Runfessions for April ’22

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

This month, it’s a mishmash…

1.  I gymfess… 

When I say I will do something, I follow through.

That means three mornings a week before work, I go to the gym … no matter what!

At first, I thought:  “I can’t wait until my free trial at the YMCA is over on June 4!! Hanging out with sweaty old men at 6:30 am is not my thing…”

But now, I am used to the routine. And I like routines.

So I think I’m going to miss my gym time.

I did send an email about my FREE local gym.  Here is their response:

Fitness Connect locations are currently closed to prevent any potential spread of COVID-19. It is unknown when these locations will reopen. We do understand gyms in New York are able to start reopening on 8/24/2020. But because the Fitness Connect locations rely on the public to self-serve and maintain the sanitation of the equipment, there is no guarantee that the proper sanitation protocols and safety measures will be used. We appreciate your understanding that we are looking out for the health and safety of our community…

Sigh. 😦

2. I runfess… 

Until recently, I was running three times a week by myself.  I could run anywhere and at any time.

Now I run with a group on Mondays (FTC) and Wednesdays (STEM).  Soon there will also be trail runs on Thursdays…

Yes, it’s inconvenient often to run at 6 or 6:30 pm. I’m tired and hungry!!

But it’s so much more enjoyable to run with others and I run much better!

5.  I workfess….

I love the freedom of working from home but I am looking forward (a little bit) to getting out of the house, dressing up and seeing real people.  I will be teaching live starting May 25.  Two-four days a week, every other week, I think. (No NYC travel yet, though.)

The remote trainings will continue from home… For how long? Who knows?

Delmar Dash Race Recap

It is nice to run a race that is only 10 minutes from your house.

This is my 8th time running this race. In 2017, my back was bothering me so I didn’t run it and in 2012, I had a broken ankle. Then with the Pandemic, it was cancelled in 2020 and 2021. Otherwise, I have tried to run it every year.  But I haven’t run it in 3 years.

Pre-Race Activities and Preparations:

It is a flat course so my times have been fairly decent:

It may sound like a broken record but three years later, my expectations were fairly low… In fact, a course PW was very possible.

My two 5 milers (Electric City 5 Miler & Shamrock Shuffle) this year were pretty slow but of course, this course was easier than either one.

I was a little worried that my foot would continue to be painful after the half marathon last weekend. It had started to hurt around mile 6. But I ran 3 times during the week and it seemed to be ok.  Fingers crossed.

To save time on race day, I picked up my bib and race shirt the day before.

Now only if spring would arrive. It was windy on Monday, then got snow on Tuesday…windy the rest of the week…

It’s always hard at this time of year to decide what to wear.  Too cold for spring clothes but I am tired of jackets and tights. I opted for a long-sleeved shirt, a skirt with compression socks, a cap and hoped that it would be enough.

Race Day:

I got there early. I knew a few people doing this race so I went inside the school to look for them.

As soon as I arrived, I bumped into Barbara and we chatted for a bit.

I also chatted with several other runners that I knew. Because of the local half marathon and Boston that was held last weekend and some other races scheduled for this weekend, there weren’t as many runners as usual. Probably around 100.  There were usually around 300 racers.

It was a little chilly out but we were chatting so waited until the last minute to go outside.

My hope for the race was to have a decent finish time. Maybe even faster my last two five milers.

Zero PR aspirations especially without doing any speed work and my recent sore foot and DOMS from last weekend’s half marathon.  Besides, I wanted to stay healthy for my half marathon in 4 weeks!!

I lined up with some faster runners. (but lost them as soon as the race started. lol) But I forgot that they do not use chip time – just gun time for this race.  I should have lined up closer to the starting line.

Of course waiting for the race to begin, I was cold but I was fine as soon as I started running. In fact, I got warm and could have worn a tank or short-sleeved shirt.

I tried to start out fast but not too fast.  Though I never know what this is. And I probably did since my legs seemed to have zero energy today.

There was someone calling out times at each mile.  When I heard my Mile 1 time, I thought they were mistaken (8:xx)

By the water stop at mile 2.5 or so, I was pooped and I stopped for water and walked a bit.

I tired with each mile but tried my best to keep it up some semblance of speed.

The course was pancake flat and we just circled the neighborhood streets.  The roads were marked and there were court marshals at each turn.
I officially died by mile 5… I was warm and so I just walked and ran and repeated it until the finish line came into view .

Post Race Activities:

Barbara finished shortly after I did. (And she did NOT walk at all!! Impressive.)

Before the Pandemic, the refreshments were inside and there was soup, bread, birthday cake and hot chocolate.  They even offered massages!

