FFF: First Ultimate Coffee Date of 2023

It’s that time of the month…

Hello 2023 Happy New Year 2023 31st December 2023 Loading Gift Coffee Mug

time to join up with Coco & Deborah for their ultimate coffee date.

New year and as always, there are things to update you on:

1. Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I added another Half Marathon to my 2023 schedule (#5).

It was NOT planned.

But I got an email that said I had a guaranteed entry to

The Brooklyn Half Marathon is back with sweltering heat

May 20, 2023

According to the standards, I DID NOT qualify because my qualifying race was when I was 69 not 70 (so my time was not fast enough) …. but hey CARPE DIEM!

I’m in!

my rainy Brooklyn Half of 2018

2.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I almost registered for the Cherry Blossom 10 miler in DC.

Cuz?

FOMO!! (Damn you bloggers!)

I did not…. (but I know they always have many bibs available since they allow deferrals if I change my mind and someone needs a roommate)

3.Over coffee

I’d tell you that when I registered for the above race, I forgot that I had added on a 10 miler to my April Half for the following weekend.

May 28, 2023

It was cheaper to register for both races and you get a third medal if you race the challenge…

4.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I met my annual mileage challenge for the third year in a row! (It wasn’t my best year. That was 2016 with 1046 miles.)

Jan – 102 miles
Feb – 80 miles
Mar – 89 miles
Apr – 89 miles
May – 80 miles
Jun – 73 miles
Jul – 80 miles
Aug – 90 miles
Sept – 90 miles
Oct –  94 miles
Nov – 81 miles
Dec – 80 miles

It’s about 84 miles a month so only 20 miles or so week…

If I do not get sick or injured, it perfectly doable.

It has kept me racing yet injury-free.  So I see no need for change. My 2023 goal is again 1000 miles!!

5.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that there were NO PRs in 2022 nor were there any PR goals. There may have been a few PWs but since I don’t remember, obviously I don’t care.

My main goal for 2023 is to race as often as possible and to meet up with as many friends as able (through running, racing, blogging, etc.)

Happy Running! What’s new with you?  Please share.

2022 Recap and Look Ahead to 2023

As you may remember, I had 22 goals for 2022!!

You can read about them HERE.

I did meet most (14) of them and the remaining goals just didn’t seem applicable any longer (so I let them go).  You can read my update HERE.

Here’s a summary of my 2022 running year:

  • Miles: 1028
  • Races: 34
  • Half Marathons: 9 (one was virtual)
  • 10 Milers: 1
  • 15Ks: 3
  • 10Ks: 1
  • 5 Milers: 3
  • 5Ks: 10
  • Other Distances: 6
  • Out of Town Races: 5
  • New Races: 7
  • Age Group Awards: 17
  • Volunteering: 3
  • Bloggers Met: 4
  • DNS: 1
  • DNF: 0
  • PRs: 0
  • PWs: 0
  • Shoes: Topos (only)
  • Apparel: Skirts (only) from Skirt Sports
  • Blog Posts: 154

No, there will NOT be 23 goals for 2023… LOL.

Here are the ones I have so far:

  1. Run at least 1000 miles
  2. Run at least 3x a week (with one being a Long Run)
  3. Run with others (as often as possible)
  4. Run at least 25 races
  5. Volunteer (at several races)
  6. Participate in at least one Blogger Meet-Up
  7. Try something new
  8. Listen to more podcasts
  9. Update my music playlist
  10. No Injuries
  11. No PWs
  12. No DNS or DNF races
  13. Blog 3x each week

As you can see, there is no big hairy goal for 2023 (at least not yet.)

I almost added Run the NYC Marathon but I haven’t committed to it yet.  I may even add run a trail race or join a gym….

Time will tell….

Happy Running! How did your running go in 2022?  Did you meet your goals? Do you have new goals for 2023?  Please share.

Weekly Run Down for 12.25.22-1.1.23: Welcome 2023!!

Many people in my office took this past week off. I did not. I save my time off for vacations.

IOW, work was busy but I tried to get my runs in.

Today I even am running the usual New Year’s Day (informal) race.

