Veteran’s Day Dash 5k Race Recap

This was a new race for me.  I usually work on Veteran’s Day.  But now I have the day off and Holly & Jackie from my running group recommended it.

They said that the course though boring, was pretty flat.  Perfect, I needed to do one more run before Sunday’s 15k race, anyway.

The race started at 10 am.  I actually could sleep in.  The temps were in the 50s too and it seemed like a perfect running day.

But I was wrong.  It was very windy – 20 mph winds and the temps were dropping.  It felt like it was in the 30’s.

The race was held at a high school and it started on the track.

img_3054

There was lots of parking and even real bathrooms. I picked up my bib and shirt and returned to my car to stay warm.

img_3055

long sleeved and cotton – now I have another throw-away shirt LOL

Eventually I had to venture out to start the race.  There were almost 400 racers (many high school boys wearing speedos!!)  I decided not to wear my jacket and left it near the start.

img_3056

I found several friends including Gary, fellow blogger Christine and Holly.  We started together and toward the front (since it wasn’t chip timed). They were all faster than me so I decided to use them as pacers.

The race started by running around the track and then onto the roads of the campus.  This is a huge campus so though the scenery was not very exciting, you didn’t have to worry about traffic.

vdd-course

As much as I could, I tried to run the tangents and keep my speedy friends in my view.  It felt somewhat like a horse race but I was always bringing up the rear.  Holly was way ahead for the first 2 miles.  Then came Christine followed by Gary. As Holly’s pace slowed, Christine took the lead. As we headed toward the home stretch (the track again), Gary passed Holly and then he passed Christine.  I was still in last place but gaining on Holly.

As soon as I saw the finish line, I put it in high gear and passed Holly. 🙂

vdd5k

I should mention a few other things about my race.  My shoe was untied most of it.  But I didn’t want to stop and lose time. So I just ran making sure the whole time that I didn’t trip.  I was glad that I didn’t wear my jacket, I wasn’t cold (until I finished.) I felt nauseous and out of breath the second half of the race.  In fact, I felt like throwing up approaching the finish line. (As soon as I finished, I felt fine).

I’d be lying if PR thoughts didn’t enter my head.  This was my last real chance this year.  But it wasn’t meant to be.

I grabbed the jacket that I had left on the table and went to find food – there were  cookies, bagels, fruit and chocolate milk and I enjoyed all of it (but craved something WARM.)

Then I found Christine and Holly and we hung out waiting for the raffle prizes and the awards. I wished that I had pants, a warmer coat and gloves.  I was freezing!!!

I didn’t win any raffle prizes but I did win first place in my age group. I told Holly that if I had tried to keep up with in the early miles, I would have crashed and burned.  Someday I will PR…. (under 27:11)

vdd

The top three won beer glasses but only the first place winner also got a $10 gift card to Fleet Feet. I hope Holly is still my friend. LOL.

So I ran my second 5k in one week.  (Yes, I am supposedly training for a 15k this Sunday and a half marathon on Dec. 3 …)

Splits:

mile 1: 9:01
mile 2: 9:12
mile 3: 9:05
      .1:  6:50

Garmin time: 27:43
Gun time: 27:51 (Holly & I both thought we crossed at 27:4x)

I plan to rest up until Sunday when I run the Stockade-athon 15K.

Happy Running!  Anyone run or race on Veteran’s Day?

Dash to the Finish Line 5K Race Recap & TOLT

I witnessed the end of this race on a trip to NYC in 2013.

DSC04234

near the marathon finish line (2013)

That day, I knew that I wanted to run this race. It didn’t work out in 2014 but last year I signed up and ran the race by myself.

dttf1

finished in 28:59.

I had so much fun that I decided to do it again.

I had reserved a room for the night before the race in an AirBnB apartment. However, that was before my friend, Anna from Moscow, decided to come and run and she invited her two Russian friends (Julia living in Chicago & Tatiana in DC) to also run the race.  So I cancelled my AirbnB reservation and decided to stay in Anna’s hotel and room with Julia.

Image result for hotel Boutique lexington ave nyc

Once everyone arrived (except Julia), we headed to the Javitz Center where the NYC Marathon expo was being held.

Of course, it was huge and crowded. Most people who were there were running the Marathon. We picked up our race packets for the 5k and walked around checking out the booths. Though tempted, I didn’t buy a thing. Then we went out for a late dinner in Chelsea.

