FFF: Highlights of the Olympic Trials

Schedule and Results: 2021 US Olympic Track and Field Trials - LetsRun.com

Believe it or not, when the Olympics are on TV, I prefer to watch gymnastics and swimming.

But this year, as a runner, I decided to watch the track events on the Olympic Trials. (Even you go to bed early, you could have watched them all on YouTube.)

And they sure did not disappoint.

Now I am even more excited for the Olympics.

Revised) Tokyo 2020 Olympic Timetable for Track & Field, and the 400-200 Double

Here are some of the things that stood out for me:

1. The Heat.

Yikes. 100 degrees temps. Many events postponed to earlier when the temps were cooler.

Competitor Faints At Olympic Trials Due To Extreme Heat | The Daily Caller

However, the women’s 5000m final did go off in 94 degree heat.

Um, 50 degrees is my ideal temp for running.

Kudos to those runners for running in these temps and doing so well.

2. Longevity

Allyson Felix made her fifth Olympics team. What an amazing career she has had (and two kids along the way.)

She is an inspiring woman runner.  Will she retire or go for #6?

3. New Roles

Former 2008 and 2021 Olympian, Kara Goucher did not compete but instead she was a commentator for NBC.

Kara Goucher won't race U.S. Olympic Trials, report says - OlympicTalk | NBC Sports

And she was great. I really enjoyed her intelligent and knowledgeable remarks.

4. Good/Bad

The Good: Abby Cooper ran the Olympic Standard in 5000m in her comeback (Remember her 2016 collision and subsequent knee surgery.)
The Bad: The next day Abby only came in 4th and does not get an Olympic berth in the 5000m.

5. Sad News.

Sha’Carri Richardson won the 100m.

Then she failed a drug test (for marijuana) and will not be able to compete in the Olympics.

One extra – Fashion:

Emily Sisson had to drop out of the Marathon trials but redeemed herself winning the 10,000m wearing a pair of her husband’s Goodrs. (My favorite sunglasses).

Christina Clemons made her first Olympic team in the 100m Hurdles and wore a pair of Doritos earrings. (I like Doritos too)

Firecracker 4 Race Recap

              July 4, 2021 9:00 am

Most of my weekend running friends usually run this race.

if you read my weekly run downs, you may recognize a few of these runners

I never have joined them because it’s always hot, the race is crowded and I’d prefer to head up to the lake early.

For some reason, when I went to Fleet Feet to pick up new shoes, they offered a $5 discount for the race and $5 coupon for the store.

I’m a sucker for discounts and I signed up!! I also have not run in Saratoga in a while and I’ve always enjoyed running there.

I was hoping that some of my running friends would sign up too but if not, I knew there would be many others there who I knew.

Then I had to break it to my hubby as it would interfere with our lake plans.

pic from 2018

It wasn’t exactly boating weather so he was cool with me racing.

Pre-Race Activities and Preparations:

It was fun to plan a patriotic race outfit (and hope it stayed warm and dry.)

red white and blue tank, skirt and socks

To save time on race day, I picked up my race packet at Fleet Feet on Thursday before my evening trail run.

The weather during week preceding the race was crazy – oppressive heat and humidity and then rain rain rain rain. Who knew what race day would bring? The forecast was for cool and rainy….

It was weird to run on a Sunday instead of a Saturday and to not do a weekend long run.

I actually walked on Saturday while my friends ran

The only constant was pizza the night before the race lol.

Race Day:

My last race was also a 4 miler (I won my AG and had a PR).

But this race was going to be more crowded, more competitive, and hillier.  I was only planning to enjoy running with others and the excitement of a live in-person race. No finish time and award goals at all!!

I ate my usual oatmeal and coffee breakfast. Thankfully, the heat wave had ended (and hopefully all the rain).

I planned to leave early because I had no idea where to park. But my friend Heidi offered to meet me and drive us.  She wanted to leave from Leah’s Cakery (4 exits before the race) at 8:10 am. Of course, if you know me, I like to get to races early. I was planning on being at the race by 7:45!! But I agreed and hoped that we would not be sprinting to the start line.

It was raining lightly on my way to meet Heidi. But she was right.  We easily found parking on the street and arrived in plenty of time for the 9 am race.

We walked toward the start…

We passed the finish line and made plans to meet there after the race.

Then of course, we took our obligatory pre-race photo.

glad that I wore a tank since it was quite humid. Those DIY arm sleeves did not last on long.

And then we mozied on down to the start area. It was cool to see how creatively everyone was dressed for this July 4th holiday race.

Although the race director had hoped to get at least 3000 runners, there were only about 2000. Still it was my largest post pandemic race. And the first one without anyone wearing a mask or social distancing rules  enforced. There was not even a staggered start.

