To The Gorge Book Review and My Memories of Andrea

When I heard that Emily had published this book, back in December, I pre-ordered a copy.

It came in the mail after my recent vacation in Florida, and I immediately sat down to read it.

I had followed Emily’s amazing feat of attaining a FKT in crossing the Oregon PCT (and raising over $30k). However, why she did it was what led me to read her book.

To honor her mom!!

Her mom, Andrea, was a runner, biker, triathlete and most importantly, a close friend. Though we met through our obsession with running/racing, we shared many interests (travel, reading, cats, taking photos…)

Andrea and I had run a race called the Polar Cap Run together SEVEN times. It’s one of her favorite races. It’s hilly and always freezing (hence the race’s name). But I did it and had fun because she was there to share the experience. Due to our “advanced” age, we also usually won age group awards.

The last time we did this race together was in 2019.  She had to walk it since she was recovering from surgery related to her cancer.

And yes, Andrea’s cancer diagnosis rocked my world, for sure. But she was strong and I was pretty confident that she would beat it.

She did not and died in January of 2020.  They dedicated this race to her that year.

I started reading Andrea’s blog in 2008 when I started running. She inspired me from the beginning. We are the same age exactly!! But she has run longer, farther, faster…even has competed in triathlons.

We met face-to-face for the first time at a race in 2010 and since then we have completed many races together (in addition to the Polar Cap race). I have even stayed at her house in VT twice (and slept in Emily’s bed).

She has also visited my area each year to participate in a duathlon. And I have always come to the race to cheer her on.

She finally retired from teaching and the gift from her colleagues was a surprise trip to run the Freihofer Run for Women. (It’s my favorite race and so she wanted to run it).

And then she returned to walk it in 2019 while undergoing chemo.

I forgot to mention that Andrea lived in Northern Vermont and would drive up to 4 hours to run a race (even a 5k!!)

Reading Emily’s book brought back all my memories of Andrea. Emily proved what we as runners already know. Running is much more than physical exercise. It can help heal what needs healing.

Rave reviews are in and are much more eloquent than I can be.  Here a few:

This book is a beautiful tribute to the spiritual anatomy of the human heart, and the power of the wilderness to break us down and shape us into something far wilder and more tender. Every runner knows, or eventually learns, that running and grief can come together to reshape the dissonance of a broken heart into something like peace. Very few can put this experience into words. Halnon’s story invites us to look at our own broken hearts, erode the walls between our protected self and our essence, and at the end of it all, jump up and cheer.”– Lauren Fleshman, New York Times bestselling author of Good for a Girl

“To the Gorge is much more than a book about running. It will speak to anyone with a grieving soul and Halnon is a heartfelt guide for anyone on their own path to redemption and revitalization. Bold, courageous, and enthralling.“– Kathrine Switzer, author of Marathon Woman and Founder/Director of 261 Fearless

“To the Gorge is so much more than a book about running, or even grief and loss. It’s about how to live, and how to make your time in this world count and mean something. No book has ever made me cry more than this one—the kind of cathartic, full-body sobs that will leave you feeling inspired, grateful, and likely pondering how to create a legacy as powerful as Andrea Halnon’s. A must-read for endurance athletes, aspiring endurance athletes, and anyone who is or has ever navigated a world-shattering loss of their own. This book will make you feel all of your biggest feelings, and invite you to think about how you want to live.”– Ali Feller, Host of the Ali on the Run Show podcast

Happy Running!  Anyone remember Andrea? Her blog was “Age Groups Rock” and on IG, she was “andyja”. Do you think that you will read Emily’s book?

FFF: Five Great Things About Running Friends

Today’s Topic is: Five Great Things About Running Friends

Only FIVE? LOL

You know I love my running friends and here’s why:

1.Their company when running seems hard, weather is unfavorable, mojo is lacking…

Image result for running with friends

I don’t know how I would get some of my runs done without them.

2. Their Advice (or maybe I should call it counseling)

And it’s not only about running. We chat about everything, both good and bad.

3. Their Support

After bad runs, during races, etc.

4.Race-cations.

I’ve gone to places because of my running friends that I normally would not have visited.

Portland, ME

5.They’re fun!!

We’ve shared so many laughs!!!

Happy Running! What could you add? Please share.

