Weekly Run Down for 3.5.23-3.12.23: Status Quo

No Running, No Races.

Working, drinking lots of wine (kidding).

But I did volunteer at a 10k yesterday.

Electric City 10K

Last Week:

  • Started the week (Sunday) by brunching with my running friends (The storm postponed it from Saturday.)

Then I took my first outdoor walk since I broke my foot. I drove to UAlbany because I knew the path would be clear.

I walked about 2 miles… I had considered doing the whole 3m. loop but I decided to play it safe.

  • Taught remotely (Tues-Fri)
  • Rode my stationary bike every day (binge watching Ginny & Georgia)
  • Went for a few more walks (Mon, Tues, Thurs)

new shoes + Shamrock shake

I walked, they ran but nice to have company

  • Signed up with a friend for our 3rd year at the Lake George Hike-a-thon

  • Had Indian food with a former co-worker (I have lots more free time when I can’t run.)
  • Hosted mah jongg (postponed from last Friday evening).
  • Volunteered at the 10K that I had signed up to run.  It was a very cold snowy morning but so many runners did show up.  I worked at packet pick-up. When I was done, I drove to where my friends were running, walked a bit and then went out to brunch with everyone.

This Coming Week on the Run–

The same boring routine (daily walks and stationary bike rides) with an added hair appt and:

  • Traveling to NYC on Saturday to support my local running friends who are running the NYC Half Marathon, visiting the expo and meeting up with a few bloggers.
  • Cheering and spectating my first race ever on Sunday (and then returning home a day earlier than planned.)

This Coming Week on the Blog –

  • Tuesday – Electric City 10k Race Recap Runners’ Wish List
  • Friday –  Five Running Superstitions

A clean house is a sign of an injured runner | Running humor ...

Happy Running! How is your year of running so far? Training for any big races?  Do you enjoy spectating races? Please share.

FFF: Five+ Things I Enjoy When Not Running

Ok, you gotta have a sense of humor, right?

1. Don’t care about the weather forecast.

Snow, rain, sleet… who cares?

12 mile long run

2. Don’t have to schedule my runs around my work and other obligations.

Go out to dinner or the movies or whatever whenever?  Even work travel doesn’t bother me.

weekly evening run

3. Carb loading for long runs and races is not necessary.

Chinese or Mexican food on Friday night?  Yes, bring it on.

And drink as much alcohol as I need want…

4. Less laundry.

Let’s face it.  Runners wear several outfits a day. When I travel, most of my suitcase is running clothes.

5. Saving money!!

My expensive running shoes will last longer. Save money on transportation and hotels for those out of town races. Sign up for fewer races.

+ More free time for other activities.

Reading, listening to podcasts, knitting, TV, seeing friends, volunteering at races, get on my stationary bike….

Horse: A Novel

Ginny & Georgia (TV Series 2021– ) - IMDb

All those things that took a backseat when running (and training for races) was my top priority.

Who am I kidding?

TT: International Women’s Day

In celebrating tomorrow’s International Women’s Day, our topic today is to discuss those women athletes whom we admire.

I decided, although I admire many female athletes, to focus on “older” women runners:

So my first pick would be Joan Benoit Samuelson. First women’s Olympic Games marathon champion.

If you have never watched this video, you must (with tissues nearby): Joan Benoit 1984

Joan qualified for the race 2 weeks after having knee surgery!!!

I actually met her a few years ago at the Freihofer Run for Women Expo. (I even got her autograph.)

I was also lucky enough to run with her when she came to Albany, NY back in 2012 to premiere her movie.

My second pick may not be someone everyone knows. She is not a former Olympian but she has also become one of my idol – Jeannie Rice.
Her Marathon Time Is Astounding—And Not Just for 71 - WSJ
This lady is 75 years old has been running for 40 years without a single injury. She holds the world and/or national record at every distance. (She just finished the Tokyo Marathon in 3:30!!)

She has run over 150 marathons and still runs at least 11-12 miles each day (6-8 marathons a year.)

If you have time, listen to her interview on this podcast and read her advice here.

I’d love to meet her sometime when I’m in Naples, FL.

Both of these older runners have not let age hold them back.  Obviously they have native ability but we know that just gets you so far.  I’d love to run with either one and hopefully their zest for life and running would rub off on me.

My third pick is Harriet Thompson. She was a cancer survivor who started to run marathons when she was 76 and ran the fastest time in a marathon for a woman over 90.

91 Going on 26.2 - Women's Running

Unfortunately, she died at age 94 from a fall down a flight of steps while she was delivering birthday gifts at her retirement community.

Number 4: Julia Hawkins. Imagine starting to run at age 100!!  That’s exactly what Julia did and she has set many world records in her age group.

