Tuesdays on the Run: Summer Clothing

Erika @ MCM Mama Runs hosts Tuesdays on the Run with April @ Run the great wide somewhere and Patty @ My no-guilt life

This week’s topic is: Summer Clothing

  • Shirts (or tanks) made of breathable fabric – no cotton.

Lululemon – one of my favs  (gift)

biggest-loser-5k

Target – another favorite

  • Skirts. I find them cooler than shorts and less chafing

from Target

  • Cap to keep the sun out of my face. It also keeps my (unruly) hair off my neck.

  • Sunglasses. My eyes are very sensitive to the sun and I wear contacts so this helps if it is breezy, as well.

  • Don’t forget that if you chafe, in the summer when you sweat, you chafe even more.

Happy Running! Any additions that you add to your summer running wardrobe?

This week, the theme is Five Things About Me:

1.  I never had a pet growing up. But now I have 4 cats. (I used to have 5.)

our cats?

Jerry – my favorite

2.  My favorite foods are pizza and ice cream. I have no self-control when it comes to these foods. (In other words, I stop eating them when there is no more left.)

Soft Serve Ice Cream (esp. coffee) with sprinkles

Soft Serve Ice Cream (esp. coffee) with sprinkles

3. I was a French major in college, spent my junior year in the south of France and used to be a French teacher for many years. I still love everything French. I have seen Les Miz at least 12 times. (My dream to run a race in France.)

creme brulee = happiness

especially desserts (and art, movies, etc.)

4. My birthday is the same day as Billy Joel’s. I have seen him in concert many times. We are also both from Long Island. (He actually was part of a band that sand at my friend’s sweet 16 party.)

5. My clothes (almost) always match. Neurotic.  I used to say about tennis: “If I don’t play good, at least I’ll look good.”  Beauty before fitness?

Tuesday on the Run: Injuries

Erika @ MCM Mama Runs hosts Tuesdays on the Run with April @ Run the great wide somewhere and Patty @ My no-guilt life

This week’s topic is “injuries.”

Certainly not a pleasant topic but I am happy to say that I AM NOT INJURED!!!! Yay!

So I will re-post from when I was recovering from a serious injury.  Hopefully it will help some runner out there who is injured now.

11 Good Things About Being Injured

If you are new to my blog, this was me during my 10 mile training run on Dec 29, 2011:

and then this was me for 2 months after that day (note the surgically repaired raised ankle on the left):

Five months later, I am on the road to recovery (I can walk without limping) and I want to say that it hasn’t been all bad:

  1. Less laundry – no running clothes or tennis clothes or yoga clothes (and sometimes all 3) to wash each day
  2. Fewer bags to carry to work – no running gear bag or tennis gear bag or yoga clothes bag to lug into work
  3. Easier to park your car – my handicap sticker came in handy cuz it’s free to park with it at the beach
  4. More time with friends and family – I now eat dinner with my hubby every evening
  5. Save money – no race fees, no gels to buy, my running shoes are not wearing out
  6. Learn something new – I now know how to knit
  7. Discover other ways to exercise – I walk at lunch and ride my bike on weekends (I never did this before…)
  8. Eat healthier – in order for my ankle to heal faster, I started taking vitamins, eating more fruits & veggies- I didn’t have to carb load so although I haven’t run in 5 mos, I haven’t really gained weight
  9. Get more sleep – no getting up early to run before work or to race on Sat, no coming home wired from tennis & staying up too late
  10. Teaches patience – I am NOT a patient person…I do things right away and I want instant results so I guess this was a test (I may have still failed, though)
  11. Find out who  your friends really are – I am truly blessed…I have received many cards, gifts, meals, loads of support, etc.

Happy Running! If you have been injured, can you add anything to the list?

Friday Five: 5 Ways to Beat the Heat

DC_linkup

Every Friday, three DC area bloggers Mary at Mar On the Run, Cynthia at You Signed Up For What?! and Courtney from Eat Pray Run, DC to host the Friday Five linkup.  Anyone can join with their own Friday Five post (yes, it must be a Friday Five!!)  They encourage you to visit other blogs on the linkup, comment, share and engage!

