Polar Cap 4m Race Report

polarcap15

I have run this race with blogger AJH several times and it was a tough hilly one but still fun.

Polar Cap - 2nd place in AG

Here we are winning AG awards in 2010

AJH got 2nd place...we won a lunch bag which matches the race shirt

AG awards again in 2013

I ran with her last year but only she got an award.

20140201-171907.jpg

AJH’s award in 2014

AJH was running it again and I was looking forward to seeing her.

10872764_10155126109310174_3510530694647973051_o

don’t like that hill at the end but apparently we only run half the hill at the beginning this year

20140202-204346.jpg

during last year’s race

Also the weather was better than it has been – meaning it wasn’t snowing yet and it wasn’t sub-zero.  But it was COLD!!! In the teens when I left with snow showers predicted.

So I bundled up in my usual running layers and drove the hour ride up to Lake George.

Believe it or not, the temps warmed up to the 20s (heat wave!) and I discarded one layer.

I was glad I got there an hour early because I barely got a parking spot.  This new location does not have enough parking,  Many runners parked elsewhere and may have had their cars towed.

When I got there, AJH was already there. (She is hard core – drove all the way from VT.)

10924736_10155136809115174_8096058827417712730_n

nice to have gender-specific shirts – short sleeved – in the winter??

I chatted with some runners that I knew who were trying to talk me into  running a maathon.

Then I hung out inside with AJH until the race was about to start.

IMG_4960

I felt a little pressure to run fast since I didn’t win an AG award last year.  But you never know what will happen when you run a race and there are some fast runners in my age group. And this is a hilly course.

Previous Polar Cap Races:

2011 – 40:11
2013 – 41:40
2014 – 40:10

Runnin’ of the Green 4 milers (a flat course):

2014 – 38:07
2011 – 38:02 PR

Rabble Ramble:

2014 – 38:06

I have not been doing any 5ks or any speed work at all. My runs on the weekend have been long. So I was prepared for a slower time. Not a PR but maybe a course PR if I was lucky.

IMG_4984

I remembered the race started going uphill and my legs felt sluggish. Luckily they felt better as the race went on.

I walked after the first mile when there was a steepish hill.

IMG_4982

Then we went downhill for a while and it was slippery around the turns.

IMG_4983

I just plodded along admiring the scenery and trying for a consistent pace.

IMG_4968

This race has a very pretty course.  You run past the lake (which totally frozen & snow-covered)

IMG_4970

I really suck on the hills, I walked part of each one.  On one hill, while I was walking, a woman yelled “Don’t walk! Shuffle.” I replied that I wish I could. (In the end, I did pass her!!)

polar cap 4m

heading toward the last hill

Unfortunately, the last half mile of this race is straight uphill!

polarcap 2

I think I walked twice on that hill because I wanted to finish strong. But I really had nothing left at the end.

I crossed according to the clock at 37:40! A NEW PR!!!!

IMG_4961

I was generally happy with the race.  I ran it faster than I thought I would.

AJH finished a little after me.

IMG_4963

We went inside to wait for the age group awards.

There was soup and fruit and baked goods – I am a sucker for home-made stuff and ate quite a few cookies. I also had the soup and 2 cups of chocolate milk.

pc4m

And we both won awards!!! Woo Hoo!! AJH for the 8th time.  She keeps her streak going!

IMG_4966

3rd and 2nd

Splits:

mile 1 – 9:12
mile 2 – 9:31
mile 3 – 9:40
mile 4 –  9:44

(Garmin time: 37:38)

Positive splits!!.  What else is new?

After AJH left, I was debating on changing my clothes and leaving or running more.

But with a big snowstorm coming, I decided to take advantage.  So I decided to run to the Winter Carnival in town.

IMG_4971

This was the first day of the event which is held every weekend in February.

IMG_4973

I wandered a bit.

IMG_4974

not sure what they were dressed up for?

Then I visited with friends who were volunteering.

IMG_4976

The outhouse races were beginning but I didn’t stay to watch.

IMG_4977

I ran around the lake and through the town and then to my friend’s house.  I talked to her hubby for about 2 hours! Then I ran back to my car.

IMG_4978-0

I wonder if the horses get cold?

I covered 4 miles in total.

IMG_4979

I may have stopped here…

Next, I drove north  to Bolton Landing. I ran to our marina, through town and to the Sagamore.

IMG_4985

the marina – my happy place (in the summer)

I stopped in a few stores…

IMG_4988

and inside the Sagamore before running back to car.

IMG_4986

one last view of the lake

Another 2 miles covered!

You are never too old to set another goal…does this mean I should run a marathon?

I decided to call it a day and head home.  (My LG friends wanted me to stop back for the car parade and the bonfire but I was pooped and wanted to drive before the snow started.)

Tuesdays on the Run: 2015 Race Plans Part 1

Erika @ MCM Mama Runs hosts Tuesdays on the Run with April @ Run the great wide somewhere and Patty @ My no-guilt life!

This week’s topic is: 2015 Race Plans

I run so many races (33 last year) that I am just listing some of the races I plan to run in the first 6 months of 2015:

  • West Palm Beach Half Marathon – Ocean Views and in Florida in the winter. And visiting 4 friends too!

January 17, 2015

  • Polar Cap 4 miler – This hilly race takes in Lake George.  I have done it several times before.  The best part is that I get to run with fellow blogger AJH. Afterwards, I can go to the lake George Winter Carnival also.

