Weekly Run Down for 3.8.21-3.14.21: Races!! A Virtual and a Real One

We had spring-like weather for a few days.  I completed a virtual 5k. And I ran my second Pandemic race of 2021 – a five miler.  Another PW but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Last Week:

  • Monday – It was International Women’s Day and the weather cooperated with sunshine.  I was able to get my run in at UAlbany at lunch since I had to stop by my nearby office anyway.

my skirt had 261 on it.. you know what that means, right?

It was even more special since I ran this virtual race with Cari in NYC and Liz in the UK.  Truly “international.”

  • Tuesday – The temps were even warmer today and there was some sun… I managed to squeeze in another #weekofpi run to honor Kim. Unfortunately the wind was back.

starting to change my wardrobe – no beanie and no tights!!

  • Wednesday – So exciting that it actually felt like spring.  I had the day off due to some early morning appts and then a hiking date with two friends.  No running today (sigh) but a good day nonetheless. We decided on Plotterskill since my friends has not been there before. We were hoping to see some waterfalls and hopefully not too much ice or mud.

Well, it was not what we thought – very very icy steep slopes to scale up and down, endless uphill snowy climbs, dangerous rivers crossings….so 7.5 miles later (and 5 1/2 hours) I was very relived to be in one piece.  In fact, when we exited the last part of the trail, there was a sign “Trail closed due to dangerous conditions.” Yikes.

these pics were taken early on… for most of the hike, we were trying to stay upright.

so happy to see that wire to hold on to…

But the weather was beautiful – warm and sunny.  An afternoon off from work to spend with friends was wonderful. And though at many points, I yelled “I can’t do this,” I did it!!

  • Thursday – I wanted to get in a run since I skipped yesterday but a busy work day meant that the best time to run would be before work.  But I dawdled with my coffee and had to squeeze it in my neighborhood during lunch. However, I thought it a good idea to check out the water line trail….Note to self: mud is just as slippery as ice. It was sunny and a little breezy but it hit 50 degrees so no complaints here.

gone are the gloves, beanie and tights…soon the vest came off. I think I could have worn a tank and skirt.

After work, I quickly stopped by to pick up my bib for Saturday’s race

and then I met a friend to walk. Since the clocks get turned ahead on Sunday, next week, our walks will return to the rail trail after work 🙂

a little rain and then this… a lucky sign, right?

  • Friday – My plan was to rest up for my race the next day. It was sunny but not as warm as Thursday and a little windy and so I used my lunch hour to take a walk in town.
  • Saturday – A race. As with my other Pandemic races, I approached this with a relaxed attitude.  Connect with others and enjoy the experience. It is hard not to want to be competitive. But I know this is not the time for that. Unfortunately the warmish temps we had in previous days did not continue.  It was freezing. To make mattes worse, it was WINDY.  Seeing friends and participating in a “live” race was worth the discomfort.  I can’t wait to run another.

I didn’t thaw out until mile 3 lol

I was going to run again on Sunday but it was forecast to be even windier and cloudy so I sucked it up and stopped on the way home to run 5 more miles (although there may be have been more walking than running.) My 10 mile LSD streak continues!

I added a jacket and had to stop to eat my post-race lunch halfway.

You would think that he ran 10 miles!!

  • Sunday – With my run out of the way, that left the day for biking and hiking! I left early since it supposed to get windier and either snow or rain.

Well, you know my obsession with waterfalls so I went back to High Fall Conservation Area. I had been there last spring.  Boy, was I surprised to find zero ice and snow…dry as a bone.  That gave me plenty of safe places to explore.

3 waterfalls and marked and unmarked trails all to myself 🙂

On the the way I stopped at an apple orchard.

I mean it was “PI” day, right?

This Coming Week –

  • Monday –  run, walk
  • Tuesday – rest day, bike, walk with friends
  • Wednesday – run, walk
  • Thursday – run, walk with friends
  • Friday – rest day, bike, walk
  • Saturday –  LONG RUN
  • Sunday – rest day, bike, walk/hike

FFF: Breaking Up With Peloton

When in January, Peloton offered a FREE two month trial, I jumped on it.  I used it almost every time I did a short run and every time I rode my stationary bike.  I tried almost all of the instructors.  However, I never got around to trying it for strength training, walking or yoga.

I enjoyed the playlists. I enjoyed the instructors’ energy. I enjoyed the variety of both. And it seemed that all the “cool runners” were using Peloton. LOL. FOMO

But I chose not to continue once my trial was over.