Everyone just lined up together. There was so much excitement in the air. Live racing rocks!!

Heidi headed toward the back since she was recovering form an injury and running slower. I stayed toward the front and chatted with some runners that I knew.

As I mentioned, I had NEVER run this race so I was planning on going with the flow.  The only thing I remembered hearing was that there was a BIG hill during mile 4.

course map

elevation according to my Garmin

Mile 1:

As I mentioned, this was a crowded race. The bottleneck at the beginning slowed me down which was probably a good thing as I always start out too fast.

We began running down Broadway which was a slight downhill but eventually we did hit a hill before we turned left and ran past Congress Park.

It seemed like everyone was passing me by but when I glanced at my watch, it showed that my pace was under 9 minutes!!

Mile 2:

I was surrounded by runners the whole race. Several times I bumped into runners or they bumped into me.  Maybe I forgot what it was like to run a big race.

As we ran through neighborhoods, spectators enthusiastically cheered us on. One group sprayed us with a hose. I wasn’t super hot but it was humid and so it felt good.

There was a water stop and I did stop at it. They gave you a bottle of water. I and most runners, drank a little and then threw the bottle away. Volunteers had to spill out the water from each bottle. Such a waste but hey at least we didn’t have to carry our own water.

mile 2- never saw that photographer

but at least I WAS running lol

Mile 3:

We ran into a few rolling hills during this mile but none too bad. There were many different groups playing music. That was a nice distraction.

Saratoga is such a pretty town. I enjoyed running through its streets.

I was surprised that there was a second water stop since the race was only 4 miles. I did appreciate it and I took a bottle of water again. This time I walked longer. I felt a little dizzy and so I took a Gu (not for hunger but for the electrolytes.)

Mile 4:

I was warned about the steep hill in the last mile. And it did not disappoint. I was wishfully thinking that I could run up the whole thing.

Nope! I had to walk at least twice.

The best part was the ice pops that were handed out. I ate one as I continued to run up the hill very slowly.

Finally I spotted that big American flag which meant we were approaching the finish line.

I sprinted as fast as I could at this point. I saw 36:xx on the clock as I crossed the finish line and was pleasantly surprised.

I do remember trying to beat the guy with the stroller. Did I stop my watch too soon??

Done!!!

Post Race:

I immediately went to grab a bottle of water. The only refreshments were bananas and so I grabbed one and ate it while I was waiting for Heidi to finish.

I really enjoyed watching so many of the runners finish, especially those that I knew. I also got to admire all the patriotic outfits.

I chatted with a Holly, a runner that I used to race with all the time. (She ran the race but is suffering from a congenital blood disorder 😦 )

Eventually Heidi did arrive and she did much better than she hoped as well.

I checked the website to see if I won an age group award. Nope. 4th.  Not disappointed at all. In fact I beat Carolyn for the first time EVER in a race.

It was now starting to rain so we headed toward the car.

We decided to have brunch back at Leah’s where I left my car.  But it was closed for the 4th. Plan B was Lakeside Farms and a scrumptious lunch!!

On the way home I was feeling a little energetic or so I thought. I stopped at the Zim Smith bike path to see how many more miles my legs could still go.

The sun came out and my legs protested so I quit.

Additional Race Reflections:

I didn’t expect to enjoy this race as much as I did.  I also didn’t think I could run as well as I did.

I felt that I could have done better if I didn’t walk as much(but I always say that AFTER the race.)

But probably the most important factor was the weather.  Not much sun, a misty rain on and off and temps in the 60s.  Pretty perfect for running on a July 4th.

Positives:

  • Ample parking (parking garage and street parking)
  • Well marked course.
  • Lots of familiar faces.
  • Interesting course.
  • Friendly volunteers.
  • Music entertainment along the course.
  • Volunteers calling out times at each mile.
  • Enthusiastic spectators (sprinklers and ice pops)
  • Easy and organized packet pick-up on Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun.
  • Real restrooms before and after and ample number of port-potties
  • Two water stops for a 4 mile race.
  • Free photos.
  • Awards (3 deep) for 5 year age group awards
  • Weather (not as hot as earlier in the week and fairly dry)
  • A real race.

Negatives:

  • Bottled water at the water stops (COVD safe but most was wasted)
  • Post-race refreshments (again COVID safe – but just bananas)
  • Steep hill at mile 4

Would I recommend this race?

Yes. Yes. Yes. I loved it.  I hope that I can make it work and run it again another year.

Final Stats:

It was a 12 second PR!!!!!!!!! And the course was longer and hillier than the Rabbit Ramble.

As you can see below, I’m still the Queen of the Positive Splits.

At least my pace was more consistent than the last race.

