Winter Series #1 (15K)

Hudson Mohawk Runners Club sponsors FREE races throughout the winter for its members. The course is pretty boring but free is free.

winter4-216

winter series #3 in 2013 (10K) – I wore the same hat & gloves today

This weekend, they offered distances of 3M, 10K and 25K.

I usually run 8 miles the week before a half marathon but I didn’t want to overdo.

So I signed up for the 10K and hoped the conditions would be good enough for running and warmer than it has been.

This would be my 8th 10K:

2014
Spring Run Off 10K -1:00:51
Camp Chingachgook 10k – 1:04:54
Troy Turkey Trot 10k – 57:03 PR

2013
HMRRC #3 – 1:08:18 -same course
Helper’s Fund 10K – 1:06:10
Monster Scramble 10K – 1:03:18 (it was SHORT)

2012
Camp Chingachgook 10k – 1:09:07

My expectations for this one was to be around 1 hour and have a course PR.

I ran a half marathon on New Year’s Day but haven’t run much since then.

I got lucky with the weather.  It was no longer sub-zero but a balmy 15 degrees. Probably single digits with the wind chill.

I left early to get parking since these races are crowded and there are other events going on at UAlbany. I think I got the last spot in the parking lot and I was 45 minutes early.

What I love about this local race is that you get to see a lot of people that you know.

I immediately bumped into Bridget & Elisa, some SRMs.  I also got to chat with Judy from FB and Sue from Adirondacxk Runners.  I even saw some runners from the STEM group, the Turkey Trot group, my coach from that group as well as other familiar faces from races.

We stayed indoors until the last minute and then made out way outside.

I lined up with Judy who was running the 10K also.

The race is very informal – no bibs, no starting mat, no timing chips, etc.

I just told myself that this was simply a training run and just do it.

My Garmin actually found the satellite right away for a change. Judy & I lined near the back. So it was slow going for a while weaving in and out of the crowd. It took me about a 1/2 mile to get a rhythm.

winter3-18

Do they look cold?

And it was cold especially with the wind blowing in your face.  The hands, as usual, were frozen for the first 2 miles.

The course is very boring but it also has inclines.  Nothing steep, just enough to keep it interesting.  This year, I have tried to be better about hills and not walk up them. And I didn’t.

There were 1 water stops (mile 4) and I stopped to take a GU and walk. This is where I actually caught up to Elisa & Bridget.  They are much faster than me and I quickly lost them as I was trying eat a frozen GU and not choke on the ice in my water.

The problem with a small race of about 200 and being a middle of the packer, I usually ran almost all of the race by myself – no spectators, no scenery, no music. However this race since I was not running the longest distance, there were people running with me.  I even passed a few guys.

I dressed perfectly.  My hands warmed up and I wasn’t really cold.

The amazing thing was that I felt great the whole race.  No aches and pains.  No blisters. I actually felt stronger as the race went on.

Eventually I did catch back up to Elisa and sprinted across the finish line right behind her at 1:00:24.

I think I was 161st out of 205. This is a fast group as usual.  They gave awards for the top 2 in each 10 year age group.  I was 6th in my age group.

ws310k

I was 6th

I was happy with the results.  Though it was over 3 minutes slower than my last 10K (and PR), it was my 3rd fastest 10K and almost 6 minutes faster than my 2013 on this same course

I went inside to warm up and have some soup (red pepper & quinoa), bread, cookies, fruit, hot chocolate.  Not a bad spread for a free race .

post race

post race

Race splits:

mile 1 – 9:50 (congestion)
mile 2 – 9:41
mile 3 – 9:36
mile 4 – 10:40 (water & gu)
mile 5 – 9:32
mile 6 – 9:43 (brief walk)
.2  – 8:18

After the race, I did some errands and when I got home, I ran 1.8 miles more in my neighborhood to bring the day’s mileage up to 8.

Happy Running! How you are enduring the winter?  Did you run this weekend?

1.  It is cold. Not cold. Frigid. Like -20 with the wind chill.

1509293_10152396458377026_5265556860440395410_n

2.  I still have not mastered treadmill running. I run slow.  I can’t handle more than 3 miles.  I ran outside Monday night and survived.  I hope it warms up to 15 so I can run outside tomorrow night.

but this is really accurate:

3. I am excited and nervous about my upcoming half marathon,

I can’t wait to leave the cold weather?  But will it be warm in Florida?  Will my flight arrive without a delay? (I leave on Friday & my race is 6:30 am Saturday.)

How will I be on race day?  Will I have a good race?

and an extra #4 & #5

4. I am racing (if it warms up) on Sunday,  HMRRC Winter Series #3.  It will be a 10K and my last long training run. I ran this one 2 years ago. I had finished in 1:08:18 (which was a PR at the time.) Now my 10K PR is 57:03. I hope to finish around 60 min.

