December Recap

10 Things We Love The Most About December

Where has the time gone?.  I can’t believe that it is almost 2017. Wasn’t it just December 1?.

Anyway, here’s how December went down:

Weekday Runs:

We’ve been lucky and it’s hasn’t been cold or snowy of a December. So I was able to run at least 3 times outdoors each week which is great because I do not have a treadmill at home.

I ran mostly at UAlbany (near work). It’s easier than driving to run. Plus, it’s now dark when I get out of work.

I ran mostly alone.  Barbara was injured.  Alyssa was busy and I was in Florida for 5 days.

It’s definitely more fun running with friends. I hope I get to do that more next month.

Long Runs:

There were none! Just a half marathon!! Taking a break until mid-January.

Total Mileage:

I ran 69 miles this month –  My lowest monthly total of the year.  But I did run over 1000 miles for the year!! Woo Hoo! For the first time ever.

img_3429

Started out the year with my highest monthly total and ended with the lowest. LOL

2016

Races:

I only ran two races this month – a half marathon and a 5k.

I was generally happy with how they buth went. I won my age group in the half marathon and the 5k was just pure fun.

Cross Training:

I still play tennis (indoors now.) I am scheduled to play two Tuesdays a month but do get called to sub on some of the other weeks.

I actually went to workout at the gym ONCE!! Just I know – shocker!

I did walk almost every day at lunch for 30 minutes – Either around the outdoor shopping mall or to get a Starbucks coffee

Other News:

I went on the most awesome Girls Weekend Race-cation.  #HoLottaFun

I also spend a day in NYC taking in all the holiday sights.

I spent time with Amanda (my mentee).

There was a lot of holiday partying and eating but I won’t get into that.

Feeling healthy so Life Is Good.

Looking Ahead:

My next half marathon is not until March 5 in Florida where I will be visiting a few friends.

I only have a few races coming up. Things slow down around here when it gets cold.

This is my list so far for the next 2 months:

  • 01-01-17 – HMRRC Winter Series #2 – 3.5M
  • 01-15-17 – HMRRC Winter Series #3  – 10K
  • 01-29-17 –  HMRRC Winter Series #4  – 15K
  • 02-05-17 – HMRRC Winter Series #5  – 10M

All these races are FREE!!

No monthly goals.

This motto worked for 2016 so I’m sticking with it in 2017!

Happy Running! How did your December turn out? Anything exciting planned for January?

Friday Five 2.0: Holiday Races

I am linking up with Running on Happy & Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday Five 2.0 linkup!
Join in! Don’t forget to link back to your hostesses and visit some other bloggers.

Today’s Topic is: Holiday Races

I run the same Holiday race (Albany Last Run) every year so I’ll change this post’s topic to December Races I’ve run or would like to run:

1. Albany Last Run

Mid-December every year in Albany, NY.  The race starts off with fireworks at the Capitol building and then you run around the lights in Washington Park ending with a downhill near where you began.  Lots of costumes and holiday spirit.  This is the race that I run every year.

2. EAU Palm Beach  Half Marathon

Beginning of December in West Palm Beach, Fl.  I ran it in 2015 and enjoyed the course and ocean views. I’d love to do it again.

I especially liked the champagne that you receive after you cross the finish line.

3. Panama City Beach Half Marathon

Beginning of December in Panama City Beach, Fl.  I ran it this year and enjoyed the FLAT course and gulf views. If I got invited again, this one would be one to repeat.

Free gumbo and beer at Margaritaville after the race is a nice perk.

4. Hot Chocolate Run

5k in Northampton, MA. It raises money for an organization addressing domestic violence.  I’ve never run this race but I know a few runners who have and they say good things about it.

Of course, there’s hot chocolate after the race.

5. First Night Saratoga 5k

New Year’s Eve in Saratoga Springs, NY. Again I have not run this race but it is very popular locally. It starts and ends on the Skidmore campus and is moderately hilly. You receive a commemorative medal at the finish.

Afterwards you can attend the annual First Night activities in beautiful downtown Saratoga.

Here’s just a few:

I’ve enjoyed a great 2016 and feel so fortunate to have had zero injuries and to have been able to race often and with so many wonderful runners.

Happy Running! What is your favorite memory of 2016?

Panama City Beach Half Marathon Recap on TOLT

Half Marathon December 3, 2016

Half Marathon Training

I’ve never been so relaxed and excited for a half marathon. Relaxed because my last one was a PR and excited because it would be part of a Girls Weekend with seven other awesome runners/bloggers.

