Monday Running Update

mon r u
Last Week:

  • Monday –  First day back at work after 11 days off.  And it was freezing!! No running for me, just 1 1/2 hours of doubles tennis after work
  • Tuesday – Another freezing day (the coldest of the winter so far) but I bundled up and ran outside after work.

  • Wednesday – A lot warmer today (30 vs 10). I took a quick run after work before going to a yoga class.
img_8090

my legs felt great yesterday but today, very sluggish!!

  • Thursday – Rode the exercise bike at work during lunch.  I didn’t love it but I didn’t hate it (and I was able to KNIT while on it 🙂 ).  Went out to dinner with an old friend.
  • Friday – I had planned to run today but the iffy weekend weather made me skip it. I actually walked for 15 min in the morning and rode the exercise bike for 1/2 hr (while knitting) at lunch.

just walked in circle around the lst floor with a co-worker

  • Saturday – I had hoped for a relaxing day but since rain was forecast for Sunday, I needed to do my long run instead. I ran 5 by myself and then Judy arrived to run the last 6. Thanks Judy.

img_8117

The rest of the day was filled with housework and taking doing those holiday decorations finally.

  • Sunday – Another free race – I had planned to run the 10K and follow it with 3.8 more miles to complete my 10 mile long run.  But I had done my long run on Saturday and since it was pouring, I DNSed.

winter series #3 in 2013

Once again the Hudson Mohawk Runners Club sponsored a FREE race for its members.

For Winter Series #3 today, they offered distances of 3M, 10K and 25K.

Since I have a half marathon in 4 weeks, I would have chosen to run the 10K and then add on more miles after. But due to predicted rain, I decided to do my long run yesterday and maybe just run the 3 mile option today.

I like to vary my long run routes – so far I have run on the Delmar Rail Trail…

img_7939

on the Corning Bike Trail…

img_7970

So this week, I decided on the Nisky Bike Trail.

My plan was to run 4 miles and then Judy would join me for 6 miles.

The path was clear and the temps significantly warmer than the beginning of the week (10 vs 40 degrees)

img_8091

But there were also sections that were icy… (I tiptoed over those)

img_8093

As you can see, the river isn’t frozen yet.
img_8094

Since I felt good, I wound up running 5 miles and then met Judy.

We ran most of our run in the opposite direction… turned around when there was ice.

img_8095

I got 11 miles done and I was a happy camper.

fullsizerender

I stopped off on my way home for my reward Starbucks and at Target (where as usual spent way too much money.)

The rest of the day was spent putting away those holiday decorations (it’s hard work.)

Today I woke early to POURING rain with high winds predicted.

I had planned on running the race.  I knew many people going and I have raced many times in the rain. And it was warm (in the 50s.)

But for a free local race….NOPE!!

I stayed home and cooked.

The only thing I may brave the rain for today is a movie.

Here’s a pic from last week’s race – pretty much for the same course as today’s race.

Hangover_Half-156-XL_edited

I miss racing but am glad to be home and dry.

If the weather is better, I plan to run the 15k next Sunday and the 10 miler on Jan. 31.

Happy Running! Do you run in the rain?

My Busy Stay-cation: Parties, Running, Movies…

This is my fourth day of my vastaycation. And until today the weather has been great.

Here’s how things have gone so far…

Day 1:

I ran 5 miles on the paved rail trail…

img_7938

cloudy…but so warm that

img_7939

…I wore a skirt and a tank. Yes on Dec 24!!

img_7928

festive outfit?

That afternoon, the hubby & I went to see Star Wars and then out to dinner afterwards for a quiet Christmas Eve.

Day 2:

After opening gifts, I went to visit my mentee, Amanda. I love spoiling her kids for Christmas

img_7947

my “pseudo” family

Later, I visited a friend and then went to see The Danish Girl with my running friend Judy. (That’s what Jews do on Christmas LOL)

In the evening, my hubby & I went to have Christmas dinner at my mother-in-law’s with my 2 stepsons, my brother-in-law, my sister-in-law and her hubby.  Lasagna, meatballs, sausage, the whole nine yards… so stuffed!!!!

After dinner, we went to my BFF’s to visit and see her daughter who was home from CA.

Day 3:

I needed to run off all that food.  It wasn’t as warm as Christmas Eve but it was still warm for this time of year (high 40’s). So I ran 2 miles on the Nisky Bike Path

img_7962

img_7969

img_7968

…and then ran 6 more miles with Judy.

img_7970

It was a really nice run and I enjoyed running with a friend instead of by myself.

img_7980

Judy made me look fast here. Thanks!

