2022 Run For the Roses 5K Race Recap

AUGUST 14, 2022 – 9:00 AM

In the summertime, I try to do my long runs on Saturday and then go boating on Sundays.

But last summer, I got a FB message about this race from a runner (Lisa) who lives in Indiana and was part of a race-cation in 2014 that I participated in (with her high school classmates, Heidi and Andrea, who lives in VT) She was going to be in town and wanted all of us to race together again.

How could I refuse?

The event consisted of a USATF sanctioned 5K foot race, a 2.5 mile guided nature walk, and children’s 1 Mile Fun Run, at Grafton Lakes State Park.

The 5K race was advertised as “challenging but offering runners of all skill levels a beautiful race course through scenic Grafton Lakes State Park, and the surrounding area.” All participants also received a tee-shirt,  book, and a rose. The proceeds form the race go to support the Grafton Community Library.

And so without a second thought, I signed up.

I had never heard of this race but I knew that the area was scenic and I had hiked there in the winter.

As I always do, I scoured the Internet for a review of this race and I found one from someone I actually knew.  This what she started her race recap with: The race director came over to get things going, and opened with “Welcome to the 31st Annual Run for the Roses! As you know, this is one of the toughest 5K courses in the area, so we’re really glad to have you all here today.”

Ok, then. So at least I was prepared beforehand for hills and lots of them. By prepared I mean that I knew about them a few days before.

Despite the challenging course, I had so much fun hanging out with these ladies.

I even won an age group award.

So guess what?

I signed up again this year for this 5k race.  Both Heidi and Andrea said that they would be there too..

Pre-Race Activities and Preparations:

Outside of two July races (July 4 & July 6), I have done zero speed work.  In some ways 5ks are harder than half marathons. You feel like you should run fast and before you get warmed up, it’s over. To make things were even more challenging, I never train/run on hills.

The week going into the race had me running 3 times. This summer, the temps have been incredibly hot and humid.  Runs as a result have been SLOOOW!!

(Looks like a “pink” week…)

The day before the race, I just went for a walk with my running friends and did errands and gardening.

Normally I would have said the weather was too warm for a great race but compared to past weekends, it seemed cool.

No matter what the temps, summer race dressing is fairly simple – tank, skirt, cap, sunglasses.

decided on teal blue for a change

Race Day:

I had my oatmeal and coffee and left early. Although I went there last year, I was not very familiar with the area. Happily, I noticed that it was only in the 50s when I left at 7:30 am.

This park has lots of trails and places to swim and kayak.

I had no problems finding the race location so I had arrived early. (There is an admission fee to this park but if you were racing, it was FREE!)

I picked up my shirt and bib and waited around for my friends.

in addition to a tech shirt, you picked out a library book

Heidi arrived first and then Andrea.. We chatted and chatted.

obligatory pre-race pic

I also recognized a few runners that I knew. Many were from the STEM group or the Freihofer Training Challenge.

Then I bumped in my good friend Sue.

turned out that she knew Andrea, too.

Soon it was time to head toward the start line.

no teletubbies this year but a guy dressed up as a baby

For some reason, they delayed the race for 10 minutes.  More time to chat with other runners that I knew.

twinning!

As I mentioned, I knew that it was a looped course and after the first mile, it was mostly uphill.

according to my Garmin

I postponed my long run for this 5k so I planned to at least enjoy the race.  You cannot expect miracles when you only run on flat routes and use very short run intervals for your runs. I had a funny feeling that I would be walking a lot of the course.

At least the weather was in my favor.

Mile 1

The race was not chip timed so if I really cared, I would have stood close to the starting line (but I didn’t.)

We started with a slight uphill on the main road leading into the park. Then there was a gradual downhill.

I also tried to pick up the pace since I figured this was the only mile that I would not be walking (and I was right.)  It was breezy by the lake but out on the road, there was no shade and warmer than I expected.

Looking back at this mile, I obviously ran it too fast. But at the time, I felt good (until I didn’t.)

Mile 2

There was a water stop at the beginning of this mile and a sprinkler (yay). I was not expecting water but it was welcome. I was getting warm (Shouldn’t have changed out of my tank.)

The course shifted to flat and then about a quarter mile later, started heading uphill. And yes, I had to walk. And walk and walk.

Mile 3- 3.1

There was a second water stop here so I grabbed some and walked even longer.

After turning left around mile 2.1 (yup, 1.5 to 2.1 was pure uphill), we had a short little downhill.

Then it was a pure uphill for the next 0.6, with no breaks at all.

I walked several times during the last 2 miles…not sure how many times.  But a lot.  (Remember I’m used to intervals now.)

Around mile 2.7, we turned right to get back on the main road that the race had started on.

The uphill continued until 2.9, and then we got a short little downhill (30 feet of drop) before the course flattened out to the finish.

Unfortunately, while the final loop around to the finish was flat, it felt long – we crossed under the start banner and then made a huge circle around the parking lot.

We made the two right hand turns to reverse direction and finally I saw the finish line ahead of me.

I did my best to sprint through the finish line but the hills had sapped much of my energy.

But I saw on the clock that I was finishing under 30 minutes so I was thrilled.

As soon as you crossed the finish line, they handed you a rose. Very sweet.

Post Race Activities:

I grabbed some water, iced tea, fruit and cookies while waiting my friends to finish.

here comes Andrea

Soon they posted the results.  Both Andrea and I won age group awards.

Note that I won by only ONE second!!

I couldn’t stick around for the awards. My hubby texted me that he was already on his way to the lake.  So my fiend, Sue, said she would get my award.

Additional Race Reflections:

I would never have picked this race on my own. But I really enjoyed the experience. I feel fortunate to be part of these women’s “tribe.” As Andrea put it: “There are no accidents nor coincidences in life. Everything happens for a reason – so glad our universes collided!” So true.

And it was a lovely small town race with about 120 runners. Yes, it was challenging but maybe not so much if I actually trained for a 5k.

But I didn’t overdo and my legs was able to do my long run the next day.

8 miles on my Monday off

Maybe next year, I will actually bring my bathing suit and SUP and enjoy the lake after the race. And even convince some of my local running friends to join me.

This year, I joined my hubby on our boat on Lake George.

Positives:

  • Friends Reunion
  • Lots of familiar faces
  • Nice swag – tech shirt, book, a rose
  • location- pretty park with trails and a lake
  • Mile markers
  • Volunteer calling out times at each mile
  • Two water stops
  • Real bathrooms and showers
  • Free admission to the park

Negatives:

  • the HILLS
  • Gun timed

Would I recommend this race?