That being said, there was not much serious training going on.

These three runs would have do as my long runs. I ran my usual 3-4 miles several times during the week.

Pre-Race Preparations

Holly has run this race before and she recommended it so I trusted her.

The race emails also made the race seem so fun:

Come run on the World’s Most Beautiful Beaches.

What other race has an after party at Jimmy Buffer’s Margaritaville where you’ll receive free beer and gumbo?

All runners will receive a long -sleeve t-shirt and swag bag.

img_3223

I had decided to wear what I wore at my previous Florida half marathons (tank and skirt) with a possible throwaway and DIY arm warmers.

Holly graciously offered to let us stay in her cute little house on the water in Panama City Beach.

view from Holly’s house

Once everyone arrived on Friday, we took an obligatory sunset group pic and then we took off to Dave & Busters to pick up our race shirt and bib.  It was super easy and took no time at all.  Next we headed to a nearby restaurant to carb load for next day.  We choose a pizza place and I was in heaven.  (I even had gelato for dessert.)

Then we drove back to Holly’s and headed right to bed because we had a half marathon the next morning.

NOT!

We stayed up and chatted and chatted… So much fun getting to know each other.  Although we had been reading each other blogs for years, I was surprised to find out all the things we had in common and how supportive, friendly, warm and fun-loving they all were. I knew already that this was going be a great weekend.

Thanks to Wendy for our Momentum bracelets

and to Holly for the fuzzy socks!!

Race Day

The race was scheduled to start at 7:30 am. So we got up around 5:30 am.  I had my usual oatmeal/tea breakfast that I had brought from home.

Everyone was so excited for the race. Coach Marcia led us in some stretching and then off we went.

This was my 7th Florida half marathon.  The weather has been warm, cold, windy, or humid.  For this race:, it was cool (50s) but not too cool, a little breezy, with no humidity, and it was overcast. It couldn’t have been more perfect.  No need for throw-away clothes for the first time in a while.

me and Holly modeling our Skirt Sports skirts

Holly lived only a few minutes away from the race start.  How great was that? And there was lots of parking and real restrooms.

Before we knew it, it was time to snap a quick pic (There was lot of picture taking on this trip.) and squeeze in among the other runners and start the race.

panama-city-beach-half-marathon-route

As you can see from the map above, the route is out and back right along the beach. It is also FLAT! Woo Hoo!

The race is a blur as usual but here’s how I remember it:

Miles 1-4:

9:40, 9:46, 9:53, 9:47

Wendy started out front.  Holly, Karen & I started out together.  Tricia & Mary Beth were a little behind us. Judy and Marcia were behind them somewhere.

I was feeling very strong at the beginning.  Holly dropped back for a while so Karen & I ran together. Eventually Karen started to slow and run at her own pace. Holly, who is much faster, sped on ahead too.

I did not try to keep up with Holly but I enjoyed watching her up ahead. I focused on running at a good yet even pace.  And surprisingly, the hotels did not block the water view as much as I had feared.  I always enjoy the salt water smells and views of the gulf when I run. So this race did not disappoint here.

It seemed breezy during the first few miles and of course, we were running into the wind. Did that mean that the wind would be at our backs for our last tired miles? (Nope. Didn’t happen.)

The course also had water & Gatorade stops at EVERY mile.  It was not warm so I did skip the first one but after that, I thought it best to stop and I used them as a walk breaks.

Miles 5-8:

10:07, 9:47, 10:01, 10:27

Unfortunately, my usual foot pain did rear its ugly head.  I had mole skin on the bottom of the foot but it seemed to have moved and the rest of race, it felt like I had a ball under my foot. UGH! It was not debilitating pain just annoying.

What I enjoyed about this race was that it was an out and back.  That meant that I was able to cheer on and high five all my friends when they passed me by or when I passed them by.

I saw everyone except Marcia and was very happy to see how well they were running.

As for me, my first half time was great.  I knew if I could keep it up, I would PR!  Perfect weather & a flat course…why not?

Spoiler alert – it did not happen 😦

Miles 9-12:

10:19, 10:18, 10:23, 10:17

Did I go out too fast?  Did I not have enough long runs during my training?  Did my achy foot slow me down?

Who knows? But after 7 miles, things started going south.

I started slowing down.  I could not keep my pace under 10. My lower back started bothering me.  Still I was enjoying the race.

