Ultimate Coffee Date – June

Confessions of a Mother Runner

Since today is the first Saturday in June, I am joining up with Coco & Deborah for their ultimate coffee date.

Over coffee or tea…

I’d tell you that my free 3 month gym membership ends today and if I complete my race (Freihofer’s Run for Women), I get another 3 months.

So far, it’s working out. I’ve used the machines at least once a week…sometimes even twice. That’s impressive for me! I’ve not taken any classes. None that interest me fit into my schedule.

Over coffee and tea…

I’d tell you that I am enjoying not having to train for anything.  I can skip runs and run on the weekend whatever distance I choose.  (Oh wait, I always do that LOL).

Seriously, I don’t feel guilty if I only run 4 miles on a Saturday.  But I do have a HILLY 10 miler at the end of this month so I guess I better get out there.

Over coffee and tea…

I’d tell tell you that I am going to miss my group runs.  Both the Freihofer’s and STEM weekly runs are over.  There won’t be anything until September. I am used to not running alone.  I got spoiled.

A group at work says they want to run weekly but they are not very serious (Only one person showed up last week.).  Hopefully Alyssa will keep me company.  Maybe even Barbara?

Over coffee and tea…

I’d tell you that I was just in NYC for work.  I arrived Wednesday and the first I did after checking into my hotel was RUN! I also ran after work on Thursday.  I LOVE RUNNING IN NYC!! I was tempted to run again yesterday but decided to save my legs for today’s 5k.

Over coffee and tea…

I’d tell you that I am also going to NYC for work June 19-21 and July 5-7.  Of course, I tried to find a race during that time.  And there is an informal 5k in Brooklyn on July 5 at 7:10 pm.

Yes, I did sign up…. (only cost $7.50)

Over coffee and tea…

I’d tell you that I am a ZOOMA ambassador. Of course, that means that I promote and run their races.

The first one is tomorrow in Annapolis – a half marathon and a 10k.

I have a local 5k today so I guess I will have to add a 5k to my 5k to do the ZOOMA Annapolis Virtual 10K.

Over coffee and tea…

I’d tell you that boating on Lake George has started.  I have been on our boat the past two weekends.  Now I have to coordinate running/racing with boating and the weather.

Shape Women’s Half Marathon Race Recap

Image result for shape women's half marathon

I had always wanted to run a half marathon in NYC.  Every year, I enter the lottery for the NYC Half but so far, I have not gotten in.  So my running friend, Alyssa suggested that we instead run the Shape Women’s Half Marathon. I don’t like loops and this race has two plus I didn’t want to limit my running to just Central Park. But I gave in and signed up.

We had planned to share a hotel room and spend the weekend together. Then several months ago, Alyssa found out that she couldn’t go that weekend.  Luckily, I found two other runners (Sue and Ginny)who nicely agreed to letting me crash in their hotel room.

Half Marathon Training

If you read my blog, you know that my training included ZERO long runs but lot’s of races.

Yes, I got miles on the legs but for the first time, I didn’t get my 12 miler done and the longest continuous run was 6 miles.

I was still excited to run the race but I was not expecting to have a fast time and was hoping that it wouldn’t be too painful.

I had only heard good things about the race so I tried to be optimistic about running two loops of the park and about the ginormous hills.

The Shape Half Marathon is billed as “one of the largest women’s-only half-marathons in the country.” Amy Robach, News Anchor of ABC News’ “Good Morning America” was scheduled to host and participate in this year’s race. She was supposed to split the 13.1-mile course with Sara Haines, Co-Host of “The View” and ABC Correspondent. (I usually watch the Today show on NBC.  NBC’s Natalie Morales hosted last year and ran the whole thing.)

According to the website, the race started on West Drive at 63rd Street, and then looped counterclockwise twice around the Park and ended around 72nd.

This was the course:

And this is the elevation map:

yikes!!

Hills or no hills, I planned to enjoy the views and scenery in Central Park and drag myself to the finish line.  Walking up Cat and Harlem Hills would probably happen.  I was ok with it.

Pre-Race Activities and Preparations

Sue, Ginny and I debated about how to get to NYC, –  bus, drive/MetroNorth or Amtrak.