2 waterstop walks and two hill walks.

Weekly Run Down for 7.5.21-7.11.21: Back in the Office

As I mentioned last week, we are now expected to work in the office at least three days a week.   I am not a happy camper….

But due to a day off, I only worked in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday.

It was very strange and really impacted my running and other stuff but it is what is is.

28+ Funny Memes About Going Back To Work After Vacation - Factory Memes

Last Week:

  • Monday – I had taken the day off so I could participate in the Lake George Hike-a-thon. Since my hubby does not enjoy hiking and had to work, my friend subbed in.

I registered early and chose one of my favorite trails – The Pinnacle.

There were 22 sites and over 700 participants. Our hike started at 10 am and it was just a mile to the top. Then we had to wait until 11:19 for a helicopter to fly over and take our photo.

photo: Carl Heilman

There was a reception afterward and then we into town, got lunch and my hubby took us out on the boat.

we hung around in Log Bay (top) and Red Rock Bay (bottom) and also rode around the lake

We got so lucky – it was the most perfect weather of the summer.

  • Tuesday – My first day back at the office.  It was hard to remember how to dress and what to do in the morning to get ready.

Again this week, weather was an issue. With the threat of rain/thunderstorms, I was hoping that I could motivate myself to get up very early and run…NOPE!!

I did go for a HOT HUMID BUGGY walk at lunch (since my mid-day runs could no longer occur) and then it rained most of the afternoon.

I planned to meet my friends for our usual Tuesday after work walk on the rail trail but they decided to bail due to the threat of thunderstorms.

I decided to risk it and go on my own.  It never rained and the sun even came out. Unfortunately, the earlier rain did nothing to lower the humidity. But I actually felt too energetic to walk and so I ran.

I was overdressed for running since I planned to walk… and that cat followed me for about 1/4 mile. If a black cat brings bad luck, des a white one bring good luck?

Today’s Nugget (from Ali on the Run podcast interview with Sarah Lesko from Oiselle): “I have my own running goals but the most important goal is to support other people.”  Some days I have felt that way with my friends.

Wednesday – SOAR run or Ice Cream run??? Tough decision. With thunderstorms in the forecast, I DID get up for a short run.

Yesterday I felt so lethargic at work and after I went for a run in the evening, I felt so much better. So I decided to run before work to see if it gave me more energy at work.

I didn’t getup as early as I should have and it was already warm and humid but I realized that I need to do this more often.

Today’s Nugget (from Ali on the Run podcast interview with Sarah Lesko from Oiselle cont.): “The moment the negative stuff is taking up too much head space, it’s time to make a change.”  Yup with running and life.

Again I walked at lunch. I avoided the buggy nature path and just walked around the outdoor mall.

these lunch walks are getting expensive. but don’t you love when the flowers match your drink

And after work, I decided on the Ice Cream run.  Not for the ice cream but for the location. The SOAR run was going to be at the Crossings where I will be running on Mondays so I’d rather go someplace different. In this case – Five Rivers Environmental Center.

As happened on Tuesday, there were afternoon rain/thunderstorms. They stopped but there still was a threat of rain. As a result, only 4 of us braved the weather for this run…actually a trail run. Although the skies were dark and there was thunder in the distance, we managed to stay dry.  The downside was that the other runners run trails fast. As I attempted to keep up, I wound up falling. Nothing serious other than some bruises, a cut on the ankle and mud on me everywhere.  The scariest part was that when I fell, my phone fell out of my pocket. I had to go back and I did find it!!! Phew.  Remind me never to enter a trail race…

this is what the park looks like a sunny day

We did get ice cream after and the skies opened up as we were eating it. Perfect timing!!

  • Thursday – Back working from home today …so happy.  Unfortunately the weather Gods were mad at me. It rained all morning on and off. I wanted to run during an early lunch….if it weren’t for the RAIN.

Finally I decided to get in my car and go for it (since there was a possibility that the evening run would be canceled.)  It was only drizzling when I started but then it started to pour.

Yes, I got wet but I didn’t melt.

Today’s Nugget (from Ali on the Run podcast interview with Sarah Lesko from Oiselle cont.): “A third of my weekly running miles are walking. And my running is getting better and faster.  I count them both the same. The only downside is that walking takes longer.”  Hmmm. I do not count my walking miles.  Maybe I should?

And my favorite run of the week was tonight’s evening group trail run. The location was Peebles Island.

I went last week and got rained on.  So I had no excuse not to go tonight. So off I went hoping that some of my friends would be there to share the misery fun. Well, it rained before and after but not a drop during. Got lucky again!

