Runfessions for August ’22

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1.  I RUNfess…

Sometimes I double-book myself.  Well, the weekend of Sept 10-11, I may have triple booked myself.

I registered for a 5k on Sept. 10 that I run every year.

My good college friend invited to her house in RI because there is a race there on Sept. 11. Of course, I said “Sure, why not?”

I ran the half several years ago but I’m running a half the weekend before so I would only consider running the 5k.

2019

Finally, FOMO on this NYC event on Sept. 10.  I signed up since it is free.

2.  I RUNfess…

I skipped a 11 mile run in order to run a 5k.

After the race, I had planned to run 8 additional miles but instead:

No regrets…

And my running friend said that the “hay is in the barn.” Let’s hope so.

3.  I RUNfess…

After over 10 years of half marathon training, I’ve recently embraced the Galloway method.  Yup, run/walk intervals… and short intervals. And guess what? When I run this way, I feel like I could run forever and I’m not beat afterward.

4.  I RUNfess…

I only run intervals when I with run other runners.  Since I don’t wear a watch, I have to run whatever intervals, my running partner is running.

5.  I RUNfess…

Even though all my training long runs have been done using run/walk intervals, I don’t plan to run my half marathon that way next Saturday.

I will run my usual positive splits, just running fast and walking when too tired to run fast.

hope to be smiling as I was after this race last year

and one more for good measure:

I RUNfess…

Though I think Age Groups awards are important since they measure your achievement against those at your same age and I find it rude when runners don’t stick around to receive their awards, I did exactly that.

I knew that I had won my age group (and by ONE second) but I was anxious to get to the lake since my hubby was there patiently waiting. (For that reason, I usually run/race on Saturdays.)

the same race last year. where I won 2nd.

Happy Running! Anything to RUNfess this month?  Please share!

What Happened from Ages 60-64?

I borrowed this idea from Judy and Donna who recently turned 60 and 50, respectively.

But I am only discussing the first 5 years and then next year when I actually reach my decade year, I’ll talk about the last 5 years.

Most of you runners are younger than I am. So I hope I can be inspiration for you as you grow older and continue to run..

Age 60 (May 2013)

This year included a broken foot which kept me out of running for awhile…

good thing I kept those critches

But it also included some fun vacations and running experiences.

  • In October, I ran our local half marathon (the only one at that time) with friends.

we called ourselves “Strong Running Mamas”

  • In January, I went to visit a running friend to had moved to Palm Springs, CA.
20140111-205831.jpg

We ran a 10 mile race together

  • In March, the hubby and I travelled to Florida to visit boating friends who had moved to Flagler Beach.
lh5k

I ran a 5k in St Augustine

  • At the end of March, I visited Philadelphia with a new group of running friends.
20140331-090801.jpg

We ran the Love Run Half Marathon in the pouring rain

Age 61 (May 2014)

  • In June, I ran my first Adirondack Distance Run (10 hilly miles from Lake George Village to our marina)
20140622-171427-62067370.jpg

the hubby and boating friends met me at the finish line

  • That October, I visited a college friend who now lives in New Jersey.

and then ran the Perfect Ten Miler (still my 10m. PR)

  • At Thanksgiving, I ran my first Troy Turkey Trot, (he most popular local Thanksgiving race.)
IMG_4380

it still remains my 10k PR

  • In January, I visited friends who lived on the East coast of Florida for the first time. Of course, the vacation included a race.

  • In March, I returned to Palm Springs (but missed the race due to a cancelled flight).  Instead Mary and I  just ran together in the desert on the beautiful trails…

  • In April, I was one of a small group of bloggers named as a Skirt Sports Ambassador Captain. So from this moment on, you’d only see me wearing Skirt Sports skirts (and all year round.) Yes, they’re comfortable but more importantly, I met some awesome runners  because of my connection with this product.

Elizabeth in NYC (2/18)

  • Also in April, I again visited my college friend in NJ.

before the Asbury Park Half Marathon

Age 62 (May 2015)

  • I finally ran a race on my actual birthday.

