Monday Running Update

ru
Last Week:

  • Monday –  Completed my postponed long run today.  I started later than I should have.  I drove to run on the Zim Smith Bike Path because I love to have a post run treat at Leah’s Cakery. Well, it is closed on Mondays. 😦 So it was hot, I was tired from the weekend and the run was pretty awful.

img_1872

But I got it done and found a great place to eat afterwards only 3.5 miles away.

YAY! Done!

I went to a STEM (training domestic violence survivors for a 5k) training/meeting in the evening at FleetFeet and I am excited that my volunteering starts Sept 12.

  • Tuesday – Decided to rest and skip my AM tennis. Got my nails done, played tennis in the evening and then went out to dinner (to celebrate the end of our summer Tuesday tennis).
  • Wednesday -The tennis round robin got cancelled so I went to the gym.

img_1749

Ran with Alyssa in the evening. She had to get home so we had to rush.  It meant that we were done before the rain (But boy was it humid!!)

  • Thursday – I played tennis in the am. Met Barbara for a run at UAlbany. Another friend was supposed to come along but we confused the times. It was a decent run since the temps have cooled down.

Afterwards I met my BFF for a walk around the mall.

  • Friday – I went to the gym in the am and then mah jongg in the evening.  Enjoyed my last day of leisure!!
  • Saturday –  My second long run this week and I really didn’t want to do it. So I took a new route … The unpaved part of the rail trail. It was a nice route and I can’t wait until they pave it.

Then my friend and I decided  to go up to the Saratoga track for a few races (It closes this weekend) and then go to the casino.

showing my $40 winning ticket – won 4 out of 5 races so a very good day!! was not lucky at the casino

  • Sunday – I got up very early to head up to the lake.  It’s the annual Christmas party and the bay gets crowded early.  Lots of boats, food, entertainment and FUN!! The weather was absolutely perfect.

The day ended with dinner out and fireworks over the lake.

30 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday 5K race
  • Tuesday – NYC!!
  • Wednesday – First day of my new job,  4 mile run with a friend
  • Thursday –  Work, 3 mile run with a friend, hubby’s tennis party?
  • Friday –  Work, rest, mah jongg
  • Saturday – 5K race + 5-7 more miles
  • Sunday – boating

Friday Five: Summer Highlights

It’s Friday so I am linking up with three DC area bloggers Mar at Mar On the Run, Cynthia at You Signed Up For What?! and Courtney from Eat Pray Run, DC .  Anyone can join with their own Friday Five post (yes, it must be a Friday Five!!)  They encourage you to visit other blogs on the linkup, comment, share and engage!

I had my first Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte and I go back to working next Wednesday so it feels like summer is over.

My Friday Topic is Five Best Things About This Summer.

I won’t say “Not Working” because it is very stressful being unemployed with no idea when your next paycheck will arrive not to mention health care…

 1. Rediscovering Tennis

Once I started running, I pretty much lost interest in tennis. I played only once a week and on tennis vacations.  Well, this summer, I played outdoors a lot.  My tennis improved.  But the best thing was that I played in four different groups and met some awesome ladies.

img_1299

2. Discovering Hiking

I never really hiked before. I didn’t have the time nor the confidence to do so.  But this summer I fought my fears and did a few solo hikes.  The more hikes I did, the more confident I got and the more I enjoyed it.

3. Finding a New Running Friend

I used to run mostly alone.  Sometimes Judy & I could fit in a run together (but mostly in the winter) and occasionally I would run with Barbara. Well, I met Alyssa on FB and since she is new the area, she was glad to have a running partner.  Since we met in June, we have run once a week together.

4. Visiting NYC

Love love love NYC.  I have been fortunate to find different people to help me feed my addiction.

5. Running and Boating along and on Lake George

Said to be the “Queen” of all lakes.  I love Lake George.  I’ve run one race on either side of the lake and one in the village.

July Recap

Wow, the summer is flying by… It’s August already.

So here’s how July went…

Weekday Runs:

Summer arrived.  It was HOT and humid most days and we had very little rain.  I was able to run at least 3-4 times each week. But I do not have a treadmill at home so they were all slow sweaty ones.

Because I am not working, I am able to run wherever. I am not forced to run near home or near work. So I have tried to do my runs in many different places.

