Thining Out Loud Thursday: Racing, Confidence & Walking

thinking out loud

So I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

at the start

That’s 14 (almost 15) races in 4 months.

When I first started running, I would sign up for races as a motivator to get out there and run during the week.  I knew that my race performance would suffer if I didn’t.

Once I started running half marathons, I followed a plan so I would run during the week to train for the race.

I ran in order to race.

Many runners don’t race much at all.  They just run. And that’s perfectly fine.

But I need to race. I enjoy it.  I am not sure that I would run if I didn’t race.

  • I think that I have lost my confidence! From September to March, this is what happened:

5K  PR– 27:11 (Run for the Roc -9/28/14)
10 mi PR – 1:38:45 (Perfect 10 Miler – 10/26/14)
15K PR – 1:33:23 (Stockade-athon – 11/09/14)
10K PR– 57:03 (Troy Turkey Trot- 11/27/14)
Half Marathon PR –  2:09:40 (West Palm Beach Half – 1/17/15)

7K PR – 44:24 (HMRRC Winter Series #5 – 2/2/14)
4 mi PR – 37:27 (Runnin’ of the Green – 3/14/15)
5 mi PR –  45:26 (Delmar Dash – 3/29/15)

Yup, that’s a PR at every distance!! Even after several serious injuries and being OLD!  What a confidence booster!

1st

Since April, things have slowed down.  I have still been racing a lot but my times have been slow!  (That is slow for me.  Others would complain if they ran a mile in over 8 minutes.  Some would be thrilled run one in 10 minutes. We’re all different.)

I feel like I have gone backwards…to the time when I struggled to finish a 5k under 30 minutes and a half marathon under 2 1/2 hours.

Being the analytical person that I am, I have searched for the reasons…

–my feet started hurting during my April half (which was annoying to  say the least)
— I have cut back on my mileage (skipped runs)
–I have been running solo (no group runs)
–It is warmer (and humid)

All are very valid reasons.  I don’t expect PRs. But I would like to have a good race to bring my confidence back.

  • Galloway may have a point. Lately I have been reading his tips on several blogs. His most recent is about walking. If you have read any of my race recaps, you know that I DO WALK.

According to Galloway:

Compared to running constantly, the 1-minute walk break still results in runners feeling better, staying healthier, and going faster, but it can get even better! Limiting walk breaks to 30 seconds, or in some cases even less, while cutting the run time accordingly, gives all the same benefits, with even less fatigue and even faster times.

Why?

The greatest benefit of the walk break comes in the first 30 sec. Our heart rates come down, the running muscles relax, we catch our breaths, and the fatigue melts away. After 30 seconds of walking, we tend to slow down.
As fatigue sets in, that walk gets slower… This means faster running is needed to stay on pace, which creates more fatigue at the end of each running segment, so the walk will get slower, and so goes the downward spiral at the end of the race.

I do not officially use the RUN/WALK method.  But I do walk.

When I first started running, my goal was to run a race without walking.  I was thrilled when I could.  However, I didn’t get faster until I allowed myself to walk.

Not one of my PR times above were accomplished without walking.

Of course, I wish I was strong enough to run fast and not have to walk. But unfortunately I am not.

Happy Running! Any thoughts today?  What do you think about racing, PRs and/or walking?

Back to the Big Apple

A friend went to the Matisse exhibit at MoMa during Thanksgiving break.

“It is the most extensive exhibition of this period of Matisse’s work ever mounted,” … The exhibition follows Matisse as he begins with small works of dancers twirling and leaping and figures in bright colors, using paper which was more expedient and less labor intensive than paint. It follows with Jazz, a series of works for a project for publisher Teriade, and continues with larger works such as “The Thousand and One Nights,” which depicts the story of fictional Queen Scheherazade from the Arabian Nights, and his four “Blue Nude” studies of the female form….The MOMA show … also includes “The Swimming Pool,” which fills a room in the exhibit with cut-outs of ultramarine blue swimmers, divers and sea urchins. Inspired by a visit to a favorite pool in Cannes, Matisse made the expansive work pinned on white paper on walls lined with tan canvas in his dining room in Nice. Other highlights include “The Parakeet and the Mermaid,” a massive cut-out work covering an entire wall with bright blues, greens, reds and blues; and “Ivy in Flower,” a large maquette for a stained glass window.