After my run, I rushed home to go to movie #3, Joy with 3 tennis friends.

In the evening, I took Amanda out for a belated birthday celebration to Canvas, Corks & Forks.

Here you eat as much as you want of 4 types of mac n cheese, drink and also paint…

img_7998

my drink = chocolate wine

img_7994

our finished masterpieces

After all that mac n cheese, we still went out after for dessert!!

Day 4:

A little bit of catch up today – laundry, cooking, cleaning before going out AGAIN tonight.

My hubby also put up my Christmas present (that I picked out for myself)..

the bottom row – distances other than half marathon and some of my age group medals not all fit)

with the top row of half marathon medals  – I left room on the right for the Sarasota Music Half on Feb 7, 2016!)

I love the medal rack…but if I designed I would have had the back row fall lower so those medals wouldn’t be hidden.

As you can see I am already out of space. (What do you avid racers do with all your medals??)

Tonight is my annual tennis party – games, gift giving and lots more food.

IMG_4679

photo from last year

It is rainy and nasty today but I plan to do some running tomorrow!!! I know I can’t run off all those extra calories but I can try…

So far, I haven’t had a chance to relax…

Happy Running! Anyone else busier when they are off from work than when they work?

‘Tis the Season

Yes, 5 days off from work in a row… To me that’s a vacation or in this case a “staycation.”

Here are the highlights:

I cooked Thanksgiving dinner. (This is important because I don’t cook often.)

IMG_7539

and some squash/leek soup

IMG_7540

I ran a 10k and a 5K race.

My house is decorated.

I don’t go all out but it still takes time… a small fake tree & a menorah plus snowmen everywhere!!

I even made and wrote out my holiday cards.  I always make a photo collage card.

xmas15card

this isn’t it but I made one that is similar

I finally got to the movies.  I love going to the movies but really don’t go until winter when there’s nothing else to do.

It was good…Next on my list is Brooklyn, Room, the Danish Girl

I did some online shopping for my hubby and together we went shopping for a joint anniversary gift.

We’ve had a hot tub on our decks for years but it died. Of course, it hasn’t worked since I started running. My hubby really wanted it. So I said yes. I do have 2 race-cations planned for Florida. I can’t be greedy.

Speaking of the winter holidays…

Winter weather is back.  Just on Friday, the temperature was in the 60’s and this morning, it was in the 20’s!!! Brrrr!

I haven’t really run since Thursday (except a slow 1 miler on Friday) and I wanted to get in one more longish run before my half marathon next Sunday.

I waited until it warmed up to the 30’s but the sun made it feel even warmer. I ran on the street parallel to the rail trail and ventured off to some other trails.

Although it was cold, the sun made it very pleasant. Our pace was actually the same as last time. So 8 easy milesmy last long run is done!!

Then in the evening, I took my mentee, Amanda and her 2 sons to see the Capital Lights in the Park.  We go every year. It’s mostly the same but the kids still enjoy it. We have dinner before & hot chocolate after. They get balloon animals and their faces painted.

Girls on the Run 5K Race & Long Run Recap

gotr

November 21, 2015 – 9:30 am- Corning Preserve

I was running this race for many reasons:

1. GOTR is a great organization.  I was a GOTR running buddy in the spring and I was happy to support them again.

10917256_361783967363595_7880664523982825473_o

GOTR participants in a May 2015 5k

2. The STEM runners were running their first 5k. I volunteered to help Kelly train for this race.

STEM participants in a previous 5k

3. Several people where I work were also running their first 5k. They claim that I motivated them to run so of course, I had to be there.

4. My running friends Barbara & Judy are also running this race. It’s nice to know people to hang out with before & after a race.

image

with Barbara on the same course but back in May

image

with Judy in March

4.  I love to race.  This is a flat course and one where someone could PR.  I have also gotten a AG award every time I’ve run on this course. But I guess it would be selfish of me to try.

1st

Laurie on the right was also going to be at the race.

5.  I had to run 12 miles today in preparation for my Dec 6 Half Marathon.  The Corning Bike Path is a perfect place to extend my miles from 3 to 12.

nice river views

So I arrived early to a crowd of excited runners – young and old.

image

I parked in the parking lot that was farther away and walked to the start.

It was cold.  I had better get used to this weather because it’s only going to get worse.

