trails.  I though that I might encounter ice and snow. Nope. Two miles of MUD!!! Still worth it.

It was also our Anniversary (22 years) so I wanted to do something special.  A hard decision since it is the Pandemic and the weather was lousy.  We I decided on outdoor dining… in an heated private igloo on Lake George. Unfortunately, the igloos were all booked but we have reservations for NEXT Saturday.

The Bolton Barrel

doesn’t that look cool?

So instead, take-out at home. And actually, if I run next Saturday am instead of on Sunday am, it will work out better to celebrate (with drinks) on a Saturday night. (Fingers crossed for good running weather next Sat. am.)

  • Sunday – Re-Scheduled Long Run Day. After four weeks running at the Crossings, I wanted to vary the location to the Nisky Bike Path. Rumors had it that the path was clear, at least in one direction but yesterday’s weather might have changed that so back again to The Crossing it was. I was so lucky to have Karen for a few miles, then Chris and Sherry.  It was harder than normal. I rewarded myself with a shopping spee at Trader Joe’s

still cloudy and windy but no ice. My FEET hurt more than normal , though. ugh!

This Coming Week –

  • Monday –  DAY OFF -bike, walk/hike
  • Tuesday – run, walk, COVID-19 vaccine
  • Wednesday –  rest day, walk, Sole Sisters ZOOM
  • Thursday – run, walk with friends
  • Friday – rest day, bike, walk
  • Saturday –  LONG RUN, walk
  • Sunday – rest day, bike, walk/hike

Weekly Run Down for 1.4.21-1.10.21: A New Year but More of the Same

Yes, it’s 2021 and a new year. But not much is new yet.

I will be more hopeful when the COVID cases stop increasing everyday and I get the vaccine.

Until then, the weather has not been my friend either (although it only snowed at the beginning of the week, it has been COLD.)

Happy to note that I will be riding George when I do not run and no matter what, I will walk everyday (and wear Yak Trax to do a little hiking).

Last Week –

  • Monday – I woke up to more snow than they predicted.

No stress when you are working from home…

Happy that it was a rest day and that I had George to keep me occupied. I’m working on getting some cycling legs. It still feels hard at low resistance. lol

chose the 30 min Elvis ride (the trainer was the same as for my Beatles run)

It’s hard after work to get in a long walk since it is gets dark so early still.  I took a chance on being able to hike a bit (with my yaks) at the Pine Hollow Arborteum.

It was pretty but a lot of snow – perfect for snowshoeing or Xcountry skiing lol

  • Tuesday –  .Snow really puts a kink in my routine.  You never know for sure where roads and paths would be clear.  I decided to run in the roads during lunch. It was fine but boring – no pretty flowers, fall foliage or holiday decorations to photograph. So my goal was to seek out snowmen…

and I found 3…also did a 30 min Peleton Hamilton run. I felt the same as with the Beatles. I just wanted to listen to the songs and sing along. Obviously others must enjoy all that chatter lol

Still making sure that I walk everyday.  With working, it’s easier for me to get out after work.  Today, I headed back to Five Rivers for a short walk before total darkness.

so peaceful and quiet

  • Wednesday – I had more time today so I walked BEFORE work. I just went through my yard onto the water line.  Such a great way to start the work day (even if the sky was gloomy and no pretty sunrise.)

no one here but me…so nice but no way to run on it with all the ice and ruts.

And I drove into town to do my run at lunch. I had briefly thought about a bike ride but no rain or snow so I gave it a shot. I scouted out the rail trail but nope, still too icy so I ran on the nearby neighborhood roads.

It was a Red day! (Sorry this was before the chaos broke loose in DC. I should have worn blue.) Lots of Christmas trees on the curbs. I ran my favorite Peleton run so far – 30 min of Madonna. Maybe because I’m a big Madonna fan and I also like the trainer, Matty. Not as much chatter and I enjoyed running intervals for the choruses of the songs. I also heard a new song – I Love NY!!! ❤

  • Thursday – Hooray for sunshine but boo for 20 degrees. I decided against that early morning walk.  But again, I drove at lunch to a location to do my run.  I parked in a different spot than the day before. The rail trail still was too icy in spots so I ran on the sidewalks and on the roads.  I again used the Peleton app for part of the run.  For some reason, it doesn’t show the distance on the watch while I’m running so I ended up with 4 miles rather than the planned 3. It may have been sunny but the wind made it feel awfully chilly.

like my selfie? Told you it was sunny. Today the Peleton run was to 60s music.

