This week, the theme is 5 things I like about my favorite city.

Yes, NYC is my favorite city and I am lucky to live a train or bus ride away.

Here are 5 things I love about NYC:

1.  Restaurants

I love to eat out. I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad meal in NYC.

2. Theater

There’s nothing like Broadway.  I usually go once a year. I have seen some great shows. Among my favorites are Les Miz, Kinky Boots, Jersey Boys, Wicked, Once, Billy Elliot, Lion King…

going to NYC to see "Once" on Broadway

3. Museums

I love French art especially the Impressionists. Outside of Paris, there’s no better place to see these paintings than the Metropolitan Museum (above) or the Modern Art Museum (below).

4. Parks and Gardens

Bryant Park

I love hanging out in Bryant Park especially at lunch time. I could spend the whole day in Central (and have.)

5. the Lights

Paris may be the “City of Lights,” but the lights of NYC are breath-taking especially around the holidays.

1.  It is cold. Not cold. Frigid. Like -20 with the wind chill.

1509293_10152396458377026_5265556860440395410_n

2.  I still have not mastered treadmill running. I run slow.  I can’t handle more than 3 miles.  I ran outside Monday night and survived.  I hope it warms up to 15 so I can run outside tomorrow night.

but this is really accurate:

3. I am excited and nervous about my upcoming half marathon,

I can’t wait to leave the cold weather?  But will it be warm in Florida?  Will my flight arrive without a delay? (I leave on Friday & my race is 6:30 am Saturday.)

How will I be on race day?  Will I have a good race?

and an extra #4 & #5

4. I am racing (if it warms up) on Sunday,  HMRRC Winter Series #3.  It will be a 10K and my last long training run. I ran this one 2 years ago. I had finished in 1:08:18 (which was a PR at the time.) Now my 10K PR is 57:03. I hope to finish around 60 min.

5. I went to a STEM celebration dinner last night. It was for the volunteers and runners in the Domestic Violence Survivors Group. The women were so proud that they ran a 5k (in the pouring cold rain).

I can’t wait to do participate in this program again.

Back to the Big Apple

A friend went to the Matisse exhibit at MoMa during Thanksgiving break.

“It is the most extensive exhibition of this period of Matisse’s work ever mounted,” … The exhibition follows Matisse as he begins with small works of dancers twirling and leaping and figures in bright colors, using paper which was more expedient and less labor intensive than paint. It follows with Jazz, a series of works for a project for publisher Teriade, and continues with larger works such as “The Thousand and One Nights,” which depicts the story of fictional Queen Scheherazade from the Arabian Nights, and his four “Blue Nude” studies of the female form….The MOMA show … also includes “The Swimming Pool,” which fills a room in the exhibit with cut-outs of ultramarine blue swimmers, divers and sea urchins. Inspired by a visit to a favorite pool in Cannes, Matisse made the expansive work pinned on white paper on walls lined with tan canvas in his dining room in Nice. Other highlights include “The Parakeet and the Mermaid,” a massive cut-out work covering an entire wall with bright blues, greens, reds and blues; and “Ivy in Flower,” a large maquette for a stained glass window.

When I heard about it, I knew I had to go. I love French art.  I spent my junior year of college in Nice, France where there is a large Matisse museum.

So I called my friend, Eileen, and we planned to a trip to NYC for during my holiday break from work.

As usual, we took to Megabus down.

IMG_4680

It was chilly but the sun was out (though the tall buildings blocked the sun but at least shielded us from the wind.) It was nice walking in a part of the city that I don’t often see. I love all the different kinds of buildings you get to see.

IMG_4738

From 7th & 28th, we walked to have lunch in a restaurant on 39th & Park Avenue

It was a change from the theater district where we normally have lunch.

IMG_4688

The food was wonderful.

IMG_4686

mac n cheese, pumpkin croquettes, butternut squash risotto, beef, stew – we shared them

After lunch, we walked to the Museum of Modern Art with a brief stop in Bryant Park and Rockefeller Center.

