Runfessions for December

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

and it’s the last one for 2020!!

1. I runfess…

I’ve passed by many of those small library boxes.  I always look to see if there’s a book that I want.  I have gone back to get some books.  But recently I saw two holidays DVDs.  I took them because I could just stuff them in my waist band and continue my run.

I mean it was “Love Actually” and a Reese Witherspoon movie

Have you ever done something so silly? What is your favorite holiday movie?

2. I runfess…

I’ve used Strava for a few 5k Virtual Races because NYRR/ Strava sponsored them.  I do not pause my watch when I tie my shoe, stop to walk or even take pictures.  So yes, the elapsed time is way slower than the moving time.  I know that if it were a real race, I could run as fast as (or hopefully faster than) the moving time. I don’t feel guilty.

3.I runfess…

I haven’t decided on my next half marathon but I had already registered (before the pandemic) to run a Feb. 14 one in Fort Lauderdale (with Cari).

But there was a Cyber Monday discount so I also registered for one the week before in Melbourne (where my Sister-in-law lives).

No, I don’t plan to run both. I may run neither.  Both races offer deferrals.  Hopefully I will run one and defer the other to 2022.

4. I runfess…

I ordered all my holiday presents myself. So I love them all. Running shoes, socks, lighted vest, turkey trot beanie & socks.

Do you prefer surprise gifts or do you like to pick out what you want?

5.I runfess…

I had a hard time getting in the holiday spirt with everything going on.  But I always make and send holiday photo cards.  So I did.

Do you still like to send and get “real” cards?

6.I runfess…

I said that I was over virtual races.  And I am. At least mostly (No more virtual half marathons!!)

But I already signed up for two virtual races – a free 5k on January 1.

NYRR Virtual Resolution Run 5K

and a 15k on January 30.  This one supports a great charity and has awesome swag (and blogger Kim is also running this one.)

Runfessions for November

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I get FOMO looking at those pictures of runners running at sunrise.  I am an early riser so I could do it too but I watch those beautiful reds and oranges in the sky while drinking a cup of coffee and scrolling through FB and IG.

Anyone else struggle to get out there to run in the early morning hours?

2. I runfess…

I searched all summer for my pink compression socks.  Now that it is too cold for skirts, I found them!! But wouldn’t you know it, now I can’t find my favorite buff and running shirt.

Do you misplace things or is it just me?

3.I runfess…

I have had a Strava account for years and never used it.  I finally did because the free virtual 5ks that signed up through NYRR asked you to post there.

I tried not to be embarrassed with how slow my pace was lol

Anyone else use Strava to record runs or interact with other runners?

4. I runfess…

I did not use my Garmin during my recent REAL half marathon but I missed it.  Not in the way, you think. It was so freeing to enjoy racing and not think about pace and finish time.

But I had NO stats.  I always look after a race at my pace for each mile.  And of course, overanalyze things.

Does anyone else obsess over their race stats?

5.I runfess…

My recent race made me realize how much I missed the atmosphere and runner connection at a real race even COVID-style. I did register for a 5K in NYC in a few weeks. I am, of course, hesitating to go due to the rise in the number of cases. I’m pretty sure that the race itself will be safe.  Other races have been held there but it’s all the other stuff to worry about.

So I am waiting until the last minute to decide (I can cancel my free hotel room until 6 pm the night before).

Runfessions for October

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I signed up for a series of 8 fall virtual 5k races. They were free and I thought that they would motivate to improve my pace and get more serious about running.

They did not.  I grew more disinterested with each one and my pace got slower and I walked more.

Obviously virtual races are not races in my eyes.

2. I runfess…

I also signed up for a virtual half marathon because it was ZOOMA race, the ZOOMA director bought Skirt Sports (I have been, as you know, a Skirt Sports ambassador for many years) and there was great swag.

I am so over paying for virtual races.  I feel bad for the racing companies and charities but no more!!

3.I runfess…

I’m struggling with the fact several of my running friends have become walking friends (and my consistent partner is wintering in Florida).  I know it’s selfish but I like company when I run.  And although there are no races, I still want to keep up with my long runs.

I miss the races we used to run together.

4. I runfess…

I want this pandemic to end so I can travel again.  I have a trip tentatively planned in February but Florida is a hot spot and even if there race happens, I wonder if my Florida friends will let me stay with them.

5.I runfess…

I’m pretty nervous about my upcoming “real” half marathon.  I forgot what it was like to race.  I’m pretty sure that it will my slowest one ever.  I don’t really care about that. I just hope it will be still fun and won’t taint my vision of racing.

Runfessions for September

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

I cannot believe that it is Fall.  Where did the summer go??

1. I runfess…

I signed up for a series of 8 fall virtual 5k races.  I don’t normally wear a watch but you have to post your times in order for it to count.

Instead of my Garmin, I used my Apple watch.

The problem is that I am so out of shape, that I stop and catch my breath every 30-45 sec (no exaggeration).

A bigger problem is that my watch may be on auto-pause. (actually sometimes it stops when I stop and then sometimes it does not. I never manually pause it.)

You get my drift?

2. I runfess…

I also signed up for another virtual 5k and 10k.