2024 Tropicool 5k Race Recap

MAY 5, 2022 – 7:30AM

As you may remember, this race took place during my annual non-running tennis vacation in Naples, Florida. I play tennis every morning and then spend the afternoon on the beach.  Each evening I go out for drinks, dinner and dessert with my tennis friends. Eight days of pure relaxation and enjoyment… (every May since 2005)

I love it.  It’s usually my only vacation that doesn’t include a race.  You have to admit that racing during a vacation does add an element of stress.

Well, in 2017. we changed our dates and I happened upon a 5k race that took place on the Sunday during our stay. One of my friends offered to get up at the crack of dawn and drop me off and another offered to pick me up.

Despite the loops and warm temps, I had a blast and did fairly well.

I also unexpectedly bumped into a tennis friend, Rebecca, who had moved to Naples.

As a result, I signed up for the same 5k in 2018 and 2019. I won an age group award each time and met up with Rebecca.

Our vacation was cancelled due to COVID in 2020 and the race in 2021 did not occur during our time in Naples.

So I was pretty excited to run this race again in 2022.  The downside was that Rebecca died suddenly in 2021 and I knew that the race would remind me of her sadly.

I decided to run the race anyway and each year, if I was able. in Rebecca’s honor.

and yes, again I won an age group award

However since I was still recovering from a broken foot, I decided to skip the race in 2023 but this year, I put it back on my racing schedule.

Pre-Race Activities and Preparations:

The day before the race, we went out to an awesome dinner which included a few glasses of wine.  (Oops I don’t usually drink the night before a race but I was on vacay…) Then we stopped at an ice cream shop.  Obviously, it turned out to be a later night than normal.

Here again is the description of the race and the course map:

Enjoy a wonderful 5K race that showcases the beautiful streets of Olde Naples. This course is two loops starting on Broad Street.

elevation according to Strava – FLAT!!

Race Day:

Sunday morning, I groggily ate my usual race breakfast at 5:30 am.  As she did in previous years, my friend Catalina agreed to drop me off at the race start.  I was familiar with the race location so I didn’t need to arrive as early as I did the first year.

There was no packet pick up before the race this year.  So I got my bib on race day. The swag was a shirt. And I had to hide it under a tree since I did have a bag or a car.

Then I walked a block to the beach to hang out until around 7:15 am.

This was not a big race.  There were about 250 runners – all ages and very friendly.

The sun was now out and it was starting to get warm. I checked the weather app on my phone. Holy cow!!! 80 degrees. 99% humidity!

I wore my usual race attire minus the compression socks:

the same outfit as 2022!! LOL

As you can see from the map, the course winds around town and through the neighborhoods twice. And it was flat!!

I had no plan for the race – just finish and get back to my friends so I could play tennis with them. (Gone are the days when I finished this race in 27:xx!!)

I also haven’t raced in weather this warm since last August. This made me a little nervous. Can I run well in the heat? Will I die? LOL

getting ready to start

Mile 1:

From the get go, my legs felt like lead but my biggest problem was that I had a hard time breathing and I felt dizzy. Was it the heat?  Most likely it was not being acclimated to the humidity. I couldn’t wait to get to the water stop…

Actually I could not wait to walk…

Mile 2:

It seemed like forever but I think it was during mile 2.  I stopped for water and walked for a while (longer than the first walk).

I continued my running which was painful and seemed to be like a slog…

The course ran through neighborhoods with a few twists and turns and  then repeated itself.

I walked whenever I felt I had to… I really didn’t care about my time as long as I finished.

Mile 3 – 3.1:

I actually felt worse after walking so I ran and tried to just get to the finish line without puking.

Eventually the arch appeared and I gave it my all.

this was from a video

I was shocked when I crossed at 31:xx. I felt so much slower.

Post Race Activities:

I grabbed some water but skipped the refreshments which were only bars and navel oranges.

I quickly checked the results to see if I won an award. And I did!!

I told the RD that I had to leave so he gave me my award before the awards ceremony.

I texted my friends Lorraine and Pat and they had already arrived to pick me up. It was 8:30 am and so I had plenty of time to get ready to play tennis at 9:30.

Additional Race Reflections:

Definitely a tough one and one of my slowest 5ks in years but hey, I did it. (and it was a little faster than the 5k I ran in Feb but that one had a bridge you had to cross twice…)

And I will do it again!

Racing for me is always enjoyable (at least afterward.)

Age Graded results always make me feel better!!

as do awards…

Positives:

  • flat course
  • well organized
  • nice shirt (gender-specific)
  • creative age group award (picture frame)
  • important charity (scholarships to HS students)
  • podium for winners

Negatives:

  • Rebecca was no longer there. 😦
  • 2 looped course
  • Warm temps and humidity

Would I recommend this race?

