TT: Staying Motivated to Run

This week’s topic is: How Do You Maintain Your Running Motivation?

  • Sign Up for Races.

If I have a race on my schedule, I will NOT skip a run or cut short a long run.  I want to run well in a race but more importantly, I want to remain injury-free.

  • Join Running Groups.

As often as possible, I try enlist the company of a friend or two on my runs.  Running alone is no fun!! And you cannot procrastinate if someone is waiting for you!!

I am also fortunate that there are a few local running groups who post their runs.  Sometimes I do join them.

SOAR

  • Volunteer at a Race.

I always get running FOMO when I volunteer.

  • Mentor a New Runner.

New runners have that beginner runner excitement and it’s contagious.

  • Blog.

I post 3x a week. If I don’t run, I feel like a phony since I schedule my upcoming runs or races on Sunday’s blog post and then recap them the Sunday after.

And of course, these ladies:

  • Read Running-related Books and/or Magazines.

I recently read Des and Kara’s book and especially enjoyed the book below:

  • Listen to Running-related Podcasts.

It’s entertaining, makes the time go by faster and I usually learn a thing or two.

amr_logo1

just one of many that I do listen to…

  • Buy New Gear, Clothes, Shoes!

new shoes!

  • Put it on your Calendar.

It’s just as important as a work meeting or a dentist appointment. So schedule it.

  • Prep the Night Before.

If I run in the morning, my running stuff would be on the floor next to my bed. Since I run after work, I pack my running clothes the night before.  It’s so easy to skip the run when you are tired in the morning or wake up late.

IMG_4793

  • Plan Food Rewards for after each run.

I admit it.  Food is my reward after any run or race.

  • Pick a New Route (esp. one with Pretty Scenery).

I love to run with a view of the water… or on a path with fall foliage.

Happy Running! How do you stay motivated to run? Please share.

Weekly Run Down for 2.25.24-3.3.24: Training or Tapering?

If I hadn’t gotten injured, I would have already run a half marathon on Feb. 18 and I’d be tapering for the NYC Half Marathon in 2 weeks.

But I’m still playing catch up especially since I skipped my long run while on vacation in Florida.

Although is it still called “training” if you just want to finish the race?

Last Week –

  • Sunday – Another frigid morning.  I started the day with a visit to the gym.

haven’t posted a gym selfie in a while… just wanted to show you how empty it was (most people were on treadmills or the track)

After some errands, I went to a Chinese restaurant to celebrate the birthday of two friends (in the umbrella hats.)

  • Monday – Although my STEM mentoring (training victims of DV for a 5K in April) started last Monday, I was away so this was my first meet-up.

I knew that it would be the 2nd week of Couch-to-5k and mostly walking so I got in a few miles in the ‘hood during lunch.

thumbs up for sunshine and warmer temps (oops. overdressed)

I was correct in that most of the 2 miles were walking.

  • Tuesday – A busy work day but I went for an unplanned run after work since the forecast was for rain the next day.

so nice to still have daylight after work… and it was warm,  humid though the wind was not fun

In the evening, there was a ZOOM meeting for those who would be mentoring in the Freihofer Training Challenge (FTC) this spring.

We got the news that the race will have a new name (No longer “Freihofers.”)… but there will still be cookies!!

  • Wednesday – An early morning visit to the gym. It was a dreary rainy day and so I didn’t miss my outdoor run.

I did go to the office and had to stop on the way to …

yes, my office desk still has running-related items on it…

and then after work, I visited my granddaughter.

still cute as ever

The wind in the evening/night was insane… so glad that we didn’t lose power.

  • Thursday – I briefly contemplated running before work.

Not happening… wasn’t it just 60 degrees a few days ago?

So I waited until lunch and …

sun was out but… brrr

I finally dragged myself out to the rail trail after work… and I couldn’t believe how cold I was!!

it was sooo windy and I couldn’t wait to get done and be back in my warm car!!

  • Friday – Just a morning visit to the gym and mah jongg in the evening.
  • Saturday –  FOMO on a race I would have liked to have run…

Electric 5 Miler was now a 10k

but it was Long Run and brunch day… 12 miles on the plan and rain in the forecast.

