to join up with Coco & Deborah for their ultimate coffee date.
1.Over coffee…
I’d tell you that I do not own any exercise equipment. So I could take some online classes. Many are even offered free.
I have not.
I actually miss my little gym
Have you taken any online classes? Do you miss going to the gym?
2.Over coffee…
I’d tell you that I ran the NYC Half Marathon Virtually. Does it count as my 42nd half??
NYC HM
Do you plan to run your cancelled races virtually?
3.Over coffee…
I’d tell you that I hate working from home but at least I am making the effort to get dressed (does workout clothes count?) and go for a 30 minute walk at lunch every day. I am lucky to have a few nearby trails.
How are you coping with working from home? Are you getting outside more?
4.Over coffee…
I’d tell you that I can work from home thanks to technology.
my work helper
We use ZOOM for meetings and Webex to teach.
I’m even using ZOOM for meeting up with my friends.
Anyone else using technology more? ZOOM meet ups anyone?
5.Over coffee…
I’d tell you that I normally either cook or go out to eat. Rarely do I do take-out but I want to support local businesses so I’ve ordered here many times (do not judge):
so glad that my favorite ice cream place did not close
How are you supporting local businesses?

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice…
1. I runfess…
I have finally graduated from PT and doctor appointments.(Perfect timing considering what is happening right now.)
So I have extra $$ for racing. LOL (if there were any happening…)
But I am slacking off on any of those exercises that I should be dong to strengthen my hips, calves, glutes, quads, etc.
Do you continue your PT prescribed exercises once you are healthy?
2. I runfess…
I broke up with my chiropractor. (and that was before she closed her practice…)
I started going for ART when I strained my calf and then I was going monthly for tune-ups but once my foot started hurting in November, I stopped. And now she is pregnant.
Do you regularly go to a chiropractor?
3.I runfess…
I have now registered for SEVEN half marathons for the year…. (if they were cancelled, I ran them virtually)
Now that my foot no longer hurts, I’m thinking about #8. Crazy, right?
hot, hilly and humid
Update: My April Half has been postponed until August 29 so this one won’t have to happen. Since I am running all my races (virtually), I am sticking with one half per month. 3 down…9 to go. LOL
4. I runfess…
I almost registered for the Cherry Blossom 10 MiIer.
I have always wanted to run this race. I didn’t enter the lottery but I found out that so many runners offer bib transfers. Flights were cheap. It was tempting but I only worked two days at the Bar Exam instead of three. That meant I lost my extra $$$ plus Bermuda was expensive.
(Turns out it didn’t matter because the race was cancelled.)
Next year…Perhaps?
5.I runfess…
I did not register for the 2020 NYC Marathon because at the time I was still experiencing foot pain. I wasn’t sure if it would ever go away. I did not want to run 26.2 miles like that. It was hard enough without foot pain.
But when only 2% of those who entered the lottery got in, I felt guilty that I had a timed entry (from Helderberg to Hudson Half 2019) and I did not register.
The race was cancelled after Hurricane Sandy so technically 2021 is the 50th running of the race.
So maybe next year… (If that foot pain stays away and I can get back to running at a decent pace or I get in by the lottery.)

And NO I’m not posting about anything related to the Corona virus…I’ll leave that to the other bloggers lol
My topic today is: How to be a Runner Without Breaking the Bank
I know most of you love your gadgets and running outfits but you can spend little money and still be a runner.
Here’s what I recommend (from personal experience):
1. Buy an older version of a GPS watch. They will most likely do what you need (without the bells and whistles.) If the battery dies, surf the web and just buy another. I’ve found mine under $100 on Walmart.com.
I’ve bought the 205 three times already
2. Make some DIY items. For example, cut off knee socks instead of buying expensive arm sleeves. Wear two pairs of cheap gloves instead of lined expensive ones.
Like my arm warmers?
You can even use two tennis balls to roll tight muscles.
I put them in a sock and tied the end.
from https://www.sheknows.com
3. Register for races early or with discount codes. Many bloggers are race ambassadors and have codes. Discount codes are often offered on special dates like National Running Day.
4. Buy your running shoes online. Once you know what you like, you can find deals on them at various online stores like Zappos, Runner Warehouse, Amazon, etc.
5. Running clothes from Walmart, Kohl’s and Target work fine. If you have to run in name brands, try online sites like Poshmark, title9 and many others that offer cheaper prices.