Since it was cheaper, Sue wanted to drive 1 1/2 hours and then take MetroNorth right to our hotel.  At the last minute, Ginny decided not to come since she was injured and could not run the race.  So it was just Sue and I.  She picked me up at 7 am and we drove to Beacon (was supposed to be Poughkeepsie but we missed the exit).  From there, we took the MetroNorth train to 125th St., Harlem where Sue had booked a hotel room.

hanging with my Starbucks & Fredrick Douglas in Harlem wearing my Crocs

We finally arrived around 11 am in NYC and had to walk almost a mile to our hotel.  We left off our bags there since our room wasn’t ready and decided to walk to packet pick-up. It was such a beautiful day so I thought why not? (I stupidly changed from my sandals to my Crocs flip flops because they are usually so comfortable.)

Remember our hotel was located on 124th St and packet pick up was on 57th street. That was about 5 miles and about half way, my heels were screaming.  Who wears flip flops to walk around Manhattan?  This idiot!

just love some the buildings on Central Park West

When we arrived at Columbus Circle (59th St), I begged to go to a running store to buy some shoes.  Best decision ever.  They gave out free delicious cookies and mimosas plus everything was 15%.  But even better was that the new version of my running shoes (Nike Zoom Vomero 12s) fit just like the 10s that I love.  My feet were happy.  (Sort of.  The damage to my heels was already done unfortunately).

Next stop was lunch at Whole Foods.  I would have carb loaded but Sue had a salad so I felt guilty and had one too.

Finally we arrived at the expo which wasn’t really an expo.  We just got our shirts and bibs and snapped a picture.

with my new running shoes…

You’d think that we had done enough walking but no, we decided to walk back to the hotel but through park rather than on Central Park West.

notice the sign!

At least, I was wearing better shoes for walking and the weather was gorgeous.  We were hoping that it would not be 80 degrees the next day for our race.

Finally we arrived back at the hotel to check in and only had a little time to relax since we had planned to meet Sue’s running friend Maureen and Maureen’s two daughters for dinner.

And no we didn’t walk to the restaurant.  We took the subway to Columbus Circle.  Well, it turned out that the restaurant was on Columbus Ave.  We quickly called an Uber and still arrived in plenty of time.

The restaurant was Italian (Osteria Cotta) and recommended by Maureen’s daughter who lives in Manhattan.  And it didn’t disappoint.  The food was amazing as well as the wine.  (I normally don’t drink the night before a race but I just got into the spirit.)  It was such a fun evening.  Of course, we talked about the race since all 5 of us women were running it.

After dinner we went out for an amazing dessert – cereal milk at Momofuku Milk Bar.

this was HALF of a small dish

No more walking for me.  We took the subway back to the hotel.  Over 11 miles walked for the day!  The day before our half marathon!!!

So we laid out our clothes and tried to get some shut eye.

everything had already gone wrong so why not wear a new top and new shoes??

I hardly ever get much sleep the night before a big race.  And that night, it was no different except that in the middle of night, I started to get a painful sore throat and was feeling feverish.  Yes, I was getting sick.  Ugh!

Race Day

So 5:30 am came early on Sunday morning. I felt like crap but it was race day.  And inspite of my sore throat and heels that were painful to walk on, I was excited to run. I brought my breakfast from home (oatmeal) so I was content.

We grabbed a Uber to the race start (64th St.) and got there around 7 am.  The race was not scheduled to begin until 8 am so we had plenty of time to hang out. It was quite chilly – about 30 degrees colder than Saturday.  I shivered but knew that I would warm up once I started running.

my DIY sleeves at least kept me a little warm

Soon it was time to head to the start to line up. I was supposed to start in Corral I and Sue in Corral L but Maureen and her daughters asked us to meet them in Corral H so we waited for them there.  They apparently arrived at the last minute and we never connected before the race.

aren’t they are cute family?

The race is a blur as usual but here’s how I remember it:

Miles 1-3:

9:51, 9:48, 9:42

Like any race, the first mile/mile-and-a-half, was a big congested. My heels were hurting but I was still able to run at a decent pace. It didn’t take me long to get warm and roll down my sleeves.  The hills were rolling but they didn’t seem too bad. The weather was perfect.  When the sun came out, I was glad that there seemed to be water stops at every mile.  I stopped and walked at each one as per my plan.  During this stretch, I caught up to Maureen and her daughters.  We ran together for a while.  They said that they were taking it easy but I knew that their slow pace would in no time be too fast for me. So at the second water stop, I waved good-bye and said that I’d meet them at after party by the band shell.

So the first few miles were wonderful. All the trees had blossomed and it was just a picture-perfect day. I started looking around at all the women around me and felt so inspired. This is an all women’s race which makes it special. There were tutus and bright colors and women cheering on other women. It was just so upbeat and empowering!