  • At the end of the month, I shared a marathon with a blogger friend from VT.

I ran the first half

  • In June of that year, I ran the first annual Walkway Half Marathon (over the longest pedestrian bridge).

  • In October, I ran my first Rock N Roll race.

  • The day before the NYC Marathon, I ran a 5k.

  • In December, I continued my winter East coast trips to Florida.

ran a half and got champagne at the end 🙂

  • Then in February, I visited friends on the West coat of Florida and ran a half marathon in Sarasota.

yes, it was cold!!

Age 63 – May 2016

  • In May, I ran the first 5k dedicated to a runner who died from a drug overdose (who ran with STEM, a group of domestic violence survivors).

first annual Summer Smith Memorial 5k

  • At the end of the month, I ran the 2nd half of the Vermont City Marathon (that got cancelled while I was running it due to heat.)

again with Andrea

  • In June, I took a Running Tour in NYC with Judy.

  • In August, I raced a train (and didn’t beat it. LOL)

  • In November, I ran the Dash to the Finish 5k in NYC for the 2nd time but this time, with my Russian friend Anna (and her 2 friends.)

  • In December, I ran a half marathon with fellow bloggers.

in Panama City Beach, FL

  • In April, I ran my first half marathon in Central Park, NYC.

  • In May during my annual tennis vacation, I ran a 5k there for the first time..

in Naples, FL

Age 64 – May 2017

  • In May, I ran the Steel Rail Half Marathon in MA for first time and it still remains my half marathon PR.

  • In July, I ran my first of many evening 5ks in Brooklyn, NY.

  • In October, I participated in the first race-cation for a newly formed running group (now called “Sole Sisters”)

Most of us  have continued our race-cations annually

  • In November, I travelled to Vegas for another blogger meet-up.

Age 65 – May 2018

Sorry, but you’ll have to wait to hear about the next 5 years.

*****************

As you may have noticed, since this is labelled as a “running” blog, I chose not to include the other stuff in my life. Yes, there was family drama, deaths of family and friends, loss of pets, loss of a job. etc. My life is far from sunshine and roses.

Fortunately I discovered running (and racing) and it has brought a lot of joy to my life (as mentioned above).

Happy Running!  Do you have a milestone birthday coming up?  If so, what has been the “running” highlight of the last decade? Please share.

It seemed like half marathon training just started and now, it’s only TWO weeks until my first fall half marathon on Labor weekend.

How did that happen? Where did the summer go??

Am I ready?

Let's Run Girls - Groups | Facebook

Yes, that pretty much sums it up.  Maybe we will train seriously for the next one in Maine on October 2!

Last Week:

  • Sunday – Race Day and Boating Sunday.

I started the day with a 5k and the weather was perfect (I was not perfect but still won 1st in my age group.)

met up with friends that I don’t see often so I’ll call it a win

The rest of the day was again spent on the lake… relaxing.

in my orange chair with a book, a drink and a water view…

  • Monday – I had skipped my 11 Long mile run in favor of a 5k race with old friends. So before meeting running friends (on a day off) for a hike, I got there early and ran 8 miles.

I normally don’t enjoy running alone but it was nice to run in a different place – one where I used to run but hadn’t in awhile.

Our first 3 mile walk was at Peebles Island State Park.

lots of interesting sights (and conversation)

Then we had a lovely lunch followed by a 4 mile trail walk.

along the old Champlain canal

It turned out to be a very warm day so we had to end it with ice cream.

  • Tuesday – Rest Day!  But I did meet friend after work for a walk on the rail trail.

And then my BFF for walk #2 around an outdoor mall.

  • Wednesday – Back out there for a pre-work run in the neighborhood.

I woke up to rain and so I went back to bed. Then I woke up and it was NOT raining. I quickly got dressed and headed out the door.

the temps were nice but not the humidity! If you look closely you’d see that my shirt was on backwards. lol

I made the right decision since it was pouring by the time I finished work.