This Target jacket is about 10 years old. I have it in white too. I am also wearing two pairs of Dollar store gloves.
HappyRunning! Any other ideas for saving money? Have you used any of my ideas? Please share.

My Topic today is about my Neuroma.
If you’ve been reading blog, you are aware since November 20 and until recently, I’ve been suffering with foot pain….diagnosed as a possible Neuroma.
Being a stubborn runner, I did run.
Here are some of the things that I’ve learned that may help you if you ever suffer from one (and I hope you never do.):
1.Rest and Anti-Inflammatory Medications – The onset of a Neuroma is usually gradual. In some cases (like mine), a Neuroma can occur suddenly. In these cases, taking a few days (or weeks) to rest and allow your body to heal could be beneficial. Similar to rest, a short course of anti-inflammatory medication (over the counter or prescribed) can also allow your foot to heal, if the onset of the Neuroma symptoms is relatively sudden.
2.Injections- Cortisone is basically an anti-inflammatory. When injected in the area of the Neuroma, it can reduce the swelling in the nerve and help it to heal. Other types of injections also exist: a dilute alcohol solution is sometimes used to chemically deaden the nerve. Vitamin B12 can also be used.
3.Physical Therapy- There are circumstances where PT can be effective. Tight calf and hamstring muscles place added pressure on the ball of the foot. Physical therapists can help reduce pressure on the ball of the foot by working on the stretch and laxity in the calf and hamstring muscles. They may also use other tools such as ART, ultrasound heat or lasers.
4.Padding- There are a variety of pre-made inserts designed to alleviate the painful symptoms of a Neuroma. The easiest to use is a small adhesive cushion called a metatarsal pad. This pad is a soft cushion with a triangular, teardrop shape. When effective, the metatarsal pad shifts weight in front of the Neuroma, allowing it to heal. If runners cannot find a comfortable over the counter insert, a custom orthotic can be made by your doctor.
my mummy foot lol
5.Shoes – Shoes with a heel exceeding 2 inches, and shoes with narrow toe boxes place increased stress on the toes and the bones along the ball of the foot. This can aggravate a Neuroma. This is also true for running shoes that have tapered, snug-fitting toe boxes. Being mindful of shoe choice can help a Neuroma to resolve. Runners need to try out different shoes to find the one that works best for them.
perhaps?? – lower heal drop and more cushion on the ball of foot in addition to a wide toe box
**Pain Relief Cream – Voltaren (or generic) – This is prescription only and can be rubbed onto the painful area of the foot.
I never thought I would run again without pain. But I am. For how long? No one knows. If you have a Neuroma, you are not cured. The pain may return.
If you have read my previous post, you know that I tried all of the above in this order:
Rest – for 3 weeks
Naproxen – for 2 weeks
Cortisone shot
PT – for 8 weeks (with ART, heat ultrasound and laser therapy)
to join up with Coco & Deborah for their ultimate coffee date.
1.Over coffee…
I’d tell you that I’ve started taking yoga classes monthly. These two hour classes are geared for runners and every month, the teacher picks a different part of the body:
November – lower back & spine
December – upper back & neck
February – feet & calfs
March – quads & hamstrings
April – glutes and piriformis
Do you do yoga? If you do, do you do it on your own or sign up for classes?
2.Over coffee…
I’d tell you that I have my THIRD half marathon of the year coming up. New York City Half Marathon. Last year I ran it recovering from a calf injury.
I was hoping to be trained for it this year…
Nope, my foot has had other things to say.
Still excited about running through Times Square again. And I hope the temps are warmer than last year.
NYC Half Marathon
Are you running the NYC Half? If so, let’s meet up!
Do you repeat Half Marathons? Why or why not?
3.Over coffee…
I’d tell you that my running friends & I have planned our FOURTH race-cation.
We’ve already done Wineglass HM in Corning, NY, Hot Chocolate 15K in Brooklyn and a Rock n Roll HM in Montreal.
Our next one is in October – Smuttynose HM in Hampton Beach, NH. We rented a house for 4 days…
Do you go on race-cations with your running friends? Anyone run the Smuttynose Half running are have run the Smuttynose Half?
4.Over coffee…
I’d tell you that I am still trying to figure out what is the best running shoe for me … yes, after 10 years of running.
I tried Altra Torin Plush. Nope!!
I loved my Nikes but after the strained calf muscle, I switched to Mizuno Inspires.
Now with the foot neuroma….
Altra Lone Peaks will be great for trail this summer, though
I tried Brooks Ghost. Nope.