After a sleepless night, I made my usual oatmeal & tea breakfast in the room and we walked to the start line.  The benefit of this hotel was that it was about 5 minutes away.

image

the start line in front of the UN

It was chilly to start which made it tricky to decide what to wear.  I am a firm believer in layers.  However, the problem would be that at this point-to-point race, I wouldn’t have access to a jacket after the race.

We got there early enough and wandered around taking photos.

The corrals were lettered A-Z depending your pace. I was in G last year but for some strange reason, this year I was in I. The Russian girls were in J. Judy was in K.

no, we didn’t plan to wear the same outfits….

I texted Judy and we were able to meet up briefly near Corral G before heading to our respective corrals. Since we are both Skirt Sports ambassadors, we knew it was bound to happen that we wore the same thing. 🙂

Soon, it was time to get ready to run the race. I took off my throw away shirt, tied my jacket around my waist (for later).  I decided not to walk back to corral I but stayed in G.  There were many runners from various corrals there anyway.

everyone was in such a great mood!

There were almost 11,000 runners from 130 countries. The energy was so contagious. Some runners were there to have fun and dressed up in costume. Others were warming up for the marathon the next day and there were also runners like me who couldn’t run 26.2 miles so ran 3.1 instead.

Finally it was time to start but of course, it took a while for me to cross the start line. It was slow going at first but I just tried to enjoy the experience and pick up some speed at the same time. I knew I would slow down when I met the hills of Central Park.

This was the course:

Mile 1: We started at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza on 47th Street between First and Second avenues and headed south. Then we turned right on 42nd Street and headed west. We passed Grand Central Station, the Chrysler Building, Bryant Park. Next we turned right onto Sixth Avenue.

Mile 2: We proceeded up Sixth Avenue toward Central Park. We passed Radio City, the Plaza hotel and lots of screaming spectators and then turned right on Central Park South/59th Street. Finally we turned left into Central Park at Grand Army Plaza.

dttfl16-1

Mile 3: We entered the park, then turned left onto West Drive. We ran those rolling hills and curved around the bottom of the park eventually finishing at the NYC Marathon finish line, on West Drive at 67th Street.

I felt perfectly dressed, even a little warm at times. It was close to 50 degrees at the start and by the end of the day, it was in the 60s (much warmer than predicted.) At the water stop (which I didn’t stop at), there was a wall of people just stopped but I just smiled and weaved around them. The hills in Central Park slowed me down a little but I didn’t walk and they weren’t as bad as I had remembered. I was thrilled to see the finish line but I just couldn’t muster up a real sprint.  There were so many people in MY WAY!

dttfl16-2

I couldn’t tell by the clock at the finish line but I checked my watch and I did finish in less than 29 minutes!! I was surprised.

I had fun running this race as I did last year. I never looked at my Garmin and really didn’t care about time (plus because of the tall buildings, you lose the signal so the pace isn’t accurate anyway). I knew that my first mile was slow because you just couldn’t start running for a while. Even after that, I had to weave through the crowds throughout the WHOLE race. The race seemed so much more crowded that last year.  Runners were taking pics and selfies.  Many times they just stopped dead to take a pic. It was frustrating.  I am glad that I was just running this race for fun and not trying for a PR.

Happy to be done!

Once you crossed the finish line, they handed you a bag of food and ushered you along. I decided to ignore the volunteers & police and stay put on the side by the medical tent.  I wanted to see Judy finish (but I did not).  I did bump into another Skirt Sports ambassador — from my area no less.

shocked to see Elenora!!

And I did catch my Russian friends as they crossed the finish line together.

capture

of course, the first thing you do after to cross the finish line is check your phone.

It was so much fun to run with these first time NYC racers!!

0013

For a race this big, I thought that it was very organized.  We all agreed that it was so much fun!

my yogi friends

I am glad I could share their first NYC race experience

I was never able to run fast during the race (due to the hoards of runners in my way) and when I finished, I didn’t feel like I had run a race. I didn’t even break a sweat.  (I see a re-do in my future.)

Splits: (though I doubt any are accurate.)