My plans to re-visit the sunflower fields got postponed. The colored ones were supposed have bloomed too.

hope to get there this weekend.

  • Thursday – Another early morning run… in my foggy neighborhood.

a pink kind of morning and another humid one

After work, we met for an ARE-sponsored trail run at Thacher Park.

we got a little lost (which is par for us) but had fun. The views were great!!

  • Friday – Another Rest Day. Busy work day but mah jongg in the evening to unwind.
  • SaturdayLong Run Saturday. 12 miles!!  And I did it thanks for the help of my awesome friends!

I also took a long ride back to the sunflower field.

in love with these colored sunflowers!!

And then I went out to dinner with friends of a friend.  The guy is from France (the brother of the lady I stayed with in Sanguinet) and used to also be a marathon runner.

  • Sunday – Boating Sunday.

Another warm sunny day for relaxing and floating and reading…

This Coming Week on the Run–

  • Monday – DAY OFF – hike
  • Tuesday – run, walk after work
  • Wednesday – run, walk after work
  • Thursday – OFF – rest day, day at the race track
  • Friday – rest day, mah jongg chez moi
  • Saturday Long Run Saturday (Taper Time), running friends mimosa brunch
  • Sunday –  Boating Sunday

FFF: Quotes by Joe Henderson

6373214

Just one of his books.

I was looking for motivational quotes and I stumbled upon Joe Henderson’s.

The quotes below are both intriguing and motivational:

1.

2.

3. The hours, minutes and seconds stand as visible reminders that your effort put them all there. Preserve until your next run, when the watch lets you see how Impermanent your efforts are.

4.  A course never quite looks the same way twice. The combinations of weather, season, light, feelings and thoughts that you find there are ever-changing.

5. Where did you run today? Now there’s a question you don’t often hear.

And one more for good measure:

The challenge in running is not to aim at doing things no one has done but to keep doing things everyone could do – but most never will.

Happy Running? Ever hear of Joe Henderson?  What is your favorite running quote? Please share.

2022 Run For the Roses 5K Race Recap

AUGUST 14, 2022 – 9:00 AM

In the summertime, I try to do my long runs on Saturday and then go boating on Sundays.

But last summer, I got a FB message about this race from a runner (Lisa) who lives in Indiana and was part of a race-cation in 2014 that I participated in (with her high school classmates, Heidi and Andrea, who lives in VT) She was going to be in town and wanted all of us to race together again.

How could I refuse?

The event consisted of a USATF sanctioned 5K foot race, a 2.5 mile guided nature walk, and children’s 1 Mile Fun Run, at Grafton Lakes State Park.

The 5K race was advertised as “challenging but offering runners of all skill levels a beautiful race course through scenic Grafton Lakes State Park, and the surrounding area.” All participants also received a tee-shirt,  book, and a rose. The proceeds form the race go to support the Grafton Community Library.

And so without a second thought, I signed up.

I had never heard of this race but I knew that the area was scenic and I had hiked there in the winter.

As I always do, I scoured the Internet for a review of this race and I found one from someone I actually knew.  This what she started her race recap with: The race director came over to get things going, and opened with “Welcome to the 31st Annual Run for the Roses! As you know, this is one of the toughest 5K courses in the area, so we’re really glad to have you all here today.”

Ok, then. So at least I was prepared beforehand for hills and lots of them. By prepared I mean that I knew about them a few days before.

Despite the challenging course, I had so much fun hanging out with these ladies.

I even won an age group award.

So guess what?

I signed up again this year for this 5k race.  Both Heidi and Andrea said that they would be there too..

Pre-Race Activities and Preparations:

Outside of two July races (July 4 & July 6), I have done zero speed work.  In some ways 5ks are harder than half marathons. You feel like you should run fast and before you get warmed up, it’s over. To make things were even more challenging, I never train/run on hills.

The week going into the race had me running 3 times. This summer, the temps have been incredibly hot and humid.  Runs as a result have been SLOOOW!!

