Runfessions for October

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I wore brand new running shoes out of the box for my 20 miler.

It was during a 7 mile re-race run followed by a half marathon. And they were the same as shoes I had previously wore out — just a new pair. I was in pain but it was NOT because of the shoes LOL

happy to be nearing the finish line (and my cheering friends)

Anyone else race in new shoes?

2. I runfess…

I skipped one of my long runs in favor of a 10K race.

It was supposed to be a 14 miler but I did walk 8 miles that day in addition to the Grete’s Great Gallop 10k race in NYC.

a fun time in Central Park

Anyone else not worry about getting in ALL their long runs?

3.I runfess…

I signed up for a race the day after my 20 mile training run.

I planned to walk it. I was in a lot of pain during the second half of the run (and after) but the next morning all the pain was gone. I was good, though and walked MOST of it. Check out that 5k finish time LOL.

Anyone else recover from a long run or big race with a race?

4. I runfess…

I also signed up for a 15K race the week after my first full marathon.

I was at a recent expo and there was a discount. Again, I can take it slow if I am still sore, right?

during last year’s Stockade-athon

Anyone else race right after a full marathon ?

5.I runfess…

I also may run a 5k race (tomorrow the week before my full marathon and add on 5 miles before or after.)

It’s for a great cause and my running friends are busy this weekend. Why not race/run?

Runfessions for September

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I don’t comment on most blogs.

I read many running blogs. But I either don’t have time to comment and they won’t let me comment using my iphone.

I feel guilty since I enjoy when runners comment on my posts.

Anyone else read blogs but don’t comment?

2. I runfess…

I post for myself.

My readership is pretty small. But I’m okay with it.

I often don’t even link up my posts.

If you read my post from last Friday about why I blog, you know that I plan to continue blogging even if no one reads my blog.

Anyone else not worry about who reads their blog?

3.I runfess…

My life if not perfect.

Some people have commented that I am so lucky, I get to travel, have so many friends, do so many interesting things, etc.

Um…. there is plenty of not so great things going on with my family, friends, work, etc.

I just prefer not to share those things.

For the most part, I blog about my running and on FB and IG, I like sharing the good stuff.

(I not NOT judging those who share all kinds of things – good and bad.  I do enjoy getting to know you better.)

Anyone else prefer to keep the bad stuff in their life private?

4. I runfess…

I’m planning my Marathon outfit.

It’s the one thing I can control. My training runs, the weather, my ache and pains… NOPE).

So I am definitely wearing a Skirt Sports skirt (with pockets), NYCM compression calf sleeves, race belt, baseball cap.

But the shirt. I want it to represent where I’m from. So it will probably be from a local race (H2H, MHM or Freohofers.)

Anyone else obsess over their race outfit ?

5.I runfess…

I miss racing.

When I wasn’t training for a full marathon, I would race almost every weekend.  Around here, in the fall, there are so many races to choose from.

I’m trying to be good about getting my long runs in.  But it’s so hard not to click that “register” button.

Just a few of the races I’m skipping:

Friday Five Runfessions for August

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I was raced obsessed again this month. Three races but TWO races in ONE week!

  • August 14, a 5k in Brooklyn
  • August 17, a local 5k

(I came to my senses and DNSed a one mile race on Aug 19. Good thing, I was in NYC working on Aug 21 so I couldn’t run another 5k.)

Anyone else ever run more than one race in a week?

2. I runfess…

I am still confused on the shoe/foot issue.

One day the pain is gone. One day for no reason, it is back.

I’ve gone back to wearing my neutral Nikes for short distances. Sometimes they are fine. Sometimes not.

wore them for my 5k here

Then I added my insoles to my new Mizunos for long runs and they felt better…sorta.

10 mile run

Anyone wear different shoes for different distances?

3.I runfess…

Last month I bought a new Garmin, a 230 but I have yet to try it. Still doing my weekly runs naked and my races with my Garmin 205.

Anyone else hesitate to make technology changes or when you buy a new watch, do you use it right away?

4.I runfess…

Every year, my tennis friends and I go to NYC to see a Broadway show.