Another fun evening with new and old friends – some running but mostly walking so I didn’t fall

  • Friday – Finally scheduled rest day. The forecast AGAIN was for rain. Still at lunchtime, it hadn’t started yet. So I headed to a nearby trail for a walk.

sooo muddy. the top left is not the creek but the path!

  • Saturday – Back to a long run with my peeps.  It was great to have company for part of my 8 miles on the Nisky Bike Path. The temps were not really warm but boy was it humid.

Afterward we all gathered for brunch. I am so lucky to be part of this group.

Recovery was getting my nails done, doing grocery shopping, laundry and weeding. I think my recovery activities were more tiring than the run lol

  • Sunday – Boating or hiking or both or neither? All weather dependent but most likely since my hubby has an AM tennis match, I will go hiking early and see if the rain stays away for the afternoon.

And I was correct, I did decide on hiking and spent a lovely day on the trails and beyond before the rain came.

First I hiked to the gazebo at Pilot Knob (on the opposite side of Lake George from Mondays hike).  Then I continued to the waterfall (which I had visited last fall but at that time, there was no water.)  I was glad to have gone early because it was very crowded when I was done.

Since I had driven over an hour, I decided to stay for awhile. I did a short walk around Edgecomb Pond and then headed to Bolton Landing (where we keep our boat.) No boating today but I walked around town admiring all the flowers

especially the waterlilies at the Sagamore Hotel.

Eventually  it did rain but not until I was almost home.

FFF: Trail Running

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I am clumsy. I have fallen when running on the road and have fallen even during races.

check out the blood streaming down my leg

So who would have guessed that this summer, I am running on trails.

Obviously after only a few trail runs, I am not an expert but here are FIVE of my tips to help you enjoy your time running on the trails:

1. Wear Proper Running Shoes.

You can run with normal running shoes but wearing shoes made for trail running will give you more grip on the uneven rocky or muddy ground. It will also give you peace of mind.

we got muddy but no one fell

2. Use Bug Spray/Tick Repellent.

Yes, trails especially in the summertime are buggy.  I even spray insect repellent on my clothes. I also wear compression calf sleeves to protect my legs from ticks.

sweaty but smiling because we had no bug bites

3. Never Run Alone.

Because on the trails there is a  greater possibility of either getting lost or falling, I think it is always best to run with a buddy. If you are alone (or get separated from your friend), make sure you have a charged cell phone with you!

hanging with my buddy Deirdre at Lawson Lake

4. Run on Different Trails.

Even running on the SAME trails can get boring.  If you are not fortunate to be part of group-organized trail runs, explore the Internet and the AllTrails app to find trails within driving distance of where you live or work.  You’ll be surprised at how many hidden treasures you’ll discover.

at Five Rivers minutes from where I live

5. Slow Down and Enjoy the Scenery

In other words, look around. Listen to the different sounds. Don’t miss a distant lake or not stop at an overlook.  Trail running definitely gives you the opportunity to appreciate nature more. It’s ok to walk. It’s not the time to work on speed. I recommend not even wearing a watch!!

stopping an an overlook in Thacher Park

enjoying the trails at Indian Ladder Farms

Happy Running! Do run on trails? If so, any other tips?  Please share.

TT: Hiking 2021 – Mid-Year Update

Photo by Nina Uhlu00edkovu00e1 on Pexels.com

Once the Pandemic hit in March 2020, I knew that running 30 or more races including one half marathon each month would not likely happen.

I planned to continue to run hoping that the Pandemic would end but just in case, I knew that I needed an additional goal to stay active. Since I was working from home with no travel plans, I would have extra time.

In April, I decided that in addition to running, I would visit 25 trails in my area.

Before 2020, I had NO idea how many nearby opportunities there were for hiking. I wound up enjoying my trail walks, both solo and with friends, even more than my runs.

So I made the effort to visit as many trails each week as I had time for. Both after work and on weekends. By June, I changed my goal to 50 trails and to also re-visit the ones I liked and in different seasons.

And at the end of 2020, I had visited 72 different trails!!!!

2021 began and the Pandemic continued.  And even when things started opening up and races being held, I vowed to continue my hiking adventures. No goals other than re-visit trails that I enjoyed plus discover some new ones.