Today they were outside and consisted of bananas, cookies, muffins and many types of pastries.

And I won my age group, though I was pretty sure that I may have been the only one.

I waited around for the awards ceremony and I was thrilled that it was NOT a medal.  I love something usable.

The company that sponsored the race had a raffle for a basket filled with running related items and some freebies.

Additional Race Reflections:

Positives:

    • Nearby (3 miles away from my house)
    • Organized packet pick up the day before and morning of
    • Lots of parking
    • Warm, dry place to wait before and after (middle school gym)
    • Real bathrooms
    • Well organized course, lots of course marshals
    • Gender-specific tech shirt
    • Glasses as age group awards
    • Flat course
    • Well marked course
    • Free photos (coming soon)

Negatives:

    • Small turnout
    • COVID limitations (food, massages)
    • Gun timed

ugh… that last mile….

My time was TWO minutes faster than my last 5 mile race.  Woo Hoo!

Delmar Dash times?  3 faster and 4 slower!! Sounds about right!

Since this course is flat and near where I live, it is still one of my favorite races and I will run it again next year. I am really happy with my time…because I had ZERO pain!

Since I was training for a half marathon, I felt like I needed to add some miles to the legs.

So I ran to the rail trail.  Lots of runners and bikers were out on this gorgeous day.  I dragged myself through 5 more miles (with lots of walking).

I felt like I had gotten blisters from my running shoes (ones that I haven’t worn since last summer)… and I did. Luckily I had brought another pair to wear but OUCHY !!

That makes 10 miles for the day… and so Long Run done!!

Would I recommend this race?

Yes. Absolutely. I hope more runners sign up next year.

Weekly Run Down for 4.17.22-4.24.22: Racing Close to Home

It is rare when you can run to the race start. But that was the case for today’s 5 mile race.

the last time this race was held was in 2019 (and even Judy ran it)

Last Week:

  • Sunday – A cold blustery day where we even had snow flurries on and off all day. WTH?

(Boy, did I get lucky with the weather for Saturday’s Half Marathon)

Thumbs up for NO RAIN!!

I rested my achy quads, filed our taxes and then we went to my MIL’s for a family Easter Dinner.

for Italians, dinner usually consists of lasagna and meatballs…

  • Monday – In the 20s when I woke up!!  So I went to gym…

you always sweat there..

Though I did have to work, I kept sneaking peeks at the Boston Marathon while tracking a few friends.

I debated whether or not, my quads would be ok running at the FTC group run that evening.  In the end, I did go…

I ran with the intermediate group and NO foot pain. We pushed through those nasty wind gusts and finished before the rain arrived!! Win. Win.

  • Tuesday – A snowy morning (yes, snow!!!!) but all I had planned today was the gym before work..

 not amused and neither were my daffodils

nasty driving so I waited until lunchtime… and I do use the machines (not just stand there and smile. LOL

and a walk after work (in the mall.)

  • Wednesday – I slept in today but ran a short distance after work before volunteering with the STEM training group at UAlbany.

slower than usual since the (fast) girl I usual run with had oral surgery … phew!.

  • Thursday – A busy work day and it was insanely WINDY so all I did today was walk in the mall with my BFF.
  • Friday – Another before work gym workout

and then a neighborhood run after work before the evening with the mah jongg ladies.

  • Saturday – Long Run Saturday got changed to a walk with my running friends since I had a race the next day.

great to be together again – there were 7 of us for brunch!!

After brunch, I stopped off and got my race bib/shirt.

I had thought of hiking but instead did the usual stuff that doesn’t get done when you work all week (laundry, cleaning, shopping, etc.)

may be too cold for a skirt but so tired of tights and capris that I’ll chance it…

  • Sunday –  Race Day!  Delmar Dash – a neighborhood 5 mile race.

I started running this race back in 2011…

Unfortunately not a lot of runners ran the race but it was still fun and the weather was perfect.

I even won my age group (may have been the only one lol)

After the race, I ran 5 more miles so I could count it as my 10 mile long run.  That run was miserable but it’s done.

lots of walking but listening to a podcast interview with Adrianne Haslet (who lost a leg in Boston bombing & hit by a car in 2019) made me forgot about my blisters…

Racing by the Alphabet (Half Marathon Version)

I wondered if I could name a Half Marathon that I’ve run for every letter of the alphabet.

Nope. I had to add in some other distances.

2022 Helderberg to Hudson Half Marathon Race Recap

It seems like I’ve been planning this race forever. As with all my big races, I impulsively sign up way in advance (and then often regret it LOL).