2015 / 2016

mile 1 – 9:41 / 9:52
mile 2 – 8:23 / 8:59
mile 3 – 9:15 / 9:12
.14 – 9:05 / 8:23

28:59 / 28:56 (chip time)

3 second course PR!!!

I was also surprised that I was 5th (out 189) in my AG.

awards

After the race, we all headed over Columbus Circle where I had made reservations for brunch in a French restaurant.

celebrating…mimosas at 10 am?  why not?

Still on a race high, the girls went shopping, but I decided to remain in the park and run/walk (more walk than run).  The weather was great and I thoroughly enjoyed being outdoors.

Eventually I had to leave and walk (miles) back to the hotel to change and get ready for my blogger meet-up, dinner and Broadway show.

It was great to meet Karen and her husband and to wish her luck on her marathon the next day.

A full and exciting day!!!

Julia left early the next morning and Tatiana slept in. So Anna and I went running alone.  I wanted to run in Riverside Park and on the Hudson River Greenway.  So we took the subway there and ran 3 miles along the river.  It was so much fun.  Actually even more enjoyable than the race.

Then we decided to spectate at the NYC Marathon.  We couldn’t stay long because we had to meet Tatiana for lunch and I had to catch the train home.  But we did see the cyclists and the female winner. The excitement in air was incredible.  I wished I could have stayed longer to catch some of my friends who were running in the race.

Originally, I wasn’t very excited about returning to NYC again but I am glad I did go.  I had a great time.  The Russian girls are already planning another race weekend together … the BAA 5k in Boston on April 15, 2017.

Since it is Thursday,  I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

thinking out loud

Here’s what I’m thinking about today:

  • How the f#### did Trump win the election!? It’s gonna be a long 4 years!
  • Why did I sign up for a race tomorrow?  It would be nice to sleep in on my day off.
  • I wish that I felt more prepared to run a 15k race on Sunday. Lately I’ve only been running 3 miles. Never got my long run in last weekend.
  • If only I could drag myself out of bed at 5 am and run before work. It’s hard to find lit up places to run after work. I’m getting a little bored of UAlbany campus.

Happy Running! Did you run or race this past weekend? Ever race in NYC? Do you run in the morning or evening?

Monday Running Update

ru

Last Week:

  • Monday – I was planning to go to my Troy Turkey Trot training group run after work but I bailed.  It was cold. I was tired and no one was home to hand out Halloween candy, etc.  In others words, I wimped out.
  • Tuesday –  I felt guilty that I didn’t run yesterday so I ran before tennis. (I had burn off the calories that I would consume at dinner after tennis.)

  • Wednesday – I was scheduled to meet Alyssa at UAlbany for 2 loops of the campus before running with the STEM group. But her son was sick so I was solo.  The first loop was slooow.  Then the 2nd loop was sloooower but I perked up running with the STEM ladies (I guess I need company) and I celebrated by meeting a friend out for wine & appetizers.

It was in the 60s and I ran in a tee shirt …in November!!

  • Thursday – A rainy day and I had a hair appt.  So an unscheduled rest day. (There are few things more important than running and hair color is one of them. LOL)
img_2878

what a dreary day!

  • Friday – Hopped the train to NYC and met up with my Russian friend Anna. I stayed overnight and shared a room with Anna’s friend. No time for a run today either.
Image result for hotel Boutique lexington ave nyc

conveniently located not far from the start of the 5k the next day

  • Saturday – Dash to the Finish Line 5K race. I ran 3.1 miles from the UN to the NYC Marathon finish line (with over 10,000 other runners) including Anna, her 2 Russian friends and Judy.

No, Judy & I didn’t plan our matching outfits. The race was so crowded that I am proud of my 28:56 finish. Actually had even more fun after the race with my Russian friends.

The park was beautiful. Met Judy & Karen and saw Paramour- Cirque du Soleil

We celebrated with brunch and mimosas. Then I continued to run/walk in the park followed by dinner and a show with the girls.

  • Sunday – Still in NYC. Anna and I started the day with a run along the Hudson. Then we went to Central Park to watch the early marathon finishers.

Riverside Park and running along the river was awesome

After lunch, I headed to train station to go home.