So here’s a list of the NEW trails that I have visited so far in 2021:

  1. Indian Kill Preserve
  2. Burden Pond Preserve  (2)
  3. Sanders Preserve
  4. Plotterkill Preserve  (2)
  5. Secret Woods Preserve (Ft Lauderdale, FL)
  6. Grafton State Park
  7. Ooms Conservation Area
  8. Hand Hollow Conservation Area
  9. BeeBe Hill Forest Trails
  10. Cohoes Falls Trail (Waterford)
  11. Owen D. Young Nature Trails
  12. Wintergreen Park
  13. Buttermilk (Yatesville) Falls (Montgomery Cnty)
  14. Paint Mine Trail (Thacher Park)
  15. Escarpment Trail (Thacher Park)
  16. Barbersville Falls Ridge Trail (2)
  17. Barbersville Falls – Creek Trail
  18. Ferncliff Forest Fire Tower
  19. Poet’s Walk
  20. Myakka State Park (Sarasota, FL)
  21. Falling Waters Preserve
  22. Saugerties Lighthouse Trail
  23. Postenkill Gorge Trail
  24. Dionondahowa Falls
  25. Hudson Crossings Park Trails
  26. Kaaterskill Rail Trail
  27. Kaaterskill Falls (lower falls)
  28. Kaaterskill Escarpment Trail
  29. Lawson Lake Trail
  30. Indian Ladder Farms Trail
  31. The Pinnacle

GRAND TOTAL = 31

That doesn’t count the times that I have re-visited many of the trails.

You may have noticed that Hiking Sunday has been replaced by Boating Sunday.

But don’t worry. I have discovered a new love. And there are so many more places that I have not hiked yet.

And I’ll be back out there come Fall.

Weekly Run Down for 6.28.21-7.4.21: The Last Week

Sounds like The Last Supper.

But starting next week, I will have to go back to the office at least three days a week until September when I will in the office everyday!!

So I needed to enjoy every moment at home this past week. Runs, Hikes, Bikes, Walks….

Last Week:

  • Monday – Since I knew I could not walk with my friends after work tomorrow, I wanted to today (maintaining weekly contact with my friends is one of my priorities.) So I decided to run before work. And since the heat wave continued, it was a great idea.

I do not enjoy running in my neighborhood but I got it done. It was a sweatfest and I should have gone out even earlier.

Today’s Nugget (from an AMR podcast):  If you are using a training plan that schedules your runs by time (rather than distance), on the weekend, do your runs by distance so that if you are a slower runner, you will feel better prepared for the race.

I did meet my friends after work but boy was it hot and humid!!! (I shouldn’t complain because it is even worse out West.) So happy to have done my run in the morning.

  • Tuesday – A scheduled rest day.  As I said last week, I am trying (while I’m at home) to make my rest days more active. Another HOT one. So I rode my bike at lunch since it was a little cooler than walking.

a short ride because it was hot hot hot

Then I went for a walk after my hair appt (between thunderstorms) and before grocery shopping (Yup, a LONG day!)

This park has quite a few nice paths and I would have stayed longer if I weren’t getting attacked by bugs and the sun was not going down.

  • Wednesday – I decided to get up early and run before the heat and storms arrived. It was still brutal outside and I forgot my hat!! Due to time restraints, I had to run in my neighborhood again but took a different route.

thumbs up for the flowers but thumbs down to the humidity

Today’s Nugget (from an AMR podcast):  Nada. The topic was Summer Reading. I did get a few good tips on books to read.

You may remember that on Wednesday evenings, the Ice Cream group run is scheduled. I ran early just in case it was cancelled due to a storm. It was going to held at a nearby trail (HollyHock Preserve).

Storms all evening = NO RUN! NO ICE CREAM!

  • Thursday – More rain in the forecast. It’s been tricky with the heat and the storms to have any kind of running schedule.

Again, I jumped outdoors before work to squeeze in my run (just in case the evening trail run was cancelled.) At least today the temps were a little cooler but I still struggled with the humidity. Where is the rain when you need it? (It started after I got home.)

Today’s Nugget (from an Ali on the Run podcast): An interview with a runner who is a commercial truck driver – away 5 days, 4 nights each week, working 14 hour days AND she is still able to run.  I’ll stop complaining about my job now ….

After work, I stopped by Fleet Feet to pickup my bib (and my friend Heidi’s) for Sunday’s race.

I wasted some time in Trader Joe’s before heading to the weekly group trail run.  Fingers crossed that it was not a repeat of Wednesday night.

The location of the run was Six Mile Waterworks park which is a combination of roads, grass and trails.

It was POURING!!! I was tempted to bail and a few of my friends did but I was nearby already. Yup, I went, I got very wet but we ran/walked and it was actually a lot of fun.

it rained very hard for most of the run but it did let up and I’m glad that I went.

Afterward we went out for ice cream. Redemption for the ice cream run the night before being canceled.

  • Friday – More rain in the forecast and finally cooler temps. I didn’t plan to run but my runs have been very very slow and easy and I had no plans to run on Saturday.

So I checked the forecast and it appeared that it wasn’t going to rain until later in the day. WRONG!  So I could have run before work but I didn’t. And then it started raining around 11 am. I waited and waited but it did not stop!! Until 4 pm. Grrr…

I did get my run done…

It was sooooooo humid. I wished that I had run in the rain.