Yes. It was well organized. I’ll probably run it again next year.

Final Stats:

still Queen of the positive splits!

My finish time was about the same as the last 5k that I ran in July (29:11.) So I was not disappointed. And it was a little faster than on the same course last year (29:27.) Obviously if I do not train, I can’t expect those faster times.  But right now, I am content just to be out there running.

Weekly Run Down for 8.7.22-8.14.22: A Brief Cool Down…

Yes.  Heat, humidity to start the week but then we got a break…

Running continued but with an added 5k thrown into the mix.

Last Week:

  • Sunday – Boating Sunday.

An oppressively hot day. Luckily I had lake breezes and shade (and no rain.)

  • Monday – It was #nevermissamonday but I stayed in bed instead of running. No regrets.

I had the day off (as I do every other Monday) and a running friend suggested a day at Emerald Lake in VT.  So I grabbed my SUP and we had a wonderful time. A long drive but so worth it. (And again missed the rain.)

  • Tuesday –  Back to work and I did drag myself out of bed early to get my run done. But Holy Humidity!!!

It warmed up but I think the humidity decreased.  Anyway, it felt that way during my post-work walk with a friend.

  • Wednesday – Day 2 of the early morning runs. Whoa! About 10 degrees cooler than the previous morning! I’ll take it.

always taking different neighborhood routes and always looking for flowers…

I met my friend again for a post-work walk (but we went in the opposite direction.)

  • Thursday – Rest day because I had a trail run scheduled for the evening.  As usual, I met my running friends and we walked, chatted and had a blast.

love those cloud formations

  • Friday – Normally Friday is my rest day but since I had a race on Sunday, I would be taking Saturday off (which is ordinarily my long run day.)

I had more time so I drove for my early morning run.

why yes, I do match everything

  • Saturday – Long Run Saturday for everyone else but for me, it was just a walk and brunch.

long runs, short runs, walkers and bikers – all on the rail trail supporting each other… so fortunate to be part of this group. No one ever has to be alone!!

  • Sunday –  Race Day! I ran the Run for the Roses 5k for the 2nd time.  I met up with old friends and somewhat conquered the hills in Grafton Lake State Park.. (Recap on Tuesday…)

Sunday in the summer is for boating so I plan to join my hubby up at the lake for the rest of the day.

Al Goldstein 5k Race Recap

JULY 6, 2022 – 7:10 pm

If you follow my blog, you know that I often got sent to NYC for work.

Usually, I just tried to squeeze in a run along the East River, along the Hudson River or in Central Park.

Well several years ago, I found a race!!!!

Apparently during the summer months on alternating Wednesdays at 7:10 pm, there is a cheap ($7.50 – if you sign up for the whole series, each race costs only $5) 5k in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. These races are organized by the Prospect Park Track Club (PPTC).

I ran one 5k in July 2017 and had a great time.

Age group award and meeting “Al Goldstein”

I was excited that when they were scheduled again in 2018, two of the 5k races coincided with the dates that I would be working in NYC. I ran both of them.

In 2019, I was only in NYC to run one of this 5K racing series.

met someone from my hometown

And in 2020 and 2021….  there were no NYC work trips (due to COVID).

My trips to NYC this year are limited so I was very fortunate to be in NYC on a Wednesday when one these 5ks was happening.

You know I can’t resist signing up for a race.  Besides, I needed to run 3 miles anyway.

Pre-Race Preparations and Activities:

This race was a spur of the moment decision. I mean I’d run a 4 mile race two days before

and then hiked up a mountain the day before.

Yes, I am crazy!!

Obviously, this was just for fun and an opportunity to run in Prospect Park with other runners..

Race Day:

I arrived in NYC around 11 am, checked into my hotel, and headed by subway to Queens to set up for my job the next day.  I had some lunch and then headed back to Manhattan to change into running clothes.

The race didn’t start until 7:10 pm so I still had time to kill.  I decided to visit the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens since it was across the street from the park where the race would be held.

I spent several hours wandering around the gardens and loved every minute. The gardens closed at 6pm so I headed over to the Prospect Park.

Luckily there were signs and I followed them to LeFrak Center at Lakeside (where the bib pick up was). I had a scenic walk through the park. I passed the race start and end.

As I got closer, there were many signs pointing you in the right direction.

I was pretty early and it wasn’t crowded at all.

It was strange to be at a race where I didn’t know a soul.  But there were real restrooms, water and tables in the shade so I just hung out.

Eventually runners started arriving.  There were probably close to 500.

Soon it was time for everyone to walk down to the start.

The photographer caught me on the way.

There were no corrals so I just pushed into the crowd.

The important thing to note about this race was that it was HOT!!!!!!!!!!! Like 90 degrees!!

I was familiar with the course. I had a bottle of water before the race and there was usually one water stop at mile 2 and then water at the  finish.

Right before the start of the race, they announced that “one of their water stations has gone missing and if anyone’d seen or happened upon their water, please let them know or give it back!”

What!? That of course made me nervous even though I wasn’t planning to “race” it.  It was extremely warm out… No breeze and humid, as well.

As I mentioned above, I had run this course several times in the past. On the whole, although it was not an easy course, I always did fairly well and since it attracts a younger crowd, I usually won my age group.

Al Goldstein 5Ks:

2017 – 27:52
2018 – 28:24, 28:02
2019 – 28:48

Same course:
Building Brooklyn 5k: 2019 – 28:05
Brooklyn Ice Cream Social 5k: 2018  – 27:30

However, in 2022 on a very hot evening, anything could happen but I was NOT expecting any blazing speed.

The Course:

AGSS Course Map

Here’s a cool video of the course: https://www.plotaroute.com/route/840765?units=km

elevation according to my Garmin

I knew about the big LONG hill during mile 1 as well as some rolling hills the last mile.

I also remembered that there were usually runners of all ages who all looked like “runners” and the finish times were incredibly fast. A little intimidating. but it is what it is.  What else was there to do on a nice warm evening in NYC??

So here’s how it went down:

Mile 1:

starting my Garmin lol

and off I go…

I started running the first mile slowly. My legs felt like lead and I was already sweating.

don’t I look happy?

And then I got to the hill, I tried to run up it but it definitely wasn’t happening.  I did my best…

Mile 2:

Mile 2 was better but I was so hot AND thirsty.

Every who passed me by looked they had gone swimming. Even I was dripping wet from the humidity.