February 7, 2015

  • Shamrock 5K – I would have liked to run a longer race like I did last year but this one fit.  I am so excited to be running this race with my friend Mary in CA.

shamrock5k

  • Runnin’ of the Green – this is a very popular local 4 miler.  This year, the location will be different.  Hopefully, it will be as flat as the previous Green Island course.

March 14, 2015

  • Delmar Dash – This is a 5 miler that is very close to where I live and it is flat!!
dd14

March 29, 2015

  • Bacon Hill 5k or 10k in Schuylerville, NY. I ran this for the first time last year and loved this country race.

April 11, 2015

  • When I didn’t get into the NYC Half Marathon, I registered for the Asbury Park Half Marathon to keep me running through the winter. I have a friend that lives an hour from this race and I will be running along the ocean!!!!!aphm
  • Cherry Blossom 5k in Niskayuna, NY.  Another race from last year that I enjoyed a lot.

April 26, 2015

  • Spring Run Off 10k in Albany, NY. This race is run along the Hudson River and is a popular local 5k and 10K race.  There is a free pasta dinner the night before. I met some awesome runners last year and hope to see them again.
springrunoff

May 2, 2015

  • Mother’s Day 5K in Schenectady, NY.  I ran this race in 2013 and plan to run again this year.  I may be mentoring a someone from the GirlsontheRun program at this race, too. This 5k is very well-organized and has a chocolate fountain afterwards.  Need I say more?

md5k15

  • Freihofer’s Run for Women – This is the only race that I have run every year so I want to keep my streak going.  This year, I signed up to be part of a training group like I did for the Troy Turkey Trot. I am looking forward to running with others.

frw15

  • When I did not get into the Covered Bridges Half Marathon on June 7,  I registered for the first annual Walkway Half Marathon in Poughkeepsie.  The course will include the William R. Steinhaus Dutchess Rail Trail and the Walkway Over the Hudson as well as Marist College and the Hudson Valley Rail Trail.

HALF MARATHON  – June 13, 2015

  • Adirondack Distance Run – It’s a 10-miler.  Rolling hills from Lake George Village to Bolton Landing (where we keep our boat.) I did it last year for the first time and can’t wait to run it again!

June 20, 2015

A Defining Moment

As I train for my TENTH half marathon, I started to think about how my running has changed and when?

For several years, I ran 1-1 1/2 miles several times a week and then ran a 5K on the weekend.  I didn’t own a Garmin but instead used a chip attached to my shoe that tracked my mileage to a Nike+ app on my iPod.  It wasn’t accurate but I didn’t know it at  the time and it didn’t matter.  My goal in running was to break 30 minutes in a 5K and I was happy when I did.  Being in my late 50s, I was faster than most in my age group so I was content.  I didn’t like the cold weather so I didn’t run during the winter months and started back up in the spring each year. I wore shorts, cotton tops and never heard of compression socks.

100_0235

jailhouserock5k

Then came my Defining Moment on October 24, 2010. I was scheduled to run my FIRST 10K.  I was nervous and almost changed my mind to run the 5K.

But I got a migraine and couldn’t run it. In fact, I wound up in the ER with blood pressure of  197/109. They & I feared that it would lead to a stroke.  They did all kinds of tests and all were negative but it was very scary.  At the time, I still played tennis a lot but  as I lay in the hospital, I worried that I would be an invalid and that I could no longer run.

The next day, I signed up for my FIRST HALF MARATHON!  I decided to stop being a wimp and go for it.  Life is short  and no one knows what the future will bring. So I decided to go from running 3.1 miles to 13.1 miles. Just like that.

I didn’t tell anyone.  My friends would have thought I was nuts and I also thought that I may not be successful.

So I bought compression socks, a running skirt and a Garmin watch. And I did long runs on the weekends to train.

My First Half Marathon was great — the best day ever. And I haven’t looked back since.

I have run 4 milers, 5 milers, 10 milers, 10Ks, 15Ks and 8 more half marathons.

I’m not sure if October 24, 2010 didn’t happen, I would have signed up for that first Half marathon????

I continue to run 5Ks and I love them but because of adding longer runs, I think my 5K times are faster. (I recently had a PR.)

Happy Running! Has your running changed?  Have you had a “defining moment”?

13. Run over 800 miles.   4  miles so far.  I’m on my way.

14. Continue to blog almost everyday. Yes! So I am doing pretty good so far. Things to work on the next 6 months:

  • Go to yoga regularly
  • PR in a 5K
  • race in a new state
  • run in NYC
  • continue to race each month
  • continue to sign up for new races
  • STAY  HEALTHY

Happy Running! Do you have yearly goals?  If so, how are you doing so far this year?

  4. Vermont – 5K
  5. Pennsylvania – 5K, 13.1

I wish I started running earlier. I used to have a job that allowed me to go to conferences all over the country. There was a 5k at each conference. They always closed out in hours. At the time, I thought people were nuts to get up at 7 am to run.  But for the last conference that I went to (2006), I registered and walked the 5k (in 45 min.) I started to see how much fun everyone was having.

I visited 8 cities/states for those conferences (San Diego, Seattle, Baltimore, Atlanta, Chicago, San Antonio, Philly, New Orleans). Too bad, I wasn’t a runner then.

Now I am 61. I have run in 5 states so far.

Run in all 50 states?! Not likely.  But I will do my best to run in some more different states.

I’d say my goal is 15 states.

Many bloggers are pursuing the goal of running in ALL 50 states:

Happy Running! How many states have you run in?  Do you plan to run in all 50?