I also ran with Alyssa 3 times. I met her on FB. These were, no doubt, besides my 5k races my faster runs. I struggle when I run with her but she gets me to run faster.

13508972_1818003835089003_7257062188135281987_n

Long Runs:

There were NONE.  I ran races on the weekends. There were NO double-digits runs.  The longest were a 7 mile run (interrupted after 4), a 5 mile run and a 3 mile post 5k run.

Total Mileage:

july

I ran 76 miles this month – the same as last month. But I wasn’t training for anything and it was hot so I guess that’s ok.

Races:

I only ran two races this month – both 5ks (I DNSed on my 3rd 5k.)

I was generally happy with how they went. I did not have PR goals and of course, they could have been faster.  I won age group awards in both. That’s an achievement.

Cross Training:

I am STILL unemployed and I am playing tennis. But not as often as in the beginning of the summer. The thrill is wearing off.

I DID NOT go to a single yoga class!! Someday I will do, I promise.

lheartspaceogo

I did workout at the gym at least three times.  I know that I could go more often but it’s better than nothing.

I walk to the tennis courts when I play nearby and occasionally do go for a walk. But not as often as when I worked.  I think that the tennis and the hiking (see below) make up for it, though.

Other News:

I went hiking again…by myself and loved it. Once to Thomas Mountain in Bolton Landing and then on four trails in Chestertown.

I took a trip to NYC with my two of my friends- We took a history/food tour of northern Little Italy and then a visit to the Tenement museum. What a full but exciting day!!

I also took a day trip the Mount (Edith Wharton’s home) in Lenox, Mass. The tour of the house was really interesting and the gardens were beautiful.

img_0877

I spent a wonderful weekend with my tennis friends on the Schroon River. I did some running but mostly played tennis and ate.

img_0935

Boating season is continuing and the weather has been great (until this weekend).  I love it at the lake. It’s my “happy place.”

Feeling healthy so Life Is Good.

Hopefully I will find a job and life will be even better.

Looking Ahead:

My next half marathon is September 18 so I must start doing some longer runs.

I do have a bunch of races coming up.  This is my list so far for the next 2 months:

  • 8-06-16 – Race the Train (8.4 m)
  • 8-13-16 – Camp Chingachgook 10k
  • 8-20-16 – Jailhouse Rock 5K
  • 9-10-16 – Malta 5k
  • 9-18-16 – Saratoga Palio Half Marathon
  • 10-01-16  – Apple Run 5K
  • 10-09-16 – Ramblefest Half Marathon
  • 10-15-16 – Great Pumpkin Challenge 10K

No monthly goals.

my motto for 2016

Monday Running Update

mon r u
Last Week:

  • Monday –  I drove up to Bolton Landing (on Lake George) today.  I managed to squeeze in a short run before everyone wanted to head out on the lake.

img_0590

We spent the whole day on the lake – at a dock on an island and then in the bay before heading back to barbecue at the marina and watch the fireworks.

img_0659

  • Tuesday –  While everyone had to drive home to go to work, I again decided to take advantage of my free time and stayed up at the lake. My legs were tired but I dragged myself for 3 slow miles.

img_0647

I managed to get a sub for tennis so stayed up on the lake and spent a relaxing day by myself- got in lots of walks, beach time and reading.

  • Wednesday – This morning I went for a hike up to the top of Thomas Mountain.  I had planned to repeat the hike I took last week, but accidentally took the blue trail instead of the orange one – a lot more challenging and a different view.
img_0707

I didn’t fall and so it was worth it for the new view but I took the orange trail down… didn’t want to push my luck

I had planned to meet Alyssa and Barbara for an ice cream run sponsored by Fleet Feet and Saucony so I headed home.

img_0705

It was very very hot and my run very very slow but the ice cream was GOOD.

