Breathing When Running

It’s Friday so I’m also linking up with Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday Five linkup! Join in! Don’t forget to link back to your hostess and visit some other bloggers.

My Topic today is: Breathing.

but NO I don’t wear one while I run

I think that wearing a mask has gotten to me.

Or maybe it’s adjusting to the heat and humidity.

And that awful pollen in the air.

Anyway, I’d had a hard time breathing.

So I got to thinking about Breathing when Running.

I’m not a coach or have any medical expertise.  All I know if what I’ve been told by coaches and what I’ve read so you can take what I say below with a grain of salt.

1.Deep Belly Breathing is better.

Deep belly breathing is also called diaphragmatic breathing. (Here’s how to do it – https://www.verywellhealth.com/how-to-breathe-with-your-belly-89853)

How to Do Belly Breathing Like a Pro | Yuri Elkaim

It is said to be more efficient because it uses the entire capacity of the lungs. It helps to increase your VO2 max. (This site will tell you what this is – https://www.cnet.com/health/your-vo2-max-explained/)

VO2 Max: Compare your cardio fitness to your peers.

2.Breathe Through Your Mouth

You need to take in oxygen and expel C02 as efficiently as possible when you run.

Obviously, you can’t take in as much air through your nose as you can through your mouth. So it makes sense to mainly breathe through your mouth when running.

Image titled Control Breathing While Running Step 4

I remember when I started running, my coach stressed to us to NEVER breathe through our nose.  He said to keep your tongue against the back of you bottom teeth and concentrate taking in air through your mouth.  I don’t always remember to do that but when I am out of breath, I do and it works!

Yes, of course, you can breathe through your nose but it will slow you down!! (Nose breathing is harder.)

3. Slow Down if you are out of breath (or have a side stitch).

If you are out of breath, just slow down your pace, take some deep breaths and then you can speed up again.

How To Ease Painful Side Stitches When Running | Wilderman ...

Many times if you have a pain in your side, it’s because you are holding your breath or breathing too shallow. Just breathe in deeply several times and it should go away.

4.Use Proper Breathing Rhythms

I admit that I rarely do this.  I have tried but as with anything else, it takes practice.

  • Easy runs – 3:3 (three steps while breathing in and three steps while breathing out)
  • Medium-intensity runs: 2:2
  • Maximum and high-intensity runs: 1:1  (For me this is only crossing the finish line at the end of a race lol)

What Is The Best Way To Breathe While Running

5. Do What Feels Natural

In other words, you are more comfortable breathing through your nose, then run that way.  There are many breathing patterns.

Do whatever works for you.

Happy Running! Any other suggestions related to breathing? Do you get out of breath when you run? Do you even think about breathing correctly when you run? Please share.

Taking the Challenge

It’s Friday so I’m also linking up with Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday Five linkup! Join in! Don’t forget to link back to your hostess and visit some other bloggers.

My Topic today is: Run/Walk Across a State Challenge.

When there aren’t any races, there are so many reasons to run a virtual race or sign up for a virtual challenge.  One of the popular ones is running or walking across a state.  I’m not sure if every state has this challenge but I know that the larger ones such as IL, NY and TN do.

What’s neat is that you do not have to live in the state to sign up for the challenge.

It started on May 15 and lasts until August 31. There are different distances that you can sign up for depending on how many miles or kms you want to complete.

Don’t worry if you haven’t sign up yet.  You have until July 5!! And you can enter your miles retroactively.

Originally I signed up for the Across NYS 500K (Thruway Challenge).

Then I realized that if I added my walking miles, I would be finished too soon so I changed to the 1000k option.  That’s 6 miles a day!! Yikes 🙂

Certificate

But here are my five reasons to sign up for this challenge (before July 5):

1.It’s Virtual

In other words, you can do your miles at any time and any place. You can fit your miles into your work schedule.  You can run or walk when the weather conditions are more favorable.

hot morning run

2.Keeps You Motivated.

You enter your miles onto the website.  You track them.  You see your progress and you can see how others are doing, as well (for those competitive people).

as of 6/9 – I’ve got a lot of work to do!!

Also when we pay for something, we are more likely to participate, right?

3. You Can be Part of a Team.

When you sign up you can choose a team.  Then you can track the team’s progress and ranking.