Miles 4-6:

10:30, 11:33, 10:15

As usual, after the first few miles, I started slowing down. The first big challenge, Harlem Hill was no joke – about a half mile of steepness. All the volunteers along the hill were great, though, cheering us on and telling us we were almost at the top (I appreciated their lies LOL). It was nice to know that once I reached the top of the hill, the hardest part of the course was over. Until, of course, I had to conquer it again on the second lap.

During this stretch, a runner trying to clip the tangent, tripped another runner in front of me.  She went down hard and almost took me down.  But I stayed upright. I helped her up. She was scraped up but ok to continue running. I took advantage of this long break to have my first GU.  (Chocolate which is not what I  wanted.  What happened to salted caramel?? And my faux pas keep coming… it made me feel sick.)

I finally removed (with lots of difficulty) my sleeves and continued to pick up my skirt which was always falling down.  At least, I was half done.  One more loop to go…

Miles 7-9:

10:25, 10:52, 10:46

At this point in the race, my legs told me that I should have trained better.  They were tired.  But my heels stopped hurting and the balls of my feet ached especially the the left one that always seems to bother me. (It’s bunion related.) I think I was putting more pressure there to avoid the heel pain.

So I was now obviously starting the second loop of the course. Let me tell you, I noticed a lot of smaller hills that I did NOT notice the first time around. There were the same big hills as the first loop and I did the same – run, walk, run walk. The downhills were great but there always seemed to be another hill…the hills would not stop!!

Also I wore my new Garmin that I hadn’t worn since my last half marathon.  And the same thing happened.  It restarted at around mile 6 so it was no use.  I knew roughly where I was since there were clocks at 5k, 10k, 15k markers and I knew I was running at a slow pace – at what pace, I had no idea.  Good thing, this wasn’t a PR attempt. (Yes, I know that I should have tested it out before the race..)

Miles 10-12

11:40, 11:44, 11:04

Slow, slow, and even slower. I probably would  have run faster if I actually knew my pace.

I took one more Gu (chocolate peanut butter)…yuck!  Now I had a stomach ache for the rest of the race.  (More like a side stitch.)  But at least I never got my usual late mile back ache (Thanks Nike!)

After the second time up Harlem Hill, I told myself that it was almost over and then it was only 3 miles to the finish.  But it was the longest 3 miles ever and I walked more than I usually do in a half marathon. And not just the water stops.  Mile 11 felt 5 miles long (obviously, it was only 1 mile long). I just kept waiting for the 12-mile marker and it just wouldn’t come. I kept my spirits up by high-fiving every little kid that reached out on the sidelines. Thanks for the energy, kiddos!  The crowd support for the race was great.

Mile 13- 13.2:

11:01, ??

Finally, I was turning the corner to the last mile leg of the race and then the finish line was in sight.  I saw the clock in the distance and sprinted as fast as I could. I crossed around 2:23:xx which turned out to be 2:20:49 chip time. Not the time I am capable of but considering everything working against me, it was a solid effort and I was pleased.

I got my medal and my heat sheet. I didn’t really need a heat sheet because it was so nice out but took it as a souvenir and headed to find friends and food.

Post Race:

At the food area, there wasn’t much that interested me. I took a bagel and headed toward the band shell to wait for Sue and find Maureen and her daughters.

There were some food samples and a band playing.  I had some grapefruit juice and hung out as they announced the awards.  Deena Kastor won again with a 1:16:xx time.  Amazing!!

I kept texting Sue so we could meet up and to back to the hotel.  Well, it turned out that she didn’t bring her phone.  Duh?

But I did connect with one of the former STEM participants who had run the race. So happy to see her!!

Eventually, I left and took the subway solo back to the hotel.

After a long, hot shower, Sue and I went out for a delicious brunch before we took that long walk to the train station and headed back home..

yummy!!!

Additional race reflections:

The Good:

  • Organized packet pick-up.
  • Lots of porta potties at the start and throughout the course
  • Beautiful course through scenic Central Park
  • Lots of water stops (almost every mile) and all had Gatorade.
  • The runners and their contagious excitement.
  • Great crowd support along the course.
  • No major injuries (just the feet!)
  • Perfect weather.
  • Love my new running shoes.

The Bad:

  • Two Loops – just not a fan
  • The Hills.
  • No expo.
  • My skirt kept falling down.
  • My training was lacking.

The Ugly:

  • Cat and Harlem Hills and having to run up them TWICE

Would I recommend this race?

Yes, definitely.