  • Thursday – I played tennis in the am with the Troy Tennis Group and went out for dinner with an old friend. No running today.
img_0719

sorry I didn’t get a pic of the crepes with hazelnut sauce & bananas

  • Friday – Again I played tennis in the am on the courts near my house. Still incredibly hot. I planned on running after dinner and before my weekly mah jongg game but I waited too long and it started to pour.  Another no running day.
  • Saturday – This morning I actually got my run in before the rain.

img_0733

And I stopped off at the gym before heading to the grocery store.

img_0738

  • Sunday – Started off the day with a 5k race (I ran the half there 2 years ago). It was just raining or pouring the whole race.  Got a medal, tech shirt and a pint glass for 1st in my age group so all is good.

img_0754

When I got home, the rain had stopped. I was tired but managed a few more miles.

img_0753

Then headed back to Saratoga for  mini golf birthday party.

img_0764

18.5 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday -tennis AM, rest
  • Tuesday – tennis Am, tennis picnic, 4 mile run with a friend
  • Wednesday rest, work webinar
  • Thursday –  AM tennis, 3 mile run with a friend
  • Friday –  AM tennis, 4 mile run

Monday Running Update

mon r u
Last Week:

  • Monday –  I stayed up at Bolton Landing (on Lake George) today.  Started the day with a slow scenic 4 mile run.

waterlilies at the Sagamore – ❤

I had planned to do some hiking but it started to rain so I headed to the outlets.  Believe it or not, I didn’t buy a thing.

  • Tuesday –  Did some errands in the morning including an eye dr appt.

An impending storm cancelled tennis so I went for a walk and then to the gym.

  • Wednesday – Started the day with a run…solo. Decided on a road trip to Peebles Island and thoroughly enjoyed it.

For dinner I met my travel tennis friends at a new restaurant

  • Thursday – Morning tennis and then later ran with my new running friend.  The run was followed by a mall walk with my BFF.

She suggested the ice cream – Not me!

  • Friday – Again I played tennis in the am (with a different group). In the evening, I played maj jongg (which I hadn’t done in weeks) while watching the Olympic Trails on TV.

IMG_6210

  • Saturday – Planned on a long run and then a ride up to the lake but the hubby decided to stay home and I procrastinated until afternoon to run.

I ran my fastest mile ever (7:xx) to get to the bakery before it closed.

I begged and they opened the door & sold the only thing left – a strawberry muffin.

  • Sunday – This should have been a lake day because the weather was perfect but it wasn’t.  Instead I took a SUP lesson in the am with Judy. It was actually fun. I am as clumsy as I thought. I fell twice but the good news is that I stayed up over an hour and want to try it again.

Sorry no pictures of us standing on the boards – maybe next time.

In the afternoon, I went for a butterfly walk at the Albany Pinebush Preserve.  It was about 1 mile and we learned about the insects, birds and plants in this preserve.  I hope to go back and run on some of the trails. (There are 11.) I did see a lot of butterflies and I was amazed at how small they were.

These butterflies are an endangered species so it is rare to see them

I talked my friend into a 4 mile walk after dinner (She may no longer be my friend LOL)

img_0392

great way to learn about the history of the park and get in some exercise

After the tour, I had ice cream, then we walked some more in the park, went to the zoo, walked ALL the way back to Macys, changed our clothes and had dinner at a cute restaurant with French running blogger, Karen before heading back home on the train.

Monday Running Update

mon r u
Last Week:

  • Monday – My first day being unemployed.  It’s amazing that when you have so much time, you get so little done.  I did manage to go for a windy walk and then run with two friends.

img_0163

  • Tuesday – I decided to take advantage of my time off to play some tennis. I joined a tennis group at Prospect Park in Troy, met some new players and had a lot of fun.  Then I went grocery shopping at Target.  No running scheduled for today but I did register for some more races.
snapseed

pic not from today but I wore a similar outfit

  • Wednesday –  Another gorgeous day.  I played tennis in a round-robin at a country club, got my hair cut and then went for a short run. (I was supposed to run with a new friend but she had to cancel.)

evening run at Colonie Town Park

  • Thursday – Played tennis in the same place as Tuesday.

But I met some new women who invited me out to lunch.  Well, we wound up talking for 4 hours!! About everything from tennis to running to fitbits to mah jongg.

After lunch, I met a friend to run.  It was HOT!! The company was good but the run was not.  Do not run in the middle of a hot sunny day after eating a BLT and sweet potato fries.

ran with Barbara but bumped into to running friend Tom on the trail

In the evening, I went out to dinner (at a Peruvian place) with a former co-worker and then visited with a good friend (who happens to be Peruvian).

