Friday Five: Off From Work Actvities

DC_linkup

Every Friday, three DC area bloggers Mary at Mar On the Run, Cynthia at You Signed Up For What?! and Courtney from Eat Pray Run, DC to host the Friday Five linkup.  Anyone can join with their own Friday Five post (yes, it must be a Friday Five!!)  They encourage you to visit other blogs on the linkup, comment, share and engage!

This week, the theme is Free Friday. So since this is my only stay at home vacation of the year, I’ve chosen to post about My Top 5 Off Work Activities.

1. RUNNING

IMG_4579

Of course, what else?  I can run in the morning, in the afternoon or in the evening.  I can run when the sun comes out or it has stopped raining.  I can run near home or drive to a bike path or to a park.  I can even run with a non-working friend. It is so delightful!!

2. EXERCISING

I don’t enjoy it but I know it good for me to do something other than running.  However when I work, I don’t have (make) time for it.

IMG_3982

3. COOKING

I do enjoy it and before I started playing tennis and running, I used to cook a lot.

IMG_4351

2 of my favorites things to make

This week, I’ve made eggplant parm, tuna noodle casserole, meatloaf, vegetable soup…my hubby’s favorite dishes since he has to work.

4. KNITTING

IMG_4562

and I did finally finish this scarf

I started knitting when I couldn’t run or go to work. I find it relaxing and I like to make things for others.  I used to quilt but knitting is portable and I can bring it anywhere.

5. READING

I’ve always enjoyed reading.  But who has the time?  I read before I fall asleep at night but when I am not working, I can read anytime.

Happy Running! What do you do when you are off from work?

Currently

Being off from work for more than a weekend is very strange for me. I am not used to having so much free time and yet, not getting things done.

Reading…. I want to see Unbroken tomorrow in the theaters so I am trying to finish the book. (I doubt I will finish, though.)

Watching… I heard this show was good and I am binge watching all the episodes to catch up. So far, I am enjoiying it and I think I am hooked.

Drinking I have fallen in love with herbal teas.

Eating… out a lot.

Anticipating the Hangover Half Marathon on New Year’s Day…but only as a training run but still nervous.

Wishing for  Seasonally warm temps and DRY weather… no snow, ice or rain so I can run outdoors.

Yay! Clear path.

Seeing next week… Going to MoMA in NYC to see…

and seeing the decorations that I missed on my last visit.

Loving... that I do not have to go to work and can RUN any time I want and do whatever whenever. I may even hit the gym.

Feeling… Anxious. I am always nervous about running a half marathon especially a destination race where I don’t know anyone.

West Palm beach, here I come!

Would You Rather…? Holiday Edition

…Run a Christmas themed event in the heat or the snow?

Probably the snow because hey, it is a Christmas-themed event.  But I do not enjoy the cold, as a rule.

20131214-200228.jpg

this was during a snowstorm

…Sing / listen to Christmas songs during your run, or wear a Christmas outfit during your run?

A little of both.  I have a few Christmas songs on my iPhone and I have dressed up to run.

waiting inside before the race

… A new running watch, or an entry fee to a running event?

A new running watch.  My Garmin 205 is getting old.

… Go for a run before your Christmas meal or after?

Definitely before.  It would give me the excuse to eat a lot of goodies.

…Listen to an Audiobook / Podcast on running, or read a book about running?

I have never listened to an audiobook/podcast on running but I have read many a book on running. I would like to read this one:

… A year access to an online running coach or 5 one-on-one visits to a running coach?

One-on-one. I need the person to keep me accountable.  If it were online, I know I wouldn’t get as much out of it.

… Give up your Christmas to help those in need (like a soup kitchen), or spend your Christmas with ALL your family?

I don’t have big family so I think I would rather give up my Christmas to help those in need. I do give gifts to my mentee’s kids each Christmas.

He loves those super heroes

I just love him!

… Watch Love Actually or The Holiday?

Love Actually  – it is one of my favorite  movies.

… Ham or Chicken / Turkey for Christmas meal?

