Running Update 12.26.16-1.1.17

ru

Last Week:

  • Monday – I was supposed to go out to dinner & movie after work but instead I went shopping to check out the after Christmas sales at the mall. Didn’t spent a lot but got some steps in.
  • Tuesday – I squeezed in a run before tennis. It was 40 degrees – felt like a heat wave.

After tennis, the tennis ladies celebrated with a dinner out (yes another.)

  • Wednesday – Decided to go for another after work run due to the impending snowstorm.

Ran in town where I used to run all the time before there was the rail trail.

  • Thursday– A hair appointment was the only activity I had today. Snow hit us again. But at least we didn’t get as much as predicted.
  • Friday – Despite yesterday’s snow, the roads were clear enough and I did go for a run before my evening mah jongg game.

Alyssa had to cancel so I was back running in town

  • Saturday – A scheduled rest day to do errands, get things done around the house, and rest up for New Year’s Eve. A quiet evening of a movie and dinner with the hubby.

sad but good

  • Sunday – I ran my first HMRRC winter series run of the season and my first race of 2017. Th e weather was perfect for running (though a little windy).  I loved starting the year off with a “relaxing” free race.

lucky for me that the speedy ladies ran the half marathon option so I won 2nd in my AG 🙂

After lots of refreshments, I dragged myself out for a little over 3 more miles.

18 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days

This Week:

  • Monday – 3 mile run

Friday Five 2.0 – Winter Running

I am linking up with Running on Happy & Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday Five 2.0 linkup!

This week, the theme is FREE so I chose: 5 Things I Like About Running in the Winter

All I usually do on this blog every winter is complain about how cold it is and how I hate it! I mean I live in the NE, I should expect it to be cold and snowy.

So I decided to point out what I like about winter running:

1. It doesn’t usually rain.

13662262_10153694932756074_56283901147261787_o

not a fan of rain!!

I will run in the snow and cold but I will not run in the rain. Hence, no rain is a good thing for my running.

HMRRC WS#4 - 15K

happier here

2. You don’t sweat (as much).

So I have less laundry because I can wear my running clothes more than once.

IMG_4793

However, it is a challenge to pack everything you may need to wear.

And I can run after work, change my clothes and then go out with friends (Don’t judge LOL).

img_3216

3. It’s pretty outside.

IMG_5082

Well, at least most of the time.

IMG_4404

4. There are free races.

Race fees add up. I am lucky that our local running group (HMRRC) sponsors 6 free races during the winter. There are 3 distances to choose from at each race.

img_8262

It’s informal so it’s just a run with friends and with good food after.

img_8164

5. There’s not a lot to do and it’s get me outside.

IMG_5050

In the summer, there’s boating, biking, hiking, tennis, gardening…many things to do outdoors.

Winter_4-145

But in the winter, I don’t ski, ice skate, snowshoe or snowmobile. Running is my only outdoor activity.

so they say…

Happy Running! What do you like about running in the winter?

Monday Running Update

Last Week:

  • Monday – Back in the frigid NE.  I decided to squeeze in a run before tennis because the rest of the week looked even worse weather-wise.  Although it snowed Sunday night, the path is always cleared at UAlbany.
img_3545

it was nice until the sleet & freezing rain started- ouch!

  • Tuesday – I was scheduled to play tennis again so I decided to skip the run and went shopping instead.
  • Wednesday – Another busy day but I was able to squeeze a run into before our STEM celebratory dinner.

img_3550

  • Thursday– Colder and windier.  I wimped out and cancelled my run with Alyssa and went shopping. Good News!! The battery in my iPhone (it kept shutting off when it got cold – hello I run in the winter!!) is defective and they replaced it for free!!! 3 hours in the mall without a phone = torture!
  • Friday – Rest day #3.  I celebrated by mentee’s birthday at Canvas, Corks & Forks. We ate (mac n cheese bar), drank, painted and laughed.  Then went out for dessert.

  • Saturday – Rest day #4. Total slacker. Snow, sleet, rain. A day to start addressing those holiday cards and wrapping the presents.
2016-xmas-card

I always make my cards – obviously there was boating theme this year

In the evening, we had our annual tennis ladies party. Always a fun time!!

  • Sunday – Started the day with brunch with Judy & 2 other running friends.

they may have talked me into a fall half marathon

After doing some errands, I braved the cold and wind and ran 6 miles.

my favorite rail trail has too many patches of ice 😦

Then in the evening, went out for appetizers and drinks with a friend. (Maybe I should have run more than 6 miles LOL)

12 miles done with 3 runs and 4 rest days (Still on a training break)

This Week:

  • Monday – rest day, tennis
  • Tuesday – 4 mile run
  • Wednesday – rest day, dinner with a friend
  • Thursday – 4 mile run
  • Friday – rest day, mah jongg
  • Saturday – 6 mile run, lights in the park with Amanda & sons
  • Sunday – rest day, holiday with the fam

Monday Running Update

Last Week:

  • Monday – I used to run in Washington Park after work all the time.  But now that I changed jobs, I usually don’t feel like driving there and UAlbany is much closer. Tonight I decided to run there because I wanted to see the holiday light displays.

