Weekly Wrap for 11.19.18-11.25.18 – Running Before and After the Turkey

ru

Back to guess where?  And my last Half Marathon for 2018!!

  • Monday – Though I was tired from the weekend, I do love my NYC runs. I started along the Hudson River

but for safety sake I ended up running on the city sidewalks. Crowded for sure but I got to see some the holiday decorations.

  • Tuesday – Today after work I took the subway to Central Park. I was hoping to run with Cari but she was stuck at work so I was solo. Not really. There were lots of runners in the park.

I walked back to my hotel. Again admiring the lights of the city at Christmastime.

  • Wednesday – Rest Day. Train home after work.
  • Thursday – Race Day – Troy Turkey Trot 5k. Well the night before there was a train derailment which led my train to be stuck an hour away. My hubby picked me up but I didn’t get home until after 11 pm. I also woke up to negative single digits with the windchill so I decided to skip the race.

It felt really strange not to race on Thanksgiving Day. I had done a turkey trot every year since 2009 (except 2012 when I was injured.) I waited for the temps to warm up to double digits and ran my own 5k. It was not fun but got it done.

Later in the day I ate back all the calories I burned and more at the family Thanksgiving dinner.

  • Friday – Rest Day and drive to Pelham with Alyssa. After checking into our hotel, we picked up our bibs and carb loaded at dinner.

Then we walked off our dinner at a nearby mall.

  • Saturday – Race Day. Pelham Half Marathon – the hilliest race ever. I mean I had problems even walking up the hills. But Alyssa and I survived and had fun. It is great local race. I even won my age group.

does it count if I was the only one in my AG?

  • Sunday – Rest Day and I deserved it!

This Coming Week –

  • Monday 3 miles??
  • Tuesday  3 miles, mall walk with BFF
  • Wednesday – train to NYC, 4 miles
  • Thursday3 miles (in NYC)
  • Friday – rest day, train home
  • Saturday Long Run with Sole Sisters (6 miles) or Jingle Bell 5k
  • Sunday – rest day and anniversary Mah Jongg dinner

Weekly Wrap for 11.12.18-11.18.18 – It’s beginning to look a lot like….

ru

New work travel location and a few cancelled running events due to an early winter.

  • Monday – Most of my running friends were off for the Veteran’s Day holiday and went for a morning run but I had to work so waited until after work. It was a slog but got it done.

at UAlbany where there are lights

  • Tuesday – Drive to LI for work. It was my first time going to this location (even though it’s where I grew up.) I had no idea where to run but it didn’t matter because it was raining. But then it stopped and it was still light so I headed to Eisenhower Park hoping to find a route to run on. And I did.

  • Wednesday – After work, I headed back to Eisenhower Park but just for a short walk. It was freezing and I had connected with two friends from high school with whom I would be having dinner. No time for a run but had a fun evening.

two of my best friends from junior high & high school – and yes, they’re twins

  • Thursday – Well almost another Rest Day. I planned to run on the treadmill before work but bailed. After work, I had to tackle the long slow drive home from LI. It was forecast to rain but it turned out to be a blizzard so I spent an extra night there. And guess what? I actually ran on the hotel treadmill. Hated every second but got it done.

  • Friday – Rest Day. Today I made the long drive home. No time to run as I had a hair appointment after work and a race the next day.
  • Saturday – Race Day. But the Girls on the Run 5k got cancelled due to the weather. I had run this race before but it was in a new location. I basically was going to do the race to support this charity and to meet up with the STEM coaches and runners. I was thinking about not running it even before it was cancelled (too tired!!!). So instead I ran a leisurely long run with my Sole Sisters followed by brunch. Love my running friends ❤

at the Crossings where they shoveled the paths 🙂

Then it was date night with the hubby. Movie (Bohemian Rhapsody) and dinner.

  • Sunday – Today I was supposed do a fun run with friends.  It was called the Raffle Run and you run for an hour completing a one mile trail loop as many times as you can. Each time around, you earn a raffle ticket which is entered into a drawing to win a prize. This was cancelled as well. So instead I did errands, cleaning, packing and picked up by race packet for Thursday’s race.

I decided to downgrade from the 10k to the 5k. And my coach agreed.

This Coming Week –

  • Monday -train to NYC, 4 miles
  • Tuesday  3 miles (in NYC)
  • Wednesday – rest day, train home
  • ThursdayTurkey Trot 10K 5k, Thanksgiving dinner
  • Friday – rest day, drive to Pelham
  • Saturday Pelham Half Marathon
  • Sunday – rest day

Weekly Wrap for 11.5.18-11.11.18: NYC and a 15K

ru

Back to the Big Apple for work and a 15k race. A busy week, for sure!