And so I ran then I walked and ran and then walked.  I hoped that I was running more than walking but I wasn’t sure.  And when I was running, I suppose I was running fast…

Mile 3-3.1:

By the end of mile 3, I was crashing. I tried to finish strong but I just had to walk. And walk again.

Hooray! I see that finish line!

I did not have enough energy to sprint and finished over 29 minutes. My slowest 5k this year.

But under the those miserable conditions, I was not disappointed in the least.

Post Race Activities:

I was a little dizzy and went directly to get water and sit down.

We did hear ambulances.  Apparently someone went down during the race.  (Unfortunately, I found out later on FB that the runner DIED!!! More info here.)

They quickly posted the results. I did win my age group (as I was the only one in my age group. LOL)

Additional Race Reflections:

Yes, it was a course PW.

But you can’t control the weather. And I’m happy that I ventured out to Brooklyn.

Unfortunately when I think back to this race, I will be thinking of the runner who died.  He was only a few years older than I was, a NYRR coach who had completed 19 marathons and won his age group at the previous Al Goldstein 5k. But as some runners mentioned… he died doing something he loved. Still, very sad 😦

Positives:

  • Price – $7.50
  • Vaccination required for all runners.
  • Bag check
  • Bathrooms (real ones!)
  • Water before and after the race
  • Decent turnout (450 runners)
  • Chip Timing
  • Marker at each mile
  • 5 year Age group awards ceremony after the race
  • Results immediately emailed to you
  • MANY free photos

Negatives:

  • Travel time to Brooklyn
  • Evening Race
  • Hills
  • NO WATER stops
  • Death of a runner

Would I recommend this race?

Yes. Yes. It’s a nice local race. It was definitely worth $7.50. And if I am ever in NYC at the same time as one of PPTC’s races, I plan to sign up again.

Final Stats:

Splits:

I was not kidding when I said I walked most of this race!! No regrets!

Next Up:

Possibly another July 5k and definitely a 5k in August before the THREE fall half marathons arrive.

Happy Running! Ever run a race while you are traveling for work? Do you try to improve your times on the same course? How does the heat affect your finish times? Please share.

Valley Cats Father’s Day Home Run 5k Race Recap

ValleyCats Father's Day Home Run 5K :: Hudson-Mohawk Road Runners Club

June 18, 2022 – 9AM

This race was not on my radar.  I was planning a long run and taking a break from racing.

Then my friend begged me to do it with her.  How could I say No?

I said that I would sign up if she ran 5 more miles after the race with me… (I wanted to be prepared for my 15k race the following weekend.)

This was not the first time I had run this race.  I ran it in 2010!!

they gave out free ice cream that year,

Yes, 12 years ago! I ran with Amanda, a running friend at that time:

This is the race where I met new running BFF Mary. We ran many races together after that. When she eventually moved to Palm Springs, I visited her twice.

Kelly and Mary (on the right)

Then I ran it again in 2016. I knew a lot of runners by then. And it was even more fun.

here with my friend Tom

and my age group competition, Carolyn

My time back in 2010 was 29:40 but improved to 28:47 in 2016.  Both years, I was 2nd in my age group (won a cap, then gloves).

2022? Anything could happen… no expectations.

Pre-Race Preparations and Activities:

I had a tiring two days working in NYC before the race. And I returned home very late the night before.

At least I did get in a few short runs during the week.

Race Day:

Below is the course map and elevation:

vchr5kmap

elevation according my Garmin is below…

I was really relaxed about this race.  I was soooo tired and so I had no real goals besides enjoying myself. And I also needed to save energy to run 5 more miles after the race!!

I got to the race early.. I never looked at the weather so I was surprised how windy and chilly it was.  I got my bib and shirt and sat in my car to stay warm (very odd since it was 91 degrees the day before when I was in NYC).

cotton shirt but also 4 free tickets to a minor league baseball game

Eventually I did get out to hang out with friends.

Heidi (who talked me into this race) finally arrived.

There were even real restrooms

She persuaded me to do one mile before the race so we would only have to run 4 more after.  It was more of a walk but still we got it done.

This race began and ended at the home of the Valley Cats, a local baseball team that plays at Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy, NY, on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College.

img_0194

The finishers are captured on the large stadium screen
img_0195

Reluctantly I left my jacket in Heidi’s car since I had DIY arm warmers on.  Still I was COLD!!

There was no chip timing at the start line so I started pretty close to the front. Heidi moved farther back.

and took this pic of me

Mile 1:

The race began in the parking lot and then we ran around the outside of the stadium before heading into the neighborhoods.

Valley_Cats_5K-055

this was in 2016

Valley_Cats_5K-056

As soon as I started running I was no longer cold. I even immediately rolled down my arm warmers. And the wind was not as bad as it was at the stadium.

But I was dragging… I so wanted to be back in my bed catching up with my sleep. I was running but I couldn’t catch my breath and felt to need to walk.

I had started with my friend Carolyn (my age group rival) but she quickly got ahead and kept gaining on me as the race went on.

Mile 2:

Finally there was a water stop around mile 1.5 so I walked a bit. The neighborhoods were rolling hills but nothing too bad until one steep one during the second mile.  I tried to run up it but the legs just weren’t having it. So I ran/walked it.

We repeated most of the course afterwards so here are some pics from the neighborhoods

Carolyn was still way ahead but I also knew that she was fast and if I could see her in the distance, my pace wasn’t that bad. (I don’t look at my Garmin usually until the race is over.)

Mile 3-3.1:

A few more walks, I think. And then there was a welcome downhill during mile 3.

We finished the race inside the stadium and I gave it everything (which wasn’t much at this point).

I didn’t expect a PR however I really wanted to finish under 29 minutes.

And I did  – 28:43 (gun time)!! Course PR!!!

Post Race Activities:

Everyone whom I talked to before the race seemed to have a good race. Some finished ahead of me and some after.

I waited for Heidi to finish (and she did well, too.)

the happy runners with the Valley Cats mascot

We headed for the food while waiting for the age group awards to be announced.  There was  a decent spread: popcorn, bagels, cookies, bananas, coffee, water. I had a hot dog, coffee and cookie.

And I did win one – 2nd in my age group.

Carolyn in (orange) won a 1st)

yup, a bat.. hey, it was the “home run 5k”

We planned to run more miles after the race.  Did we want to???

Nope!!

I insisted and Heidi couldn’t say No so we went back to her car to get my jacket (I was shivering…)

We sorta did intervals but mostly ran until we didn’t feel like it.  We started in the stadium/college parking lots and then decided that it would be more scenic to run in the same neighborhoods as during the race.

