Half Marathon #12

In case you are a new reader of my blog, here is a summary of my previous 11 half marathons:

1. My first and BEST was the Naples Half Marathon in January of 2011.  My goal was just to finish and I did in 2:28:27  (gun time, no chip timing).

2. I immediately registered for the 1st annual Lake George Half Marathon in April of that year.  Unfortunately, I had to run in sleet & freezing rain for 13.1 miles & without my Garmin. My time was 2:22:39 (gun time, no chip timing) and a PR until this year.

3. Out with strained Achilles for 6 weeks during the summer of 2011 delayed my training for the Adirondack Half Marathon  (so I walked the 2nd half of the race.) I finished in 2:44:59. It was still fun because I was running it with lots of friends.

4. Again impulsively, I decided to sign up for the inaugural Fall Foliage Half Marathon as a training run.  This was my hilliest half but I finished in 2:32:50.

5. My goal race of that year was the Santa Clarita Half Marathon that I was running with a friend in California.  This time it only poured for half the race and I finished with a disappointing 2:30:12.

After 5 half marathons in 2011, there were NONE in 2012.

6. My next Half Marathon, the First Watch Half Marathon in Sarasota, Fla came in 2013 16 months after serious ankle surgery and 5 months after a foot stress fracture.  I was just glad to be running again. The course was beautiful, my friends were waiting at the end and I was happy with my 2:33:59 time.

7. The Mohawk-Hudson Half Marathon in the fall of 2013 was supposed to be the one where I would be seriously training and hopefully get a PR. Then I broke my foot. With a late start to my training and my weekly miles not what I would have liked, again this half marathon was just “I’ll be happy to finish.” So I did in 2:24:14. I enjoyed it since it was my first half where I slept in my own bed the night before.

8. For the Love Run Half Marathon in the Spring of 2014, I was injury-free for the whole training but I trained during an awfully cold, snowy winter.  Despite running in monsoon rains, I managed to PR at 2:22:35. I made new running friends and we had fun during our weekend in “wet” Philly.

9. Last summer, after running a 10 mile race, I impulsively registered for the Saratoga Springs Half Marathon.  This taught me to never run one in the summer.  It was very humid & I felt sick so I struggled to a 2:26:00 finish.

10. Impromptu and free. I registered for the Hangover Half Marathon and ran it as a training run on a cold, windy, lonely, boring course. And it was my fastest at 2:18:33.  Go figure?

11.  Training in frigid temps and running in Florida I thought would give me problems but the stars were aligned and I had the BEST.HALF.EVER in West Palm Beach. Beautiful weather, awesome scenery, a big PR and age group win. I sprinted to a 2:09:40 finish.

Now for #12. This winter was the coldest I’ve ever run in…sub-zero day after sub-zero day. Not ideal for training in addition to quite a few short March races and a trip to California which interfered with my long runs.

Nevertheless, I am super excited for this race.

I will be visiting my college buddy, Andrea who lives about an hour north. (This time unfortunately she will have just had shoulder surgery so it won’t the best time to visit.)

The Daily Burn, an online fitness training web site just named the best half marathons across the country. In New Jersey that designation goes to the Asbury Park Half Marathon.

According to Emily Faherty, the article’s author describing the Asbury Park Half, “This flat and fast race is in the land of Bruce Springsteen, with local icon Tillie as its funny-faced mascot. You’ll run through the small area beach towns, along the historic boardwalk and finish with the “RunAPalooza” post-race party.”

This race should be scenic and a good time. Fingers crossed for NO rain!

Here are my lofty goals:

Goals:

A. PR (finish under 2:09:40)

B. Win an Age Group Award 

C. Finish Faster than my previous PR (under 2:18:33 )

D. Finish under 2 1/2 hours

Tuesdays on the Run: Spring Training Update

This week’s topic is: Spring Training Update

My training this Spring is going to be pretty informal:

  • Mondays – FRW training group run – usually 3 miles with some speed work mixed in
  • Tuesdays – tennis
  • Wednesdays and/or Thursday – 3-4 easy miles
  • Fridays – gym – upper body machines
  • Saturday or Sunday – a race with some extra miles for a longish run

I am currently tapering for my half marathon on Saturday!!

This is the only race that I have never missed – so this will be my 8th time.

And finally another half marathon about 1 1/2 hours south.

I will be traveling to Denver, CO for a conference and get back the night before for this hilly 10 mile race.

June 20, 2015 – my 2nd year – loved it last year – this year I will be jetlagged.

Last Long One

Saturday or Sunday, depending on a race or the weather.

This past weekend, I was tempted but decided NOT to race.

I thought I might run the Rabbit Ramble 4 miler like I did last year.  You get a shirt and gloves & I won my age group. But I have raced the past 3 weekends and I felt that I should relax and run 12 miles.  (Ha ha..relax & 12 miles in the same sentence.)