And I actually won my age group in each.

At least this time, the faster runners did not run the race so I don’t feel as guilty about my awards.

3.I runfess…

I intended to run last Saturday but three of my friends had decided to walk instead of run. I gladly joined them

4. I runfess…

I am very comfortable running intervals at 13-14 min pace.

30:30 intervals but so enjoyable to run slow and with friends

Though I know that if I raced, this would make me very unhappy.  But it doesn’t bother me enough to run alone and try to regain some of of former speed.

5.I runfess…

I’m an amateur biker… so amateur I’m not even sure that I use the gears correctly and….. I don’t have a helmet (I know, I know, I will get one soon!!)

Runfessions

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

I cannot believe that August is almost over.  Where did the summer go??

1. I runfess…

As soon as I finished the OneNY 1000k Challenge, I stopped looking at my walking mileage.  I have even shortened or skipped walks.

No surprise there.

Anyone only motivated when you have to log your miles?

2. I runfess…

As soon as my foot pain seemed to subside with Topos (3mm heel drop), I immediately bought another pair of Topos (0 mm heel drop).  My Neuroma pain completely disappeared.

I had planned to return the first pair. I did not.

Do you buy new shoes frequently? Do you return shoes or keep them?

3.I runfess…

As much as I LOVE racing, I don’t plan to run a race that that has all those COVID19 restrictions.  I mean no water, no food, wave starts, altered course, etc.

I’d rather wait and spend money on a real race…whenever that may be.

4. I runfess…

I planned to start biking but even before I brought my bike up from the basement, I ordered a biking skirt.

Clothes are important, right?

Anyone else agree that you need the right clothes for each sport?

5.I runfess…

I recently completed a hike that was on my bucket list.  But it seemed a lot shorter and easier than I anticipated.  The view was nice but not awesome.

Runfessions for July

Runfessions

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

Time flies in a pandemic.  This is my 4th pandemic Runfession post.

1. I runfess…

I have a high tolerance for pain.  I’ve raced with a stress fracture and a broken foot.

No surprise that that I waited several weeks before I went back to the podiatrist for my neuroma.

Do you seek medical attention right away or procrastinate? Have you gotten laser therapy for pain?

2. I runfess…

Once I experienced foot pain back in November, I ditched my favorite Mizunos and bought:

  • Altras (and returned them)
  • Brooks (and returned them)
  • Hokas (and returned them)
  • Another style of Hokas (for walking)
  • Back to Mizuno Inspires (for short runs)

And now I am trying Topos!!

Did you try different shoes or stick with one brand?

3.I runfess…

I thought I would continue with some virtual races.  For good reasons. Support the racing organization, charity, add to my swag collection or just to motivate myself to run faster.

4. I runfess…

We’re pretty good in Upstate NY with Covd-19 though there are still new cases.  I am considering running a race, any race.

I upped my goal in the NYS Challenge from 500k to 1000K because I would be done too early in the summer.

One NY Virtual Challenge - Race Across New York!

Then my foot started bothering me so I thought I should probably cut back on the walking, hiking running and maybe get my bike out.

Biking miles don’t count!!

And I am stubborn.  So back to walking, running and hiking until I am done with 1000k.

Runfessions for June

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I am impulsive.  Well, you knew that, right?

I upped my NYS Challenge distance from 500k to 1000K.

That means it’s 6 miles a day rather than 3!!

SIX miles… I only run 3 and not every day.  I walk a lot but once boating season gets in full swing, that’s ZERO miles when on a boat all day.

What was I thinking?

It’ll be a challenge.

This challenge will be good for me, I hope.

2. I runfess…

I really miss racing.

Once my September Half Marathon (Saratoga Palio) was cancelled, I got depressed.  My last half was in February (and I was injured).  Remember I was hoping to run 12 half marathons (one each month) this year.

And I am sick of virtual races.  I ran THREE virtual half marathons already.

So when I got an email announcing that the Adirondack Half Marathon was on (but with changes)…

Well, you know what happened.

I decided to take a refund for Palio and then signed up for Adirondack Half.

3.I runfess…

In the beginning, I whined and complained about being stuck in the house 8 to 4 – tied to my computer.

But as the weeks went on, I realized that I NEVER want to go back to my office.

Why?

I can wear running clothes ALL day. That means I get quickly sneak out for a run at lunch and be out the door in no time to run after work.

I am in no way running more miles (as you can see above) but what I am doing to getting in more steps because I am moving THREE times a day – before work, at lunch and after work.  I will either walk or hike if I do not run.

Does working from home help or hinder your running?

4. I runfess…

The downside for me regarding work during this pandemic is that I do not get to travel.

I miss running in different locations.  I miss my hotel points (to use for race-cations).

What do you miss if you are working from home?

5.I runfess…

I am enjoying my trails.  I wish I enjoyed my weekday runs that much.  I keep thinking that I should start running on the trails.

There’s a few problems.  First I am clumsy. Secondly the nearby ones are not long enough.  The longer ones I would have to drive to and it would be after work.

I think that I am just making excuses lol.

