Runfessions March

It’s that time again.  Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

I runfess…

I STILL can’t seem to motivate myself to run in the morning before work.  It’s not that I sleep in but I am lazy.  I sit around watching the Today show, eating breakfast and reading email/blogs. Then all of a sudden, it’s time to go to work.

img_9325

When I am busy after work and I need to run, I have to run at lunch.  It’s ok now because it is still cool out.  That will change when it gets warm and I will be too sweaty to go back to work.

How do you early morning runners do it?

I runfess…

Last month, I couldn’t go to yoga or the gym because I had tennis elbow.  Good excuse, right?

Now, my elbow feel fine…but I still haven’t gone… no time, no ambition, too lazy.

I need an intervention!!

I runfess…

I din’t taper for my last half marathon.

I usually run 8 miles the weekend before but I ran 11 miles on Sunday.

11 miles

11 miles

Then I ran 4 miles on Monday, 5 miles on Wednesday, 2 miles on Thursday….

OOPS!

I ran my second fastest half so I guess it was okay and if it weren’t so f##in hilly, I might have PRed.

I runfess…

I also did not recover after my last half marathon.

half recover

My bad!

I ran 3 miles the next day and also on Wed & Thurs.  Plus I have 10k on Saturday and a 5k on Sunday.

img_9351

my legs were TIRED!!

I runfess…

I still have my Starbucks addiction.  I stop on the way to the park. And I walk to the park everyday at lunch.  (Darn, I wish they would close that store!!!)

img_9319

I even walked there in the rain

However, I have discovered their Chocolate Banana Smoothie.  Tell me it’s healthier than a frappuccino!

img_9254

I runfess…

I don’t like hills. I walk rather than run up them.  And I don’t train on hills.

So why do I sign up for hilly races?

mc16

May 8 – HILLY!!!!!

May 29 – Hilly

ccc16

I haven’t signed up yet but I probably will…

Happy Running! Anything to runfess this month?

TOLT: Lake George Half Marathon Recap

Since it is Thursday,  I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

thinking out loud

Here’s what I’m thinking about today…

My last half marathon!

Here’s how it went down:

April 24, 2016 —   9 am start

Half Marathon Training

Since I ran a half marathon 6 weeks ago, I only needed to run 9, 10, 11, 12, 8 miles and I actually ran 9, 10.5, 11, 12 and 11 so I should have been ready. As you can see below, only one long run was without a long break in the middle.

As I have mentioned many times before, I don’t ever follow a strict training schedule.  I just make sure than I do my long runs on the weekends and run a few times during the week (usually for 3 miles.)

For my last half marathon, I should have trained on hills.  But I didn’t so I suffered the consequences. This time, I did do hill repeats (but only once.)

Plus, I have been racing …a lot.  That counts as speed drills, right?

And of course, I planned my race outfit keeping my fingers crossed that it would be warm enough to wear it.

img_9210

at the last minute, I reversed the top & bottom colors.

I mean we had snow at the beginning of the month so you never know.

Pre-Race Preparations

My 2nd half marathon in 2011 was the Lake George Half Marathon.  It was poorly run by another company that has since gone out of business. This new race is run by 3C Race Productions and has gotten good reviews.  (I ran their Saratoga Half in 2014.)

Plus, the weather in 2011 was horrible – freezing rain and sleet for the whole 13.1 hilly miles.

lg3

Yes, the race is hilly and most likely the same course as the one run by the other company (except that the finish line in 2011 was on Beach Rd not up a hill to the Fort.)

The Half Marathon course starts on Beach Road and heads East on Beach Road past Fort William Henry, around the loop, and back on Beach Road. The course then turns right on Lake Shore Drive (Route 9) and continues all the way to the turnaround point at the Lake George Club in Bolton Landing. The course returns back on Lake Shore Drive to turn left on Beach Road up onto the sidewalk to take the path up to the Finish Line at the Fort William Henry Resort.

I run most of my half marathons alone. Many are destination races too.

But this time, my running friend Barbara signed up for the race too so we decided to drive up together. It was nice to have her company. (We could worry before together and whine after LOL)

Below is a map of the scenic course:

LakeGeorgeHMCourse

Most of the race has views of the lake

More importantly this was the elevation:

uphill, downhill, rolling hills…repeat….NO REST FROM THE HILLS!!

