Malta 5K Race Recap

This race is one of my favorites. Not because the director, Paul Loomis, reads my blog or that my stepson works at Global Foundaries, one of the sponsors of the race. But because of the easy parking, indoor restrooms, post race chocolate milk, generous age group awards, lots of familiar faces to run with and its flawless organization.  For these reasons and more, I keep coming back.

This was my 5th time running this 5k. So you can say that I was familiar with this course.

The course itself is not very exciting…you are running around chip plants but the loops let you see the fast runners and all those runners that are behind you twice during the race. And though there are a few uphills and downhills, it’s basically flat so no complaints.

In 2012, I finished in 29:53 (recovering from a broken ankle). In 2013, I finished in 29:49  (recovering from a broken foot). In 2014, I was healthy and finished 3rd in my AG with a time of 28:47.

getting my award from Paul Loomis

Last year, also healthy, I finished in 28:56 and 4th in my age group. But like this year, I was training for a half marathon. Running slow long runs doesn’t help my 5k times.

So my hope for the race this year was to get my splits in the 9s and finish under 30 minutes and have enough in the tank to run 5-7 more miles after the race. (My half marathon is only ONE week away!!!)

Winning an age group award would be gravy!!

The forecast was for cooler weather and possibly rain.  However, it was 70 when I left my house at 6:45 am and already pretty humid.

img_2013

img_2012

I got there early to get parking and did get a spot in the parking lot right near the finish line.  This race seems to get bigger each year.  There were over 800 total racers.

img_2033

a nice long sleeved tech shirt

As I mentioned, it is very well-organized – signs for the race, indoor bathrooms and waiting area, etc.

img_2009

I immediately bumped into some older ladies that I haven’t in a while. Then I saw Holly, a friend from previous races and the Turkey Trot and Freihofer’s training group.  I was surprised because she said was going to do the Dunkin Run.  I was happy to see her … sort of.  But she is in my age group and usually faster than me (except for the last 5k) and you know how competitive I am…

Then I ran into these older guys and we hung out until it was time to head to the start.

img_2038

Richard (84) & Paul (67)

I was hoping that they would have net times this year but I they did not. So Holly, Gary and I started near the front but not too close to the speedsters.

img_2014

The race started and Holly took off. I knew that I couldn’t keep up with her but I tried to keep her in my sight for as long as I could. A very similar pattern to last week.

I was able to follow Paul more closely.  He was my unofficial pacer.

My first mile is always my fastest.  I don’t try to go out fast but it always turns out that way.  And every time, I can’t keep up so I slow down and walk.  You think I would learn how to run a race with negative splits or not walk during a 5k.

Anyway, back to the race…There were 2 turn arounds so you got to see the faster and slower runners.  It was amazing to see how fast the leaders were running – 3 runners finished with a pace under 5 minutes.

The first water stop was around mile 1.5 and I couldn’t wait to walk.  I walked briefly. Around mile 2, I caught up to Holly and Paul but then you passed the same water stop around mile 2.5.  At that water stop I walked even longer and Paul and Holly pulled ahead again.

But the walking gave my energy that I needed to finish strong.  I was determined to break 29 minutes. I even at the last minute passed Holly (but not Paul). And I crossed at 27:30!!!  (over a minute faster than my last 5k! Woo Hoo!)

Holly reminded me that last week, I beat her by 15 seconds and this week only 3!!  However, I know soon, she will be back to beating me!!

img_2034

We went inside to get some chocolate milk, fruit & bagels and chatted while waiting for the results.

Holly is in the green top next to me

And we both won an awards. I got 2nd and Holly got 3rd!!

malta5k

Bonus – they started the awards with the oldies!  That was great as I needed to leave and get my extra miles done!

img_2027

This year, everyone got a small bottle of champagne and a gift card to a restaurant.  Mine was to the Recovery Room and for $50. (I wonder how much first place got? Something to shoot for next year.)