Here’s FIVE reasons why:

1.Length of Running Classes (& Data)

The classes seemed to run either 30 minutes or 45 minutes.  I usually run 3 miles during the week or 10 miles on the weekend. It’s annoying to start the class after I start running or it finishes before I’m done. Then I have to take more than one class. Also I don’t have unlimited data so I have download the class when I have Wi-Fi, start the class on my iPhone and then turn off the data when I’m running outside. (I don’t have a treadmill or access to gym to run inside.)

2. Music Interrupted by Chatter

I love the Broadway tunes and the Artist Series and listening to many of my favorite artists.

I know that the instructors are trying to motivate you.  But if I choose a particular music, I actually want to listen to the music.

3. I Don’t Own a Treadmill

Most of the running classes are designed for the treadmill.  I always run outside.  So when I run, I have to ignore the cues for increasing elevation and speed. There are a few just audio running classes, but not as many.

4. Many Free Options for Strength Training and Yoga classes

If I ever decide to go back to yoga and/or do some strength training, there are zillions of free online classes and/or YouTube videos for both. Thanks Marcia and others for posting them.

Samara, my favorite instructor

5. Cost

The Peloton membership is NOT expensive but I feel that this money could be better spent. I had the $$ at the time since I was not socializing or racing or doing much of anything.  But I hope that changes in the future.

6. Missing my Podcasts

Image result for ali on the run podcast

and lastly, I used to listen to Podcasts when I ran.  Once I signed up for Peloton, I rarely had time to listen to them. I am missing Sarah, Nicole, Ali, and my other virtual podcasting friends.

Happy Running! Do you use Peloton? Why do you like it? If not, why not? Please share.

TT: Makeup On the Run?

The Tuesday Topic this week is: Makeup while running – yes or no?

Yes!

Here’s the Makeup-related items that I wear when I run:

  • Foundation – because it hides flaws in your skin (bags under your eyes lol) but mostly since it’s contains SUNSCREEN.
  • Lipstick – I just always do wear it (for COLOR) but also because it contains sunscreen and prevents my lips from getting dry and cracked.
  • Earrings – Always, usually hoops.
  • Eyeliner & Mascara – rarely but sometimes. (Rarely because I wear sunglasses and no one sees my eyes)
  • Sunglasses – Almost Always – I wear Contacts and my eyes are sensitive to sun and wind.

I still follow the same above during the Pandemic because I run most days and I do have ZOOM meetings. (Can’t scare my co-workers and friends away!)

The only issue has been that when I wear a gaiter, it fogs up my sunglasses.  Sometimes I do wear my glasses instead of my contacts…SAME!! (Luckily I’m not blind without my glasses and I just shove them in my pocket.)

Weekly Run Down for 3.1.21-3.7.21: Good Bye Snowy February. Hello Windy March!

February was a short month so not as many miles as I usually run but I am still on track for 1000 miles in 2021 (I think).

I completed a virtual 5k and 15k and an in-person half marathon.

I completed a local Fleet Feet February running challenge and am on track with the NYCRuns one.

It was free and now I have a $15 coupon to spend here – win. win

And I canceled my Peleton membership. I’ll explain why in a future post.

Seen on my most recent hike…I’m in love with micro spikes and frozen waterfalls.

I’ve continuing hiking and even ventured out on those icy trails.  So far in 2021, I’ve hiked on 15 different trails (7 of which were new to me).

I just discovered this very cool challenge.

Hoping for better weather in March but you never know.  If nothing else, I wish the snow would melt so my options for running routes increase. Some local races are happening. So far, I have only signed up for one.

Last Week:

  • Monday – A rainy windy day.  Due to my long run bring postponed, I declared today a rest day from running.  I rode the bike during lunch and went for a walk after work (inside the mall – the wind was insane.)

My last Peleton cycling class

Came home and the power went off…until 6 am the next morning!!

  • Tuesday – Another VERY windy COLD day but since it was dry, I went for a run at lunch. Brrrrrr.

holy cow! It was sunny but THAT wind!!! and my last Peleton run.

After work, I had a hair appt and that evening, I attended a ZOOM with some running friends.  A few have been wintering in Fla so it was nice to see them again.

  • Wednesday – I had more time today at lunch so I drove to do my lunch run. It was warmer and less windy than the day before (but still windy).

as you can see I ran on the school track to throw in a few fartleks into my run.

Getting my run done at lunch leaves me time to walk with a friend after work.

  • Thursday – Come on, what’s with the wind? Another windy day which always makes it feel colder and the run harder.  But I got it done again during an early lunch.

Drove to the rail trail. icy in some spots and clear in others. There’s hope for future runs here.