Race Day

I got up early (like 5:30 am) and had my usual race breakfast of cream of wheat and tea. It was nice to sleep in my own bed before a big race (although I really didn’t sleep well…as usual.)

I met Barbara at the Park n Ride at 6:30 am so we could drive together up to Lake George. The ride took about an hour.

img_9260

view from the hotel looking toward the start

I had a hard time deciding what to wear. It was COLD (in the 30s) and breezy. At least it would be sunny and hopefully warm up later on.

In the end, I shed my long-sleeved shirt and wore a tank, my DIY arm sleeves, a windbreaker and gloves.

They had emailed us not to park in the Fort William Henry Resort parking lot and not to use the hotel facilities.  So we drove to the lot below on Beach Rd. No one was parked there so we decided to risk it and park at the hotel. (It worked out fine.)

We got our bibs and a short-sleeved sleeved tech shirt and then went back to the car to stay warm.

img_9261

Finally we went into the hotel and used the restrooms (Rebels we are… not really… lots of racers were in the hotel lobby too.)

There were real bathrooms there which is always nice. And we could wait indoors where it was warm until the race started…

Eventually we had to make our way down the hill to the street in search of the start line.

img_9262

The race was on the small side (maybe 200 runners) and not particularly well organized.  We lined up in the road and the race director yelled go (5 minutes after the race was supposed to start.)

A lot of the race is a blur but here’s how I remember it:

Miles 1-4:

9:27, 9:54, 10:15, 10:13

I lined up pretty close to front.  I wasn’t sure if the race was chip timed or gun timed. Barbara started further back.

We began along the lakefront on Beach Road. From there, we followed a quick loop eastward down into Lake George Beach State Park, and then headed westward again along Beach Road, past the start area, and then turned right to head north onto Canada Street. Once on Canada Street, we followed it for a stretch before turning onto Lake Shore Drive.

13087342_10206689009164962_2465817787027020010_n

around mile 1.5

The only flatish part of the race had ended.  I was happy that I started out slow.

Now the uphill battle began.

We would continue on Route 9N or Lake Shore Drive, all the way up to the turnaround point just past the half-way point.

My hubby and I own a boat and we keep it in Bolton Landing, about 2 miles north of the turn around point.  I have been driving this road for the past 10 years most weekends from May – October.

The hills were no surprise.

I realized quickly that I didn’t need my jacket.  Although it was breezy for the first mile, once we  headed north, we no longer felt the wind.  I tied my jacket around my waist (which annoyed me because it kept moving around). I kept on my DIY arm sleeves until the last few miles.

I made sure that I stopped and walked at every water stop. The first one was around mile 2.  I thought that I would see one in another 2 miles but that wasn’t the case.

The worst part of the race (actually it was almost the whole race) was that you ran with traffic.  That meant you had to run on the very narrow shoulder of the road.  Often, the road was uneven and with holes.  Plus, you had to make sure that cars moved over enough (especially after the last half I ran when someone got hit by a truck). It was very nerve-wracking to say the least.

Barbara who started behind me quickly got ahead of me and stayed that way for the rest of the race.  For awhile, I could see her, but every time I stopped to walk, she got farther ahead. (Her hill training apparently worked!)

Miles 5-8:

9:45, 10:39, 10:41, 11:02

It was unending hill after hill but not as steep as the map shows which means that the steep downhills weren’t there either.  I thought that I may walk up EVERY hill like the last race but the during the first half of the race, I ran/walked up them.  For the most part I was happy with how I was tackling them.

Finally at mile 5.75, there was the second water stop.  I could finally eat a GU.

I spent most of the first half of the race (except for when I was looking down at the uneven pavement and pot holes) admiring the lake and reminiscing about the sites along the lake (such as, the Inn at Erlowest where my hubby & I went for an anniversary dinner, a motel where stayed before we had a boat you could sleep on, a deli where I’ve stopped to buy sandwiches, etc.)

At the halfway point, I was at 1:05 or so…not bad with all those hills. (Unfortunately there would be no PR, I could not hold that pace.)

Then things started going downhill (and I’m not talking about the course.) I started developing a blister on the bottom of the left foot and one on the right side of my right foot. (Even with all those moleskin I put on my feet… grrr).

And my lower back was aching. (I think I was leaning forward running up those hills.)

Finally at mile 7.5 we turned around, had water and started heading back.  Mile 8 was the first mile sign that I saw (I don’t know how I missed the others or were they not there?).