My after work (social distanced, masked) walks with friends resumed but today instead of on our usual Friday schedule. I hadn’t seen them in a few weeks so it was great to catch up. We decided to change to Thursday walks and maybe even add in another day.

  • Friday – After three days of running, today was declared a rest day and it was my busiest work day too. That gave me barely time for a 30 min bike ride during lunch (no Peleton, had to do work while I pedaled).

After work, I headed to the mall for a long wall without worrying about the dark.

  • SaturdayLong Run Saturday was back. The weather cooperated but still returned to The Crossings because I felt comfortable that I could avoid the ice by running there. I was able to run most of the miles with Sherry and Chris (Deb walked).  We wore our gaiters and kept apart so I felt totally safe.  Too cold to eat outside after our runs so the group brunch will have to wait until spring.

this may have been the coldest temps so far (teens) but once you got going (and chatting), it was fine.. the only thing that was cold were my thighs (need to wear lined tights next time).

  • Sunday – I started the day with 30 minutes on the bike sweating with Miley and Jess.

I really liked Jess and one thing that she said that I remember was: “Hurt doesn’t mean hard but it does mean growth.” 🙂

and then I wanted to get outdoors for a long walk or hike. So I dressed warm, grabbed my poles, Yak Trax and headed to Huyck Preserve. It was such a beautiful day.  The sun was shining brightly and the path was plowed. I didn’t even need my poles or Yaks. And the waterfalls were breathtaking.

This Coming Week –

  • Monday –  run, walk
  • Tuesday – rest day, walk, bike, hair appt, walk with BFF
  • Wednesday –  run, walk
  • Thursday – run, walk with friends
  • Friday – rest day, bike, walk
  • Saturday –  LONG RUN, wedding anniversary (22 years)
  • Sunday – rest day, bike, walk/hike

Weekly Run Down for 12.28.20-1.3.21: Happy New Year!!

Loving these four day work weeks.

This is the last one for a few weeks. No need to take a day off for hiking in the winter so I will wait until I can go on a vacation (or am going insane lol)

2021 has arrived. Hope it is a better year for everyone than 2020.

Last Week –

  • Monday – Rest day.  I did get out for a lunch walk on the water line (nothing interesting to photograph but the snow had at least melted).
  • Tuesday –  A cold day but the wind made it feel even colder.  I decided to run at lunch since at least the sun was out. I hate to run in my neighborhood unless I am pressed for time.  So I drove to the rail trail to see if I was able to run without slipping on ice.  It was ok at the beginning but then I ran into ice so I continued onto the road parallel to the trail.

my face, hands and feet were freezing…wind makes a huge difference. loved finding a HNY rock

  • Wednesday – Another cold windy day (not as sunny as yesterday but not as cold). Again I decided to avoid darkness and run during lunch. I drove to the trail trail but parked in a different location to see if it was less icy. It was but still not all clear.

still figuring out this clothing thing – cold into the wind but too warm with the wind at my back. Remembered my buff so at least my face didn’t freeze.

After work, I met my BFF for our walk around the outdoor mall.

  • Thursday – Another rest day on the schedule.  But I did go for a lunch walk.  I had thought briefly (very briefly) about going for my last run of the year but I had already passed my yearly goal.  So my mileage total stands at 1017 miles for 2020!!

Hard to believe it was New Year’s Eve.  Obviously not going out to celebrate or going to a party. We debated about what to do but since we didn’t see our sons and daughter-in-law for Thanksgiving or Christmas, we decided on a low key take out evening and gift exchange at my son’s house. It was so nice to be around family (get out of spandex and into dress up clothes lol).