(Looks like a “pink” week…)

The day before the race, I just went for a walk with my running friends and did errands and gardening.

Normally I would have said the weather was too warm for a great race but compared to past weekends, it seemed cool.

No matter what the temps, summer race dressing is fairly simple – tank, skirt, cap, sunglasses.

decided on teal blue for a change

Race Day:

I had my oatmeal and coffee and left early. Although I went there last year, I was not very familiar with the area. Happily, I noticed that it was only in the 50s when I left at 7:30 am.

This park has lots of trails and places to swim and kayak.

I had no problems finding the race location so I had arrived early. (There is an admission fee to this park but if you were racing, it was FREE!)

I picked up my shirt and bib and waited around for my friends.

in addition to a tech shirt, you picked out a library book

Heidi arrived first and then Andrea.. We chatted and chatted.

obligatory pre-race pic

I also recognized a few runners that I knew. Many were from the STEM group or the Freihofer Training Challenge.

Then I bumped in my good friend Sue.

turned out that she knew Andrea, too.

Soon it was time to head toward the start line.

no teletubbies this year but a guy dressed up as a baby

For some reason, they delayed the race for 10 minutes.  More time to chat with other runners that I knew.

twinning!

As I mentioned, I knew that it was a looped course and after the first mile, it was mostly uphill.

according to my Garmin

I postponed my long run for this 5k so I planned to at least enjoy the race.  You cannot expect miracles when you only run on flat routes and use very short run intervals for your runs. I had a funny feeling that I would be walking a lot of the course.

At least the weather was in my favor.

Mile 1

The race was not chip timed so if I really cared, I would have stood close to the starting line (but I didn’t.)

We started with a slight uphill on the main road leading into the park. Then there was a gradual downhill.

I also tried to pick up the pace since I figured this was the only mile that I would not be walking (and I was right.)  It was breezy by the lake but out on the road, there was no shade and warmer than I expected.

Looking back at this mile, I obviously ran it too fast. But at the time, I felt good (until I didn’t.)

Mile 2

There was a water stop at the beginning of this mile and a sprinkler (yay). I was not expecting water but it was welcome. I was getting warm (Shouldn’t have changed out of my tank.)

The course shifted to flat and then about a quarter mile later, started heading uphill. And yes, I had to walk. And walk and walk.

Mile 3- 3.1

There was a second water stop here so I grabbed some and walked even longer.

After turning left around mile 2.1 (yup, 1.5 to 2.1 was pure uphill), we had a short little downhill.

Then it was a pure uphill for the next 0.6, with no breaks at all.

I walked several times during the last 2 miles…not sure how many times.  But a lot.  (Remember I’m used to intervals now.)

Around mile 2.7, we turned right to get back on the main road that the race had started on.

The uphill continued until 2.9, and then we got a short little downhill (30 feet of drop) before the course flattened out to the finish.

Unfortunately, while the final loop around to the finish was flat, it felt long – we crossed under the start banner and then made a huge circle around the parking lot.

We made the two right hand turns to reverse direction and finally I saw the finish line ahead of me.

I did my best to sprint through the finish line but the hills had sapped much of my energy.

But I saw on the clock that I was finishing under 30 minutes so I was thrilled.

As soon as you crossed the finish line, they handed you a rose. Very sweet.

Post Race Activities:

I grabbed some water, iced tea, fruit and cookies while waiting my friends to finish.

here comes Andrea

Soon they posted the results.  Both Andrea and I won age group awards.

Note that I won by only ONE second!!

I couldn’t stick around for the awards. My hubby texted me that he was already on his way to the lake.  So my fiend, Sue, said she would get my award.

Additional Race Reflections:

I would never have picked this race on my own. But I really enjoyed the experience. I feel fortunate to be part of these women’s “tribe.” As Andrea put it: “There are no accidents nor coincidences in life. Everything happens for a reason – so glad our universes collided!” So true.

And it was a lovely small town race with about 120 runners. Yes, it was challenging but maybe not so much if I actually trained for a 5k.

