Monday Running Update

spring 2015 monday
Last Week:

  • Monday– Boy, was it a hot one. I sweat for 3.5 miles in the city & the park. Met my BFF for a walk after.

  • Tuesday – Played tennis for 1 1/2 hours after work then met an old friend for a late dinner.
  • Wednesday – Knowing it was going to be very warm, I decided to run before work.  My legs even had some occasional speed but only had time for 3 miles (Yeah, I could have gotten up earlier.)

  • Thursday – Another warm day and forecast for storms got me out of bed early for another before work run. This time 4 miles. Now I know why I don’t run 2 days in a row. Even my new shoes couldn’t remedy my tired legs. (It was warmer and more humid.  Maybe that was it?)

shoe

  • Friday -Just work today and then a fun evening of mah jongg.
  • Saturday – I was planning a 5K but changed my mind and decided to do my long run uninterrupted.

IMG_6698

  • Sunday –  I recuperated with a fun day on the lake. It was the annual Christmas celebration on Log Bay.

Not So Solo Long Run

maybe next year

I had a 5K on my schedule for today but since I ran a 10K race last weekend and I plan to run a 5K race next weekend, I decided to skip it.

Instead I set out to run 10 solo miles.

I headed to the Nisky Bike Path.  Last week, I ran on the Corning Bike Path and I like to do my long runs in a different place each weekend.  They are painful enough.  At least the scenery will be varied thus more interesting.

It was cool in the morning but I procrastinated at home and it was warm by the time I got there.

IMG_6683

the beginning of my run heading toward Schenectady

I guess a lot of running groups were out today.  I was hardly alone.

There were bikers, runners, dog walkers, skateboarders, etc. And everyone waved and smiled.

So I didn’t run with a group but I was hardly alone.

But I did get to choose my route, my show pace and when to stop and walk.

IMG_6688

I continued to Lock 7 and then beyond – many views of the Mohawk river

I was going to turn around here at 2.5 miles as I usually do but decided to go to 5 miles and see where it took me.

IMG_6684

nice and shady for a short while

IMG_6689

a tempting place to take a break – but I didn’t

Finally I approached Blatnik hill and walked up it.  Since I had a lot more miles to run, I didn’t want to risk it by running up that hill.

IMG_6690

view from the hill

This is as far as I have ever gone but I continued until I hit 5 miles.

It got hillier and so I walked more and it was definitely less scenic.

IMG_6691

Eventually I approached some GE buildings and turned around.

The run wasn’t easy. They never are for me. I struggled the last few miles and my walking increased.

The good news is that my feet didn’t hurt as much as last week and I didn’t get any blisters.

IMG_6685

10 miles done!! 5 weeks to go!!

I rewarded my Hokas with new Hokas!!

since they are an old model, they gave it to me for half off and I had a $25 coupon – cant beat that!

Tomorrow is a needed rest day and 2 days on the lake!  WooHoo!

Preview: it will Christmas on Log Bay tomorrow

Happy Running! Any running or racing plans for this Labor Day weekend?

August Recap

Can’t believe the summer has gone by so quickly!!! And it’s already September…

So how did this past month go?

August Goals:

  • Run 3-4 times each week. Yes!

I tried to vary my runs.  I get bored so I just pick different times and places for each one.

IMG_6420

IMG_6607

IMG_6466

  • Start longer runs on the weekend in preparation for Half marathon #15. Yes!

I have gotten up to 10 miles. None were exceptional but that’s the way they always are.  Many were add-ons after races too.

IMG_6445

IMG_6483

IMG_6542

  • Walk at work on days that I don’t run. No!!! Too busy at work.

I lost my walking buddy so I have to be motivated to do it on my own.  I AM NOT. This is a busy time of year at work and I just can’t tear myself away.

  • Go to the gym at least once a week. No! Started to but that ended quickly…

I started going once a week but life just got in the way.

  • Run before work to avoid the heat. Yes! Often.

The summer heat has forced me into this.  My neighborhood is not exciting so I have searched out some others.

IMG_6498

IMG_6507

IMG_6516

  • Run a race or 2. Yes! Two 5ks and one 10K. Won 3rd, 2nd and 1st in my AG.