I ran the first annual one in 2019. Due to COVID, in 2020, I ran the race virtually and in 2021, I ran it on a completely different course (a hilly one).

So I signed up for 2022 Helderberg to Hudson Half Marathon as my 58th Half Marathon for several reasons:

  • FOMO. Many of my running friends were doing it.
  • It’s local. I can sleep in my own bed.
  • I am familiar with the course.  I run on it often.
  • It’s a downhill course. (470 ft elevation loss)

Half Marathon Training:

If you follow my posts, you also know that I am not strict about following a training plan. I ran my last half marathon on February 27 in NYC. An then a virtual one on March 19.

On weekdays, I try to run 3x… Since this week I ran Sun, Mon, Tues and Wed (4 days in a row), I decided on two rest days before the race (so nada on Thursday ad Friday.)

and then on the weekend, I do my long run, if possible.

Pre-Race Activities and Preparations:

I picked up my bib (and Sherry and Stan’s) after work on Thursday at the race finish (in between rain showers).

and then had pasta for dinner on Friday.

I checked the weather and

no bueno 😦

So what do I wear?

Plan A – skirt and short sleeves

Plan B: capris, long sleeves and gloves

Race goals?

The same as usual. Finish happy with no injuries.  I have realized that having a time goal is difficult at my age. Having any expectations of a PR or even a course PR is unrealistic, as well.

That being said, since this race did not have the hills of Central Park or the bridges of Florida, I was hoping to have a faster finish time than my last three half marathons … but again, anything can happen on race day.

Race Day:

Since I had run this race before, I was familiar with the start and finish logistics. But they still were tricky. There was a bus from the finish to the start (and no parking at the start). However this year, I  knew when to get there and whereto find nearby parking.  Over 2,000 runners had signed up for this race!!!

Well, I woke up to 50 degrees and no rain!! What??

I wore Plan A and added two throwaway shirts and gloves.  I even decided against bag check.  There appeared to be a change in the forecast.  No rain until afternoon.  I was hoping they were right!!

I arrived around 6:00 am, found parking in the lot near the finish. I met Stan and Sherry there and we walked to the bus.

We arrived at the bus location and there were many buses.  We wound up getting the last seats on Bus #1.

Our bus got lost and we arrived after bus #2 and # 3 but we were plenty early.  The race did not start until 8:30

There were so many familiar faces.. from former running groups, training groups, other races, etc..

I was a little chilly and wondered if I made the right decision about what to wear. (I did!!)

Believe it or not, the sun came out.  What?  Glad I grabbed my sunglasses.

Eventually, it was time to go to our corrals. There were 4 and I was in the last one.

It appeared to be warming up a bit so I tossed both of my throw away shirts but kept on my arm sleeves and gloves.

Anyway, here’s how the race went:

Miles 1-5:

The course started in the park and then we ran just over 2 miles on the roads of Voorheesville so runners could spread out before they got on the rail trail. There were some steep downhill sections and I am sure that I ran them too fast.

From there, the course headed east for about 9 miles into Albany on the rail trail. If you read my blog, you may remember that this is a trail near my home and that I run on often. It was nice to only have to run on it one way…going downhill.  It was not steep and I was able to run at a comfortable pace.

The problem was that it was HUMID and the temps were rising.  The sun even peeped out.  I rolled down my arm sleeves, then took them off and eventually just tossed them. I also tossed my gloves.

But I was THIRSTY… I think there was a water stop at mile 1 or 2 but I skipped it and the first water stop was not until around 3 miles.

Dying… I also walked for the first time (I always walk at the water stops).

There were clocks at each 5k.  I saw when I passed the 5k mark that I was running too fast. I slowed down a little but obviously not enough.

My breakfast was at 5 am so I was getting pretty hungry.  I was hoping that there would be a water stop soon… Nope not yet…

The great thing about a local race was the the crowd support and volunteers.  Many called my name and it was so welcome.

So the race continued on this same trail.  The elevation felt a little steeper on this portion but my legs felt more and more tired.  Or should I say my quads were complaining from running downhill. The sun was getting stronger. Finally around mile 6, there was the water stop. I walked even longer than before and ate a GU.

At the 10k clock, it was obvious that I slowed but probably not enough.

What was nice about this race was that I knew so many of the runners.  They kept passing me by. Some just waved, others slowed and ran with me for a while. I also had some friends along the course who cheered me on.

I hate to be a Debbie Downer… I have run 4 half marathons this year already with zero foot pain.  Well, my luck ended around mile 6 or so.  My neuroma started to throb.  Yes, I can run on it but it made me very nervous that my foot pain had re-surfaced.

