Weekly Run Down for 6.30.24-7.7.24: Welcome July!

The summer is flying by…

Last Week –

  • Sunday – The early morning rain stopped after I came home from the gym and we had a lovely day on Lake George.

sunshine, little breeze, lunch/beer and I read a whole book= 🙂 (and ice cream after. LOL)

  • Monday – I woke up to rain (again) so I postponed my run until after work.

a sweaty one… I so wish I had run in the morning

  • Tuesday – Too busy to run before work… but then my Internet went down so I had to race to work.  As a result, I had no time to pack running clothes.

After work, I rushed home to change clothes and meet friends to walk on the rail trail.

No RUN!!!

  • Wednesday – Rest Day before tomorrow’s race. I did go to the gym for a quick run before work (to make up for the skipped run the day before)

and then met my BFF for a walk after work after a quick visit to see my granddaughter.

  • Thursday – For the 4th year in a row I ran the Firecracker 4.  

It was great to have a few friends join me and to see so many runners that I knew there.

The race was followed by drinks, lunch and great conversation.

  • Friday – Day Off so I could also participate in the Lake George Hike-athon again.

This year, I invited Deirdre and Kevin and I chose Cat Mountain. It was longer and more challenging that previous hikes. and then we would join my hubby for some boating on Lake George.

Well, unfortunately Deirdre got sick and they cancelled.

I was tired and had climbed Cat Mountain many times so I decided to skip the hike and just drive up to the lake.

We barbecued, swam, napped and had a relaxing day.

  • Saturday – Long Run Day. My last week of only 6 miles.

We woke up to thunderstorms… but they were short-lived and I’ve never sweat so much during a run.

  • Sunday – Again the gym… not sure what is planned for the rest of the day…

  • Monday – DAY OFF, run, hike w/friends
  • Tuesday – GYM, run, walk

Ultimate Coffee Date for July 2024

It’s that time of the month…

time to join up with Coco & Deborah for their ultimate coffee date.

This mug is in honor of my 9 local “running” friends (We call ourselves “Sole Sisters.)

1.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I have a tennis friend that talked a brunch of us into going to a Salt Den.  I had an open mind esp. when they said that it benefits:

    • RESPIRATORY CONDITIONS-
      Asthma
      Allergies
      Bronchitis
      Cystic Fibrosis
      COPD
      Long Covid
      Sinus Infections
      Snoring
      Ear Infections
    • SKIN DISORDERS-
      Acne
      Eczema
      Psoriasis
    • MENTAL / MINDFULNESS
      Anxiety
      Stress Relief
      PTSD
      Jet Lag

As you can see from the photo above, we sat in lounge chairs in a dimly lit cold room surrounded by Himalayan salt crystals. No water or cell phones (obviously I had mine) are permitted. They provide blankets. You relax there (without shoes) for about an hour.

Honestly, I felt nothing during and after but I’m glad I tried it.  One and done.

2. Over coffee… 

I’d tell you that when my cat died in March, my hubby tried to convince me that my kitten Diamond was lonely.  I finally gave in and got another cat.

I really don’t think she was lonely and in the beginning, she really hated this new cat and made his life miserable.

I think she’s coming around but he prefers to avoid her (which makes her content.)

3. Over coffee… 

I’d tell you that due to my work schedule, hiking has taken a back seat.

I plan to take a few Mondays off this summer and fall to get back out there and explore some trails with friends.

I’d tell you that I question my sanity for training for another marathon.

FFF: NYC Marathon 2024: Yes or No? | My First 5K and More...

I do enjoy just running 6 miles on the weekend and running short races.

I’d tell you that I also can’t decide if I want to claim my deferral for the February half marathon.

I hate to waste $$. The race cost a lot and the deferral cost $40.

A 5k seems so much more enjoyable.

TT: 2024 Mid-Year Review

Today’s topic is Your 2024 Mid-Year Review.

Wow, six months went by pretty quickly.

Things have not been perfect (what ever is) and so there’s definitely room for improvement.  Of course, some good things went down.