Overall, I really loved this race. The course was beautiful yet challenging. The day was beautiful. The energy of the volunteers and all the women running was spectacular.

Final Stats:

out of 6,983 finishers

Next Up:

May 21 – Steel Rail Half Marathon in Adams, MA

So no break in my training,  This one will be flat and on the same course as the Ramblefest Half Marathon that I ran in October. I am looking forward to it.  A nice (but not too warm) day would be welcomed.

December Recap

10 Things We Love The Most About December

Where has the time gone?.  I can’t believe that it is almost 2017. Wasn’t it just December 1?.

Anyway, here’s how December went down:

Weekday Runs:

We’ve been lucky and it’s hasn’t been cold or snowy of a December. So I was able to run at least 3 times outdoors each week which is great because I do not have a treadmill at home.

I ran mostly at UAlbany (near work). It’s easier than driving to run. Plus, it’s now dark when I get out of work.

I ran mostly alone.  Barbara was injured.  Alyssa was busy and I was in Florida for 5 days.

It’s definitely more fun running with friends. I hope I get to do that more next month.

Long Runs:

There were none! Just a half marathon!! Taking a break until mid-January.

Total Mileage:

I ran 69 miles this month –  My lowest monthly total of the year.  But I did run over 1000 miles for the year!! Woo Hoo! For the first time ever.

img_3429

Started out the year with my highest monthly total and ended with the lowest. LOL

2016

Races:

I only ran two races this month – a half marathon and a 5k.

I was generally happy with how they buth went. I won my age group in the half marathon and the 5k was just pure fun.

Cross Training:

I still play tennis (indoors now.) I am scheduled to play two Tuesdays a month but do get called to sub on some of the other weeks.

I actually went to workout at the gym ONCE!! Just I know – shocker!

I did walk almost every day at lunch for 30 minutes – Either around the outdoor shopping mall or to get a Starbucks coffee

Other News:

I went on the most awesome Girls Weekend Race-cation.  #HoLottaFun

I also spend a day in NYC taking in all the holiday sights.

I spent time with Amanda (my mentee).

There was a lot of holiday partying and eating but I won’t get into that.

Feeling healthy so Life Is Good.

Looking Ahead:

My next half marathon is not until March 5 in Florida where I will be visiting a few friends.

I only have a few races coming up. Things slow down around here when it gets cold.

This is my list so far for the next 2 months:

  • 01-01-17 – HMRRC Winter Series #2 – 3.5M
  • 01-15-17 – HMRRC Winter Series #3  – 10K
  • 01-29-17 –  HMRRC Winter Series #4  – 15K
  • 02-05-17 – HMRRC Winter Series #5  – 10M

All these races are FREE!!

No monthly goals.

This motto worked for 2016 so I’m sticking with it in 2017!

Happy Running! How did your December turn out? Anything exciting planned for January?

Monday Running Update

Last Week:

  • Monday – I used to run in Washington Park after work all the time.  But now that I changed jobs, I usually don’t feel like driving there and UAlbany is much closer. Tonight I decided to run there because I wanted to see the holiday light displays.

  • Tuesday – Just a Rest day. I took a wet walk at lunch and I didn’t even play tennis.  I did some errands and finished packing for my trip.
  • Wednesday – Due to the rainy forecast, I had planned to get up early to run but it was just too dark and foggy…  So another rest day with no burning off calories consumed at my monthly dinner out with my tennis friends.

  • Thursday – Not ideal but I felt I had to get some miles in so I squeezed in a short one before my flight.

Judy & I flew (via Atlanta) to Panama City Beach, FL. No travel issues and Holly was nice enough to pick us up at the airport and drive us to her house where we would be staying for the next 5 days.

  • Friday – Rest day but a busy day with bib pickup, carb loading and hanging out with 7 other awesome bloggers.

  • Saturday – We ran the Panama City Beach Half Marathon.  We all finished – there wer sone PRs and I even won my age group.  We all had a blast. Then we celebrated, of course.

  • Sunday – We started the day with a walk to get donuts followed by a short slow recovery run with a view of the ocean.

that’s WALK not work

20 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday – 6 mile run in Fl, fly home
  • Tuesday – Rest day, tennis
  • Wednesday – 4 mile run
  • Thursday – 4 mile run
  • Friday – Rest day, holiday party at work, mah jongg chez moi

Ultimate Coffee Date – December

Confessions of a Mother Runner

Since today is the first Saturday in December, I am joining up with Coco & Deborah for their ultimate coffee date.