Next up…Hokas?
Anyone else have problems finding the right running shoe? Anyone else run with a neuroma? What do you think of Hokas?
5.Over coffee…
I’d tell you that I am so over winter running. Wearing a skirt in Bermuda just wet my appetite.
Are you as anxious as I am for warmer temps? Did you get away this winter to a summerish climate to run?
Over coffee…
I’d tell you that I’m not big on ambassador programs. In fact, there are only two that I now am part of.
One is Skirt Sports. Actually I am this year a Legacy Ambassador which means I have already been an ambassador for several years. I don’t have to promote as in the past but you bet I will because it’s the only brand of skirt (tights and capris) that I wear. (Get 15% with this code: SS15Dar562)
But for the first time, I am a Freihofer Run for Woman race ambassador. I am surprised and excited about this!! It is my favorite race and am honored to chosen and can’t wait to promote it.
Register for this race and get $5 off with the code AMBSS5
Are you an Ambassador for any products or races? If so, which one(s)?
Do you wear Skirt Sports?
Are you running or have you ever run Freihofer Run for Women?

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice…
1. I runfess…
I still ran ALL month even though my foot pain was no better…
but it was no worse.
2. I runfess…
I ran another Half Marathon without completing ALL my long runs.
4 mile race instead of 12 LSD
3.I runfess…
Even though I was dealing with constant foot pain, I still registered for THREE more Half Marathons..
May – Steel Rail
September – Saratoga Palio
October – Smuttynose
Girls WEEKEND!! YEAH!
That’s now SEVEN for the year….
4. I runfess…
When I heard that ZOOMA Bermuda Half Marathon would run out of medals for the slower runners, I wanted to finish faster than I had originally planned.
luckily they did NOT run out of medals because I did not have a good finish time
5.I runfess…
I almost registered for the 2020 NYC Marathon…
Yeah, I said that I was ONE and DONE!
But it is the 50th anniversary of the race….
I DID NOT register (even though I qualified with a timed-entry) because the site went down and I was working at the time…PHEW! Relieved.
The race was cancelled after Hurricane Sandy so technically 2021 is the 50th running of the race.
So maybe next year… (If I can conquer that foot pain and get back to running at a decent pace…)

I have already run 41 half marathons. Many I have loved and would love to run again and then again, there were those that I wished I hadn’t.
I already posted about reasons to choose a race so my topic today is: Reasons Not to Choose A Half Marathon
1.A Poorly Marked or Inaccurate Course
No one likes a course that is short and long and even worse, one that you get lost on.
glad I was not running the full…many went the wrong way and ran a shortened course
2.A Boring or Ugly Course
Running in traffic or running loops and worse, just a route with nothing scenic to look at.
started & ended at a brewery…run in parking lots and along a busy highway
3.The Swag
An ugly medal or NO medal… or a uni-sex shirt (that doesn’t fit) or even a COTTON shirt.
half medal the size of a quarter and a cotton race shirt
4.The Logistics.
Poorly marked location, unorganized start/finish, not enough parking or not enough portapotties…
all of the above for this RNR race..
5.Food/Drink
Not enough water stops or water stops that run out of water. Unappetizing Post-race refreshments or lack of.
another dud of a RNR race
Other Reasons:
Cost – Too expensive
racing in Vegas is fun but not cheap!!
Deferral policies – none or too expensive
Crowd Support – none or very little
Size – too big or too small
25k of my new friends
Knowing No One – not fun to run a race all alone
running solo in Fla.
Happy Running! Any other reasons to offer on why you would avoid picking a race? Which of the above, have you chosen? Please share.
Thanks to Laurie from Meditations in Motion, I discovered a link up started by blogger Heather Gerwing. The fourth Saturday of each month, Heather invites other bloggers to share their “Four Somethings”: Something Loved, Something Said, Something Learned, Something Read. If you are a blogger, you may post your Four Somethings too!
Oops I’m late on January and early on February…
1. Something Loved.
Visiting NYC.
This may be repetitive but there will come a time when I don’t get to go here as often. So I feel fortunate that in January I went twice…
Once for work:
And once for a race:
and Deborah
I always make sure that I take advantage of the opportunity…whether it be a meet-up with friends, trying a new restaurant, seeing a show or just going for a walk or run.
What is your favorite city to visit?