  • Monday – Another Turkey Trot Training group run missed. It was raining and I am a weather wimp. Besides I still wasn’t feeling 100%.
  • Tuesday – Another rainy day. This weather is getting old but the rain did stop in time to squeeze in a run before tennis.  Due to the time change, the only place light enough to run is UAlbany. But I play tennis near Colonie Town Park so I rushed to try to get my run done before it got too dark. And I did. Mostly.

  • Wednesday – Off to NYC by train for work.  After set-up in Queens, I made it out for a run.  Lucky for me, NYC has lights for those working runners. I took the subway to Central Park and ran there. I wished, however, that I could have enjoyed the fall foliage in the daylight. But it was in the 60s so grateful for the warm temps.

  • Thursday – Another work day in NYC, Tonight I ran along the Hudson River.  And yes, it was lit up there too. Not as warm as the day before but not bad and warmer along the river than in the city. (Strange?)

  • Friday – Back home by train.  No time to run but it was raining anyway.
  • Saturday – I spent the day with my mentee Amanda and her two sons.  It had snowed and we froze but they had fun so it was worth it.

  • SundayRace Day. Today I ran the Stockade-athon 15k.  It was my 6th time running it and it’s always a fun time because of all the familiar faces you run into. I was really really tired and I was planning to run the race as a training run for my upcoming half.  The cold temps and the wind kept me moving and I ended up with a PR!!

This Coming Week –

  • Monday Turkey Trot Training Group?? Most likely a rest day or a local 3 miles
  • Tuesday drive to LI, miles (or a rest day because rain is predicted)
  • Wednesday – work in LI, 4 miles
  • Thursday -rest day, drive home
  • Friday – rest day, hair appt, mah jongg
  • SaturdayGirls on the Run 5K
  • Sunday – Turkey RaffAL fun run – 5 miles

Weekly Wrap for 10:29.18-11.4.18: On the Road Again

ru

Back to traveling for work…every week until Christmas (except one jury duty week).

  • Monday – I had planned to go to a Turkey Trot Training group run but being away for the weekend, I had so much to do.  So I ran locally (after the rain finally stopped) and before darkness set in.

  • Tuesday – Long drive to Rochester. I had plans to set up and then go for a run on the Erie Canal. But they messed up the dates and I had to train TODAY. By the time I was done and set up, it was too dark and late to run 😦
  • Wednesday – Work day in Rochester and due to the mix up, I had to drive home rather than stay over night. I wanted to squeeze in a run but it was raining.
  • Thursday – Home a day early so I was able to run locally. 2 Sole Sisters met me at UAlbany so that was fun. Then I went out for drinks (& dinner) and that was even more fun.

  • Friday – Due to missing several runs this week and the impending rain forecast, I decided to go for a quick run on the rail trail before evening with my mah jongg buddies.

60s & 99% humidity = skirt weather

  • Saturday –Long Run and Brunch Day with the Sole Sisters cancelled due to RAIN!!! Instead I (stupidly) got a flu and shingles shot at the same time. Ouch!
  • Sunday – Re-scheduled long run. I ran 2 miles to carpool with Barbara and then met the rest of the Sole Sisters at the Corning Bike Path. I had hoped to run 9-10 more miles. But my legs, hips, back ached with every step. I could not even lift my left arm. I struggled and got through 8 miles thanks to Alyssa. Brunch made me feel a little better and then I walked 2 miles home. I get round 2 of the shingles vaccine in 2 mos. I will make sure I don’t do it a day before a long run or race.

oops – missed Jeri for the pic

This Coming Week –

  • Monday – Turkey Trot Training Group?? Most likely a rest day
  • Tuesday – 3 miles, tennis sub, rain forecast so maybe another rest day
  • Wednesday – train to NYC for work, 4 miles
  • Thursday3 miles (in NYC)
  • Friday – rest day, train home
  • Saturday – rest day, day with my mentee and her 2 sons
  • SundayStockade-athon 15K Race

Weekly Wrap for 10.22.18-10.28.19: There’s No Place Like Home

ru

Sleeping at home all week (until Saturday). What a novelty!!  I had to enjoy it because I will be traveling for work every week (except my jury duty week) until Christmas.

  • Monday – Finally I was home so I was able to go to a Turkey Trot Training group run. I hadn’t been in a month. But I had a cold and felt like crap. And when I went to change into my running clothes, I realized that I had packed only one running shoe. The training group run was not meant to be. So I went home and decided to get my other shoe and run locally. The awesome view of the moon was worth it. That and the wonton soup I stopped to get.