But doing the math, I realized that I could no longer PR.  So I just ran and walked when I was tired. Why kill myself??

Mile 13-14:

9:52, 8:28

pcb1

After I crossed under the Pier Park arch, I saw my friends cheering me on, I tried to speed up and drag my tired legs through the finish line.

I crossed at 2:11:xx.

Right after me, Karen finished and soon after that came Tricia and Mary Beth.  They had all run so well. In fact, Tricia and Mary Beth had PRs.  (Congrats to their coaches, too!)

pcb

Mary Beth & I made the newspaper!!

Wendy & Holly had finished earlier with amazing times.  We all walked over to the computer to print our results.

Believe it or not, my chip was defective and it did not record me running the race. UGH!!!

It worked out fine, though.  They were very nice and manually added my Garmin time into the computer.

Garmin Time: 2:11:18

Phew!

So we walked back to the course so we could see Judy finish.  And she ran a great race and finished with a big PR.

Now it was time to head to Maragaritaville to get our free beer and gumbo.

They were also giving out awards there.

And guess what?  I won FIRST in my old lady age group.  Age Groups Rock!

Post Race:

Of course, we were starving after running 13.1 miles so we had lunch at a nearby restaurant.  The restaurant was conveniently located so we could watch and cheer on the marathoners who were still out on the course.

We were all on a race high for the rest of the day.

the water was chilly but it felt good after running 13.1 miles!

yes, we did this on ONE take!

After numerous photo shoots on the beach, we took off our medals and resumed our celebrating at a karaoke oyster bar.

Additional race reflections:

The Good:

  • Organized packet pick-up.
  • Lots of parking at the start and close by to where we were staying
  • Real bathrooms before the race.
  • Running a race with 7 friends.
  • Flat course with water views.
  • Lots of water stops (every mile)
  • No major injuries (just the usual foot & back issues)
  • Free beer and gumbo (or chili) after the race.
  • Perfect weather conditions.

The Bad:

  • Water stop at mile 8 ran out of water.
  • Margaritaville ran out of gumbo and there were runners who ran 26.2 who had to settle for chili.
  • I didn’t push hard after I realized that I couldn’t PR.

The Ugly:

  • Nothing really.

Would I recommend this race?

Yes, definitely.

I have run more scenic courses with better swag. I have had better finish times. But what made this race so special was sharing the experience with these 7 amazing women – cheering them on, celebrating their success and feeling their unconditional support.

Final Stats:

Next Up:

A few 5ks , a 10k, a 15k, a 10 miler and then another half marathon in Florida on March 5, 2017.

And since it is Thursday, I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

Monday Running Update

ru

Last Week:

  • Monday – I used to run in Washington Park after work all the time.  But now that I changed jobs, I usually don’t feel like driving there and UAlbany is much closer. Tonight I decided to run there because I wanted to see the holiday light displays.

  • Tuesday – Just a Rest day. I took a wet walk at lunch and I didn’t even play tennis.  I did some errands and finished packing for my trip.
  • Wednesday – Due to the rainy forecast, I had planned to get up early to run but it was just too dark and foggy…  So another rest day with no burning off calories consumed at my monthly dinner out with my tennis friends.

  • Thursday – Not ideal but I felt I had to get some miles in so I squeezed in a short one before my flight.

Judy & I flew (via Atlanta) to Panama City Beach, FL. No travel issues and Holly was nice enough to pick us up at the airport and drive us to her house where we would be staying for the next 5 days.

  • Friday – Rest day but a busy day with bib pickup, carb loading and hanging out with 7 other awesome bloggers.

  • Saturday – We ran the Panama City Beach Half Marathon.  We all finished – there wer sone PRs and I even won my age group.  We all had a blast. Then we celebrated, of course.

  • Sunday – We started the day with a walk to get donuts followed by a short slow recovery run with a view of the ocean.

that’s WALK not work

20 miles done with 4 runs and 3 rest days.

This Week:

  • Monday – 6 mile run in Fl, fly home
  • Tuesday – Rest day, tennis
  • Wednesday – 4 mile run
  • Thursday – 4 mile run
  • Friday – Rest day, holiday party at work, mah jongg chez moi
  • Saturday – 5k race (in the evening)
  • Sunday – Rest day, day trip to NYC (an annual holiday tradition)
Once again, I am linking up for the Weekly Wrap hosted by these wonderful bloggers Holly @ HoHoRuns and Tricia @ MissSippiPiddlin. See rules here.