  • Friday – DAY OFF for New Year’s Day. And my first run of 2021. Technically it was a virtual blogger run and a virtual 5k (NYRR Resolution Run). It’s always nice to have a real reason to run and to have the day off so you can run whenever the weather is at its best. So happy that there was no wind. In hindsight, I should have probably run 10 miles since a storm was predicted to be on the way. But I like my weekend long runs to be on the weekend and I don’t enjoy running them alone.

found another rock and a dry path

and jumped with all the other bloggers – such a great bunch of ladies. I feel fortunate to have their virtual support.

  • Saturday – Saturday weather lately has not cooperated for my long run. No problem. No races scheduled. I can easily run on Sundays.  So last night there was a few inches of snow and then it rained on and off most of the day… fingered crossed for clear roads for Sunday.

This weather has made re-think my lack of cross-training and with possible limited outdoor running locations, So I added a new member to my family:

I’m going to call him “George.” I have it set up in a spare bedroom (decorated with a Lake George theme) opposite a TV (so I can watch Netfix) and it also connects to my ipad and iphone for podcast listening.

Now that I have a bike, I enrolled in a free two month trial of Peleton and did a 30 min 90s bike ride.  Holy Moley! I was dripping in sweat.

Even though it was a rest day, I needed some fresh air so I decided to check out Five Rivers.  It was slushy, muddy and icy but so peaceful at dusk.

  • Sunday – Rescheduled Long Run. The roads and paths were iffy. Slushy at best so I decided to return to the Crossings (again) and run on the neighborhoods roads near the park. Unfortunately I was solo today.  But surprisingly, all the paths were clear. I did a few loops and then the last few miles on the roads.

It was harder and slower than running with my friends but I was able to sing along with the Beatles on a Peleton run

After a bagel, chocolate milk and a soak in the hot tub, I was energized to take a hike before the next storm arrived.  I decided to wear my Yak Trax for the first time hiking. I was nervous But No slipping and sliding.  I may hit the trails more this winter (to walk not run.)

It started to snow pretty hard so my hike got cut short. This was at HollyHock Hollow.

This Coming Week –

  • Monday –  rest day, walk, bike
  • Tuesday – run, walk
  • Wednesday –  rest day, walk, bike
  • Thursday – run, walk
  • Friday – rest day, walk, bike
  • Saturday –  LONG RUN, walk
  • Sunday – rest day, walk/hike

Weekly Run Down for 12.21.20-12.27.20: Merry Christmas to Everyone!! Fa la la la la.

If you celebrate, I hope you enjoyed a nice holiday (in spite of the Pandemic.)

our 2020 photo card

We had so much snow last week that I was afraid that it would be around until spring.  Quite challenging for this runner.

Then it rained. A lot! Slush. Ice. Yuck!

Good news for the week:

I met my goal for the year!!! Woo Hoo! Thrilled!!

Last Week –

  • Monday – I’m always looking ahead at the forecast and trying to figure out when to run.  Although I ran 10 miles the day before, I had a busy work day and only got out after work.

Hello Darkness.  Where to go?

The Holiday Lights in the Park!! I didn’t know if I could run on the roads there but at least I could walk and get into the holiday spirit.

no ice or snow on the roads but so many potholes and puddles.

  • Tuesday –  Today I had time to scout out the neighborhoods roads during lunch. Heat wave – 40 degrees! With the breeze and the high snow banks, it actually felt colder than the day before.

clear roads 🙂

  • Wednesday – Another busy work day.  I was able to sneak in a walk in the sunshine during lunch.

hope it will melt by spring.. until then I’m stuck in the ‘hood

After work, I headed to UAlbany to see if they made any headway in clearing the paths. The path seemed clear at first but then there were too many icy spots so I decided to instead run in the road. That was too dangerous since the road was narrow due to the high snow banks and cars didn’t seem to slow down (There was traffic because this is also a COVID testing center).  In the end, I ran around the inner campus roads which were completely clear and no cars (since the school was closed). It worked.

