Running while on vacation

im_backWell, I got back late Wednesday night from my annual TENNIS vacation in Naples Florida.

The schedule was that every morning we play doubles for 1.5 hours and then have a tennis lesson for 1.5 hours.

20140522-124142-45702225.jpg

our group with our instructor

Did I run?

Yes! I made it a priority to do so.

In order to run, I would skip part of the doubles play and run.  After my run, I would change my clothes and join them to play. After playing we would have our lesson.

After the first 2 days, I realized that it  was faster to run in my tennis clothes and have someone bring my racket & shoes to the court.

Often?

Yes! 5 times.

  • Thursday before tennis that got rained out – 3 miles halted by rain in the middle
  • Friday before tennis – 3 miles again
  • Saturday before tennis – 3 miles barely
  • Monday before tennis – 2.5 miles
  • Tuesday before tennis – 2 miles

I did not run Sunday since we were going to Longboat Key to visit friends and play tennis. I did not run on Wednesday since we moved our tennis lesson to an earlier time.

Were they good runs?

Nope.  None were.

It was very humid on the first few runs and of course, much warmer than I was used to.  Then it got even warmer.  It was tough to breathe and run.  My running got to be walking/running and slower and slower.

I also found for the first time that I was missing tennis.  Everyone else was playing tennis. I wanted to be with them And I wanted to be warmed up before our lesson.

So my runs got shorter.

Did I enjoy them?

Yes. Immensely.

I loved the scenery – the trees, flowers, etc.  I loved the sunshine and even the heat.

During each run I took a different route. I ran around the neighborhoods of World Tennis Center (WTC).  I ran around the pool area and tennis courts.  I ran outside the WTC along the main road in one direction and then another day in the other direction.

What will I do differently next year?

I could get up earlier.  But it’s hard when you go out to dinner late and you are hanging out with friends after that.

I could  run every other day. But you never know in Florida when it will rain. You have to take advantage of the beautiful weather.

I could  just play tennis but I would have been upset with myself for NOT running.

I could run after tennis but I know I would have been too tired and would be making others wait for me to go to the beach.

So next year, I will probably do nothing different from this year.

Suggestions for running while on vacation:

  • Be prepared.  Bring clothes for all weather conditions.
  • Schedule your runs. If you leave it to chance, it won’t happen.
  • Be flexible.  Sometimes other persons’ needs or desires will come before your running.
  • Find a scenic route.  Pretty views make all the difference.
  • Lower your expectations. Distance & speed goals will probably not happen.
  • Register for a race in the area, if possible. Then you will definitely run.
  • Have fun.

Happy Running! Do you run while on vacation?

Demystifying the Destination Race

Guest post by Arianna at http://ariannaknowsbest.blogspot.com

We’ve all seen the ads for fun races in exotic locations. Want to run a marathon in Hawaii? You can do that. Want to do a triathlon in Cozumel? You can do that too! Combining racing with travel is a perfect way to kill two birds with one stone and make your big race an even more memorable experience.

If the logistics of a destination race seem daunting, fear not! I’m here to help. Last year, I traveled to Philadelphia for the Feel the Love 5k and learned a few things. Here are some tips to help make your next race in a far off locale a big success!

Choose the right race: Picking the perfect local race can be hard enough but when you start looking at out of town events, there is even more to consider. How far can you realistically travel? Is the location difficult to reach by your preferred method of transportation? Are there activities for your family to do during your race? If you pick a place with lots of options for entertainment, a destination race can actually turn into a mini vacation for the whole family!

Make your travel arrangements: Decide if you are driving or flying and if you will need a rental car. When choosing your lodging, consider staying as close to the race site as possible. It might cost a little more but it can make life a whole lot easier! If cooking your own food is important, you may want to consider renting a house through a home rental site such as VRBO. Accommodations during big races can fill up quickly so it’s best to book your lodging as soon as possible.