2. Something Said.
I read this on the Gaboronerrunner’s IG post and it seemed so appropriate as it was said by Kobe Bryant:
I have self doubt. I have insecurity. I have fear of failure… We all have self doubt. You don’t deny it, but you also don’t capitulate it. You embrace it.
This so applies to running… especially when tackling running challenges.
I think I feel this way at EVERY race starting line….
Do you?
3. Something Learned.
I have always said “Pain is temporary.”
But during my recent foot discomfort, I learned that maybe pain is not temporary…maybe it will persist. For days, weeks, months….
If running is important in your life, then you run with pain.
we both had foot pain during this tough half marathon
(Of course, not if the pain is something that will be made worse if you continue to run with it.)
Do you still run when you have pain?
4. Something Read.
I recently finished reading this book. In fact, I couldn’t put it down. I read the whole thing on the bus ride to and from NYC.
The story follows two timelines that slowly intertwine. The first timeline describes the life and adventures of a young girl named Kya as she grows up isolated in the marsh of North Carolina from 1952–1969. The second timeline follows a murder investigation of Chase Andrews, a local celebrity of Barkley Cove, a fictional coastal town of North Carolina.
I loved this book. It’s a story of survival, abuse, loneliness, love, prejudice, murder.
And yes, many have said that it didn’t seem realistic but if you can get beyond that, you will enjoy it.
Have you read this book? If so, what did you think?
4. Something New.
Chair Yoga. Who knew that this would add a smile to my boring day at work.
So relaxing. No equipment needed nor any clothes to change into.
Anyone else try chair yoga? If so, did you like it?

I have already run 40 half marathons (and 41st next Sunday)!! Crazy, huh?
So my topic today is: How Do You Pick Your Half Marathon?
1.For the BQ or PR Opportunity
Not that any 13.1 miles is easy but you deliberate;y pick a flat course or a downhill course.
Nothing wrong with wanting a good finish time (if that what matters and it does to many runners.)
not why I picked the Helderberg 2 Hudson Half but it was mostly downhill
2.For the Challenge.
This may be the reverse of #1 but you pick a race because of the elevations, the hills or you choose a trail or an Ultra race because you’ve never done one before.
not why I chose the Pelham Half but boy was it hilly
3.Because Your Friends Are Running It.
Racing is always more fun when you do it with friends. There is also FOMO. So you sign up for a race only because others are running the same one.
yes, that is why I ran the Wineglass Half
4.Because Of Its Location.
You run a race only because of its location. 50 Staters, this is you. (Seems nuts to me but many runners do want to run in all 50 states!?)
Or you choose a race because you live nearby, you are vacationing there already or you are there for work or a conference.
because my college roommate just bought a house near the Surf Town Half
5.For Its Scenic Views.
The difficulty of course does not matter at all. You run this race because of the mountain views or because you will be running along the ocean or over a famous bridge.
loved running along the ocean during the Asbury Park Half
Other Reasons:
Cost – Everyone loves a bargain.
Bling – Who doesn’t love a cool medal?
Swag – Hoodie instead of a shirt…yes!
Food – Ice cream post-race…I’m there!
I’ve mostly picked my 40 half marathons because of reasons #3 (I rarely race alone) and #4 (most of them are local or where I know someone living nearby.)
Happy Running! How do you pick your big races? Please share.
It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice…
1. I runfess…
I diagnosed my own foot problem. Doesn’t Google know everything?
I was too impatient to wait for my doctor to come up with something.
Have you Googled your injury instead seeking a professional’s opinion?
2. I runfess…
I did go to a Doctor but I did not follow his advice. Again too impatient. I abstained from running for 3 weeks and I wasn’t getting better so I ran.
And my foot still hurt but it did not feel worse.
Have you ignored a doctor’s advice regarding resting an injury?
3.I runfess…
Once I started running, my foot felt slightly better (at least it did in my mind). So I continued running… cautiously with lots of rest days.
Has running ever made an injury feel less painful?
4. I runfess…
So my foot felt a little better while running that 6 miler so I ran a New Year’s Day race. Not sure if it was because I ran faster or the course was hillier but my foot hurt more!!!
smiling kinda but because it was over.
Anyone else impatient when injured?
5.I runfess…
Once I re-started my weekend long runs, I decided to run the Fred LeBow Half Marathon in NYC … even though I skipped the 7, 9, 11 and 12 milers. Yikes.
ignore that smile…HILLS + sore foot = 😦 BUT no DOMS + foot no worse = 🙂
Even run a half marathon under-trained or with only 1 double digit run?