Then I had to rush home in order to get ready to go out to dinner with friends and then play mah jongg.

Yup. Long day!

  • Saturday – Crazy weather. Earlier in the week it was at least 100 degree heat index and today the temps were in the 60s.

The forecasted rain never came but it was humid. I did walk at the Crossings while my friends ran. It was strange not to be worrying about doing a long run. Afterward we all walked around the farmer’s market and then we enjoyed a delicious brunch at our favorite restaurant (which now has a new location.)

The rest of the day was spent on kitchen remodeling shopping.  So hard!!!

  • Sunday – Race Day. Firecracker 4. A very popular race but my first time running it. It was the largest race that I have run since the Pandemic (though not as large as this race usually is).  I always have fun running races and this was no exception. I even ran a PR (shocker!)

I carpooled with my friend Heidi, caught up with many running friends that I’ve not seen (due to the Pandemic) and afterward Heidi and I went out to lunch (There’s always food involved.)

After lunch, I had thought that I had enough energy to add more miles so this would count as a long run.  Nope!!

some slogging miles on the Zim Smith bike path

The hubby and I decided not to go up to the lake today. In stead some gardening and fireworks at our local park.

This Coming Week on the Run–

  • Monday – DAY OFF – hike
  • Tuesday – run, walk with friends
  • Wednesday – SOAR run
  • Thursday – ARE Trail Run (with friends)

FFF: Ultimate Coffee Date for July ’21

It’s that time of the month…

time to join up with Coco & Deborah
for their ultimate coffee date.

I am very excited to go boating again on Lake George. If only the weather would be consistently warm on the weekends.

1. Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I start working in the office next week. BOO!!

I need to wear nice clothes, jewelry and make up, pack a lunch and bring the appropriate clothes (and snack) to run after work.

2.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I have NO races on my schedule this summer.

Very strange. I even ran several races during the Pandemic and many many virtual ones.

Since we now CAN race, I have no desire to do a virtual one.

(Late update: I lied. On a whim, I recently registered for a race this coming weekend.)

3.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I have been a Skirt Sports ambassador since the beginning. Last year they merged with ZOOMA. Now they have added Momentum jewelry. So now I represent all three brands.

4.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I’ve been consistently running 10 miles each weekend until I have not…

I started to slack off in May when I was in Florida.  Once you stop, it’s so easy not to continue. So in June, I haven’t as well.

only 4 miles!!

Until my friends and I have a half marathon to train for, I just may run less….

5.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that although I will going back to the office for work next week, I do not know when I will be travelling again. I miss running in different locations. I miss my hotel points!!!

I think this was my last NYC run, I mean work trip (Jan 2020)

Happy Running! What’s new with you?  Please share.

TT: Mid-Year Review 2021

Since today is Tuesday, I’m linking up with Zenaida and Kim (Kooky Runner).

My topic, as it is the end of June, is a Mid-Year Review.

I decided to look back at my WORD for 2021 (RESILIENCE) and see how I’ve progressed.

Here’s are the things that I wanted to work on in 2021:

  • Prioritize relationships.

Sometimes it feels easier to run alone but being with others can help you get back on track. However, try to surround yourself with those who either share your goals or support you on your own running journey. These relationships also include your VIRTUAL running friends!

Y – As much as possible, I have tried to run with others.

long run Saturdays

and join other running bloggers!

  • Join a group.

As I said above, it’s often easier to just run by yourself on your own schedule. I am fortunate that my area already has many running groups formed.  You just have to join them on their runs. Virtual groups count as well!

Y – In addition to my running friends, I have participated in SOAR group runs, Ice Cream group runs and ARE Trail group runs.

Summer Trail Run Series each Thursday evening

obviously an ice cream group (every Wednesday evening)

  • Take care of your body.

Proper nutrition, ample sleep, hydration, and regular exercise can strengthen your body and help you adapt to anything life throws at you.

Y/N – To some, I may not eat healthy or get enough sleep.  I do not stretch or foam roll but I do walk, hike and run regularly. That’s something 🙂

Hiking Sundays

but I do have a big weakness for ice cream

  • Practice mindfulness.

Journaling, yoga, prayer, or meditation can help. And when you do any of these activities, remember to focus on the positive aspects of your life and remember the things you’re grateful for.

Y/N – The closest I get to it is during my solo hikes in nature settings.

climbing those fire towers

loving my waterfalls

  • Avoid negative outlets.

In stressful times, you may often turn to overeating, alcohol or even over-exercising.  You may feel better but it’s like “putting a bandage on a deep wound.” Find ways to manage your stress in healthy ways.