I do the organizing so I picked this show:

Image result for hadestown

won a Tony for best musical

and got group tix for October 5.

Yup, this 10k race is why I chose Oct. 5.

Do plan races when you visit another city? Anyone else running Grete’s Great Gallop?

5.I runfess…

I used to play tennis almost everyday and on numerous teams. Then running came into the picture and tennis no longer seemed to fit.

2010 was the last year that I seriously competed o a tennis team

I thought I didn’t miss it but I watched tennis at the Aurora Games and last weekend, I hung out with my tennis friends. And now the US Open is on TV.

Yup, I do miss it.

Has running replaced any other activity in your life?  Do you think that you will ever stop running?

Friday Five Runfessions for July

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I almost went to a race without registering first. I always run the Silks and Satins 5K so I guess I thought I did register. I am not a last minute person so I would have registered a while ago.

So a few days before the race, I went to the website to see which of my friends were running it and I did NOT see my name.

Oops. Senior brain!

I registered that day.  Phew.

Anyone else ever show up to a race without registering first?

2. I runfess…

I did not travel at all in July.

So it was a challenge to keep running interesting.  I get bored easily and don’t like to run in the same places.

So I don’t. See below:

Rail Trail … Washington Park … UAlbany

Zim Smith Trail … Corning Bike Path … Nisky Bike Path

Anyone else try to vary where you run or do you run in the same places?

3.I runfess…

I ordered a new pair of Mizunos.  Why??

My right foot all of sudden started having that annoying bunion pain that I had years ago.  It’s fine until after 5-6 miles which is what I’ll be doing every weekend until Nov 3!!

I’m pretty sure it is not from running but job-related – ugh those dress shoes and standing for hours in them. (They are comfortable until the end of the day… and then they’re not.)

bazu-7525023

happy in my Nikes

The benefit of a blog is that I could look up when my foot stopped hurting. It seems to be the fall of 2015 when I bought my Nike Vomero running shoes.  I recently stopped wearing them because I wanted to run in a stability shoe instead after a calf injury.

The Mizunos were super comfortable for THREE half marathons and now this pain…

Hmmm? Do I go back? To my Nikes?

Can I be happy again in my Mizunos?

So recently I ran the first 3 miles of my long run in my Nikes and the last 5 miles in my new Mizunos (but I forgot to put in the expensive insoles).

The Nikes felt more comfortable.

Dear Mizunos,

I’m not giving up on you yet.

Anyone else have the running shoe dilemma?

4. I runfess…

31 Days of Skirt was pretty exhausting. I do take a lot of pictures and post to Instagram often but not everyday and not following certain clues.

Still it was fun to participate in this annual challenge but glad it’s ALMOST over LOL.

Did you participate in 31 days of skirt or any other similar challenge?

5.I runfess…

I was pretty proud that I had a training schedule for my first marathon. I actually planned to follow it.

But all I do is cross things out and re-write things.

That’s why, I rarely use a plan.

Anyone else have problem following a training plan?

Friday Five Runfessions for June

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I ran THREE races in ONE week.

I almost ran FOUR (I came to my senses and did a long run with friends instead).

Anyone else run more than one race in the same week?

2. I runfess…

I went to NYC for work and I DID NOT RUN in Central Park or along the East or Hudson Rivers.

I know. Can you believe it?

the rain even stopped and this route along the Hudson R. was very tempting…

I really wanted to run but instead I walked.  I knew that I should rest the legs.

walking the High Line and climbing to the top of the Vessel = rest??

Anyone skip your favorite run locales and REST instead?

3.I runfess…

I’ve been ignoring a hip issue since it doesn’t hurt while I run.

The pain started the first day that I played tennis in Florida (May 3). It has bothered me repeatedly when I play tennis, sit or stand for a long time and sometimes after a run.

I have several friends who have undergone hip replacements? Kinda makes me wonder…

As soon as I made an appt to see my chiro, the pain stopped…of course.

She said it was my SI joint, did some painful stuff to it and now it feels great!!

Anyone ignore pain when it doesn’t occur during a race or a run?

4. I runfess…

A co-worker (a really fast runner) said that her hubby ran NYC without training and really enjoyed it.