It’s no secret that I love to race.  It’s the only time I can get my legs to move.  Not ideal for half marathon training but I’m not one to follow traditional plans.

IMG_6392

IMG_6428

IMG_6639

  • Run at least 75 miles. Yes! 86 miles!!

Finally some decent monthly mileage…those long runs helped here.

aug15

  • Spend time with my mentee & sons. Yes!

I have slacked off since she is working a lot and has a boyfriend.  I hadn’t seen her since May so we were long over due. I plan to see them much more often in the fall.

IMG_6653

What else?

  • Spent lots of time on Lake George

Love our boat and our boating friends.  Lake George is the most beautiful lake in the country and the weekend weather has cooperated this summer.  Yay!

IMG_6366-0

IMG_6376

IMG_6658

  • Went to the track and actually won

For my former co-worker and I, this is an annual tradition.  We have gone to breakfast at the race track for over 30 years.  This year since I had the day off, we stayed for the races and I was incredibly lucky.

IMG_6402

  • Saw Jimmy Buffet in concert.

Friends turned me and the hubby on to Jimmy. We went to our first concert last year and vowed to repeat this awesome experience every year.  It’s even more fun with friends.

IMG_6489

  • Spent a weekend with my tennis friends on Schroon River

Another annual thing. About 10 of us gather at a house on the river to play tennis and have fun every summer.

IMG_6576

September Goals:

  • Run 3-4 times each week.
  • Continue the long runs on the weekend in preparation for Half marathon #15.
  • Run a 5k race under 29 minutes.
  • Run a 10K race under 60 minutes.
  • Take a yoga class.
  • Start doing planks again.
  • Pick a spring half marathon.
  • Run at least 90 miles.

Happy Running! How was your August?  Anything exciting planned for September?

Monday Running Update

spring 2015 monday
Last Week:

  • Monday– Since I hadn’t run for two days, I dragged myself out of bed and ran 4 sweaty miles in a different (upscale) neighborhood.  Glad I got it done before work but it was already warm. Enjoyed the new views – elaborate gardens, dead turtle (no, not me but felt like it) and a flock of wild turkeys.

  • Tuesday -I was planning to rest but woke up early and decided that I needed to sweat. Ran in the same neighborhood (but a different loop) as yesterday.  No dead turtles or wild turkey sightings but I did bump into a tennis friend. After work, I played 1 1/2 hours of tennis followed by our usual dinner out.

IMG_6209

  • Wednesday Another hot day and I had planned to repeat my ice cream run of last week but got invited to a friend’s birthday party.  Glad I had run Monday & Tuesday.

11880565_10206040184902125_4371513143527891020_n

11896145_10206040185382137_298409084390813245_n

  • Thursday – I needed to run off those wings and birthday cake so I got up early and ran some 4 slow miles in the same neighborhood. I ran into the mother wild turkey and her children.

  • Friday -Just work today.  Very busy getting ready for the beginning of the school year.
  • Saturday – I got up early today because I wanted to do my long run before my weekend on the river with the tennis ladies. To save time, I ran into town and back. It was a difficult run (Why don’t they get easier??) but I did get 9.5 miles done.

I arrived at Schroon River just as the girls were finishing up with tennis. After lunch we went for a 2 mile walk.

  • Sunday –  More tennis ladies arrived today.  But before they arrived, I sneaked out for a run.  Love this area to run in.

We played tennis in the morning and after lunch, we relaxed and chatted the rest of the day away.

23.25 miles for the week with only 3 rest days and 4 days of running.

This Week:  (Week #6 of HM training)

  • Monday-  rest, walk at walk, gym?
  • Tuesday – 4 mile run after work
  • Wednesday – rest, mall walk with bff
  • Thursday – 4 mile run after work
  • Friday – rest, mah jongg
  • Saturday – 10k race + 4 miles, baby shower, time with my mentee & sons
  • Sunday – boating

Monday Running Update

spring 2015 monday
Last Week:

  • Monday– Today was a rest day. Nothing exciting except for work and getting my nails done after work.
  • Tuesday -I had planned to run before work but it was pouring. Then I was going to run during lunch…still raining. Tennis was cancelled after work so I had no excuses.  I tortured myself with 3 miles on the treadmill. Torture because it was so hot and I left my iPad home…no TV to pass the time.