Over coffee or tea…

I’d tell you that when they first told me that I was spending two 5 day stints in Manhattan for work, I was bummed.  I would miss my training group runs, my running partners, my tennis games, etc. And I would be stuck indoors from 8 am – 4 pm every day.

But now I am bummed that they won’t be sending me back to NYC.  In the future, I will taking day trips to places in Upstate New York – not scenic and only for one night. No fun!

  • I loved the view from my hotel room.
  • I walked everywhere. Never had to drive or take public transportation.

I walked to work and back – at least one mile each way.  I took a walk during lunch.  In the evenings, I walked all around the city including Bryant Park, Rockefeller Center and Times Square.

  • I squeezed in a run whenever I could.

I ran after work, before work and even during lunch.

  • I got to do some cool things in my free time.

I took a ride on the Sea Glass Carousel at Battery Park, saw a Broadway show both weeks and ate some great NYC food (Greek, pizza, bagels & lox, crepes, and more.)

Over coffee and tea…

I’d tell you that I am Star Obsessed.  That’s collecting stars from Starbucks so I can get free coffee. Except that it’s not really free because I have to spend money to earn stars.  But there are always perks to earn extra stars and I’m on it!

Over coffee and tea…

I’d tell you that I usually enjoy decorating for the holidays.  I celebrate both Chanukah and Christmas but most of my decorations are non-denominational -Snowmen everywhere.

pic from last year

This year, I just don’t feel holly jolly.  (The election results, perhaps?)

Anyway, my house has no decorations yet.  The only thing I’ve done is buy a few gifts and make my photo holiday cards.

Over coffee and tea…

I’d tell you that I am in Florida right now.  I am about to run my 23rd Half Marathon in Panama City Beach. I don’t know how the race will turn out but spending the weekend with fellow bloggers Holly, Tricia, Wendy, Marcia, Mary Beth, Karen and Judy promises to be a blast!

Monday Running Update

ru

Last Week:

  • Monday – I arrived in NYC this afternoon for work.  As soon as I checked into my hotel, I took off for a run.  I headed toward the Hudson River.  I planned on 3 miles but with all the stopping for lights and photo ops, it was 5 slow ones.

After dinner, since it was a warm evening, I went for a walk to Bryant Park and hung out there for awhile.

  • Tuesday – It was pouring during my long walk to work.  But it stopped so I could take a stroll during lunch.

This cup brightened my wet morning walk

That evening, I went out to dinner with some other trainers.

view from my hotel room. Different color every night.

  • Wednesday – I had left my work clothes at work the day before so that I could get up early and run along the East River before work.  And it was amazing.  I could have run forever but I had to return to work by 8 am 😦 )

After dinner (NYC pizza – yummy!), I walked to Times Square.  I wanted to get cheap tix to The Big Comet, but when I found out that Josh Groban called in sick, I went next door and got tix for Dear Evan Hansen which was in previews.  Great decision! The show as awesome (and tix were more than 50% off.)

adding to my red cup collection when killing time before the show

  • Thursday –  Today I decided to bring running clothes to work so I could run during lunch.  I ran the same place as Wednesday morning but a shorter route since I didn’t need to run as far to get to the river and I ran in the opposite direction.

img_3177

I had still hopes of seeing Josh Groban but he was still sick. So I walked around Times Square, Rockefeller Center and Bryant Park… Taking in this warm weather and walking ops. (Returning to normal life soon! 😦 )

  • Friday –  Last day of work in NYC.  No running today but a walk to/from work and a long one during lunch.

Then that evening, I took the train back home.

  • Saturday – Today I went to a 5k that I would not be racing. Instead I would be helping a STEM runner complete her first 5k.  Much more rewarding than any PR I’ve ever had.

When I was done, though I didn’t feel like it, I ran some more miles so this could count as a long run. Thanks Judy for the company on 7 of those miles.

  • Sunday – Rest day and catching up after being away for 5 days. Good thing since it seems like winter arrived. That afternoon, I played mah jongg and int he evening, we all went out to dinner (Chinese of course) to celebrate out 8th anniversary of playing mah jongg together.

the whole gang minus 2

25.5 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday – last Troy Training Challenge Group Run (3-4 miles)
  • Tuesday – 3 miles, tennis
  • Wednesday – rest, mall walk with bff
  • Thursday – 10K race followed by a 5K race
  • Friday – rest, mah jongg

Dash to the Finish Line 5K Race Recap & TOLT

I witnessed the end of this race on a trip to NYC in 2013.