IMG_3550

this is not from the race but from when I’ve run on this same road

Miles 9-13:

11:01, 11:26, 11:13, 10:38

The longest and steepest hill came between miles 8 and 9.  And my body was already done with hills. As you can see from my pace, I was walking more and more.  I took another GU around mile 10 even without a water stop. Finally there was some downhill but too little, too late.

Mile 14:

10:14 (definitely not a sprint to the finish)

13062550_10206689457696175_2378682178298357003_n

Barbara crossing the finish line

Eventually, I took a right and headed up (yes, up) a dirt path, then another sharp right that led to the finish line.  I had zero energy left at this point and was glad to be done.

Garmin time: 2:16:30
Gun Time: 2:16:58
Chip Time: 2:16:56

Barbara was there waiting, as well as, a boating friend of mine.

img_9265

with my friend Kathy who lives nearby

As soon as you were done, you gave the race director your bib number and he printed out your results and gave you your award if you won one.

img_9272

Yup, I won second in my age group and got a beer glass.

img_9263

I quickly went back to my car so I could change out of my sweaty clothes.

img_9266

Then the three of us went out to lunch in town. It was too cold to sit outside but we had a nice view from our table.

img_9268

Additional race reflections:

The Good:

  • No rain.
  • Perfect running weather – cool, no humidity, little wind.
  • Close enough to be able to sleep in my own bed the night before.
  • Organized packet pick-up
  • Real bathroom
  • Warm place to wait before the race
  • I shared my race experience with a friend
  • Scenic course with lake views
  • No major injuries. (just the usual sore feet)
  • Immediate results and you didn’t have to wait for an awards ceremony
  • I finished and beat my previous course time.

The Bad:

  • Running with traffic
  • Uneven narrow shoulder to run on
  • Hilly course
  • Post-race refreshments left much to be desired (I didn’t even have anything)
  • No crowd support (saw 2 people cheering on the course)
  • No official race photos (there was someone who posted on FB but he stopped before I crossed the finish line.)
  • The 5k runners got the same medal and 5K AG winners got the same beer glass.  (And Half Marathoners ran 10 more miles!!)

13055904_10153531196841074_620466050267874042_o

My friend Tom who ran the 5k

The Ugly:

  • the Hills
  • the Road
  • the Traffic

So there are more positives than negatives!!! Overall, it was an OK race. Running with a friend is great.

Would I recommend this race?

Not really.  There are better ones out there. But if you do run it, you better train on hills.

img_9269

Final Stats:

lghm16

I’m still 62!!

And I definitely walked more and slowed down (as usual) during the 2nd half of the race.

I wasn’t thrilled with my results.  But I wasn’t unhappy.  After all, I didn’t train for hills. It was far from my slowest time.  In fact, it was my second fastest half marathon and faster than the first time I ran it.

Every time, my lower back started to ache, I fixed my form and stopped hunching over my shoulders.  And my awful feet only received two minor blisters.

The day after, I felt great and was even able to go for my group run (though I didn’t do the speed drills and ran slowly.)

However, if I want to run another hilly course, I’ve got some work to do… (Wait a minute, I said that last time.)

Next Up:

I have two races this weekend. Yes, TWO!!

sro16

I signed up for the 10k on Saturday.  It’s a nice small local race along the Hudson River and there’s a free pasta dinner the night before.

1st

last year with 2 friends

Then on Sunday, I signed up for a 5k.  Normally these two races are not scheduled on the same weekend.

This one is a local race in a quiet neighborhood that raises money for ALS. Maybe there’ll even be cherry blossoms this year.

2nd

last year also

Last year, I won age group awards in both races.  But after just running a half marathon and racing two days in a row, I have no such lofty aspirations.

I’m looking forward nice spring weather and enjoying my runs.  I may add more miles on Sunday (if I feel good) after the 5k or may be I’ll just enjoy not training for my next half marathon.

Happy Running!  How do you handle a hilly race?  Do you have any races coming up?  What are you thinking about today?

TOTR: Race Swag

with Erika @ MCM Mama Runs,
Marcia @ Marcia’s Healthy Slice
and Patty @ My no-guilt life

This week’s topic is Dream race swag. What’s the best thing you ever got? What would you love?

I personally like things that are useful.

Here are some of my favorites:

I still use this lunch bag that I won as an Age Group award

AJH got 2nd place...we won a lunch bag which matches the race shirt
I love socks.