  • Tuesday – Just a Rest day. I took a wet walk at lunch and I didn’t even play tennis.  I did some errands and finished packing for my trip.
  • Wednesday – Due to the rainy forecast, I had planned to get up early to run but it was just too dark and foggy…  So another rest day with no burning off calories consumed at my monthly dinner out with my tennis friends.

  • Thursday – Not ideal but I felt I had to get some miles in so I squeezed in a short one before my flight.

Judy & I flew (via Atlanta) to Panama City Beach, FL. No travel issues and Holly was nice enough to pick us up at the airport and drive us to her house where we would be staying for the next 5 days.

  • Friday – Rest day but a busy day with bib pickup, carb loading and hanging out with 7 other awesome bloggers.

  • Saturday – We ran the Panama City Beach Half Marathon.  We all finished – there wer sone PRs and I even won my age group.  We all had a blast. Then we celebrated, of course.

  • Sunday – We started the day with a walk to get donuts followed by a short slow recovery run with a view of the ocean.

that’s WALK not work

20 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday – 6 mile run in Fl, fly home
  • Tuesday – Rest day, tennis
  • Wednesday – 4 mile run
  • Thursday – 4 mile run
  • Friday – Rest day, holiday party at work, mah jongg chez moi
  • Saturday – 5k race (in the evening)

Monday Running Update

Last Week:

  • Monday – Winter has arrived. It was cold. (In the 30s but with the wind, felt like 19!) I reluctantly went to my Troy Turkey Trot Training group run since it was our last one. We did some speed drills and it wasn’t so bad at all.

  • Tuesday – Sat in a training all day and it started with this:

So I had to go on a quick cold windy run before playing tennis.  But at least my tennis game was indoors.

  • Wednesday –  Rest day. Went for a walk in the mall with my bff after work.
  • Thursday –  I ran both the Troy Turkey Trot 10k and 5k races. I raced the 10K and ran the 5k for fun. Both were fun!!

no PRs here but my times in both were better than last year – 57:51 and 30:57. Happy that the weather cooperated.

Then we had Thanksgiving dinner at my MIL’s that evening. I ate back all the calories t hat I burned off in those races.

I forgot to take a group picture but here’s my hubby’s nephew cutting the turkey

  • Friday – Rest day and work day. A nice quiet day because everyone took the day off. Besides work, I took a walk at lunch and played mah jongg in the evening.
  • Saturday – A rainy morning so I decided to do my last long run in the afternoon after my hair appt. I wasn’t sure how rested by legs would be after Thursday so I asked Judy to run with me. We did a nice slow run/walk on the Nisky bike path (except for the last 1/2 mile that I did at race pace. )

That evening the hubby and I went to the movies since we hadn’t been in a long time.

Image result for allied movie

  • Sunday – Rest day. Got my nails done and a lot of other stuff in preparation for my upcoming race-cation.

23 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

TOLT: Work, IRUN4, Weather, Racing, etc.

Since it is Thursday,  I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

thinking out loud

Here’s what I’m thinking…

  • You take people for granted when you don’t see them face-to-face.

I have mentioned many times that I joined the IRUN4 program and I was matched up with John Anthony 2 1/2 years ago. He suffers from mitochrondial (and other) disease and cannot go to school, run and do the things that normal kids his age can do.

img_9061

yes, he recently dyed his hair green (that is the color in support of Mito)

In the beginning, I posted photos on the IRUN4 FB site every time I ran. I dedicated all my miles to JA.

I do send him race shirts and Christmas presents.

I also still run for him.  But I have gotten lazier and lazier and now I pretty much only post pictures when I race.  Luckily that is very often.

img_9060

Just Tuesday, his mom posted this in FB and tagged me:

Mom: JA!! We are so blessed. He is a fighter. I can’t believe in just 3 days HE will be 12!! What!?!?! Yep. Our Mito warrior will be 12. We are so blessed and we don’t take it for granted either.

Me: I will run 12 miles for JA on Saturday.

Mom: JA says awesome and he doesn’t need to wish you good luck because you are the best but he does send you two thumbs up and big thanks. JA loves you. Side note. Notice the shirt?? Lol. HE loves his shirts. The ones you send him from your races mean the world to him!