DSC04234

near the marathon finish line (2013)

That day, I knew that I wanted to run this race. It didn’t work out in 2014 but last year I signed up and ran the race by myself.

dttf1

finished in 28:59.

I had so much fun that I decided to do it again.

I had reserved a room for the night before the race in an AirBnB apartment. However, that was before my friend, Anna from Moscow, decided to come and run and she invited her two Russian friends (Julia living in Chicago & Tatiana in DC) to also run the race.  So I cancelled my AirbnB reservation and decided to stay in Anna’s hotel and room with Julia.

Once everyone arrived (except Julia), we headed to the Javitz Center where the NYC Marathon expo was being held.

Of course, it was huge and crowded. Most people who were there were running the Marathon. We picked up our race packets for the 5k and walked around checking out the booths. Though tempted, I didn’t buy a thing. Then we went out for a late dinner in Chelsea.

After a sleepless night, I made my usual oatmeal & tea breakfast in the room and we walked to the start line.  The benefit of this hotel was that it was about 5 minutes away.

image

the start line in front of the UN

It was chilly to start which made it tricky to decide what to wear.  I am a firm believer in layers.  However, the problem would be that at this point-to-point race, I wouldn’t have access to a jacket after the race.

We got there early enough and wandered around taking photos.

The corrals were lettered A-Z depending your pace. I was in G last year but for some strange reason, this year I was in I. The Russian girls were in J. Judy was in K.

no, we didn’t plan to wear the same outfits….

I texted Judy and we were able to meet up briefly near Corral G before heading to our respective corrals. Since we are both Skirt Sports ambassadors, we knew it was bound to happen that we wore the same thing. 🙂

Soon, it was time to get ready to run the race. I took off my throw away shirt, tied my jacket around my waist (for later).  I decided not to walk back to corral I but stayed in G.  There were many runners from various corrals there anyway.

everyone was in such a great mood!

There were almost 11,000 runners from 130 countries. The energy was so contagious. Some runners were there to have fun and dressed up in costume. Others were warming up for the marathon the next day and there were also runners like me who couldn’t run 26.2 miles so ran 3.1 instead.

Finally it was time to start but of course, it took a while for me to cross the start line. It was slow going at first but I just tried to enjoy the experience and pick up some speed at the same time. I knew I would slow down when I met the hills of Central Park.

This was the course:

Mile 1: We started at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza on 47th Street between First and Second avenues and headed south. Then we turned right on 42nd Street and headed west. We passed Grand Central Station, the Chrysler Building, Bryant Park. Next we turned right onto Sixth Avenue.

Mile 2: We proceeded up Sixth Avenue toward Central Park. We passed Radio City, the Plaza hotel and lots of screaming spectators and then turned right on Central Park South/59th Street. Finally we turned left into Central Park at Grand Army Plaza.

dttfl16-1

Mile 3: We entered the park, then turned left onto West Drive. We ran those rolling hills and curved around the bottom of the park eventually finishing at the NYC Marathon finish line, on West Drive at 67th Street.

I felt perfectly dressed, even a little warm at times. It was close to 50 degrees at the start and by the end of the day, it was in the 60s (much warmer than predicted.) At the water stop (which I didn’t stop at), there was a wall of people just stopped but I just smiled and weaved around them. The hills in Central Park slowed me down a little but I didn’t walk and they weren’t as bad as I had remembered. I was thrilled to see the finish line but I just couldn’t muster up a real sprint.  There were so many people in MY WAY!

dttfl16-2

I couldn’t tell by the clock at the finish line but I checked my watch and I did finish in less than 29 minutes!! I was surprised.

I had fun running this race as I did last year. I never looked at my Garmin and really didn’t care about time (plus because of the tall buildings, you lose the signal so the pace isn’t accurate anyway). I knew that my first mile was slow because you just couldn’t start running for a while. Even after that, I had to weave through the crowds throughout the WHOLE race. The race seemed so much more crowded that last year.  Runners were taking pics and selfies.  Many times they just stopped dead to take a pic. It was frustrating.  I am glad that I was just running this race for fun and not trying for a PR.

Happy to be done!

Once you crossed the finish line, they handed you a bag of food and ushered you along. I decided to ignore the volunteers & police and stay put on the side by the medical tent.  I wanted to see Judy finish (but I did not).  I did bump into another Skirt Sports ambassador — from my area no less.

shocked to see Elenora!!

And I did catch my Russian friends as they crossed the finish line together.

capture

of course, the first thing you do after to cross the finish line is check your phone.

