Cherry Blossom 5K Race Recap & TOLT

May 1, 2016 10:15 am

This was the third year that I have run this race.  I really like it plus I have come in 2nd in my age group each year.

2014 – 27:51

image

2015 – 27:56

The course is very winding.  Someone last year said that there were 20 turns. But it is also pretty flat except for the last mile which is uphill.

As you can see, my times in this race have been pretty speedy (at least speedy for me!!). Could I beat that??

And should I try?  After all, I just ran a 10K the day before and a half marathon the week before.

Nevertheless, I was determined to give it my best shot and not to be disappointed if I sucked.

I woke today with a sore throat. (That usually means that I am coming down with a cold…no!! No time for this!!)

And it was RAINING!!!

I really felt like staying in bed.

But I didn’t.  I planned on a similar outfit to one that I wore at my race the day before but decided to add a long-sleeved shirt and capris (since there would be NO sunshine to warm things up.)

img_9398

wearing last year’s race shirt (which I love)

The race started at 10:15 and I got there around 9:15 and parked a few blocks away on the street. It was pretty crowded even in this inclement weather (about 400 racers and many walkers.) I stayed in my  car until about 9:45.  It was drizzling then raining and then drizzling.

Again I bumped in many people that I knew: Jan and her friends and some from “Team BadAss.” I was chilly so decided to wear a windbreaker (in case it started to pour.)

13123099_10153545040701074_3261799202596760757_o

Unfortunately at this Cherry Blossom race each year, there are never any cherry blossoms.  (Maybe next year!) There is also usually a Cherry Blossom Festival, as well.  I didn’t even check it out this year.

2015 but similar to this year

I wound up starting with Team BadAss and Benita Zahn (a local TV reporter.).  We moved toward the front but not too close since it was chip-timed.

a dreary wet day

I usually have a pretty fast first 2 miles and then slow down but I was tired even during the first mile. (Yup, those 6.2 miles from the day before were having an effect.)

img_9402

two members of Team BadAss

It was a pretty interesting course – you just wind your way around the neighborhoods.  I tried to run the tangents as much as possible.

I stopped to walk and catch my breath at the water stop (around mile 1.5) even though I wasn’t thirsty and then tried to run non-stop to the finish.

Nope, I had to walk again and again!!  The third mile was uphill… Boo!!

Plus, my windbreaker was suffocating me. It was warmer and more humid that I thought. I wanted to take it off but it was too complicated with my watch and my race belt.  So I just unzipped it.

Finally I saw the finish line.  I should have been looking at my watch.  They had been calling out times at each mile but they seemed to be off.  So I was surprised that it was already over 28 minutes.

I sprinted and Team BadAss cheered me on (they are all much speedier than me) and I crossed at 28:24. (chip time)

cb

I was slower than my last two times on this course and it was slowest 5k of the year 😦

At least the refreshments were decent  – fruit, yogurt, granola, bagels, cupcakes and chocolate milk.

image

I had 2 milks and 2 cupcakes 🙂

I hung out with Team BadAss to see if we won any awards.

cb5k16

Nope! No award this year! I came in 5th.

Sherry came in 2nd in her age group and Pam got a PR!!

As I remarked in my 10K race recap from the previous day, I cannot expect to win an age group award.  Especially if I am not prepared to run my best.

I ran the best race I could given the circumstances.  For that, I am happy. And I am NOT injured.  No aches or pains!!!! End of my whining!!

Race Splits:

mile 1- 8:58
mile 2 – 9:16
mile 3 – 9:13
.14 – 7:30

Plus I ran with friends and got chocolate milk!

And no, I didn’t run more miles after the race. (If it were sunny, you know I would have been tempted.)

Instead I drove home to cooking, laundry and cleaning.

Since it is Thursday,  I’m also linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

thinking out loud

So in addition to last weekend’s race, this is what I am thinking about:

Upcoming Races –

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I signed up for two races again this coming weekend.

This one is on Saturday.  I signed up for the 15K even though I know it is very hilly. Last year, I ran the 5k (and fell.)