Another after work walk with a friend.  Glad to continue this daily habit.

too windy for outdoors and Pershia found her wings in the mall

  • Friday – After running 3 days in a row (even slow short ones), I needed a rest today. And though sunny, the wind was as fierce as ever. George to the rescue.
  • Saturday – Back on schedule for Saturday Long Run. We took a big risk and decided to see if the path was clear on the Nisky Bike Path. It was clear but sooo cold and windy.  Glad to have company on the whole ten miles.

the first 8 miles were much faster than I would normally run and thankfully this path had trees to shield us from most of the wind.

  • Sunday – Started the day with a bike ride and then the plan was, when it warmed up a little, to go off on a hike. I was thinking of maybe a winter fire tower climb (Dickinson Fire Tower)

The sun was so nice and I thought I was on the fire tower trail…but nope, I was not…still a nice 3 mile walk

It was such a nice day that I decided on another hike – Holly Hock Hollow Preserve.

some mud, some ice and lots of waterfalls

This Coming Week –

  • Monday –  Virtual ZOOMA Women’s Day 5k, walk with BFF
  • Tuesday – run, walk with friends
  • Wednesday – DAY OFF – rest day, hike with a friend, walk
  • Thursday – run, race bib pick up, walk with friends
  • Friday – rest day, bike, walk
  • Saturday – Electric City Five Miler, Run 5 more? walk/hike?
  • Sunday – Long Run?, walk/hike? (depends on what I choose to do on Saturday)

FFF: Ultimate Coffee Date for March 2021

It’s that time of the month…

Starbucks Coffee City Mug Collection- Florida, 16 Oz Cup

time to join up with Coco & Deborah
for their ultimate coffee date.

I live in upstate NY so it’s HOT coffee in the morning before work and red wine in front of the fireplace at night.

Spring arrives later this month and the days are getting longer. And my quarantine has ended. 🙂

But I’m still trying to hold onto memories of my warm sunny days in Florida.

1. Over coffee/wine…

I’d tell you that in addition to being relieved that I had gotten both of my COVID vaccines before I left for my Florida vacation, the CDC advised that you did not have to quarantine after 14 days post vaccine #2.  Many states have no quarantining requirements. Some states (like NY) have stricter ones. It’s all so confusing.

Image result for second covid vaccine

What are the travel requirements in the state where you live?

2.Over coffee/wine…

I’d tell you that contrary to popular belief, I felt safe from COVID while I was recently in Florida.  As a result, I am in the midst of planning our annual tennis trip to Naples (April 28-May 5.)  The snag will be that some of my friends are not over 65 so may not have gotten both of their vaccines yet.  It just may be a smaller group this year. In times, like this, it pays to be older.

looking forward to more shenanigans with these ladies

If you traveled during the pandemic, how did you feel?  Do you have any future travel plans?

3.Over coffee/wine…

I’d tell you that it was quite disheartening that both my feet still are painful when I run.  Obviously I can withstand the pain or I would not run and race half marathons but I definitely will NOT run another marathon (with foot pain.)  And yes, I’ve rested, gotten shots, new shoes, PT, etc.  And no, I do not plan to have surgery.

smiling through the pain

Any bunion/neuroma advice?  Do you run/race with non-injury-related pain?

4.Over coffee/wine…

I’d tell you that that I am not running as fast as I used to.  I am planning to embrace my slowness.  But that seems easier if you run long races… Not a problem yet since most races for 2021 are still cancelled.  I used love my weekly 5ks.

in faster times

Long distance or short distance races, which is your preference? Does finish time matter? Only answer if you have been running at least 10 years. (If not, you can still get faster.)

5.Over coffee/wine…

I’d tell you that in spite of what I said about my snail’s pace, I signed up for a five mile race on March 13. What was I thinking?

Image result for electric city 5 miler

I guess I was thinking back to my favorite 5 miler, the Delmar Dash (which will not happen again this year.)

That’s how long most of my 3 milers take now. lol

TT: What Did I Think About on my Last Run?

The Tuesday Topic this week is: What Did You Think About on Your Last Run

Usually I listen to a Podcast, Music or Peleton because I do NOT want to think.  LOL

Unfortunately my thoughts don’t always seem to be positive ones!!

Here’s how it went down during my recent run:

  • Work. My last training, My next training. A New training that I have to learn. (BTW: I teach online.) Stress.
  • Pandemic.  When will my friends got their vaccines? When will I be able to eat in a restaurant, go to a movie or have fun? Despair.
  • Running. Why do I have to walk so often? Why do I want to quit after one mile? Why does it feel hard? Is it like this for other runners? What is my pace, like14 m/m? Frustration.

And during the last 1/4 mile:

  • Work. Glad to be working from home. I can work wearing my running clothes and be out the door in minutes.  Relief.
  • Pandemic.  Being outside is the best thing right now.  I am so lucky that I get to do this. Gratitude.
  • Running. I did it. I didn’t quit. I didn’t die. Many others probably stayed inside.  Pride.