Ultimate Coffee Date – December

Confessions of a Mother Runner

Since today is the first Saturday in December, I am joining up with Coco & Deborah for their ultimate coffee date.

Over coffee or tea…

I’d tell you that when they first told me that I was spending two 5 day stints in Manhattan for work, I was bummed.  I would miss my training group runs, my running partners, my tennis games, etc. And I would be stuck indoors from 8 am – 4 pm every day.

But now I am bummed that they won’t be sending me back to NYC.  In the future, I will taking day trips to places in Upstate New York – not scenic and only for one night. No fun!

  • I loved the view from my hotel room.
  • I walked everywhere. Never had to drive or take public transportation.

I walked to work and back – at least one mile each way.  I took a walk during lunch.  In the evenings, I walked all around the city including Bryant Park, Rockefeller Center and Times Square.

  • I squeezed in a run whenever I could.

I ran after work, before work and even during lunch.

  • I got to do some cool things in my free time.

I took a ride on the Sea Glass Carousel at Battery Park, saw a Broadway show both weeks and ate some great NYC food (Greek, pizza, bagels & lox, crepes, and more.)

Over coffee and tea…

I’d tell you that I am Star Obsessed.  That’s collecting stars from Starbucks so I can get free coffee. Except that it’s not really free because I have to spend money to earn stars.  But there are always perks to earn extra stars and I’m on it!

Over coffee and tea…

I’d tell you that I usually enjoy decorating for the holidays.  I celebrate both Chanukah and Christmas but most of my decorations are non-denominational -Snowmen everywhere.

pic from last year

This year, I just don’t feel holly jolly.  (The election results, perhaps?)

Anyway, my house has no decorations yet.  The only thing I’ve done is buy a few gifts and make my photo holiday cards.

Over coffee and tea…

I’d tell you that I am in Florida right now.  I am about to run my 23rd Half Marathon in Panama City Beach. I don’t know how the race will turn out but spending the weekend with fellow bloggers Holly, Tricia, Wendy, Marcia, Mary Beth, Karen and Judy promises to be a blast!

Happy Running!  Got anything to spill?

Join in! Don’t forget to link back to your hostesses and visit some other bloggers.

I have traveled to California and Vermont to run a half marathon with one friend.  I have also spent a weekend in Philly with 4 other women to run a half marathon and it was so much fun.

Spoiler Alert: I am currently in Panama City Beach with 7 other awesome women and tomorrow we will be running a half marathon together!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My topic for today is Five Reasons to Take a Girls Weekend Race-cation.

1. Training Support

20140126-124043.jpg

Heidi, Adrienne & 1 training together for March 2014 race weekend in Philly

When you are training for the same race, you get support for your runs and race goals either in person or virtually.

sharing some miles with Judy

In addition to local blogger Judy, I have connected with and supported my other partners in crime for this weekend’s race through blogging, Instagram and FB.

2.  Cost Savings

20140331-090837.jpg

Lisa & Andrea – my roommates whom I had never met before the weekend in Philly

It is definitely cheaper to share a room with friends than staying in a hotel solo or with your hubby.

This time, Holly has graciously offered her home to 7 running bloggers – most of whom she has never met in person. Thank you Holly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3.  Visiting New Places

20140331-090818.jpg

even in the rain, we visited all the sites of Philly

I love to travel and explore new cities.  I have never been to Panama City Beach or this part of Florida.  I am especially looking forward to beach views and sunsets.

4. Sharing Your Racing Experience With Others

the Philly group – Andrea, Adrienne, Lisa, Heidi, me (& Heidi’s hubby)

I have raced most of my half marathons alone.  I have enjoyed each one but not nearly as much as the one in Philly (in spite of the rain). We went to the expo together, carb loaded the night before, lined up at the start and met after the race to debrief.

I am sure the same will be true this weekend and I expect it to be totally awesome!!

5. Forging New Friendships

andrea

Andrea & I at VCM relay

The Philly group has kept in touch on Facebook.  I have bumped into Andrea at several races.  We had planned another race-cation with Lisa but ZOOMA Cape Cod got cancelled.  We still hope that another will happen in the future.

I can’t wait to share everything that happens with my NEW FRIENDS this weekend in Panama City Beach!!!

( Maybe not everything – What happens in Panama City Beach stays in Panama City Beach, right?)