In hindsight, I think it was a combination of wearing older worn shoes and running downhill… (We’ll see how it goes in future runs/races.)

I walked (too long) at the next water stop around mile 8  and ate my second GU.

Miles 10-13.1

The foot pain eased up and then I started getting a blister on the other foot. (No, I didn’t tape it and forgot that my previous races were run in frigid temps, humidity makes a big difference. D’uh)

The rail trail finally ended and we were heading into Albany. This was my least favorite apart of the course – not scenic at all – running through the city (and not the nice part) and then along a busy road. With the smell of a sewage plant.

My quads were toast at this point.  My lower back ached and I just wanted to be done.

A few more water stops and longer walks.  The clock at the 20K mark indicated that a PR was out of the question but surprisingly I was still having a decent race.

The last few miles seemed endless. It was no longer downhill. In fact going to the finish line was slightly uphill.

I walked a few more times and tried as best as I could to sprint through the finish.

I saw the clock ahead and I hoped to finish under 2:12:00…and I did NOT!!

But thumbs up! I crossed at 2:12:24. My fastest 13.1 miles since this one in 2019!!!!!

Post Race Activities:

I got my medal, some water and of course, took some pics.

I checked the results. Nope, no age group award. I was 4th.  But I wasn’t even expecting to do that well.

There was the usual food box for this race and chocolate milk.

There was also beer. Nah. Too long a line and too early in the day for a beer!!

I texted Stan and Sherry and we met up and ate our lunches together while re-capping our race experiences.  Consensus: Downhill races are hard!!!

Eventually after all our friends had finished, we limped back to our cars.

Additional Race Reflections:

I have yet to figure out how to negative split a long race. Maybe I need to train better (You think??)

My finish time was way faster than my previous three half marathons. (2:26:02, 2:20:55, 2:21:29).  I am thrilled about that.

In 2019, I wanted a sub 2:12 finish so I would qualify for the 2020 NYC Half Marathon. And I did!! This year, I had no glorious expectations. Yet, surprisingly, I was only 24 seconds off!!  No worries for the 2023 NYC Half, I am already in after running it virtually this year.

As you can see from the stats above, I went out too fast. And my lack of training caught up to me after 10 miles. I was on track to PR, the first half of the race.

The bad news is that my foot is sore.  My quads are achy.

I have confirmed that downhill races aren’t as easy as you may think. Rolling hills are actually easier on the body. (We runners are never satisfied)

The Good:

  • Lots of race info emailed and on website including runner guide and spectator guide.
  • Easy packet pick-up. Neat race-related items.
  • Registration options – cheaper without a hoodie.
  • Free bus from the finish to the start.
  • Many porta potties at the start. Long lines but they moved quickly
  • Bag Check. Well organized before and easy pick up at the end
  • Downhill course (except for first and last 2 miles)
  • Water and Nuun stops.
  • GU available at several water stops
  • Decent crowd support
  • Well marked course for each mile
  • Clocks at 5k, 10k, 15k, 20k
  • Very cool medal.
  • Great post race refreshments
  • Immediate electronic race results
  • PR bell
  • Free photos
  • Nearby – no transportation or hotel costs.
  • Support from friends

The Bad:

  • Not enough water stops. I think they should be at least every 2 miles esp with humid temps.
  • The boring, unscenic last 2 miles.
  • Fat-free chocolate milk (I deserve the real thing after 13.1 miles)

The Ugly:

  • Pain 😦

Would I recommend this race?

Yes. Yes. Yes. ARE did a fantastic job attending to every detail.  I may even do it again next year.

Next Up:

A few shorter races – 5m, some 5ks.

Then:

Weekly Run Down for 4.10.22-4.17.22: A Week of De-Cluttering and Racing

Yesterday I ran a local half marathon for the third time (but only the 2nd time on its original course). Sherry was my accomplice in each one…

Helderberg to Hudson Half Marathon

2019,                         2021,                             2022

I used to say that I would not repeat a half marathon.  However, money and time interferes with my desire to travel the world and run different  half marathons.

So yes, I will repeat local races and ones in Florida.

Last Week:

  • Sunday – After a step overloaded day on Saturday in NYC…

I ran the first annual Shape 5.8M Loop race (Read the recap here).

I met up with old and new friends and had a really great time. I was so grateful for the cool temps, only one loop of those Central Park hills and the gorgeous scenery.

I had a delicious brunch and stroll with Cari and Elizabeth and then added many more miles walking though the city, Macy’s Flower Show and Bryant Park before heading back on the train home.