Last Week:

  • Sunday – Started the day off with a Christmas run (even though we didn’t celebrate the holiday). It was chilly but at least no negative wind chill temps.

ran in town parallel to the icy rail trail.. in my holiday garb

For dinner, we hit our favorite Chinese restaurant and then visited my MIL.

  • Monday – #Nevermissamonday…. Long Run re-scheduled!

I had planned to run with a friend at the Crossings but he wasn’t feeling well so plan B was one loop solo at UAlbany and the 2nd loop with a running friend.

sunnier on my first loop but it was nice to have company on the 2nd.

  • Tuesday – Rest Day (after 4 days in a row of running). Back to work and then a mall walk after work.

after reading Lisa’s blog, I had to try the peppermint Frosty – it didn’t disappoint

  • Wednesday – Another busy work day so I could only run after work at UAlbany. I was thrilled again to have some company on this boring route.

gorgeous sunset and no wind… perfect evening for a run

  • Thursday – I had to squeeze in my run during lunch.  At least I had time to drive somewhere…..

parked at park n ride and ran around an apt complex for a change of scenery on this sunny day

and then after work, I took my younger stepson out to dinner as a Xmas gift. It was nice to catch up…

  • Friday – Rest Day and I hosted mah jongg at my home (so I had to work and then clean = not so restful.)
  • Saturday – Long Run Day.

It was balmy compared to last Saturday and I even had company on the run. Still our normal running paths were covered with residual ice and snow. So we ran at the Crossings and in the nearby roads… It was one of my faster long runs… Running with others can make you push the pace.

ran the first 2.5 miles with Stan and then joined Barbara, Sherry & Judy for the rest… We even got very sweaty!!! Then met Chris, Denise & Deb for brunch

  • Sunday – Winter Series #2 Race.

The choice was a half marathon or 5.5K.  The shorter distance for me! And since I ran 7 miles the day before, this will again just be a “fun” run.

And it doesn’t start until noon…

Perfect since although the hubby & I didn’t go out, we did stay up until midnight watching TV and drinking champagne.

last year!! I expect this year’s race to be MUCH SLOWER and maskless!

This Coming Week on the Run–

  • Monday – run
  • Tuesday – rest day, hair appt
  • Wednesday – run
  • Thursday – run
  • Friday –  rest day, mah jongg
  • Saturday Long Run,
  • Sunday –   rest day, hike?

This Coming Week on the Blog –

  • Tuesday –2022 Recap and Look Ahead to 2023
  • Friday – Ultimate Coffee Date

Happy Running! How is your running going? Any races to start off the year? How did you celebrate New Year’s Eve? Please share.

FFF: The Last Runfessions of 2022

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

And the last one for this year!!

1.  I runfess…

I flunked Planksgiving.

I had good intentions and I started out strong. In fact, I planked for the first 12 days.

On November 13, there was the Stockadeathon 15k race…

And you what happens once you stop, it’s hard to start again.

And so I didn’t.

2.  I runfess…

Last month I admitted that I had a weakness for cute running shirts.

Actually I have a bigger obsession for calf sleeves.

I like to wear ones that match my outfit, and for each season or holiday…

St. Patrick’s Day and Thanksgiving covered.

Now I have three new pair:

3.  I runfess…

I signed up for ALL FIVE races offered in Dec-Feb through a local racing club.

They are FREE, have age group awards and delicious food after… so why not??

Well, the races are on Sunday.  My running friends run on Saturday… the course is quite boring but there are usually three distances to choose from (the longer the distance, you more you loop).

First world problems…

I may walk on Saturday and then race on Sunday or run long on Saturday and fun run on Sunday… TBD

Winter Series #1 = “fun” run

4.  I runfess…

So with no half marathons scheduled for December and January, I’m losing my weekend long run mojo.

It’s hard to want to run double digits in the freezing cold, right?

brrrrr

I even considered signing up for the Fred LeBow Half Marathon again in NYC..

No, I didn’t sign up!!

At least I have one in February and March to train for.

2021 Publix Fort Lauderdale A1A VIRTUAL Marathon, Half Marathon, 5K, & Kids Race

2023 United Airlines NYC Half

5. I runfess…

Instead I signed up for half marathons in April, May (this one should be a Runfession but I’ll explain next Friday) and September:

Helderberg to Hudson Half Marathon

April 15, 2023

2023 RBC Brooklyn Half Apply

May 20, 2023

September 23, 2023

Happy Running! Anything to runfess this month?  Please share.