It was so much fun to run with these first time NYC racers!!

For a race this big, I thought that it was very organized.  We all agreed that it was so much fun!

my yogi friends

I am glad I could share their first NYC race experience

I was never able to run fast during the race (due to the hoards of runners in my way) and when I finished, I didn’t feel like I had run a race. I didn’t even break a sweat.  (I see a re-do in my future.)

Splits: (though I doubt any are accurate.)

2015 / 2016

mile 1 – 9:41 / 9:52
mile 2 – 8:23 / 8:59
mile 3 – 9:15 / 9:12
.14 – 9:05 / 8:23

28:59 / 28:56 (chip time)

3 second course PR!!!

I was also surprised that I was 5th (out 189) in my AG.

After the race, we all headed over Columbus Circle where I had made reservations for brunch in a French restaurant.

celebrating…mimosas at 10 am?  why not?

Still on a race high, the girls went shopping, but I decided to remain in the park and run/walk (more walk than run).  The weather was great and I thoroughly enjoyed being outdoors.

Eventually I had to leave and walk (miles) back to the hotel to change and get ready for my blogger meet-up, dinner and Broadway show.

It was great to meet Karen and her husband and to wish her luck on her marathon the next day.

A full and exciting day!!!

Julia left early the next morning and Tatiana slept in. So Anna and I went running alone.  I wanted to run in Riverside Park and on the Hudson River Greenway.  So we took the subway there and ran 3 miles along the river.  It was so much fun.  Actually even more enjoyable than the race.

Then we decided to spectate at the NYC Marathon.  We couldn’t stay long because we had to meet Tatiana for lunch and I had to catch the train home.  But we did see the cyclists and the female winner. The excitement in air was incredible.  I wished I could have stayed longer to catch some of my friends who were running in the race.

Originally, I wasn’t very excited about returning to NYC again but I am glad I did go.  I had a great time.  The Russian girls are already planning another race weekend together … the BAA 5k in Boston on April 15, 2017.

Since it is Thursday,  I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

thinking out loud

Here’s what I’m thinking about today:

  • How the f#### did Trump win the election!? It’s gonna be a long 4 years!
  • Why did I sign up for a race tomorrow?  It would be nice to sleep in on my day off.
  • I wish that I felt more prepared to run a 15k race on Sunday. Lately I’ve only been running 3 miles. Never got my long run in last weekend.
  • If only I could drag myself out of bed at 5 am and run before work. It’s hard to find lit up places to run after work. I’m getting a little bored of UAlbany campus.

Happy Running! Did you run or race this past weekend? Ever race in NYC? Do you run in the morning or evening?

Monday Running Update

ru

Last Week:

  • Monday – I was planning to go to my Troy Turkey Trot training group run after work but I bailed.  It was cold. I was tired and no one was home to hand out Halloween candy, etc.  In others words, I wimped out.
  • Tuesday –  I felt guilty that I didn’t run yesterday so I ran before tennis. (I had burn off the calories that I would consume at dinner after tennis.)

  • Wednesday – I was scheduled to meet Alyssa at UAlbany for 2 loops of the campus before running with the STEM group. But her son was sick so I was solo.  The first loop was slooow.  Then the 2nd loop was sloooower but I perked up running with the STEM ladies (I guess I need company) and I celebrated by meeting a friend out for wine & appetizers.

It was in the 60s and I ran in a tee shirt …in November!!

  • Thursday – A rainy day and I had a hair appt.  So an unscheduled rest day. (There are few things more important than running and hair color is one of them. LOL)
img_2878

what a dreary day!

  • Friday – Hopped the train to NYC and met up with my Russian friend Anna. I stayed overnight and shared a room with Anna’s friend. No time for a run today either.

  • Saturday – Dash to the Finish Line 5K race. I ran 3.1 miles from the UN to the NYC Marathon finish line (with over 10,000 other runners) including Anna, her 2 Russian friends and Judy.

No, Judy & I didn’t plan our matching outfits. The race was so crowded that I am proud of my 28:56 finish. Actually had even more fun after the race with my Russian friends.

The park was beautiful. Met Judy & Karen and saw Paramour- Cirque du Soleil

We celebrated with brunch and mimosas. Then I continued to run/walk in the park followed by dinner and a show with the girls.

  • Sunday – Still in NYC. Anna and I started the day with a run along the Hudson. Then we went to Central Park to watch the early marathon finishers.