  • Tuesday – I was scheduled to sub in tennis but managed to squeeze in a short run before. The day before my cold seemed better while I was running. Not so today. I struggled. But at least the weather was perfect.

they say “Starve a fever. Feed a cold.” So I did (with ice cream)

  • Wednesday – Rest day trying to get rid of this damn cold and since I had planned a dinner out with my tennis friends.
  • Thursday –  Back with a COLD windy run at UAlbany with 2 Sole Sisters and meeting up with my BFF to walk around the mall and catch up on things.

  • Friday – Rest Day. Packing and Mah Jongg.
  • Saturday –  The plan was a 5 mile run with friends before I headed off by bus to NYC. But I bailed. The forecast was for cold rain so I slept in. After I arrived in the city (in the rain), checked into my hotel, I went to NYC Run Center to pick up my bib (in the RAIN) for the next day’s race, and then went to a movie (A Star is Born – go see it!!!!!!!!!)
  • Sunday – Race Day – Poland Spring Marathon Kick Off race. A 5 miler around Central Park. It was cold and hilly but fun.

Not close to a PR but 2nd in my age group. Happy about that.

After the race, I walked more than 30 blocks back to my hotel since I had some time. Afterward, I met my college friends for lunch and then my tennis friends to see Pretty Women on Broadway. Then we all took the train home. Yes I pack a lot stuff into one day.

This Coming Week –

  • Monday 3 miles (Turkey Trot Training Group)?? or 5 miles local
  • Tuesday drive to Rochester for work, 3 miles
  • Wednesday – 3 miles in Rochester
  • Thursday – rest day, drive home

Weekly Wrap for 10.15.18-10.21.18 – I’m Back and Jet Lagged

ru

Traveling is great but it’s tough getting back in a routine.

  • Monday – My last day in Paris. I was wondering whether my legs would be tired but they felt as fresh as a daisy. So I went for a run in the same park as my first Paris run with Karen but in a different part of Bois de Vincennes.

We spent the rest of the day outside of Paris in Saint Germain en Laye. (Since I’ve been to Paris many times before, I tried to do different non touristy things on this trip.) It was fabulous.

Ended my trip with a delicious dinner and a walk down the Champs Elysées.

  • Tuesday – Rest day. Shuttle, plane, and 3 trains home. No problems…arrived home safely!
  • Wednesday – Back at work and having trouble adjusting to the 6 hour difference in time. it was raining but then it stopped so I thought Id go for a run.  Temperature drop and wind… I thought that I could run in a long sleeved shirt and capris and would warm up as I ran.  Nope… in the 40s but felt like 30s. Quit after one mile. Brrrrrr.
  • Thursday – So today, I packed tights and a jacket. I was determined to not let the weather stop me from running.

  • Friday – Rest Day cuz there was unpacking, laundry and mah jongg to squeeze into the evening.
  • Saturday – Long Run with my “Sole Sisters.” With a half marathon coming up, I wanted to run  9 or 10 miles. The fall temps were perfect as was the company (esp. breakfast afterwards).

  • Sunday – Today I drove 3 hours with my stepson & his girl friend to go to my future daughter-in-law’s bridal shower.  I am so excited for this wedding in March.

This Coming Week –

  • Monday 3 miles (Turkey Trot Training Group)
  • Tuesday  3 miles, tennis sub
  • Wednesday – rest day, dinner out with tennis pals
  • Thursday4 miles. mall walk with my BFF
  • Friday – rest day, mah jongg chez moi
  • Saturday4 miles (if time), bus to NYC
  • Sunday – Poland Spring 5m Race, lunch with friends, Broadway Show, train home

Weekly Wrap for 10.8.18-10.14.18: Vive La France

ru

I spent last week vacationing in France.  The purpose was two-fold:  to accompany my friend Lisa in visiting her old friends who lived in the Bordeaux region and to run a race in Paris. Yes, both were accomplished,

Last week

  • Monday – Though probably jet-lagged, I had decided that although Karen was no longer able to race with me, I wanted to meet up with her and possibly run with her. She chose Bois de Vincennes which was only a few metro stops from my hotel.  The run was leisurely and it was great to see her again.

Later that day, Lisa & I took the train to Bordeaux where Chantal met us and we rented a car and drove to her home in Sanguinet.

  • Tuesday – My first day in Sanguinet. So of course I had to go for a run. The house where I am staying is a mile from a huge lake. I ran there with no problem. But got lost on the way home. Good thing I speak French fluently and I was able to get directions back home.