5. I went to a STEM celebration dinner last night. It was for the volunteers and runners in the Domestic Violence Survivors Group. The women were so proud that they ran a 5k (in the pouring cold rain).

I can’t wait to do participate in this program again.

Happy Running! What’s new in your life? How are you dealing with the cold?

Running and Bargain Shopping

My two favorite things–Running and Bargain Shopping

Although I wasn’t sure that my legs were recovered from my half marathon on Thursday, I decided to meet my FB friend Judy for a run.

We have been meeting in the Crossings, the same place and at the same time.  This was to be the last time for a while since I will be going back to work. Each time the weather has been colder.

But nevertheless, it is always enjoyable to run with someone else. We chat abut running and racing and have basically the same philosophy on both.

IMG_4752

The only problem with this run was that neither of us had a working watch or phone app. So I am guessing that it was more or less 4 1/2 miles since it seemed longer than our previous runs…but who knows?

After the run, I stopped at Starbucks to refuel.  I got some Blueberry oatmeal which gave me 4 bonus stars.(I now have enough to free lunch item this week 🙂 )

oatmeal

Then I stopped at FleetFeet. I love my Mizuno Wave Rider 18s so I had ordered them in a different color.

IMG_4757

Aren’t they pretty?

Guess what? I had a $25 off coupon?  So I bought some of my favorite GU flavors (which were buy 10, get 2 free.)

IMG_4763

Next, I headed to Joann Fabrics where I had 40% off coupon on one item and then 15% off the whole order. I bought a shelf that I plan to make into a medal hanger and some other stuff.

IMG_4761

less than $1

I resisted going to Target that was in the  same plaza since I can’t get out of the store for less than $200. Instead I went to Marshalls.

IMG_4760

I don’t need another tech top but the neck will keep my face warmer & it was only $14

The best deal of the day was on socks.  I get blisters and I was tempted to buy Feetures socks at FleetFeet but didn’t want to spend $15 on a pair of socks (when I don’t really need any socks.)

IMG_4758

same socks but I found them in the men’s dept and they were only $4.50 so I bought 4 pair.

When I left, it was snowing. That was perfect. I left without being tempted to do more shopping.

I was so happy that I got my run in. Tomorrow it is supposed to rain and colder temps are forecasted for the week.

Happy Running!  Do you shop for bargains?

Currently

Being off from work for more than a weekend is very strange for me. I am not used to having so much free time and yet, not getting things done.

Reading…. I want to see Unbroken tomorrow in the theaters so I am trying to finish the book. (I doubt I will finish, though.)

Watching… I heard this show was good and I am binge watching all the episodes to catch up. So far, I am enjoiying it and I think I am hooked.

Drinking I have fallen in love with herbal teas.

Eating… out a lot.

Anticipating the Hangover Half Marathon on New Year’s Day…but only as a training run but still nervous.

Wishing for  Seasonally warm temps and DRY weather… no snow, ice or rain so I can run outdoors.

20131228-192516.jpg

Yay! Clear path.

Seeing next week… Going to MoMA in NYC to see…

and seeing the decorations that I missed on my last visit.

Loving... that I do not have to go to work and can RUN any time I want and do whatever whenever. I may even hit the gym.

IMG_4562

have to finish knitting this scarf by tomorrow!

IMG_3982

Feeling… Anxious. I am always nervous about running a half marathon especially a destination race where I don’t know anyone.

West Palm beach, here I come!

Happy Running?  What are you currently….?

Would You Rather…? Holiday Edition

…Run a Christmas themed event in the heat or the snow?

Probably the snow because hey, it is a Christmas-themed event.  But I do not enjoy the cold, as a rule.

20131214-200228.jpg

this was during a snowstorm

…Sing / listen to Christmas songs during your run, or wear a Christmas outfit during your run?

A little of both.  I have a few Christmas songs on my iPhone and I have dressed up to run.

waiting inside before the race

… A new running watch, or an entry fee to a running event?

A new running watch.  My Garmin 205 is getting old.

… Go for a run before your Christmas meal or after?

Definitely before.  It would give me the excuse to eat a lot of goodies.

…Listen to an Audiobook / Podcast on running, or read a book about running?

I have never listened to an audiobook/podcast on running but I have read many a book on running. I would like to read this one:

… A year access to an online running coach or 5 one-on-one visits to a running coach?

One-on-one. I need the person to keep me accountable.  If it were online, I know I wouldn’t get as much out of it.

… Give up your Christmas to help those in need (like a soup kitchen), or spend your Christmas with ALL your family?