Weekly Run Down for 2.22.21-2.28.21 – Warm Up and End of the Quarantine

So a warm up here means that it hit 40 degrees. LOL

Tuesday was my “immune birthday” (14 days past my 2nd vaccine). And Friday, my 10 day quarantine ended!!

Winter continues as the ground hog promised.  However, I still managed to get in daily walks and all my runs OUTSIDE!!

Last Week:

  • Monday – A very windy grey day.  With possible snow and sleet predicted later today and Tuesday, I debated running during lunch but with 25mph winds and blowing snow, NOPE.  The bike it was.

I planned to go out for a walk after work but it was still windy and snowing even harder.

the result of staying indoors – one sock finished (Champ is the photobomber)

  • Tuesday – Still cold and grey but the wind was not as bad as Monday and it was WARMER so I was able to squeeze in a run during lunch.

I chose a main road for a change…not exciting but a wide shoulder and some deer in view. Started to snow again lightly just as I finished.

Hooray! At 1:30 pm, I was 14 days post vaccine #2. Mentally, it felt so good!

  • Wednesday – Another busy work day so I was only able to run after work.  I drove to UAlbany for my usual boring loop. And it was over 40 degrees.  Woo Hoo! Capris time!

  • Thursday – I hate to run three days in a row so I was going to ride my bike instead during lunch. But the sun was out (which is rare around here) so I went for a walk at a local park (even though it was quite windy and back down to the 30s.)
  • Friday – Bored with my neighborhood runs, I decided to take a drive and run elsewhere during lunch. I hit one of the neighborhood roads in town parallel to the rail trail, And it was sunny. Win. Win.

people in my town paint rocks and hide them. If you find one (which I did today), you have to post on FB and then hide it.

And at 10:48 am, my QUARANTINE ended!!!!!!!!!! Woo Hoo!

  • Saturday – Finally a LONG RUN with friends. Nope. Rain and snow in the forecast postponed it.  Instead I was happily able to do a ZOOM bike ride with my blogger buds.

so fun chatting with everyone including those across the ocean.

The hubby and I decided to celebrate our vaccine status with dining indoors – first in more than a year!!

  • Sunday – Rescheduled LONG run.  Back at The Crossings (where we will be until the snow melts). I was thrilled to be joined by friends. I ran ALL 10 miles with one person or another. I felt like I was dragging the caboose but my feet hurt less than usual so life is good.

Rain was predicted for later but I waited and there was only a quick drizzle. So off I drove for another hike and waterfalls viewing at Christmas Preserve.

It was icy so definitely needed my spikes but so pretty and peaceful.

This Coming Week –

  • Monday –  run, walk
  • Tuesday – rest day, bike, hair appt, Sole Sisters ZOOM
  • Wednesday – run, walk with friends
  • Thursday – run, walk with friends
  • Friday – rest day, bike, walk

Five Runfessions for February ’21

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

When I went to Florida this month, I was more worried about a negative reaction from my second COVID vaccine than catching COVID.

Phew! Felt totally normal!

Are you worried about a negative reaction to the COVID vaccine?

2. I runfess…

In spite of all the warnings that Florida was the worst place to visit during the Pandemic, I felt safe and enjoyed my visit.

Masks were required in all places that I visited.

Have you gone on any vacations during the Pandemic?

3. I runfess…

Even with sore feet and climate acclimation difficulties, I enjoyed running these 13.1 miles more than my local one in November.

my post-race Atlantic dip may have been a factor…

How do you feel about race-cations? Are those races more fun than your local ones?

4. I runfess…

I did wear my Garmin for the first time in exactly a year.  I used it to see what mile I was on. The pace was so depressing that I deleted all the stats.  I think I definitely enjoy racing without a watch.  If all that matters is completing the distance, why bother?  This is the new me because I used to post all my split times and over-analyze the race and how I could improve on the next one.

Mar 2019 – checking my watch before even crossing the finish line?

Anyone else just care about getting to the finish line? Or do your splits really matter to you? Do  you post them in your race recap?

5. I runfess…

Our local running club has offered a new in-person race in March.

No surprise – I signed up. I’m a sucker for races.

Anyone else sign up for any in-person races for 2021? Do you like to run new races or do you prefer ones that you’ve done before?

Publix A1A Fort Lauderdale Half Marathon Race Recap

2020 Publix Fort Lauderdale A1A Marathon, Half Marathon, 5K, Komen 6K, Kids Race - Fort Lauderdale, FL - Half Marathon - Marathon - Running

February 14, 2021

It seems like I’ve been planning this race forever (since last February, I believe).

