Pandemic Runfessions for April

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I have not worn clothes other than running clothes since I started working from home on March 17.  It’s not because they are comfortable. It’s because no one is seeing me and it saves time getting out the door to go for a walk or run.

I do worry that my work clothes may no longer fit.

Do you wear running clothes even when you are working from home?

2. I runfess…

I have spent a lot of time searching for new places to walk or run.  Usually I ran near wherever I was working.  Now working from home makes me want to leave the neighborhood as quick as possible and discover a different environment.

Peebles Island State Park

Did you run in different locations or did you stay close to home?

3.I runfess…

I never ran with a mask on.

I know you think I should have.  I always wore a buff around my neck and could have pulled it up if I felt I was dangerously close to someone else.  But I never felt that way.

Did you run in a mask?

4. I runfess…

I signed up for the Peleton app since it was free for 90 days.  And there were so many really great outdoor running workouts that I could do.  I went as far as pre-loading them.  But unfortunately, they still need an Internet connection and I do not  have unlimited data on my phone so I’ve only used them a few times and the shorter ones.  They would be a lot more useful for me if I had a treadmill.

Peloton - Peloton App Expands to Include Outdoor Runs

Do you use the Peleton app outdoors?

5.I runfess…

I may be enjoying my walks more than my runs. I think it is because they are more scenic and I love taking pictures of nature. I am walking everyday at lunch but as I have mentioned, I am always dressed in running clothes and so I could be running at that time. It is so easy to lose that running mojo when you are not racing.

Is it just me? Are you still motivated to run when they are no races?

Runfessions for March

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I have finally graduated from PT and doctor appointments.(Perfect timing considering what is happening right now.)

So I have extra $$ for racing. LOL (if there were any happening…)

But I am slacking off on any of those exercises that I should be dong to strengthen my hips, calves, glutes, quads, etc.

Do you continue your PT prescribed exercises once you are healthy?

2. I runfess…

I broke up with my chiropractor. (and that was before she closed her practice…)

I started going for ART when I strained my calf and then I was going monthly for tune-ups but once my foot started hurting in November, I stopped. And now she is pregnant.

Do you regularly go to a chiropractor?

3.I runfess…

I have now registered for SEVEN half marathons for the year…. (if they were cancelled, I ran them virtually)

Now that my foot no longer hurts, I’m thinking about #8. Crazy, right?

hot, hilly and humid

Update:  My April Half has been postponed until August 29 so this one won’t have to happen.  Since I am running all my races (virtually), I am sticking with one half per month.  3 down…9 to go.  LOL

4. I runfess…

I almost registered for the Cherry Blossom 10 MiIer.

I have always wanted to run this race.  I didn’t enter the lottery but I found out that so many runners offer bib transfers. Flights were cheap. It was tempting but I only worked two days at the Bar Exam instead of three.  That meant I lost my extra $$$ plus Bermuda was expensive.

(Turns out it didn’t matter because the race was cancelled.)

Next year…Perhaps?

5.I runfess…

I did not register for the 2020 NYC Marathon because at the time I was still experiencing foot pain. I wasn’t sure if it would ever go away. I did not want to run 26.2 miles like that. It was hard enough without foot pain.

But when only 2% of those who entered the lottery got in, I felt guilty that I had a timed entry (from Helderberg to Hudson Half 2019) and I did not register.

The race was cancelled after Hurricane Sandy so technically 2021 is the 50th running of the race.

So maybe next year… (If that foot pain stays away and I can get back to running at a decent pace or I get in by the lottery.)

Runfessions for February

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I still ran ALL month even though my foot pain was no better…

but it was no worse.

2. I runfess…

I ran another Half Marathon without completing ALL my long runs.

4 mile race instead of 12 LSD

3.I runfess…

Even though I was dealing with constant foot pain, I still registered for THREE more Half Marathons..

  • May – Steel Rail
  • September – Saratoga Palio
  • October – Smuttynose
Image result for smuttynose half marathon

Girls WEEKEND!! YEAH!

That’s now SEVEN for the year….