  • Friday – Day 4 in a row of tennis! I played today with a different group of women.   It was near where I live so I could walk to the courts.

30 min. walk each way = STEPS

  • Saturday – Ran 5k race. It was such a fun race because I knew so many runners there.

I had thought of going up to our boat but instead stayed home to catch up cleaning, weeding or other stuff around the house.

  • Sunday – Ran my 2nd 5k race of the weekend. Definitely the smallest race I have ever run.

2nd woman overall and first in my age group

and then spent the rest of the day relaxing on one of the islands of Lake George with my hubby and 9 of our friends.

img_0238

I decided to stay up at the lake on our boat so I could run up here in the morning.

The Ultimate Coffee Date – June

Since today is the first Saturday in June,  I am joining up with CocoDeborah, and Lynda for their ultimate coffee date.

The Ultimate Coffee Date
Over coffee or tea…

I would tell you that I feel guilty about not running enough with STEM.  I love that group but I missed 4 Wednesdays in a row. For two, I was in Florida. Then I went out to dinner for one and ran with my Freihofer Training group for the other. So I only have one more left before their big race.

image

The interview below with the STEM coordinator explains it all.

http://cbs6albany.com/sports/beyond-the-games/beyond-the-games-stem-runners

Over coffee or tea…

I would tell you that I am still mentally recovering from my half marathon.  Every time someone asks, I have to retell the story. More than ever, I realize that I made the right decision to finish the race.

Almost there!

Over coffee or tea…

I’d tell you that I am looking forward to today’s 5k even though I know that my legs will not be able to run fast.

Done!!
2011 was the last time that I trained for the race and I finished in 28:08. (2012 -post ankle surgery, 2013-broken foot, 2014-post VCM relay.)

Next year, I plan to skip the VCM relay and actually train for this race.

Over coffee or tea…

I would tell you that it is strange not to have a half marathon until September 24. I ran one in February, on in March, one in April and one in May…Will I cave and sign up for one in August??

It is VERY hilly. It will be hot. I should only run the 10k……

Over coffee or tea…

I would tell you that I am hoping for great weather on the weekends (to go boating) and also that my hubby doesn’t divorce over my summer racing schedule…

  • 6-12-16  – Run for Help 5k
  • 6-18-16 – Cancer Crushers 5k ???

I also want to try kayaking.

April Recap

I can’t believe April is over already… Time is flying by!!

So here’s how things went:

Weekday Runs:

The weather was fickle – there were warm days and then there were cold days. There were even rainy and windy days.  I was still able to run 2-3 times each week – mostly after work.

Long Runs:

There were a few races with extra miles added on. Then I ran a half marathon. So I continued to run higher mileage on the weekend.

Total Mileage:

100 miles this month!

april16

I was pleased that my mileage is back up because next month, there will be a lot fewer miles run.

Races:

I ran FOUR races this month – a 5 miler, a 5K, a half marathon and a 10K.

I was generally happy with how they all went. I did not have PR goals and of course, they could have been faster but the shorter races were the first part of a long run.  And the half marathon had hills which I had not trained for. The 10K was the week after the half.

Cross Training:

I had taken a few weeks off from tennis to heal my sore elbow.  I started back playing once a week and now it feels FINE!! Yay!!

IMG_6210

happy to back on the court with my friends – played 3 times this month.

I DID NOT go to a single yoga class!! I planned to but something usually got in the way.  Next month, I promise! (Wait, I said that last month and the month before!!)

lheartspaceogo

I continued to walk at work (around the building and to Starbucks or the park). I have also started going to the mall to get more steps in on days when the weather is lousy.

img_9254

My Starbucks addiction continues!!

I did not go to the gym at all.  My elbow is healed so I have NO excuses…just lazy (or have other priorities).

Sat am at the gym

Other News:

I ran 4 times with the Freihofer Challenge Training group. We started out the month with snow, then there was rain and we ended with sunshine. I enjoy running with my “advanced” group friends and coach Patrick.  He has had us running 400m intervals.  These are tough for me because they often come on the day after a long run.

I’ve also started my volunteering with STEM. These year’s group is so enthusiastic.  It makes it even more fun.  I am paired up with a lady who is very speedy, as well. No goofing off here.