So this year, I did run the Publix A1A Fort Lauderdale Half Marathon as my 43th Half Marathon (49th if you count the six 2020 virtuals) for these reasons:

  • A warmer weather race-cation opportunity
  • I had a flight credit from a cancelled vacation.
  • I had enough points for 4 nights in a hotel.
  • It was held on Presidents Day weekend (one less day to take off from work)
  • It was advertised as a scenic course with ocean views.
  • The race’s COVID-19 plan provided enough safety for its racers IMO.
  • I’ve never been to Fort Lauderdale.
  • I had four friends that lived nearby (for the winter.)
  • I had gotten BOTH of my COVID vaccines.

Half Marathon Training:

If you follow my posts, you also know that I am not strict about following a training plan.  I ran my last half marathon in November (an in-person one.)  I didn’t wear a watch. It was very hilly and so I was thrilled to just finish.

Upstate Classic HM

As with all my half marathon training, I did not really care about my week day runs. They were usually 3 easy miles.

However, I do try to do longer runs on the weekend. I did manage ALL year to run at least 10 miles every weekend.  I even got in one 11 miler and one 12 miler before this race.

Though I did feel somewhat prepared to run 13.1 miles, my goal for this half marathon was still to just finish and to ENJOY RUNNING A REAL RACE!!!

Pre-Race Activities and Preparations:

Although the half marathon was scheduled for Sunday morning, I arrived (with no flight drama) in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday afternoon. I rented a car there and drove North to Boca Raton where I spent the next two days (staying in a hotel rather than at my friends’ places.)

I got to hang out with my four friends while visiting the beaches, gardens, bird sanctuaries and outdoor restaurants. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there (even wearing a mask almost all the time).

On Saturday afternoon, I left Boca, headed back to Fort Lauderdale to the expo to pick up my race packet, then returned North to Pompano Beach for a Lighthouse Tour (by Boat) followed by dinner across from the Pompano Beach pier. Instead of my usual pre-race pizza, I chose Shrimp n Grits (and hoped that it was an adequate carb loading substitute.)

Finally I arrived at my Fort Lauderdale hotel in time to organize my usual race outfit (tank, skirt, cap) and hit the sack earlyish.

Race Day:

I brought my oatmeal and coffee from home with me and got up around 3:00 am to get ready and have breakfast in my hotel room. I was a little nervous when it was already 78 degrees with 91% humidity – ouch! Not much I could do except leave off the compression calf sleeves and the throw-away clothing.

I had decided to purchase in advance the VIP parking. For $29, it was affordable (hey how many races did I NOT pay to run in 2020?) and piece of mind that early in the morning.  You had to be at the race by 4:30 am!!

The parking lot was at a hotel and very easy to find.  And you were able to use the hotel restrooms (and there were many!) and the race start (and finish) was right across the street. It was a little breezy so I put on my DIY arm warmers but they sure didn’t stay on long.

You were required to wear a mask until you crossed the start line and everyone complied. The runners were so friendly and from all over the US. This was actually the best part of the race….making new friends.

view while waiting to start

There was a staggered start. – 20 runners at a time, 6 ft apart.  You lined up by estimated finish time. I lined up behind the 2:15 pacer.  however most runners around me said that they were slower but didn’t want to wait that long to start. I felt the same way!

This may have been the last time I saw this sign

Eventually the race started with the announcer reminding runners to throw their bib in the trash and not on the course. (You would be given another mask after you crossed the finish line to wear in the finish/food/band area.)

I started around 6:30 am.

I’ll do my best to recap the race below. (Warning: it’ll be long…)

My plan, as usual, was to stop and walk briefly at every water stop (so I wouldn’t get dehydrated) and to stop and walk longer to eat a GU around every 3-4 miles.  I planned to walk whenever necessary and NOT RACE it. It was VERY hot (85 degrees with 95% humidity) and I didn’t want to end up in an ambulance.

looks hilly. but it wasn’t!

I will also try to put a positive spin on my recap. Honestly, it felt harder than it should have. For the first time during a race, I wondered if I would be able to finish. (I didn’t even feel that way during my marathon.)
Miles 1-4:

We started running south (with the ocean on the left) and ran along route 1A and around the point where we viewed some gorgeous oceanside homes.

As always, I felt more energetic during the beginning miles. Unfortunately, my feet hurt from the first step to the last. I was disappointed but was prepared for the pain. I was trying to run at a  consistent pace. I was not very successful at this as the race went on.

I stopped at each water stop as planned. They were at about every 1 1/2 miles which normally would be frequent enough but not when it over 85 degrees.  After the first few water/Gatorade stops, I started taking TWO cups of water – one to drink and one to pour on myself.