  • Wednesday No rain today and cooler temps so I went to the Crossings for an easy 4 mile run.  My friend’s daughter was working at a nearby ice cream shop so I had to run by and buy a milkshake and then run back (which added an extra mile).

  • Thursday – Another rest day.  Just work and met my BFF at the mall for a walk after work.
  • Friday – I went into work late today. I had a busy weekend planned and I wanted to get miles done in case I didn’t have time to run during the weekend. I drove to the bike path and ran  8.75 slow miles. By slow, I mean that I stopped at Starbucks and stopped many times to take photos, read my email, check on FB, etc. At least I was outdoors and the weather was great.

  • Saturday – I got early today because I had to proctor the MPREs at work.  Afterward, we met some friends and drove to the Xfinity Center in MA to see Huey Lewis and the News and JIMMY BUFFET!! I am a proud “Parrothead.” It was a blast!

  • Sunday after getting home at 2:30 am, we still got up early to head to the lake. I relaxed with some reading, hiking and dinner out.

2015 Bacon Hill Bonanza 5K Race Report

bhb

I was very tempted to sign up for 10K instead of the 5k.  They were both the same price and I needed to run 8 miles before my half marathon next weekend.

10 K

Then I remembered the hills of the second half of the 10K and that the 5k was an out and back and would be mostly flat.

5k

So I kept my decision to run the 5k and then planned to run 5 miles after.

20140412-170820.jpg

at last year’s race (sunny & no wind)

I ran this race last year and loved it. They had great food – the usual food but also chili and homemade muffins & cookies (including gluten free ones).

20140412-163900.jpg

And there was chocolate milk, fresh from the dairy.

20140412-163910.jpg

Plus, I won a homemade apple pie as first in my age group.

20140412-163848.jpg

The race started at 10 am which was good since it would be an hour minute drive from my house.

Again the weather was tricky. What to wear? It was cool in the morning (low 40s) but cloudy and very very windy.  I opted for a long sleeve shirt, skirt & compression socks. I brought a jacket, just in case. I am so tired of wearing tights and layers that I’d rather be cold.

I got to the race early and found a parking spot in a field next to the church.  The race started at the church  in the town of Bacon Hill, a small farming town with awesome scenery. (It reminded me of Vermont.)

20140412-163933.jpg

20140412-163921.jpg

20140412-164000.jpg

It was more chilly than I thought.  It was in the 30s with the windchill and the gusts were at least 40 mph.

image

got a nice gender-specific tech shirt with no advertising on it

I decided to keep my jacket on and I was still cold.  I wished that I had worn tights and gloves.

image

I didn’t think I would know anyone at this run since last year, I hung out with Holly who was in the Turkey Trot training group and now the FRW training group but she had to work this year and couldn’t race.

But I did bump into someone that I recognized probably from another race.  Some also recognized me because she used to read my blog.  How cool is that.  She is also a SkirtSports ambassador.  We chatted about that and local races.

Soon it was time for the race to start. The pastor read a prayer, the church bells rang and we were off.

The 5k was an out and back.  The 10k veered to the right and supposed had hills and breath taking views.

I decided to go out fast.  I always have positive splits so why try not to.  It isn’t as flat as the map shows.  The hills are rolling throughout but not that bad. Even I could run up them.

I loved all the signs along the route.

13978706176_630de8b7c5_z

This one as my favorite:14002247934_c17e330207_z

The wind was a killer.  I was freezing and the gusts made it worse. There were volunteers on the course calling out times. I occasionally glanced down at my Garmin to make sure I was running in the low 9’s. Eventually we turned around and headed back… I was hoping that the wind would be at my back.  But no, it was still blowing and making me miserable.

I stopped for water and walked for a while.  Not because I was thirsty but because I was was out of breath.  I never seemed to get into my groove. I guess I need to do more speed drills.

I thought I had gotten a second wind but then again, I was winded and stopped to walk again during the last mile.