But I didn’t overdo and my legs was able to do my long run the next day.

8 miles on my Monday off

Maybe next year, I will actually bring my bathing suit and SUP and enjoy the lake after the race. And even convince some of my local running friends to join me.

This year, I joined my hubby on our boat on Lake George.

Positives:

  • Friends Reunion
  • Lots of familiar faces
  • Nice swag – tech shirt, book, a rose
  • location- pretty park with trails and a lake
  • Mile markers
  • Volunteer calling out times at each mile
  • Two water stops
  • Real bathrooms and showers
  • Free admission to the park

Negatives:

  • the HILLS
  • Gun timed

Would I recommend this race?

Yes. It was well organized. I’ll probably run it again next year.

Final Stats:

still Queen of the positive splits!

My finish time was about the same as the last 5k that I ran in July (29:11.) So I was not disappointed. And it was a little faster than on the same course last year (29:27.) Obviously if I do not train, I can’t expect those faster times.  But right now, I am content just to be out there running.

Weekly Run Down for 8.7.22-8.14.22: A Brief Cool Down…

Yes.  Heat, humidity to start the week but then we got a break…

Running continued but with an added 5k thrown into the mix.

Last Week:

  • Sunday – Boating Sunday.

An oppressively hot day. Luckily I had lake breezes and shade (and no rain.)

  • Monday – It was #nevermissamonday but I stayed in bed instead of running. No regrets.

I had the day off (as I do every other Monday) and a running friend suggested a day at Emerald Lake in VT.  So I grabbed my SUP and we had a wonderful time. A long drive but so worth it. (And again missed the rain.)

  • Tuesday –  Back to work and I did drag myself out of bed early to get my run done. But Holy Humidity!!!

It warmed up but I think the humidity decreased.  Anyway, it felt that way during my post-work walk with a friend.

  • Wednesday – Day 2 of the early morning runs. Whoa! About 10 degrees cooler than the previous morning! I’ll take it.

always taking different neighborhood routes and always looking for flowers…

I met my friend again for a post-work walk (but we went in the opposite direction.)

  • Thursday – Rest day because I had a trail run scheduled for the evening.  As usual, I met my running friends and we walked, chatted and had a blast.

love those cloud formations

  • Friday – Normally Friday is my rest day but since I had a race on Sunday, I would be taking Saturday off (which is ordinarily my long run day.)

I had more time so I drove for my early morning run.

why yes, I do match everything

  • Saturday – Long Run Saturday for everyone else but for me, it was just a walk and brunch.

long runs, short runs, walkers and bikers – all on the rail trail supporting each other… so fortunate to be part of this group. No one ever has to be alone!!

  • Sunday –  Race Day! I ran the Run for the Roses 5k for the 2nd time.  I met up with old friends and somewhat conquered the hills in Grafton Lake State Park.. (Recap on Tuesday…)

Sunday in the summer is for boating so I plan to join my hubby up at the lake for the rest of the day.

This Coming Week on the Run–

  • Monday – DAY OFF! Long Run, hike
  • Tuesday – rest day, walk
  • Wednesday – run

FFF: Who’s An Athena?

Ancient greek goddess athena cartoon. Ancient greek goddess athena, funny vector cartoon portrait of female deity of wisdom | CanStock

Athena was the goddess of battle strategy, and wisdom

A running friend mentioned to me recently that at a race, she registered as an Athena because she thought she had a better chance of placing.

Well it turned out that she didn’t but she would have done better just entering by her age.

The Athena division only takes into account your weight. (The male equivalent is Clydesdale.)

Do Sara and Dimity look overweight to you? They often enter races in the Athena division.

So obviously if you are tall, you can fit into this division and not be overweight.

The Athena division is only available in some marathons and triathlons. And many women do not want to be considered an Athena even if they do qualify.

The weight limit for an Athena according to what I’ve read varies from race to race but is usually between 140-160 lbs.

Ok, so if you’re 5 feet tall, you may be overweight but not if you’re 5’10!