Around mile 3, a lady went down.  At that point, I decided to slow down and make sure that it would not be me. Now we were heading north toward the race start (with the ocean on the right).

I was very excited to finally get to see the sun rise over the ocean without clouds blocking the sun. I think it was around mile 4 and I ran over to snap a photo.

Miles 4-6:

As you can see, we were still running with the water on our right.  I was desperately trying to focus on the beautiful views and not on how hot it was and how dizzy/nauseous it was making me feel. I took my first GU at this point and slowed down which made me feel better.

fake smile

I continued slogging along running until a water stop.  But my running felt like a crawl. I used my watch to see what mile we were on. The mile markers were painted on the ground (very lightly and often crossed out from last year’s course).

Miles 6-10:

Although I loved looking at the ocean, it did get monotonous after awhile. Other runners told me that in previous years, it was not a loop and so not as much ocean views but a variety of views including a park.

Many runners were dressed up in their tutus for Valentine’s Day and that was at least a distraction.

I just continued putting one step in front of another. I was determined to finish even if it meant walking the rest of the race.

The turn around which seemed like a marathon away finally arrived around mile 8 and then we did a loop until mile 9.

Then we returned onto 1A with now the ocean on our left.  The slower half marathoners were now heading in the opposite direction (as opposed to the speedy ones that passed me by before.)

Around this time, I ate another GU and started drinking more water and walking longer at the stops. And there was the blister forming on my left foot – ouchy!

Miles 10-13.17:

By this point, I was struggling big time. Not sure why. The course was flat!

The Vaccine? Too much activity on previous days? Not enough sleep?  The heat?  The humidity? My feet? ???

Whatever the reason, I knew that it would NOT prevent me from finishing.  I kept thinking that there were marathon runners completing the course TWICE!!!!!!  I certainly can do it once.

One last GU and I was able to re-energize and sprint toward the finish line.

I crossed at 2:35:58.

A big PW but I was thrilled to have finished and have “run” a RACE!!

I was immediately handed a bottle of water, a mask and the finisher medal wrapped in plastic.

It took me a while to get up enough energy to move from sitting on that wall.  I first headed to get some chocolate milk and then sat again and chatted with a few runners (all happy but very very hot and sweaty.)

Next I dragged my aching feet to the ocean and boy, did that feel good.

not sure how long I stood there?

Then I decided that I needed to eat. Nothing really appealed to me though there was quite a variety but my stomach felt too queasy for tacos, burritos, refried beans…

I opted for some fruit, cookies, rice and a cold brew. I think I also took some other items and drinks but skipped the beer (before 10 am.)

Eventually, I headed back to my car since my friend Barbara was picking me up at my hotel in order to meet two other friends for a airboat ride on the Everglades.

perfect activity post-race…nice breeze on the boat and I didn’t have to walk anywhere.

Additional Race Reflections:

The Good:

  • A real Race
  • 2 day expo with mandatory mask requirements
  • A good number of booths and food/drink samples at the expo.
  • Excellent communication about every aspect of the race before, during and after the race. – FB video on 1-19-21 and many Q & A’s.
  • Easy packet pick-up
  • VIP parking available and city lots (COVID rate) and public lots
  • Sufficient number of port-a-potties at start/finish and along the course
  • Staggered start – 6 ft apart, 20 in each corral (.5 mile area). Each corral started every 20 seconds.
  • Spectators required to wear masks.
  • Sanitizing stations throughout the race.
  • Water stops 1.2-1.5 miles apart – 6 so you could stop 12 times.
  • Disposable masks given out at the finish line.
  • Volunteers/police directing traffic.
  • Pacers.
  • Many racers dressed up for Valentine’s Day.
  • 6 hour time limit for the race (since it included a marathon)
  • Pre-packaged food post-race and safe places to eat.
  • Music (Band) in the finish area
  • Custom Sand Castle
  • Lots of photographers on the course
  • Sunny weather
  • Beautiful course. Water views throughout.
  • Friendly staff, participants, volunteers, residents.
  • A large variety of food (tacos, burritos, fruit, cookies, beer, chocolate milk, cold brew, etc.)
  • Ocean near the finish area (to go swimming)
  • Age groups awards mailed.
  • A real race.

made out of sand

The Bad:

  • Early 5:45 am start time (but probably necessary due to temps)
  • ALL COVID Restrictions (but very necessary).
  • Cooler and less humid temps would have been nicer.
  • Large number of racers (but 50% capacity of the original) – about 2000 runners.
  • No Bag Check –  not necessary if you parked close by
  • Ocean views could get monotonous (but necessary due to revised course and no shuttle to the start)
  • I had no friends running this with me (missed you Cari!)