Yes! There was a lot of enthusiasm and runners of all ages.

Final Stats:

Next Up:

May 18

Happy Running! Ever run a 5K race while on vacation? Do you find it hard to race in the hot weather? Please share.

Weekly Run Down for 5.5.4-5.12.24: Returning Up North a Year Older

I’m back from my tennis vacation in Naples, Florida (check out FB for many pix) and while I was there, I celebrated my birthday.

Last Week –

  • Saturday – We had arrived on Thursday and today we continued with similar activities to Friday.

My friends took a tennis lesson and I went for a short run/walk (the heat and humidity were tough). After my run, I joined them to play doubles.

Then we packed a lunch and headed to the beach where we relaxed, cooled off, read, enjoyed the sunshine (and often walked to a nearby restaurant with a bar).

Eventually we left and in the evening, we went out to dinner.

  • Sunday Tropicool 5k.

Except for last year when I was recovering from a broken foot, I’ve run this race during this vacation.  I’m not sure why since 5ks in the heat are a challenge.  Again it was and again I enjoyed it. I even won my age group.

I rushed home to play tennis with my friends. Then instead of the beach, we visited the Naples Botanical Gardens.

It was lovely and the musical swings were fun… I especially loved the waterlilies

For dinner, we drove to Ft. Myers to go to the Broadway Palm Theatre. The food was great and the show, The Addams Family Musical, was awesome.

  • Monday – As most days, I went for a short run/walk before playing tennis.

We chose a different beach today (Clam Pass) and it was beautiful.

Tonight was book club night. We got take out (instead of going out to a restaurant) and had a great discussion on The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store.

  • Tuesday – Pretty much the same as the previous morning except that I didn’t play tennis.

In the afternoon, we went back to the beach we visited last week (Vanderbilt).

Tonight was my favorite dinner yet. We ate at a nice French restaurant (with Annie, the lady from whom we rent each year.)

  • Wednesday – This morning, I went for a long walk instead of a run and then played tennis.

Since this was our last night, I wanted to see a sunset. So we went to the beach we visited on Monday since it had a restaurant.

We spent the afternoon there and even stayed for dinner.

And as in everyday, the weather was perfect. The sunset was gorgeous.

  • Thursday – MY BIRTHDAY!  Several of my friends had to leave early. But I still enjoyed being on vacation on my birthday.

Of course I had to run/walk 7.1k (more walk than run) and then get my free coffee.

Afterward, we packed up, went out to lunch and then headed to the airport.

Happily, the flights home were uneventful.

  • Friday – I took the day off from work to recover from my vacation.

I went to the gym first thing.

After unpacking and laundry, I took a quick trip to Washington Park to check out the tulips.

mostly past peak but still beautiful

Then I played mah jongg in the evening.

my surprise b-day cake!!

  • Saturday – Long Run and Brunch Day.

I had FOMO today since there were two races that I had wanted to run.

But I had been really slacking off on my long runs and I have a half marathon in ONE week!

I got to the rail trail early to run a few miles with Barbara and then was joined by others.

It was hard but I got it done.

Thought about 12 miles but ended up with 10… the Hay is in the Barn!

For brunch I just chatted and had coffee since I was going out to lunch with my stepson, DIL and granddaughter.

  • Sunday –  It will be a gym visit… maybe some yard work or hike (weather dependent).

This Coming Week on the Run –

  • Monday –  run, birthday dinner with my BFF
  • Tuesday – GYM, walk with friends
  • Wednesday – run, TC mentoring

Weekly Run Down for 4.28.24-5.5.24: Tennis Anyone?

I used to be really into tennis.

August 2010 – Playing Tennis in USTA 3.0 State Championships

But once I started running, I’ve played less and less and now I don’t play at all…

…that is except during my annual vacation in Naples, Florida. Then I play everyday…

Last Week –

  • Sunday – I had elaborate fitness plans for today…

I had wanted to go to the gym first thing… then at some point in the day finish my long run (that began the day before) and since it was such a nice day, go for a walk or easy hike on a nearby trail.

Well, none of that happened… and sometimes life gets in the way.

My hubby is still depressed about losing our cat so we went cat shopping all morning.

Almost got one (but someone beat us to him) but I was relieved since truthfully, I am ok with ONE cat.  She’s perfect.

The rest of the day was spent re-potting plants, laundry, grocery shopping, other errands and cooking meals for the week.

When I was finally ready to head out, it had started raining.