Y – I admit that an occasional ice cream cone or a glass of red wine does make me feel better. But running/racing or hiking with friends has been my regular stress-reliever.

even in the rain, it was great to race and be with friends

fun times on the trails

  • Help others.

Whether you volunteer or simply support a friend in need, you will gain a sense of purpose and self-worth. Again I feel fortunate that there are many local opportunities to volunteer as a runner: being a mentor with the Frehofer Run training group, or with STEM or with GOTR. You can also informally mentor/help your running friends.

NA – Due to COVID, not many official volunteer activities. Informally, I run and walk with friends so hopefully that is helpful to them. I hope to start volunteering with STEM at the end of the summer.

does bringing your running friend her favorite macarons count?

  • Be proactive.

In other words, acknowledge and accept your past (unhappy) situations. But more importantly, take initiative in recognizing the strengths that you possessed and the successes you achieved during those difficult times. This will increase the likelihood that you’ll rise up again if you happen upon painful times.

Y – Not many races happened in 2020 and had to run them virtually (including 6 virtual half marathons.) I have actively signed up for many races so far this year. In fact I have already run 7 races (including two half marathons).

  • Move toward your goals.

You need to set realistic goals in addition to a BIGGER (possibly unachievable) goal. This goal should be something that you can do regularly. Even if it seems like a small accomplishment, it can enable you to move toward the bigger goal that you want to accomplish.  Your big goal may seem unreachable but it can help to focus on smaller tasks or activities related to that goal.

Y/N – In 2019, my goal was to run a full marathon and in 2020 to complete twelve half marathons (one each month). In 2021, not knowing when the Pandemic would end, I did not set any lofty goals. If anything, it would be to keep running and to reach 1000 miles for the year.

I signed up for this challenge and I log all my runs here!

I had hoped to have completed 500 miles at this point. But I’m behind (484.5).  Maybe I’ll catch up by the end of the year.  Maybe not….

  • Look for opportunities for self-discovery.

Runners can find that they have grown in some respect as a result of having faced adversity. Maybe by running fewer miles, they have fewer injuries. Maybe by not running any races, they have improved their form or pace. Maybe by not worrying about speed, they have added endurance.

Y/N – I had hoped to improve as a runner in 2021, as well. Not sure that has happened YET. Even after many years of running, I am still trying discover what I am good at. lol

first 5k in a long time (with no speedwork to prepare)…so no PR but much faster than expected.

a 4 mile PR!!! Maybe I can run fast again??

  • Keep things in perspective.

“How you think can play a significant part in how you feel.” Try to be a “glass half full” or optimistic kind of runner. It’s not the end of the world if you never PR again or you do not qualify for a prestigious race or you do not win any age group awards. Focus on what you CAN do.

Y – I have tried but it has not been easy as I tend to be a competitive  person by nature.

Racing up a mountain? I CAN do that.

  • Accept change.

Accept that change is a part of life. As runners get older, they get slower. This is often hard to accept but it’s a fact.  After a year of not racing, our finish times may have declined at an even faster rate. And even when in-person races return, they will probably be different.

Y – I have run many races with staggered starts, mask mandates, no water stops or post race refreshments or age group awards.  However, racing with restrictions is better than not racing at all.

maybe a PW due to the heat and humidity but I finished with a smile

  • Maintain a hopeful outlook.

Expect that good things will happen to you in 2021. Visualize what you want, rather than worrying about what you fear.

Y – I may be afraid to run on trails. Instead I continue to walk on them and attempt longer and more difficult hikes.  My reason for visiting the trails is for the views. In other words, I have had to get out of my comfort zone from time to time.

sometimes you have to take risks in order to get pictures of waterfalls…

or climb to the top of very high fire towers to see an amazing view…

  • Learn from your past.

What did last year’s negative experiences teach you?  What strengths did you discover that helped you deal? Use them to make this year your best running year ever. (Best does not have to mean fastest, most races, most PRs, most awards.)

Y – I learned that consistently is key. I thought that I would only be motivated run if there were races and yet in 2020, I ran over 1000 miles with very few races on my schedule. I started out this year well (even in the coldest temps).

long runs (10 miles) each weekend no matter what the weather

Weekly Run Down for 6.21.21-6.27.21: Summer has officially arrived…

We’ve already had some 90 degree days but the longest day came and went this past week. It is now officially Summertime!

Of course that can also mean crazy weather. 90 degrees one day, 60 the next….

I plan to enjoy those extra hours of daylight each evening (with lots of walks, runs, hikes) as the days will be getting shorter. Sigh.