We spent the rest of the driving around and getting lost but I did get to see the Atlantic and walk around the town of Biscarrosse. On the way home, we stopped so I could climb the famous Dunes of Pyla. It was one of my favorite activities of the trip.

  • Wednesday- I ran again to the lake and did not get lost this time but ran along a different trail and fell. No injury so all was good.

Today we drove to Arcachon and then took a boat to Cap Ferret. We had oysters (the specialty there) and took a boat tour around the Cap and a train ride to the ocean and back.

  • Thursday – One last run in Sanguinet. Instead of my lake run, I just ran around the neighborhoods. No falls and no getting lost. 😀

Today was a rainy day so we took a train to the city of Bordeaux and took a few bus tours of city and a wine tasting boat ride on the Garonne river. Such a beautiful place.

  • Friday – Rest day. We drove to Bordeaux to return our rental car. After one last wander around the city and a lunch with Chantal, we took the train back to Paris.

We stayed in the same hotel as our first night of the trip. As soon as we checked in, I headed out on the metro to get my race packet. It was a perfect time to visit the expo since it was near closing and not too crowded.

  • Saturday – Another rest day. Instead I put in over 12 miles walking. I took a long walk on the above ground walkway where runners go. In the afternoon, we took a BatoBus on the Seine river. This ride allows you to get in and off the boat so we did at the Jardin des Plantes and Tuileries.

  • Sunday – Race Day. I finished the 20km de Paris on a very warm sunny day. It was much harder than I expected but I loved the race. I am happy that I was able to take it slow and enjoy the whole experience.

We celebrated with dinner and walk around the Latin Quarter.

This Coming Week –

  • Monday 4 miles (in Paris)
  • Tuesday  rest day, fly to JFK, train home
  • Wednesday –  3 miles
  • Thursday4 miles
  • Friday – rest day, mah jongg
  • Saturday10 miles, Ellms Family farm with mentee & sons
  • Sunday – rest day, bridal shower for future daughter-in-law (in MA)

Weekly Wrap for 10.1.18-10.7.18: Packing My Bags

ru

So I unpacked my bags from my trip to NYC, packed my bags to go to Liverpool for work, unpacked those bags and then packed AGAIN to go on my big trip to France.

  • Monday – My Turkey Trot Training Group run (that I missed last Mon and will miss the next two Mondays) was scheduled for tonight. But it was raining and I wanted to upgrade my phone (before my trip) so I bailed and instead walked around the mall with my BFF.
  • Tuesday – Another rainy day. I drove to Liverpool for work and the rain stopped when I got there. So I went for a run. It was a strugglefest – I was too tired…too hungry… and it was too HUMID (96%) and I was overdressed.

Onondaga Lake (East side)

It was still too early for dinner so I decided to explore and I finally found a way to the other side of the lake.

As soon as I got in my car, it started to rain again. Phew!

  • Wednesday – Finally a day without rain. As usual, I decided to squeeze in a short run before driving home. What a difference a day made. Less humidity and a new route – the west side of lake. I can’t believe it took me so long to find this trail. I loved it!!

Onondaga Lake – west side

  • Thursday – Rest day because I needed a haircut before my trip.
  • Friday – Only a short run after work because I needed to PACK for a my trip to France. I even skipped mah jongg.
  • Saturday – A Sole Sisters 8 mile run before a drive to JFK airport and a long flight to Paris.
  • Sunday – We arrived in Paris…Jet Lagged but excited. A rainy, cloudy day so I dragged myself to visit the Fondation Luis Vuitton, had out first dinner in Paris and then night view of the Eiffel Tower.  Great way to start a vacation.

This Coming Week –

  • Monday 3 miles (in Paris hopefully with Karen), train to Sanguinet
  • Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday  3-4 miles (in Sanguinet and the surrounding area. Optimistic about getting in a run each day…)
  • Friday – rest day, train to Paris
  • Saturday – rest day, pick up race packet
  • SundayLes 20km de Paris race

Weekly Wrap for 9.24.18-9.30.18 – Recovery Week

ru

Post Race depression with a trip to Liverpool for work and another trip to NYC for a re-scheduled 5k.