IMG_4694-0

We had Matisse tickets for 2:00 pm. The line was a mile long but luckily we didn’t have to wait since we had bought tickets ahead of time.

The Matisse exhibit was amazing. (Unfortunately you couldn’t take pictures.) It was unbelievably crowded. I was surprised at how any people were at this exhibit.

After the Matisse exhibit, I wanted to also see Monet’s waterlilies as well as Van Gogh’s Starry Starry Night.

IMG_4700-0

IMG_4706-0

I forgot how much I liked this museum. There was a whole floor of post-impressionists such as Cezanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh and modern painters such as Matisse, Chagall, Picasso, etc.

IMG_4699

I accidentally stumbled upon a whole floor on Toulouse-Lautrec’s posters of Paris.

IMG_4707

We could have stayed for hours but we wanted to get back outdoors and go to Rockefeller Center & Saks to catch the holiday lights that we missed on our last visit.

Before we left, we did visit the sculpture garden.

IMG_4716-0

wishing that I could go back to Paris

IMG_4710

Of course, it was crowded everywhere in the city especially at Saks. The windows were very creative and worth a view and it was getting dark so Rockefeller Center was lit up.

IMG_4718-1

IMG_4719-0

Then we headed to another bucket list item for me…a rooftop bar in NYC.

We fought the crowds on the sidewalks and walked to the Refinery Rooftop on 38th & 6th. We had an awesome view of the Empire State Building while having a drink and some appetizers.

IMG_4720

view from the inside

The best part was that I got to visit with a former student, fellow runner & blogger and NYC resident. She brought her friend and the four of us had a great time chatting. (I can’t believe that she graduated HS over 15 years ago.)

IMG_4722-2

From there, we walked to Penn Station to catch our train home…a long day…lots of walking…but

Happy Running! Anyone else share my love for NYC? And I still plan someday to race there!!

Two crossed off the Bucket List

Back in March, I created a Racing Bucket List of 13 items.  I had done 7 out of 13 at the time. Since then…

#13 – Run a popular race – I ran the Love Run half marathon which had almost 10,000 runners.

and I just signed up for this Half Marathon in Florida!!!

Jan 17, 2015

#8 – Running along the ocean

Yes, I finally decided on a race to keep myself motivated to run through the cold weather.

I chose this race because you run along the ocean and because I have 5 friends who spend the winter in this area.

#10 – Running in Central Park, NYC...

Ok, it was not a race but I do plan to do that someday…I would love to do the NYC Half (but it is a lottery) or the NYC Mini 10K.

Yesterday, I had the day off.  My NYC travel friends & I had planned to take the MegaBus to NYC.  However, one friend was busy and the other was away on vacation.

Since the weather was predicted to be beautiful, I had decided to go it alone.

Of course, my plan was to RUN IN CENTRAL PARK!!!

Then at the last minute, one of my friends, Eileen, was able to go.  I hate to say this but I was disappointed.

I told her that I wanted to run in the park and she said that it was ok with her.

Then I said that I wanted to run for an hour and then meet her.  She said “I didn’t know you were going to run for a whole hour!”

Actually I wanted to run for more than an hour.  The weather was absolutely perfect…sunny and warm but not too hot and no humidity. But it was obvious that I would need to compromise.

So we took a subway to the 86th street entrance of Central Park which was near the  Jackie Onassis Reservoir.  There is a running track that goes around the reservoir.

IMG_3790

I told Eileen to walk around the track once and I would run around twice and then we would spend the rest of the day walking and visiting the sites in the park together.

The run was awesome.  I loved every minute of it.

IMG_3795

I took my time the first lap and veered off the track several times.

IMG_3800

The 2nd time around, I ran without stopping because I felt guilty making Eileen wait.

I definitely plan to come back here (alone or with another runner) to run sometime in the future.