Mastodon Challenge 5K

I thought of changing to the 5k but after yesterday’s GOTR Practice 5k, I decided to stay with the 15k.

img_9438

finishing 12 laps around the school

On Tuesday, I ran a practice 5K race with my running buddy. She is so cute and it was so much fun.  Of course, she ran the first 4 laps as fast as she could and then, thank God, she ran out of steam.  We had to take walk breaks during the remaining 8 laps.

So on Sunday, I will be running a 5K with her.

md5k16

Last year, my GOTR girl was a runner and she had run 5ks before so I needed to be on my game.  This year, I am sure we will be running just for fun.

post-race 2015

My Birthday

It’s on Monday, May 9.  It always get mixed in with the annual Tulip Fest and Mother’s Day.

I plan to go to the Tulip Fest with Amanda and her kids after my Saturday 15k.

IMG_5721

Then on Sunday, we’ll go out to lunch or dinner to celebrate Mother’s Day with my stepsons, MIL and SIL.

I am going out to a movie & dinner tonight with my BFF to celebrate and maybe a celebration at mah jongg??

IMG_5686

Usually I go out on my birthday with a former co-worker but she is in France.

IMG_5644

So on my birthday,  I could go to my running group instead and then next weekend go out for a special dinner with the hubby. We’ll see…

Upcoming Vacation –

12th trip to Naples, Florida  + 1 Palm Springs, 5 Las Vegas, 1 Dominican Republic, 1 Delray Beach = tennis vacation #20 for me!!! (We started traveling together in 2002 and only 2 of us haven’t missed one.)

11270392_654391348028491_7891947832278018232_o

I leave on May 18 and return on May 25 (4 days before my next half marathon).  Can’t wait!!

Happy Running! How was your weekend? Any races or runs? Any races coming up?  What are you thinking about today? Please share.

Spring Run Off 10K Race Report & Being Fearless

sro16

I almost didn’t sign up for this race since I had already signed up for a 5k the next day.  Normally these two races are not on the same weekend.

But I have run this race twice before and I have enjoyed it.

2014 at the 10K

Plus I’ve always won an award.

I am familiar with the course.  It is where I do a lot of my long training runs.

img_9203

running here with Denise a few weeks ago

I tossed around the idea of running the 5k but in the end, I decided to do the 10K (even though it meant that at the race the next day I would not be in top form.) Basically because even if I am NOT doing my long runs, I need to keep my mileage up for my May 29  half marathon – the VCM  Relay.

No goals for the race but since it was my third time, I expected something like the past two years:

2015: 58:19
2014: 1:00:51

My 10K PR is 57:03

The night before the race, there was a free pasta dinner at packet pick up.

img_9395

another unisex tech shirt that it is big!

The food was really good.  It was catered by D’Raymonds, a local Italian restaurant. There was salad, bread, pasta, wine, and lots of homemade desserts. It wasn’t a buffet.  They actually served you. I ate A LOT!!

Two years ago I got invited to sit with two lovely older runners.  We had some great discussions….about running, of course and have seen each other several times since.

pasta dinner before the race above

This year, these ladies couldn’t come so I sat with some runners that I know since we run many of the same races. It was fun.

IMG_0767

img_9370

I may have over indulged

After dinner, I rushed off to play mah jongg (and stayed out later than I should have.)

I was  tired when I got up the next morning (and with an upset stomach) but happy that again I lucked out with the weather – sunny, no wind and cool (40s to start and 50s later). I wore a short-sleeved top, skirt, compression socks and brought a jacket just in case.

img_9375

cloudy & chilly when I first arrived

I arrived early to make sure I got parking and to look for people whom I knew.  I found parking in the closer lot and then walked over to the start.

img_9372

I immediately ran into Lara, a former tennis teammate but now running friend.

img_9376

I decided to run without my jacket and I was so glad that I did

We hung out and chatted. What was great about this race was how many runners were there that I knew.  Some I hadn’t seen since last year.  It was like a reunion.

This race included a 5k and a 10k.  This year for the first time, both races started at the same time.

I started toward the front but not too near the fast runners.

image

the sun came out once the race started but it was breezy near the water

I went out fast of course because I knew that I would slow down – bad attitude, right?

image

The course is lovely. You run along the Hudson River.

But I was already walking through the water stop at 1.25 miles.

This was a sign that the race would be going downhill. I actually felt nauseous the whole race. And my legs were telling me that they were not ready yet for speed.