  • Thursday – Four days in a row of running (19 miles!!) Rest day on the schedule!! Heavy rain was predicted anyway. Since it had started yet, I went out for a holiday walk at lunch.

even a Jew can be festive on Christmas Eve…surprised to see part of the water line being plowed…still too muddy to walk or run on

I wish I had planned my running schedule better. With 50 degrees, I could have run in a skirt!!

And then the rain came so no Christmas Eve walk. Just some eggnog by the fireplace binge watching Netfix (while knitting).

  • Friday – A pandemic Christmas celebration. My stepson went to his in-laws and we just did a gift drive-by at my MIL’s.  So a quiet day. I was hoping to squeeze in a run between the rain drops.  The good news about all this rain was that the snow was melting (until it becomes ice, that is). I started out my run on the rail trail that was clear until it wasn’t. It was also way warmer than I thought when the rain stopped (almost 60 degrees). I continued my run on the roads near the trail. Eventually the wind came which made it more comfortable and then it started to rain again. Luckily I was almost done.

over dressed for sure. I was sweating. Planned on at least 3 miles or maybe 4 but got carried away.

But with at least 4 miles, I finished my 2020 mileage goal a week early.

It rained on and off all day but with most of snow gone, I decided to check out the trails. I thought about Bozenkill or Wolf Creek but when it started to rain hard, I changed my mind to some place closer. I hadn’t been to HollyHock Hollow since summer and boy, was I surprised at the high raging creek.

It was like the rapids so mesmerizing. I would have stayed longer but it was getting dark.

  • Saturday – Again, I decided that Sunday had warmer temps, more sun and less wind so Long Run Saturday became LONG RUN SUNDAY.

I woke up to the clear roads being dusted with more snow (and the temps in the 20s).  I was planning on a hike but I always get nervous about ice. But off I went anyway in search of high water and waterfalls.

First stop was Bozen Kill.  The trails were very icy and muddy but I did get some views of the creek as I waded through the snow.

The next stop, which was nearby, was Wolf Creek.  This one was fairly crowded but so icy that I didn’t go all the way to the big waterfall and walked back on the road. The small waterfall was pretty nice. I need to return here wearing Yak Trax.

My third stop was going to be Hannacroix Ravine but the parking lot was a mess and I didn’t want to park on the side of the road so I headed home.  On the way, I stopped at Five Rivers to see Vloman Kill.  This place was crowded as well.  Glad to see families out hiking. I was immediately informed that the loop around the creek lost the bridge and it was no longer a loop.  So I walked to the end and then walked back.

My final stop was to see the Normans Kill.  It was snowy but less icy than the other locations so was able to walk around for awhile.

Unfortunately, I’m kind of a wuss when it comes to hiking on the icy trails.  And there’s a lot of beauty out there in the winter.

  • Sunday – A repeat of last week. All our bike paths will be ice covered for a while. So I returned to the Crossings and to my surprise, all the paths were clear.  It was cold (20s) but the sun was shining brightly and I had the company of one or two friends for ALL of my miles… the first time since October that no part of my run was solo.

we looped around the park several times…each time I removed one item of clothing (vest, mittens)… lots of great conversation made the miles go by quicker

No doubt, there will be another walk or hike before the day is done. And I have a masked knitting date tonight.

This Coming Week –

  • Monday –  rest day
  • Tuesday – run
  • Wednesday –  run
  • Thursday – rest day
  • Friday – New Years – DAY OFF – virtual NYRR Resolution 5k
  • Saturday –  rest day
  • Sunday – LONG RUN

Weekly Run Down for 12.14.20-12.20.20: Let It Snow, Let It Snow…Somewhere Else

I know it’s December but I have no gym access (and no equipment at home). Snow puts a real kink in my active life (especially when they predict one foot and you get 30 inches!!)

Thank you all for your kind words regarding my recent loss. I do appreciate you all being a part of my journey.

Running and hiking continue and keep me sane.

Last Week –

  • Monday – I had to work in the evening so I had the morning off. Between the rain and snow showers, it was hard to figure out a time to get out the door. I just threw on my trail shoes and hit the road. It snowed the whole run but it was invigorating having snow flakes flying in my face. I chose a new trail that I was able to run on (for the most part).

too bad you can’t see the flurries in my pics.