I also could go to my FRW Training Group run on Saturday which I have missed the past 3 weekends that I was racing and then continue running until I completed 12 miles.

Then there was the weather forecast.

Will winter ever end??

So I went back and forth and finally decided to do my long run on Sunday.

Well, Saturday was not rainy or snowy as predicted but it was cold and so windy…40 mph wind gusts.

Instead of running, I spent the afternoon with my mentee, Amanda and her 2 sons.  I hadn’t seen them since Christmas. They played on the playground in the park and then we went to an Easter Egg hunt. I was soooo cold!

Today I was determined to get my 12 mile run done.  I asked Judy who I ran with last weekend to accompany me on part of it.

It was cold in the 30s but 20s with the windchill (Yes, It is April!!) but not as windy as yesterday. I got to the bike path early to run 4 miles before she arrived.

I headed west toward lock 7.  It was sunny but boy was it windy.

Then I turned around at mile 2 and I was actually warm running with the sun in my face.

I actually had a decent run despite the wind and the walking at about a 10 minute/mile pace.

When I got back to my car, I changed my hat, gloves and took off my fleece vest.

Judy was already there waiting, I’m glad she came. I did not feel like running 8 more miles alone.

We tackled 8 miles slowly. 4 miles out and then back heading in the opposite direction from my earlier run.

It was a nice to have someone to chat with while running. Judy may run slower but she runs at a more steady pace.  I, on the other hand, run faster and tire myself out and have to walk.  In the end, we finished together and stayed together most of the run.

The sun started to go in but the wind had died down quite a bit. I made the right decision running those 4 mile earlier.

12 miles done!  After a long hot shower, I enjoyed a nice Easter dinner with my hubby, mil and 2 stepsons.

2 weeks to go!!! Ready or not, Asbury Park, we I come!

However, since this is the month before my half marathon, I should have run more miles.  I’ll blame the cold weather and my trip to California.

So this month, I was lucky to get to spend 4 sunny warms days in California where I ran, hiked and watched tennis.

  • Run my 5k race under 10 min. mile pace.
  • Win an age group award.
  • Run with my GOTR running buddy.
  • Run at least 85 miles.

Runfessions March

This month I’m linking up again with Marcia’s Healthy Slice for Runfessions.  This my third Runfessions post.   I think will continue to do this monthly. Many of my Runfessions from last month repeated themselves… Here are this month’s Runfessions:

1.  I did not go to the gym nor did I go to any yoga classes. I had good intentions. But I always seem to have something more important to do.  Yeah, I know that’s not a good excuse.  If I really wanted to, I could find the time.

2. Last month, I was good about not buying ice cream  This month, not so much. I got addicted to this in California and it was on sale so I bought some more. image I’ve also had soft ice cream. as well. Several times!!

3.  I added 2 more races to my spring schedule.

This was too tempting.  I work at a law school and it is 2 days before a race so it will be a training run.

I got in the lottery so I had to do it, right? And I have been whining about not being able to do my long runs on the weekend because of too many races.

4.  I bought more running clothes that I don’t need.

5. I’ve been skipping long runs. I am casual about my week day run distances but when I am training fora half marathon, I always have a schedule and try to keep to it.  I increase my long runs every weekend by 1 mile until I get to 12 and then I taper to 8.  It’s got me through so far and I even PRed on my 11th in January. My next one is April 18th.. week 7 – 8 miles – Nope – in California, too busy, too hot… only hiked week 8 – 9 miles – Nope – 4 mile race, too tired, rained…after ran/walked 3 more so only ran 7 week 9 – 10 miles – Sorta – 5 mile race and after ran/walked 5 more slow ones image week 10 – 11 miles – Sorta – 5 mile race and after ???- hopefully 6 more

Good News

I have arrived in Palm Springs.

And it is sunny and warm.

Mary and I are planning to run/hike on the Bump N Grind Trail today:

I was able to re-book my return flight to stay an extra day.  I will now be able to attend the BNP Paribas Tennis Championship at Indian Wells.  The first round of the women matches takes place on Wednesday and I am now leaving on Thursday.

Really, I am hopeful of catching men like Federer, Nadal, Djokovic practicing.

AJH,who was lucky enough to get into the NYC Half Marathon lottery, also got into the Vermont City Marathon Relay and we are running it a 2-person team.

I have heard that this is an awesome race and though I was not planning on running another half marathon, I am so excited to be part of it.

West Palm Beach Half Marathon – Ocean Views and in Florida in the winter .YAY! and visiting 4 friends too!

This one would have been #1 but I already did it!!

1. Shamrock 5K – I would have liked to run a longer race like I did last year but this one fit.  I am so excited to be running this race with my friend Mary in CA and also get to watch some of the qualifying matches at the BNP Paribas Open Tennis Championships (and maybe see some of the stars practicing.)