  • Monday – I took a day off from work to recover from my weekend LOL.

I started with an early morning gym visit…

I got laundry, unpacking and grocery shopping done before I decided to attend the afternoon FTC (rather than the evening one I usually go to.

Unfortunately there was no advanced group so I just ran with my friends who were mentoring the Intermediate group

After a stop at TJ’s, it was still too nice to stay indoors so I went on a hike at the Holly Hock Nature Sanctuary..

I ended the day with dinner out to catch up with an old friend.

What a lovely day… I think I need to retire lol

  • Tuesday – Another day off….

I forgot to mention that over the weekend, our sump pump broke and our un-finished basement flooded. (So glad I was not home!!)  It was karma because I have been nagging my hubby for years to clean out the basement…

He finally agreed and 1-800-gotjunk came to clear everything out.

So most of todday was spent sorting through junk that I wanted to keep and tossing all the stuff that we did not need to pay to have removed.

After a rainy start, it turned out to be a beautiful day for a run… I took a drive to the Corning bike path

Then I met two friends for a long walk on the trail trail followed by dinner out to celebrate a birthday.

  • Wednesday –  Back to work and the gym first thing…

got up late… didn’t even have time to put my contacts in…

Spring has sprung and my house has been somewhat de-cluttered.

After two truck loads of junk removed, I now have a cleared basement and roomier rooms (got rid of old bookcases, chairs, desks, dressers, etc. Ahhhh!!)

In the evening I was scheduled to volunteer with STEM again. It started to rain and thunderstorms were predicted  so I left early and did a short run just in case STEM got cancelled.

It apparently only rained at my house.  Dry as a bone at UAlbany for our run.

even though they are doing Couch to 5k, the lady I ran with (as I did last time) likes to run fast and not walk… oy!

  • Thursday – Rest Day!

In the blink of an eye, the weather changed from winter to summer.  80 degrees today!! I did some weeding during lunch and was sweating!!

Then we had a thunderstorm and temps dropped like 30 degrees.

I got my bib for Saturday’s race after work (in between the raindrops).

  • Friday – Rest Day #2. I went to the gym before work.

Perfect weather for running…. Grrr.

My Mah Jongg game got cancelled due to Passover seders. So I took to the trails for a walk.

And then I carb loaded and debated my race day outfit.

  • Saturday – Race Day! Helderberg to Hudson Half Marathon. And the Weather Gods answered my prayers. No rain. Even sunshine.

So many familiar faces which made it a fun event. A downhill course for the most part which still seemed very hard as I had my usual positive splits (but happy with my overall finish time.)

  • Sunday – Plans for the day include Easter dinner with the family and finishing those taxes!

This Coming Week on the Run– 

  • Monday – gym, Freihofer Training Challenge Run (FTC)
  • Tuesday – rest day, walk with friends
  • Wednesday – gym, STEM run
  • Thursday – run, walk with BFF
  • Friday – gym, run, mah jongg

SHAPE 5.8 Mile Loop Race Recap

This was not my first SHAPE event.

In 2017, when I got frustrated about not getting into the NYC Half Marathon lottery, I signed up for the SHAPE Half Marathon with my running friend Alyssa.  I was so excited to be able to race in Central Park (oblivious that it was a 2 looped hilly course).

In the end, Alyssa could not go but I hooked up with a new friend, Sue and roomed with her, met some of her friends as well as one of the STEM runners.  It was such a fun weekend that Sue and I planned additional NYC race-cations after that.

After TWO NYC Half Marathons in Central Park, I was not anxious to run the SHAPE Half Marathon again..

But this year for the first time, they offered a ONE loop option.  I jumped at it.  Cat and Harlem hills only ONCE. Woo Hoo!  And NYC is usually very beautiful (Cherry Blossom season) this time of year.

1. Pre-Race Activities and Preparations:

Close call. I was tentatively scheduled to work in NYC April 7-8 and then 10-11.  Returning to the city on April 9 for this race would have been very inconvenient and so I was going DNS.  Luckily, my work travel got postponed.

I took the early morning train to NYC on Saturday.  I walked to my hotel to check in. It was raining then but stayed dry the rest of the day (until dinner.) First I grabbed some lunch

and then I headed to NYRR to pick up my race bib and shirt.

I was near Central Park so of course, I needed to check out the cherry blossoms.

I got lucky and they were at peak so I wandered and wandered taking photos of all the flowering trees in the park (well it seemed that way.)

I was about to head back to my hotel when Cari texted me.  We decided to meet and there was a lot of walking and chatting.