And I still had more time so I continued with a walk on my favorite trail at Fiver Rivers.

I think I have an obsession with running water lol

  • Tuesday – Today I had the day off from work. That meant I had time to go for both a run and a hike (even though it was freezing.)

First, I headed out for a sunny, yet frigid windy run. I drove the Albany end of the rail trail because I like the scenery there and I haven’t run there in a while. It did not disappoint despite that the first half was uphill.

When I returned, I drove to Salem Art Works to hike some of the trails. It was a long drive but I know hiking for the most part will end when ice and snow arrive so I’d better continue checking places off my list. The views were great and the artwork interesting.  The trails were not well marked, snowy and kinda slippery. So I spent more time walking around the artwork.

Afterward I headed to nearby Battenkill Creamery for….

I also picked up some of my favorite chocolate milk (and eggnog)

In the evening, I met my BFF for a long walk in the outdoor mall (brrrrr).

  • Wednesday – I hadn’t planned on another day off from work but we had go to a funeral/burial for my grandson. RIP Julian Thomas ❤

Afterwards, I wasn’t in the mood for a run but I knew I needed to get out and a foot of snow was predicted overnight. So I bundled up and headed to the opposite end of the rail trail (from Tuesday.)

It was single digits with wind chill but felt warmer than the day before or maybe I just over dressed. Happy to see that the art work on the trees was still in tact.

After some grocery shopping, I decided to hit the trails… maybe for the last time without snow covering them.

the calm before the storm at Normans Kill West

  • Thursday – No running or walking with all that snow. Glad to be working from home.

and still falling …

but once my hubby plowed out the driveway, I did put on my boots and went for a short walk at lunch (and then shoveled out my hot tub).

priorities

Obviously there was no way to drive or run…too much snow in the roads (and the plow has come by twice already) but again I went for a walk.  Sad to see all the holiday decorations buried.

  • Friday – Undecided if I should run or not…always depends on whether I was planning a long run on Saturday or on Sunday. But between the snow and the frigid temps, Sunday seemed like a better day.

At lunch, I just headed out my front door to see if I could run safely in the roads. And I did …barely. Some roads still had a lot of snow so I had to run in the middle of the road but on some, the snow was packed down so it was easy to run on. But any run where the sun is shining is a good one.

The temp was in the teens but it didn’t really feel cold…just a vest instead of a jacket and I felt fine

After work, I headed to UAlbany to check out the paths and then for a walk with friends around an outside mall (per usual on Friday evenings.)

  • Saturday – So where does one hike with two feet of snow covering? Still trying to figure that one out. I think I need to buy snowshoes or cross country skis!! Instead, I got my workout in by shoveling the snow off our deck.
  • Sunday – Re-Scheduled Long Run Day.  It was not warm but warmer. I headed over to the Crossings in hopes that their paths may be plowed and if not, I could run in the roads.   The paths were plowed but still slippery so we decided to run in the roads (in a nearby neighborhood.) Stan joined Karen & I for the first few miles and I ran just with Karen. When she left, I just continued on my own until I bumped into a former student of mine.

running is so much easier with friends!!

I had a busy afternoon planned. I had booked a holiday tour of Ten Broeck Mansion at 2:30 pm. Unfortunately, it got cancelled due to the snow.

Another thing to add to my list for next year.

and then I also had a ZOOM with my college friends scheduled for 4:30 pm. Always great connecting with these folks.

This Coming Week –

  • Wednesday –  run

Weekly Run Down for 12.7.20-12.13.20: Happy Chanukah!

This week was a mixed bag.

It started on a high note.  Having just run a real race and had a mini vacay in NYC, I felt energized.

I am smiling beneath that gaiter 🙂

I took off a day from work this week and the weather was perfect for a run and a hike.

Things went downhill from there.

My external laptop monitor died (which is essential for my job). Not a big deal, I ordered a new one (and hooked up temporarily an old one).