18 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday – Troy Turkey Trot Training group run (3-4 miles)
  • Tuesday – rest, tennis
  • Wednesday3 mile runSTEM run
  • Thursday – rest, mall walk with BFF
  • Friday  – day off – 5k race
  • Saturday – rest
  • Sunday – 15k race

Monday Running Update

Last Week:

  • Monday – I took the train to NYC (I had to go there for work), ditched my luggage at my hotel and took off for a walk, some ice cream and a run.  My hotel was a mile from the Hudson so I decided to run in that direction. It’s quite a challenge running on the crowded sidewalks and stopping at every corner.

Walking around Madison Square Park

img_2686

Running on the Hudson River Greenway & then the High Line

View from my hotel window

  • Tuesday – I walked to and from the training that I would be watching all week. After the training, I changed into my running clothes and got in a run before it got dark. Then I went out to dinner (at a Greek restaurant) with 2 co-workers and to a costume exhibit at FIT.

Morning view from my hotel room

Lunch time walk and view of the East river.

  • Wednesday – More  of the same. A short walk at lunch and then a run after work. Today I decided to run to Battery Park (and it was much farther than I thought. ) I took a ride on the sea glass carousel and then took the subway back to the hotel.

  • Thursday – A rainy day. A short lunch walk in the rain but NO after  work run.  Instead I walked in the pouring rain to Times Square, got cheap tix to a show, had dinner, saw the show and walked back to the hotel in the rain. Lots of steps.

Saw The Humans

  • Friday – My last work day in the city. I changed into my running clothes and ran along the East River during lunch. Cool and windy but so needed.

  • Saturday –  I had a planned day at Ellms Family Farms with my mentee and her two sons. Not the best weather. Cold damp windy. I guess it was a rest day but running after 2 young kids all day was fun but not restful.

  • Sunday – It was an exhausting week.  I was tired so I decided not to run a race.  I know “Shocking.” Instead I decided to do a Long Run. Again a sunny day would have been nice but the temps were perfect. Unfortunately I was overdressed and underfueled but I chose my favorite location and got it done..

Scenes from the Zim Smith Trail and Round Lake

It was a struggle but some runs are like that.

I was starved. I ate this after chicken dumpling soup.  The sticky bun at Leah’s didn’t disappoint.

25 miles done with 5 runs and 2 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday – Troy Turkey Trot Training group run (3-4 miles)
  • Tuesday – tennis
  • Wednesday – run + STEM (8 miles)
  • Thursday – hair appt
  • Friday – train to NYC
  • Saturday – 5K race (in NYC) + more miles?
  • Sunday – rest or a long run

Belated Runfessions – October

It’s that time again.  Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

Sorry I’m a little late on this one…

I runfess…

I was in NYC for work for 5 days this past week.  I didn’t bring my laptop but I did have my iPad.  So I could have.  But I didn’t feel like blogging. So I skipped WW, TOLT and Friday Five. Just needed a breather. Ever feel blogged out?

I runfess…

Though I was in NYC for work, my mind was fixated on “Where and when can I run today?

It’s not easy in a strange city when you have little free time.

img_2771

sometimes you just have to miss lunch

I had hoped to do the following:

  • run along the Hudson River
  • run along the East River
  • run to Battery Park
  • run in Central Park

I did accomplish the first three.

I runfess…

I ran four races this month.  Remember I suffer from the FOMO disease.

img_2617

even raced in these horrible conditions

I almost ran one this weekend too. But I felt guilty neglecting my mentee and her kids so I spent time with them on Saturday.  I just wish my running friends would not post pix from their races on FB when I don’t run.  LOL.

I runfess…

I choose my long run locations based on the post run fueling options.  Don’t you?

img_2847

chocolate milk and a sticky bun

I runfess…

I signed up for 6 races in November!! Yes, six!  a 10k, a 15k, and 4 5ks. At least none of them is a half marathon.  This just means that my long runs may be non-existent.

ttt2

the Troy turkey trot 10k is one of my favorites

I runfess…

I have a 5k in NYC this Saturday. The logistics for the weekend will be crazy – getting there, checking into my airbnb apt, meeting my friend from Russia, getting my bib, getting to the race, planning a blogger meet-up, getting my luggage, getting home, etc.  There’s a 5k somewhere in the mix. I haven’t given the race a second thought.  It’s just for fun.  I would love to spectate the NYC marathon on Sunday but I don’t have a place to stay Saturday night.  (Any offers?)