Race Splits: (positive, as usual)
mile 1 –  8:46
mile 2 – 8:56
mile 3 – 9:01
      .14 – 7:28

Garmin time: 27:27

found these signs all along the Zim Smith trail

The predicted rain never arrived and it was getting warmer with the sun even peeking out.  I drove one exit south to the Zim Smith Bike Path and parked at Leah’s Cakery.  (And yes, they were open!!)

img_2043

I had planned to run 7 more miles.  My legs were dead and they didn’t want to move but I was determined even if I walked a lot to get it done.

I went out 1.75 miles in one direction and returned to my car for water and then the same in the other direction. I was dragging.  My pace was slow. I was sweating profusely and I walked frequently but I survived.

img_2040

My reward was spinach mushroom quiche.  And then coffee with peach cheese crumb pie.  The best pie ever!!!

img_2037

perfect, right?

Believe it or not, I stopped at the grocery store, library, bank, etc.  on the way home. My legs will be mad at me tomorrow!

Happy Running! How was your weekend? Anything exciting like a race perhaps?

TOLT: NYC, Inspiring, Working, Etc.

thinking out loud

Since it is Thursday,  I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

Here’s what I’m thinking about today:

  • NYC

Image result for I love nY

I was lucky to have gone to the city for my 4th time this summer on Tuesday.

Unfortunately I was only there for 5 hours and my only reason was to see my dear Russian friend, Anna.

She was my host when I first visited Russia 14 years ago.

in 2006, my 3rd visit to Russia

We have stayed in touch and she visits as often as she can.  The last time was 3 years ago. This time she flew to the US for a wedding in Maine and decided to stop in NYC on her way back so I could see her.

So I took the bus down and we spent the day together.  It was wonderful.

img_1961

img_1998

went to the rooftop of the Standard Hotel

and had dessert and drinks

  • Inspiring

I should mention that Anna is very much into fashion.  Until this visit, I have only seen her in nice clothes and nice shoes.  (In fact one year, she got blisters from walking around NYC in those shoes so she had to borrow my sneakers. She made me crop them out of every photo.)

In 2012, when she came to visit, she watched me in a race. Everyone got an medal and she seemed intrigued.

Now 4 years later, she tells me that she is a runner!!!!!!!!!!  I was shocked!!

img_2004

And she ran 2 days in a row in Central Park!!  I feel like a proud parent!!!

She even mentioned that she wants to run a race and get a medal.  Maybe even come back to the US and run one with me…

  • Work

Yup, I have a job.  I’ve only worked 2 days so I can’t say much about it.  I do feel like I am in a college class where I need to work hard to learn the material and then perform at a certain level.  Let’s hope my “old” brain can absorb all this new stuff.

  • Racing

A lot of that.  Coming up is a 5k, a half marathon, 2 5ks, a  half marathon…

Image result for malta 5k

this Saturday

  • Fall

There’s pumpkin everything out but today the heat index was 90 degrees!?

Image result for pumpkin latte

I am have love-hate relationship with Fall.  I love the pretty colors of the leaves and running in the cooler temps.

image

the rail trail where I run often

But it means the days are shorter and winter will be arriving.  I HATE WINTER!!

Happy Running! What are you thinking about today?  Have you ever inspired someone to start running? Do you like Fall?

Sefcu 5K Race Recap & TOTR

Hundreds of runners and walkers participated in the 27th annual ...

Last year’s pic from the Gazette

I had no intention of running this race.  But FOMO got to me and it was only $15 so I signed up.

I had to run today anyway so now I would have company.  After having run 12 miles on Saturday and having another 5k this Saturday, I had no plans to do anything but run.

Since I am usually on Lake George for the holiday (and I did spend the whole day there on Sunday), the only time I ran this race was in 2008, my first year running.  My time was a not very impressive 33:03. So I thought that at least I could have a course PR for the day.

I am familiar with part of this course having trained for the Turkey Troy Trot on it and many of the HMRRC Winter Series races are also run here.

All I can say is that it is a boring course.  You don’t run it for the scenery.  It’s just office buildings and parking lots with a view of the highway.