Happy Running! Have you ever taken a Girls Weekend Race-cation?

TOTR: Race Rewind

Since today is Tuesday, I’m linking up with these wonderful ladies:

Erika @ MCM Mama Runs, Marcia @ Marcia’s Healthy Slice and Patty @ My no-guilt life for

Today’s Topic is: Race Rewind. What race do you want a do-over on? Either to train/race differently or to relive the awesome.

My half marathons are the most memorable so I’ll talk about them.

I have THREE races that I would love to Relive the Awesome.

  • Naples Half Marathon

It was my first.  The course was gorgeous and it took place in my favorite city in Florida.  I couldn’t enjoy as much I’d like because I was worried that I wouldn’t finish.  (I hadn’t run any race longer than a 5k at that point.) Plus the time limit was 2:45 and I wanted to be sure to get that medal. I would love to run it again.

  • West Palm Half Marathon

Another beautiful course exactly 4 years after my first and almost 20 minutes faster.  It was my PR until recently. I enjoyed every minute of the race.

  • Ramblefest Half Marathon

This was my most recent half marathon and my current PR.  I loved this course and I would love to re-run it in nicer weather. It was cold and rainy.  Still the foliage and views were awesome.

There are also FIVE Do-Overs where I would like the chance to run them better:

  • Santa Clarita Half Marathon.

I was hoping that this would be a PR.  I trained well. But maybe over-trained? And I flew all the way to California to run it with my friend’s sister.  It rained for 6 miles and then I gave up on it when I realized that I wouldn’t have the time I wanted. I was very disappointed in myself after that race.

  • EAU Palm Beach Half Marathon

Another one where I expected to have a good finish time.  After all, it was a similar course to the West Palm race.  Except that I finished 20 minutes slower. Yup, I’d like a redo.

  • Asbury Park Half Marathon

Running along the Atlantic Ocean.  What could be better?  Except that my feet hurt the WHOLE race.  It was hard to enjoy the views amid the pain.  Do over, please!

  • Love Run

This was my first race-cation with friends.  I was so looking forward to this weekend.  But it rained ALL weekend.  Not just rained but poured…a MONSOON…record rainfall during the race.  I have never seen such mud!!  Philadelphia is a beautiful city.  I want to run this race again and see the sites we ran past.

  • Adirondack Half Marathon

Another race where I signed up with friends.  But I had a strained Achilles over the summer and was unable to train for this fall race.  With my longest run only being 6 miles, I decided to do the race, run the first 7 miles but walk the last 6 miles.  I finished with at 2:45 – my slowest half marathon time. I would love to run it again healthy.

I have run 22 half marathons.  I have not repeated any and I don’t plan to but if I did, the ones mentioned in this post I’d love to run again.

Happy Running! Which races would you like a do-over?

TOLT: Runner’s High and What’s Next

thinking out loudSince it is Thursday,  I’m linking up today with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

Here’s what I’m thinking about today:

Runner’s High

I don’t get it while I’m running. Running always seems hard.

But when you get a PR when you didn’t expect it and probably didn’t deserve it, that is a Runner’s High!!

Why did it happen?

  1. I was thrilled with my last half finish time and wasn’t stressed about having a good race. In other words, I was very relaxed!!
  2. The course was flat. This is a biggie.
  3. The temps were cool. This helped too however, it was humid.
  4. It was raining and I wanted to be done. But it was never raining that hard to get soaked.

How could I have done even better?

  1. Walk less. Yep, I walked 7 times and twice for a rather long time. (Can you drink, eat Gu & run at the same time?)
  2. Push harder.  I was never out of breath.  I was able to chat with other runners.  My legs never felt tired.
  3. Warm up before. It was cold and damp.  My ankle was stiff and painful for the first half of the race.  Taking Tylenol would have helped.  Sitting in my warm car until the race started probably didn’t help.
  4. Follow a training plan.  I never increased my mileage during the week. Just 3-4 miles of easy runs (except for one group speed drill. I did most of long runs as add-ons to my 5k races)

If you read my blog, you know that I was doubtful that I would ever run a half marathon PR again.  I wondered if my January 2015 finish time was just a fluke.

Now I think, I that I am capable of running an even faster 13.1 miles.

It may never happen because as we know there are so many factors involved… but until then I am basking in my PR glory.

img_2311

What’s Next?

Another half marathon in 7 weeks!!!