Monday Running Update

ru

Last Week:

  • Monday – The weather really warmed up. It felt like summer not fall.

Usual lunch walk

I returned to the Troy Turkey Training group after a week off.

The hills made this workout tough but I know that these speed drills are important.

  • Tuesday – It was even warmer today – a record high 85 degrees. I had to spend the day inside observing a training.

My view for 7 hours

At least I got in a walk at lunch.

I also played tennis that evening and went out to dinner after, as usual (shared a pizza).

  • Wednesday – We were still enjoying our abnormally warm weather. I was alone today for my run.  Alyssa and Natalie were unavailable and Barbara ran in the am. So I dragged myself through two laps of the campus or 6 miles before my STEM volunteer run. Since I would be busy on the weekend and next week, this could count as my long run.

  • Thursday – A rainy day. No lunch walk. But miraculously the rain stopped and I was able to run with Alyssa.

Alyssa is that little orange dot. She continued for another UAlbany loop.

Unfortunately I have lost one of my running partners. Barbara fell and chipped a bone in her ankle and is out for 6 weeks. 😦

  • Friday – A well earned rest day. At least today I remember to bring an umbrella so I could take a walk at lunch.

I even skipped mah jongg to stay home and pack and relax.

  • Saturday – Today I had a planned day at Ellms Family Farms with my mentee and her two sons.  But the weather did not cooperate.  We postponed it until next Saturday.  Instead I went to the movies with friends. This is one of my all time favorite books and I was very excited when they made it into a movie.

Loved it!!!

Then after the movie, I had to rush off to run a 5K race. (Luckily I picked up my bib earlier in the day since it was at a different place than the race.) I came sooo close to bailing on this race.  38 degrees. Windy. Pouring rain. But I ran it. And it was not fun!!

At least I won my age group. $25 LL Bean gift card

  • Sunday – Definitely a busy day.  I took the train with my 9 tennis friends to NYC.  We separated because I was having lunch with college friends, the ones whom I spent my junior year in France with. We have reunions every few years to reminisce.

Image result for cafe un deux trois nyc

Where else would a bunch of French majors have brunch?

Then I met my tennis friends because we had tickets to a Broadway show.

Image result for waitress show

It was terrific!

2 people missing from the top pic and one on the bottom – ❤ my friends

17.5 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday – travel to NYC for work, squeeze in a run after arriving
  • Tuesday – NYC for work, squeeze in a run after work??
  • Wednesday – NYC for work, squeeze in a run after work?? or maybe a show??
  • Thursday – NYC for work, squeeze in a run after work??
  • Friday – NYC for work, travel home
  • Saturday – day at Ellms Family Farms with mentee
  • Sunday 9 mile run

LL Bean Bright Night 5K Recap

Image result for LL Bean 5k albany

Saturday, October 22, 2016 5 pm in the Crossings

Why in the world did I sign up for this race??

I would be away in NYC Sunday and then Monday-Friday.

But if you read my TOLT post, you know that I suffer from FOMO.

I have run this course several times.  And I have never had a good finish time.  Not sure why.  So I was perfectly happy to run a night race having it be “purely for fun.”

Image result for LL Bean 5k albany

course map

Here’s what the first annual race advertised:

This course is run through the Crossings of Colonie Park.  Finish with piles of glowing jack O lanterns “cheering” you on!

Race Shirts
Everyone who registers for the race will receive a Unisex Brooks Podium T-shirt in the bright Nightlife color. Shirts will be distributed by sizes on a first-come-first-served basis at packet pick up.
Water Bottles
All participants will receive a free reusable water bottle, courtesy of our sponsor Camel Bak.
LED Shoe Light
All participants will receive a free Shoe Lit from Nite Ize. These cool LED lights clip onto the laces of your running shoes
Awards
FitBit fitness trackers will be given as awards to the top three male and top three female overall finishers, as well as the top finisher in each age group: 0-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+.  Awards will not be mailed.  You must be present to receive them.
Pretty neat swag.  And for this reason, the race sold out right away at 300.

I was supposed to spend the day with my mentee and her kids at Ellms Family Farms but the weather was too lousy – cold, rainy and windy.  Instead I went to the movies with friends.

Image result for a man called ove

loved the book and the movie did the book justice.

So who would want to run a night race in these weather conditions?

Not me!

But I did sign up.