We made the decision to run no matter what… and it never rained until we were done and at brunch!!

prepared for rain but after 4 mi, got rid of the jacket, extra shirt and gloves…

  • Sunday –  It will be a gym visit… maybe a hike since the temps look to be rising.

This Coming Week on the Run –

  • Monday – Day Off so hopefully a hike or a run, STEM mentoring
  • Tuesday – GYM
  • Wednesday – run (lunch)
  • Thursday – run (after work)
  • Friday – GYM, mah jongg
  • Saturday Long Run (10 mi.)
  • Sunday – GYM

This Coming Week on the Blog –

  • Tuesday –  Staying Motivated
  • Friday – 2024 NYC Marathon?

Happy Running! Training for any big or small races? Any signs of spring? Has your weather been crazy this week? Please share.

Ultimate Coffee Date for March 2024

It’s that time of the month…

time to join up with Coco & Deborah for their ultimate coffee date.

NYC is the theme for this month’s post:

1.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that my first half marathon since last September is in TWO weeks (and in NYC)!

It’s #66 but I’m still anxious about it.

2. Over coffee…

I’d tell you that this is the second time I’ve run this race but both times it has been a “recovery” race. And so the goal of my training has been “just finish.”

Do you believe that I thought this was a “slow” finish time? Now I’ll be happy with 2:36:01.

3. Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I haven’t been to NYC for work in two months but after I return home March 18 from the race, I go back on March 24 and I’m there for the rest of the work week.

You will be seeing plenty of Central Park pics… I hope the cherry blossoms are early this year again.

4.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I am also working in NYC in April, twice in June and in July.

Maybe that why I subconsciously signed up for races in May

May 18 (Prospect Park to Coney Island)

and August

Aug 3- 10k (on Governor’s Island)

5. Over coffee…

I’d tell you that the sign up for the guaranteed entry for the 2024 NYC Marathon opened up on Feb. 21…  and I have until March 21 to decide if I want to run it for 3rd time.

I have 3 close friends running it (another may also qualify and another who is entering the lottery).

FOMO is real.

Training is hard!!

It’s so expensive!

Spectating could be lots of fun!!

Anyone interested in entering the lottery?

Happy Running! What’s new with you?  Please share.

Bridge the Gap 5k Race Recap

This was NOT a planned race.

I had signed up for a half marathon on Feb. 18.

But as you know I sprained my ankle in December and although it had healed and I had returned to running, I decided to defer my entry until next year and focus on training for the March 17 NYC Half Marathon.

But could I go on a vacation without a race scheduled?

Nope. So I signed up for Bridge the Gap 5k because:

  • A race.
  • (Only) a 5k and I had done runs up to 10 miles (though slow run/walk)
  • The price didn’t go up if you registered at the last minute.
  • It wasn’t too far from where I was staying in Florida.
  • There was Senior Sneaker pricing (for those over 65)
  • The course was described as scenic (running along the water and over a bridge)
  • I’d never been to Singer Island.

Training:

If you follow my posts, you also know that I have started running again but slowly and with a lot of walking.

My ankle was not 100% but it didn’t hurt when I ran.

Pre-Race Activities and Preparations:

Truthfully I was not sure that I would run the race. I was on vacation and enjoying relaxing while hanging out with friends.

In fact the night before the race, my friend and I went out for Mexican and had a few margaritas. Then we stayed up discussing all the world problems until midnight.

Oops. All the things you shouldn’t do before a race.

My friend wasn’t going to run it but I thought she might drive there with me so we could spend the day together after.

I decided that if the weather was nice and I could get up at 5:15 am, I’d do it. If not, we’d just go to the beach.

If I did run the race, my goal for it would be just finishing especially since I would NOT be acclimated to the temps and/or humidity and I’d probably be hung over and sleep deprived

Race Description:

…a beautiful 5K run beginning at Ocean Walk Singer Island across the 65 feet high Blue Heron Bridge. This challenging and incredibly scenic course takes runners up and over the Blue Heron Bridge with views of Peanut Island and the Port of Palm Beach, returning back over the bridge and finishing at Ocean Walk on Singer Island.

