TOLT: The Unemployment Post

thinking out loud

Since it is Thursday,  I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

Since June 10, this dark cloud (unemployment) has been hanging over my head. It’s on my mind.  Like 24 hours a day.

I’m not judging (I will read your blogs anyway) but I hate to write about personal things on my blog.  It’s a running blog and I think that’s what you expect to hear about.  So that’s what I like to write about.  My blog is where I can write about my races, my training and all that stuff that we, runners, worry and stress about….exercise, weight-loss, cross-training, speed, etc.

As I said, I am not judging –  many of you write about all kinds of personal stuff and I enjoy reading about that too.

So here’s how I can connect my current situation to running…

197274_10151484062329428_87357852_n

And no, I am NOT injured just jobless.

  • Unexpected or Could I have something?

One day, you are running and the next day, you are not.  Or maybe there were signs of an impending injury and you just ignored them.

One day, you have a job and then, you don’t.  In my case, I hadn’t a clue or did I?  Did I have the kind of job that would last forever?  10 years is a long time. But with technology, things do change. And teaching in a private school for years at a low salary and without a pension now doesn’t seem like a great idea.

  • Find alternative Activities

When you can’t run, you find other things to keep you busy.  None of which are as satisfying as running.  Depending on the severity of the injury, it may be reading, knitting, TV or it could be biking, swimming, yoga.

Without a job to go to, you have lots of free time to fill. So you run, walk, go to the gym and waste of a lot of time when you don’t have a schedule.  Especially if you are schedule-type of person. In other words, you have too much time.

  • Get lots of Advice

Yes, everyone is an expert.  Did you do this or use this or go to this?  PT, massages, chiropractors, stretching, strength training, rollers, sticks, etc. It’s great to have input but…

The same with being unemployed.  My friends mean well but enough of “have you tried?”, “have you looked into?”,  “have you gone to?”, have you talked to?” Yes, I  have!   I just want to hear “There’s a job for you here!”

  • Relive the Memories

When you are injured, you think about those races, fun runs and even the bad runs are memorable.  You look at your race photos and read your old blog posts. You realize how much running has added to your life.

Work wasn’t always fun but now you think about those parties, walks to Starbucks, fitness challenges and conversations in the hallways.

  • Miss your Friends

No meeting up with friends to run or meeting runners at races. I am lucky to have virtual friends but I would miss the face-to-face running chats.

Texts and emails are not the same as seeing your work friends everyday.

  • Uncertain Duration

Will it heal in several days or weeks or even months?  When will I be able to run?

When will I find a job?  How long will I be unemployed?

  • Uncertain Future

Will I run again?  Will I run long distances?  Will I run as fast?  My running may have to change.

Will I find a job?  Will it have benefits?  Will I earn enough money to support my family?  My life may have to change.

  • Have to be Optimistic

You can’t change the present.  Whatever happens, happens.

I and my family members are healthy.  There are worse things than unemployment.

So I’ll leave you with this wonderful quote (Thanks Karen):

When one door closesanother opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.  Alexander Graham Bell

Saratoga Springs 5K Race Recap

July 10, 2016 8:00 AM

This was an impromptu sign up.  Many of my races are.  I have not been motivated to run lately so I figured a race would get my running mojo going.

I also had a birthday party to go in Saratoga so I figured that I could run more, hang out and then change my clothes for the party.

Anyway, I did run the inaugural Saratoga Springs Half Marathon two years.  I hated the loop and didn’t even consider running that race again (even though my friend Alyssa was running it.)

sshm2

2014 – my least favorite half – almost passed out after…

The course is the same as the beginning of the half:

The 5K course starts in with a lap around the Peerless Pool Parking Lot, turns right on East West Road, and then right onto Geyser Loop Road. The course then turns left to run a lap around the SPAC Parking Lot and returning to Geyser Loop Road. The course finishes by turning right onto East West Road and finishing with a lap of the Peerless Pool Parking Lot.

Most of the runners were racing the half marathon which started at 7:30 am.  There was a very small 5k field. But I still needed to get there early in order to get parking even though the 5k didn’t start until 8 am.