Last Week:

  • Monday – Well, I finally decided to run before work since it was going to be very hot and humid and I was still working from home. It was already hot but glad that I did it. Someone recommended listening to Tina Muir’s Running for Real podcast. It was a nice diversion to be listening to someone who was also running at the same time.  I think prefer my other podcasters because I like to take my mind off my run (if that makes sense).

My new tanks says: ew, running but I really felt ew, humidity.

Today’s Nugget (from Running for Real podcast: We say “We don’t have time.” Not true. The real reason for not doing something (running, working out, seeing friends, etc.) is that our priorities are not there.

I am definitely guilty of giving that excuse. We all can make time for exercise and our friends if we feel that it is important. But we all have different priorities. If going to the gym is a priority that you re-arrange things and make time for it. If running with a friend is a priority then you again, you make it happen.

After dinner, I went for a walk with my BFF. We had planned to walk outside but with the intense heat and thunderstorm threat, we chose the mall. Unfortunately, COVID hours are in place so it closes at 7 pm. You can still walk (even though stores are closed) but it got hot and stuffy so we did finally go outside.

  • Tuesday – I woke up to needed rain (and it continued to rain all day) but it didn’t bother me since it was a rest day. I was happy that it did stop by 5 pm so I could walk with friends after work.  What a difference between today (in the 60s) and yesterday (90 and humid).

perfect temps for a long walk on the rail trail.

  • Wednesday – Wednesday evenings I have two choices for group runs – SOAR (womens only run) and an Ice Cream run.

The ice cream run met at Six Mile Waterworks (part road and part trail around a lake) followed by a visit to Coldstone creamery.

Surprisingly I decided to attend the SOAR group run.  I prefer local ice cream shops (not chains) and SOAR is every other Wednesday so I can do the ice cream run next week (and Six Mile Waterworks is the group trail run location for next week, as well).

We met at the Corning bike path and I ran 3 miles with a variety of women. Running with others is so much more enjoyable than running alone. I met new runners and my pace was faster than usual. Win. Win.

and I made it my own ice cream run lol

  • Thursday – My favorite night of the week: Summer Trail Run Series (STRS).  I met up with new and old friends and explored a new location. We ran around Indian Ladder Farms (famous for its cider donuts in the fall) … so fun!  Indian Ladder Farms also has a brewery so we all stayed after the run for a drink and snack.

another beautiful trail…that is strawberry rhubarb hard cider

  • Friday – Rest Day.  I decided today that I would at least be active. I walked before work. I had hoped to bike at lunch and then hike after work but neither of those things happened.

just admiring flowers in my ‘hood

I ended the day with my weekly mah jongg game.

  • SaturdayLong Run Saturday. I had new appliances being delivered so I had to stay local.  We all met at the Rail Trail at various times for various distances. I wanted to run a few miles before my friends arrived but Sherry was already there when i arrived at 7:15 so  I ran 4 miles with her and then Jan and Deirdre joined us for 4 more HUMID miles. Afterward, as usual, everyone gathered for brunch.

  • Sunday – Hiking Boating Sunday. Another scorcher of a day.  too hot for a hike. The only solution was to spend the day on the lake. It was very breezy so quite comfortable.

aaah! we docked at 3 different islands and stayed cool

FFF: Runfessions for June ’21

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

Unless I have company, I’ve gotten pretty lazy about walking.

In the beginning of the pandemic, I walked 2-3 times a day.  Always alone.

hit the neighborhood or waterline everyday

Now I rarely never walk before work or during lunch.

Luckily I have friends to walk with at least twice a week after work.

former co-workers and now walking buds

Do you need friends to get you moving or do you get your steps in alone?

2. I runfess…

Due to my work schedule, I wind up running at the hottest time of the day – noon during my lunch break. As a result, my runs are short and sloooow.

lunch sweat fest

Does weather or schedule influence when and how long you run?

3.I runfess…

I am worried about how going back to office will affect my running (3 days a week starting July 6 and 5 days starting Sept 7).

I know, for years I worked and traveled and got in all my runs.

running while working in Buffalo

How did I do it? (I guess I got spoiled working from home and being flexible with running, dressing, eating, etc.)

Any tips for adjusting to going back to the office?

4. I runfess…

I have started participating on weekly group trail runs.

I love the trails but not for running.

I am clumsy and uncoordinated and I just don’t want to fall.

So why attend trails runs?

For purely social reasons. lol

Should I run at another time or do these trail run/walks count as runs?

5.I runfess…

I enjoyed my recent races more than I thought I would. I have not been training. I have not done any speed work. But I run better in a race. I guess you can say, my races are my speed work.

So I guess that I need to find some more races to sign up for before fall….

smiling even running in the pouring rain.

Are you racing? Have you found not racing has slowed down your pace?

Happy Running! Anything to runfess this month? Please share.