TT: 2022 in Photos

Last week’s topic was: Your Year in Photos

Definitely one of my favorites topics because I LOVE to take pictures. The challenge was limiting each month to ONE or TWO pictures.

Here you go:

January

My first half marathon of the year and it took place in Central Park, NYC.

February

I took my annual vacation to Florida’s east coast to visit friends

and ran a half marathon (in the rain)

At the of of the month, I returned to NYC to run another half marathon.

March

I ran a 5 mile race in the worst weather conditions ever.

April

Couldn’t resist signing up for a new race in Central Park at peak cherry blossom time

My favorite local half marathon returned to its original course and I had my best half marathon finish time of the year.

May (my favorite month).

I ran a 5k in a costume (a first for me)

I ran to the top of Prospect Mountain again

I had a blast with my tennis peeps in Naples, Florida

and celebrated my birthday while I was there with a dinner at sunset

The tulips were in full bloom in Washington Park, Albany

June

I ran the Freihofer Run for Women for the 15th time…

and won a baseball bat at a 5k.

and viewed the Interactive Van Gogh exhibit (for the 3rd time)

July

Celebrating the Fourth in (running) style…

For the first time since the Pandemic I worked in NYC (and ran a 5k in Brooklyn one evening.)

Sundays in the summer were reserved for boat time on Lake George

August

A new furry addition to the family

and on my Mondays off, I did some scenic hikes in MA.

September

I talked my friends in joining me for a Labor Day weekend half marathon

I also discovered a new place to view and pick sunflowers

October

Another successful race-cation.. this year’s took place in Maine.

In addition to a race and other shenanigans, it included multiple beach sunrises

I got into the holiday spirit for a 5K

Reunited with some college friends in NYC and enjoyed peak fall foliage during a run in Central Park

November

A busy month with three races: 15k, half marathon and a 10k

December

Back to NYC to race and spectate the holiday displays.

Happy Running! What was your favorite photo or event from 2022? Please share.

Weekly Run Down for 12.18.22-12.25.22: Holidays and 1000 miles!!

Chanukah or Christmas….Hope it was a good one!!

my house

And on Monday, I reached my yearly mileage goal. Woo Hoo!

Not everyone cares but to me, it’s important because it means that I had a healthy year (zero injuries). It also means that I didn’t use excuses (like too hot, too cold, too busy, too tired, etc.) to skip runs.

Last Week:

  • Sunday – Work has been crazy busy so although I did run 6 miles on Saturday, I felt the need to add in another short run today.

My plan was to run early and then join my running friends for brunch (postponed from Saturday).  Yes, we brunch even if we don’t run. LOL.

Well, I procrastinated and so I had to run AFTER brunch.

ran through town (on the cleared roads)

  • Monday – #Nevermissamonday…. I had plans after work so I squeezed in a run at lunch.

And guess what?

2022 mileage goal met!!

Then I took my BFF out to dinner to celebrate her birthday.

sorry this is last year’s pic but the special dessert was Cannolis.

  • Tuesday – Rest day!  No time to run during the work day and had errands to run after work.
  • Wednesday – Back at it for a lunch run in the neighborhood.

sunny but COLD!!!

  • Thursday -Definitely difficult with work and the weather to get my run in… So I had to skip it.

In the evening I attended our annual tennis holiday party… Food, drink, music, gifts… always a fun evening.

  • Friday – This is my usual rest day since I don’t like to run before a long run day… but with crazy weather predicted (rain, wind, freezing temps) I decided to squeeze in a run before work.

it felt like spring – notice no beanie, gloves or jacket and I SWEAT!

But as predicted, the wind got insane as the day progressed and the temps dropped. I made the right decision.

Even mah jongg got cancelled. But I did get together with a friend for a holiday drink (it was COLD and WINDY but the roads were ok.)

  • Saturday – Long Run Day.

Again a challenge to choose a location where there was no ice or snow. And with the wind and cold temps (neg degrees with the wind chill), I had no takers on a run companion.