Nevertheless, I willed myself to keep up an even pace until the turn around of this out and back course. (In fact, I was at 28:xx minutes at the 3.1 mile mark but I knew that I was tired and as usual, would slow down.)

You would think that there would be water then but nope not again until about mile 4.75.  It was warm and I was VERY thirsty. I complained to the volunteers like I did last year.

I wanted to eat some Gu to get more energy around mile 4 but decided against it with no water (plus my stomach was unhappy.)

I got 2 blisters during my half on Sunday.  I thought they were both healed and didn’t put anything on them.  Wrong! One was healed but the one on the bottom of my leg foot started to hurt…with every step.

So I dragged myself/limped to the end (which always seem to have annoying inclines.)

Lara & I run af the same pace.  Sometimes I beat her and sometimes she beats me. She was behind me the whole the race until the last mile.  Then she passed me by.  I tried to catch her to no avail.

As I approached the finish line, I sprinted in hopes of finishing under 59 minutes but did not.

I crossed at 59:11 (gun time).

Race Splits:

mile 1 –  9:02
mile 2-  9:21
mile 3 –  9:31
mile 4 –  9:41

mile 6 –  9:41
.2 –  8:29

59:06 – Garmin Time

I had some refreshments and waited for the results.  Homemade cookies, brownies and cakes – YUM!

img_9381

My inaugural Team Badass photo

I also began to feel better about my race.  My time wasn’t bad.  I beat my time from my last 10K (Troy Turkey Trot) and my legs hadn’t recovered yet from last Sunday’s hilly half.

I cheered on some friends who got age group awards.  This year, I did not!!

sro10k16

some old ladies are still speedy

So I really enjoyed the race.  Although I didn’t expect to PR, I probably thought I would win an age group award.  I need to adjust my expectations.

The weather was so perfect that I hung out with some older ladies for a while and went for a walk. (Especially since rain was in the forecast for the next day.)

img_9382

img_9383

img_9384

I wound up walking 4 more miles.  That was 10 miles for the day so far.  (Probably not too smart with another race scheduled for the next day.)

My legs felt better as the day wore on… I even went grocery shopping and did lots of errands. Also picked up my race packet for the race the next day.

Since it is Wednesday, I am also linking to Deb from Deb Runs‘ Wednesday Word.

Deb Runs

This week’s word is FEARLESS.

Just look at Katherine Switzer – the first woman to run the Boston Marathon (in 1967.)

and Bobbi Gibb who crashed the Boston Marathon in 1966.

What about Harriette Thompson who ran a marathon at age 92?

Now these women are FEARLESS.

Moi?

I try to not let fear get in my way. I am a risk taker, to some degree. (At least with my running.)

  • Run only 5ks and then train for a half marathon?  No problem.
  • Run a 5k as your first run after serious ankle surgery? No problem.
  • Run a race with a foot stress fracture? No problem.
  • Finish a race after breaking your foot? No problem.
  • Race a hilly half marathon without training on hills?  No problem.
  • Run 2 races in one weekend?  No problem.

And yes, I am running 2 races (a 15 and a 5k) again this weekend.
Happy Running!  How was your weekend? Did you run or race? Are you fearless?

Runfessions March

It’s that time again.  Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

I runfess…

I STILL can’t seem to motivate myself to run in the morning before work.  It’s not that I sleep in but I am lazy.  I sit around watching the Today show, eating breakfast and reading email/blogs. Then all of a sudden, it’s time to go to work.

img_9325

When I am busy after work and I need to run, I have to run at lunch.  It’s ok now because it is still cool out.  That will change when it gets warm and I will be too sweaty to go back to work.

How do you early morning runners do it?

I runfess…

Last month, I couldn’t go to yoga or the gym because I had tennis elbow.  Good excuse, right?

Now, my elbow feel fine…but I still haven’t gone… no time, no ambition, too lazy.

I need an intervention!!

I runfess…

I din’t taper for my last half marathon.

I usually run 8 miles the weekend before but I ran 11 miles on Sunday.

11 miles

11 miles

Then I ran 4 miles on Monday, 5 miles on Wednesday, 2 miles on Thursday….

OOPS!

I ran my second fastest half so I guess it was okay and if it weren’t so f##in hilly, I might have PRed.