Glasses are cool. It came with a green tooth brush.

Wind breakers are practical.  I have them in green, blue, yellow and orange. (Unfortunately they stopped giving them out.)

Coffee mugs are great.

20140331-090811.jpg

And gloves are handy.

I recently got a sweatshirt that I really like.

img_8792

I’ve also gotten rain ponchos, ice packs, water bottles, food samples, baseball caps, sunglasses, towels, etc.

In addition to useful items, food is another swag item that I appreciate:

I have gotten gift cards for free ice cream and free donuts.  I’ve won restaurant gift cards.

IMG_3925

I’ve run 180 something races.  That’s a lot of swag. (Mostly junk but some good stuff.)

So what would be the perfect swag?

A jacket or sweatshirt, Starbucks or ice cream gift card, coupon for a free massage or gym membership, samples of energy bars or gel. (I could list other things but they would be cost prohibitive 🙂 )

Happy Running! What would be your perfect swag?

Monday Running Update

mon r u
Last Week:

  • Monday  So we went from winter to summer here, it appears. It was 75 degrees for my lunch walk to the park. The tulips aren’t looking to great (due to that recent snowstorm?) but still a lovely walk and a delicious Starbucks chocolate banana smoothie.

Sunday night, I woke up with an ache in my right Achilles.  It kept me up most of the night. I was panic-stricken imagining DNSing my half and all my summer races. But it was fine all day so I decided to go to my group run.  We were scheduled for a 10 min warm-up and cool down and then 8 400m intervals at 5k pace with 2 min. jogging in between.  I asked my coach what I should do after an 11 mile run the day before and a half marathon coming up.  I was considering not doing the speed repeats.  He recommended doing them but not at 5k pace but at 15k pace. So that’s what I did.  It was 79 degrees and my legs were tired but the laps got easier as I ran them.  My 400 m times were not speedy like last week but in the 2:10-2:15 range. The best part was that my Achilles felt fine…no pain at all (phew!)

  • Tuesday – The day started out cool and cloudy but got better and I again went for my daily afternoon walk. More good news – my elbow pain has mysteriously disappeared and I played tennis without worry. Afterwards, as usual, we went out to dinner.
  • Wednesday – Another beautiful spring day and a walk to the park.

After work and before the STEM ladies arrived, I ran one loop around campus.  Then I was paired up with Michelle again.  She was even speedy that last week. (But the French lady can no longer come on Wed. 😦 ) It was a fun workout. Love these ladies!

  • Thursday – It was too busy at work for me to get out and walk but I did squeeze out a run. The closest place to go was the track. Not exciting but got it done.

After work, I went out to dinner with two coworkers. I actually walked to and from the restaurant.  The reason why is below:

I also shared an appetizer (chicken meatballs) and the dessert was shared as well. Everything was delish.

Then I stopped off to go grocery shopping and to buy ingredients to make charoset for the seder the next night.

  • Friday – The day started out rainy but improved and was quite warm. I had to do some errands during lunch (forgot to buy the horseradish & gelfite for seder) and only got in a short walk to Starbucks.

non-fat milk, sugar free syrup, no whip so don’t judge

In the evening, one of my mah jongg friends hosted our annual Passover seder.  Always a good time (and there were as many non-Jews as Jews there.)

MJ Seder 2010

  • Saturday – I tried to make myself rest.  I didn’t run but got in a lot steps doing errands and housework. Then I went out to dinner with the hubby to carb load for the next day.
  • Sunday – I completed my 19th half marathon. I ran it with my friend Barbara on a perfect running weather day but those hills…I barely survived.

TOLT: Injuries, Half Marathons, etc.

Since it is Thursday,  I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

thinking out loud

Here’s what I’m thinking about today…

Did I dream it?

Last Sunday, I did my last long run.  I used to only run 8 miles the weekend before my half but the last few trainings, I’ve done 10 miles.  So that’s what I planned.  Accidentally I ran 11 but at 4:1 intervals and I felt great afterward.

Arrow Hitting The Heel Of A Foot, Achilles Heel, Symobolizing Weakness And Vulnerability Clipart Illustration Image by Maria Bell

Then in the middle of the night, I woke up with an ache in my right Achilles.  Of course I freaked. The first thing that came to mind was an injury I had in 2011 and the 4 weeks of PT and NO RUNNING.  That would mean a DNS for this half marathon on Sunday and DNSing 11 shorter races in the next few months.