Running-Related:

  • 407 Miles

My annual goal is 1000 but I started the year with a sprained ankle but if I stay healthy and train for that full marathon, I may actually reach my goal.

My favorite miles were those with friends…

  • 7 Races (3 Half Marathons, 1 -10K, 3 – 5Ks)

Again, lower number than normal… Quality not quantity, right?

One of my favorites was when I skipped a half marathon and ran a new 5k in Florida instead (and met Jeannie Rice).

  • 4 Age Group Awards

Bridge the Gap 5k – 1st
Bacon Hill Bonanza 10k – 1st
Tropicool 5k – 1st
Valley Cats Father’s Day Home Run 5k – 2nd

None were speedy but it depends who shows up…

  • Walked 3 Races

However, one was a free local race, one was free since I was a mentor and so I only walked ONE serious race.

Run for Women 5k (7 of us walked)

  • DNSed 4 Races

Three were also free local races so only ONE big DNS (for the 2nd year in a row).

  • Mentored 2 Running Groups

STEM (victims of Domestic Violence)

Race for Women Training Challenge group

It’s always rewarding to help others reach their goals.

Fitness-Related:

  • 0 Bike Rides

Correction, maybe a few on the stationary bike early in the year when I couldn’t run.

  • 60 Gym Visits

When I was home, I tried to go to the gym on non-running days which was usually 3 times each week.

  • 3 Hiking Mondays

Working full-time so no longer always an option to have the day off. But it’s a great alternative to running and an opportunity to visit new places.

  • 2 Trail Thursdays

The ARE trail series has just begun….

Again when I’m in town, I like to walk them with friends

  • Many Walking Tuesdays

Whenever I’m in town and have friends available, there was walks on the local rail trail…

Non-Running Related:

  • Many visits to NYC

Mostly due to work and always an opportunity to connect with friends, see a Broadway show and/or visit a park or museum.

  • Two Florida Vacations

In February, I visited friends on the East coast (Delray Beach)

And in May, I traveled with tennis friends to the West coast (Naples)

And I am working on my “word” for 2024:

Weekly Run Down for 6.23.24-6.30.24: Just a Quick One

That is a work trip to NYC… only 2 nights.

Last Week –

  • Sunday – I took an early train down to NYC with a friend.

It was hot AF but we managed to have a nice time hanging out on Governor’s Island.

She left that evening to visit my college roommate in the Hamptons.

Too bad I was stuck working.

  • Monday – After a long work day in Jamaica Queens, I returned to my hotel, changed into running clothes and headed by subway to Central Park.

It was so windy but it felt great compared to the heat and humidity of the day before.

  • Tuesday – Just a work day and then the train home.
  • Wednesday – I dragged myself out of bed and went for a run in the ‘hood before work.

  • Thursday – Another early morning run… today I had more time and drove to the rail trail…

And then after work, I met up with my tennis friends.  This month we went to a Salt Den and then out to dinner.

Honestly, not impressed with the Salt Den but glad I tried it…

  • Friday – Back to the gym before work and just mah jongg (at my house) in the evening.
  • Saturday – Long Run Day and Brunch.

Still run/walking a leisurely 6 miles before I get serious with marathon training…

Woke up to pouring rain so decided to wait a little while and then rain or shine, just do it…

and the rain stopped!!!

  • Sunday – Gym and boating (weather dependent)

This Coming Week on the Run – 

  • Monday – run 
  • Tuesday – run, walk
  • Wednesday – GYM, walk
  • Thursday – DAY OFF – Firecracker 4 race

Runfessions for June 2024

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1.I runfess…

I complain about my lack of speed… A LOT!

I used to think that a finish time for a 5k was good for me if it were 27:xx.

When that stopped happening, I resigned myself to at least a sub 30 min. finish.

Guess what?  That may never happen again.

And I realized that it doesn’t bother me (much) anymore.

Racing is just fun!!

And so I plan to continuer even if I have to walk a race.

2. I runfess…

I decided to skip a race that I have enjoyed in the past due to working on Sunday and having to change our boating day to Saturday (race day).