Make plans for your pets: Traveling with your pets can be a lot of fun but if you are planning on bringing them along, there are a few things to consider. Do your accommodations allow animals? Is your family willing to wrangle them while you are busy with the race? If you decide to bring them with you may want to find local dog boarding to care for them on race day. We were able to find a last minute sitter who was willing to take Brodie, our lab, that night and for the majority of race day. Remember that most races start early so you should arrange your plans for your pet at least a day before to avoid a crazy morning before the race.

Plan your pre-race meals: Think about what you will eat in the days leading up to the race. Pre-race food is unique for every runner and by this point you should have figured out what works best for you. Make sure you have access to that food! If you are relying on the hotel for breakfast, be sure that the food will be available early enough for you to eat and digest it before your race. Some runners prefer to carb load and others rely on just a protein bar to hold them over. Before a shorter run, I will do a bit of fresh fruit and a protein bar, as I don’t want a heavy stomach during my run.

Pack wisely: Make a list and check it twice, three times if need be! When making your packing list it may be helpful to mentally go through every part of your race day. Start first thing in the morning: What will you eat for breakfast? What will you wear? Visualizing your day can help ensure that you don’t forget anything important. Check the forecast but be prepared for any type of weather- light clothing that layers easily usually work best in any uncertain situation.

Don’t overdo the pre-race sightseeing: You’ve worked hard to get here and you’ve probably spent the last few weeks training. Don’t over exert yourself with too much walking! A little walking is a great way to loosen up after a long travel day but don’t overdo it. Save the bulk of your sightseeing for after the race. For our race, we booked a hotel for 3 days: the day before, race day, and the day after, that way I had enough time to prepare and enough time to relax after.

Lighthouse 5K Race Report

lh5k

Well, this race took place during my vacation in Flagler Beach, Florida.

All of my running before this trip had been in temperatures between 0 and 30 degrees.  So this definitely would take getting used to, especially the humidity.

Also the race took place at 4:30 pm. Again different than I was accustomed to.

The theme was Las Vegas Nights so the racers were asked to dress in costume. Not being local, I decided to forgo the costume and wear normal running clothes.

I started the day getting up to see the sunrise.  My friends live 2 blocks from the ocean so that was easy.

When I got there and it was cloudy and hazy.  I feared “no sunrise” pictures.

20140303-115653.jpg

But yes, the sunrise was stunning as usual.

20140303-115743.jpg

Then I walked home and had breakfast. And I went out for a walk.  I was tempted to run but decided to keep my legs fresh for the race since I ran 4 miles the day before.

I walked on the road along the beach. The weather was similar to the day before…cool (50s) and breezier as the day progressed…but so nice to be outdoors with NO WIND CHILL and NO SNOW!!

I stopped at the pier for awhile to watch the surfers and painters and then headed home.

DSC00186

20140303-115859.jpg

In the wind, it felt chilly.  Unfortunately, the back of their house which is on the water was in the shade and wind. But in the sun, it was gorgeous.  So I sat outside in the front of their house knitting and  soaking up some Vitamin D.

Eventually my hubby joined me and we decided to go for a walk. This time in the neighborhood where all streets bordered on the water (Halifax River.)

20140303-115919.jpg

20140303-115931.jpg

Then we went out to lunch.  I had to carb load, right? We walked back to the ocean where I had spotted a French bakery/restaurant.

20140303-115810.jpg

Everything looked delicious.  I chose a vanilla latte and marsipone strawberry grilled cheese.

20140303-115832.jpg

with bread pudding for dessert (I shared!)

20140303-115845.jpg

We returned home and hung out in the sun some more (This is what happens when a race is at 4:30 pm.)

Here is when it gets interesting.

My friend’s hubby & my hubby decided to go somewhere for a little while and discovered that the car had a dead battery. So they had to call AAA to get the car started. (Lucky for me that they did since we had time to spare for the race.)

With the car now running, we left for the race which was about 30 miles away. We got a great parking spot and we were there in plenty of time.

before the race

lh5k

We walked around near the water but it was chilly and windy.