I knew at this point, there would be no PR.  That was fine because I wasn’t expecting one.

As I approached the finish line, I realized that I could still finish under 28 minutes, Unfortunately I had no gas left and I barely made it.  My Gamin said: 27:57!!  So I was pleased.

image

I immediately made a bee line for the chocolate milk.  Boy was it good.  I had at least 2 cups.

image

They had the same great food (chili, muffins, cookies, fruit) as last year plus a vegetarian dish and pizza.. I sampled it all! YUM!

image

image

They also were selling chicken dinners for $6.  So tempting.

image

Eventually they posted the results…Mine was 28:01.  That’s ok.  I knew that I really crossed under 28 minutes.

baconhill15

Even though I added a heavier jacket, I was still freezing.

baconhill5k2105

And they gave out the men’s awards first. Finally they called the women’s awards.

bhb5k15

57 out of 182

And I won a pie again!!! (Love my age group!)

image

I put the pie in my car and planned on running 5 more miles.  But I was so chilled, I couldn’t bear to hit the wind again even though this area is so nice to run in.  Tomorrow is another day.  Hopefully the weather will be more cooperative.

All in all, I loved this race.  I will definitely do it again…maybe even the 10K.

Goals:

Goal A: PR (under 27:11)
Goal B: Course PR (under 28:56)
Goal C: Under 30 minutes.

B & C.

and my other goals:

Keep Calm

and

  • Stay healthy.
  • Have fun.
  • Run 5 more miles after the race.
  • Win an Age Group award.
  • Run a course PR
  • Keep all miles under 10 minute pace.

All except running 5 more miles after.

Splits:

mile 1- 8:50
mile 2 – 9:17 (long walk)
mile 3 –  9:01 (short walk)
.1 – 7:55

Last Long One

Saturday or Sunday, depending on a race or the weather.

This past weekend, I was tempted but decided NOT to race.

I thought I might run the Rabbit Ramble 4 miler like I did last year.  You get a shirt and gloves & I won my age group. But I have raced the past 3 weekends and I felt that I should relax and run 12 miles.  (Ha ha..relax & 12 miles in the same sentence.)

4 miler - 38:06

I also could go to my FRW Training Group run on Saturday which I have missed the past 3 weekends that I was racing and then continue running until I completed 12 miles.

Then there was the weather forecast.

ap4-5weather

Will winter ever end??

So I went back and forth and finally decided to do my long run on Sunday.

Well, Saturday was not rainy or snowy as predicted but it was cold and so windy…40 mph wind gusts.

Instead of running, I spent the afternoon with my mentee, Amanda and her 2 sons.  I hadn’t seen them since Christmas. They played on the playground in the park and then we went to an Easter Egg hunt. I was soooo cold!

lots of kids hinting for eggs

Today I was determined to get my 12 mile run done.  I asked Judy who I ran with last weekend to accompany me on part of it.

It was cold in the 30s but 20s with the windchill (Yes, It is April!!) but not as windy as yesterday. I got to the bike path early to run 4 miles before she arrived.

image

I headed west toward lock 7.  It was sunny but boy was it windy.

image

Then I turned around at mile 2 and I was actually warm running with the sun in my face.

image

I actually had a decent run despite the wind and the walking at about a 10 minute/mile pace.

When I got back to my car, I changed my hat, gloves and took off my fleece vest.

Judy was already there waiting, I’m glad she came. I did not feel like running 8 more miles alone.

image

We tackled 8 miles slowly. 4 miles out and then back heading in the opposite direction from my earlier run.

image

It was a nice to have someone to chat with while running. Judy may run slower but she runs at a more steady pace.  I, on the other hand, run faster and tire myself out and have to walk.  In the end, we finished together and stayed together most of the run.

The sun started to go in but the wind had died down quite a bit. I made the right decision running those 4 mile earlier.

image

The opened a new Starbucks nearby – my reward!

12 miles done!  After a long hot shower, I enjoyed a nice Easter dinner with my hubby, mil and 2 stepsons.

2 weeks to go!!! Ready or not, Asbury Park, we I come!

Happy Easter!