So I went to the LL Bean store at the mall at noon to pick up my race packet so I didn’t have to rush in the evening.  The race took place at the park about 10 minutes away. I got my short sleeved tech shirt and water bottle.  They didn’t have any LED shoe lights.  (Would have preferred these to the water bottle that I have dozens of.)
img_2483
It was tough deciding what to wear. I mean it was in the 80s just a few days ago.  But for this nasty weather and for an evening race, I decided on tights under a skirt, several layers, a jacket, gloves and hat. I had to locate my winter running clothes.  UGH!
I wore them to the movie theater and then after the movie, I drove to the race start to find a decent parking spot.
I should mention again that the weather was horrendous.  I kept hoping that the rain would let up but no such luck.  I sat in my car in the parking lot, debating whether I should run the race or go home.
img_2479
To make things worse, the temperature kept dropping and it was getting windier. But I decided to be tough and run the race.
I stayed in the car until the very last minute and ran to the start line (ditching my rain poncho in the pavilion.)  I recognized a few runners.  Out the 300 who had signed up, less than half came. (The smart one stayed in their warm dry homes.)
Well, this won’t be a very exciting recap.
I didn’t warm up so my legs were stiff at first.  I felt like I was running fast but I was not.  The wind was tough and the rain came down harder and harder as the race went on.  It was very wet.  You had to run around big puddles and be careful that you didn’t slip on the wet leaves. And even with gloves, my hands were numb.
The Crossings is hilly too.  I keep forgetting. The worse part was that it was hard to breathe. I wasn’t running fast and I was out of breath the whole race. Others complained about the same thing.  It must have been the cold.
At least the miles went by quickly.  I am so glad that it was only a 5k.  When I saw the finish line, I ran as fast as I could.  I just wanted to get warm and dry as soon as possible.
img_2482

those are pumpkins cheering on the finishers

img_2480
I don’t think anyone cared but there was NO food after the race.  Just some cups of water.  You got your results texted to you and were able to get your award quickly if you won.
img_2484
They gave out $25 gift cards to L.L. Bean to first place in each 10-year age group.  (They had advertised that you got a FitBit.) And I won!!  (I didn’t need a FitBit anyway.)
I got my award and then I grabbed my poncho and headed home to my fireplace and some HOT soup.

mile 1: 9:21
mile 2: 9:21

Can I say that I am glad that I ran this race and that I had fun?  Absolutely not!  (Maybe it’s because I am still thawing out LOL)

TOLT: FOMO or YOLO?

thinking out loud

Since it is Thursday,  I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

Here’s what I’m thinking about today:

Image result for FOMO

This how the dictionary defines FOMO:

anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may currently be happening elsewhere, often aroused by posts seen on a social media website.

Substitute race for event and I think I have this disease.

Think?

Yeah, I’ve got it.

I ran 40 races last year and I’m on track to do the same this year.

I mentioned to my coach on Monday that I needed a support group for this addiction.  And he replied that I had one and the problem is that they encourage it.

The other runners at races or the people that I run with are my “support group.”

Here’s how the conversation goes:

  • What are you doing next weekend?

  • Nothing.  I need to do a long run.

  • I’m running X race.  I ran it last year and it was awesome.

  • I don’t know… I am training for a half. I shouldn’t run it.

  • Come on. Do it! They have great post race refreshments and I bet you win an age group award.

  • Well, maybe…

  • X, Y, Z are also running it.  It’ll be fun.

  • Oh, ok. I’ll sign up when I get home.

Guess what I am doing this Saturday?

5 pm at the Crossings in Albany

Do I want to cure this disease? Do I need to?

Not sure.

Right now, I am focusing on YOLO. It’s more fun.

So while I am healthy, I’m going to do whatever I can to live life to the fullest.  Even if it means giving into FOMO and racing every weekend.

Happy Running! Do you suffer from running FOMO?

Apple Run 5K Race Recap & TOTR

apple5k

I ran this race in 2014 because 2 ladies whom I met at a previous race raved about it. Now it’s become one of my favorite races.

It didn’t hurt that in 2014, I finished this race in 27:47 and won 1st in my age group and in 2015, I finished in 28:01 and won 2nd.

That being said, on a weekend where there was good number of local races (including the Susan Komen Race for the Cure), I chose to drive 45 minutes to run this race.