  • Prerace: Coffee, bananas, bars.
  • Post race: DJ Dance party, vendor booths
  • Age Group Awards (5-year age groups, 3 deep)
  • New for 2024: Ruck Division, a special division to walk with a ruck sack, weighted vest/ backpack.

Race Day:

As I always do, I brought my race day breakfast from home: oatmeal.  I was up at 5:15 am in order to be ready to leave by 6:00 am. The race started at 7:30 am and it was a 45 min ride there.

I didn’t even check the weather. I just put in a tank and skirt. I decided to forgo the compression calf sleeves since it would most likely be warm and humid.

Believe it or not, my friend got up too and said she would come if I drove.

We were deliriously tired but hey, carpe diem.

There was no traffic at that hour and we saw the sun rising as we drove over the Blue Heron Bridge.

We easily found parking in an outdoor mall near the start.

I picked up my bib and shirt.

And my friend signed up for her first 5k!!! She said that she would just walk.

I was ecstatic.

Since we were early, we walked around collecting freebies and taking photos.

zumba, anyone?

Then we walked back to the car to drop stuff off.

Soon it was time to line up.

I pushed into the crowd and my friend ended up in the back. There were close to 800 racers. All ages and paces. Everyone was so friendly and cheerful.

I was very relaxed. But at the same time, wondering how it would go. Would I remember how to run fast? My last 5k was back in September.

Here’s what I remember about the race (Warning it’s kinda a blur)

There was a bang, confetti and off we went.

I vowed to enjoy the course and not look at my Garmin the whole race.

I remember that it was an out and back before we headed over the bridge.  It was nice to see the speedy lead runners and also I spotted my friend among the walkers.  She yelled “Go Darlene!”

I don’t think I walked until the first water stop, about a mile in and before we hit the bridge.

I admit that I never train for hills so whenever I see one, I just walk.  But most of the runners around me were walking too.  I walked, ran a bit, walked more… ran a bit.

There were drummers helping us get to the top… It was needed.

see me struggling on the right?

But then, I could pick up the race and sprint down the bridge.

Of course, we had to do it all over again.  There was second water stop… I was getting warm and had two cups this time.  I also saw my friend again and we waved to each other.

my friend took this pic as she was walking over the bridge

The second time over the bridge wasn’t any easier and I ran/walked up it and ran down it.

Then we ran along the water (I think I walked some more as I was tiring and hot) and finally the finish line was ahead.

Unfortunately there was no sprint in me but I did my best and I crossed with a smile and bubbles in the air.

I looked at the clock and of course, my first thought was “Over 30 minutes! How did I run this slow? WTF?”

The negativity didn’t last long. “What a beautiful course. Nothing hurt. I ran over a bridge twice.  I raced!!!!! I am very lucky!! Such a great day. Can’t wait to do another.”

Post Race Activities:

After I got my medal (and a towel), I got a text from my friend that she was doing good and was at Mile 2.

I had some coffee (that I hadn’t noticed before the race.)

I waited at the finish line for a bit but then it dawned on me that it would be fun to encourage my friend.

So I ran the last mile and joined her as she walked to finish her first 5k. She was so proud.

We then checked the results and surprisingly I won my age group.

While they were announcing the top 3 in the race, the Masters and Grandmasters winners, I noticed someone who looked like Jeannie Rice. (A 75 year old who holds world records at most distances.) Yes, it was her and I fangirled big time.

she was the Masters winner (with a time of 23 minutes)

For the age group awards, you just picked up a pint glass. East peasy.

Of course more photos before headed off for our free breakfast.

and some free ones:

Scrambled eggs, biscuits with gravy. We skipped the mimosas/beer.

Additional Race Reflections:

The Good:

  • Easy packet pick-up.
  • Pre-race emails with instructions and maps.
  • Cool uva projection long sleeve shirt. Gender specific too.
  • Warmup Zumba before the race.
  • Lots of freebies.
  • Real bathrooms at the start/finish area.
  • Two water stops along the course.
  • Well marked course.
  • Water views the whole race.
  • Out and back sections so able to see the faster and slower runners twice.
  • Nice medal.
  • Free breakfast and mimosas/beer post race.
  • Free photos (over 1,000)
  • Awards announced for top 3 but age group awards just picked up separately.
  • Age group award was a pint glass
  • Scavenger hunt prizes
  • Important Charity – education scholarships
  • Great weather (sunny and not too hot)
  • Meeting Jeannie Rice
  • Ankle felt fine after the race.