I went solo and then joined them for brunch. Unfortunately I procrastinated too long and only had time for a short one… Long run is postponed until Monday!

It was frigid but not really as bad as I expected (only my face was cold). Brunch was yummy with great conversation and got a surprise gift (a small bag) from my friend Denise.

  • Sunday – Normally we’d be celebrating with the family but my stepson went to his in-laws and my MIL was not feeling well so the celebration got postponed until New Year’s Day.

I am planning another short run and then the hubby and I want to go out for Chinese.

This Coming Week on the Run–

  • Monday – DAY OFF, Long Run
  • Tuesday – rest day, dinner with stepson
  • Wednesday – run after work
  • Thursday – run during lunch
  • Friday –  rest day, mah jongg chez moi
  • Saturday Long Run (7 miles)
  • Sunday –   Winter Series #2 race (5.5K)

This Coming Week on the Blog –

  • Tuesday – 2022 in Photos
  • Friday – Runfessions

FFF: Compression Socks – Yay or Nay?

When I first started running, I didn’t know what compression socks were.

Before the big race

I bought my first pair of compression socks (from runningskirts.com) for my first half marathon because I heard that they would help.

I don’t know if they helped but I finished and felt good after.  So who knows?

After that, I wore that same pair on long runs and for half marathons.

I am thankful for being able to cross the finish line!!!

In 2012 after coming back from ankle surgery, I bought more pairs of compression socks and started to wear them for most of my races. I bought different brands but mostly Pro Compression.

I became addicted and wore them almost all of the time.

However, I did switch several years ago to Compression Calf Sleeves.  For the simple reason that I like to choose my own socks and still have the benefit of compression on my legs.

Also my preferred brands are Legend or Zensah.

So why should you wear them?

1.Protection:  They protect your legs from small scratches, abrasions and nasty things like poison ivy on a trail.

2.Swelling:  Compression technology has been proven to limit swelling.

3.Dirt:  Collects on your socks and not on your legs.

4.Warmth:  Allows you to wear skirts on those iffy days when you’d reluctantly wear tights.

5.Coolness:  No, they don’t keep you cool, but they look good when you color coordinate them with your outfit.

Happy Running! Do you wear compression socks or calf sleeves?  If so, which brand? Please share.

And remember, the older you are, the better your chance of winning in your age group. You don’t have to be fast to win. Sometimes, you just have to show up!

Happy Running! Did you run many races this year? What is your favorite bling from 2022? Please share.

Since today is Tuesday, I’m linking up with Zenaida and Kim (Kooky Runner).

with co-hosts Coach Debbie RunsConfessions of a Mother RunnerMile by MileRuns with Pugs, and Laura Norris Running.

Weekly Run Down for 12.11.22-12.18.22: Let the work travel begin…

I must say that it was way easier to schedule runs when you work from home.

But my job is now starting to require us to travel.

Last Week:

  • Sunday – Upset stomach (from too much partying the night before) and snow falling did not stop me from running my last race of the year.

I did decide to run most of it slowly with a running friend who was recovering from an injury.

We both stayed upright, had fun so I’m glad I didn’t wimp out and stay home.

  • Monday – #Nevermissamonday….

With a busy week ahead, I wanted to make sure I ran today especially since it was my day off.

Coincidentally, two of my running friends were available to run with me… the challenge was to find a path that was not snow-covered.

6″ of snow on the paths so we ran in the roads

We decided it was too cold, windy and icy to hike so instead I went to TJs.

  • Tuesday –  With travelling for work, you never know if you will be able to run at all…

I hate to skip runs but I was just too pooped to get up early.

So I rented a car, drove to LI (3.5 hrs), checked into my hotel, and set up for the next day.

It was still light enough to squeeze in a run..

a short one cuz I was hungry and running out of daylight.

  • Wednesday – Long work day and my only running option would be the hotel treadmill….

or so I thought…

amazing holiday displays in the park where I ran the day before… of course I did run a little (until it got too crowded).

I did grow up in this neighborhood but unfortunately my high school friends were both on vacation (in warmer climates) so I had eat dinner solo.

  • Thursday – After work, I had to drive back home so no running today.

A rainy, snowy grueling 5.5 hour drive…..UGH!!!