According to the website, it is a looped, flat course. Even though I ran it twice already, I didn’t remember much about the course. I run so many races, they all blend together sometimes.

Apparently we quickly switched from summer to fall in a few days. But at least the predicted rain did not come. It was when I left the house pretty chilly and damp.

I am the crazy person who refuses to wear capris or tights before Thanksgiving. But I decided for some strange reason to change from my tank to a long sleeved shirt today (Big mistake!!)

I arrived about 30 minutes before the start of the race which starts and ends at the middle school in Burnt Hills.

sporting my Skirt Sports running attire, of course

You’ll notice in the above picture that I have my Garmin on my right wrist and that’s my new Apple Watch on the other wrist. I usually have my Garmin on the left wrist but I switched them.  I planned to use the Garmin for the race since I hadn’t tried the GPS functionality of the watch yet and then later try out the Apple watch.

In the gym, I picked up my race packet and was surprised that they had chips for your shoe. I almost forgot to get one.  It’s been awhile since I have had to use one.

I bumped into the 2 older ladies that I see at most races that I run.  We chatted for awhile before the race.

Then I saw Tom, the crazy guy that I see at most of my races. We posed for pics.

Finally I spotted Sue who had recommended this race. (Her Connecticut friend Ilsa couldn’t come.) We started together and she’s my competition (but she hasn’t been racing much.)

Soon it was time to head outside.  It was then, looking at what other (serious) runners were wearing that I realized that the shirt I had on might have been the wrong choice.

Tom was running with this charity group

I lined up in front because there were so many kids running this race (The whole girls hockey team and cross country team, I think). Then Sue shouted out to me and we started talking.  She was back a ways and then all of a sudden, the race started.  With no chip timing, this was Race Fail #1.

Runners head up Lake Hill Road for the 22nd Annual ...

photo from the Gazette

I started to make up for my slow start but with all those kids in the way, it was impossible. I also noticed up ahead was my age group competition.  She beat me last year but she is super fast and was slowly disappearing from my view.

So I just decided to enjoy the race.  Then I noticed that my Garmin was still on 0.  I must have pushed the wrong button.  It was confusing wearing it on the other wrist.  So I started it about 1/2 mile late.  Race Fail #2.

As a result, my Garmin was pretty useless and I didn’t look at it for the whole race.

I love the course although it does feel like you’re running on a slight uphill the whole time. There are only 2 short downhills and they’re during the last mile.

The race course is a loop first through country roads and then around a residential neighborhood and then back along a different country road.

There was someone calling out times at mile 1 which for me was between 8:55 and 9.  At least that was better than last week.  At the halfway point, there was a water stop but I chose not to stop.

That’s when I decided to see what would happen if I ran the whole race without stopping to walk.  I can’t remember the last time I did that…it’s been years.

Though the temp was in the 5o’s, it was humid. It had rained all night  and looked like it may start again.  I was getting increasing warmer and warmer.  I regretted not wearing a tank.  I was sweating and very uncomfortable.  Race Fail #3.

Finally, I came to home stretch. When I saw the clock, I wasn’t surprised that I wasn’t close to a PR but I did want to finish under 28 minutes. I ran as fast as I could and crossed at 27:48.

I was happy.  Not as fast as my first Apple Run but faster than last year.

I waited for Susan to finish. She hadn’t run a race since this race last year so she did great.

img_2219

Then I had to wait a while for Tom to cross with his group.

img_2220

the race raised $2000 to buy 2 more wheelchairs like Seamus’ here

Inside there were pizza, bagels, fruit, etc.  I had 2 pieces of pizza and a bagel and waited with my friends for the awards.

The results were the same as last year.  I was 2nd and Sue third.

img_2222

As always, I enjoyed this race and plan to run this one again next year.

My splits for 2.94 mi

mile 1 – 9:05
mile 2 – 8:49
mile 3 – 8:42
              26:07

Could that be negative splits?  How did that happen?   Without walking, I really felt that I was running so much slower each mile.  Without a watch, I had no idea of my pace.

My running, however, was not over for the day. 10 miles was on the schedule in preparation for next Sunday’s half marathon.  So I drove to the Zim Smith Bike Path.  It has become one of my favorite running routes.