When I heard about it, I knew I had to go. I love French art.  I spent my junior year of college in Nice, France where there is a large Matisse museum.

So I called my friend, Eileen, and we planned to a trip to NYC for during my holiday break from work.

As usual, we took to Megabus down.

IMG_4680

It was chilly but the sun was out (though the tall buildings blocked the sun but at least shielded us from the wind.) It was nice walking in a part of the city that I don’t often see. I love all the different kinds of buildings you get to see.

IMG_4738

From 7th & 28th, we walked to have lunch in a restaurant on 39th & Park Avenue

It was a change from the theater district where we normally have lunch.

IMG_4688

The food was wonderful.

IMG_4686

mac n cheese, pumpkin croquettes, butternut squash risotto, beef, stew – we shared them

After lunch, we walked to the Museum of Modern Art with a brief stop in Bryant Park and Rockefeller Center.

IMG_4694-0

We had Matisse tickets for 2:00 pm. The line was a mile long but luckily we didn’t have to wait since we had bought tickets ahead of time.

The Matisse exhibit was amazing. (Unfortunately you couldn’t take pictures.) It was unbelievably crowded. I was surprised at how any people were at this exhibit.

After the Matisse exhibit, I wanted to also see Monet’s waterlilies as well as Van Gogh’s Starry Starry Night.

IMG_4700-0

IMG_4706-0

I forgot how much I liked this museum. There was a whole floor of post-impressionists such as Cezanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh and modern painters such as Matisse, Chagall, Picasso, etc.

IMG_4699

I accidentally stumbled upon a whole floor on Toulouse-Lautrec’s posters of Paris.

IMG_4707

We could have stayed for hours but we wanted to get back outdoors and go to Rockefeller Center & Saks to catch the holiday lights that we missed on our last visit.

Before we left, we did visit the sculpture garden.

IMG_4716-0

wishing that I could go back to Paris

IMG_4710

Of course, it was crowded everywhere in the city especially at Saks. The windows were very creative and worth a view and it was getting dark so Rockefeller Center was lit up.

IMG_4718-1

IMG_4719-0

Then we headed to another bucket list item for me…a rooftop bar in NYC.

We fought the crowds on the sidewalks and walked to the Refinery Rooftop on 38th & 6th. We had an awesome view of the Empire State Building while having a drink and some appetizers.

IMG_4720

view from the inside

The best part was that I got to visit with a former student, fellow runner & blogger and NYC resident. She brought her friend and the four of us had a great time chatting. (I can’t believe that she graduated HS over 15 years ago.)

IMG_4722-2

From there, we walked to Penn Station to catch our train home…a long day…lots of walking…but

Happy Running! Anyone else share my love for NYC? And I still plan someday to race there!!

I Love New York!

It’s no secret.  I love New York.

I have been lucky to get down to the city several times this past year –January,  June, September &  in October twice (Oct 4 & Oct 25).

But, of course, I had to visit during the holiday season.

Last year, my friends, Mary Pat, Eileen & I did the typical tourist things.

nyc 12-413 (3)  nyc 12-413 (7) 20131205-102259.jpg  nyc 12-413 (13)

This year, our group grew and there were six of us.

We took the Megabus down. It was drizzly and cloudy but not that cold so we walked to the restaurant with a detour to Bryant Park.

IMG_4448-0

Then we had a nice lunch – I had a delicious soup, half a sandwich and a awesome pumpkin gelato for dessert.

IMG_4450-0

Then we went to a show. (It was raining and a perfect time to spend a few hours indoors.)

The show was very enjoyable.  Idina Menzel was awesome.  It was a little redundant and long but still very good.

IMG_4453

photo op at Times Square

After the show we walked around trying to see all the window displays –  Sak’s, Macy’s etc. before catching our train home. The rain had stopped and it was warmer than before the show,

But it was the night of the lighting of the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center and it was soooooo crowded so we skipped Saks and walked down 6th Ave on our way to Macys.

IMG_4457-0

IMG_4456

IMG_4455

We had dinner in Penn Station while we waited for our train home.  We all lamented about how fast the day went and how we can’t wait to come back to NYC.

It was a great day. (Almost as much fun as my day running in Central Park.)

Happy Running! What is a must-do during the holidays for you?