This week, the theme is Five Ways to Beat the Heat.

1: Run early in the Morning

That’s a no brainer but not as easy as you think.  If you work, like I do, you have to get up very early.  On the plus side, you can see the sun rise.

20140303-115743.jpg

If I lived in Florida and had this view, I would get up and run everyday. And I did when I was on vacation in Florida

heading out

my neighborhood – not so motivating

2: Run where there is shade.

Again, it is pretty obvious.  I afford the track in the summer.  It is too hot. Trails are my favorite.  Also, parts of the bike paths are shaded.

3.  Run near water.

Boy, do I wish I lived near the ocean.  But I am lucky that I go to the lake on the weekends and can jump in when I am done running.

when I am done running…

4. Run indoors on a treadmill.

If you belong to a gym where it is air-conditioned, this is a good idea when it is too hot outside.

Me personally, I do not.  Nor do I enjoy running on the treadmill.

dreadmill

watching my favorite TV shows on my iPad makes it slightly bearable

5. Wear appropriate clothing.

That means shirts (or tanks) made of breathable fabric – no cotton.  I like skirts. I find them cooler than shorts.  Wear a cap to keep the sun out of your face.  Wear sunglasses.  If possible, carry water (or plant is along your route.)

A Random Friday Five

This week I’m linking up with CynCourtney and Mar’s Friday Five for the first time.

This one is a freebie.  It’s a pick your own topic Friday.

So here we go:

1. SUMMER

I was a French teacher for 22 years.  I loved my job but decided to switch to a new discipline: technology.  Don’t get me wrong, I love all things techie, but it would have been so nice to be a runner when I was a teacher.

have the summer off and be able to run whenever and wherever = heaven

2. RUNNING PLAN

I am planless and it’s killing me.  I always plan everything especially running.  I don’t know when and what my next half marathon is.  As a result, I don’t have my long runs planned.

HM #7 plan

HM #8 plan

3. DIET

Speaking of half marathons, I am still eating like I am training for one. First, my training was the excuse.  Then it was my birthday celebrations followed by my trip to Florida.  Now it’s summer and I love ice cream.  I am lucky with the help of genetics, I am still thin but my clothes are TIGHT and I think there’s at least an extra 5 pounds there somewhere (actually I know where – my stomach, butt & hips)

my weakness

I was thinner when I started running. I had to give away those shorts in the photo below. Now I wear looser, longer running skirts. I am a faster and stronger runner (You can’t have everything…)

4. WEEKENDS

I work full-time and my weekends are precious.  So far we have been lucky.  The last few weekends, we have had gorgeous weather.  It has rained everyday this week. I still managed to squeeze in 3 runs between the raindrops. But this weekend, the forecast is for sunny and dry. YAY!

In between, doing household chores, I plan to be running and boating.

5. NYC

It’s no secret, I Love New York. I try to go there several times a year.

Broadway

the High Line

Christmas time

I was there in Oct, Nov and Dec but not since.

I am going back next Thursday – Can’t wait! I think we are going to Staten Island.

I still want to run or race in NYC  at some point!!

Happy Running! Have a great weekend!

Liebster Love

Thanks to 26.2 x 2 who nominated me for my second Liebster Award.

If you are not familiar with this award, here’s how it works:

The Liebster Award is an online award given by bloggers to bloggers who generally have a following of 200 readers or less. The rules are:

  1. You must link back to the person who nominated you
  2. You must answer the 10 Liebster questions given to you by the nominee before you.
  3. You must pick 10 bloggers to be nominated for the award (with a small following)
  4. You must create 10 questions for your nominees
  5. You must go to their blogs and notify the nominees

First, my answers to Lis & Steph’s questions:

Questions:

1. What is your preferred sport, and why do you love it so much?

It used to be tennis but that was before I discovered running. I love the energy that running gives me.  I love the feeling of accomplishment after I finish a run or a race.  I love that I can do it alone or with others, in different places and at almost any time of day. I love that it makes me feel YOUNGER!

2. Tell me about your worst running/fitness related injury.

If you are a faithful reader of my blog, you have heard about this many many times. My worst injury was slipping on the ice during a long solo run and breaking several bones in my ankle, which then required surgery. Besides being painful, there was a lot of doubt about whether or not I would be able to run again.  But I have…along with 8 screws and a plate, I have since completed many races including 2 half marathons.