Of course, then there was a post on FB:

I also wanted to give a shout-out to those who have run all 4 editions of the race…Among the women are Meghan Bethel, Darlene Cardillo, Laura Clark, Jane Labombard, Jamie Lemiszki, and Jill Pederson.

Definitely FOMO on my part especially since due the weather forecast, WE DIDN’T GO UP TO THE LAKE!!

3. I runfess…

Speaking of races… (always)

I already registered for a December 10K.

Is that risky after running a full marathon and so far in advance?

It will be a race-cation in Tampa, Florida. No matter what it will be fun!!

2024 Valley Cats Father’s Day Home Run 5k

ValleyCats Father's Day Home Run 5K :: Hudson-Mohawk Road Runners Club

June 15, 2024 – 9 AM

This race was not on my radar.  I was planning a long run and taking a break from racing.

Then my friend (as she did the past two years) asked me to do it with her.  How could I say No?

This was the 6th time that I had run this race.  I ran it in 2010!!

Yes, 14 years ago! I ran with Amanda, a running friend at that time.

This is the race where I met new running BFF Mary. We ran many races together after that. When she eventually moved to Palm Springs, I visited her twice.

Then I ran it again in 2016. I knew a lot of runners by then. And it was even more fun.

My time back in 2010 was 29:40 but improved to 28:47 in 2016.  Both years, I was 2nd in my age group (won a cap, then gloves).

2022? Anything could happen… no expectations.

The good news last year was that Carolyn didn’t turn 70 until later in the year.

I won my age group!!

But my time was slower: 29:11 (GT)

I was sure that I would have a PW this year since the finish times for the two 5ks I’ve run this year were in the 30s and I walked my recent 5k.

It’s all good. I’m thrilled when I am ABLE to race (especially in a year that included a sprained ankle and food poisoning).

My friend Heidi would be running it with me again. It is always fun to run a race with a friend.

Pre-Race Preparations and Activities:

Last weekend, I kept up my base and ran 6 miles

and then during the week, I ran a few short runs in NYC.

Marathon training does not start until July 9!! Besides, I had Monday off so if necessary, I could run my 6 mile long run then.

The truth was that after FIVE days working in NYC, I was exhausted.  The last thing I wanted to do was get up early on Saturday and run a race!!

Nevertheless, when I got home Friday night I put together my running outfit.. at least rain wasn’t forecast (like last year.)

Race Day:

I dragged myself out of bed and had my usual race breakfast (coffee and oatmeal)

The race was scheduled to start at 9 am and I got there around 8:15.

I immediately found Heidi and then got my shirt and bib.

In addition to the shirt, each runner got 4 tickets to a baseball game.  This year they added a ticket to the Strawberry and Wine Festival that was also held that day. Heidi and I traded tickets.

We milled around chatting with runners that we knew.

Then I spotted a runner that I had met in April while waiting for the H2H half to start.

She read this blog and decided to drive several hours from MA to run the race!  It was so fun to meet up again!!

We finally found the mascot for our annual pic.

With the breeze, it seemed like perfect weather for a race.

It had been about 6 weeks since my last 5k…

I had not been thrilled with my lack of speed and thought I would do some speed drills on a nearby track.  But nope… that never happened.

And then I, due to food poisoning, I was forced to walk my favorite 5k.

So again, my race goal was to finish happy and uninjured… zero expectations of a fast finish time…

As you can see from the pics above, this race began and ended at the home of the Valley Cats, a local baseball team that plays at Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy, NY, on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College.

There was no chip timing at the start line so I probably should have moved closer to the front (but I didn’t really think about it…)

Mile 1:

The race began in the parking lot and then we ran around the outside of the stadium before heading into the neighborhoods.

I wear my Garmin for races but as mentioned, it had been awhile.  As soon as I started it, it began updating the software.  Boo!

I played with it but there wasn’t much I could do.

I had started with several friends but they quickly got ahead and kept gaining on me as the race went on. My goal became to just keep them in sight and cut as many tangents as possible.

Eventually I was able to start my watch … I don’t remember much about the first mile other than I was dragging (and it felt warmer than it was due to the sun).