The Ugly:

  • Nothing 🙂

the dolphins move back n forth

Would I recommend this race?

Yes. Yes. Yes.

It was super well-organized. Special attention was paid to EVERY detail.  The course was scenic. And if the pandemic ends and it returns to the previous course, it will be even better.

Final Stats:

I am so proud that my body can run even when the conditions are not optimal. Yup, pain is temporary. I quickly forgot the next day how much it had hurt.

A far cry from my 2:06:52 PR in 2017 and my NYC qualifying time of 2:11:15 in 2019.

This old broad will just have to be content finishing upright from now on, I guess.

Next Up:

Druthers Helderberg to Hudson Half Marathon. (on a revised course – same as the Fall Classic)

Two Week Run Down: 2.8.21-2.21.21: I’m Baaack!!

Well, I left frigid, snowy Upstate New York for FOUR gloriously sunny warm days in Florida.

Sunshine is the best medicine

with no SNOW

I took lots of walks, saw sunrises on the ocean, explored the nearby sights, took boat rides, visited with my friends and ran a half marathon. I felt renewed (and even safe from COVID.)

Now this week, back to reality….

2.8.21-2.14.21:

  • Monday – #nevermissamonday. The temps dropped again and it was in the teens.  Still had to get it done and ran during lunch (in the ‘hood to save time).

Thanks to sunshine, Bernie and an awesome rock playlist, it wasn’t too painful

After work, I headed out to meet a friend for a walk.

Then I rushed home because my Mah Jongg group had a Book Club ZOOM.  We all read The Vanishing Half.  And I hadn’t seen them in forever. (They play online on Friday evenings. I am waiting until we can play in person again.)

I am liking wearing my glasses now instead of contacts.

  • Tuesday – One day of sunshine. That was it. I woke up to snow. I wondered if it would stop in time for me to run during lunch. Nope, it continued snowing all morning. I thought about skipping the run. But Wednesday and Thursday would be too busy to fit in a run so I just threw on my trail shoes and off I slid, I mean ran. And running in the fresh snow was actually fun.  Not even as slippery as I thought. As always, I was glad that I didn’t chicken out and stay inside.

I veered off onto the main road for a bit but kept getting hit with slush as cars passed me by (that’s was the worst)

However, the highlight of my day was that:

so relieved to have it over…

Later I met friends for a long walk before dinner.

  • Wednesday – I was nervous that I would get a reaction to my shot but all I felt was a slightly sore arm (even less sore than shot #1). Relieved, for sure.

No time for running but I did get in a bike ride during lunch.

  • Thursday – Early morning flight to Fort Lauderdale. I was shocked when I landed, the pilot said that it was 88 degrees. I rented a car and drove to my hotel in North Boca Raton. I quickly changed my clothes and headed off to meet two college friends for dinner in Deerfield Beach. We had great food and view of the ocean. It was so much fun catching up.

Barbara (in blue) was my college roommate and she winters in Fla. Patty was vacationing there for a few weeks. All three of us spent our junior year of college in France together.

  • Friday – I got up early to catch the sunrise. It was about a 10 minute drive and it was lovely but too cloudy to see the sun.

I decided to stay there to do my last run before my race (and to get acclimated to the Florida heat and humidity.) I was illegally parked so I split up my run.

I finished up on a trail outside my hotel.

It was really nice. I wished that I had more time…

Afterward, my friend Barbara picked me up and we spent several hours on the beach. Hot but heavenly.

I obviously packed a lot of activities into my day.  Again I had to rush back to my hotel to change and meet my friend Fonda (sister of a tennis friend) at Morikami Gardens. I had never been there even though I come to this area most winters.

so pretty and relaxing

Our next stop was my favorite bird sanctuary, Wakodahatchee. And it did not disappoint except for no alligators this time.

We ended the day with dinner at a restaurant with outdoor dining – shrimp tacos and key lime pie (my 2 Fla favorites).

  • Saturday – Another morning drive for an ocean sunrise. Again it was cloudy but still worth the drive.

This morning, I had plans to hang out with my friend, Michelle, whom I had taught French with many years ago.  We met at another Bird Sanctuary (Green Cay) and chatted away the time.

After our meet-up, I checked out of my hotel and headed south toward Fort Lauderdale. I decided to stop on the way in Pompano Beach and visit Hillsboro Lighthouse (by boat). They only offer tours once a month and today was the day.  I arrived at 11:30 and there was ONE seat left on the last tour boat – 3 pm. I took it but that meant I had to re-arrange my plans and check into my hotel after and go to the expo first to pick up my race stuff. It was held at a mall in a former Neiman Marcus store…well organized and lots of booths and samples.  The only thing I bought was another pair of Goodrs (cuz I don’t have that many lol) but I did a lot of food and drink sampling (all done safely with bars and cans/bottle etc)

Valentine’s Day theme shirt

Then I headed back to Pompano for my boat tour. It was awesome and of course, I climbed the 195 steps to the top of the light house. (I think it’s my 4th Florida Light House).