We got it done!!! And immediately headed to Panera’s for our reward.

Additional Race Reflections:

When I dragged myself out of bed that morning, I was not feeling good about running this race.

As usually happens, I connected with some awesome people, ran a decent race and don’t regret it one bit.

Positives:

  • Ample parking.
  • Well marked course.
  • Lots of familiar faces.
  • 4 free tickets to a game as swag
  • Interesting course (through the neighborhoods and finish in a baseball stadium)
  • Friendly and abundant number of volunteers.
  • Free photos
  • Interesting 5 year age group awards (a bat)
  • Decent post-race food

Negatives:

  • Cotton shirt
  • Gun time (not chip timed)
  • Hills (but don’t most races)
  • Windy

Would I recommend this race?

Yes. Yes. It’s a nice local race. And very well organized. Maybe someone will twist my arm to run it again next year.

Final Stats:

Splits:

5 walks!!

according to my Garmin

Weekly Run Down for 6.12.22-6.19.22: NYC Bound

This week was rather hectic and it included a quick trip NYC for work.

I am always excited when I get to visit NYC but I wish it were for pleasure.

Last Week:

  • Sunday – Boating Sunday! And grateful that the rain in the forecast never materialized.

my favorite place to read and relax!!

  • Monday – I had the day off from work.  The original plan was to meet a college friend in NYC. She had to cancel.

Plan B – meet a tennis friend to go hiking in the Adirondacks.  She had to cancel.

Plan C – meet a running friend to go hiking in Lenox, MA.  She did not cancel and we had a lovely time.

First we hiked in Pleasant Valley Nature Sanctuary.

Then after lunch, we went to Kennedy Park.

When I got home, I met two friends for a walk on the rail trail (with wine and snacks after).

Got my steps in today!!!

  • Tuesday – After two days off from running, I knew I needed to get out there (in order to get my 4 days in) so I squeezed in a short one before work.

another Broadway run 🙂

After work, again I walked on the rail trail (but a different section) with friends.

  • Wednesday – A busy work day and a dentist appt.

But Wednesday evenings there are several scheduled group runs.  Tonight there was an ice cream run.  You know I couldn’t resist that.

Not wanting to run late and drive far, I met up with a friend to run closer to home … and have ice cream.

and we twinned in SS skirts

  • Thursday – First day traveling to NYC for work since January 2020.  I was subbing for another trainer. After taking Amtrak to Manhattan, I checked into my hotel, had lunch and then took the subway to Queens.  Eventually I returned to Manhattan.

I couldn’t let a day in NYC go by without a run in Central Park.

loved every minute there!!

Unfortunately it is hard to coordinate a meet-up with my NYC buds. I didn’t see Elizabeth but Cari and I did have a late dinner together.

  • Friday – Another trip from Manhattan to Queens to work and back and then Amtrak home that night.  LONG DAY!! And a hot one… 90 degrees!!! (Glad I was minimally outside.)

time to kill before my evening train… so why not?

  • SaturdayRace Day – Valley Cats Father’s Day Home Run 5k – I was NOT planning to run a race today but a running friend asked me to… that’s what friends are for…

It was fun!! And talk about weather whiplash… it was windy and in the 50s!!

I felt like I was sleep walking and was surprised to come in 2nd in my age group

and afterward, I talked her into accompanying me on 5 more miles (followed my brunch) and then errands.

Brrrr…. but we warmed up as we re-traced the race route

  • Sunday –  Supposed to be sunny and warmer so the plans are to spend Father’s Day on the boat.

pic from last FD

This Coming Week on the Run–

  • Monday – DAY OFF (Juneteenth) – run
  • Tuesday – run
  • Wednesday – rest day
  • Thursday – ARE trail run

2022 Freihofer Run for Women Race Recap

June 4, 2022 – 9:00 am

This is the only race that I’ve run every year! This was my 15th time!!!!! (In 2020, it went virtual so actually my 14th in-person FRW race.)

It is always held the Saturday after Memorial Day but due to COVID, the race was moved to September last year. This year, it has retuned to its regular date.

on their webpage…can you spot me in the pink cap?

My first FRW was in 2008 (my first year of running). At the time, it was the farthest I’d ever run:

FRW - 2008

I mentored a beginning running group in 2010 which was very rewarding:

Unfortunately, I’m the only one from this group who still runs.

In 2012, it was my first run after serious ankle surgery:

and this photo made the cover of our local paper.

I even ran it in 2013 after breaking my foot at mile 1:

And in 2019, it was the last race for my friend Andrea (who died of cancer).

As you can tell, there is a lot of history attached to this race for me.

In 2020, I was named an Ambassador.  That honor has continued into this year, as well.

Cari, recognize where that photo was taken?

Believe it not, I chose to skip my high school reunion (also scheduled for today) in order to run this race!!

Pre-Race Preparations and Activities:

As with this race every year, I never know what will happen… I could break my foot again (as I did in 2013) or could have a course PR as I did in 2018. Most likely, it will just be a fun race with lots of women.

And this was also my seventh Freihofer Training Challenge.

did my green hat stand out much in 2018?!

Training is a loose term. I kinda just showed up on most Monday runs. But each Monday seemed to follow either a half marathon or a long run. As a result, although I registered for the Advanced group, I never participated in any of their speed drills. Instead I usually ran with the Intermediate group.

But I was excited to be part of it and support all the runners who would be finishing their FIRST 5k. And see my “current and past FTC” buddies who would hopefully PR.

In past years, the day before I walked to Empire State Plaza concourse at lunch to go to the expo and pick up my race packet. They used to have a really big expo with vendors and health-related exhibits. But the past few years, they have held it at a local college.

race swag = cookies, break and a shirt

As I did last year, I signed up to volunteer on Friday evening at packet pick-up and then skipped playing mah jongg in favor of a pizza dinner and time to organize my #flatme.

Race Day:

I hate parking garages and traffic so I parked on the street and walked to the start. I used to do this every year. However, with the new(er) course, it was an even longer hike. Like almost 2 miles!

It was still strange to run down Madison Avenue and not see the race banners and not see the giant poster on the bridge.

Due to construction, they changed the course seven years ago.

They say that this course is faster…less congested and has a less steep hill at the start and finish.

I did run the new course the past seven years and I liked it better than the original..

heading downhill to the finish line

The start was near a park across from the Capitol Building. I wore a jacket because I thought it would be cool out. Nope.  Bright sunshine and warming up quickly.

Soon the start line as in sight.