Me: Sniff..sniff

I need to post more often.  I do think about him a lot but unless I post, he doesn’t know it.

This is a great program.  Check it out here:

Have you heard of IRUN4? Do you participate?

  • Sometimes work is just work.  That’s what is usually is for me.  (Teaching was different.  I loved teaching!)

This year, the law school where I work has decided to focus on being healthy.

In March, we had a Heart Healthy Challenge.

You got 50 points for completing 2 surveys and each week, you got 40 pts if you exercised for 45 min 3 times and 1 pt for each 10 minutes extra. 1st place got a $50 gift card to Dicks & $50 worth of Field Goods. (I came in 2nd with 466 pts.)

In April, we are participating in the Million Mile Month.  You just log your miles & other activities to win prizes.  My miles will automatically sync from my FitBit and I can also add in other non-walking/running activities like yoga, tennis, etc.)

MMM_VertLogo_2016_forweb_copy

So April 1,  we had a fun kick-off event.

Here are some of the other activities that have been planned:

albanylawday5k

So guess who is in charge of recruiting runners for the 5k? Yup, ME!!

If you work, are your co-workers into fitness?

  • I not going to whine about the fact that it is still winter here!   Or maybe I am.
img_7928

Me on Christmas Eve

12916803_10153489244636074_4958618643777745009_o

Me on April 3. I am not smiling about the weather. It was our 3rd attempt at a selfie.

How’s the weather where you live?

  • I signed up for a 10k this weekend. I am thinking of switching to the 5k.  The 10K is hilly.  So it would be good practice for my upcoming hilly half in 2 weeks. But it will be part of my 12 mile training run.  I like my training runs to be flat and easy (to avoid injury.) I am too competitive to slow down in a race. So I may do the 5k and then run 3 more miles. After that, hopefully, I will have company for the remaining 6 miles. Or I may grin and bear it and run the 10k and run 6 more miles on the Zim Smith Trail.
bacon hill

this year it is April 9 – and it’s one of my favorite races

Any advice?

Happy Running! What’s up with you this Thursday?

Delmar Dash 5 Mile Race Recap

dd16

It is nice to run a race that is only 10 minutes from your house.

This is my 5th time running this race and my 7th 5 miler.

My Delmar Dash times:

2015, 2014, 2013, 2011 – 45:26 (PR), 48:14, 47:39, 47:08

My Shamrock Shuffle times:
2016, 2015 –  46:28, 46:29

Now only if spring would arrive. We’ve had a few warm days but not today!! This was what they predicted:

img_9017

Yeah, right? Cold temps, snow and wind!!!

I woke up to snow on the ground.  It was 30 degrees but 18 with the windchill.  Yikes!

It’s always hard at this time of year to decide what to wear.  Too cold for spring clothes but I am tired of jackets and tights.

I opted for a jacket over a long sleeved shirt, a skirt attached to capris, compression socks, a hat & gloves and hoped that it would be enough.

I got there early and got a close spot in the parking lot. (I know, I am running 11 miles yet I want to park close.) I knew a few people doing this race so I went inside the school to look for them.

The race started on the street but ended in front of the school entrance – last year’s pic since you cannot see any snow

I bumped into a few people and we chatted. Then I picked up my shirt and bib.

img_9041

It was a pretty purple long sleeved tech shirt – I was almost tempted to wear it.

Then I bumped into Judy and met some of her friends.

img_9032

Finally met Jan who says that she has been stalking me online.

Soon Barbara arrived and we all hung out and chatted until the race started. It was too cold outside so we waited until the last minute.

My hope for the race was to have a decent finish time. That would be under 50 minutes. I had a PR last year and I doubted that I could or wanted to beat that. (I need to stay healthy for April 24!!)

I lined up with the faster runners including someone I work with (I just discovered that she is a runner but she is super speedy.)

Of course waiting for the race to begin, I was cold but I was fine as soon as I started running. My hands were cold for awhile but even they warmed up. (I even regretted that extra vest, I added at the last minute). And it was windy but only in gusts and much less than predicted. (Those winds came later.)

delmardash 037

I tried to start out fast but not too fast.  Though I never know what this is. And I probably did since my legs seemed to have zero energy today.

delmardash 038

I tired with each mile but tried my best to keep it up.

There were timing signs at every mile so I knew that I was not running well.

Plus almost everyone I knew (including Barbara) who was behind me passed me by and continued to get farther and farther ahead of me.

By the water stop at mile 2.5 or so, I needed to walk.

It helped a little but I never really got a second wind. Luckily this course is fairly flat.  And it should have been easier than the hilly 5 miler I ran 2 weeks ago but for some reason, it was not.