I think it’s flat but it could be warm and humid. It could be windy & cool. Time will tell…

I’d be lying if I said that I am going to train differently for this race.

Hey, look at this racing schedule (in red is the long run distance that I should complete):

  • 10-15-16 – Great Pumpkin Challenge 10K (7 m – 6.2 is close enough)
  • 10-22-16 – L.L. Bean Bright Night 5K (8 m not happening)
  • 10-29-16 – Monster Scramble 10K  (possibly but not registered yet) (9 m)
  • 11-05-16 – NYRR Dash to the Finish Line 5K in NYC (10 m not happening)
  • 11-11-16 – Veteran’s Dash 5k
  • 11-13-16 – Stockade-athon 15K (11 m – 9.3 is close, right?)
  • 11-19-16 – Girls on the Run 5k (volunteering with STEM) (12 m)
  • 11-24-16 – Troy Turkey Trot 10k and 5k (10 m – 9.3 is close)

I, of course, want to run a good race on December 3.  But my goal is to run well enough and have a fun vacation with some super women!!

Margaritaville, here I come…

Half Marathon Training

I’ve never run two half marathons so close together.

I ran the Saratoga Palio three weeks ago. So did I really need to train?

Maybe not…

So I just added some extra miles to the two 5k races that I ran on the weekends that proceeded the race.

These two runs would have do as my long runs.  I ran my usual 3-4 miles several times during the week.

Pre-Race Preparations

This is a first annual race so I knew nothing about the course or the race.

This is what the website had to say:

Organized by the Berkshire Running Center, the first annual RambleFest Half Marathon will be held along the beautiful Ashuwillticook Trail from Berkshire Mall in Lanesborough, to the Visitors Center in Adams.

Not much help.

So I reached out to FB friends who ran the Steel Rail Half Marathon last May.  The Steel Rail is supposed to have the same course. Here’s what they said:

  • I loved it. Nice flat, downhill course.
  • The course is great!
  • Loved the course! It’s fast!

I found some more info by searching online for reviews of the Steel Rail half.  Here’s one:

The course is wonderful. It runs point-to-point from Lanesborough to Adams. It starts with two loops around the Berkshire Mall (both of which seem downhill all the way; I haven’t figured that out yet), then goes onto the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail for ten miles. The scenery is lovely. If you’re not trying to hold pace by fixating on the feet of the guy in front of you like I was, you can enjoy views of Mt. Greylock, lakes, and woods. And by the time you’re really hurting at mile ten, the trail starts gently sloping downhill, for real. If you want a half marathon PR, this is the course

Amenities included easy parking, plenty of porta-potties, a post-race massage tent, food, and beer. The tech race shirt was nice and offered women’s sizing. Prizes ran deep; Kent gave out generous checks for the top three overall winners and the top three masters, plus merchandise from his running store, Berkshire Running Center in downtown Pittsfield, for the top three age group winners… After the ceremony, buses delivered participants back to the start. I’d highly recommend this race…

You also get a hoodie if you run both races.  (Next year!?)

I had not been particularly excited about this race but after reading this review, I was looking forward to it.

I had decided to wear what I wore at a previous 10k race but then changed my mind and wore my Brooklyn Half shirt (from exactly a year ago) with a throwaway and DIY arm warmers.

The weather was predicted to be cool and breezy with a chance of rain.

adams

don’t believe that 20% & 5% chance of rain – should have been 100%

Rain is not my favorite weather to run in.  It also ruins both the pre and post race activities. And humidity is the worst.  But you can’t control the weather.

one of the 3 half marathons that I have run in the rain.

Although Saturday was my catch up day with doing stuff around the house, since I would be off on Monday, I decided to take a ride to Pittsfield, MA to pickup my bib. Race packet pick up was at a running store so in addition to getting my race shirt & bib, I bought a pair of socks. We got two plastic strips to hang off our hips for the timing.  Interesting.  After I left the store, I stopped and had a nice lunch in town.

long sleeved tech shirt

Probably not the best idea in the world but that night, the night before the race, I invited a co-worker to go see the speaker at my college Reunion Weekend.

We also had dinner together beforehand.  Pizza, of course!

It was a really good show but it didn’t end until after 10 pm. Needless to say, I didn’t get enough sleep before my big race.

Race Day

The race was scheduled to start at 9:30 am. I was happy about the late start.