But by the end of the week, I was in tears. My daughter-in-law lost the baby (at 15 weeks). No words for how devastated my family is.

Back to running. (I felt I had to share even though it’s personal because I posted in the Coffee Date that I was going to be a grandmother.)

Last Week –

  • Monday – Walking around NYC in boots rather than running shoes made my feet ache so I decided to call it a rest day. It was cold and breezy so it wasn’t a hard decision.

I did keep my streak alive (I think I have one…) of taking a walk at lunch. And then a short after work before getting my nails and my errands (that got missed over the weekend) done.

  • Tuesday – Another cold dreary morning. Again not tempted to walk before work. But dragged myself out at lunch for a run. I froze!!!!

Not only cloudy but windy too. I looked when I was done and it was “feels like 15 degrees!!” Ouch.

After work, I was not even tempted to go outdoors for a walk or hike.  I, instead, went to the mall to get in some steps (in a warm environment.)

  • Wednesday – Woke up to snow showers…UGH!  But the snow did stop with not much accumulated.  Again, I skipped my morning walk but got out at lunch.

It was still flurrying a bit and cold but not as windy as the day before.  The only thing that was cold was my feet.  I wore my trail shoes since I ran on the roads and there was a lot of black ice.

and I didn’t take any books or dvds today lol

No walk after work since I had a hair appt.

so fun to complete a virtual race virtually with friends. Thanks Jenn for the collage.

  • Thursday – Today I had the day off from work. It was nice to be able to run in the morning. Though cold, it is my favorite time of day to run. And I had time to drive somewhere to run. I decided to go to the Crossings followed by a trip to Trader Joe’s.

I had signed up for one more NYRR virtual 5k (see pic above) so I officially completed it today. Sorta. My watch died.  I started out in the park but it was slushy and icy so I continued onto a snowy trail and eventually ran in the neighborhoods.

notice anything amiss in my photo?

In the afternoon, I planned to go on a hike. I went back to the Van Buren Nature Trails (that I had visited a few weeks ago.) My friend Jan agreed to meet me there.

there were 4 colored trails…somehow we didn’t complete what we had planned…back again for visit #3, I guess.

Tonight was the first night of Chanukah so I lit the candles.  No gifts exchanged here.

flowers from TJ’s – they last 3 weeks so I can always have flowers in my house 🙂

  • Friday – No running today. But got in a few chilly walks.

more cute balloons in the ‘hood

The longer one was done with a friend after work around the outdoor mall.

  • Saturday – Back on track with my Saturday Long Runs. This week, we returned to the Nisky Bike Path. We hoped to get it done (including brunch) before the predicted rain.

I got there early to run 4 miles with Karen and then ran 6 more with my other friends. 10 done for day. No reason to run this many miles since I have no idea when my next half will be but what the hell? It definitely felt harder than usual. I think that skipping the 10 miler (in lieu of a 5k + 15 mile walk) had an effect.  I need the consistency, I guess.

and yes, we’re still doing outdoor brunch

  • Sunday – My traditional hiking day.  Since I’ve never hiked in the winter, I was leery of going anywhere where there would be ice or snow. I guess that is pretty limiting to any of the pretty mountain hikes.

I decided on Amy’s Park up north since there were several easy trails to choose from.

There is a race there but it was changed to virtual this year.

It was rainy on my drive up but happily it stopped and turned out to be a very nice day.  The trail was quit wet and muddy so I hiked the easy yellow (in both directions). I was alittle disappointed in the trails being out and back,

always love a waterfall

Since it was along drive, I decided I wanted to do more hiking. I stopped at a preserve but realized that it was way too icy so I continued into town.  I passed Up Yonda Farms and took a chance that there would be nice trails there. What a treasure!! I’ve been boating for 15 years there and never visited these trails.

lots of different trails and of course, an awesome view of Lake George.

It was so nice that I stopped for ice cream (egg nogg – tis the season).

Nothing like a day out in nature to take you mind off things.

This Coming Week –

  • Monday –  morning off, run
  • Tuesday – DAY OFF, run, hike, mall walk with BFF