12961710_1150686451609249_4134798520562822503_n

12936497_1150686474942580_5336122735891536762_n

I finally saw the finish line and crossed at 47:XX (Officially 47:14 – almost 2 minutes slower than last year!!)

I found Barbara and we both waited for Judy who had a good race (finishing at 55 minutes or so).

img_9034

I went inside to get some food with Barbara. I had some soup, bread, birthday  cake and hot chocolate.  Judy went to change her clothes and get a massage.

I came in 4th in my age group.  The woman who came in 3rd was the one I beat in both races the last two weeks.  She is probably happy.

dd16

Splits: (according to my Garmin)

2015 / 2016

mile 1- 8:51 / 8:59
mile 2- 8:58 /  9:18
mile 3- 9:08 / 9:23
mile 4- 9:31 / 9:48
mile 5- 9:11 / 9:31
mile .02 – 7:92 / 6:34

45:26 / 47:14

dd

Well, all races can’t be good ones.  It wasn’t terrible.  I know that I could have run faster but I didn’t.  At least, I felt fine after the race.

Since this course is flat and near where I live, it is still one of my favorite races and I will run it again next year.

Here are some  pictures that I stole from FB 🙂 Thanks Dr. Tom!!

12916803_10153489244636074_4958618643777745009_o

Dr Tom said that he loved my outfit. I told him that if I couldn’t run “good” at least I could look good.

12891551_10153489244626074_5889971733087484145_o

This is Lara (a former tennis teammate). She had a PR!

Though after the race, it felt colder and windier, I needed to run 6 more miles…ugh!!

I was so happy that Judy and Barbara were going to keep my company.  I ran alone after my race last weekend and it wasn’t much fun.

I left my car in the parking lot and we headed into town. Then we cut over to the rail trail.

img_9038

The most interesting part of the run was watching 2 eagles soaring overhead.

img_9035

I ran with Barbara for awhile but I was tiring and my feet were starting to hurt (I wore old shoes because I didn’t want to get my expensive ones dirty – yeah, stupid!)

img_9040

Barbara has already turned around and is heading back

I finished the run walk/running with Judy.

img_9039

It was slow but it was so much nicer to have someone to talk to.  It made the run seem less painful. Eventually we completed 5 miles and arrived back at our cars. Unfortunately I still had to run one more mile.  And the wind picked up.  I was almost blown away several times.

Anyway – 11 miles done… 3 weeks until my  next half marathon.

Happy Running! How was your weekend? Any running or racing?

Thinking Out Loud Thursday: Technology, Training, Winter, Sleep and more…

thinking out loud

Since it is Thursday,  I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

Here’s what I’m thinking today…

Technology…

I was away for 6 days and I did not go on a computer.  Not even once. Not even tempted.

  • No reading blogs.
  • No commenting on blogs.
  • No blog postings (I scheduled them all before I left.)
  • No replying to emails.

I did minimally post to FB and IG with my phone so that my friends would not think I dropped off the face of the earth.

Sorry fellow bloggers, I ignored you all. But it felt great.

I’m back now … and trying to catch up.

Training…

I was so lucky to be spared the ugly winter weather typical for the NE.  I was able to get all my long runs in for my recent half marathon.

It would have been nice to schedule a break.

March 13, 2016

This half marathon is in 5 weeks!!!

It means that I don’t have a break from double digit long runs.  10, 11, 12, 8, and then 13.1

vcm16

VCM is the next one I registered for.

But I’m also even considering one for April 24 – 6 weeks after Celebrate Life.  Yes, I have lost my mind!!

Winter…

I just got back from Florida.

There was none of this:

Pat & I at Englewood Beach

in 2013

It was cold…40’s in the am and 50’s in the pm with awful cold winds off the water.

img_8380

in 2016

But I shouldn’t have been complaining.

This is what I saw yesterday.

img_8501

The low predicted for Sunday is -6 degrees and windy! And yes, I have to run 10 miles in that plus find a clear place to do it.

Sleep…

I am an awful sleeper. I have a hard time falling asleep and if I do, I have a hard time staying asleep.

Unfortunately, I recently discovered that my FitBit tracks my sleep patterns. (I had hid it originally.)

img_8502

I average some weeks getting 4 hours a night.  Some nights I get 3. I rarely get more than 5 hours. UGH!!

Aren’t you supposed to get 8 hours???

Happy Running! How are you surviving running in the winter?  Do you get enough sleep?  What are you thinking about this Thursday?

I also discovered that I can knit while riding the exercise bike so I did that every now and then.

The “Age Groups Rock” team will be back. This time AJH will be running the 1st leg and I the second.

No monthly goals.

my motto for 2016

Happy Running! How did you January turn out?  Anything exciting planned for February?