20140303-120014.jpg

You can see that I am wearing a jacket and so were other racers. You also should note that people were not dressed in costume either. (Glad I didn’t spend time getting one.)

lh5k2

I decided to leave my jacket off to run the race.  And I was glad I did!!

start

Elvis started the race (taken by Daybreak Studios)

I was actually warm running.  I tried to tell myself that this was fun but if you know me, I wanted a sub-30 finish as soon as I started (At least I have given up the thought of a PR for now.)

That means that I started out fast and couldn’t keep it up.

The course was flat.  And scenic.  There were water views.  I was getting tired as I ran.  I refused to stop, even for water and just willed myself to finish strong (though I felt like I was dying & nauseous.)

I’ll blame it all on the my lack of speed work, running long and slow, the wind, etc etc.

Splits:

mile 1 – 9:28
mile 2 – 9:54
mile 3 –  9:53
.14 – 8:28

So of course, when I approached the finish line and saw:  30:XX, I was disappointed. (I finished under 30 on a hilly course with a broken foot!!)  The lady pushing triplets in a stroller finished 3 minutes ahead of me as well as lots of young kids.  They even stopped taking photos after 29:37. So depressing!!

DSC00187

officially 30:17

Anyway, my friends were thrilled with my time.  They are not runners (and could not understand why I would even want to be there.) When we checked the finish times, it turned out that I came in FIRST in my age group.

lh5kresults

I was happy but they were not giving out the awards until 6:30 pm. UGH! My friends were hungry and didn’t want to stick around.  I didn’t want to impose so we returned to the car. And guess what?

It didn’t start!! We called AAA again and they were going to take an hour to come.

You can guess the rest.

I went back to the lighthouse to hang out with other racers. (I even met 2 men & their wives who live near me at home.  And they were in my age group. Go figure!)

20140303-120029.jpg

When it was time for awards, I asked if I could get mine first since I had to leave.   They were agreeable and handed me my gold medal.

20140303-121506.jpg

I got back to my friends just as the car was being started and off we went to get a nice dinner.

So all in all, it was an enjoyable day.

I love racing!

I love bling!

My Race-cation

vacation

My friends would be upset if they knew this.

Anyway, my hubby & I returned Sunday from 5 days in Flagler Beach, Florida where our friends moved and bought a new house.  I was excited to see their house, spent time with them, enjoy the warm temps and RUN A RACE. (We visited them last January in their old house and did all the touristy things in the area.)

We left the polar vortex of upstate New York on Wednesday and arrived to RAIN in Florida.

20140303-180950.jpg

Rain is better than snow.

We spent time catching up in their house – which is GORGEOUS – 5 bedrooms, multimedia room, boat house, overlooks the river & is 2 blocks from the ocean, etc.  I LOVE IT!!

We went out to dinner at a restaurant on the water.  I had an appetizer and dessert (of course).

Thursday morning, I went out for my first run — cool and cloudy but it felt super not to wear a jacket, gloves & tights.  I ran on the path along the beach heading south and then on the bridge over the river and then back – 4 fabulous miles.

Friday, I got up to sunshine.  I went for a run again.  Just had to do it.  Only 3 miles but on the same path but in the opposite direction (North this time).

20140303-181543.jpg

In the afternoon, I sat on the beach for a while but it was windy so I went back to my friends’ house and sat in the sun there.  (The front of their house blocks the wind.)

In the evening, we went out to a restaurant where our friends’ favorite group was playing. The singer was a cross between Jimmy Buffet and John Prine.

I’ll skip Saturday because that was RACE DAY and write about it in a separate post.

Sunday was my last day so I started it by watching the sunrise over the ocean. It was perfect!!

Then I went for a sloooooow run.  My legs were tired from the race but the weather was so nice. This time I ran around the neighborhood and then over the bridge on the opposite side from Thursday’s run.

Here are some hints that I was running SLOW!

Afterward, we went out for our final ocean view meal.