Julia 'Hurricane' Hawkins, 103, Breaks Running Record

She is currently 106 and continues to run.

Of course I must add as number 5, my new hero, Betty Lindberg:

You can listen to her story on Ali’s podcast here.

Last but not least is Kathrine Switzer.  She is most well known for her famous run in the Boston Marathon in 1967. At the time, women were barred from competing in the race, so Switzer signed up under the name K.V. Switzer and she managed to complete the entire distance, even though the race director tried to pull her off the course.

Kathrine Switzer finishes Boston Marathon again, 50 years later - The Boston Globe

running Boston in 2017

And now, at 76 years old, she is still running and inspiring women (including me) everywhere.

Happy Running! So which women athletes (or runners) do you admire? Please share.

Not the kind I planned.

Last Week:

No running… but:

  • Teaching live rather than remotely for 3 days. 1 day (Wed, Thurs, Fri the other days got cancelled due to snow)

so prefer live as opposed to remote teaching even if I had to stand all day with a broken foot

  • Dinner out with my tennis friends. (Thurs)

❤ our monthly dinners

  • Hosting mah jongg. (Fri) (cancelled due to the weather)

Sat. AM

  • Brunch with my running friends. (Sat postponed until Sunday)

Fitness-wise:

  • Squeezing in time on the stationary bike (Sun, Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri, Sat)

another great podcast… Cari & I met her in Bermuda in 2020,

tennis player turned runner (can relate there) who specializes in treating runners with injuries (in NYC)

  • Mall walks (Mon & Tues)

Thanks for the reminder, Virgin Pulse…

This Coming Week on the Run–

More of the same.

  • Some walking?
  • Some stationary biking?
  • Another DNS. Electric City 10k.
  • Brunch with my running friends.

FFF: Ultimate Coffee Date for March 2023

It’s that time of the month…

time to join up with Coco & Deborah for their ultimate coffee date.

That mug is the theme of this post…

It was the best of times:

1. Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed having a vacation AWAY from WORK.

I’m already looking forward to my next week off in May.

Home office concept, woman working from home, student or freelancer. Cute vector illustration in flat style Stock Vector Image & Art - Alamy

No computer for a week!!!

2.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that while on vacation, I was able to check off almost everything on my bucket list.

    • Watch sunrise over the ocean.
    • Sunbathe on the beach.
    • Visit nature preserves.
    • Attend a professional tennis match.
    • Run.
    • Enjoy good food and drink.
    • See many cool wildlife (esp. alligators and birds).
    • Enjoy sunshine every day.

3.Over coffee

I’d tell you that I was able to connect with 5 out of 6 friends who live in Florida whom I would never see otherwise if I didn’t visit.

4.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that my friends were wonderful and accommodating making sure I was comfortable and having fun.

5.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I returned to the best news ever.  You may remember that my daughter-in-law in Dec 2020 lost a baby boy at 4 months.

God willing, I will have a GRANDDAUGHTER on Sept. 3, 2023!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NYC – Nov. 5, 2023!

It is the worst of times:

As I deal with my life right now: without running, I realize:

Friday Five 2.0: Running as Therapy | My First 5K and More...

I know that it’s not permanent (and could have been a lot worse).

TT: How To Heal a Broken Foot

Obviously I’m NO doctor so this is just based on Googling and common sense.

And we’ll know in a few weeks (or months) if it worked.

  • Ice and NSAIDs to reduce pain and swelling in the first few days.
  • Elevation to also reduce swelling in the first few days.
  • X-rays to see how serious the fracture is and if it needs to be surgically repaired.
  • Immobilization – a protective boot for some broken bones, while others may only require a stiff-bottom shoe that keeps foot joints from moving.

  • Keep weight off your foot (as much as possible) the first few days (or until pain subsides).
  • Add a Calcium and Vitamin D supplement to your diet.

  • Eat a Healthy Diet.

  • Don’t smoke.
  • Keep sugar levels under control.
  • Early movement and exercise to promote circulation and ensure your foot does not become too stiff as well as to increase the speed of healing.

these shoes were made for walking (I never ran in them)

Glad I never gave away that unused stationary bike.

  • Be Patient!
  • Stay Positive!!!!!!!

Happy Running! Have you ever broken your foot or other bone?  Any  other suggestions? Please share.

Weekly Run Down for 2.12.23-2.25.23: Not How It Was Supposed To Be

My vacation to Florida has come and gone.

It started out so well but quickly went downhill.

Other than my lack of running, in addition to my regular job, I worked as technical support to the NYS Bar Exam takers this past week.

Two Weeks Ago:

  • Sunday – After an early morning flight to Ft Lauderdale, FL, I rented a car and drove to Boca Raton to stay with my college roommate.

The weather was beautiful so we spent the day wandering around some trails at Loxahatchee..

the most exciting part was the huge alligator we spotted

Then we went out for a delicious seafood dinner.