  • Monday – A busy work day.  No time to get to the gym before work but I did get outside for a run after work (finally.)

and the temps are warming up

  • Tuesday – I got up super early and headed to the gym and also had time to squeeze in a run at lunch since I had a hair appointment after work.

the predicted rain never happened but it was windy and muggy…

The forecast was wrong and it did rain all evening.

  • Wednesday – Back to the gym.  It would be awhile until I got there again…

I packed during lunch. And after work, I went to mentor week 7 participants of the TC group.

I had to go into the office so on the way home, I planned to stop and run,  then pack in the evening (instead of my mentoring gig.)

A trainer called in sick and so I had to rush home to do his training. Hence, no lunch run.

Plan C:  After my training, pack, join the TC group, do some last minute errands and try to go to bed early.

in one week, we went from winter to summer (70’s today)

  • Thursday – We took a very early flight to Fort Myers, Florida and then we rented 2 vans and drove to our villas at World Tennis Center in Naples.

We pretty much have a set routine since we (10 of us) have done this every May since 2005.

The first day, we stopped and had lunch, got settled in our villas, hung out at the pool, went out to dinner. After dinner, we headed to the grocery store (to buy the basics for breakfast and lunches) before we crashed at home for the evening.

  • Friday & Saturday – My friends took a tennis lesson first thing in the morning. I went for a run and then I joined them to play doubles.

2022 (but most likely the same)

After tennis, we changed into bathing suits and drove to the beach where we spent the afternoon relaxing and deciding which restaurant to go to for dinner.

2023 (but most likely the same)

Check out FB and IG for this year’s pictures.

This Coming Week on the Run –

Ultimate Coffee Date for May 2024

It’s that time of the month…

time to join up with Coco & Deborah for their ultimate coffee date.

This is in honor of Jenny (who used this in a March post).

1.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that May is my favorite month:

    • My annual tennis vacation to Naples, Fl.
    • My birthday (Jenn is my b-day twin).

May is my birthday month, so I'll be happily accepting gifts, food, drinks and money all month long.

    • Tulips in bloom.
    • Boating on Lake George begins.
    • Lots of races (5k, 10 mi and half marathon).

2. Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I’m currently in Florida, We arrived yesterday. In addition to playing tennis (for the first time since last May), I plan to run everyday.

3. Over coffee…

I’d tell you that although I skipped this race last year, I did sign up again. Anyone surprised?

Tropicool 5k – 5/5/24 in Naples, FL

4.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that a local 5k race that was cancelled last year and re-located in previous years, has returned to its original date and location. I am tempted to sign up…

it’s dedicated to Summer (a STEM participant) who died of a drug overdose

5. Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I’m really looking forward to sunshine for my Brooklyn Half Marathon that ends in Coney Island.  It has poured the other two times I’ve run it. It’s my last shot. Hotels are too expensive so I don’t plan to register again for this race!!

Does that look fun?

Happy Running! What’s new with you?  Please share.

2024 Bacon Hill Bonanza 10K Race Recap

                 April 27, 2024 – 10:00 am

Every year, I plan to sign up for the 10k and then I chicken out.

10K

The 5k is pretty flat!! So why not?

Pre-Race Activities and Preparations:

This small race in the country has always been one of my favorite 5k races. I ran it for the five years straight (2013-18) and again in 2021 and enjoyed it each time. (I was out of town in 2019 and 2022. It was cancelled in 2020 and I was injured in 2023).

It was always well-organized and had great food – the usual food but also chili and homemade muffins & cookies (including gluten free ones).

20140412-163900.jpg

And there was chocolate milk, fresh from the dairy. (You know how I LOVE chocolate milk post-race.)

20140412-163910.jpg

Plus, I also won a homemade pie as first in my age group for the five years. 28:56, 28:01, 27:54, 27:32, 27:01. Yes, it seems that I was getting faster but then in 2021, I finished at 28:20.  (Still speedy compared to my latest 5ks).

That being said, I decided to not stress about having a fast time and to push myself to tackle the hilly miles… yup, I registered for the 10k (for the first time). Besides, I was supposed to be training for an upcoming half marathon.

Packet pick-up was the day before. But since I lived so far away, I planned to pick mine up the morning of the race.

Again the weather was tricky. What to wear? Will it be cold or will it be warm (as in 2021)? Lately it has felt more like winter than spring…

So this was the plan: long sleeved shirt and capris (with compression calf sleeves) – see pic below.