Not what I wanted to hear…

My NYC marathon training starts Monday…

I already have social plans being scheduled that will conflict with my weekend 14,12 & 15 mile long runs (Tennis weekend Aug 24-25, Mah Jongg weekend Sept 21-22, Broadway Oct 5-6).

Do you ever dread having a training plan to follow?

5.I runfess…

My healthy eating (if you can call it healthy) goes right out the window in the summertime.  Too many BBQs and outdoor restaurant dining

and

ICE CREAM!!

Good thing I don’t have a scale and can wear loose dresses to work.

Anyone else struggle with summer food temptations?

Runfessions for May

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

Boating season has started and there’s running and racing…I want it ALL! It’s a challenge on the weekend.  Fingers crossed for hubby’s tennis and the weather to coordinate with MY plans.

Ahhh…Lake George

Do you have other activities on the weekend that conflict with your running?

2. I runfess…

I have a red wine problem.  I never was much of a drinker. For awhile it was Reisling. Then it was nothing. Now it’s Red Wine (I mean I’ve read many articles about its health values LOL).

I didn’t used to drink the night before a race, of course.

But that has gone by the wayside too …with no ill effects I might add.

Any wine drinkers out there? Or other food/drink addictions?

3.I runfess…

I’ve long been an anti-stretch, anti-foam roller, anti-massage, anti-chiro kind of runner. But I’ve now been making monthly chiropractor visits even though nothing hurts.

Just in case…

Still haven’t bought a foam roller or gone for a massage yet….

The chiropractor was a big step for me.  My hubby even went to her and she cured his injured calf muscle and tennis elbow.

Do you see a chiropractor regularly?

4. I runfess…

I have already created my Marathon Training Plan (which starts July 1). It’s a variation on Hal Higdon’s for first-time marathoners.

those mid-week long runs will NOT happen no doubt but a girl can dream

Do you create training plans this far in advance?

5.I runfess…

Speaking of being type A, I am getting to register for a winter 2020 race. Many of the ones I’d like to run don’t fit into my schedule but I may sign up for:

Runfessions for April

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

a day late…

  • I runfess…

After I had pain in my calf, I decided to switch from Neutral shoes to Stability shoes.

Mizuno Wave Inspires for long runs

I bought both Mizunos and Brooks.

Brooks Ravenna for short runs

I planned on returning one pair (because I have a dozen Nikes…)

it was going to be the Brooks pair but Champ said “No, keep them.”

Do you have a running shoe obsession?

  • I runfess…

I signed up for the Freihofer Training Challenge “Advanced” group because I always run with the “advanced” group. I like the coach and I wanted someone to make me do the drills so I could run my 5ks faster.

However, I have not run with them once on Monday nights. That means I have not done any of the speed drills.

I have either done a short easy run with the Beginner group or with the Intermediate group.

Because…

either I was recovering from my leg injury or I had raced the weekend before.

Would you have done those drills since that was why you paid for the training?

  • I runfess…

I had long runs on my schedule to prepare for my April and May Half Marathons. But you know me. I’m racing obsessed.

My April consisted of two 5 mile races, a half marathon and a 15k race (today.)

Would you have chosen to race or go for your long run?

  • I runfess…

I really do think I can have faster finish times.  But somehow, I can’t get motivated to do anything to get faster.

Work..time..laziness…family and friends events.  I have all the excuses.

I did ALL my long runs for the first time ever before my Florida half marathon.

11.11 pace

My NYC Half finish time was more than 4 minutes faster (and I had not done the long runs) and my recent half marathon was more than 9 minutes faster (also with no long runs).

10:02 pace

Yes, I know that there are a lot of factors that influence whether or not your finish times improve.

But this is not motivating me to train harder.

Do you follow a plan? Are you serious about improving your finish times? When you put the work in, do your times show it?

5. I runfess…

Due to my injury and lack of training, my so-called goal for this last half marathon was just to finish pain-free.

Secretly, I was hoping to finish under 2:12…

Yup…I could now qualify for the 2020 NYC Half Marathon & NYC Marathon

Do you set time goals for your big races?