I’m on a team of 11 (SoleSisters).

there are 853 teams!!!!!!!! (as of 6/10)

4.You Can Walk.

Not everyone wants the pressure of running a lot of miles especially in the summertime.  Or you may even be recovering from an injury.

This challenge allows you record walking miles.  You don’t have to link up to a tracking device.  It’s on the honor system.

In fact, more of my miles are walking/hiking miles than running ones.

just a walk on a trail

5.Support an Important Charity

The donations and a portion of the proceeds of the challenge benefit Covid-19 Relief in Your State:

Direct Relief works in the U.S. and internationally to equip doctors and nurses with life-saving medical resources to care for the world’s most vulnerable people.

One more:

6.Swag

One of a kind shirts and gaiters (face coverings) will be sent to ALL participants. Medals will be awarded to those that cross the VIRTUAL FINISH LINE!

Ultimate Coffee Date for June

It’s that time of the month…

to join up with Coco & Deborah for their ultimate coffee date.

1.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I ran my LAST virtual half marathon.

I had already signed up the real half marathons in March, April and May. But as you know, they were all cancelled.

I would be getting the swag so I felt like I should actually run them. I did not race them but just ran/walked that distance alone on three different routes.

I am DONE. I hope the next half marathon is a REAL one.

Did you run any long races that were cancelled virtually?

2.Over coffee…

I’d tell you before I was working from home, I would run after work for 3 miles.  Some days I did not run at all.

Now being at home everyday, I have been on most days running before work, walking at lunch and then hiking after work.

So I have gone from 0-3 miles a day to 6-10 miles a day.

Of course that will end…mostly likely when I return to the office in the fall.

Have you increased your mileage during the pandemic?

3.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I have started seeing my friends. After 10 weeks of self-isolation, we have decided to see each other…safely, of course.

Have you relaxed your social distancing yet?

4.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I mentioned that I finally got a shot for my painful foot.  The pain went away immediately.  Though it appears that it does rear its ugly head from time to time. Still!!

like here between miles 4 and 7

Anyone else experience intermittent pains?

5.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that there’s no shame in walking. To prove it, I had one of my slowest 5ks and even posted my time.

I believe this race last year may have been the last time that I ran FAST.  After that, there was marathon training, foot pain, then pandemic.

Runfessions for May

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I did not run at all on my birthday.  I usually run miles or kms to commemorate my new age but this was how I dressed that day:

this was May 9!! There was snow.

Do you usually celebrate your birthday with a run?

2. I runfess…

Once I experienced foot pain back in November, I ditched my favorite Mizunos and bought:

  • Altras (and returned them)
  • Brooks (and returned them)
  • Hokas (and returned them)
  • Another style of Hokas (would return them but FF is closed)

and then ordered the same Mizuno Wave Inspires as I had originally. (15s on the left and 16s on the right)

Shoe Review: Mizuno Wave Inspire 16 | Fleet Feet

Did you try different shoes only to return to your originals?

3.I runfess…

I pay attention to matching my clothes but otherwise I’m pretty lax about things.  I have even worn new items in a race.

During my April Virtual Half Marathon, I got blisters on my feet. I wore good socks but then I remembered the
Karrimor Anti Blister socks (bought on sale at EMS) that I have been wearing for long races even during my full marathon.

And so I started wearing them again. My feet still ached but NO blisters. D’uh.

Did you pay close attention to comfort or fashion when racing?

4. I runfess…

I lost a pair of my favorite compression calf sleeves 😦

I tracked them down to having worn them last August (the advantage of having a blog and posting lots of running pics.)

I wear them a lot in the summer because most of skirts have pink in them…grrrr

Maybe they’ll turn up. Stay tuned.

Do you lose or misplace running clothes items?

5.I runfess…

I’ve been running a lot of virtual races.  What else is there?

I only wear wear a watch when I run an actual race.  And since I don’t really consider them races and don’t actually “race” virtual ones, I haven’t been wearing a watch. To calculate distance I either run where I already know the distance or I start my Apple watch and run half the distance and turn it off at that point.

The problem is many of the companies that offer virtual races want you to post your finish time.

So what do I do?

I make up my time.  Since I do feel a little guilty, I post a very slow one (which actually may be accurate for the way I am running these days.)