Rain was predicted but when I got there, it wasn’t raining.  It was very humid and it looked like the rain may hold off.

img_0739

tech shirt – the same as the half marathoners

I bumped into my friend Tom and we took our same goofy picture.

We watched the half marathoners take off.  (I did see Alyssa and hugged her for good luck.)

img_0740

And then the rains came…in full force.

img_0742

We all huddled under shelter and didn’t want to leave.

Eventually, we had to move to the start line.

ss5k

Tom & I heading to the start

ss5k1

waiting to begin

And so we started in the pouring rain and ran around the grass (not fun and very shaky footing) and then through the finish line before we exited and ran around the Peerless Pool Parking Lot.

This part of the course was not the least bit interesting but with all the twists and turns, I at least tried to run the tangents to save time.

Next we ran on the park’s roads which were pretty and encountered the first hill.  I actually ran up most of it and didn’t walk until the first water stop around mile 1 1/4.

The we ran a lap around the SPAC Parking Lot which was again pretty boring.

Soon we were back on the scenic roads and I again walked at the second water stop around mile 2.

Mile 3 had the biggest hill.  My legs were tired so I walked, then ran a little and finished the hill walking. I wasn’t paying attention to my Garmin and was pretty sure that I was going to have a pretty rotten finish time but really didn’t care.

It was still raining but not as hard.

The course finally finished with another lap of the Peerless Pool Parking Lot before running on the grass to cross the finish line.

ss5k4

heading onto the grass toward the finish line

ss5k5

thumbs up for the end to a rainy race

I looked at the clock. But all I saw was the half marathon time.

img_0766

I got my medal (the same one the half marathoners get) and walked to see the results.  They print them out and you know right away if you won your age group and you pick up your award there.

img_0745

Believe or not, I won my age group.  (Well, not shocking really since this was a small race and many locals were running the Boilermaker or this half.) And my finish time was decent.  In fact, if I hadn’t walked 4 times, I may have PRed. (My current 5k PR is 27:11)

ss5k

img_0743

It doesn’t look it but I was drenched from head to toe

Tom won, as well.

At this point, it was raining harder than ever.  So I grabbed some food and my umbrella and headed back to my car.

There was no way that I was running anymore in the rain or waiting around. So I drove and by time I got home, it was sunny.  I tried to get in some more miles but it was so humid that I quit after 3 sluggish miles.

I showered and changed my clothes and drove back to Saratoga to a miniature golf party – lots of food and lots of fun. I even won second lowest score.

So another race has come and gone.  For some reason, I need to walk several times even during a 5k.  I never used to. Am I running too fast?  Am I just not fit enough?  Or is my age catching up with me?

Whatever the reason, I still enjoy the 5K race challenge. Besides, I don’t do any speed workouts so I should be happy with my not so speedy race results.

Splits:

mile 1 – 9:14
mile 2 – 9:22
mile 3 or so- 8:54 ( I ran the tangents & didn’t stop my watch right away)

Happy Running! Any races lately?  Do  you feel guilty if you walk during a race?

Monday Running Update

mon r u
Last Week:

  • Monday –  I drove up to Bolton Landing (on Lake George) today.  I managed to squeeze in a short run before everyone wanted to head out on the lake.

img_0590

We spent the whole day on the lake – at a dock on an island and then in the bay before heading back to barbecue at the marina and watch the fireworks.

img_0659

  • Tuesday –  While everyone had to drive home to go to work, I again decided to take advantage of my free time and stayed up at the lake. My legs were tired but I dragged myself for 3 slow miles.

img_0647

I managed to get a sub for tennis so stayed up on the lake and spent a relaxing day by myself- got in lots of walks, beach time and reading.