I runfess…

I also did not recover after my last half marathon.

half recover

My bad!

I ran 3 miles the next day and also on Wed & Thurs.  Plus I have 10k on Saturday and a 5k on Sunday.

img_9351

my legs were TIRED!!

I runfess…

I still have my Starbucks addiction.  I stop on the way to the park. And I walk to the park everyday at lunch.  (Darn, I wish they would close that store!!!)

img_9319

I even walked there in the rain

However, I have discovered their Chocolate Banana Smoothie.  Tell me it’s healthier than a frappuccino!

img_9254

I runfess…

I don’t like hills. I walk rather than run up them.  And I don’t train on hills.

So why do I sign up for hilly races?

mc16

May 8 – HILLY!!!!!

May 29 – Hilly

ccc16

I haven’t signed up yet but I probably will…

Happy Running! Anything to runfess this month?

Every Friday, three DC area bloggers Mar at Mar On the Run, Cynthia at You Signed Up For What?! and Courtney from Eat Pray Run, DC to host the Friday Five linkup.  Anyone can join with their own Friday Five post (yes, it must be a Friday Five!!)  They encourage you to visit other blogs on the linkup, comment, share and engage!

My Friday Five topic is Five Reasons to Love Spring Running.

It’s no secret.  Spring is my favorite season to run.

 1.   More Hours of Daylight

I have a hard time getting out of bed early enough to run before work.  Now, it is still light enough to run after work.  I love it!!

  2.   Less Baggage

I usually run after work so I have to carry all my running gear to work. Now my bag is so much lighter. No gloves, no jackets, no vests, no tights, no extra layers, etc.

TOLT: Lake George Half Marathon Recap

Since it is Thursday,  I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

thinking out loud

Here’s what I’m thinking about today…

My last half marathon!

Here’s how it went down:

April 24, 2016 —   9 am start

Half Marathon Training

Since I ran a half marathon 6 weeks ago, I only needed to run 9, 10, 11, 12, 8 miles and I actually ran 9, 10.5, 11, 12 and 11 so I should have been ready. As you can see below, only one long run was without a long break in the middle.

As I have mentioned many times before, I don’t ever follow a strict training schedule.  I just make sure than I do my long runs on the weekends and run a few times during the week (usually for 3 miles.)

For my last half marathon, I should have trained on hills.  But I didn’t so I suffered the consequences. This time, I did do hill repeats (but only once.)

Plus, I have been racing …a lot.  That counts as speed drills, right?

And of course, I planned my race outfit keeping my fingers crossed that it would be warm enough to wear it.

img_9210

at the last minute, I reversed the top & bottom colors.

I mean we had snow at the beginning of the month so you never know.

Pre-Race Preparations

My 2nd half marathon in 2011 was the Lake George Half Marathon.  It was poorly run by another company that has since gone out of business. This new race is run by 3C Race Productions and has gotten good reviews.  (I ran their Saratoga Half in 2014.)

Plus, the weather in 2011 was horrible – freezing rain and sleet for the whole 13.1 hilly miles.

lg3

Yes, the race is hilly and most likely the same course as the one run by the other company (except that the finish line in 2011 was on Beach Rd not up a hill to the Fort.)

The Half Marathon course starts on Beach Road and heads East on Beach Road past Fort William Henry, around the loop, and back on Beach Road. The course then turns right on Lake Shore Drive (Route 9) and continues all the way to the turnaround point at the Lake George Club in Bolton Landing. The course returns back on Lake Shore Drive to turn left on Beach Road up onto the sidewalk to take the path up to the Finish Line at the Fort William Henry Resort.

I run most of my half marathons alone. Many are destination races too.

But this time, my running friend Barbara signed up for the race too so we decided to drive up together. It was nice to have her company. (We could worry before together and whine after LOL)

Below is a map of the scenic course:

LakeGeorgeHMCourse

Most of the race has views of the lake

More importantly this was the elevation:

uphill, downhill, rolling hills…repeat….NO REST FROM THE HILLS!!

Race Day

I got up early (like 5:30 am) and had my usual race breakfast of cream of wheat and tea. It was nice to sleep in my own bed before a big race (although I really didn’t sleep well…as usual.)