I ran past it and entered the City Hall park in search of the Training Challenge tent. I left my jacket there. In past years, there was water and lots of snacks.  Not this year.

oops. ripped my bib

I was quite early so I continued to walk around until more runners arrived. I chatted with many of my running friends and took quite a few pics.

my tennis friend, Mary Pat (responsible for starting me on my running journey. Do you recognize her from the 2008 pic?

my “sole sister” Heidi

training challenge friends

Catching up with everyone made the time go by quickly and soon it was time to line up for our Training Challenge photo.

Though, I didn’t get much out of the training itself, I was happy to be part of this amazing group of women.

I was scheduled to start in corral 3 so I headed that way and bumped into a few friends there too. While I was waiting, I ate a Honey Stinger waffle (with no water … blech)

in my corral

Mile 1:

It is usually very crowded during the first mile but this year were fewer runners than in previous years (about 2500 vs 3500). I never really had to weave and had plenty of space to run comfortably.

The race began with a long steep uphill.  It’s a good thing since it kept you at a slower pace.

But I did run the whole uphill… it was slow but I did not have to walk.

Mile 1 continued as we turned left and entered the park (and the hill ended).

There were rolling hills throughout the park.  They were not bad and even I could run them without walking.

The worst part were all the potholes and cracks in the roads…There were cones over the potholes but you had to weaving back n forth to avoid them and you had to keep your eyes pealed to ground to make sure you didn’t trip.

I took this pic after the race a few years ago

Mile 2:

There was a water stop around mile 1.25.  It was very sunny and I was getting warm so I did stop and walk.

More rolling hills during this mile as you ran around the park circling the lake.  Only one of the hills was steep but it was very short.

I tried to pick up the pace for the second mile. I told myself that I would not walk until the next water stop.

Mile 3-3.1:

That was around mile 2.5. At this point, I was starting to get very warm so I stopped again for a drink and walked longer than before.

Finally we left the park and headed toward the street we started on.

It was a long downhill and I had to remember not to start sprinting too soon.  I’ve made that mistake in past years.

Eventually I see the 3 mile sign and I started to run as fast as I could while posing for the photographers and running though the finish line.

I did see that the timing clock read 28:XX…. No course PR for this girl today!

Post Race Activities:

I knew with two walks and zero speed work, I couldn’t come close to a PR (and I was not expecting one). It was a decent time (even if it was slower than all my Freihofer 5ks since 2016) and I was happy!!

I grabbed some snacks (apple sauce, bar, banana). I was hoping as in past years to snag some chocolate milk and maybe a bagel. Nope!!

Then I went back to the finish line to cheer in some friends.

with racing friends Linda and Carolyn

I ran into even more runners again that I knew. Every where I turned, there was someone familiar – from a job, tennis, races, etc. That’s what’s great about running a popular local race.

with Heidi again and “sole sister” Deb

The first time runners were so excited. That put a smile on my face. I remembered why I love this race and it was never because of my awesome finish times.

Before we left, we checked out our finish times.  No award for any of us but a good effort by all.

We were hungry and so we didn’t stay around for the awards. There were, however, some well-known runners in the field.  (In past years, Sara Hall and Joan Samuelson ran this race).

Allie Ostrander (on right) won the race and Allie Kieffer came in 2nd. Allie O was recently interviewed on the Ali on the Run podcast.

And last but not least, this lady at age 92!!!

with her daughter and granddaughter –  so sweet!!

I walked back (uphill) to my car and then met Heidi and Deb at the diner for brunch.

Additional Race Reflections:

Many runners were excited about their PRs. I may not have run my fastest time but I still enjoyed myself.

You get what you put in. I did not do all the speed workouts so I can’t be disappointed. I also recently ran a half marathon and a 10 mile race and I am no spring chicken. My time may not have been as fast as 2018 (a course PR of 27:37) but it was faster than the previous two 5ks that I’ve run in 2022.

So I was very pleased with that.

And I always enjoy running through Washington Park too.

from IG

Positives:

  • Ample parking.
  • Well marked course.
  • Lots of familiar faces.
  • Interesting course (through a beautiful park).
  • Downhill finish.
  • Friendly and abundant number of volunteers.
  • Two water stops (for a 5k)
  • The electric atmosphere.
  • Virtual option.
  • Free finish and start photos
  • Immediate results
  • Nice Swag for a 5k (tech shirt, medal, cookies, bread)
  • All women – all ages, all paces…
  • Many free photo stations

Negatives:

  • Uphill first mile.
  • Uneven pavement in the park
  • Sunny and warm
  • No chocolate milk or bagels post-race

Would I recommend this race?

Yes. Yes. It’s a great local race. And having it be ALL WOMEN makes it even more special.

Final Stats:

Splits:

Negative splits!!!! Woo Hoo!

I have a 15k is a few weeks and I thought I might run a few more miles so today could also count as a long run.

And I would have if I hadn’t had the brunch option.  No will power!

So FRW #15 is in the books!

The tradition is still alive! It was again a great local race with many women running it. Can’t wait to run it again next year.

It’s Tuesday so don’t forget to link up with these wonderful ladies:  Zenaida and Kim (Kooky Runner).

Weekly Run Down for 5.29.22-6.5.22: That time of year..

Still racing every weekend.

And my favorite race of the year was held yesterday!!

from 2019 but I liked the pic

Last Week:

  • Sunday –  Race Day!  Miles on the Mohawk!! A local 10 miler that I ran for the second time.  This year, it didn’t rain. Instead it was HOT and humid.  As a result, it was a hard race but I enjoyed the course and all the familiar faces.

  • Monday – Holiday – DAY OFF!!

So I planned to start the holiday at the gym.  I got there and it was closed. BOO!

That just meant the hubby and I could leave earlier for the lake.  It was a beautiful day and all I did was read, relax and enjoy the scenery.

a perfect first day of boating

We picnicked on an island and then stopped for ice cream on the way home!

  • Tuesday – I planned to run before work but my knee has been feeling wonky (since gardening on Friday). Luckily it didn’t bother me at all during the race.  I decided instead to go to the gym.

  • Wednesday –  Global Running Day!  That means a run no matter what!  With rain and thunderstorms predicted for later, I drove to the rail trail to run before work.

I made the right decision since it rained on and off the rest of the day

It seems that all my blogging friends joined me on a run virtually.

Thanks to Cari for the collage

After work, I skipped my STEM run in favor of a dinner given for the FRW volunteers. (STEM run was cancelled due to the weather anyway.)

met many new people all excited about volunteering… there were many raffles (although I didn’t win anything.)