Finally it was time to head back to my hotel…. I walked, of course. And I got caught in the rain again.

I ate my usual pre-race pizza and walked around for a bit before setting in and relaxing in my hotel room.

This time of year it is so hard to dress. for a race. I was so sick of tights and layers that I decided to risk it and bring a skirt and short-sleeved top. There would be bag check so I could bring a jacket for after.

Plan A

Then I got nervous looking at the forecast… it was cooler than I had hoped so I brought along plan B:

2.Race Day

So 5:30 am came early on Sunday morning.  I brought my breakfast from home (oatmeal) so I was content. I looked at the temps… feels like 30 something.  I immediately changed my outfit to Plan B. Then I heard raindrops (I freaked a little… no rain gear packed!!)

The rain quickly stopped. Phew! I grabbed an Uber to Race Day Central (W 72th St.) and got there around 6:45 am.  The race was not scheduled to begin until 8 am so I had plenty of time to hang out. It was quite chilly.  I shivered but knew that I would warm up once I started running.

There was bag check near the Naumburg Bandshell so I left a bag there with a warmer jacket, beanie, and gloves for afterward.

I did arrive too early and I was COLD!! I walked around the small expo at the Bandshell, entered a raffle and sampled some drinks.

Little by little runners arrived – about 3,000 for each race.

Finally it was time to line up. I was assigned Corral I.  I reluctantly tossed my throwaways…

One of my local running friends was also running this race with her daughter. I was surprised to bump into her (among over 6,000 runners…)

Unfortunately, the half marathon started first so I had to wait at least 15 minutes… brrrrr.

This 5.8 loop race was a first annual. According the website, the start was near W 64th Street.  Runners would complete almost one full counter-clockwise loop of the park, before which they’ll turn left onto the 72nd Street Transverse off West Drive just before the 6-mile mark. The finish line would be just east of the Naumburg Bandshell.

The good news was that (unlike my last two Central Park races), I would only have to tackle the hills ONCE!!!!

The race is a blur as usual but here’s how I remember it:

Miles 1-3:

Like any NYRR race, the first mile/mile-and-a-half, was a bit congested. The half marathoners started first but eventually, I would run into the slow runners/walkers.

It didn’t take me long to get warm and roll down my arm sleeves.  The hills were rolling but they didn’t seem too bad. The weather was perfect.  There were water stops at each mile.  I am pretty sure than I skipped the first two.

So the first few miles were wonderful. All cherry blossom trees had blossomed and it was just a picture-perfect day. I started looking at all the women around me and felt so inspired. This is an all women’s race which makes it special. There were tutus and bright colors and women cheering on other women. It was just so upbeat and empowering!

This was my third time this year racing in the park.  I felt like I knew what was coming. Once we were on the east side of the loop – there was the first BIG hill – Cat hill.

This time there were a bunch of volunteers playing music and cheering us on sitting next to the cat. I even tried to RUN the whole thing!!

The scenery was awesome and my legs felt strong (in spite of all the miles walked the previous day.)

Miles 4-5.8:

As usual, after the first few miles, I started slowing down. The biggest problem today was that I didn’t think I needed to bring any fuel.  I usually eat a GU at mile 4.  But I didn’t have anything. I stopped at the water stop and I definitely felt my energy waning.  I even missed Fred! (his statue, that is).

The second big challenge was Harlem Hill – about a half mile of steepness and I didn’t even attempt to run the whole thing.  All the volunteers along the hill were great, though, cheering us on and telling us we were almost at the top (I appreciated their lies LOL). There was even a band with drummers. It was nice to know that once I reached the top of the hill, the hardest part of the course was over.

I was getting warm and realized that I could have worn my Plan A outfit.  I took off my arm sleeves and gloves but since I was wearing capris with no shorties, I had to throw them away (instead of tucking them in the shorts for another time).

Now we were on the west side of the loop and nearing the end…

Did I feel guilty not running the half? A little but then again, this was a taper fun run in preparation for a half marathon the week after.

Finally there was the sign (at 72nd) for the 5.8 runners to turn left and head to the finish line.

I was running out of gas but I did my best to look happy as I crossed. (official photos not available yet.)

3. Post Race:

No medal for the 5.8 runners but immediately, we were given a water and a heat blanket.

I grabbed some food (bagel, apple, pretzels) and headed to retrieve my bag.  I was very sweaty so needed my jacket (even though it had warmed up quite a bit from the morning.)

I found Cari and we walked out of park to our brunch location where we would be meeting Elizabeth.

Brunch was outstanding as was the company.