  • Wednesday – This morning I went for a hike up to the top of Thomas Mountain.  I had planned to repeat the hike I took last week, but accidentally took the blue trail instead of the orange one – a lot more challenging and a different view.
img_0707

I didn’t fall and so it was worth it for the new view but I took the orange trail down… didn’t want to push my luck

I had planned to meet Alyssa and Barbara for an ice cream run sponsored by Fleet Feet and Saucony so I headed home.

img_0705

It was very very hot and my run very very slow but the ice cream was GOOD.

  • Thursday – I played tennis in the am with the Troy Tennis Group and went out for dinner with an old friend. No running today.
img_0719

sorry I didn’t get a pic of the crepes with hazelnut sauce & bananas

  • Friday – Again I played tennis in the am on the courts near my house. Still incredibly hot. I planned on running after dinner and before my weekly mah jongg game but I waited too long and it started to pour.  Another no running day.
  • Saturday – This morning I actually got my run in before the rain.

img_0733

And I stopped off at the gym before heading to the grocery store.

img_0738

  • Sunday – Started off the day with a 5k race (I ran the half there 2 years ago). It was just raining or pouring the whole race.  Got a medal, tech shirt and a pint glass for 1st in my age group so all is good.

img_0754

When I got home, the rain had stopped. I was tired but managed a few more miles.

img_0753

Then headed back to Saratoga for  mini golf birthday party.

img_0764

18.5 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday -tennis AM, rest

Friday Five: Summer Food

Since it’s Friday, I’m linking up with three DC area bloggers Mar at Mar On the Run, Cynthia at You Signed Up For What?! and Courtney from Eat Pray Run, DC .  Anyone can join with their own Friday Five post (yes, it must be a Friday Five!!)  They encourage you to visit other blogs on the linkup, comment, share and engage!

My Friday Five topic is Favorite Summer Eats

Keep in mind that I don’t cook or bake much.

  1. Salads

Just buy a bag of lettuce, a cooked chicken, dressing and some fruit and voila.

img_0462

2. Fruit

Love summer fruit – cherries, watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries. etc.

3. Smoothies.

I used to buy these at Starbucks but now I make them – cocoa, banana, protein powder, almond milk…

img_0500

4. Barbecues

I only seem to enjoy hamburgers and hot dogs when they are on the grill.  Also love steaks, sausage, chicken. NOT A VEGETARIAN.

5. Ice Cream

This improves any summer day.

TOTR: Choosing Your Races

with Erika @ MCM Mama Runs,
Marcia @ Marcia’s Healthy Slice
and Patty @ My no-guilt life

This week’s topic is How Do You Choose Your Races?

I do run a lot of races but I do choose them carefully.  In fact, this blog is really helpful because I can read a review of a past race in order to decide if I want to run it again.  However, I do enjoy run new races each year, too.

So these are the things that influence my choice of race:

  • Who else is running it.

Yes, I succumb to peer pressure.  It’s more fun to run a race when you know someone else who is running it.

  • Distance

If there’s a 10k or a 15k around, I’ll run it because there aren’t that many.  Most races around here are 5ks. Sometimes I choose a 5k because I want to work on speed.  Sometimes I just want to have a short one so I can add on miles for a long training run.

  • The Course

I love a scenic course (especially with a water view).  I don’t really like hills (but I do run them)  I hate loops.

  • The Location

I like to stick to a 30 minute drive. In the summer, when there are so many choices, I often choose races that are north on the way to our boat.

  • Free Stuff like Swag, Awards or Post-Race Food

Who doesn’t like free stuff or bling?    And I am always hungry after a race.

Happy Running!  How do you choose your races?

Monday Running Update

mon r u
Last Week:

  • Monday –  I stayed up at Bolton Landing (on Lake George) today.  Started the day with a slow scenic 4 mile run.

waterlilies at the Sagamore – ❤

I had planned to do some hiking but it started to rain so I headed to the outlets.  Believe it or not, I didn’t buy a thing.

  • Tuesday –  Did some errands in the morning including an eye dr appt.

An impending storm cancelled tennis so I went for a walk and then to the gym.

  • Wednesday – Started the day with a run…solo. Decided on a road trip to Peebles Island and thoroughly enjoyed it.