The place where I  work participated in the Million Mile Month for the month of April.  I changed my original goal of completing 100 miles to 300. And I did it!!!!

MMM_VertLogo_2016_forweb_copy

I’m reading a new book that I am enjoying.

I finally got together with my mentee and her 2 sons. I hadn’t seen them in months. We went to the Firefigher’s Museum and had a blast.

img_9200

After missing a monthly gathering with my tennis friends, we did get together this month.

img_9330

lots of laughs and we did solve the mystery.

Feeling healthy so Life Is Good.

Looking Ahead:

I am not training for my next half marathon in May. It’s another hilly but scenic course. I am looking forward to spending time with AJH and visiting the Burlington VT area again.

May 29, 2016

I have been busy signing up for spring races.  This is my list so far for the next 2 months:

  • 5-01-16 – Cherry Blossom 5k
  • 5-03-16 – practice GOTR 5k
  • 5-07-16 – Mastodon Challenge 15k
  • 5-08-16 – Mother’s Day 5K (for GOTR)
  • 5-12-16 – Albany Law Day Against Domestic Violence 5k
  • 5-14-16 – Summer Smith 5k Addiction Awareness Run
  • 5-29-16 – Vermont City Marathon Relay
  • 6-04-16 – Freihofer’s Run for Women 5k
  • 6-12-16  – Run for Help 5k (for STEM)
  • 6-26-16 – Adirondack Distance Run 10m

And May is my favorite month!!!

Flowers are in bloom and it’s my birthday and I go on vacation!!!  Woo Hoo!!!!!!!!!

Monday Running Update

mon r u
Last Week:

  • Monday  So we went from winter to summer here, it appears. It was 75 degrees for my lunch walk to the park. The tulips aren’t looking to great (due to that recent snowstorm?) but still a lovely walk and a delicious Starbucks chocolate banana smoothie.

Sunday night, I woke up with an ache in my right Achilles.  It kept me up most of the night. I was panic-stricken imagining DNSing my half and all my summer races. But it was fine all day so I decided to go to my group run.  We were scheduled for a 10 min warm-up and cool down and then 8 400m intervals at 5k pace with 2 min. jogging in between.  I asked my coach what I should do after an 11 mile run the day before and a half marathon coming up.  I was considering not doing the speed repeats.  He recommended doing them but not at 5k pace but at 15k pace. So that’s what I did.  It was 79 degrees and my legs were tired but the laps got easier as I ran them.  My 400 m times were not speedy like last week but in the 2:10-2:15 range. The best part was that my Achilles felt fine…no pain at all (phew!)

  • Tuesday – The day started out cool and cloudy but got better and I again went for my daily afternoon walk. More good news – my elbow pain has mysteriously disappeared and I played tennis without worry. Afterwards, as usual, we went out to dinner.
  • Wednesday – Another beautiful spring day and a walk to the park.

After work and before the STEM ladies arrived, I ran one loop around campus.  Then I was paired up with Michelle again.  She was even speedy that last week. (But the French lady can no longer come on Wed. 😦 ) It was a fun workout. Love these ladies!

  • Thursday – It was too busy at work for me to get out and walk but I did squeeze out a run. The closest place to go was the track. Not exciting but got it done.

After work, I went out to dinner with two coworkers. I actually walked to and from the restaurant.  The reason why is below:

I also shared an appetizer (chicken meatballs) and the dessert was shared as well. Everything was delish.

Then I stopped off to go grocery shopping and to buy ingredients to make charoset for the seder the next night.

  • Friday – The day started out rainy but improved and was quite warm. I had to do some errands during lunch (forgot to buy the horseradish & gelfite for seder) and only got in a short walk to Starbucks.

non-fat milk, sugar free syrup, no whip so don’t judge

In the evening, one of my mah jongg friends hosted our annual Passover seder.  Always a good time (and there were as many non-Jews as Jews there.)

  • Saturday – I tried to make myself rest.  I didn’t run but got in a lot steps doing errands and housework. Then I went out to dinner with the hubby to carb load for the next day.
  • Sunday – I completed my 19th half marathon. I ran it with my friend Barbara on a perfect running weather day but those hills…I barely survived.