Unfortunately, I had to run in my sweaty shirt. I was chilled at first but then warmed up.

Processed with Snapseed.

the leaves are beginning to drop and turn orange. this will be a pretty trail in a few weeks

My legs were definitely tired.  This always happens when I run a race for my first few miles of a long run. But I was excited to try out my new Apple Watch.

I set the Activity App for 7 miles and ran to the end of the trail and then turned around.

I didn’t have the watch do anything fancy.  I’m not sure yet if it can but it shows your heart rate, distance, current pace and average pace which is all I need.  I have never used intervals even on my Garmin.

img_2229

I was walking at this point

It was a nice run.  Lots of of running and walking when I felt like it. Nothing to write home about.  My pace was very slow but I’m fine with it.   All I cared about was that my last long run was DONE!!

img_2234

Hip Hip Hooray

The best part was that I parked my car at Leah’s Cakery.  I planned to have lunch there as a reward for having completed 10 miles!

The food there is great and the people who run the restaurant are so nice.

img_2260

I had a portobello mushroom, tomato, cheese sandwich with the best chocolate milk ever!

img_2261

You didn’t think I’d skip dessert, did you? It was a tough decision but I chose the cranberry apple pie.

Back to my Apple Watch, I am pleased so far. It syncs with my iphone and gives you stats on your run.

img_2258

I delete my info right away and I probably wouldn’t even ever look.  I am only interested in my pace when I am running a race.

Since today is Tuesday, I’m also linking up with Erika @ MCM Mama Runs, Marcia @ Marcia’s Healthy Slice and Patty @ My no-guilt life for

This week’s topic is Bucket list race: Where do you dream about running?

So we have the unrealistic bucket list race:

Running in France (remember I used to be a French teacher)

either in Paris:

or the south of France:

For both I would need more $$$ and more time off.

Then we have the realistic bucket list race:

Running in NYC (my second favorite city after Paris)

either the NYC Half Marathon

Image result for NYC Half

or the Brooklyn Half Marathon

Both are lotteries so I can hope…

I have a few more on my list:

Happy Running! Which race(s) are on your bucket list?

Monday Running Update

ru

Last Week:

  • Monday – Tonight was our second Troy Turkey Trot Training group run. Again my legs were tired from the running that I did on Sunday. When this happens, I can’t take full advantage of the training group drills. But I did my best but it was tough.  Thankfully, it got dark before we could run another hilly loop.

  • Tuesday – Just work with a short walk at lunch and tennis in the evening. We went out to dinner after and I shared a pizza. No dessert!
  • Wednesday – I met up with Alyssa for a run before my STEM volunteering. The weather was perfect.  I am still dragging.  Luckily, Alyssa continued on her own for another loop and my STEM group is doing the Couch to 5k walk/run.

Afterward I met my BFF for some steps in the mall.

  • Thursday – My hair appointment interfered with my planned run.  (Hair color is important!!)  Afterward I wanted to squeeze in a short run before it got dark but it was my MIL’s 91st birthday and I had to stop by for dinner & cake.  (Another skipped run! Grrrr!)

ziti, meatballs, lasagna, rum cake – Oh my!

It was nice having all the family together – my MIL, BIL & his son, SIL, 2 stepsons & their girlfriends & my hubby (In the picture above are my MIL, nephew, BIL, sons’ girlfriends)

  • Friday – Rest day but at least I walked at lunch. In the evening,  I had my weekly mah jongg game (at my house)
  • Saturday –  I ran a 5K race.  No PR but 2nd in my AG.  This is one of my favorite 5ks.

img_2263

Afterward, I ran almost 7 more miles.  I drove to the Zim Trail which has become my favorite place to do a long run (Could it be Leah’s cakery?)

img_2266

  • Sunday – I thought we’d go boating today but the weather was iffy so my hubby signed up for two tennis tournaments. I did lots of cleaning up around the house and went for a walk in the mall. (There may have been some retail therapy involved too.)

18 miles done with 3 runs and 4 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday Turkey Trot Training group run (3 miles)
  • Tuesday – rest, tennis
  • Wednesday4 mile run with friends+ volunteering with STEM group
  • Thursday – 4 mile run, dinner out some former co-workers
  • Friday – rest, mah jongg
  • Saturday – rest, boating ??
  • Sunday Ramblefest Half Marathon!!