I think I willed myself to run and not walk…

Mile 2:

Finally there was a water stop around mile 1.5 so I walked a bit. The neighborhoods were rolling hills but nothing too bad until one steep one during the second mile.  I tried to run up it but the legs just weren’t having it. So I ran/walked it.

We repeated most of the course afterwards in 2022 so here are some pics from the neighborhoods 

It felt warm as I mentioned… occasionally we did feel the breeze but as usual, it was was when we were running into it.

My legs weren’t tired but I found myself out of breath… pollen, lack of sleep, out of shape?

And was there a mile 2 marker or did I miss it?

Mile 3-3.1:

A few more walks, I think. And then there was a welcome downhill during mile 3.

We finished the race inside the stadium and I gave it everything (which wasn’t much at this point).

I didn’t expect a course PR however I thought of finishing under 30 minutes. (I think that’s just a dream now…)

As I approached the finish line, 29 turned to 30 minutes and then 30 turned to 31.

Post Race Activities:

I may have come to accept my lack of speed because I was not really disappointed in my time.

I waited for Heidi to finish.

She was happy with how she did.

Then we headed for the food. There was a decent spread: popcorn, chips, cookies, bananas, apples, coffee, water. There was also a barbecue. I ate a hot dog and several cookies.

Everyone whom I talked to before the race seemed to have a good race. Some finished ahead of me and some after.

I checked the results and I did win an award – 2nd in my age group as did several of my friends.

And my friend from MA was the FIRST FEMALE!! Woo Hoo!

So we waited around for the awards ceremony (which took place after the kids race.)

Then off we went to brunch… I only had iced coffee. lol.

After showering and changing, I invited a friend to join me at the Strawberry and Wine Festival.

wine, sprits, music, ice cream, crafts… loads of fun and it was FREE!!

Additional Race Reflections:

When I dragged myself out of bed that morning, I was not feeling good about running this race.

As usually happens, I connected with some awesome people, ran a decent race and don’t regret it one bit.

Positives:

  • Ample parking.
  • Well marked course.
  • Lots of familiar faces.
  • 4 free tickets to a game as swag
  • 1 free ticket to the Strawberry and Wine Festival there
  • Interesting course (through the neighborhoods and finish in a baseball stadium)
  • Friendly and abundant number of volunteers.
  • Free photos
  • Decent post-race food
  • Cute age group award (my hubby likes it)

Negatives:

  • Gun time (not chip timed)
  • Long course (many said it was 3.2 this year)
  • My Garmin missed the beginning of the race
  • Hills (but don’t most races)
  • Unisex tee shirts (but there were tech material this year)

Would I recommend this race?

Yes. Yes. It’s a nice local race. And very well organized. Maybe someone will twist my arm to run it again next year. LOL.

Weekly Run Down for 6.16.24-6.23.24: Heating Up!!

Summer arrived with a vengeance… over 90 degrees most of the week.

Last Week –

  • Sunday – I had not been to the gym in a week so I was glad to be back on those machines

Not that warm out yet but a lovely day to be out on the lake…

my hubby is wearing the hat I won at the 5k the day before… we had a barbecue and I read anther good book (The Mystery Guest)

  • Monday – DAY OFF – Recovering from my week in NYC and started the day (before it got warm) with a run.  Because I skipped my long run on Saturday, I ran 3 miles in the ‘hood followed by 3 more with a friend.

I did lots of errands and got ready for my guest who would be arriving on Wednesday…

I visited with my granddaughter…

9 mos old!

and finally met up with my BFF for a walk.

  • Tuesday – A quick trip to the gym before work…

and a steamy walk with a friend after work.  Searching for shade, we walked at the Arboretum rather than the rail trail.

  • Wednesday – DAY OFF to celebrate Juneteenth…

Unfortunately the gym was closed so I went for a very early run along the river…

I was glad to have company to motivate me to get out of bed but it was slow (my friend’s knee was bothering her)

And then my guest arrived….

yup, another tuxedo kitten to keep Diamond (whom he hasn’t met yet) company… he is very sweet

I spent the afternoon cooling off in a running friend’s pool.