  • Thursday – Back to the gym before work.

I squeezed in a run at lunch. (on my way home from the office)

a short one due to the humidity and the time factor

I thought that I would stop off to pick up my race bib/shirt/cookies but the expo didn’t open until 4 pm.  No worries… my friend said she would pick it up for me on her way to the trail run tonight.

swag = shirt, bread, cookies

Once my knee felt off, I immediately made an appt for today with my chiro.  I haven’t seen her in ages and she is leaving soon on maternity leave. Of course, nothing hurt anymore but I thought it a good idea to get all aligned so I didn’t cancel the appt.  She painfully worked on a tight leg muscle and my lower back… feeling great now!!

Then afterward, our first weekly trail run was held.  It was so fun to run with a group.  Although in my case, it’s more of a walk.

such a fun evening!!! and such beautiful scenery. Food/beer after wasn’t bad either.

  • Friday – Rest Day. LAST DAY for the gym.

and last gym selfie!!

In the evening, I volunteered at the expo for FRW race which would be held the next day before I headed to play mah jongg.

  • SaturdayRace Day – Freihofer Run for Women (FRW) – It was my 15th time running the race and it was just as much fun as the first time.

all women of all speeds and ages… so inspiring.

  • Sunday –  I started the day with a run since I went to brunch yesterday instead of running more miles.

great running weather and yes, that’s my shirt from the race the day before and a cardinal in the bird bath (upper right)

Then back up to the lake with my hubby and a friend.

This Coming Week on the Run–

  • Monday – run, belated B-day dinner

2022 Tropicool 5K Race Recap

MAY 15, 2022 – 7:30AM

As you may remember, this race took place during my annual non-running tennis vacation in Naples, Florida. I play tennis every morning and then spend the afternoon on the beach.  Each evening I go out for drinks, dinner and dessert with my tennis friends. Eight days of pure relaxation and enjoyment… (every May since 2005)

I love it.  It’s usually my only vacation that doesn’t include a race.  You have to admit that racing during a vacation does add an element of stress.

Well, in 2017. we changed our dates and I happened upon a 5k race that took place on the Sunday during our stay. One of my friends offered to get up at the crack of dawn and drop me off and another offered to pick me up.

Despite the loops and warm temps, I had a blast and did fairly well.

I also unexpectedly bumped into a tennis friend, Rebecca, who had moved to Naples.

As a result, I signed up for the same 5k in 2018 and 2019. I won an age group award each time and met up with Rebecca.

Our vacation was cancelled due to COVID in 2020 and the race in 2021 did not occur during our time in Naples.

So I was pretty excited to run this race again this year.  The downside was that Rebecca died suddenly in 2021 and I knew that the race would remind me of her sadly.

Pre-Race Activities and Preparations:

The day before the race, we went out to an awesome dinner which included a few glasses of wine.  (Oops I don’t usually drink the night before a race but I was on vacay…) Then we stopped at an ice cream shop.  Obviously, it turned out to be a later night than normal.

Here again is the description of the race and the course map:

Enjoy a wonderful 5K race that showcases the beautiful streets of Olde Naples. This course is two loops starting on Broad Street.

elevation according to Strava – FLAT!!

Race Day:

Sunday morning, I groggily ate my usual race breakfast at 5:30 am.  As she did in previous years, my friend Catalina agreed to drop me off at the race start.  I was familiar with the race location so I didn’t need to arrive as early as I did the first year.

Unlike previous years, I did not pick up my race packet the day before.  So I did it before the race. The swag was a towel (instead of a shirt).  It turned out to be very practical. I had to hide it under a tree since I did have a bag or a car.

Then I walked a block to the beach to hang out until around 7:15 am.

This was not a big race.  There were about 300 runners – all ages and very friendly.

The sun was now out and it was starting to get warm.  But it was not as warm as it could have been.  I checked the weather app on my phone. Holy cow!!! 77 degrees. 90% humidity!

I wore my usual race attire minus the compression socks –

no pink top this year

As you can see from the map, the course winds around town and through the neighborhoods twice. And it was flat!!

I had no plan for the race – just finish and get back to my tennis friends so we could get on with the day’s activities.

I race a lot.  But I haven’t raced in weather this warm since last August.

This made me a little nervous. Can I run well in the heat? Will I die? LOL

getting ready to start

Mile 1:

From the get go, my legs felt like lead but my biggest problem was that I had a hard time breathing and I felt dizzy. Was it the heat?  Most likely it was not being acclimated to the humidity. I couldn’t wait to get to the water stop…

Mile 2:

It seemed like forever but I think it was during mile 2.  I stopped for water and walked for a while (longer than normal).

I continued my running which was painful and seemed to be like a slog…

The course ran through neighborhoods with a few twists and turns and  then repeated itself.

I walked whenever I felt I had to… I really didn’t care about my time as long as I finished.

Mile 3 – 3.1:

I actually felt worse after walking so I ran and tried to just get to the finish line without puking.

If you look below, there was more walking in this mile even close to turning into the finish line.

Eventually the arch appeared and I gave it my all.

I was shocked when I crossed at 29:xx. I felt so much slower.

I have never been so sweaty after a race… glad I had that towel

As soon as I crossed, I saw my friend Pat who was picking me up.  I quickly checked the results to see if I won an award.

Senior Grand Masters winners (65+)

Post Race Activities:

I grabbed some water and some refreshments which was only bars and navel oranges. Oranges with no napkins = not a pretty sight!  I was super happy with my towel to wipe away the sweat.  Everyone looked as if they had jumped into a swimming pool.

Then I waited for my ride home and the awards.

doesn’t everyone dream of being on a podium one day?

First they announced the college scholarship winners:

the proceeds from this 5k went to these kids

with the winner of my age group

The age group award was a pint glass…

I have a zillion glasses but each one is memorable

Additional Race Reflections:

Definitely a tough one and one of my slowest 5ks in years but hey, I did it.

And I will do it again!

Racing for me is always enjoyable (at least afterward.)

Positives:

  • flat course
  • well organized
  • nice swag
  • practical age group awards
  • important charity (scholarships to HS students
  • Podium for winners

Negatives:

  • Rebecca was no longer there. 😦
  • Warm temps and humidity
  • Two Loops

Would I recommend this race?

Yes! There was a lot of enthusiasm and runners of all ages.