According to Google, it should have taken about 1h 15 to get there.  So I got up about 6 am and left my house at 7:15 am because I wasn’t exactly sure where I was going.

My GPS took me on the back roads and it was a really gorgeous ride.  Unfortunately, it rained on and off during my ride which made me nervous.  I didn’t want to run another half marathon in the rain.

I got there plenty early. The race started in the parking lot of the Berkshire Shopping Mall.  Easy to get to and lots of parking.

Since the race ended in Adams, MA, they gave you a bag to check stuff which would be available at the finish line.  Very convenient. I packed flip flops, sweat pants and a jacket in it.

I did some knitting while I was waiting.  It was too cold to wait outside my car….around 50 and windy and damp. Brrrr!

Soon Alyssa arrived and we shivered together until it was time to line up to start the race.

A lot of the race is a blur but here’s how I remember it:

Miles 1-4:

9:15, 9:29, 9:16, 10:07

Alyssa and I decided to run together.  I had never run a race with someone else but I was willing to try. I thought that it would be fun to have someone to chat with to pass the time and make the miles less painful.

The starting line was in the parking lot.  I wasn’t sure if there were chip timing or gun timing (Still not.) We didn’t start as close to the front as I usually do, though.

For the first two miles, you ran around the parking lot.  I had decided to ditch my cotton shirt but left on my DIY warm warmers.  And it was windy and I was freezing!!!

We realized pretty quickly that we were running too fast but decided to keep it up as long as we could.

After mile 2, we left the parking lot and entered the trail.  The trail was less windy and I wasn’t as cold.

I was running at a decent pace and was in the zone and all of a sudden, I realized that Alyssa was no longer next to me.  I wasn’t sure if she was behind me or in front of me.  I usually finish races faster than her but when we run together for training runs, she is much faster.

I thought I saw someone ahead with an orange shirt. But as it turns out, she was behind me.

A little after we entered the trail, there was the first water stop.  I always stop at ALL water stops during a half marathon and even though I wasn’t warm or thirsty, I did so during this race as well.

The trail was beautiful.  I wish I could have gotten out my phone from my race belt more easily so I could have taken some photos.  The leaves had changed and there were views of the mountains, streams and even a lake.

My biggest problem (and it’s always something) was than my ankle (the one that has 8 screws and a plate in it from surgery almost 4 years ago) was throbbing. It has never hurt like this while running before.  It was probably from the dampness and that this is the first cold run (During my last run, it was almost 80 degrees.) It hurt a lot and I wished that I had some ibuprofen.

There another water stop at almost mile 4 and I took my first Gu and walked for a while.  However, my ankle hurt just as much while walking.  In addition, the bottom of my foot started to hurt (like at the Asbury Park Half).  Still I felt strong, I tried to ignore both discomforts.

I just focused on the scenery.

Miles 5-8:

9:39, 9:55, 10:21, 9:41

We continued on the same trail and I wasn’t as chilled anymore.  I even rolled down my DIY arm warmers. My nose was running from the cold and I kept worrying that it was another nosebleed but that never happened 🙂 (I did bring tissues and tucked them under my shorts but they fell out…  I did have those arm warmers LOL)

Then all of a sudden, maybe around mile 6, at another water stop, my ankle and foot stopped hurting.  WTF?

I also realized that I was ahead of my time from the Palio Half.

Should I start thinking PR?

Nah!  Anything can and usually does happen during the second half of a half marathon.

Around mile 7, I started getting hungry but had to wait until mile 8 for a water stop to eat my 2nd GU.

Miles 9-12:

10:25, 10:07, 9:55, 9:52

Still on the trail but remember that forecast?  Around mile 8 or 9, it started raining lightly.

Throughout the course, the road was covered with wet leaves but now it was getting even more slippery.

Then it started raining harder.  It wasn’t so bad because the trees were acting as an umbrella. But the weather was getting chilly again.

My back was now starting to ache.  It always does toward the end of a race so I tried to watch my form and ignore it.

A little past mile 9, there was the next to last water stop.  I still walked through it even though it could have ended my PR hopes.

I always doubt my strength to finish strong as well as not wanting to push myself too hard and result in an injury.

The rain lessened and at the last water stop, I decided against taking my last GU and just walked only a short bit.

Yes, I decided that I wanted that PR!!!

Mile 13-14:

9:20, 8:38

Finally we left the trail. The race ended with a series of 2 left hand turns. We turned left onto Hoosac St. and left onto Depot St. and the finish line was on Depot St. in front of the Adams Visitor Center parking lot.