I still had time left on my parking meter so I decided to have dinner there at an outdoor restaurant overlooking the ocean and the pier.

I had shrimp and grits (another Fla favorite) instead of my usual pre-race pizza and then walked along the pier.

Finally, I arrived in Fort Lauderdale to check into my hotel. It was an early night, getting my #flatme ready and preparing to get up around 3 am.

ready or not

  • Sunday – Race Day.  The race started at 5:45 am (ouch) but they recommended that you arrive at 4:30 am.  When I got up, it was already 78 degrees with 95% humidity.  This made me a little nervous to say the least.  Not much I could do. Since I had gotten a discount on the race, I decided to purchase VIP (hotel) parking just to make things smoother. I got there probably too early but had lots of time to walk around (use the hotel restrooms) and chat with other runners. There was a staggered start and you wore a mask until you passed the start and then tossed it in the trash. Everything felt safe and was well organized. It was a pretty course with ocean views throughout (though I guess it was a lot nicer in previous years with more variety). It was VERY hard.  My feet hurt. It was really hot and humid but I finished. No regrets. You were given another mask when you crossed the finish line. I sat for a while, met more runners and finally headed into the ocean to cool off.

yes, I got my first sunrise without clouds around mile 4.

After a hot shower and change of clothes, I met friends for an airboat ride on the Everglades. (Glad it was a boat ride not a hike cuz my feet were not happy with me). We were disappointed not to see any alligators (too hot and sunny, I guess) but we still had loads of fun.

On the way home, we stopped for dinner at a Greek restaurant (We ate outside and the food was delish.)

Last Week:

  • Monday – Last day in Florida and I tried to make the most of it. My legs felt pretty good however I decided not to run but to instead explore a nearby nature preserve.

Afterward, I had reservations for a boat ride on the New River/Intercoastal.  It was a 1 1/2 hour narrated tour…so interesting to hear and see where the millionaires live and boat.

still hot and sunny and I was loving every minute of it

I had lunch along the water and then headed back to eventually check out of my hotel and return my car.  Unfortunately, my perfect vacation hit a snag.  My second flight that evening got cancelled. That meant that I would be stuck in Charlotte NC for the night and would have to fly home the next morning.  (This type of flight drama is something that I experience often.)

  • Tuesday – I had luckily taken the day off from work to recover from my vacation. Instead I had to still fly home.  It all worked out. It was cold, icy and dreary at home. I decided to stay in and do laundry. Starting my Quarantine. Not much of a problem since I work at home.  It just meant that my walks and runs would be solo until it’s over.
  • Wednesday – Back to work and back to squeezing a run in during lunch.

very cold and windy … my body was in shock

Sad to not be able to join anyone for a walk, I walked around my neighborhood before dinner.

  • Thursday – Another solo run during lunch

didn’t feel like “a glazed donut” but like a popsicle…it was cold and NO sun

And a lonely walk after work.

  • Friday – Snow. Snow. Glad it was a scheduled rest day. I renewed my relationship with George during lunch. I’m weaning myself off Peleton and watched TV instead.
Image result for bridgerton

I didn’t like it at first but now I’m hooked.

and got out for a snowy walk after work.  Snow is much prettier if it doesn’t impact your runs lol

  • Saturday – Being in Quarantine does have its advantages. I was able to join my Blogger friends for a ZOOM bike ride this morning instead of doing my usual Saturday long run with friends.

I took a drive in the afternoon in search of waterfalls. And I did find two.

Buttermilk Falls (top) and Cohoes Falls (bottom)

  • Sunday – A sunnier and less windy day so I postponed my run until today. Running alone is not much fun but I did get it done. (Funny thing was that the temp was 21 degrees and the date 2/21/21 but no, I didn’t even consider running 21 miles but 2.1 did enter my mind lol.)

The sun helped but still hard. I may have shed a few tears as Becs crossed the finish line. I also listened to a podcast as well to pass the time.

Too nice a day to stay indoors so I decided to explore some new trails.

Grafton State Park – 25 miles of trails – need to come back here!

This Coming Week –

  • Monday –  run, walk
  • Tuesday – rest day, bike, walk with friends
  • Wednesday – run, walk with BFF
  • Thursday – run, walk with friends
  • Friday – rest day, bike, walk
  • Saturday –  LONG RUN
  • Sunday – rest day, bike, walk/hike