(More about this wonderful day in the park in a later post.)

Happy Running! What places are on your running bucket list? Have you ever run in Central Park?

Tuesdays on the Run: Fitting in running on vacation

Erika @ MCM Mama Runs hosts Tuesdays on the Run with April @ Run the great wide somewhere and Patty @ My no-guilt life

This week’s topic is: Fitting in Running on Vacation

I ALWAYS make sure I run when I am on vacation.  It’s kinda a priority for me.  I would have fun if I didn’t run but running makes it an even better vacation for me.

In this post I’ll talk about my last vacation – my annual TENNIS vacation in Naples Florida.

The schedule was that every morning we play doubles for 1.5 hours and then have a tennis lesson for 1.5 hours.

20140522-124142-45702225.jpg

our group with our instructor

Did I run?

Yes! I made it a priority to do so.

In order to run, I would skip part of the doubles play and run.  After my run, I would change my clothes and join them to play. After playing we would have our lesson.

After the first 2 days, I realized that it was faster to run in my tennis clothes and have someone bring my racket & shoes to the court.

Often?

Yes! 5 times.

  • Thursday before tennis that got rained out – 3 miles halted by rain in the middle
  • Friday before tennis – 3 miles again
  • Saturday before tennis – 3 miles barely
  • Monday before tennis – 2.5 miles
  • Tuesday before tennis – 2 miles

I did not run Sunday since we were going to Longboat Key to visit friends and play tennis. I did not run on Wednesday since we moved our tennis lesson to an earlier time.

Were they good runs?

Nope.  None were.

It was very humid on the first few runs and of course, much warmer than I was used to.  Then it got even warmer.  It was tough to breathe and run.  My running got to be walking/running and slower and slower.

I also found for the first time that I was missing tennis.  Everyone else was playing tennis. I wanted to be with them And I wanted to be warmed up before our lesson.

So my runs got shorter.

Did I enjoy them?

Yes. Immensely.

I loved the scenery – the trees, flowers, etc.  I loved the sunshine and even the heat.

During each run I took a different route. I ran around the neighborhoods of World Tennis Center (WTC).  I ran around the pool area and tennis courts.  I ran outside the WTC along the main road in one direction and then another day in the other direction.

What will I do differently next year?

I could get up earlier.  But it’s hard when you go out to dinner late and you are hanging out with friends after that.

I could  run every other day. But you never know in Florida when it will rain. You have to take advantage of the beautiful weather.

I could  just play tennis but I would have been upset with myself for NOT running.

I could run after tennis but I know I would have been too tired and would be making others wait for me to go to the beach.

So next year, I will probably do nothing different from this year.

Suggestions for running on vacation:

  • Be prepared.  Bring clothes for all weather conditions.
  • Schedule your runs. If you leave it to chance, it won’t happen.
  • Be flexible.  Sometimes other persons’ needs or desires will come before your running.
  • Find a scenic route.  Pretty views make all the difference.
  • Lower your expectations. Distance & speed goals will probably not happen.
  • Register for a race in the area, if possible. Then you will definitely run.
  • Have fun.

Happy Running! How do you fit in your running on vacation?

Five Friday: The 4th of July

Every Friday, three DC area bloggers Mary at Mar On the Run, Cynthia at You Signed Up For What?! and Courtney from Eat Pray Run, DC to host the Friday Five linkup.  Anyone can join with their own Friday Five post (yes, it must be a Friday Five!!)  They encourage you to visit other blogs on the linkup, comment, share and engage!

This week, the theme is Five Things About July 4th:

1. Time Off – you never have to work on July 4th.  Yay!

DSC02349

hope to be doing a lot of this (with a drink & a book in each hand)

2. Red, White and Blue. Lots of flags and patriotic clothing.

3. Picnics & BBQs. A time to pig out with friends.

4. Boating & Swimming.  Rain or shine we go out on our boat.

5. Fireworks.  Love them! We get to watch them at our marina.

Yes, there are races that I would LOVE to run but you can’t do everything.

this crowded race is in Saratoga…someday…maybe?