Afterward, we returned home in time to catch the Super Bowl.

  • Monday – Of course, my first goal of the trip was to run at sunrise with a view of the ocean. And I did.

After I ran along the ocean, I finished my run in this park.

It was still early so I took advantage of my free time and visited two local nature preserves.

not much wildlife but very scenic and peaceful.

The weather was cool (for Florida but warm for a NYer) and sunny so we spent the afternoon at South Boca Beach

blue skies and sunshine ❤

Afterward we enjoyed another nice relaxing dinner out.

  • Tuesday – Again I decided to get up early to see the sunrise.

I chose a different beach than the day before and parked far away so that afterward I could run back to my car.

On the way to the beach, I tripped on a curb, went down in pain.

I did watch the sunrise but had to walk back to my car on a foot that was most likely broken.

Now what to do?

There were several options but I felt that although running and hiking were out, I could stay in Florida and try to enjoy myself rather than immediately returning home.

My roommate and I decided to go to a different beach (Deerfield Beach) where I had to do minimal walking.

It was a beautiful day but my mind was elsewhere. However, I did meet a lovely lady who invited me to Houston to run a race there.

the bottom pic is from dinner the night before LOL

My next stop was an hour drive north to Hobe Sound to stay with a friend who had recently lost her husband.

She was as gimpy as me since she was recovering from Achilles surgery.

We enjoyed a peaceful dinner at her home and then watched some TV and chatted.

  • Wednesday – Obviously running was out of question. I was even too depressed to go see the ocean sunrise.

We did eventually go for a drive and sat by Jupiter Island Beach followed by a delicious late lunch in Stuart

and ice cream for dinner!!!

  • Thursday – In the morning, I packed up and drove back south to Delray Beach to stay with a friend.

We spent several hours at the pool where we had lunch and soaked up some needed Vitamin D.

Afterward, she was nice enough to get a wheelchair so we could visit the bird sanctuary we always go to.

it was nesting time at Wakodahatchee..

For dinner, we ate at an outdoor restaurant along the ocean.

  • Friday – Today I had plans to attend the Delray Tennis Open with another friend.

Little did I know that I would have to purchase handicap seats.

First we watched some players practice for their semi final match the next day.

Luckily my friend did not mind pushing my wheelchair up multiple ramps to our seats.

We had a great view and watched an exciting men’s doubles quarter final match and then half of a men’s singles quarter final match.  It started to rain after the first set but we were ready to leave anyway.

Then we joined the friend I was staying with for a pizza dinner in town.

  • Saturday – Another change in plans. I was supposed to meet a former coworker for a nature (birding) walk.

Instead we met for brunch and then I headed back to Fort Lauderdale to return my car and catch a plane home.

we taught French together many moons ago!!

Yes. A day early.

Fortunately I was able to get wheelchair assistance every step of the way.

  • Sunday – A1A Publix Fort Lauderdale Half Marathon=DNS

I looked forward to running this race that I had trained for and also to meeting up with Jenny and her husband who were going to run it with me. (If you read Jenny’s blog, you now know that this half was doomed for all 3 of us.)

Instead I was home trying to figure out how to navigate life at home and at work on crutches.

Fortunately, I was able to locate a walking boot from my broken ankle (in 2012!!)

Last Week:

  • Monday – Luckily I was to get an appt with an orthopedic today (and it was a holiday so I was off from work.)

I was quite nervous wondering how serious the break was and if I would need surgery.

The doctor looked at my foot (which was totally purple but no longer swollen or painful) and said that he doubted that it was broken.  In fact, he asked me to bet with my hubby who agreed with him.

So he ordered x-rays.

Then he came back in the room and said to my hubby “She won!!”

Yup. It was broken.  A small hairline fracture.  He said that it was no big deal and would heal naturally in no time.

The doctor said that I didn’t need to to use crutches or even wear the boot. I could wear shoes and walk (as long as it didn’t hurt.)

One more x-ray scheduled for March 20… and it should be healed!?

I plan to err on the side of caution and wear the boot for a week several days and then try walking… (maybe even use my stationary bike.)

  • Tuesday-Saturday – Just trying to stay positive… (not go insane or think about all those missed races…)

As they say, this too shall pass…

Fingers crossed that it will heal quickly.

that heavy boot was hurting my hip so I have switched to regular running shoes (that I never ran in)

On Friday, I actually walked 2 miles while working the bar exam.

On Saturday, instead my usual long run, I put in 6 miles on the stationary bike..

borrowed that orthopedic shoes from a friend… loved Ali’s podcast!

and then met my running friends for their post run/walk brunch.

This Coming Week on the Run–

  • NADA!