Weekly Run Down for 5.8.22-5.22.22: Florida Sun and Lots of Races

Everything about my Florida vacation was perfect – great weather, lots of running, tennis, and beach time, good food and quality time spent with good friends.  There was even a Broadway show, boat ride and French artist exhibit thrown into the mix.  Couldn’t have asked for more.

While I was gone, I also celebrated my birthday!! I entered the last year of my decade.

I think women runners are the only ones excited to turn 40, 50 or even 60 :) | Funny birthday message, Running humor, Runner quotes

And I ran a 5k in Florida.

May 15, 2022

Then when I returned, I ran a team 3.5 miler and today another half marathon.

Two Weeks Ago:

  • Sunday –  Mother’s Day and recovery from my mountain race the day before.

I started my day at the gym

sporting a Mother’s Day race shirt (from 2013)

Then I decided to take one last peak at the tulips in the park before the crowds arrived for the Tulip festival.

soooo pretty

After I finished packing, we visited my mother-in-law and then went out to dinner.

  • Monday – My BIRTHDAY.

My friends and I took a very early morning flight to Fort Myers, FL, rented two cars, stopped for a quick lunch and then drove to our two rented villas in Naples.

After a relaxing afternoon at the pool, it was time to celebrate.

I asked to have dinner (at the Ritz) at sunset…

and the food and the sky did not disappoint!

  • Tuesday – My friends started the day with a tennis lesson. However, I went for my first Florida run.

tough acclimating to the heat…. but I enjoyed all the flowers in bloom and the palm trees

After my run, I joined them for some tennis doubles (surprisingly I remembered how to play)

perfect beach weather and dinner at a French restaurant ❤

As planned, we spent the afternoon at the beach where we had lunch, chatted, cooled off in the Gulf, read, relaxed and planned dinner.

  • Wednesday –  I continued the pattern.

While my friends had a tennis lesson, I went for a run…

warmer every day so taking it slooow

After my run, I played doubles and then we took off for the beach

today we walked to a nearby restaurant to get some drinks

For dinner we drove to a Mediterranean restaurant in Estero (sorry no pix).

  • Thursday – As vacation protocol dictated, my friends took a tennis lesson while I ran (a different route each day)…

I joined them for tennis after changing out of my sweaty running clothes…

strangely it was just as warm in Albany, NY

Back to the beach for relaxing and cooling off..

However, tonight, we headed to Fort Myers for dinner theatre. The dinner buffet was excellent and the show (In the Heights) was fantastic.  I had seen it on Broadway and these performers were even better!!

  • Friday – Another pre-tennis run..

calling it a run may have been a stretch lol

Tonight was book club night. So instead of driving to a restaurant for dinner after the beach, we stayed at World Tennis Center and ate at their poolside restaurant.

I chose the book (because there was tennis element to it) but we all agreed after a lively discussion that this (Apples Never Fall) was not Moriarty’s best books.

  • Saturday – Since I had a race scheduled for the next day, I did not run but went for a long walk.

We played doubles after, of course but instead of going to the beach (since we had several activities scheduled for the evening), we stayed at the pool.

the guy in red on the top left was our tennis instructor

Lucky for me, in town there was a special Toulouse-Lautrec exhibit (love French art). There were over 150 of his drawings/posters.

After the museum, we walked to an Italian restaurant where we had a delicious dinner followed by Kilwin’s ice cream.

  • Sunday –  Race Day!  Tropicool 5k.

Note to self: schedule your race at the beginning of a vacation (when you are not exhausted.)

One friend dropped me off at the start….

I did my best… but it was so HUMID that I thought I would throw-up.

Not my fastest, for sure but I did win 2nd in the Senior Grand Masters Category.

a towel was appropriately the swag and my award was a pint glass.

Another friend picked me up after the race.   Believe it or not, I was just in time to join my friends for tennis.

We then ate a quick lunch before we headed to Punta Gorda for a boat ride on the Peace River.

Afterward, we walked/shopped at Fisherman’s Warf and then had dinner.

On our way home, we stopped to see a noted tennis person (who now lives in Naples). She owns an amazing house with unbelievable memorabilia (from tennis players and musicians.)

Last Week:

  • Monday – After a last morning walk, we headed to the airport where we returned our cars and had lunch before our flight home. Though there were predicted thunderstorms, we arrived home safely and just a little late.
  • Tuesday – Definitely needed a vacation after my vacation. I was pooped!

First thing- back to the gym after a week off.

Amidst the unpacking and laundry, I squeezed in a lunch run

lilac time!!

After work, I met some friends for a windy walk on the rail trail.

  • Wednesday – I considered another gym morning but I was exhausted from all that unpacking and laundry.  Returns from vacations are tiring.

I did gather up enough energy to join the STEM group after work for run/walk.

many women are lapsing into walking but I did try to get a few to run…

  • Thursday – Back to the gym on this rainy morning…

I was feeling headachy and worn out all day.  And when there was a late day shower, I decided that I would DNS tonight’s race (an evening one with teams that you work with)..

Then the rain stopped and the sun came out… a sign that I should just go… I could always walk it as many participants do.

So I parked in town and almost had to run 1 mile or so to meet my team.  I bumped into so many people that I knew at this race (almost 4,000 participated).  It was VERY humid so I took it slow… had a fun time.  So glad I didn’t stay home.

  • Friday – A true rest day after running 3 days in a row.

I started carb loading early – went out to dinner with family to celebrate my birthday and my hubby’s.

  • Saturday – Another rest day.

Originally I thought we’d go boating but it was my hubby’s b-day and he wanted to play tennis.

So I went to the gym…

then I joined my running friends (who had already run, walked or biked) for brunch.

The rest of the day was spent grocery shopping. cleaning and gardening (and sweating) …

Not very restful. lol

  • Sunday –  Race Day!  Steel Rail Half Marathon!!

This was my PR half marathon but back in 2017.

A lot has changed since then… a pandemic, over 30 half marathons and legs that are FIVE years older.

I do not expect to come even close to a PR especially since 90s are predicted (and the race doesn’t start until 9:30 am!!!!!).

But I do plan to have FUN (and hopefully not succumb to the heat)!

Stay tuned.  (Check out IG.)

This Coming Week on the Run–

  • Monday – gym, Freihofer Training Challenge Run (FTC)
  • Tuesday – rest day, walk, DOWNTON ABBEY movie!!
  • Wednesday – gym, STEM run
  • Thursday – run, belated B-day dinner out
  • Friday – gym, rest day, mah jongg
  • Saturday – rest day, walk, boating?
  • Sunday –  Miles on the Mohawk 10 Mile Race

Sasha’s Super Hero Run 5k Race Recap

MAY 1, 2022 – 9:30 AM – HALF MOON TOWN PARK

It is rare that lately I run a new race.  What I mean is not an “inaugural” race but a “new” race for me.  My running friends actually have run this race in the past but the date was never convenient for me.

my friend Sherry last year

But this year, I decided to make it happen because of the charity:  UKRAINE.  I know the race organizer from FTC.  And I chatted with her at a recent expo.