So I iced it, took ibuprofen and put on a compression sock.

The next morning, it felt fine but I was still worried so I wore compression socks to work.  I even considered skipping my evening running practice.

Well, I went for a walk and it felt fine. No pain!

I decided to go to my running group and play it by ear. If it hurt, I would quit.

On the schedule were 8 400m intervals at 5k pace.  They are hard if you are healthy.  My coach recommended not going all out and running at a 15K pace.  That’s what I did. No sign of soreness or pain. Not even a twinge. It feels perfectly normal.

Since then, I have played tennis and I ran 5 miles last night.

Did I dream this injury??

Tennis Elbow

Another strange injury. It’s hurt for about a month.  I stopped playing tennis for 3 weeks and then played once. My elbow wasn’t improving.  It wasn’t worse but it hurt all the time. So I tried to just ignore it.  I even pulled weeds over the weekend.

Then Tuesday, I realized that the pain had completely disappeared. No soreness at all.

I played tennis that evening – no pain.

WTH!?

Next Half Marathon

Half #19 is almost here. The only thing I am worried about is the weather.

apor 23

apr24

It will be chilly in the morning, I bet – 30’s but then warm up.

img_9210

I will definitely wear a skirt and compression socks but I may be switching from the tank. I definitely will have a throw away shirt and arm sleeves.

I know the route and it is very HILLY.  Too late now to train on hills!

I ran this course in 2011 and finished in 2:22:39.  Last month I ran a hilly half marathon & finished in 2:22:40. So my guess is that I will finish between 2:15 and 2:30.

NO GOALS!! Just want to enjoy the race and not get injured!!!

Speed Work instead of Half Marathon Training

I have decided not to train for my next half marathon. (Do as I say not as I do…)

My weekends are too filled up with races.

  • 4-30-16 – Spring Run Off 10K
  • 5-01-16 – Cherry Blossom 5k
  • 5-07-16 – Mastodon Challenge 15k
  • 5-08-16 – Mother’s Day 5K (for GOTR)
  • 5-12-16 – Albany Law Day 5k Against Domestic Violence
  • 5-14-16 – Summer 5k Addiction Awareness Run
  • 5-18-16 to 5-25-16 – TENNIS VACATION IN FLORIDA
  • 5-29-16 – Vermont City Marathon Relay
  • 6-04-16 – Freihofer’s Run for Women 5k
  • 6-12-16  – Run for Help 5k (for STEM)

I am going on vacation. Weekend boating season is starting.

No time for long runs.

Hopefully my legs will not forget in 5 weeks how to complete 13.1 miles.

11203122_10204050010521064_4214761515489463940_n

can’t wait for fun in the sun

So I guess I will focus on speed.  That doesn’t mean that I will get faster (but that would be nice.) But I’m not hating our intervals on Mondays as much as I thought.  (I only wish I had fresh legs for one Monday.)

I’ve never run a half (healthy) without all my long runs.  So we’ll see if I stick to this new plan?

Happy Running! Have you ever had mysterious injuries? Do you always do your long runs before a big race? What’s on your mind today?

TOTR: Goals Update

with Erika @ MCM Mama Runs,
Marcia @ Marcia’s Healthy Slice
and Patty @ My no-guilt life

This week’s topic is “How are your 2016 goals coming along?

Well, in case you don’t remember, 2016 is my year of NO GOALS!!

Instead of GOALS, I wrote about Hopes and Dreams:

I hope to…

  • To improve my running

For me, it’s to get stronger and be a more confident runner.  To have more quality training runs.  To maintain my current speed and if I am very lucky PR at some distance. To run lots of races (both long ones and short ones.)

It’s still early in the year and we are our own worst critic so it’s hard to say whether or not, my running has improved.

I’ve run 10 races – three of which were half marathons.

img_8367

I’ve won three age group awards and 2 of my 5ks under 28 minutes.  There were no PRs but no real disappointing races.

img_8937

  • To run with others

With my schedule, it is easier to run solo.  But running with others is more fun.  I often shy away from running groups (like Fleet Feet, ARE, etc) because I feel that I am too slow.  I hope to take advantage of more group running opportunities.

I have made good progress here. I have run several long runs with Judy.  I have also run with Barbara and Denise.