We strolled together stopping in a book store and a gluten-free bakery before we bid farewell.  And of course, I walked all the way back to my hotel.

I still had time between checking out of the hotel and catching my train back home.  So I walked around the Macy’s Flower Show and Bryant Park (got rained on again briefly. lol.)

4. Additional race reflections:

It was strange to spend the weekend in NYC and not run 13.1 miles.  In the end, it was a good decision.. No regrets.

The Good:

  • Organized packet pick-up at NYRR (several days before and even on Saturday and race day)
  • Lots of porta potties at the start and throughout the course
  • Rea restrooms in the park
  • Bag Check
  • Organized corral start (by pace) for both races.
  • Beautiful course through scenic Central Park with cherry blossoms at their peak.
  • Lots of water stops (every mile) and all had Gatorade.
  • The runners and their contagious excitement.
  • ALL WOMENS RACE
  • Great crowd support along the course.
  • Free one-year subscription to Health magazine
  • Perfect weather.
  • One loop option in addition to the half marathon.
  • Small expo and music after.
  • Immediate results
  • 5 year age group (awards mailed)
  • Free photos

The Bad:

  • The Hills.
  • No expo at packet pick-up.
  • Chilly morning temps

Would I recommend this race?

Yes, definitely.

Overall, I really loved this race. The course was beautiful yet challenging. The weather was perfect. The energy of the volunteers and all the women running were spectacular.

5. Final Stats:

Splits:

But a PR since I had never raced this distance before.  I had no goals and I had no idea if this was a decent finish time for this course since most of the time I have run TWO loops.

I looked after the race:

5M = 9:24 pace, 10K = 9:26 – in 2018 and 2019 and age group winners both times.

And yes, I have obviously slowed down but I am still out there.

No aches and pains.  Feet feeling great!!!

I am very happy!!!

ST? Who Me?

This was the original title for this post. (I write them sometimes months in advance):

Thanks to Judy for providing me with more information on what I already believed (You can read the article if you are interested.)

And yes, I still believe that ST is NOT necessary to improve your running..

But, it seemed hypocritical to post about it since I have been using the machines at the gym 3x a week for the past month.

So I am going to instead post the positive and negatives of my gym experience.

It may be totally individual to me, though.

Here’s some specifics:

  • I do not work out at home.
  • At the gym, I have not used the bike, treadmill, any weights, the pool or run on the indoor track.
  • Nor have I taken any classes.
  • My membership is free until June 4, 2022.

I drink coffee, get in the car, and arrive at the gym usually by 6:30 am.  I use almost all the machines and then drive home, have breakfast and start my work day by 8 am.

Pros:

  • A positive way to start the day.
  • A short drive from my home.
  • I work from home so I don’t have to change my clothes after.
  • I can go at any time of day.
  • There are a big variety of machines that work different muscles.
  • I can work as hard as I choose.
  • I can choose which muscle groups to work on.
  • No computer screens.
  • Quiet time. No talking by others 

Cons:

  • If I am up early, I’d rather be outside running.
  • It is time consuming wiping down the machines after each use.
  • Sometimes you have to wait until a machine is available.
  • You have to remember the individual settings on each machine.
  • It is crowded at certain times of day.
  • There is a fine line between over doing and not working hard enough.
  • Gym doesn’t open until 8 am on Saturdays and is closed on Sundays (due to COVID).

I know that this is only ONE option to working out.

Many runners work out at home.  But I don’t own any equipment.

And I may be weird but I do not like REMOTE instruction…  YouTube videos, Peleton etc. I stare at a computer screen all day and the last thing I want to do is watch someone doing yoga or leading a workout. My favorite use for Peleton was for the outdoor runs…

My gym plans for the future?

I don’t think it is worth it for me to join the Y. My FREE local gym is still closed (since the pandemic) but I would love to see it open up again!! And I would go regularly, I think.

But back to my original post:

So if you don’t strength train, what things could you do to that may improve your running?

  • Run more.

Consistency is key to better running.  If you are tired or sore, instead of skipping a run, just slow it down. (Remember if you walk, you are still a runner.)

  • Run longer.

Running 4-5 miles every weekend will not give you speed or endurance.  You don’t have to increase it a lot (10% is recommended). If the increased mileage makes you sore or tired, go back and forth (increase then go back down, then increase again.)

  • Lose weight.

Extra pounds can have a negative impact on your health and on your running especially on your joints (and knees).  You don’t have to go on an extreme diet but just be more mindful about what you eat and how active you are.

  • Do Drills/Running Workouts

You know what I mean: tempo runs, hill repeats, fartleks, progression runs, intervals, etc.  They will seem challenging but may improve your running.