4. I runfess…

When I heard that ZOOMA Bermuda Half Marathon would run out of medals for the slower runners, I wanted to finish faster than I had originally planned.

luckily they did NOT run out of medals because I did not have a good finish time

5.I runfess…

I almost registered for the 2020 NYC Marathon

Yeah, I said that I was ONE and DONE!

But it is the 50th anniversary of the race….

I DID NOT register (even though I qualified with a timed-entry) because the site went down and I was working at the time…PHEW!  Relieved.

The race was cancelled after Hurricane Sandy so technically 2021 is the 50th running of the race.

So maybe next year… (If I can conquer that foot pain and get back to running at a decent pace…)

Runfessions for January

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I diagnosed my own foot problem. Doesn’t Google know everything?

I was too impatient to wait for my doctor to come up with something.

Have you Googled your injury instead seeking a professional’s opinion?

2. I runfess…

I did go to a Doctor but I did not follow his advice. Again too impatient. I abstained from running for 3 weeks and I wasn’t getting better so I ran.

And my foot still hurt but it did not feel worse.

Have you ignored a doctor’s advice regarding resting an injury?

3.I runfess…

Once I started running, my foot felt slightly better (at least it did in my mind). So I continued running… cautiously with lots of rest days.

Has running ever made an injury feel less painful?

4. I runfess…

So my foot felt a little better while running that 6 miler so I ran a New Year’s Day race.  Not sure if it was because I ran faster or the course was hillier but my foot hurt more!!!

smiling kinda but because it was over.

Anyone else impatient when injured?

5.I runfess…

Once I re-started my weekend long runs, I decided to run the Fred LeBow Half Marathon in NYC … even though I skipped the 7, 9, 11 and 12 milers.  Yikes.

ignore that smile…HILLS + sore foot = 😦 BUT no DOMS + foot no worse = 🙂

Even run a half marathon under-trained or with only 1 double digit run?

Runfessions for December

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

Can they be called RUNfessions if I didn’t run??

Anyway….

1. I runfess…

When I was working in NYC, I did not RUN due to a sore foot, but I did WALK…

I mean it was NYC during the holidays… I wanted to see the decorations…. Did I interfere with the healing of my foot???

Should I have just stayed in my hotel?

2. I runfess…

I did not run one of my favorite (fun) races but I went anyway. I dressed up as if to race and even kept the race shirt.

And yes, I admit, I had serious FOMO.

Anyone else not race but go to cheer on their friends anyway?

3.I runfess…

I was hoping that the podiatrist would see a stress fracture on the xray.

At least then, you rest, it heals and you run again.

But seeing nothing and recommending rest does not make you feel satisfied.

Anyone else ever have one of those frustrating undiagnosed injuries?

4. I runfess…

Even though I was not running and didn’t know when I would run again, I still shopped for running-related items? Not sure why?

Anyone else buy running gear while they were injured?

5.I runfess…

My 2020 goal was 12 half marathons in 12 months. Well, that will not happen…but I’m having a hard time planning my running comeback.  (Yes, there will be one).

I may DNS the January Half in NYC but should I also downgrade the February one (in Bermuda) to a 10k or just slog it.

Anyone else impatient when coming back from an injury?

Runfessions for November ’19

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I bought finisher items before I actually ran the marathon.

Of course, I did worry afterward that I would jinx it and not finish.

Image result for new balance nyc marathon finisher gear"Image result for new balance nyc marathon finisher gear"

Well, at least I waited until after the race to wear them. Thank God I did finish!!

Anyone else buy finisher gear before they actually finish the race?

2. I runfess…

I agreed to share my room during Marathon weekend with someone before I even met them.

I was again worried since I am such a light sleeper and the NYC hotel rooms are tiny.

Yup, Lacey was my roommate and it all worked out fine (At least I think she liked me.)

Anyone else agree to share a hotel room with someone that they had never met before?

3.I runfess…

I wore a skirt for the first time for my marathon.

Yes, 26.2 miles in something I’ve never run in before. I only wore it because it had many pockets (for my fuel) and I even had to shorten it because it was too long.