The Bad:

  • Running over that steep bridge twice.
  • My slow finish time.
  • They ran out of shirts in some sizes

The Ugly:

  • Nothing

Would I recommend this race?

Yes.  For all the reasons above.

Final Stats:

still holding my title as “queen of the positive splits”

Weekly Run Down for 2.11.24-2.25.24: Back Up North!!

Brrr!

Just as I finally got acclimated to the warmer temps and humidity, I’m back!!

Two Weeks Ago –

  • Sunday – I thought that I might participate in the last HMRRC race.

sad to miss hanging out with these runners…

But due to an impending snowstorm, I decided to leave a day early on my trip. Hence, I had a lot to do.

I did get in one last trip to the gym and then spent the rest of the day on errands, packing and cooking (to feed the hubby while I’m gone…)

  • Monday – Early morning flight to West Palm Beach, FL.  I picked up my rental car and drove to my friend, Fonda’s in Delray Beach.

It was sunny and very warm so we hung out at the pool and then visited my favorite place to walk and bird watch – Wakodahatchee Wetlands.

  • Tuesday – It’s hard to get motivated to run when on vacation but I forced myself to get up early and head to Lake Ida to get in a few miles.

And since it was still early, I drove to the beach and walked for while.

The weather was perfect for soaking up some Vitamin D so Fonda and I returned to the beach and spent the afternoon there.

the pictures on the right were from my morning walk…

  • Wednesday – Galentines’s Day and a planned meet-up with blogger Jenny.

But first, I drove to beach to see the sun rise and it was just perfect.  I also had enough time to walk along the beach and pick up some pretty shells.

saw a wedding proposal too…

Then I met Jenny to walk at one of her favorite trails… two hours later we were done and headed to Starbuck’s to continue chatting.

it was so nice to chat with her…

Next, I stopped off at Gumbo Limbo because I wanted to meet Cari‘s mom who volunteers there. I hadn’t been there in years so I stayed for a quick visit (Unfortunately, they are renovating so the rescued turtles were housed elsewhere.)

still lots of interesting fish to see and a butterfly garden

I got back in time to meet Fonda at the pool and then we had dinner out with two of her friends.

  • Thursday –Another busy day in sunny Delray Beach, Florida. I started with some running in Boca Delray, the golf community where Fonda lives

followed by walking at Delray Oaks Natural Area Trail

and the El Rio Trail.

a great place to bike but otherwise disappointing (just a paved road)

The afternoon was spent with Fonda at Morakami Japanese Gardens. We ate lunch there and walked around the beautiful gardens.

beautiful trees, flowers, waterfalls, statues, alligators, birds, fish, turtles, iguanas and more..

Then I switched lodging. I would be staying 3 nights with my tennis friend Laurie who also lived in Delray Beach.

Tonight we had a planned outing to the Delray Open tennis tournament. We saw two great matches.

a exciting 3-setter with 2 unknowns and a nail biting win (7-6, 7-6) by Tiafoe (that ended at midnight)

  • Friday – This morning, I met a former co-worker for a walk/chat and bird watching at Green Cay.

afterward, we joined her hubby for lunch at a nearby deli

Then another perfect beach day with my friend Laurie. On the way home, we stopped at the Pinball Museum (so much fun playing on the old machines) before going to a Mexican restaurant for dinner.

  • Saturday – FOMO. No half marathon this trip as I deferred the A1A Publix Fort Lauderdale Half marathon until next year.

So instead I signed up for a 5k. What was I thinking… an early start and a longish drive.

I kinda forgot about the race and had Mexican food and margaritas for dinner the night before and we went to bed after midnight.

But I did go and my friend Laurie came too. She walked her first 5k.  We had a blast.

won my AG and met Jeannie Rice – what a day!