  • Race.

The crowd support, race adrenaline, competition, etc. that can only happen in a race may improve your running.

Weekly Run Down for 4.4.22-4.10.22: Back in the “Big Apple”

I managed to avoid the rain and get all my runs in.

This getaway weekend almost did not happen due to work travel.

But happily, the work trip got postponed and I spent the weekend in NYC.

I ran a race, and I got to see  my NYC besties and the Cherry Blossoms at peak!!

Last Week:

  • Sunday – I would have liked to go to the gym, but it is CLOSED on Sundays… Boo!

Instead, I went hiking (after tracking my friends running the Cherry Blossom 10 miler),

found a new place to hike… it was lovely and I got it done before the rain

stopped at Target on my way home and then caught up on Bridgerton…

enjoyed it even if it was not as steamy as season 1.

  • Monday – To make up for Sunday, I started the day at the gym

my shirt was appropriate as I realized that I need to do this not only when I run...

and then I went to my usually scheduled FTC run after work.

  • Tuesday – With rain in the forecast for almost everyday this week, I decided to go for a run after work. After doing some errands, I drove to the opposite end of the rail (from last week.

  • Wednesday –  A rainy day so I was glad to call it a sorta rest day.

I did go to the gym before work.

Today was my first volunteer session with STEM.  The group meets 3x a week at UAlbany at 6:30 pm and uses the Couch to 5k app to prepare these new runners (12 from the Addiction Care Center of Albany) for a 5k (scheduled for June 5.)

  • Thursday – Another rainy day so I decided on rest day (because yesterday was not exactly as restful as I had planned). But I slept in instead of going to the gym before work and then I had an errand to run during lunch.

But I did go for a walk in the mall after work.

  • Friday – No rest for the weary. I got up early and went to the gym

Rain on and off all day but I managed to get my run done during lunch.

Then I packed and played mah jongg in the evening.

  • Saturday – I took an early morning train to NYC, checked into my hotel and had my usual NYC lunch:

 and spent the rest of the day exploring my favorite city…

I got rained on at the beginning and end of my day but the the cherry blossoms at peak made up for the weather!!

  • Sunday –  This morning I ran the Shape 5.8M Loop race in Central Park. A great all women’s race (about 3000 runners ran the hall and 3200  the new shorter distance)

It was chilly (even rainy) before the race (and after) but the weather during was perfect and I was so happy to only run ONE loop of the park.

met up with a local friend and her daughter and made some new friends… The views made up for those hills!! My first 5.8 mile race=PR!

Cari met me at the race and after we had brunch and Elizabeth, then wandered around before I had to head back to my hotel to check out..

Afterward, I did more exploring – Macy’s Flower Show and Bryant Park before taking the train home. (Came home to a grumpy hubby,- our sum pump had broken and flooded the basement… glad I was away lol).

FFF: Reasons to Race

Many runners never enter a race.

Many runners stopped racing during COVID.

And of course, you are still a runner if you do NOT race.

But it’s a shame, because IMO, you are missing what enhances the running experience in more ways than I can possibly describe in this post.

Here are a few reasons why I race so often and why I think you should too:

1.Having a goal keeps you motivated

By signing up for a race, you automatically create a goal.

You’re either looking to finish the race or achieve a PR, maybe even both?

These goals will help motivate you to train, getting you out the door in the pouring rain or pushing you to the gym for that dreaded strength workout.

 2.To Push your limits

Running in a race allows you to push your potential and achieve results you may not have thought were possible. (Run without walking?  Run on trails? Run a full marathon?)

We can almost always run faster while racing due to the competitive environment, not to mention the increased adrenaline!

Take advantage of this and see what you’re really made of.

3. Provides a sense of community

There’s more to running than running itself, there’s a whole community of runners out there!

Running in a race will really allow you to embrace this community. Prepare to be cheered and to cheer your fellow runners as they achieve their goals on race day – just like yourself.

And make new friends!!

 4. To feel accomplished

It’s not every day that you get to finish a 5k or a half marathon.

Finishing a race, especially if you run a PR, is an incredible feeling. You’ll feel proud of all your hard work leading up to the race, and more importantly be proud of what you have achieved – and so you should be!

I will add that finishing any race, even if it’s a PW, is an achievement.

5. It’s fun!

Finally, running a race is fun! Toeing the start line with hundreds/thousands of runners, all with similar goals feels great.

From those pre-race chats and porta-pottie visits to making new friends and enjoying a post-race brunch, running a race is an exciting all-round experience.

IMO, worth every cent, you pay to sign up.