Hundreds of runners and walkers participated in the 27th annual ...

photo from the Gazette 2015

I spent Sunday like this:

img_1948

After a long day in the sun, dinner out and fireworks on the lake, I didn’t get home until 11:30 pm.  And believe me, I was regretting my decision to run this race knowing all our friends would be out on the lake the next day.

But I dragged myself out of bed and drove to the race which was only 15 minutes away.  I immediately ran into Holly, my friend Tom, a former student and so many more runners whom I knew.

img_1950

I hung around talking to people that I hadn’t seen in a while.

img_1954

another cotton shirt – ugh!

Many runners were doing their warm-up runs but I just walked around (my pre-race warm-up).

Soon it was time to begin (and I noticed the battery was low on my  Garmin but it did last the 3.1 miles 🙂 ) and I lined up with Holly and Jackie (from the Turkey Trot and Freihofer’s running groups).

Holly who is in my age group and faster than me, took off and vanished.  I tried to start at a decent pace but my legs felt like lead from my 12 miles 2 days before.

The course, though boring, is fairly flat – just some uphills and downhills but nothing challenging.

Though it was perfect running in temps (in the 60’s), the sun was very strong and I was HOT.  I willed myself not to walk until the first water stop a little past the 1 mile mark.  It helped but I still felt like I was running a lot slower.

I walked again at the second water stop for an even longer time – but it was needed.  I wanted to finish strong but I was dragging.

All of sudden, I saw Holly. She had slowed down and I was able to pass her in the last half mile.

Eventually, I approached the finish line with not much left but I gave it my best shot and a even passed a guy at the last minute.

28:34 officially.  A minute slower than my last 5k which I thought was a disaster.  Still a course PR and lots of runners to chat with while waiting for the awards.

sefcu5k

And I won 1st in my age group, Holly second and Jackie third (in a younger age group).

img_1953

I guess it pays to be old – this my fourth age group 1st place win in a row.

img_1956

I was having FOMO looking at the FB pictures of my friends and hubby picnicking on Lake George but I am happy with my race.

TOLT: August Recap

Image result for august

Wow, the summer is flying by… Pumpkin lattes will be here before you know it…

So here’s how August went…

Weekday Runs:

Like July, August was HOT and humid most days and we had very little rain.  I was able to run at least 3-4 times each week. But I do not have a treadmill at home so they were mostly slow sweaty ones.

Because I was not working, I was able to run wherever. I was not forced to run near home or near work. So I tried to do my runs in many different places – Chestertown, Crossings, Corning Trail, Colonie Town Park, Nisky Trail, Zim Smith Trail, Rail Trail, UAlbany, etc.

I also ran with Alyssa 4 times. I met her on FB. These were, no doubt, besides my 5k races my faster runs. I struggle when I run with her but she gets me to run faster. She says that I make her faster .  Win-Win.

I re-connected with Barbara and Judy and ran with them each once. It’s more fun running with friends.

Long Runs:

There were TWO!!!.  I ran races or went boating on the weekends. So I managed to move these runs to Monday.

Total Mileage:

I ran 89 miles this month – finally some improvement.

aug

Races:

I ran three races this month – a 8.4 miler, a 10K and a 5K.

I was generally happy with how they went. I did not have PR goals and of course, they could have been faster.  I won age group awards in all three. That’s an achievement. The 8.4 and 10k races were very HILLY! The only one I felt could be better was the 5k.  We are, though, our own toughest critics.

Cross Training:

I was STILL unemployed and I played tennis. But not as often as in the beginning of the summer.

I DID NOT go to a single yoga class!! Someday I will do, I promise.

lheartspaceogo

I did workout at the gym at least three times.  I know that I could go more often but it’s better than nothing.

I walked to the tennis courts when I played nearby and occasionally did go for a walk. But not as often as when I worked.  I think that the tennis and the hiking (see below) made up for it, though.

img_1755

my favorite place to walk – rail trail

Other News:

I went hiking again…by myself and with some friends. Love it. Once to Pinnacle Point in Bolton Landing and then on four trails in Chestertown.