I recently joined the Freihofer Training Challenge (advanced group) for the 2nd time.

img_8154

  • To volunteer and give back

I had great experiences with this in 2015 and I hope to continue with STEM, GOTR and any others opportunities that present itself.  My specials needs buddy is awesome. I hope to connect with him more.  And to make time to see my mentee Amanda & her kids more often.

I am again volunteering with the STEM training group.  I am also a GOTR buddy.

I haven’t spent as much time with Amanda as I would have liked (due to her work schedule.)

img_9189

spent last Saturday with them 🙂

I dedicate all my runs to JA but only post once a week and have a few tee shirts to mail to him.

ja bday

he just turned 12!!

  • To eat healthier

I am addicted to carbs and sweets.  I can justify the carbs for running but I hope to substitute more fruits and veggies into my diet. This also includes drinking more water.

There’s a lot of room for improvement here.

img_9142

too many of these!

  • To get physically on track

I may not weigh myself but I know for a fact that the excess pounds have moved to an ugly place (my waist & butt).  My excuses have been that it is an age thing (Sorry, the meni pot is a fact.) But I think it is important for me to exercise (not just run and play tennis).  Sit less, walk more? Gym time? Planks? Yoga? Whatever it takes to look better.

Hmmm…

Well, I have been going for a walk everyday. But that’s it – no gym, no yoga, no exercises…

  • To spend quality time with family and friends

Running is important but not more important than those I care about.  Skipping a run to be with them…it should happen.

I do spend time with my friends.  I walk in the mall with my BFF every other week.  I also go out with my tennis friends and work friends once a month.

img_8565

My hubby has started playing tennis several times a week but we try to fit in dinner out once week.  Soon we will be spending a lot of time together on our boat.

img_8163

There are a few things that I HOPE to work on the next few months.

Happy Running! Did you make goals?  Is so, how are they coming along?

Friday Five: Favorite 5Ks

Every Friday, three DC area bloggers Mar at Mar On the Run, Cynthia at You Signed Up For What?! and Courtney from Eat Pray Run, DC to host the Friday Five linkup.  Anyone can join with their own Friday Five post (yes, it must be a Friday Five!!)  They encourage you to visit other blogs on the linkup, comment, share and engage!

My Friday Five topic is My Five Favorite 5Ks.

Lately, I’ve been thinking speed (even though I am always in the middle of training for a half marathon). So here are the 5Ks that I love and try to run each year. (Believe me, it is tough for me to pick just 5).

1. Bacon Hill Bonanza

Small race in the country to support a local church held in April.  Scenic course, great post race refreshments and pies as age group prizes. What more could you ask for?

3. Dash to the Finish

An even bigger race held in a bigger city – New York City.  It takes place the day before the NYC Marathon and you run from the UN, through Manhattan and end by crossing the marathon finish line.  The day before, you get to go to the marathon expo, too.

4. Last Run

This race in held in Albany again like the Freihofer’s but in the middle of December.  The race starts off with fireworks and then you run through the lights in the park.  And everyone is in such a very festive mood.

Unfortunately, this one often conflicts with another race but I love this community run.  There is so much crowd support and great post-race eats.

best cone ever!

This 5k is held along the Hudson River.  It’s a place where I run often and there’s a free pasta dinner the night before (yes, food is a recurring theme.)

Saratoga is the place to be in the summer – for the horse races! This race starts and finishes near the flat track and you run around the neighborhoods of Saratoga.

I could go on and on about 5ks that I love but I’ll stop here.

TOLT: STEM, Racing, Injuries, Work, etc.

Since it is Thursday,  I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

thinking out loud

Here’s what I’m thinking about today…

Yesterday was my second week volunteering with a Couch to 5k program for women who are survivors of domestic violence.

This relates to yesterday’s post about being judgmental.  For the past two sessions, the women have been newbie runners and not very competitive.  They were so excited to have finished a 5k race.  So I used to run before or after the group run to keep up my training pace.

I assumed that this session would be the same.  The women last week were more enthusiastic. This week, however, there were two new women. I was paired up with one. Well, she has run before and she is fast.  In fact, this will be a good workout for me.  And the other new woman was even faster. She may have been an elite runner in her country.

She doesn’t speak English well but guess where she is from??

PARIS!!!

Woo Hoo!  We were both thrilled to be able to speak French together.  Mine is a little rusty but I did teach high school French for 22 years!

So far we are only running 1 1/2 minutes at a time but I think I will not be able to slack off this session.

  • Racing

I race every weekend.  But I do not have one scheduled this weekend.  It feels so strange that I almost signed up for one in Saratoga on Saturday.