I don’t have big family so I think I would rather give up my Christmas to help those in need. I do give gifts to my mentee’s kids each Christmas.

He loves those super heroes

I just love him!

… Watch Love Actually or The Holiday?

Love Actually  – it is one of my favorite  movies.

… Ham or Chicken / Turkey for Christmas meal?

I don’t really like ham, so I would prefer chicken or turkey. But I actually really like Lasagna on Christmas Day. I have spent many a Christmas at my Italian in-laws.

Happy Running! So which would you rather? Share some answers in the comments or share on your own blog and link back!

I’ll say it up front.  I hate the cold!!

If I didn’t run, I would never go outside.

I don’t ski, snowboard, ice skate, sled, snow shoe…nada!

Keeping that in mind, here are my favorites:

1. Running (only cuz I sign up for races & winter half marathons to make me get out there)

Polar Cap - February

20140209-142914.jpg

2. Tennis (Indoors) – I play doubles once a week.

IMG_1254

3. Knitting – I am not very experienced but I have made socks, hats & scarfs.

Tuesdays on the Run: Running in tough conditions

Erika @ MCM Mama Runs hosts Tuesdays on the Run with April @ Run the great wide somewhere and Patty @ My no-guilt life!

This week’s topic is: Running in Tough Conditions

  • RAIN
lr2

Love Run 2014 in a monsoon

I generally don’t run in the rain unless I have an important race (That’s 2 1/2 half marathons in the pouring rain!!!).  There is no way to avoid getting wet, but I recommend putting your phone in a plastic bag, wearing a cap with a brim and/or a hood and a waterproof/water resistant windbreaker.

lg2

Lake George Half 2011 in the sleeting rain

Don’t forget dry clothes for after the race.

  • SNOW

YakTrax 001

In the Northeast, if you run in the winter, you will have to run in the snow. I look for a place to run where the road or sidewalk is clear and if not, I wear YakTrax.

Last Run 5K 2013 in a blizzard

  • ICE

20140222-161533.jpg

Stay home.  Use a treadmill. I don’t run on the ice.

dreadmill

boring but safe

  • COLD
Polar Cap - February

a cold Polar Cap 2014

Lots of layers but not too many or you’ll overheat.  Wool socks, thermal gloves & a hat are the most important.  I like something I can zip or unzip around my neck.

HMRRC 15K - January

a frigid HMRRC 15K 2014

It was sub zero , I think for the race above & I even used hand warmers.

  • WIND
20140315-131747.jpg

a windy Runnin of the Green 2014

Wear layers.  You feel colder when it is windy.  Start out running into the wind and end (when you are more tired) with the wind at your back. I also wear sunglasses to protect my eyes (contacts) from the wind.

Cherry Avenue Extension Bridge Over Rail Trail

IMG_4308

Run on a trail or path where the trees shield you from the wind.

  • HEAT & HUMIDITY
Run for the Roc - September

Run for Roc 2014 – 11 am start – hot!

Hydrate…hydrate…hydrate and wear moisture-wicking clothes.

sshm4b

a humid Saratoga Springs Half 2014 – almost passed out after this one

Run early before it gets too hot or in the evening.

Happy Running!  Any hints about running in tough conditions? What was your toughest race?

thumbs up on my race!

This is what he wrote me last Sunday:

Happy Sunday Mrs Darlene !! While you were off setting your PR at the 15K race today I was laying around chilling on my top bunk finishing up my Jtube feeds. My mom , brother, and sister were getting ready and then went to church and I played Temple Run on my Dad’s phone We should know in a couple weeks after the last round of testing results are back if my immune system will tolerate me going around people or if I will need to start IVIG. I am so proud of you for setting a PR!!! Doesn’t that mean you have now set a NEW PR for the 5,10,&15K runs?!?! WHOA. You really are the world’s best runner thank you so much for running for me and always being so thoughtful sending me shirts , sometimes medals and other things . I am a very blessed boy. We love you!

Here is the message I got early this morning:

Happy Saturday, Mrs Darlene!!! My overnight feeds didn’t go too hot last night so today is a lazy day trying to finish up the half liter that was left. I am supposed to get 1000-1600 milliliters per day of formula via J tube and then another 1400-2000 in fluids both orally and through my GJ. That’s for both calories and fluid replacement for my dysautonomia/PoTS/mito/FTT/metabolic disorder. Due to my gastroparesis though its hard to meet that requirements. I am fortunate to get 1500 ml TOTAL. I hope you are having a great weekend and staying warm. It’s cold for us Georgia folks. My momma said it was 30 last night and is supposed to be in the high teens in a couple days. Brrrrrrrr Thank you for running for me!

Of course, it was cold and windy but I went out and ran for him!

Happy Running! What will keep you running during the colder weather?