I met Barbara at the Park n Ride at 6:30 am so we could drive together up to Lake George. The ride took about an hour.

img_9260

view from the hotel looking toward the start

I had a hard time deciding what to wear. It was COLD (in the 30s) and breezy. At least it would be sunny and hopefully warm up later on.

In the end, I shed my long-sleeved shirt and wore a tank, my DIY arm sleeves, a windbreaker and gloves.

They had emailed us not to park in the Fort William Henry Resort parking lot and not to use the hotel facilities.  So we drove to the lot below on Beach Rd. No one was parked there so we decided to risk it and park at the hotel. (It worked out fine.)

We got our bibs and a short-sleeved sleeved tech shirt and then went back to the car to stay warm.

img_9261

Finally we went into the hotel and used the restrooms (Rebels we are… not really… lots of racers were in the hotel lobby too.)

There were real bathrooms there which is always nice. And we could wait indoors where it was warm until the race started…

Eventually we had to make our way down the hill to the street in search of the start line.

img_9262

The race was on the small side (maybe 200 runners) and not particularly well organized.  We lined up in the road and the race director yelled go (5 minutes after the race was supposed to start.)

A lot of the race is a blur but here’s how I remember it:

Miles 1-4:

9:27, 9:54, 10:15, 10:13

I lined up pretty close to front.  I wasn’t sure if the race was chip timed or gun timed. Barbara started further back.

We began along the lakefront on Beach Road. From there, we followed a quick loop eastward down into Lake George Beach State Park, and then headed westward again along Beach Road, past the start area, and then turned right to head north onto Canada Street. Once on Canada Street, we followed it for a stretch before turning onto Lake Shore Drive.

13087342_10206689009164962_2465817787027020010_n

around mile 1.5

The only flatish part of the race had ended.  I was happy that I started out slow.

Now the uphill battle began.

We would continue on Route 9N or Lake Shore Drive, all the way up to the turnaround point just past the half-way point.

My hubby and I own a boat and we keep it in Bolton Landing, about 2 miles north of the turn around point.  I have been driving this road for the past 10 years most weekends from May – October.

The hills were no surprise.

I realized quickly that I didn’t need my jacket.  Although it was breezy for the first mile, once we  headed north, we no longer felt the wind.  I tied my jacket around my waist (which annoyed me because it kept moving around). I kept on my DIY arm sleeves until the last few miles.

I made sure that I stopped and walked at every water stop. The first one was around mile 2.  I thought that I would see one in another 2 miles but that wasn’t the case.

The worst part of the race (actually it was almost the whole race) was that you ran with traffic.  That meant you had to run on the very narrow shoulder of the road.  Often, the road was uneven and with holes.  Plus, you had to make sure that cars moved over enough (especially after the last half I ran when someone got hit by a truck). It was very nerve-wracking to say the least.

Barbara who started behind me quickly got ahead of me and stayed that way for the rest of the race.  For awhile, I could see her, but every time I stopped to walk, she got farther ahead. (Her hill training apparently worked!)

Miles 5-8:

9:45, 10:39, 10:41, 11:02

It was unending hill after hill but not as steep as the map shows which means that the steep downhills weren’t there either.  I thought that I may walk up EVERY hill like the last race but the during the first half of the race, I ran/walked up them.  For the most part I was happy with how I was tackling them.

Finally at mile 5.75, there was the second water stop.  I could finally eat a GU.

I spent most of the first half of the race (except for when I was looking down at the uneven pavement and pot holes) admiring the lake and reminiscing about the sites along the lake (such as, the Inn at Erlowest where my hubby & I went for an anniversary dinner, a motel where stayed before we had a boat you could sleep on, a deli where I’ve stopped to buy sandwiches, etc.)

At the halfway point, I was at 1:05 or so…not bad with all those hills. (Unfortunately there would be no PR, I could not hold that pace.)

Then things started going downhill (and I’m not talking about the course.) I started developing a blister on the bottom of the left foot and one on the right side of my right foot. (Even with all those moleskin I put on my feet… grrr).

And my lower back was aching. (I think I was leaning forward running up those hills.)

Finally at mile 7.5 we turned around, had water and started heading back.  Mile 8 was the first mile sign that I saw (I don’t know how I missed the others or were they not there?).