  • Monday – I was surprised that my legs were not tired but my back was real achy.  Took a slow run after arriving in Liverpool.

the sun was nice but boy was it windy

  • Tuesday – It rained all  day but stopped by the time I was done with work.  My lingering cold made me want to skip my run but again rain was predicted the next day too so I decided to seek out a new route.  I entered Onondaga Lake State Park at a different entrance and ran from the opposite direction.

saw a red-tailed hawk and Christmas decorations but didn’t have enough energy to get my my planned 4 miles in (even with walking)

  • Wednesday – I decided on a rest day because it was raining but then it stopped so I decided to finish yesterday’s run and then drive home…in the rain (it started to rain again once I finished my short run.)

  • Thursday – Today was a rest day. Still hadn’t had time to unpack from trip to Montreal or my trip to Liverpool and then I had to re-pack for my short trip to NYC the following day…. Oy!
  • Friday – Rest day again since I had to hop the bus after work to get to NYC.  I headed right to my hotel (I still had my bib from when the race was cancelled.)
  • Saturday – Race Day.  Governors Island 5K –This time thunderstorms were not predicted and my hotel was close enough to walk to the ferry. It turned out to be a beautiful day to run and the race was so much fun. I got to spend a lot time in the island (in the sunshine) and even place FIRST in my age group.

might have had a 5K PR if I tried – tied my Gun time one with this Chip timed one – a big surprise!!!!

After the race, I headed back to Manhattan, checked out of my hotel and met Cari to stroll around the Village. We spent a few hours together and it was so nice to have the company.

met at Union Sq, walked around Washington Sq, visited Jefferson Market Library, AIDS Memorial and more…

Still had a few hours to kill before my bus home so I took in a movie (Crazy Rich Asians 🙂 )

  • Sunday – Still needed a long run for the weekend (another big race in 2 weeks!) so three of my running friends agreed to meet me.

Only had enough time for 7.. .it was nice catching up with Barbara & running part of the miles with Sherry. First time in capris – 40s at the start!! Is Fall here to stay?

Of course, It was also Boating Sunday.  Sadly, since I am away the next two weekends, this was our LAST time on the lake.  We went for a ride and then had lunch with friends.

By Bye Lake George. See you next May!

This Coming Week –

  • Monday – rest day (probably skipping my Training Group run)
  • Tuesday   drive to Liverpool for work, 4 miles
  • Wednesday – 2 miles (in Liverpool), drive home
  • Thursday -rest day, hair appt
  • Friday –  3 miles, PACK
  • Saturday 8 miles, drive to JFK and fly to Paris

Weekly Wrap for 9.17.18-9.23.18: Race Time!!

ru

An exciting week because I did not have to travel except for going to Montreal for my big race(s).

  • Monday – FOMO had me signing up for the Troy Turkey Trot Training Challenge. I cannot go every Monday (due to work) and will probably never go to the Saturday runs but I enjoy the drills when I do go and love my running pals. Last night was the first night and though it was humid and the run hilly. I loved it!!

  • Tuesday – I got scheduled to sub on my former tennis contract. I was hoping to also get in a short run in before (if the rain stopped.) Holy heat and humidity but I did get in a short one at the town park but I was as wet as if it rained (from sweat.)

  • Wednesday – Rest day due to my monthly tennis ladies meet up (of course, the weather was perfect for running.) This month we went to the movies followed by dinner. As usual, lots of laughs.  Love these ladies!!

  • Thursday – Last run before my mini race-cation to Montreal and then rushed home to pack.

the uAlbany loop

  • Friday – Drive with 3 of my running buds to Montreal. No major problems besides the torrendous rain and getting lost LOL. We checked into the hotel, visited the expo and walked to Old City to have dinner. More rain so we ubered back to the hotel.
  • Saturday – I signed up for the 5k today and my roomie signed up for the 10k. Mine started at 8 am and hers at 8:30. But we walked to the start together.  The weather was cool and absolutely perfect.  I had planned to walk the 5k but instead I ran it slowly and took in the sights.  The best way to run a race in a new city. I need to do this more often,

After I was done, we all got to cheer my roomie in.  The rest of the day was spend having lunch, walking around town and then carb-loading in the evening with the whole group to get ready for big one.

  • SundayRace Day!! Another perfect weather day.  We were all so excited to run this race.  Unfortunately, the weather and friends were the only good things I could say about this race. But Half Marathon #32 is done.  I actually won 2nd in my age group but was too tired to pick up my award.

Afterward, we had a delicious lunch in the Old City and then drove home. Another short race-cation has come to an end. And it was a fun one (even though the race experience was not what we hoped.)

This Coming Week –

  • Monday –  drive to Liverpool for work, 3 recovery miles.
  • Tuesday   3 miles, Liverpool
  • Wednesday – rest day, drive home
  • Thursday4 miles
  • Friday – rest day, bus to NYC