The rationale supposedly is that it’s harder to run fast if you are carrying extra pounds.

But shouldn’t it be BMI not just the number on the scale?

What do you think?

1.Should this division be offered?

2. In ALL races or just certain types or distances, if it is offered?

3. If you qualified, would you sign up?

4. Should you have to weigh in before the race (to keep things honest)?

4.Does being overweight give you an unfair disadvantage in a race?

Happy Running! Have you ever run a race as an Athena? Please share!

TT: Places I have Run (S-Z)

Alphabet Challenge

S-Z

Originally Donna from Running to Travel the World posted this challenge.  I completed it twice:

But I changed it up the past two Tuesdays and chose those PLACES where I’ve raced or run (A-I and J-R). This is a continuation of those posts:

  • S – Sarasota, FL, Sanguinet, France and Saratoga Spring, NY

I love to visit Sarasota when I go to Naples, FL each May. However, I have also run two half marathons there in the winter.

Herald-Tribune staff photo by Dan Wagner - Yup, I am in the photo!!!

one of the highlights is running over the Ringling Bros. bridge

When I visited Paris several years, I also went to Sanguinet (small town on the west coast north of Burgundy). My travel companion had friends who lived there. Of course, I ran there every morning.

there was a lake nearby

I love to run in the Saratoga State Park and I’ve raced in this city many times too. It is famous for horse racing.

  • T – Troy, NY

Not too far from where I live and one of the largest Thanksgiving races is held here each year.

11986342_1192296570787072_4790322504906372402_n

running over the Collar City bridge

  • U –  Utica, NY

This city is famous for its summer 15k (The Boilermaker) and beer.  I was there my first summer of running for its 5k.

  • V – Vestal, NY and Vero Beach, FL.

I would have said Vermont but I already mentioned a race there.  Vestal is a small town is just north of Binghamton, NY and has a nice rail trail there.  I ran on it several times when I was there travelling for work.

Vero Beach is another place on the east coast of Florida where I ran a half marathon.

  • W – Waverly, RI and West Palm Beach, FL

One of my close college friends built a house nearby in RI so she talked me into visiting to kayak and to race.

who doesn’t love a race with ocean views?

I have quite a few friends who winter in the West Palm part of Florida (east cost). As a result, I try to visit them each winter and usually run a race while I’m there.

races along the ocean are my favorites

  • X – Nope.
  • Y Z??? NadaI guess I need to travel more (as a runner).

I’ve been to Yellowstone and Zion National Parks but again it was BEFORE I became a runner.

Happy Running! Ever run in any of these places? Please share.

Weekly Run Down for 7.31.22-8.7.22: The Heat is Back On…

After a brief reprieve from the heat and humidity, summer weather returned in full force this week.

Not much could be done but as they say “Just do it!” And that’s what I did.

Last Week:

  • Sunday – Boating Sunday!

Again I was treated to a gorgeous day for relaxing on the lake.

different dock at Red Rock Bay (Lake George)… same experience

Since my hubby had driven up the day before, we had two cars today.  That meant, I could stay later and do my own thing…

After he left, I walked around town admiring all the beautiful gardens.

Then I went for a few nature walks/hikes before heading home.

trails at the Sagamore followed by Up Yonda.

Of course, there was stop on the way at Martha’s for ice cream.

  • Monday – I really didn’t want to get up this morning to run but it was #nevermissamonday. As always, I was glad I did.

but holy humidity!!! Just chrysalis and bees today.

Having my run done before work allowed me to go for a leisurely walk on the rail trail with friends after work.

  • Tuesday – After a sleepless night, I was tired but I knew I HAD to run.

this run was dedicated to my sweet cat, Honey, who died the night before.

I do love all kinds of flowers but I really love sunflowers.  And I really needed a pick me up today!!

Two of the nearby fields did not plant this summer so I had to search out a new location.

And I found one!!  They are only open in the evenings which was perfect…Unfortunately my GPS did not take to the right location but a kind soul on the side of road directed me.  It was not free (however you got to cut your own flowers to bring home) and most of the fields had not bloomed yet.  (I plan a return visit in a few weeks.)