  • Friday – Another rest day because I never like to run a day before a long run.

But I had to go into the office in the morning for a holiday breakfast/meeting.

Mah jongg cancelled due to an impending snowstorm so I met a friend for wine instead.

  • Saturday – Long Run!  But where? And with whom?

No one was available so I had to run alone.  I decided to drive to UAlbany hoping the paths would be cleared.

Nope.  Still snow-covered so I ran 2 loops in the road (I could have stayed home and run in my neighborhood.)

sunny but oh so windy!!

Instead of exchanging gifts, we had a really nice dinner out with my stepson and his wife.

  • Sunday – A few miles planned in the neighborhood and then meeting my running friends for our postponed brunch.

Pet Hanukkah Greeting Cards:Cat Kitten - Picture 1 of 1

This Coming Week on the Run–

  • Monday – run, BFF b-day dinner
  • Tuesday – rest day
  • Wednesday – run
  • Thursday – run, tennis holiday party
  • Friday –  rest day, mah jongg
  • Saturday Long Run
  • Sunday –   hike? family dinner postponed until New Year’s.

This Coming Week on the Blog –

  • Tuesday – Bling 2022
  • Friday – Compression Socks – Yay or Nay?

FFF: The Benefit of Shoe Insoles

When I first started running, I went to Fleet Feet and bought shoes that they recommended. They also told me that I needed to buy insoles.  As a new runner, I did what I was told.  I didn’t want to ruin my feet.

As I proceeded to order shoes though the years, I moved my pink Super Feet insoles to the new shoes. I even replaced the insoles.

Once I switched to Topos because they have a wider toe box, my insoles didn’t fit right so I just used the existing insoles. And I have continued to buy Topos and not replace the insoles with more expensive ones.

Until recently.

One of my running friends was suffering from PF and bought insoles which she said helped greatly.

That got me thinking about my neuroma.  It doesn’t hurt most of the time but by the end of a long race I can still feel it.

And I so I put insoles in my shoes…

The verdict is still out but my foot did not hurt during my last half marathon (but it could have been numb from the cold. LOL)

5 Benefits of wearing Insoles:

1. Reduce strain on and stabilize your feet (and ankle).

2. Experience relief from foot, heel and arch pain, including pain from plantar fasciitis and neuromas.

3. Energize your runs by providing comfort and support to your feet.

4. Improve overall gait and pronation.

5. Help prevent common running related issues.

5 Insoles recommended for runners:

1.Super Feet

“Clinically proven to increase comfort, minimize repetitive stress and prevent injuries, the proprietary Superfeet shape cradles your heels and hugs your arches to deliver just the right amount of targeted support…”

They come in different colors depending your arch type and if you use them for comfort or pain relief. (cost~$50)

2. CURREX RunPRO Insole

“These insoles use a deep heel cup, dynamic arch support and high-rebound cushioning to keep your feet feeling fresh, mile after mile…”

There are three different arch profiles to choose from (Low, Medium, and High) (Cost~$50)

3.Powerstep PULSE Maxx Insoles

Powerstep Insoles, PULSE Maxx, Over-Pronation Corrective Insole, Running Shoe Insert, Sports Orthotic For Women and Men

“These insoles have a firm but flexible shell with built-in arch support and a heel cradle to keep your feet secure and supported while you take an evening stroll or train for your next 5k…” (cost=$50)

4. Sole Active Insoles

Unlike other insoles that have a relatively quick break-in period, the SOLE Active insoles have a roughly 3 day break-in period (per their published data).  Cost ~ $55

SOLE Active Insoles

5. Cadence Insoles

Cadence Insoles

These Insoles are designed by a Physical Therapist, with the goal of providing semi-rigid orthotic support while also providing shock absorption. (cost~$45)

5 more things to consider re: insoles:

1.Google Insoles for runners and you will find so many options. There are cheaper ones than the ones listed above but you get what you pay for, right?

‘2.Talk to your podiatrist for recommendations. You may need custom orthotics and your insurance may cover the cost.

3.You should break in new running shoes before adding insoles.

4.Insoles are not a miracle cure for a an injury. See a doctor first…

5.Lastly, while your foot mechanics are important in running so are posture, cadence, and stride length, etc.