Plan B – Take my walk in the mall (due to the heat and threat of thunderstorms)

  • Thursday – I dragged myself out of bed to get in my run… there was no way I would run after work when it was almost 100 degrees. Again I had company…Yay!

there’s a Pride event this weekend

In the evening, I went to a wine tasting fundraiser… it was to raise $$ for the organization that saves stray kittens/cats (where I got my latest cat).

it was very warm there and we didn’t win any of the raffles but we tasted many local wines and enjoyed the appetizers and cat-themed desserts.

  • Friday – Back to the gym before work and just mah jongg in the evening.
  • Saturday – Long Run Day and Brunch.  Still not long and enjoying that it’s not.

But having FOMO because I usually run a race in Lake George today.

I skipped that race because the hubby and I had to re-schedule our boating on the lake to today.

no rain yet but sooooo humid!!

With all the thunderstorms in the area, we had to cancel boating for this weekend.

  • Sunday – Early train to NYC (for work).

My tennis friend is joining me and we plan to spend the day together before she heads out to the Hamptons.

Many of the races that I plan on running this summer are ones that I have run in past years and most are local.

Of course, if I didn’t have to start training for the NYC Marathon on July 8, there would be many more races!!

Weekly Run Down for 6.9.24-6.16.24: Back You Know Where…

Yup, FIVE days in NYC (for work)…

Lots of hours spent working…

Of course, I always try to squeeze in a run or some social activity in the evening.

As they say:  All work and no play…

Last Week –

  • Sunday – I was hoping to spend the day on the lake, reading and relaxing.

I woke up to pouring rain so I went to the gym.  I spent even more time there than normal (walking 15 laps on the track).

I bought sandwiches in case the rain stopped and we could spend some up on Lake George.

I know the garden and lawn needs rain but enough already…

And yes, the rain finally stopped.. a little breezy and cooler but no complaints on the views…

  • Monday – I took an early train to NYC (for work the next day.)

I checked into my hotel, changed into running clothes and headed out…

I planned on taking the subway uptown and then run back along the Hudson to meet my friend but there were delays so I ran there instead…

yes my running friend has a broken foot so we just spent hours chatting…

  • Tuesday – Long work day in Jamaica, Queens.

Instead of rushing back to Manhattan to run, I went to the theater…

it was excellent!!

  • Wednesday – Another long day in Jamaica.

Tonight I had dinner plans with a college friend.

Fortunately, she couldn’t meet until later so I got in a few miles near Hudson Yards and along the Hudson

my hotel went all out for Pride week

and then I met Cari (where she works) and we walked together to my college friend’s apartment…

  • Thursday – Still working all day in Jamaica…

I had dinner plans with a friend but they fell through… so I took advantage of the extra time and took the subway to the Harlem end of Central Park…

I just ran/walked around until the sun was going down…

  • Friday – After work, I rushed back to Manhattan to catch my train home.
  • Saturday – Father’s Day Home Run 5k.

Yes, I was pooped after the week in NYC but I’ve run this race with my friend Heidi the last few years

and without thinking, I signed up again.

I dragged myself out of bed and I was so glad that I did.  This small local race has so many perks: tech shirt, post race barbecue, nice age group prizes, 4 free tix to a baseball game, free ticket to the strawberry & wine festival…

And I bumped into so many runners that I knew…

though my time was a race PW, I came in 2nd in my age group… the hat was the prize

Afterward we joined our running friends (who did not race) for brunch (I only had iced coffee).

I gave Heidi my baseball tix and she gave me her festival ticket.

After I showered and changed, I spent the rest of the afternoon at the festival…

tasted so many delicious wines and spirits…

  • Sunday – Hopefully my regularly scheduled program: GYM, day on the lake

This Coming Week on the Run – 

  • Monday – DAY OFF, run, walk with BFF
  • Tuesday – GYM, walk with friends
  • Wednesday – DAY OFF, run, pool date
  • Thursday – run, Trail walk charity wine tasting
  • Friday – GYM, mah jongg
  • Saturday Long Run and Brunch, Boating
  • Sunday – train to NYC (AGAIN!)