It would be a fun run since I haven’t trained for speed and I can’t remember the last 5k I’ve run… perhaps last fall?!

Yup – over 6 months ago….

Pre-Race Activities and Preparations:

Not much preparation for a 5k… my usual 3 mile weekly runs plus a long run on the weekend in preparation for a half marathon in THREE weeks.

In fact, I took Friday morning off from work to run my 11 mile long run so I would be free to run this race (even though, my legs would not be in tip top shape.)

Since my weekly long run was done, I was free to join my running buddies for a leisurely walk and brunch.

the Y now has normal ore-COVID hours so I was to workout first thing

I spent the rest of the day trimming bushes and weeding.  It seemed way more tiring and I was more sore than after my long run.  Good thing this 5k was just for fun

Here is the description of the race:

Sasha’s Superhero Run is a 5K run/walk and a kids run was organized by the family and friends of a local boy, Sasha, who passed away unexpectedly as a baby on Christmas Eve in 2016. The superhero theme of the event was adopted to honor all parents whose babies and children passed before their time…

Since Sasha’s family is Ukrainian, our 2022 event will be raising funds for the children of Ukraine, affected by the horrific war waged on its territory. The race proceeds will be split between the Global Ronald McDonald House Charities and few smaller local charitable organizations, based in Western Ukraine, providing direct assistance to displaced children and their families.

It is obvious why I picked this race (over several choices the previous day.)

The weather forecast seemed to be prefect – a little chilly but not much wind and sunny.

It may have been too cold for a skirt but I took the chance

I ate pizza for dinner as I do for any race (even though it was only 3 miles, lol)

Race Day:

I also had my standard breakfast of oatmeal and coffee.  I guess I’m a creature of habit.

I looked outside and there was frost on my lawn. What?  It was in the 30s though it would surely warm up by race time.

I impulsively added a long-sleeved shirt under my shirt,  DIY arm sleeves, a beanie and I even brought gloves.

This year, the race once again took place in Halfmoon Town Park (just a few miles up the road from the original location in Mechanicville).

I had never been there and wasn’t sure about the parking situation so I left early.

No problem at all. Plenty of signs and volunteers directing things.

empty start line

empty finish line

I picked up my bib and race shirt.

I walked to my car and left the shirt and got some money for the raffles (so many great prizes).

obligatory pre-race pic

Soon more runners arrived and I knew many of them.

Race Course (according the web site):

The out-and-back course starts and finishes in Halfmoon Town Park and has a series of rolling hills, with elevation changes just under 150ft. The start is at the north end of the park near the playground and proceeds south to Route 236. The course crosses NY 236 and turns left onto Hayner Rd, proceeding left onto Lower Newtown Road, where the course reverses direction and proceeds back to the start.

according to my Garmin

Soon it was time to line up at the start. And it was much warmer than when I arrived.  I didn’t have time to go back to my car so I stashed my cape (it would be too annoying to run with it) and my arm sleeves in one of those mini library stands.

The RD announced that the race had raised over $30,000for Ukraine.  She is Ukrainian and it was very emotional as she spoke.

Then they played the Ukrainian national anthem. Sniff. Sniff.

Mile 1:

The race was gun timed so I could have stood closer to the front.  But I am uncomfortable doing that and it really only makes a few seconds difference in my finish time.

There were about 250 in the race, many in costume and many walkers.  My legs definitely felt sluggish after lack of rest the past two days. But I tried to ignore it and just run.

It was only rolling hills at first.

But then…

Mile 2:

The hills arrived and I thought I could run up them…

Nope, I resorted to walking.

I also stopped at the water stop as it was feeling warm due to all that sun (and being overdressed a bit).

Eventually we turned around and the course repeated itself.

But why didn’t I feel speedy on those downhills?

Mile 3 – 3.1:

I was pooped…

I did my best but just didn’t have the mojo to go for it.

I walked several more times so at least I could sprint (and smile) going through the finish line.

I was pleased to see 28:XX on the clock.  I thought I was a lot slower.

Post Race Activities:

I retrieved my sleeves and cape.

I waited at the finish line cheering in my friends.

Then I grabbed some food – there was chocolate milk, snacks, bars fruit, etc.

I didn’t win any raffle prizes but my friend Judy did…

yes, that’s a $100 bill (but she donated it back)

Then I checked the results…

The prize was a certificate and a beautiful calendar with photos of Ukraine. No ceremony.

There were also two kids races scheduled next but we didn’t stick around.

This was such a great race for kids too.

It really is fun to race with your good friends.

Additional Race Reflections:

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this race. If I am around, I will probably run it again next year.

The past few years, I’ve mostly focused on half marathons.

Truthfully, I was a little nervous about how I would do in a 5k. Especially without doing any speedwork.

I have a ways to go if I want or can get back to 27 minute 5ks.  I need to either train to get faster or pace myself better so I don’t die during the last mile.

I am happy to be healthy, to be running regularly and interacting with others.

If my race times slow down, so be it.

Note to self: Do not wear a costume if you are serious about racing.  My h beanie kept flying off, my shirt was cotton so too hot. I didn’t wear my race belt so my phone & car key weighed down my skirt. Finally, those knee socks were not compression ones they kept falling down.  But it was fun dressing up!!

Positives:

  • Well organized race
  • Supported an important charity.
  • Well marked course with many course marshals
  • Great raffle prizes
  • Real restrooms
  • Lots of familiar faces.
  • Perfect weather
  • Immediate results
  • 5 year age groups for awards
  • Creative/meaningful awards

Negatives:

  • Too much walking
  • Hills (but few races are totally flat)
  • Gun Time
  • Shirts ran small.
  • Costume annoyances (my fault)
  • Lack of hill training (my fault)

Would I recommend this race?

Yes!!

There is really nothing negative to say about this race.

Final Stats:

same pace as last weekend’s 5 miler though 2 miles shorter, it was hiller

Splits:

ok… who walks 5 times in a 5k???

Next Up:

A race almost 6 miles up a mountain, then a sweaty 5k in Fla, followed by a local 3.5m team race and finally a half marathon.