I took a trip to NYC with my two of my friends. We listened to Broadway tunes in Bryant Park and then walked to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see the Costume Institute. What a full but exciting day!!

img_1297

I also took a day trip to the Saratoga Race Track with a friend.  We had breakfast, watched and bet on the races and then stopped by the Casino (where I won $77).

img_1418

I spent two wonderful weekends with my knitting and mah jongg friends on the Schroon River. I did some running but mostly played tennis, knit or played mah jongg and ate.

Boating season continued and the weather was great.  I love it at the lake. It’s my “happy place.”

Feeling healthy so Life Is Good.

And I HAVE A NEW JOB!!!!!!!!! I will be working starting Sept.7.

Looking Ahead:

My next half marathon is September 18 and I am excited.

I do have a bunch of races coming up.  This is my list so far for the next 2 months:

  • 9-5-16 – Sefcu 5K
  • 9-10-16 – Malta 5k
  • 9-18-16 – Saratoga Palio Half Marathon
  • 9-25-16 – Arsenal City 5k ???
  • 10-01-16  – Apple Run 5K
  • 10-09-16 – Ramblefest Half Marathon
  • 10-15-16 – Great Pumpkin Challenge 10K

No monthly goals.

my motto for 2016

Since it is Thursday,  I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

Wednesday Word: Radical

Deb Runs

Every Wednesday, the Deb from Deb Runs will be providing a word about which to blog. Kind of like a nice little blog prompt. Posts can be fitness or health related, but don’t have to be, so really anyone can play along. Just be sure to link up with InLinkz on Deb’s main post, and share the love by reading and commenting on other’s participant’s posts.

This week’s word is:Image result for radical quotes

Macmillan defines “Radical” as “doing something new and very different from the usual way.”

Am I radical??

Hmmmmm…

  • Is it radical to start running for the first time at age 55?
  • Is it radical to run a 5k race several weeks into a training program when you’ve only run 1 mile so far?

Monday Running Update

mon r u
Last Week:

  • Monday –  Decided to spend the night at my friend’s house on the Schroon River. and woke up to perfect running weather (finally).  Too bad, my legs were sooo tired.

img_1577

They weren’t too tired to go for a hike.  I climbed to the top of Meade and Beckman Mountains.

img_1582

hardest of the 7 hikes that I have completed in the Chester Challenge but totally worth it. I even met the owner of the property.

I spent the rest of the day sitting by the river and knitting before heading home.

  • Tuesday – played tennis in the am and then we celebrated the summer with a pizza party. I played tennis again in the evening. Got lucky. It rained in between.
  • Wednesday – ran with Barbara in the am. It was great catching in up since we hadn’t seen each other in a while.

new Nikes – so far so good.

I walked the mall with my bff in the afternoon. In the evening, played mini golf with my tennis buds followed by dinner out.

we are better at tennis than golf LOL but it was fun

  • Thursday – subbed in a new tennis group in the am. Spent the afternoon in the pool with some tennis friends.

Met Alyssa for a run in the evening.

rained before we started and then more humid than ever

Then met an old friend at a local wine bar. These days are busy. Good thing I’m not employed. LOL

img_1663

  • Friday – played in a tennis robin for 3 hours. It was nice playing on clay for a change.

No running today. Just some errands including a car appt. Spent the evening playing major jongg.

  • Saturday – Ran a 5k race today. Felt lousy and didn’t run well.

the only good thing was wining my age group

So after the race, instead of my planned 7 miles, I drove up to the lake. My hubby brought a friend.  We (or they) jumped off cliffs, rode around in the boat, hung out in the bay and hiked (me and his friend) to a waterfalls.

Still feeling under the weather, I drove home instead of going out to dinner and spending the night on the boat.

  • Sunday – a real REST day.  The first one in many weeks – no running, no hiking, no tennis….