Runfessions for May

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I did not run at all on my birthday.  I usually run miles or kms to commemorate my new age but this was how I dressed that day:

Do you usually celebrate your birthday with a run?

2. I runfess…

Once I experienced foot pain back in November, I ditched my favorite Mizunos and bought:

  • Altras (and returned them)
  • Brooks (and returned them)
  • Hokas (and returned them)
  • Another style of Hokas (would return them but FF is closed)

and then ordered the same Mizuno Wave Inspires as I had originally. (15s on the left and 16s on the right)

Did you try different shoes only to return to your originals?

3.I runfess…

I pay attention to matching my clothes but otherwise I’m pretty lax about things.  I have even worn new items in a race.

During my April Virtual Half Marathon, I got blisters on my feet. I wore good socks but then I remembered the
Karrimor Anti Blister socks (bought on sale at EMS) that I have been wearing for long races even during my full marathon.

And so I started wearing them again. My feet still ached but NO blisters. D’uh.

Did you pay close attention to comfort or fashion when racing?

4. I runfess…

I lost a pair of my favorite compression calf sleeves 😦

I tracked them down to having worn them last August (the advantage of having a blog and posting lots of running pics.)

 

I wear them a lot in the summer because most of skirts have pink in them…grrrr

Maybe they’ll turn up. Stay tuned.

Do you lose or misplace running clothes items?

5.I runfess…

I’ve been running a lot of virtual races.  What else is there?

I only wear wear a watch when I run an actual race.  And since I don’t really consider them races and don’t actually “race” virtual ones, I haven’t been wearing a watch. To calculate distance I either run where I already know the distance or I start my Apple watch and run half the distance and turn it off at that point.

The problem is many of the companies that offer virtual races want you to post your finish time.

So what do I do?

I make up my time.  Since I do feel a little guilty, I post a very slow one (which actually may be accurate for the way I am running these days.)

Anyone else do this? Don’t report me to the racing Gods!

Pandemic Runfessions for April

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I have not worn clothes other than running clothes since I started working from home on March 17.  It’s not because they are comfortable. It’s because no one is seeing me and it saves time getting out the door to go for a walk or run.

I do worry that my work clothes may no longer fit.

Do you wear running clothes even when you are working from home?

2. I runfess…

I have spent a lot of time searching for new places to walk or run.  Usually I ran near wherever I was working.  Now working from home makes me want to leave the neighborhood as quick as possible and discover a different environment.

3.I runfess…

I never ran with a mask on.

I know you think I should have.  I always wore a buff around my neck and could have pulled it up if I felt I was dangerously close to someone else.  But I never felt that way.

4. I runfess…

I signed up for the Peleton app since it was free for 90 days.  And there were so many really great outdoor running workouts that I could do.  I went as far as pre-loading them.  But unfortunately, they still need an Internet connection and I do not  have unlimited data on my phone so I’ve only used them a few times and the shorter ones.  They would be a lot more useful for me if I had a treadmill.

5.I runfess…

I may be enjoying my walks more than my runs. I think it is because they are more scenic and I love taking pictures of nature. I am walking everyday at lunch but as I have mentioned, I am always dressed in running clothes and so I could be running at that time. It is so easy to lose that running mojo when you are not racing.

Is it just me? Are you still motivated to run when they are no races?

Runfessions for March

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I have finally graduated from PT and doctor appointments.(Perfect timing considering what is happening right now.)

So I have extra $$ for racing. LOL (if there were any happening…)

But I am slacking off on any of those exercises that I should be dong to strengthen my hips, calves, glutes, quads, etc.

Do you continue your PT prescribed exercises once you are healthy?

2. I runfess…

I broke up with my chiropractor. (and that was before she closed her practice…)

I started going for ART when I strained my calf and then I was going monthly for tune-ups but once my foot started hurting in November, I stopped. And now she is pregnant.

Do you regularly go to a chiropractor?

3.I runfess…

I have now registered for SEVEN half marathons for the year…. (if they were cancelled, I ran them virtually)

Now that my foot no longer hurts, I’m thinking about #8. Crazy, right?

Update:  My April Half has been postponed until August 29 so this one won’t have to happen.  Since I am running all my races (virtually), I am sticking with one half per month.  3 down…9 to go.  LOL

4. I runfess…

I almost registered for the Cherry Blossom 10 MiIer.

I have always wanted to run this race.  I didn’t enter the lottery but I found out that so many runners offer bib transfers. Flights were cheap. It was tempting but I only worked two days at the Bar Exam instead of three.  That meant I lost my extra $$$ plus Bermuda was expensive.

(Turns out it didn’t matter because the race was cancelled.)

Next year…Perhaps?

5.I runfess…

I did not register for the 2020 NYC Marathon because at the time I was still experiencing foot pain. I wasn’t sure if it would ever go away. I did not want to run 26.2 miles like that. It was hard enough without foot pain.

But when only 2% of those who entered the lottery got in, I felt guilty that I had a timed entry (from Helderberg to Hudson Half 2019) and I did not register.

The race was cancelled after Hurricane Sandy so technically 2021 is the 50th running of the race.

So maybe next year… (If that foot pain stays away and I can get back to running at a decent pace or I get in by the lottery.)