FFF: Runfessions for Feb. 2023

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1.  I runfess…

This may sound depressing but when I heard that my best friend from Junior High died (went to bed with a headache and never woke up), I decided CARPE DIEM and to sign up for that marathon while I am able.

and so I clicked:

2.  I runfess…

Last month, my hubby caught COVID (Sorry I didn’t post about it).

He had a mild case and it didn’t interfere with my running/social schedule. 😉 and I never caught it!!!

3. I runfess…

Some runners enjoy running alone.  I don’t mind for short runs.

But more than 4 miles… I NEED company.

I am hoping I don’t regret having to run those 16, 18, 20 milers next Fall!!!

my companions for that dreaded 12 miler!!

So fingers crossed that a few of my local running friends get into the NYC marathon lottery.

4. I runfess…

I LOVE to race (as you probably know) and sign up for as many races as I can (in advance).  This was my plan for the next few months.  Those in BOLD are paid for but those in ITALICS are non-refundable, non-transferrable, only available through time qualifying or a lottery and expensive. The others are ones that I planned to run:

    • 02-19-23 – Publix Fort Lauderdale Half Marathon
    • 03-11-23 – Electric City 10k
    • 03-19-23 – United NYC Half Marathon
    • 03-26-23 – Shamrock Shuffle
    • 04-15-23 – Helderberg to Hudson Half Marathon
    • 04-30-23 – Sasha’s Super Hero 5k
    • 05-07-23 – Tropicool 5k
    • 05-13-23 – Prospect Mountain Run
    • 05-18-23 – CDPHP Workforce Team Challenge (3.5m)
    • 05-20-22 – Brooklyn Half Marathon
    • 05-28-23 – Miles on the Mohawk 10 miler
    • 06-03-23 – Freihofer Run for Women 5k
    • 06-18-23 – Valley Cats Father’s Day 5k
    • 06-25-23 – Race to the Lakes 15k
    • 06-25-23 – Dodge the Deer 5k
    • 07-04-23 – Firecracker 4
    • 08-13-23 – Run for the Roses 5k

As in the last 10 years, my body has cooperated.

June 1, 2013 – my last serious injury!!

5. I runfess…

In addition to not liking to run alone, I don’t like to race alone. I am a well-known race enabler.  Just ask my friends.  And it is unfortunate when I talk them into signing up and sharing hotel rooms and I cannot run. (Details on this will be coming in the WRD on Sunday.)

Sherry & Stan (pictured right) signed up for those March, April and May half marathons due to my urging.)

Happy Running! Anything to runfess this month? Anyone else enter the lottery for the NYCM 2023? Do you plan your racing schedule way in advance? Have injuries ever forced you to DNS a big race? Please share.

TT: 6 Favorites of 2022

Still looking back on last year.

Today’s Topic is to list SIX favorites of 2022

Here you go:

1.Thursday Night Trail (Walks)

These are free and organized by one of our local running organizations. Many folks run these trails but my friends and I last year walked them.  It was so fun to visit different locations each week, chat and often go out for dinner or ice cream afterward.

2. Monday Hikes

Starting in June, I changed my work schedule and so I was able to go hiking every other Monday.  I was lucky to have a friend to join me and we explored different scenic trails, mostly in MA.

3. October Race-Cation

This has become a tradition. Each fall, a group of my running friends and I rent a house for 4 days and run a race together.  In 2022, we traveled to Maine.

4. Local Races.

You all know how I love to race.  But my favorites are the ones nearby where I can share the experience with friends. 2022 was a great year for that… 34 races and over 20 were local.

5. Florida Getaways

I travel to Florida twice a year – in February to visit friends on the east coast and in May to play tennis on the west coast.

I get to see ocean sunrises on one trip and ocean sunsets on the other.

6. Boating and Reading

In the summer months, my hubby and I try to spend every Sunday on our boat on Lake George and my favorite activity is not swimming but to spend the day reading (in my orange chair)!!

Happy Running! So what are some of your favorites of 2022? Please share.

FFF: 5 Self Care Ways to Show Yourself Love

I apologize in advance that the things below may not be healthy or related to running:

1.Food.

I don’t drink soda or snack on junk food but I do enjoy my brunches out with friends and my post-run ice cream!!

2. Wine

Again I don’t drink much or often, but my occasional evening glass of red wine is a relaxing way to end a stressful day.

3. Hair Care

No, I will not let my hair go gray (but no judgment on those who do).

I guess I’m trying not to look 69… LOL

I have my hair cut and colored on a regular basis. And I have no plans of stopping.

4.Nail Care

Like my hair, I always get my nails done on a regular basis…

I wear ANC French so it does last for many many weeks.

5. Matching Clothes

Yes, I’m addicted to having everything I wear match!!

Happy Running! So how you show yourself love? Please share.