I wore layers which I shed before the race. I knew that I would be cold waiting to begin but fine once I started running.

image

I immediately bumped into Kelly who was, of course, nervous about her first 5K.  As soon as I talked to her, I knew that I had to run with her and encourage her.  This is what running is all about.  Not PRs.

Every time, I turned around, I saw someone that I knew.

I chatted with Judy, Laurie & Barbara.

But unexpectedly, I saw 3 ladies from last fall’s STEM program  They were still running and I was so happy to see them again. One runner, Kim, just ran the Stockadeathon and is thinking of a half marathon in the spring.

I also saw Judith who is GOTR running buddy, Elenora, a fellow SkirtSports ambassador and several others that I knew.

image

Kelly & moi

After we took lots of photos, it was time to line up.

GOTR runners

The GOTR runners, their coaches and running buddies lined up first. Everyone followed.

Needless to say, it was very slow going for the first 1/2 mile.

But we had perfect weather. What seemed to cold at the beginning, warmed up.  I shed my gloves & tied my jacket around my waist. (Overdressed again!)

Kelly, a few other STEM volunteers and I chatted the whole race.  Kelly never walked or even seemed to struggle.  We ran at around an 11 min pace which was faster than Kelly was used to. It was so great to see her run well and to be a part of it.

As soon as she saw the finish line, she took off.  She finished at 34;XX and I know she was thrilled…so much faster than she expected.

image

on the front & back of our Mizuno jackets and these runner really ARE!

I am glad that I didn’t run ahead and try to PR.  This experience was much more rewarding!!

After I was done, I hung out with Judy and Barbara and watched the others finish.

Everyone crossed the finish line so happy and so proud of themselves.

image

Finally my co-workers crossed….crying!! They had finished their first 5K…something they had thought was impossible.  It brought me to tears, as well.

I was so engrossed in the finishers that I forgot to get water or something to eat after the race. (I guess that was OK since I didn’t really expend a lot of energy during the race.)

Even though, this was one of my slowest finish times, I am glad that I participated in the race.

image

Afterwards, Barbara was nice enough to keep me company as I needed to get some more miles done.

image

as you see, I got rid of my gloves, jacket & hat

She is great to run with because she keeps me moving.  The next four miles were definitely faster than the first 3 and much much faster than the solo miles to follow. We ran in the opposite direction from the race course and then turned around and followed the course again.

But after 4 miles, she left me to my own devices.

I decided to run back to my car, get my baseball cap, shed my half zip and add back the green windbreaker.

image

lots of geese

Then I ran the race course again but continued on beyond it before I turned around.

image

trees are so barren

These miles were TOUGH!! I was tired but I think my lack of energy was from my lack of food & water.  What kept me going was the decision to turn back, cross the bridge and run into the city and go to Cider Belly Donuts. (They are supposedly the BEST and last time, I ran there, I didn’t have any money to buy one.)

image

So over the bridge, I dragged myself even though I already already completed my 5 miles (bringing me to my planned 12 mile total for the day.) And when I arrived…

image

Royal bummer!!!

What did I do?  Settled for second best…

image

skinny peppermint mocha & sandwich)

Luckily, Starbucks was across the street.

When I was done, I was so chilled that I had to sprint the 1/2 mile back to my car.

Yes, 13 (broken up) miles for the day!!

Happy Running! Did you race or run this past weekend?  Ever run a race just to help someone else?

Thinking Out Loud Thursday: Races, Runs, Thanksgiving, etc.

thinking out loud

So I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

Here’s what I’m thinking today…

  • Two More Long Runs before my next half marathon (on Dec 6.)

It seems like I was just getting ready for run my last one (Oct 10) and now, my next one is almost here.  How did that happen?

So this weekend, my run will be 12 miles! My longest distance before the race.

Although I’ve finished 15 half marathons, I still worry about completing the distance.  I also struggle when I run alone. So I’m not looking forward to it.

Then next weekend, there’s just 8 miles.

  • Two More Races before my next half marathon
gotr

first annual – 11-21-15

I have a 5k this weekend.  Normally, I would pass on this one because of the long run mentioned above. But I have been involved in this organization so I want to support them. The girl that I am training and all the others in the STEM program) are running their 1st 5k. Some of my co-workers are running their first 5k too.

Yup, I gotta do this race.

Do I race it?

Or swallow my pride and help the others finish?

ttt15

I am looking forward to this 10k on Thanksgiving.  Since I started running, I’ve almost always (except 2008 & 2012) run a race on Thanksgiving morning.  It’s the best part of the holiday (and I love food!!)