For dinner I met my travel tennis friends at a new restaurant

  • Thursday – Morning tennis and then later ran with my new running friend.  The run was followed by a mall walk with my BFF.

She suggested the ice cream – Not me!

  • Friday – Again I played tennis in the am (with a different group). In the evening, I played maj jongg (which I hadn’t done in weeks) while watching the Olympic Trails on TV.

IMG_6210

  • Saturday – Planned on a long run and then a ride up to the lake but the hubby decided to stay home and I procrastinated until afternoon to run.

I ran my fastest mile ever (7:xx) to get to the bakery before it closed.

I begged and they opened the door & sold the only thing left – a strawberry muffin.

  • Sunday – This should have been a lake day because the weather was perfect but it wasn’t.  Instead I took a SUP lesson in the am with Judy. It was actually fun. I am as clumsy as I thought. I fell twice but the good news is that I stayed up over an hour and want to try it again.

Sorry no pictures of us standing on the boards – maybe next time.

In the afternoon, I went for a butterfly walk at the Albany Pinebush Preserve.  It was about 1 mile and we learned about the insects, birds and plants in this preserve.  I hope to go back and run on some of the trails. (There are 11.) I did see a lot of butterflies and I was amazed at how small they were.

These butterflies are an endangered species so it is rare to see them

18.5 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:

June Recap

So how did this month go (besides too fast)?

Weekday Runs:

Summer arrived.  It was warm most days and we had very little rain.  So I was able to run at least 3-4 times each week.

Long Runs:

There were NONE.  I ran races on the weekends. There were NO double-digits runs.  The longest were a 7 mile run and a 5 mile post 5k run.

Total Mileage:

I ran 76 miles this month – the lowest amount in many many months. But I wasn’t training for anything and it’s summer so I guess that’s ok.

jun16

Races:

I ran FOUR races this month – three 5Ks and a 10 miler.

I was generally happy with how they all went. I did not have PR goals and of course, they could have been faster.  I won age group awards in two of the 5ks. The Adirondack Distance Run was my 2nd fastest 10 mile race (out of 6).

Cross Training:

Now that I am unemployed, I have been able to play A LOT of tennis – 3-4 times a week. I have met new people and I have enjoyed it.

I DID NOT go to a single yoga class!! Someday I will do, I promise.

lheartspaceogo

I did to the gym at least twice. I know that I should go more but it’s a start.

I walk to the tennis courts when I play nearby and occasionally do go for a walk. But not as often as when I worked.  I think that the tennis makes up for it, though.

Other News:

I finished my volunteering with STEM. The participants all ran their 5k race and it was an awesome experience.  I can’t wait to do it again in the fall.

img_0148

I went hiking twice…by myself and loved it.

I took a trip to NYC with Judy – We did a running tour of Central Park, went to the zoo and met a fellow blogger, Karen. What a full but exciting day!!

Boating season has begun.  The weather has been great. I love it at the lake.

Feeling healthy so Life Is Good.

Hopefully I will find a job and life will be even better.

Looking Ahead:

I’m not sure when my next half marathon will be.  So far, it’s not until October. But that could change. (ZOOMA Cape Cod Half Marathon which I was scheduled to run in September got cancelled 😦 )

I do have a bunch of races coming up.  This is my list so far for the next 2 months:

  • 7-10-16 – Saratoga Springs Strong to Serve 5K
  • 7-23-16 – Silks and Satins 5K
  • 7-31-16 – Care for Kids 5k
  • 8-06-16 – Race the Train (8.4 m)??
  • 8-13-16 – Camp Chingachgook 10k or Half Marathon
  • 8-20-16 – Jailhouse Rock 5K

No monthly goals.

my motto for 2016

Ultimate Coffee Date – July

Since today is the first Saturday in July,  I am joining up with CocoDeborah, and Lynda for their ultimate coffee date.

The Ultimate Coffee Date

Where did June go?  I felt like I just wrote June’s UCD post.

Anyway…

Over coffee or tea

I’d tell you that along with loss of my blogging mojo, I’ve lost my running mojo.