IMG_3550

this is not from the race but from when I’ve run on this same road

Miles 9-13:

11:01, 11:26, 11:13, 10:38

The longest and steepest hill came between miles 8 and 9.  And my body was already done with hills. As you can see from my pace, I was walking more and more.  I took another GU around mile 10 even without a water stop. Finally there was some downhill but too little, too late.

Mile 14:

10:14 (definitely not a sprint to the finish)

13062550_10206689457696175_2378682178298357003_n

Barbara crossing the finish line

Eventually, I took a right and headed up (yes, up) a dirt path, then another sharp right that led to the finish line.  I had zero energy left at this point and was glad to be done.

Garmin time: 2:16:30
Gun Time: 2:16:58
Chip Time: 2:16:56

Barbara was there waiting, as well as, a boating friend of mine.

As soon as you were done, you gave the race director your bib number and he printed out your results and gave you your award if you won one.

img_9272

Yup, I won second in my age group and got a beer glass.

I quickly went back to my car so I could change out of my sweaty clothes.

Then the three of us went out to lunch in town. It was too cold to sit outside but we had a nice view from our table.

Additional race reflections:

The Good:

  • No rain.
  • Perfect running weather – cool, no humidity, little wind.
  • Close enough to be able to sleep in my own bed the night before.
  • Organized packet pick-up
  • Real bathroom
  • Warm place to wait before the race
  • I shared my race experience with a friend
  • Scenic course with lake views
  • No major injuries. (just the usual sore feet)
  • Immediate results and you didn’t have to wait for an awards ceremony
  • I finished and beat my previous course time.

The Bad:

  • Running with traffic
  • Uneven narrow shoulder to run on
  • Hilly course
  • Post-race refreshments left much to be desired (I didn’t even have anything)
  • No crowd support (saw 2 people cheering on the course)
  • No official race photos (there was someone who posted on FB but he stopped before I crossed the finish line.)
  • The 5k runners got the same medal and 5K AG winners got the same beer glass.  (And Half Marathoners ran 10 more miles!!)

My friend Tom who ran the 5k

The Ugly:

  • the Hills
  • the Road
  • the Traffic

So there are more positives than negatives!!! Overall, it was an OK race. Running with a friend is great.

Would I recommend this race?

Not really.  There are better ones out there. But if you do run it, you better train on hills.

Final Stats:

lghm16

I’m still 62!!

And I definitely walked more and slowed down (as usual) during the 2nd half of the race.

I wasn’t thrilled with my results.  But I wasn’t unhappy.  After all, I didn’t train for hills. It was far from my slowest time.  In fact, it was my second fastest half marathon and faster than the first time I ran it.

Every time, my lower back started to ache, I fixed my form and stopped hunching over my shoulders.  And my awful feet only received two minor blisters.

The day after, I felt great and was even able to go for my group run (though I didn’t do the speed drills and ran slowly.)

However, if I want to run another hilly course, I’ve got some work to do… (Wait a minute, I said that last time.)

Next Up:

I have two races this weekend. Yes, TWO!!

sro16

I signed up for the 10k on Saturday.  It’s a nice small local race along the Hudson River and there’s a free pasta dinner the night before.

1st

last year with 2 friends

Then on Sunday, I signed up for a 5k.  Normally these two races are not scheduled on the same weekend.

This one is a local race in a quiet neighborhood that raises money for ALS. Maybe there’ll even be cherry blossoms this year.

2nd

last year also

Last year, I won age group awards in both races.  But after just running a half marathon and racing two days in a row, I have no such lofty aspirations.

I’m looking forward nice spring weather and enjoying my runs.  I may add more miles on Sunday (if I feel good) after the 5k or may be I’ll just enjoy not training for my next half marathon.

Happy Running!  How do you handle a hilly race?  Do you have any races coming up?  What are you thinking about today?

Wednesday Word: Dreamer

Deb Runs

Every Wednesday, the Deb from Deb Runs will be providing a word about which to blog. Kind of like a nice little blog prompt. Posts can be fitness or health related, but don’t have to be, so really anyone can play along. Just be sure to link up with InLinkz on Deb’s main post, and share the love by reading and commenting on other’s participant’s posts.

Today’s word is DREAMER.

The first thing that comes to mind, of course, is John Lennon’s song, right?