Of course, I had pizza for my race carb loading (yes I carb load even for 10ks. lol)

Race Day:

The race started at 10 am which was great since it would be an hour drive from my house.

After my race breakfast of oatmeal and coffee, I left my house around 8:00 am and met my friend Heidi in Round Lake.  I had talked her into running this race with me but she chose the 5k.

We got to the race early (around 9:00 am) and found a parking spot in a grassy field next to the church. The race started at the church in the town of Bacon Hill, a small farming town with awesome scenery. (It reminded me of Vermont.)

20140412-163933.jpg

these pics are from other years…everything still looked the same)

20140412-163921.jpg

20140412-164000.jpg

So as soon as we arrived, we picked up our shirts and bibs and then we went back to Heidi’s car to drop them off.

I wasn’t sure if I would know anyone else at this race since many of the runners that I usually run this race with were not coming (There were a few other local races scheduled.).

I stopped by the timing truck to say hello to my former FTC coach who usually asks me if I was going to PR.  But he wasn’t there. No pressure 🙂

We walked around a bit scouting out the logistics and trying to stay warm.

one of the reasons I love this race – this local dairy and their chocolate milk

But I did bump into a few runners that I knew and we chatted. A guy came up to be and said that he loved my blog.  He had just started running and picked this race based on my review.  (The 2nd race in a row where someone has been reading my blog… who knew?)

There was music playing and close to 200 runners. With your race entry, you also got a raffle ticket to possibly win some very cool prizes.

The sun was out so we both decided to ditch our jackets.

Course description:

The 10K Course will head North on Stonebridge Road and then will u-turn at 0.7 miles into the run to head South on Stonebridge Road. The route will then turn left onto Ballard Lane (dirt road). At the end of Ballard Lane, the course will then turn Left onto West River Road to head North. Continue North on West River Road, at 2.7 miles the course will then turn Right onto Harris Road (dirt road) and follow Harris Road until it loops back to the intersection of West River Road and Callahan Road (3.4 miles).  The course will continue straight onto Callahan Road until it intersects with Stonebridge Road (4.5 miles). At this point, runners will turn Left to head South on Stonebridge Road and return to the Bacon Hill Reformed Church to finish out the race (6.2 miles).

Garmin elevation chart…

The pastor read a prayer, the church bells rang and we were off.

I loved all the signs along the route. Many of them were riddles.  I wish I could remember them but they were a nice distraction.

My legs immediately protested my attempt for speed. I felt my short distance racing lay-off.

There were no volunteers on the course calling out times.  There were mile markers and a few scattered volunteers cheering on the runners.

I always have positive splits so I didn’t even glance at my watch until after the race. (I was correct.. see below.)

As indicated above, we headed out with the 5k runners and then tuned around. At this point we were running into a strong head wind.

Then we turned left on to a dirt road and left onto a long hilly road.  The scenery was beautiful.  We even ran along the Hudson River for a while.

The first huge long hill had me rethinking my choice to run this race.  I had a hard time walking up it… so I just shuffled (run/walk) along.  It was followed my some smaller hills where I did the same.  Finally the last steep hill..

We eventually looped back to the road we started on.

Of course that meant ending the race by running into a head wind. Oy!!

I felt very warm the whole race and rolled up my sleeves (I could have run in a shirt and short sleeves – spring time races are so hard to dress for.)

There were several water stops but the first one was not until almost mile 3 and then every mile or so after.

I had a GU in my pocket but never really felt the need to eat it.

Some pics from a run after a previous race:

The last few miles I ran with a lady who was running this race for the first time. Her teenage daughter talked her into it. She had run the same half I did 2 weeks ago.  We both agreed that those 13.1 miles were easier than this race.

Eventually, the finish line was in sight. I was out of gas and walked a few times so I could at least sprint at the end… especially since my friend Heidi was waiting to take a photo.

Post Race Activities:

I immediately grabbed a bottle of chocolate milk

and checked to see if I won a raffle prize. Nope.

They were announcing the 5k awards so we checked out the refreshments – bananas, oranges, all sorts of home-made baked goods.

I was happy that my friend Sue won.

They also had 3 kinds of chili (veggie, beef, turkey) and it was delish.

Surprisingly I actually won my age group.

I guess some races, you just have to show up..

The 5k winners took all the apple pies..

On our way back to my car, we stopped for dessert:

Additional Race Reflections:

I usually only run one 10K a year (Troy Turkey Trot) and it is flat. So this race was most likely a PW.  This could be the year of the PW but I’m running!! But I am winning awards.