15 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday 10 mile run,
  • Tuesday – AM tennis, rest
  • Wednesday4 mile run with a friend
  • Thursday –  AM tennis, 4 mile run, hair appt
  • Friday –  AM tennis, rest
  • Saturday – 11 mile run, boating and/or mah jongg
  • Sunday – tennis, mah jongg on the Schroon River

Jailhouse Rock 5K Race Recap

This race sucked for many reasons but I’ll get into that later in this post.

img_1669

The race started at 8:30  at the Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa about 40 minutes away from my house. This nice local race usually has about 300 runners. There’s no parking lot but it is easy to find parking on the street.  There are bathrooms in the museum which is always a plus.

I’ve done this race 4 times before. I’ve always enjoyed it.

  • 2009 – 31:04
  • 2010 – 29:49
  • 2012 – 30:58
  • 2014 – 28:25

jhr12

I’m the one in the pink compression socks (2012)

I know that you walk up a hill to start the race and you finish running down this hill. Couldn’t be any better than that.

the hill is VERY steep

So I was pretty excited all week to run this race.  Do I hear PR possibility??

But silly me is taking advantage 100% of my unemployment status.   This is how my week went:

Sat – hilly hilly 10k, a walk
Sun – a run, 2 hikes
Mon – a run, a hard hike
Tues – tennis twice
Wed – a run, a walk
Thurs – tennis, a run
Fri – tennis (3 hrs)

Do you see the word rest there? Nope.  Me neither.

To make things worse, I woke up Saturday am with an upset stomach. I ate a little and took my tea with me and made my way to the race.

img_1670

I got there early enough to find a close spot and use the rest room (in the museum).  The weather was great – high 60’s – the best weather we’ve had for running this summer.

I was disappointed to not see many friends there.  I did see one lady that I know but hung out with 2 older guys. (One is in his 80’s and the other in his 60’s who is pretty fast.)

img_1690

unisex tech shirt

I felt nauseous and couldn’t even get a GU down. But I still had high hopes for the race.

img_1671

This time I didn’t forget to start my Garmin but I put it on too lose and so it turned to where I couldn’t see my pace.  (Probably not a bad thing.)

img_1733

I looked for my friend at the start. I thought he could pace me because he is slightly faster than me. But I couldn’t find him so I had to go at it alone.

The first mile was a gradual uphill but nothing steep.  I was going to try to hold back but my legs felt like lead so I didn’t need to worry about that.

I was hoping to run the whole thing but around halfway at the water stop, I was sick to my stomach and out of breath so I stopped and walked for a while.

Mile 2 seemed to be flat but every time I tried to speed up, I felt nauseous and out of breath so I walked again and again. I knew I had to give up on hopes of a PR and just finish the race.

I knew there was that downhill at the finish but I found myself walking AGAIN, right before it.

Finally I got to the steep downhill, I wish I was confident enough to go all out but I was afraid of falling flat on my face so I held back. And then my hat blew off and got stuck in my scrunchie.  I gave up trying to put my hat back on and held it in my hand. But it was hard to sprint with a hat in your hand so I just threw it to the side.

Then I saw the clock.  It was 28:xx and I ran as fast as I could.

I crossed at 28:33.

I was NOT happy.

I immediately saw my friend who was waiting for me.  He was worried because I was way ahead of him and then he saw me bonk and he finished ahead of me.  He was also very disappointed in his time so we walked to get my hat and commiserated together.

Well, at least I won my age group.

img_1673

And it was more useful that last week’s muffin.

img_1689

Splits:

mile 1 –  9:05
mile 2 – 9:24
mile 3 – 9:05

I hate to be a Debbie Downer because those paces aren’t bad.  But you don’t get many opportunities to race with this weather and a course with a downhill finish.

I decided after to race to bag my plan to go to the Zim Smith Bike Path to run 7 more miles.  (A LSD in preparation for my Sept. 18 Half.)

Instead I called my hubby to tell him that I was coming up to the lake. My hubby had a friend along so we had to play tour guide before heading to the bay to hang out with our friends.

The best part was that my hubby’s friend likes to hike so I had a partner to try and find Shelving Rock Falls.

and we did.