I don’t think of myself as a “dreamer.”

a person whose ideas and plans are not practical or based in reality

I think I know my body’s limitations.

Sub 8 minute miles? Sub 27 minute 5K? Sub 2 hour half marathon?

I don’t think so.

I want to run for a long time.  I don’t want to risk getting injured.  I am realistic about my abilities.

That doesn’t mean that I won’t give it my best shot in every race I run.

stock5

I WILL!

Now this would be dreaming:

But seriously, before I was a runner, I used to read about the Freihofer Run for Women.  I used to think that it was an awesome feat to be able to run 3 miles.

freihofesrace

Thousands of women did run the race but I wasn’t the least bit athletic and never thought I could or would.

Once I decided to try running, this was the first race that I wanted to do.  To me, it meant that I was really a “runner.”

after the race

my 3rd of out 8 FRWs.

So I guess, in a sense, running the Freihofer Run for Women was “a dream come true.”

Then after a few years of running 5ks, I wondered (or dreamed) about running a half marathon.  But I was 58.  Could I???

nhm2

YES, I COULD!!!!!

Happy Running! Are you a “Dreamer?” Do you or did you have a running “dream?”

TOTR: Race Swag

with Erika @ MCM Mama Runs,
Marcia @ Marcia’s Healthy Slice
and Patty @ My no-guilt life

This week’s topic is Dream race swag. What’s the best thing you ever got? What would you love?

I personally like things that are useful.

Here are some of my favorites:

I still use this lunch bag that I won as an Age Group award

AJH got 2nd place...we won a lunch bag which matches the race shirt
I love socks.

Glasses are cool. It came with a green tooth brush.

Wind breakers are practical.  I have them in green, blue, yellow and orange. (Unfortunately they stopped giving them out.)

Coffee mugs are great.

20140331-090811.jpg

And gloves are handy.

I recently got a sweatshirt that I really like.

img_8792

I’ve also gotten rain ponchos, ice packs, water bottles, food samples, baseball caps, sunglasses, towels, etc.

In addition to useful items, food is another swag item that I appreciate:

I have gotten gift cards for free ice cream and free donuts.  I’ve won restaurant gift cards.

IMG_3925

I’ve run 180 something races.  That’s a lot of swag. (Mostly junk but some good stuff.)

So what would be the perfect swag?

A jacket or sweatshirt, Starbucks or ice cream gift card, coupon for a free massage or gym membership, samples of energy bars or gel. (I could list other things but they would be cost prohibitive 🙂 )

Happy Running! What would be your perfect swag?

Friday Five: Earth Day

Every Friday, three DC area bloggers Mar at Mar On the Run, Cynthia at You Signed Up For What?! and Courtney from Eat Pray Run, DC to host the Friday Five linkup.  Anyone can join with their own Friday Five post (yes, it must be a Friday Five!!) They encourage you to visit other blogs on the linkup, comment, share and engage!

My Friday Five topic is Five Ways to Celebrate Earth Day (as a Runner).

1.   Avoid Using Bottled Water.

Carry a re-fillable water bottle or re-fill a plastic used one.

At work, I have a bottle like pictured above and I just keep it filled with water. I get lots of bottled water at races.  I save the bottles and just re-fill them.

2. Don’t use K-Cups or Tea Bags

Make your coffee the old fashioned way.  Buy teas leafs instead of tea bags.

I know those K-Cups are so fast and easy but I haven’t broken down and bought a Keurig.  If I make coffee, I use my espresso machine. I also prefer making herbal teas using leaves.  They taste so much better and you can use as much as you need.

3.  Walk or Run rather than Drive

If you can walk, do it! Better yet, run to your location.

20140530-145626-53786500.jpg

I wish I lived near stores so I could run & shop.  But I do try to not drive when it is feasible.  I always park at work and then walk to races located in downtown Albany instead of adding more pollution to the crowded area. Yesterday, I went out to eat with 2 co-workers and they drove but I walked to and from the restaurant (it was only a mile.)

4.  Bring your own Bags when you shop.

If you race, you are lucky, many give out re-usable bags as swag.  Plus, you can buy them at most stores for $1.

IMG_7006

I am the official bag lady.  My trunk is full of them.