I enjoy racing and that’s all that matters.

Positives:

  • Ample parking.
  • Well marked course.
  • Beautiful countryside scenery
  • Funny signs on the course
  • Chocolate milk, chili and homemade cookies as post-race refreshments.
  • Super friendly volunteers
  • Raffle prizes
  • Free Photos
  • Virtual option

Negatives:

  • Hills!!
  • Need an earlier first water stop for the 10k

Would I recommend this race?

Yes.

It was super well-organized. Special attention was paid to EVERY detail.

Final Stats:

Official GT time: 1:07:00 (Garmin time: 1:06:54)

things got ugly after 3 miles

I wasn’t thrilled with my time. Then again I had zero goals. I was just running for me and because it makes me feel good to race.

Icing on the cake was the company, the food and an age group award.

All in all, I loved this race. I will definitely do it again…

Next Up:

A few shorter races –

Then finally:

2024 RBC Brooklyn Half

MAY 18!!

Happy Running!  Did you race this weekend? Do you have a big race coming up? Do you prefer an easy race flat race or a challenging hilly one? Please share.

Since today is Tuesday, I’m linking up with Zenaida (The Running Teacher) and Jenn (Runs with Pugs).

and tomorrow:

I’m also linking up with: co-hosts Coach Debbie RunsConfessions of a Mother RunnerMile by Mile, and Runs with Pugs

Weekly Run Down for 4.21.24-4.28.24: Searching for Speed

It seems like I’m always training for a half marathon. Feb, Mar, Apr, May…

Well, my next two (maybe three) races are shorter distances.

Will I be able to adapt and pick up a little speed?

Last Week –

  • Sunday – For the past 10 weeks, My friend Heidi and I had been mentoring a group of STEM runners.  Today was their goal race.

Since I had run 10 miles the day before, I was hoping to be paired up with someone who wanted to walk or run/walk slowly.

And a lady who only walks her 5ks wanted someone to walk with her.  Of course, I was thrilled.

We chatted about all kinds of things and she got a PR.

It was so rewarding to be part of this group and I can’t wait to do it again.

(other pics from the race are posted HERE.)

The downside was that it was very COLD!!! So Heidi and I had to warm up with a delicious brunch.

  • Monday – A day off from work. I met up with my running friend Sherry to log a few miles at the Crossings, followed by a side trip for coffee and to TJs.

the sunshine was nice but still chilly with the wind

I spent most of the afternoon doing yardwork!! (It was more exhausting than the 4 mile run).

  • Tuesday – A quick trip (finally) to the gym.

Back to the office for the day and a walk with friends afterward.

  • Wednesday – WFH and mentoring with the TC after work.

It rained in the morning and on and off all day (as it always seems to on Wednesday) but it stopped…

Week 6 so 10 min of straight running twice… I always hang back with the slowest runner

the wind made it feel so much colder

  • Thursday – Back to live teaching…

A run after at UAlbany  and then a meet-up at the mall for a walk with my BFF.

  • Friday – Same work schedule as Thursday but a quick visit with my granddaughter after work.

And after several missed weeks, I hosted mah jongg at my house.

  • Saturday – Bacon Hill Bonanza 10K. I have run the 5k many times but I decided to challenge myself on the hills of the 10k.

I was happy that one of my running friends offered to sign up too. She chose the 5k and we drove up together.

It was chilly when we arrived but the sun was shining so it seemed like a perfect day for racing… except for that wind!!

However, as I expected I struggled on those 6.2 hilly miles.

And the answer to question above is NO, not yet!! But we had fun and even won my age group (Sometimes you just have to show up.)

It was supposed to be a Long Run Saturday so I am still contemplating how to get those extra 5-6 miles done?  Later? Tomorrow? (Or can 6.2 hilly miles=11 flat miles?)

  • Sunday –  It will be a gym visit… maybe a hike or yard work and even start packing for my Florida vacation.

This Coming Week on the Run –

  • Monday –  run
  • Tuesday – GYM, hair appt.
  • Wednesday – run, TC mentoring
  • Thursday – flight to Fla.
  • Friday – run, tennis
  • Saturday run, tennis
  • Sunday –  run, tennis, theater tix

This Coming Week on the Blog –

  • Tuesday – Bacon Hill Bonanza 10k Race Recap
  • Friday –  Ultimate Coffee Date

Happy Running! Training for any big or small races this winter?  How’s the weather where you live? Are the flowers blooming? Do you prefer long distance races or short? Please share.