Unfortunately, I did not feel well all day and when they decided to go out to dinner in town, I left to drive home.

I’m already over my race performance.  It is what it is.  I’ve glad to be healthy enough to run. There will be other 5ks and there will be other bad races. (Maybe even some good ones 🙂 )

Since it is Sunday, I am linking with Ilka and Angela for the Sunday Fitness and Food Linkup.

Happy Running! Any racing plans this weekend? Ever suck on a race that should have been a PR?

Camp Chingachgook Challenge 10K Race Recap

ccc

I was looking forward to another Lake George race because I love the scenery.  This race is even more scenic than the Adirondack Distance Run and just as hilly.

I ran this race in 2012 as my first 10k ever.  I finished it at 1:09:07 but I was still recovering from ankle surgery.

After that, I ran more 10ks and this race again in 2014.  I finished in 1:04:54 (A big improvement).

This year, I hoped to improve upon my Camp Chingachgook Challenge time but not to PR due to the hills. (My 10K PR is 57:03). I suck at hills.

The course is out and back – which means hills both ways.

along the lake most of the way

no flat sections!

We’ve had an awfully hot, humid summer.  Today was no exception. 99% humidity and close to 80 degrees at the start.  There was a threat of rain and thunderstorms.  Normally I  hate to run in the rain but rain today would actually make things bearable.

I had my usual breakfast of hot cereal and left around 6:45 am.  I got there with no problems around 8:15 am, found parking, used the (real) restrooms and wandered around for a while exploring the grounds. I chatted with many runners who asked about the course.  I felt like an expert since I had run it twice already.

I quickly bumped into Lara, a fellow runner and former tennis teammate.

As I mentioned, although you run along the lake for the whole way, it is HILLY, I mean very HILLY.  I have run 2 races on the other side of the lake and this side, the hills are a lot steeper.

Lara and I run around the same pace.  Sometimes she beats me and sometimes I beat her. So we started out together and stayed together for awhile.

I started out too fast, of course, and I even tried to run up the hills.  But since I don’t train for hills and hate them, I soon tired and realized that if I wanted to finish upright, I better walk them and so I did.

Lara continued to trudge up the hills without walking.

Walking during a race does not make me happy but at times, the hills were so steep that I had trouble walking up them.  The only good thing was that many runners were walking and even those who did not, were running slow and I could pass them on the downhills.

So I used the same strategy as last week.  Walk, run, walk, run, walk up the hills and run fast down the hills.

It seemed to work. I got way ahead of Lara and many other runners that I started with.

What was strange was that since this race was also a half marathon that started an hour before but had the same finish, you saw the fast runners heading to the end when we slower runners barely started. (The half marathon winner finisher in 1:11:xx!!!)

As with all Lake George races (this being my 3rd this year), the road was not closed to traffic.  You had to move over to let cars go by and sometimes they were going in both directions and there were runners running in both directions.

The views were decent.  You had the lake on the right the first half and on the other side the second half.

I got to the turn around with a decent time – under 30 minutes but I had to battle the same hills to the finish line.

Now I was running with the faster very sweaty half marathoners.  I am not a sweater but the sun kept peaking out (I could wear my sunglasses because they kept fogging up due to the humidity) and it seemed that it was not going to rain.  So I was dripping in sweat.

Around mile 4, at only the 2nd water stop, I took a gu and a long walk and then continued my run/walk the uphills and sprint (if you can call it a “sprint”) the downhills.

Finally we turned left toward the lake and the race ended.  I was happy that it was on a downhill.  I even mustered up enough strength to sprint past a few runners. I crossed at 1:02:23 (gun time)

Yes, this was over 5 minutes slower than my 10K PR, but considering the conditions, I was pleased.  It was actually a course PR – over 2 minutes faster than the last time.

I got my medal and just walked around near the water.  Believe it or not, I was too hot to eat right away.

Then I went to get my shirt. (They didn’t have small sizes when I check in.)