2.  Shamrock Shuffle – This is a new one.  I love new races and it is 5 miles.

3. I didn’t get into the NYC Half Marathon so I instead registered for the Asbury Park Half Marathon to keep me running through the winter. I have a friend that lives an hour from this race and it’s supposed to be  the “Best Half in New Jersey – One of Best in the Country.” The best part, I will be running along the ocean!!!!!

4. Mastodon Challenge– It is hilly so it will be a challenge and it is on my birthday.  How could I not race on my birthday?

5.  I also did not get into the Covered Bridges Half Marathon on June 7 (sold out in 24 min.) so instead I registered for the first annual Walkway Half Marathon.  It’s in Poughkeepsie which is about 1.5 hours away. The course will include the William R. Steinhaus Dutchess Rail Trail and the Walkway Over the Hudson as well as Marist College and the Hudson Valley Rail Trail. (It is hilly – the only negative.)

Reflections On My Last Half Marathon

I had a great half marathon in West Palm Beach, Florida.

All the stars were aligned.  How could I not?

  • I was uninjured and not even coming off an injury

  • The course was FLAT

  • It was cool but not too cool at the start and during the race, it was warm but not too warm.

  • There was barely any wind.

  • You ran almost the whole race with water views.

  • I was relaxed.

As a result, I had a 9 minute PR and won my age group.  Perfect, right?

Don’t get me wrong.  It didn’t come easy.  Running does NOT come easy to me.

I followed a flexible training plan. I tried to be more consistent with my running.  Most weeks I ran 4 times (yellow squares). Even when it was cold, I got out there.

I love to race and I am happy that I ran some races (blue squares) too.  For me, races are my speed work.

In addition, the first 5 weeks, I did speed work on Mondays as part of a running group. After that, the speed work disappeared.

But for me, the important part are the long runs. And I think I got them all in: 8, 9.3, 8, 8, 9.3, 11, 12, 13.2, 8.

What was missing?

I would have liked to do more cross-training.  I played tennis once a week but I wish I had done more yoga to increase my flexibility and have gone to the gym more often to do some strength training exercises.

I only went ONCE

It also would have been even more enjoyable knowing someone else at the race.  It is always nice to share race experiences with someone you know.

And of course, no one likes pain and my blisters hurt!!  But they were temporary and went away quickly.  (I was able to run a 15K a week later.)

As I write this, I am on Week 1 of the same training plan for the Asbury Park Half Marathon on April 18, 2015.

I registered for 3 half marathons in 2015.

The West Palm Beach race was supposed to be palm trees and sunshine and a race to enjoy being away from the cold.

The Walkway Half on June 13, 2015 is supposed to be a new cool race over the new bridge. There should be people I know running it. But it may be pretty hilly.

I was planning on the Asbury Park race to be my goal (PR) race.

However, after this past half marathon, things have changed in my mind.  Of course, I will train and run the best race I can.  But I no longer feel the PR pressure.  If 2:09:40 is my fastest time, I can live with that.

Asbury Park will be along the ocean and should be scenic.  But as we know, April can still be cold and windy.  I plan to enjoy it and we’ll see how it turns out.

Tuesdays on the Run: My Worst Races & What They Taught Me

This week’s topic is: My Worst Race(s) & What They Taught Me

Worst races can happen for many reasons. So here are a few of my worsts:

Worst Weather  – this would be a tie for the Lake George Half Marathon and the Love Run Half Marathon.  Both were run in a COLD downpour for the whole 13.1 miles. I was freezing and wet and very uncomfortable.

Worst Pain – this would be again a tie for the Runner’s World 5k and the Freihofer’s Run 2013.  Both were run with foot injuries. I had a stress fracture in my right foot for the RW race and a broken bone in my left foot for the FRW.

What I learned: I am stronger than I thought.  I can push through anything if it is important enough. I enjoy racing enough to run even through less than optimal conditions.

Worst Feeling (Physically) after the race – This would be after the Saratoga Springs Half Marathon.  I had a virus and it was hot and very humid.  I felt sick the whole race but stuck it out.  After the race, I almost passed out twice. UGH!

What I learned: Hydration is very important.  Summertime may not be the best time for me to run a half marathon.

Worst Feeling (Mentally) – This would be after the Santa Clarita Half Marathon in CA. It was my 5th half that year and I trained really well for it.  I was expecting a PR.  Well, it didn’t happen for whatever the reason (rain, jet lag, altitude, etc.) When I knew I wouldn’t, I kinda gave up.  Afterwards, I felt very disappointed and that ruined the whole race experience for me. My friend also did not run well. So we both just wallowed in self pity.

What I learned: Do not place so much importance on getting a PR. Anything can happen during a race and completing it is a victory in itself.  Just enjoy every race experience.