The flowers made me happy and it was definitely worth the trip!!

  • Wednesday – Yes, the third day in a row of getting up early to run. But again it freed up my evening for other things.

the bright sunshine was a killer today… those sunflowers are TALL…like my runfie?

My evening plans included dinner out with my former co-workers and walking pals.

  • Thursday – 100 degrees predicted for today!!! No running for me (since I don’t have access to a treadmill.)

Since I had to go into the office today, I did take a walk to the nearby Starbucks.

There were a few evening plans brewing – a group trail run for me and tennis for the hubby OR a Jimmy Buffet concert together.

It wasn’t the heat hat bothered me. It was the threat of thunderstorms (which may or may not materialize).

Well, we decided on the concert.  And it was the right decision.  While we were gone, there was a HUGE storm.  The power and internet went down. I wouldn’t have been able to go to the hike. My hubby’s tennis match was canceled.

The concert was awesome and NO RAIN!

The concert was held in Bethel, NY – the home of the famous Woodstock concert in 1969!!!

It was a very long drive (longer than I thought) and we got home at 1:30 am!!

  • Friday – Rest Day!! And a scheduled day off from work.

August 2021

I had planned (as I did last year) to visit a friend who was at a retreat on Lake George to hike and hang out on the lake.

As you can expect, I was very tired but my friend needed to get home and the weather was less than ideal so we decided to cancel.

I hate to waste a vacation day so I worked instead. (I’ll take another day off later in the month).

  • Saturday Long Run Saturday!

We decided to start early (to beat the heat) and then meet for brunch.  Thanks to my friends, I got 12 miles done on the rail trail.

it was humid and warm but running intervals (and with friends) made me feel like I could run forever

  • Sunday –  Boating Sunday!!

Ultimate Coffee Date for August ’22

It’s that time of the month…

Soleil Home™ Running Porcelain Mug - Run but First Coffee

time to join up with Coco & Deborah
for their ultimate coffee date.

1. Over coffee…

I’d tell you that it has even been too hot this summer for me to join my running groups and run after work.

Yup, I became a sunrise runner.

What about you?  Did the summer temps force you to see the sun rise?

2.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I did join the group trail runs each Thursday evening.  But I’m too nervous to run on them.  I (and my running friends) always brought up the rear and walked each one.

Do you run on trails often?

3.Over coffee/wine…

I’d tell you that so far I have been able to do more hiking since I have every other Monday off.

Have you been doing much hiking lately?

4.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I have NOT run a half marathon since May.  Remember I ran 6 half marathons the first 5 months of the year.

Don’t worry. I signed up for THREE this fall!!

    1. Race 4 the River – Sept 3
    2. Maine – Oct 2
    3. Upstate Classic – Nov. 20

Have you been taking a break from training this summer?  Have you signed up for any big races this fall?

5.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that if you are interested in the big NYC races, here are some important dates:

    • NYC Half Marathon – March 19, 2023 – Application and guaranteed-entry claim window: Mid-October 2022
    • Brooklyn Half Marathon  – May 20, 2023 – Application and guaranteed-entry claim window: Mid-December 2022
    • NYC Marathon – November 5, 2023 – Application and guaranteed-entry claim window: February 2023

So far, I am only definitely running the NYC Half.

United Airlines NYC Half-Marathon Race Results - New York, NY - 3/20/2022 - My BEST Runs - Worlds Best Road Races

Anyone planning to apply to run any of these NYC races?

*** Last but not least, thanks for all your kind words on FB and IG regarding the death of my cat, Honey.  Even losing an older cat is not easy. She was deaf and thin but still active with a hearty appetite. In fact, this week she ate a rabbit and the morning she died, a mouse. (I do think my younger 3 year old cat catches them.) My hubby thinks she died of old age but I kinda think she was poisoned.  Anyway, at least he found her dead on our deck, not I!!

Happy Running! What’s new with you?  Please share.