Riverside Park and running along the river was awesome

After lunch, I headed to train station to go home.

18 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday – Troy Turkey Trot Training group run (3-4 miles)
  • Tuesday – rest, tennis
  • Wednesday3 mile runSTEM run
  • Thursday – rest, mall walk with BFF
  • Friday  – day off – 5k race
  • Saturday – rest
  • Sunday – 15k race

Monday Running Update

ru

Last Week:

  • Monday – I took the train to NYC (I had to go there for work), ditched my luggage at my hotel and took off for a walk, some ice cream and a run.  My hotel was a mile from the Hudson so I decided to run in that direction. It’s quite a challenge running on the crowded sidewalks and stopping at every corner.

Walking around Madison Square Park

Running on the Hudson River Greenway & then the High Line

View from my hotel window

  • Tuesday – I walked to and from the training that I would be watching all week. After the training, I changed into my running clothes and got in a run before it got dark. Then I went out to dinner (at a Greek restaurant) with 2 co-workers and to a costume exhibit at FIT.

Morning view from my hotel room

Lunch time walk and view of the East river.

  • Wednesday – More  of the same. A short walk at lunch and then a run after work. Today I decided to run to Battery Park (and it was much farther than I thought. ) I took a ride on the sea glass carousel and then took the subway back to the hotel.

  • Thursday – A rainy day. A short lunch walk in the rain but NO after  work run.  Instead I walked in the pouring rain to Times Square, got cheap tix to a show, had dinner, saw the show and walked back to the hotel in the rain. Lots of steps.

Saw The Humans

  • Friday – My last work day in the city. I changed into my running clothes and ran along the East River during lunch. Cool and windy but so needed.

  • Saturday –  I had a planned day at Ellms Family Farms with my mentee and her two sons. Not the best weather. Cold damp windy. I guess it was a rest day but running after 2 young kids all day was fun but not restful.

  • Sunday – It was an exhausting week.  I was tired so I decided not to run a race.  I know “Shocking.” Instead I decided to do a Long Run. Again a sunny day would have been nice but the temps were perfect. Unfortunately I was overdressed and underfueled but I chose my favorite location and got it done..

Scenes from the Zim Smith Trail and Round Lake

It was a struggle but some runs are like that.

I was starved. I ate this after chicken dumpling soup.  The sticky bun at Leah’s didn’t disappoint.

25 miles done with 5 runs and 2 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday – Troy Turkey Trot Training group run (3-4 miles)
  • Tuesday – tennis
  • Wednesday – run + STEM (8 miles)
  • Thursday – hair appt
  • Friday – train to NYC
  • Saturday – 5K race (in NYC) + more miles?
  • Sunday – rest or a long run

Belated Runfessions – October

It’s that time again.  Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

Sorry I’m a little late on this one…

I runfess…

I was in NYC for work for 5 days this past week.  I didn’t bring my laptop but I did have my iPad.  So I could have.  But I didn’t feel like blogging. So I skipped WW, TOLT and Friday Five. Just needed a breather. Ever feel blogged out?

I runfess…

Though I was in NYC for work, my mind was fixated on “Where and when can I run today?

It’s not easy in a strange city when you have little free time.

img_2771

sometimes you just have to miss lunch

I had hoped to do the following:

  • run along the Hudson River
  • run along the East River
  • run to Battery Park
  • run in Central Park

I did accomplish the first three.

I runfess…

I ran four races this month.  Remember I suffer from the FOMO disease.

img_2617

even raced in these horrible conditions

I almost ran one this weekend too. But I felt guilty neglecting my mentee and her kids so I spent time with them on Saturday.  I just wish my running friends would not post pix from their races on FB when I don’t run.  LOL.

I runfess…

I choose my long run locations based on the post run fueling options.  Don’t you?

img_2847

chocolate milk and a sticky bun

I runfess…

I signed up for 6 races in November!! Yes, six!  a 10k, a 15k, and 4 5ks. At least none of them is a half marathon.  This just means that my long runs may be non-existent.

ttt2

the Troy turkey trot 10k is one of my favorites

I runfess…

I have a 5k in NYC this Saturday. The logistics for the weekend will be crazy – getting there, checking into my airbnb apt, meeting my friend from Russia, getting my bib, getting to the race, planning a blogger meet-up, getting my luggage, getting home, etc.  There’s a 5k somewhere in the mix. I haven’t given the race a second thought.  It’s just for fun.  I would love to spectate the NYC marathon on Sunday but I don’t have a place to stay Saturday night.  (Any offers?)