I don’t really like ham, so I would prefer chicken or turkey. But I actually really like Lasagna on Christmas Day. I have spent many a Christmas at my Italian in-laws.

Happy Running! So which would you rather? Share some answers in the comments or share on your own blog and link back!

2014: My Year in Racing

I’m linking up with Montana from Pretty Lil Mudder and a number of other Girls Gone Sporty members to give out some awards to the races I ran.  Since I ran so many, I had no problem finding a race for each category even though I only ran 2 half marathons and no marathons.

Most Scenic Course –  This was a little difficult to choose…along the river, along the ocean, along a lake, in a park??? But I will pick the Mayor’s Wellness 10 Miler (in Palm Springs) because of the awesome mountain views.

Most Challenging Course – For me, challenging is hills and distance but I think I’ll choose hills.  There were 2 that I ran along Lake George that were hilly but the Adirondack Distance was longer (10 miles) so more challenging.

Best Course Support (aid stations, volunteers, people cheering you on, etc) –

I would probably have give this one to the Stockade-athon.  There were many water stops & volunteers. And the people of Schenectady cheered the runners throughout the course. The photo below was taken by a friend along the course.

Best Expo  – It would have to be the Love Run (in Philly) since it is the only one I went to.  I went with friends and we had a lot of fun – lots of booths, free shirts, hair braiding, massages, etc.

Best Swag – Another tough one. Sometimes I like the shirt, sometimes the medal, sometimes you get other good stuff.  But I would have to pick the Apple Run 5K. You got a bag, shirt and a glass.  Plus the AG awards were plaques.

Most Unique Medal – I guess the most unique medal was the one made out of wood from the Camp Chingachgook 10k. All of my other medals are metal.

Best Post-Race Food/Beverages – I have run a few races that have had a good selection of post race food.  It is important if you spend a lot money on a race and if it is a destination race.  My vote this year goes to the Camp Chingachgook 10k.  They had an awesome barbecue of hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, etc.

The Perfect 10 Miler had good post-race food as well (just too healthy for me.)

Best Race Shirt– This was easy.  It was the lilac hoodie from the Perfect 10 miler (in NJ.) It is very comfortable.  I have worn it several times already.

Favorite Overall Race – With running 33 races this year, it is certainly hard to pick one.  But if I have to, I’d say it was the Troy Turkey Trot 10k.  The weather cooperated, there was a lot of excitement surrounding the race and I saw a lot of racers that I knew there. It was just fun.  The only thing that would have made it better would have been an Age Group award.  At least, I had a PR.

Race You Are Most Proud of Yourself for Completing  – Half Marathons are tough for me.  I ran one this year in the pouring rain but my award goes to the Saratoga Half Marathon.  It was very very humid and I felt sick the whole race. I wanted to quit several times but toughed it out.

Happy Running! What awards would you give to the races you ran in 2014?

Friday Five – Holiday traditions

This week, the theme is Holiday Traditions:

Here are five of my favorite traditions:

1. Running through the Lights in the Park

It is a mile from where I work so I try to run here after work as many times as I can (including a 5k race).

2. Decorating with Snowmen

I am Jewish and my hubby is Catholic. Snowmen are non-denominational so it works for us.  I love them and they are so cute!

20131202-181918.jpg

3. Lighting the Menorah

I was raised very religious but I am no longer.  I do enjoy eating latkes and lighting the Menorah to celebrate Chanukah..

I accidentally deleted the photo that I took last night.

4. Bringing Gifts to my mentee’s sons

I don’t have any grandkids so I love to spend Christmas morning at Amanda’s (the girl I used to mentor.)

???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????

5. Going to the Movies on Christmas Day

After seeing my mentee and then having dinner with my mother-in-law & stepsons, we always go to the movies to see a movie that opens on Christmas Day. This year, I hope to see….

Unfortunately, I can only mention 5 but runner’s up are: Christmas parties, baking cookies, visiting NYC.

Happy Running! What are your holiday traditions?