I had started writing Wednesday & Thursday posts and just didn’t feel like finishing them and posting.

Now instead of running, I am writing this post.

It’s perfect running weather – cool & breezy but here I sit at my computer.

It’s basically because I have too much free time (I need a busy schedule) and I am in a funk about being unemployed.

Over coffee or tea

I’d tell you that I am liking playing tennis everyday with different people.  Because the groups play at a certain time, you have to show up.  No procrastinating. I am meeting lots of new people. It’s a great diversion from job hunting.

img_0332

Over coffee or tea

I’d tell you that I have a new running friend.  Don’t worry Judy & Barbara, I still need you guys.

I met her on FB and we have run twice together and plan to again next week.  She is training for a marathon and no, I am not tempted.

13508972_1818003835089003_7257062188135281987_n

Alyssa

Over coffee or tea

I’d tell you I’m going through Starbucks withdrawal.  I am saving money not working across the street from a Starbucks.  I haven’t given it up totally since there is one when I shop at Target or grocery shop at Price Chopper.  Yesterday I had to resort to making my own chocolate banana protein smoothie.

img_0500

Over coffee or tea

I’d tell you that I bit the bullet and signed for a SUP class tomorrow.  I even talked Judy into it.  I’m a little nervous because I can’t bend my ankle due to all the hardware in it and I can’t balance because of it.  I guess the worst that can happen is that I will look like a fool and get wet.

Hopefully, I learn enough to be able to SUP on Lake George.

Over coffee or tea

I’d tell you that I have been racing a lot.  I’ve run 4 races in June – three 5ks and a 10 miler.

But this weekend I am not racing. The only race around here is Monday and I’d rather be up at the lake.

20140707-135858-50338555.jpg

I did sign up for at least 3 in July.

Over coffee or tea

I’d tell you that July 4th is one of my favorite holidays.  I love the fireworks.  I have watched them every year ever since I was a kid.

watching the fireworks from our boat

Now we get to watch them over the lake.

Happy 4th!

Happy Running! Anything to spill?  Are you racing this weekend?  Do you like to watch the fireworks? Have you tried SUPing? Anyone watching the Olympic Trails?

Friday Five: Summer Fitness Goals

Since it’s Friday, I’m linking up with three DC area bloggers Mar at Mar On the Run, Cynthia at You Signed Up For What?! and Courtney from Eat Pray Run, DC .  Anyone can join with their own Friday Five post (yes, it must be a Friday Five!!)  They encourage you to visit other blogs on the linkup, comment, share and engage!

My Friday Five topic is Summer Fitness Goals

  1. Work Those Arms.

My arms need help.  You don’t see the bat wings in photos but they’re there. I could go to the gym or do planks at home. (If only I could do A push-up…)

IMG_6286

I hope to keep playing a lot of tennis.  That can’t hurt.

img_3789

2. Run with Others

And I don’t mean in races. That’s a given.   It is easier to just go out and do it alone but I run better and faster and at a more consistent pace when I don’t run by myself.

13508972_1818003835089003_7257062188135281987_n

My new running buddy, Alyssa, who training for her first marathon in Dec.

Barbara who challenges me to run faster

Denise & Judy whose run/walk style helps me be more consistent.

3.  Find Some Different Places to Run

I need to get out of my rail trail rut.  It’s easy and it’s close but now I have the time to explore.

Central Park was a blast but it’s 3 hours away.

But there are lots of places within an hour that I need to explore.

Old Champlain Canal trail (Waterford)

Peebles Island

 4.  Try something new.

Hopefully parasailing or driving a jetski but most likely kayaking and SUPing.

stay turned so see how this turned out… I plan to try it on Sunday

5. Eat healthier.

Already kicked my Starbucks habit since I don’t work nearby anymore.

img_0500

made my first smoothie – chocolate, banana, protein powder, almond milk – as good as Starbucks

chicken, apples, walnuts, cheese, lettuce, raspberry dressing – just like Panera’s?

I haven’t kicked my ice cream addiction yet.