It was given to me by Cari because it is a weird size and fit. Skirt Sports no longer sells it (probably a good reason for that…) High Five skirt, I think it was called.

I don’t usually chafe but what if I did? and what if it was uncomfortable?..a marathon takes a long time to run.

Thankfully, the skirt was ok.  It definitely was not my most comfortable or best looking skirt but the pockets served their purpose.

Anyone else wear a new item for the first time during a big race?

4. I runfess…

I was relieved that my hubby could not go watch me at the marathon.

It would be much too stressful to worry about the race and worry about him too. He does not know NYC.  I couldn’t imagine him waiting for hours in the crowd to see me pass by.

I am grateful that I did spot some familiar faces in the crowds.

Anyone else prefer to travel to race-cations without their significant other?

5.I runfess…

In addition to my first full marathon, I also ran a 10k, 15k and 5k during the month.

Why not cover all the distances?

And racing should be for fun not PRs.

And these races were fun (and not PRs lol)

having fun at the Stockade-athon 15K

after the 10k and before the 5k where I would get another medal

Anyone else race-obsessed? Do you race for fun or time?

Runfessions for October

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I wore brand new running shoes out of the box for my 20 miler.

It was during a 7 mile re-race run followed by a half marathon. And they were the same as shoes I had previously wore out — just a new pair. I was in pain but it was NOT because of the shoes LOL

happy to be nearing the finish line (and my cheering friends)

Anyone else race in new shoes?

2. I runfess…

I skipped one of my long runs in favor of a 10K race.

It was supposed to be a 14 miler but I did walk 8 miles that day in addition to the Grete’s Great Gallop 10k race in NYC.

a fun time in Central Park

Anyone else not worry about getting in ALL their long runs?

3.I runfess…

I signed up for a race the day after my 20 mile training run.

I planned to walk it. I was in a lot of pain during the second half of the run (and after) but the next morning all the pain was gone. I was good, though and walked MOST of it. Check out that 5k finish time LOL.

Anyone else recover from a long run or big race with a race?

4. I runfess…

I also signed up for a 15K race the week after my first full marathon.

I was at a recent expo and there was a discount. Again, I can take it slow if I am still sore, right?

during last year’s Stockade-athon

Anyone else race right after a full marathon ?

5.I runfess…

I also may run a 5k race (tomorrow the week before my full marathon and add on 5 miles before or after.)

It’s for a great cause and my running friends are busy this weekend. Why not race/run?

Oct. 26, 2019 9:30 am

Runfessions for September

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I don’t comment on most blogs.

I read many running blogs. But I either don’t have time to comment and they won’t let me comment using my iphone.

I feel guilty since I enjoy when runners comment on my posts.

Anyone else read blogs but don’t comment?

2. I runfess…

I post for myself.

My readership is pretty small. But I’m okay with it.

I often don’t even link up my posts.

If you read my post from last Friday about why I blog, you know that I plan to continue blogging even if no one reads my blog.

Anyone else not worry about who reads their blog?

3.I runfess…

My life if not perfect.

Some people have commented that I am so lucky, I get to travel, have so many friends, do so many interesting things, etc.

Um…. there is plenty of not so great things going on with my family, friends, work, etc.

I just prefer not to share those things.

For the most part, I blog about my running and on FB and IG, I like sharing the good stuff.

(I not NOT judging those who share all kinds of things – good and bad.  I do enjoy getting to know you better.)

Anyone else prefer to keep the bad stuff in their life private?

4. I runfess…

I’m planning my Marathon outfit.

It’s the one thing I can control. My training runs, the weather, my ache and pains… NOPE).

So I am definitely wearing a Skirt Sports skirt (with pockets), NYCM compression calf sleeves, race belt, baseball cap.

But the shirt. I want it to represent where I’m from. So it will probably be from a local race (H2H, MHM or Freohofers.)

Anyone else obsess over their race outfit ?

5.I runfess…

I miss racing.

When I wasn’t training for a full marathon, I would race almost every weekend.  Around here, in the fall, there are so many races to choose from.

I’m trying to be good about getting my long runs in.  But it’s so hard not to click that “register” button.