I wasn’t sure that I was going to PR.  My Garmin was sometimes right on with the mile markers and other times way off.

As I made the last turn, somebody yelled, “You can beat that guy.”  They meant the guy in front of me.

I gave it everything I had but didn’t even come close.

I did, however, cross under 2:09 and IT WAS A PR!!!!!!!!!!! (My previous PR was 2:09:40 in January 2015.)

Gun or Chip Time: 2:08:59
Garmin Time: 2:08:47

I got my medal, some water and a banana and went to wait for Alyssa.

img_2311

She didn’t finish much after me and she got a PR too!

Post Race:

We were both happy with our times.  But it was raining harder and we were freezing. We decided to forgo the  cold beer and get something to eat.

The race ended at a big festival (Ramblefest) with music, craft booths, many food booths, pumpkin carving for kids, etc.  Too bad the weather was so lousy.

With our food ticket, we could get anything that cost $3 for free. Believe it or not, we could have had a hamburger, chili, hot dog, sausage, fried dough but we both chose grilled cheese. And it was yummy!

While we were waiting for the results, we hung out in front of a big bonfire. That felt so good!

img_2315

Neither one of us did win anything. They gave out cash for top awards and gift cards to the running store for AG awards. I came in 5th and the 4 women ahead of me were each 60 years old. (If it were last year, I would have won!)

rfawards

So we headed toward the buses.  We just missed the bus to return to the shopping center where we left our cars and there was going to be 40 minute wait for the next one.  But the bus that brought the bags decided to take us all.  By this point, I was numb and even my jacket and pants didn’t warm me up.

As soon we got back to our cars, we headed to Target to get something HOT to drink.

img_2321

Even with my tired legs, I managed to spend $160 in the store. (Remember I hadn’t gotten my grocery shopping done the day before.)

I know when you run a long race, you are supposed to take an ice bath but I never do.  I headed straight to my hot tub!!!!

Additional race reflections:

The Good:

  • Close enough to be able to sleep in my own bed the night before.
  • Organized packet pick-up.
  • Lots of parking and easy to locate.
  • Real bathrooms after the race.
  • Running a race with a friend.
  • Enthusiastic volunteers (even in the rain – bugle, bag pipes, music)
  • Scenic course especially with the fall foliage and water views.
  • No major injuries. (just ankle and foot pain –  it’s always something!)
  • Nice selection of refreshments.
  • The festival post race was nice (and would have been even better if the sun came out.)
  • The bonfire was essential with the day’s weather.
  • PRed!! Woot! Woot!

The Bad:

  • The two laps around the parking lot were boring. (It did save the expense of closing roads to make up the 13.1 miles)
  • It was cold and rainy!!
  • No race photos

The Ugly:

  • Nothing really.

It was a great race. I loved it! I would have enjoyed it even if I didn’t get a PR!  But that made it just sweeter. Too bad, the sun couldn’t have come out!!!

Would I recommend this race?

Yes. Yes. Yes. I don’t usually repeat half marathons but if I did, I would run this one again. I’m in luck. The same course can be run in May: The Steel Rail Half Marathon.

Final Stats:

img_2322

my Garmin said 13.16 and I ran the tangents in the parking lot – go figure.

And I felt so good the next day that I climbed up a mountain.

img_2352

Can you believe the sunshine! Wish the weather was like this on race day.

wearing my race shirt, of course.

Next Up:

A few 5ks and 10ks, a 15k and then another half marathon.

Today’s Topic is: Taper quirks/cravings/rituals

I don’t think I do anything weird before my big races but here’s what I always do:

  • I do my last run 2 days before my half marathon. In other words, I leave TWO days with no running at all.
  • I carb load the night before – I usually eat pizza.
  • I make sure I have the right breakfast food for the morning of – tea & cream of wheat hot cereal.
  • I set out my outfit (and all other items such as race belt, gps watch, fuel, etc.) the night before (and if it is a destination race, bring clothes for warmer or colder temps than predicted).  If I am flying, I pack my running stuff in my carry on not my checked luggage.
  • I figure out in advance the race logistics – where to park, is there bag check, when I can pick up my bib, where the race starts & finishes, etc.
  • I scope out online race reviews to see what others have said about the race.
  • I do something fun the day before to take my mind off the race.

Happy Running!  What do you do when you taper? Anything crazy?