Anyone else do this? Don’t report me to the racing Gods!

What I miss about racing

It’s Friday so I’m also linking up with Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday Five linkup! Join in! Don’t forget to link back to your hostess and visit some other bloggers.

My Topic today is: The Racing Void.

I have been know to run as many as 40 races in a year.  Usually at least 30. Well, not this year.

Of course, I miss all the people involved in a race: my friends, the other runners, the volunteers, the crowd but here are some other little things that I also miss:

1.FlatMes

You know, planning your race outfit the night before and posting a pic.

Of course, I always plan my outfit but it’s not the same if you are not going to a race.

2.Pinning on a Bib.

It’s one of the things that makes a race different than a run or a virtual race.

3.Pre-Race Jitters.

No matter how many races I have run, I always feel nervous waiting at the start line.

4.Swag and Awards.

There’s something special about someone putting a medal over your head or handing you an age group award.

5.Post Race Refreshments

Free Ice Cream,

Chocolate Milk or even a Dark n Stormy.

They just taste better when you’ve earned them in a race.

Happy Running! Do you miss any of the above? Are there some other things that you miss when you are not racing? Please share.

Going Virtual? Why Not!

It’s Friday so I’m also linking up with Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday Five linkup! Join in! Don’t forget to link back to your hostess and visit some other bloggers.

My Topic today is: Virtual Racing.

When there aren’t any races, there are so many reasons to run a virtual race.  In fact, I can’t think of any reason NOT to sign up for one.

But here are my five reasons to Go Virtual:

1.You have NO scheduled races.

In other words, these races will not interfere with your training plan.

6 - You know you're a runner when you plan your social calendar around your training and races.

um…mine is pretty empty

2.Many virtual races are FREE.

It will not cost you anything to sign up. And if you get injured and can’t do the race, you will not lose any money.

a different theme and color each week…you can run ANY distance

3.You can add to your SWAG collection.

If you do pay to sign up for a virtual race, they often send you awesome swag such as cool medals, shirts, glasses, etc.

pretty sweet swag..I would have signed up if I didn’t already run the real one

4.It will MOTIVATE you to get out there and run or walk the miles.

Especially if others have signed up or you join a FB group for that race.  Races, virtual or not, will make you more accountable to being active.

most of my running friends are participating in this one

5.Charities and Running Companies NEED your money..

When this is over, we do want to have races.  The companies that organize them are losing a lot of money now.  The charities that have been supported by racing are not getting money now.

a BIG local race that will be losing so much $$

One More..

**You can do the races ANY TIME and ANYWHERE. And they will not get CANCELLED.

If the weather is not ideal, just change the time or date of the race.  You can also pick a scenic course or a flat course…whatever pleases you.

Happy Running! Have you run any virtual races? Which ones have your enjoyed? Please share.

Ultimate Coffee Date for May

It’s that time of the month…

to join up with Coco & Deborah for their ultimate coffee date.

1.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that this time EVERY year since 2005, I have been in Florida running, playing tennis and getting a tan at the beach.

I even run in a 5k race

Do you have an annual trip that you look forward to every year?

2.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that the Steel Rail Half Marathon race was postponed until Oct 11.  I really wanted to run this race but NOT a week after another half marathon.  No refunds but you could do it virtually by May 17 and receive all the swag. Not sure I made the right decision but I did decide to run it virtually.

2017 – my Half marathon PR

What would you have done?

3.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that May is usually my favorite month. My Birthday. Florida Tennis vacation, Annual Tulip Fest. Beginning of boating season. Freihofer Run for Women, my favorite race. My hubby’s b-day. I could go on and on.

I kinda feel like May was cancelled.

at least no one told the tulips the bad news

What is your favorite month?

4.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I am cooking more, eating more, drinking more wine!!  This pandemic is not healthy.

Anyone else guilty of this?

5.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I miss racing and traveling so much that I already signed up for a race next February!! (It should be safe to fly by then…)

Pandemic Runfessions for April

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I have not worn clothes other than running clothes since I started working from home on March 17.  It’s not because they are comfortable. It’s because no one is seeing me and it saves time getting out the door to go for a walk or run.

I do worry that my work clothes may no longer fit.

Do you wear running clothes even when you are working from home?