Luckily Denise (Judy‘s friend) will run 10 miles with me on Sunday for my last long run before my half marathon.

I will try to refrain from running that 5k. (No promises.)

  • Tennis Elbow

The good: it doesn’t affect my running.  The bad: it’s not any better. But like any athlete, I took ibuprofen, taped it and wore a band and then played tennis.

The good: it didn’t affect my tennis. The bad: it’s not any better.

  • Work

I am walking EVERYDAY!! I started out with a 100 mile goal but I upped it to a lofty 400.

mmm

I usually walk to the park (with a stop at Starbucks).  Yesterday, I walked to the library to return a book.

  • Next Half Marathon

It’s on April 24 (in 10 days) and I am not really stressing about it.  Is it because it’s #19? Or because I know the route and it is very HILLY.  Sometimes it’s a relief to know that you will not get a PR.

I plan to enjoy the race.  I hope that it is nice weather and I can hang out by the lake afterwards.

The picture below is the view from the start & finish line (in 2011).

Monday Running Update

mon r u
Last Week:

  • Monday Snowstorm.  Yes, in April.!!! My group run got cancelled.  I actually went for a short walk to the park and back but it was freezing so then I used the exercise bike.  Not happy with Spring 2016.
img_9053

snow as almost as high as my Grande cup

  • Tuesday – Even though it was windy and cold, I did go for a walk to the park (& Starbucks). I skipped tennis in favor of my re-scheduled Freihofer Training Challenge group run. (My tennis elbow is still on the mend anyway.) It was freezing but I survived some 1 minute sprints with the speedsters.

Then I went to the mall to get more steps and do more bargain shopping.

  • Wednesday – I continued my walk a day at work. After work was my first run with the STEM Couch to 5k group. I got there early and ran a sluggish 3 mile loop.

This STEM group was so enthusiastic. I can’t wait to run with them again.

  • Thursday – I got to work and found 9 dozen of the best doughnuts in our area. And this is “our be healthy month!” WTH?

img_9077

Of course I had to have one…or 2.

img_9078

the Cappuccino one was the best!

I tried to squeeze in a run before the rain but was not successful. But I did use the treadmill before I left work to go to my hair appt.

Anyone watch Call the Midwife?

  • Friday – Other than one walk, it was a real rest day followed by an evening of mah jongg (and to bed too late!)
bv

there was beachball volleyball during lunch but my tennis elbow prevented me from playing

still waiting for tulips in the park – this was the only flower I saw during my walk

  • Saturday – Ran a chilly 5k race. I switched from the 10k to the 5k because I didn’t want to run the hills.
img_9126

not a PR but 1st in my AG and an apple pie

While I was waiting for the results, I ran another 3 miles.

img_9125

Then I drove to the Zim Smith Trail to run more miles with Judy and her friend Denise. I celebrated my 12 mile run day with delicious bread pudding.

img_9124Later I went out to dinner with the hubby.

  • Sunday – I knew we had to pay so I left this to the last minute…TAXES!!! And laundry, grocery shopping, cleaning…not my favorite activities. But it was still sunny when I was done so I went for a walk.

23.5 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:  (2 weeks until Half Marathon #19)

  • Monday  Freihofer Challenge Group Run (4 miles)
  • Tuesday – rest, tennis?
  • Wednesday 3 mile run, STEM Couch to 5k run
  • Thursday rest, mall walk with BFF ?
  • Friday 3 mile run, mah jongg
  • Saturday rest, day with mentee & sons
  • Sunday – 10 miles
Once again, I am linking up for the Weekly Wrap hosted by Holly @ HoHoRuns and Tricia @ MissSippiPiddlin.   See rules here.

2016 Bacon Hill Bonanza 5K Race Recap

April 9, 2016 – Start: 10 am

I signed up for 10K instead of the 5k.  They were both the same price and I needed to run 12 miles before my half marathon in 2 weeks.

10 K

Then I remembered the hills of the second half of the 10K and that the 5k was an out and back and would be mostly flat.

5k – not as flat as it looks

So I changed my mind and switched to the 5k and then planned to run 9 miles after.

I ran this race for the past two years and loved it. They had great food – the usual food but also chili and homemade muffins & cookies (including gluten free ones).

20140412-163900.jpg

And there was chocolate milk, fresh from the dairy.