After a free breakfast at the race, we decided to take the long way home and drove along the coast all the way to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea

Mar-A-Lago on the bottom right

Last Week –

  • Sunday – This morning I moved to my last stop. 2 nights staying at my college roommate, Barbara’s in Boca Raton.

We were planning to go to an arts festival or the beach.

Nope!  I had my first rainy vacation day.

Plan B – a French movie, a walk in the mall, happy hour, and then a nice dinner out.

a surprise meet-up in the mall with someone who was in the group we went to France with during our junior of college.

  • Monday – Phew, the rain only lasted one day. I started the day with a run around Barbara’s community.

Then we drove to the Coconut Grove Arts Festival in Miami. The weather was lovely and there was lots to see (and many freebies.)

On the way home, Barbara insisted that I had to eat at Jaxson’s.

the diet starts when I get home… we did share that foot long hot dog…

In the evening, we went to hear a great Motown group that was playing at a club in Delray Beach.

  • Tuesday – My last day in Florida. 😦

You know that my favorite Florida thing to do is watch the sun rise on the beach.  The weather cooperated and it was again perfect!!

Eventually it was time to say good-by and return my rental car and fly home.

  • Wednesday – I was pooped but I dragged myself out of bed to go to the gym… it had been a long time since my last visit.

UGH!!

It was a work from home day so I could wait until the temps warmed up to go for a lunch run.

the sun made it feel warmer than the temps and just in case you missed pics of Diamond..

I agreed to volunteer with STEM, a group that trains victims of domestic violence to run a 5k. I was scheduled for Mondays but I was away.  I had planned to go tonight but I was too busy with unpacking and laundry.

  • Thursday –  A busy work day but at least again I was WFH so I squeezed in my run before work. It was less windy and warmer than the day before…

I need to start the day like this more often…

Then after work, my monthly dinner with my tennis friends was scheduled.

  • Friday – Gym morning, then just work and mah jongg in the evening.
  • Saturday – Long Run. I ran 10 miles two weeks ago and last weekend only a 5k, so this week, 11 miles was on my schedule as I prepare for the NYC Half on March 17.

It was cold!! And windy! But I had company for most of the run!  Brunch was the best part. LOL

too cold for a runfie… ran/walked the first 4 w/Barbara and then ran the next 4 w/Stan & Sherry, dragged myself thru the last 3 – feeling very out of shape!!

  • Sunday- A visit to the gym and birthday party for 2 friends

This Coming Week on the Run –

  • Monday – run, STEM mentor
  • Tuesday- gym
  • Wednesday – run
  • Thursday – run
  • Friday – gym
  • Saturday – Long Run
  • Sunday- gym

This Coming Week on the Blog –

  • Tuesday –  Bridge the Gap 5K Race Recap
  • Friday – Ultimate Coffee Date

Runfessions for February 2024

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1.I runfess…

Cari was correct, I did defer my entry to this half marathon because I will probably run it in 2025.

2. I runfess…

Since I had to pay $40 to defer, I do not plan to register for the race until the very last minute next year. That way, I will be sure that I am trained and healthy and more importantly, the registration cost will be at its highest (I won’t feel so bad for paying the $40.)

3. I runfess…

It’s hard for me to go on vacation without running a race.

As you know by now, I ran a 5k while I was there.

And it was so much fun!!

4. I runfess…

Of course, though my speed work was zilch and my ankle still iffy, I still checked the results to see if my slow time won me an age group award.

And I won my age group with my slowest time since my first year running (2008).  You just have to show up sometimes.

5. I runfess…

Now that I’m running again, the race bug has bitten me. A new race (for me) and I haven’t been to Governor’s Island in a few years.

Aug 3 – a 10k with ice cream – around NYC’s Governor’s Island

Happy Running! Anything to runfess this month? Please share.

TT: Running Pet Peeves

This week’s topic is: Running Pet Peeves

  • Progress is so slow.

When you stop running for a lengthy period of time, your fitness seems to go away so quickly. I mean running 3 miles feels like a marathon.

If you are trying to get faster, don’t get me started…. That plateau seems to last forever.