2. I runfess…

I have spent a lot of time searching for new places to walk or run.  Usually I ran near wherever I was working.  Now working from home makes me want to leave the neighborhood as quick as possible and discover a different environment.

Peebles Island State Park

Did you run in different locations or did you stay close to home?

3.I runfess…

I never ran with a mask on.

I know you think I should have.  I always wore a buff around my neck and could have pulled it up if I felt I was dangerously close to someone else.  But I never felt that way.

Did you run in a mask?

4. I runfess…

I signed up for the Peleton app since it was free for 90 days.  And there were so many really great outdoor running workouts that I could do.  I went as far as pre-loading them.  But unfortunately, they still need an Internet connection and I do not  have unlimited data on my phone so I’ve only used them a few times and the shorter ones.  They would be a lot more useful for me if I had a treadmill.

Peloton - Peloton App Expands to Include Outdoor Runs

Do you use the Peleton app outdoors?

5.I runfess…

I may be enjoying my walks more than my runs. I think it is because they are more scenic and I love taking pictures of nature. I am walking everyday at lunch but as I have mentioned, I am always dressed in running clothes and so I could be running at that time. It is so easy to lose that running mojo when you are not racing.

Is it just me? Are you still motivated to run when they are no races?

My Topic today is: What To Do When Your Races Are Cancelled

Another post about the pandemic! Sorry! It’s our New Normal.

1.Just Run for Fun.

No training plan!

Just run whenever you want. Wherever you feel like.  And run as many miles as you feel comfortable with and at any PACE.  Leave that watch home!!

2.Sign up for a Virtual Race.

There are so many offered.

Many are FREE!!

all distances and all at no cost

There are also ones that you pay for and it will support an important charity.  They may even send you a shirt and/or medal.

for $20 you get a medal and shirt. use code AMBSS5 at freihofersrun.com

3.Find a New Way to Stay Active.

You had no time before because you were training for a race.

Why not try biking? Spinning? Yoga? Hiking?

4.Explore Locations where you’ve never been.

Again when you were training, you were looking for maybe flat routes and ones that allowed for a certain distance.

Now it is the time to explore places that may never be used for running.  Those beautiful trails!!!

5. Stay Positive and Look Ahead. Plan for those Future Races.

Races scheduled for the fall may not work out because there will be so many re-scheduled races lumped together in the same month.

So look ahead to 2021.

2018 Fort Lauderdale A1A Marathon & Half Marathon - February 18 ...

next February in Florida!!!!

** One More.

Just run the races that have been cancelled as “unofficial” virtual races.

You just run the distance on any route you choose.  Definitely is not the same but it will give you a sense of accomplishment.

Happy Running! Have you used any of the above? Any other suggestions that you can add about dealing with cancelled races? Please share.

Tips to Not Feeling Alone When You Run Alone

It’s Friday so I’m also linking up with Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday Five linkup! Join in! Don’t forget to link back to your hostess and visit some other bloggers.

My Topic today is: How To Survive Running Alone.

Another post about the pandemic! Sorry!

I know that due to the social distancing requirement, you are running alone.

For some, it is perfectly natural.  You usually run alone.  You have posted that nothing has changed with your running (other than some races may have been cancelled.)

But for those of us who do enjoy the company of others when we run, here are some suggestions that may help you:

1.Plan Virtual Runs with your friends.

Pick a date and time together and run.  Then afterward, text each other about the run and even send a picture.

2.Run a Virtual Race.

You can sign up for one and wear the bib or just run a race (unofficially). This gives your run a purpose.

3.Focus on Your Scenery.

In other words, run in a scenic location, forget about your watch and look around. Stop often and take pictures.  Be grateful for the opportunity to be outdoors.

4.Take Selfies.

Take those running goofy shots and even try jumping.  Post them or send them to friends.

5.Add Audio Distraction – Music, Podcasts, Audio Books.

When you run with others, you chat. Talking makes the run go by faster. Now… we need to be creative.

**Focus on YOUR running.

This is the time to work on your cadence, your posture, your foot strikes, etc. Try intervals or HR. Run naked (without that darn watch).

It will keep your mind off that you are now alone.

Happy Running! Have you used any of the above? Any other suggestions that you can add about running alone at this time? Please share.