Happy Running! How do you spend July 4th!

A day off to explore a new running route

I took Monday off in case I was too sore after Sunday’s 10 mile race.

I was not.  I felt great.

I decided to use the time to run somewhere new.

I never can.  Either no time before work, too much traffic after work, boating or a long run to do on the weekend.

So today was the day and the weather was similar to the weekend’s – PERFECT!

I drove to Peebles Island. I heard there was a park there with trails.

When I got there, I got sidetracked.

In addition to lighthouses, I love bridges.

So I kept running over them.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Then I finally arrived back at the park to run the trails.  There were two loops – an inner and an outer.  I wasn’t sure which one to do and I was kinda nervous to be running by myself.

I decided to do the outer one but I think I may have made a wrong turn.  Anyway it was beautiful & I saw some baby deer.

Luckily I bumped into a couple and asked them.  They told me to do the outer loop because you get to see the falls.

Score.  Love waterfalls even more than bridges.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I continued to run (and stop for photos).  It was was beautiful – water views all along the trail and hills to climb for better views.  Also tables for picnicking.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

An almost perfect day.  I was getting too cocky about trail running and down I went.

Nothing broken – just bruises and a bloody arm.

20140623-142411-51851519.jpg

Luckily I was near the end.  3.8 miles done – (I would have done 4 miles if it weren’t for the fall.)

So I won’t be signing up for a trail race anytime soon.

Happy Running! Do you run on new routes often?  Do you do trail races?

Rest day on the island

The island I am talking about is “Staten Island.”

It’s no secret that I love New York City.

So I decided to take the day off from work & take the MegaBus to the city with my friends Eileen, Mary Pat & their sister Susan.

Eileen & I had visited Staten Island last year during the winter and wanted to visit again in the warmer weather.  MaryPat & Susan had never been.

The day started out pretty grey but we kept our fingers crossed that it would not rain.

So we hopped the subway (I am getting to be a pro at this) to the ferry.

20140620-141619-51379135.jpg

When we arrived in Staten Island, we decided to buy sandwiches to eat at the gardens. Then we took the bus to Snug Harbor (this time I knew to use your metro card rather than quarters.)

We ate in the park in front of a fountain and then walked around the botanical gardens.

20140620-142511-51911792.jpg

I have been to several other botanical gardens – NY, Montreal so maybe I am spoiled but these were not that impressive – needed a lot of weeding.

20140620-142510-51910866.jpg

Next we wandered around the Chinese Scholar garden (that I had been to previously.) That was lovely.

At this point, it started to rain lightly. So we got back on the bus to the ferry and took another bus in the opposite direction. I wanted to visit the Alice Austin cottage. The rain stopped by the time we got there.

20140620-140705-50825090.jpg

Alice Austin was a very prolific and talented woman photographer.

We looked at her prints & watched a video on her life…an amazing lady.

Soon it was time to catch the bus boat to the ferry and head back to Manhattan.

20140620-145023-53423118.jpg

The best value in NYC – free ferry ride.

20140620-145336-53616647.jpg

When we arrived back on land, the sky had cleared and the sun came out.  Unfortunately it was too late to do much but have dinner.

DSC00304

one of my favorite buildings (Flatiron) – restuarant is on the right

So we hopped the subway and then walked to Eataly. (Someone recommended checking this out.)

Wow. It was overwhelming – lots of indoor shops selling Italian foods and ingredients as well as restaurants specializing in different kinds of Italian foods. We choose the pizza and pasta restaurant. And it was delicious.

Afterwards, I really really wanted to buy some Italian pastries but the lines were too long.

We walked back to Penn Station and arrived just in time to catch our train.

A long day but not long enough.

I always leave the NYC wanting more and planning my next trip.