I waited for Lara to finish (She was about 4 minutes behind me.)

img_1450

Then I played around getting medal pics while waiting for Alyssa to cross the finish line. The poor girl was running the half marathon.

Finally I saw her. Like everyone else, she had a slow race.

She jumped into the lake and then headed to take the shuttle bus back to the start.

By this time, I was getting hungry and sat down with Lara and some other runners that I knew.

I got some food…there were hot dogs, chicken, potato salad, cole slaw, bagels, and watermelon – quite a spread.

While we were waiting for the awards, it started to thunder and the skies opened up. Good thing, we were under cover.

I did come in first in my age group.

Normally they give out cool prizes and only to the winner. This year, they gave 3 deep and your prize was food.

img_1463

I won a chocolate muffin and it was delish.

It continued to rain so I decided to forgo my plans to get in more miles. My legs weren’t tired (thank you compression socks) but I was so sweaty. Those 2.8 miles would have to wait until the next day.

Splits:

mile 1- 9:36
mile 2- 10:25
mile 3 – 9:41
mile 4 – 11:01
mile 5 – 9:58
mile 6 – 10:10
.2 –  7:59

1:02:16 (Garmin time)

In looking at last year’s stats, the difference in the race was the last 2 miles.  I had a faster first half but slowed down more the second half.

So was I disappointed?  Not really. I don’t train on hills. And walking on the hills saved my legs.  I beat my time on this course from two years ago but I know I can do better.

I used to walk up the whole hill.  Now I walk and run.  Maybe someday I’ll have the strength and/or confidence to run up the hills.

I did enjoy the race.  I never regret a race.  And my legs felt fine after.  I was even able to run the next two mornings.

The race was the beginning of a weekend with friends – we ate, chatted, knitted, hiked, watched the Olympics, saw a movie (Pitch Perfect)…

Monday Running Update

mon r u
Last Week:

  • Monday –  For the past 33 years, my friend (former co-worker) & I had gone to breakfast at the race track.

img_1418

Sometimes after breakfast and watching the horse warm up, we stay for the races.  We did this year and had a lot of fun betting – mostly successfully but I don’t bet a lot of money so I don’t win a lot of money.

Afterward we decided to stop off at the casino cuz I had never been. Beginners luck had me winning $77.  We celebrated with ice cream.

  • Tuesday – After another day of car shopping, I ran at the Colonie Town Park and then played tennis.
img_1426

unfortunately I waited until 4 pm when it was 90 degrees! At least there was shade.

  • Wednesday –  We finally got the rain that we needed but the result was oppressive humidity. I was running with a friend which made it more bearable.

at the Corning Bike Path

  • Thursday – I played tennis in the am and I couldn’t believe how humid it was!!! (I don’t know how you Southerners do it.)  Since they predicted a heat index of 100 degrees, I reluctantly ran (3 slow miles) on the treadmill at the gym. Then worked out with a friend, went out for dinner and a walk on the rail trail.
  • Friday – AM tennis was cancelled so I did stuff around the house. Then I went with my hubby to pick up his new truck. We had two parties to go to – one at our marina and one for the hubby’s tennis team.  Yup, we managed to go to both.  (carb loading for my race the next day, right?)
  • Saturday – Ran a HOT, HUMID, HILLY 10k.

a course PR and won my age group

After the race, I headed up to spend the rest of the day at my friend’s house on the Schroon River.  This was a “knitting” weekend. Rained on and off all day so only managed a walk. Perfect knitting weather.

  • Sunday – I got in a run before everyone got up. After breakfast, I talked them into 2 hikes.

Then there was lunch, more knitting and some swimming.
20 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday 4 mile run, hiking
  • Tuesday – AM tennis, tennis pizza party, PM tennis
  • Wednesday4 mile run with a friend, mall walk with bff, mini  golf /dinner
  • Thursday –  AM tennis, pool party, 4 miles with a friend
  • Friday –  AM tennis, rest, mah jongg
  • Saturday – 5k race + 7  more miles
  • Sunday – boating