20140412-163910.jpg

Plus, I won a homemade apple pie as first in my age group for the past two years. (28:01, 28:56…not sure I would run this fast this year?)

The race started at 10 am which was good since it would be an hour minute drive from my house.

Again the weather was tricky. What to wear? I was brave the last 2 years and wore a skirt, a baseball cap and no gloves.

This year I wimped out. … It was cold in the morning. Winter has returned to our region.  So I opted for a long sleeve shirt, jacket, skirt attached to capris, compression socks, gloves & a winter hat. I am so tired of winter running clothes but it is still cold out…

I got to the race early and found a parking spot in a field next to the church.  The race started at the church  in the town of Bacon Hill, a small farming town with awesome scenery. (It reminded me of Vermont.)

these pics are from last year & the year before …everything still looked the same)

It was chillier than I thought.  It was in the 30s and 20s with the windchill. Brrrr!! At least, it was sunny!

img_9082

nice shirt with NO advertising and a pasta scoop?

I didn’t think that I would know anyone at this run since two years ago, I hung out with Holly who was in the Turkey Trot training group and now the FRW training group but she had to work this year and couldn’t race.

But I did bump into someone who recognized me from another race.  We chatted about racing, of course.

At the last minute, I decided to shred my jacket. I didn’t bring a windbreaker and it seemed too heavy.

Soon it was time for the race to start. The pastor read a prayer, the church bells rang and we were off.

The 5k was an out and back.  The 10k veered to the right and supposed had hills and breath taking views.

I decided to go out fast.  I always have positive splits so why try not to.  It isn’t as flat as the map shows.  The hills are rolling throughout but not that bad. Even I could run up them.

I loved all the signs along the route.

This one as my favorite:14002247934_c17e330207_z

The wind was a killer.  I was freezing. There were volunteers on the course calling out times. I occasionally glanced down at my Garmin to make sure I was running in the low 9’s. Eventually we turned around and headed back… The wind had calmed down and I was actually very comfortable.

I stopped for water and walked for a little bit.  Not because I was thirsty but because I was was out of breath.  I never seemed to get into my groove. I guess I need to do some speed drills.

I thought I had gotten a second wind but then again, I was winded.

I knew at this point, there would be no PR.  That was fine because I wasn’t expecting one.

As I approached the finish line, I realized that I could still finish under 28 minutes, Unfortunately I had no gas left and I barely made it.  My Gamin said: 27:54!!  And I was pleased.

img_9083

I immediately made a bee line for the chocolate milk.  Boy, was it good.  I had at least 2 cups.

They had the same great food (chili, muffins, cookies, fruit) as last year plus a vegetarian dish and pizza.. I sampled it all! YUM!

While everyone was waiting for the results and all the 10k runners to be done, I went out to run another 3 miles.

img_9084

img_9085

I ran a mile and then saw that they posted the results…Mine was listed as 27:56 and I was first my age group.

img_9091

Since it was so cold, they said that they wouldn’t be handing out awards and to just pick yours up.

And I won a pie again!!!

img_9096I checked out the 10k results, as well. I would have won there too.

Splits:

mile 1- 8:44
mile 2 – 9:22
mile 3 – 9:04
.1 – 7:44

          27:54

All in all, I loved this race.  I will definitely do it again…maybe even the 10K someday. I was happy with my time.  I didn’t go all out but I did beat my time for this course from both the last two years.

I put the pie in my car and headed out to run more miles. I ran one more.

img_9090

img_9093

Then I returned to hear the results of the raffle.  I didn’t win so I left to run one more mile.

img_9094

6 mile down and it was finally time to leave to to meet Judy and her friend, Denise at the Zim Smith Trail to run another 6 miles.

It was a half hour away but I still got there early and had to wait until they had finished their 4 miles. Then we all headed out together. We ran in a different direction from my last time there. I thought it was a lot more scenic – a bridge, a few waterfalls, etc.

img_9097

img_9101

img_9099

I was very happy to have the company. We ran together for most of the miles until I got impatient and ran ahead at the end.

img_9107

img_9113

After we were done with our run, we all had some dessert at the bakery where we parked our cars.

img_9118

delicious bread pudding

After a long soak in the hot tub, I was revived enough to go out to dinner with my hubby.

So I completed my longest training run – 12 miles! It was actually – 3.1 + 1+ 1+1 +6.  Still counts, right?

Happy Running! Are you running or racing this weekend?