Just a few of the races I’m skipping:

Anyone else like to race all the time?

Runfessions for August

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I was raced obsessed again this month. Three races but TWO races in ONE week!

  • August 14, a 5k in Brooklyn
  • August 17, a local 5k

(I came to my senses and DNSed a one mile race on Aug 19. Good thing, I was in NYC working on Aug 21 so I couldn’t run another 5k.)

Anyone else ever run more than one race in a week?

2. I runfess…

I am still confused on the shoe/foot issue.

One day the pain is gone. One day for no reason, it is back.

I’ve gone back to wearing my neutral Nikes for short distances. Sometimes they are fine. Sometimes not.

wore them for my 5k here

Then I added my insoles to my new Mizunos for long runs and they felt better…sorta.

10 mile run

Anyone wear different shoes for different distances?

3.I runfess…

Last month I bought a new Garmin, a 230 but I have yet to try it. Still doing my weekly runs naked and my races with my Garmin 205.

Anyone else hesitate to make technology changes or when you buy a new watch, do you use it right away?

4.I runfess…

Every year, my tennis friends and I go to NYC to see a Broadway show.

I do the organizing so I picked this show:

Image result for hadestown

won a Tony for best musical

and got group tix for October 5.

Yup, this 10k race is why I chose Oct. 5.

Do plan races when you visit another city? Anyone else running Grete’s Great Gallop?

5.I runfess…

I used to play tennis almost everyday and on numerous teams. Then running came into the picture and tennis no longer seemed to fit.

2010 was the last year that I seriously competed o a tennis team

I thought I didn’t miss it but I watched tennis at the Aurora Games and last weekend, I hung out with my tennis friends. And now the US Open is on TV.

Yup, I do miss it.

Has running replaced any other activity in your life?  Do you think that you will ever stop running?

Friday Five Runfessions for July

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I almost went to a race without registering first. I always run the Silks and Satins 5K so I guess I thought I did register. I am not a last minute person so I would have registered a while ago.

So a few days before the race, I went to the website to see which of my friends were running it and I did NOT see my name.

Oops. Senior brain!

I registered that day.  Phew.

Anyone else ever show up to a race without registering first?

2. I runfess…

I did not travel at all in July.

So it was a challenge to keep running interesting.  I get bored easily and don’t like to run in the same places.

So I don’t. See below:

Rail Trail … Washington Park … UAlbany

Zim Smith Trail … Corning Bike Path … Nisky Bike Path

Anyone else try to vary where you run or do you run in the same places?

3.I runfess…

I ordered a new pair of Mizunos.  Why??

My right foot all of sudden started having that annoying bunion pain that I had years ago.  It’s fine until after 5-6 miles which is what I’ll be doing every weekend until Nov 3!!

I’m pretty sure it is not from running but job-related – ugh those dress shoes and standing for hours in them. (They are comfortable until the end of the day… and then they’re not.)

bazu-7525023

happy in my Nikes

The benefit of a blog is that I could look up when my foot stopped hurting. It seems to be the fall of 2015 when I bought my Nike Vomero running shoes.  I recently stopped wearing them because I wanted to run in a stability shoe instead after a calf injury.

The Mizunos were super comfortable for THREE half marathons and now this pain…

Hmmm? Do I go back? To my Nikes?

Can I be happy again in my Mizunos?

So recently I ran the first 3 miles of my long run in my Nikes and the last 5 miles in my new Mizunos (but I forgot to put in the expensive insoles).

The Nikes felt more comfortable.

Dear Mizunos,

I’m not giving up on you yet.

Anyone else have the running shoe dilemma?

4. I runfess…

31 Days of Skirt was pretty exhausting. I do take a lot of pictures and post to Instagram often but not everyday and not following certain clues.

Still it was fun to participate in this annual challenge but glad it’s ALMOST over LOL.

Did you participate in 31 days of skirt or any other similar challenge?

5.I runfess…

I was pretty proud that I had a training schedule for my first marathon. I actually planned to follow it.

But all I do is cross things out and re-write things.

That’s why, I rarely use a plan.

Anyone else have problem following a training plan?