I used to run the local 5ks but last year I joined a training group for the 10k. I enjoyed it so I joined the same group this year. I PRed at last year’s race but I don’t think I’ve been as dedicated to my training so we will see what happens.

ttt2

yes, it snowed last year. Hopefully not this year.

I am also toying with running the 5k after the 10k race.  The 10K is at 8 am and the 5k at 10 am.  The 5k is the big race – thousands run it. I have friends running the 5k so it might be fun to run this one just for fun.  I am already there and dressed to run.

What do you think?

  • Then there’s Thanksgiving...

I LOVE Thanksgiving food…

What I miss most is cooking my favorite recipes….squash leek soup, stuffed turkey, sweet potatoes, homemade cranberry sauce and homemade pumpkin pie.

yum!!

double yum

My husband’s family is complicated.  Mine is non-existent.  So this year, we’re on a wait and see what my MIL is planning.  We may just go to a restaurant and then visit her or friends for dessert after.

What are you planning?  Are you running a Turkey Trot?  Are you cooking?

Happy Running! What are you thinking about today?  Please Share.

Running & NYC Weekend

I didn’t run in NYC.

I ran at home.

On Saturday, I was scheduled for a 11 mile run.  (Only 3 weeks until my half, Gulp!)

My friend Judy agreed to accompany me. But she wasn’t going to run for that far.

So I arrived early in order to run 5 miles before she got there. It was our first cold day.  In addition to being cold, it was windy and sleeting off and on. (I bet Judy wished that I had picked Sunday for my long run.)

trail

this is roughly the rail trail. I have never run to Voorheesville since it doesn’t connect directly.  The yellow line is the newly paved portion.   The total distance from Albany to Voorheesville is supposed to be 9 miles.

Unfortunately, they are doing construction on the bridge between to paved and unpaved portion of the rail trail.

image

So I had to park in town and run to the trail (. 5 miles) to enter it and then head north.  This is the unpaved part of the trail (It’s supposed to be paved next spring.)

Part of the trail is just covered with leaves from the trees.

image

Other parts are gravel-covered in preparation for paving.

image

I ran up to the park and then turned around and ran back to my car. (That gave me 5 miles total.)image

I really felt done after the 5 miles. (especially since I started out late waiting for the sleet to stop and had to sprint in order to get back on time.) Good thing Judy was there to drag me out for 6 more miles.

She agreed to run the rail trail going south (the paved portion) since she had never been on it before

Unfortunately, the leaves are all off the trees but it was still pretty.

image

image

that’s Judy running on the bridge

image

and under these 2 bridges

We ran to the end of the trail which was 3 miles away and then headed back.

Unfortunately, it’s downhill on the way out and uphill (when you are more tired) on the way back. But we made it.

image

I really appreciate Judy running with me on this nasty weather day. It is more enjoyable to have someone to share long runs.

Then on Sunday, my hubby and I got up at the crack of dawn to take the Megabus to NYC.

Yes, I persuaded my hubby to go my favorite place.  This was the bribe:

on Broadway for the first time

He loves watching Irish dancing. Riverdance is his favorite show.  But he loves this one too. Unfortunately, I found out after I bought the tickets that Michael Flatley only appears in it after the night performances.

Fortunately, the weather was much nicer than the day before. It was sunny & in the 50’s.

We followed the same plan as when I went with my tennis ladies.

image

at the beginning of the High line (along the Hudson R.)

We walked the whole High Line (from beginning to end).  My hubby had never been.  I think he enjoyed it (but probably not as much as I do.)

image

trees planted among the rails

image

I loved the bridge between the buildings

image

nearing the end

My hubby is a speed walker and we had extra time before lunch so we walked through Chelsea Market.

image

image

Then we stopped for lunch in a small Italian restaurant.

we shared an eggplant appetizer & then I had gnocchi as my main course – YUM!!

After lunch, we walked to 42nd street (from 14th St.) to the theater. (The reason for our trip to NYC.)

image

Flatiron building – one of my favs

image

I like this building too

On the way, we stopped at Lord N Taylor to see their Holiday Windows and Bryant Park.

image

image

We also a little time to visit a photography exhibit at the NYC Library.

image

awesome building …need to spend more time there next time

image

we had 4th row seats!!! WooHoo!

The show was fantastic (even without Michael Flatley.)

After the show, on the way back to the train station, we stopped for a drink at a rooftop bar.

we were actually crashing a private event but we didn’t know it LOL

So I waited for the rain to stop and ran by myself, did some errands and went to a yoga class.  Yes, yoga for the first time in almost a year!!!