5.  Use less water at home.

That means, don’t wash your hair everyday.  Even if you have oily hair, there’s dry shampoo. You may not need to shower every day either.  I know I’m going out on a limb here (but I am not a sweater.)

I have thick dry unruly hair.  I only wash it once a week. I shower on most days.  But not all, especially if I didn’t run or work out.

Happy Running!  How are you celebrating Earth Day?

TOLT: Injuries, Half Marathons, etc.

Since it is Thursday,  I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

thinking out loud

Here’s what I’m thinking about today…

Did I dream it?

Last Sunday, I did my last long run.  I used to only run 8 miles the weekend before my half but the last few trainings, I’ve done 10 miles.  So that’s what I planned.  Accidentally I ran 11 but at 4:1 intervals and I felt great afterward.

Arrow Hitting The Heel Of A Foot, Achilles Heel, Symobolizing Weakness And Vulnerability Clipart Illustration Image by Maria Bell

Then in the middle of the night, I woke up with an ache in my right Achilles.  Of course I freaked. The first thing that came to mind was an injury I had in 2011 and the 4 weeks of PT and NO RUNNING.  That would mean a DNS for this half marathon on Sunday and DNSing 11 shorter races in the next few months.

So I iced it, took ibuprofen and put on a compression sock.

The next morning, it felt fine but I was still worried so I wore compression socks to work.  I even considered skipping my evening running practice.

Well, I went for a walk and it felt fine. No pain!

I decided to go to my running group and play it by ear. If it hurt, I would quit.

On the schedule were 8 400m intervals at 5k pace.  They are hard if you are healthy.  My coach recommended not going all out and running at a 15K pace.  That’s what I did. No sign of soreness or pain. Not even a twinge. It feels perfectly normal.

Since then, I have played tennis and I ran 5 miles last night.

Did I dream this injury??

Tennis Elbow

Another strange injury. It’s hurt for about a month.  I stopped playing tennis for 3 weeks and then played once. My elbow wasn’t improving.  It wasn’t worse but it hurt all the time. So I tried to just ignore it.  I even pulled weeds over the weekend.

Then Tuesday, I realized that the pain had completely disappeared. No soreness at all.

I played tennis that evening – no pain.

WTH!?

Next Half Marathon

Half #19 is almost here. The only thing I am worried about is the weather.

apor 23

apr24

It will be chilly in the morning, I bet – 30’s but then warm up.

img_9210

I will definitely wear a skirt and compression socks but I may be switching from the tank. I definitely will have a throw away shirt and arm sleeves.

I know the route and it is very HILLY.  Too late now to train on hills!

I ran this course in 2011 and finished in 2:22:39.  Last month I ran a hilly half marathon & finished in 2:22:40. So my guess is that I will finish between 2:15 and 2:30.

NO GOALS!! Just want to enjoy the race and not get injured!!!

Speed Work instead of Half Marathon Training

I have decided not to train for my next half marathon. (Do as I say not as I do…)

My weekends are too filled up with races.

  • 4-30-16 – Spring Run Off 10K
  • 5-01-16 – Cherry Blossom 5k
  • 5-07-16 – Mastodon Challenge 15k
  • 5-08-16 – Mother’s Day 5K (for GOTR)
  • 5-12-16 – Albany Law Day 5k Against Domestic Violence
  • 5-14-16 – Summer 5k Addiction Awareness Run
  • 5-18-16 to 5-25-16 – TENNIS VACATION IN FLORIDA
  • 5-29-16 – Vermont City Marathon Relay
  • 6-04-16 – Freihofer’s Run for Women 5k
  • 6-12-16  – Run for Help 5k (for STEM)

I am going on vacation. Weekend boating season is starting.

No time for long runs.

Hopefully my legs will not forget in 5 weeks how to complete 13.1 miles.

11203122_10204050010521064_4214761515489463940_n

can’t wait for fun in the sun

So I guess I will focus on speed.  That doesn’t mean that I will get faster (but that would be nice.) But I’m not hating our intervals on Mondays as much as I thought.  (I only wish I had fresh legs for one Monday.)

I’ve never run a half (healthy) without all my long runs.  So we’ll see if I stick to this new plan?

Happy Running! Have you ever had mysterious injuries? Do you always do your long runs before a big race? What’s on your mind today?