  • Race courses are not accurately described.

Why do race directors feel that they need to describe a course as “fast and flat” when it is obviously not?

Just call it challenging and hilly if it is!!

  • Dressing for different seasons during the same season.

It’s easy in the summer as it’s usually warm.

But fall and spring could feel like summer or feel like winter.

Winter is the worse.  We could have three seasons in one week.

I’ve been running for a while but I still struggle on dressing correctly…

  • Getting slower as you age.

This one is near and dear to my heart.

It happens and we know it will but it’s hard to accept.

  • Finding the perfect running partner.

Yes, I have a lot of running friends and racing friends.

Some of my running friends run slower than me, some run faster.  One of them who used to run at my pace has decided not to run intervals anymore…

  • Race Deferrals.

I know organizing a race is expensive.  And many races offer the option of paying extra for insurance if you can’t run the race.

So many races do not as a result offer deferrals and if they do they are costly.

Races are expensive enough so I don’t want to wait until the last minute to sign up and pay more (My issue.)

So if I get injured… 😦

  • Shoes.

When you like a style and the next model changes!!

That happened to me often when I wore Mizunos and some other brands.  So far so good with Topos.

Happy Running! What are some of your pet peeves? Please share.

TT: Things I’ve Learned to Love About Running

This week’s topic is: Things You’ve Learned to Love About Running

  • It’s always challenging.

Short races are just as hard as long distances.

  • Finishing is Winning

The only goal you really need to accomplish is crossing that finish line.

  • The People

Some of my closest friends are those I’ve met since I became a runner.

  • Race-Cations

I rarely ever to go anywhere without considering running a race while I’m there.  It just adds to the excitement of the trip.

  • Getting Me Outside in All Temps

I hate the cold but as runner, I will go out in below zero temps and when it’s snowing.

  • I Feel Healthier.

I never (knock on wood) get sick.

  • It doesn’t end once you reach a certain age.

Unlike a gymnast or tennis pro, you can compete as long as you are able.

  • Sunday – Rest Day!  I started at the gym and then got lots done including a needed manicure, car wash, etc.
  • Monday – Day Off in order to hike with my running friend Heidi.

I got up early to get my run done. It was freezing so I decided to postpone it until the next day.

Heidi and I headed south (though it was still very cold) and our first stop was Thomas Cole Historic Site. From there we walked across the Rip Van Winkle Bridge and back (so windy but the sun felt awesome).

We had a delicious lunch nearby (with a water view) and then drove to the Olana Historic Site where walked some of the trails.

6.3 miles on our feet for the day before we stopped for dessert on the way home.

  • Tuesday – I went to the gym early and then at lunch, I rushed out to do my run (as I needed to burn off calories before my dinner with my stepson later on.)

still chilly but day 4 of sunshine. Woo Hoo!

  • Wednesday – Can we make it 5 in a row?  Sunny days, I mean?

Yes! So an after work run followed by a walk in the mall with my BFF.

lucky to have that extra daylight.. but still icy heading west..

The sunset was amazing but my friend’s photo is better than mine:

  • Thursday – Another early morning gym day. Still chilly (20s) but lots of sunshine!!!

I thought I’d have company for my after work run at UAlbany.

Instead I ran alone and chose the other end of the rail trail.

I do love all the views of the creek at this end of the bike path.

  • Friday – Rest day. It was supposed to rain but it was again sunny. So I took a quick walk at lunch…

first time on the waterline behind my house since the summer..

visited my granddaughter after work

I’m biased but she is the cutest..

and ended the day with the mah jongg ladies.

  • Saturday – Long Run and brunch day.. We were finally able to run on the rail as the snow has melted.  My plan was for 10 miles or as many miles as my ankle could handle.

Intervals and a friend got me through it and even the rain held off.

10 miles and “fake spring”

After brunch, I rushed off to my hair appt.

  • Sunday –  It will be a gym visit… or maybe my first race (a free local one) or perhaps I will walk it like the last one… hopefully the weather will be better.

it poured the whole race (and we walked)

And then start packing for my Florida trip.

What no pictures of new kitty?

Champ has started to tolerate Diamond…