3. What type of running/workout shoes do you wear? Would you ever try something else?

I currently wear Brooks Adrenalines. I have worn almost every brand and am still searching for the perfect shoe.  So yes, I would try something else.

4. How long have you been pursuing a healthy lifestyle for?

I would say for about 15 years. I was not health conscious or even thought about anything related to a sport until my mid 40’s. Then I started playing tennis and my life was tennis. I started running 6 years ago. I still play tennis once a week but now running is my focus and along with it, I am trying to eat healthy. (That’s a work in progress.)

5. Currently, what are your short term goals vs long term goals?

That’s a tough one.  In the short term, just run several times a week and stay healthy. In the long term, improve my 5K speed to where it was before my ankle injury, improve my half marathon time and work on upper strength and flexibility more.

6. Favorite running/workout gear (not including sneakers)?

It would have to be my Garmin. I love keeping track of my pace, split times and of course, for distance.

7. Finish this sentence: when I’m not running/working out, I’m…

thinking about when I will be running, racing or blogging about running/pacing. Sad, but true.

8. What was the last great book you read?

Eleven Minutes by Paolo Coelho (the author of The Alchemist).  A friend lent it to me and I loved it.

9. What’s your favorite healthy food/meal?

I love oatmeal.  I buy organic oats and add flax seed, brown sugar, raisins, etc.

10. And your favorite non-healthy food?

Ice Cream!!

Blogs I am Nominating for a Liebster Award:

  1. Rachel @ Darlin’ Rae
  2. Debi @ 14 in 2014
  3. Amy @ The Point One Will Getcha
  4. Pam @ We Run Disney
  5. Laurie @ 111LaLa Lane
  6. Jen @ Jen is Green
  7. Shawna @ Run This Apple
  8. Michael @ Slowly Tri-ing
  9. Jona @ Zeelemons
  10. Andrea @ Age Groups Rock

Questions My Nominees Need to Answer:

  1. What is your dream job?
  2. Vacation at the beach or city?
  3. What is your favorite food?

  4. Red or white wine?

  5. What is one thing you have accomplished on your bucket list?

  6. Morning person or night owl?

  7. If you could live anywhere for a year, where would it be?

  8. Favorite holiday and why?

  9. Favorite TV show?

  10. How do you relax?

Happy Running! Happy Blogging!

Girls Gone Sporty Ambassador

Girls Gone Sporty Ambassador
What is Girls Gone Sporty?

Girls Gone Sporty is an online editorial magazine and a social community for women dedicated to living and leading sporty lives. In addition to providing cutting-edge content, we’re committed to creating a support system for women who are striving to be their best selves.

If you want to know more, then check them out on FacebookTwitterInstagramYouTubeGoogle+, and Pinterest.

Also check out their website – http://www.girlsgonesporty.com/  There are lots of great articles about everything from yoga to recipes, running to fashion.

I am excited to join on as a Girls Gone Sporty Ambassador and be part of an amazing group of women who help motivate and are motivated to “live the sporty life.”
To keep things organized, they have divided the ambassadors into teams.  I am part of #TeamStellar.  I am overwhelmed already by the enthusiasm of the members on this team.
According their website:

Our Ambassadors form a network of sporty women who band together to focus on positive health. Studies have shown that: 1) healthy living is contagious, and 2) healthy living is not just about weight loss. While we recognize that achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is important, weight and appearance are not cornerstones of our belief system, and we want to encourage women everywhere to embrace whole health and an attitude of adventure – body, mind, spirit and lifestyle – right where they are now.

The Girls Gone Sporty Ambassador Program is designed to represent the general female population. We’re looking for women from all walks of life. We want walkers, runners, cyclists, climbers, lacrosse players, surfers, swimmers, slack liners, snowboarders… pretty much any sport or activity you can think of. We want women who share our values and outlook. We want women who are brand new to fitness and women who are fitness/sport professionals. The key for us is balance so that we can show our readers that we’re committed to embracing a wide audience.

There are currently over 550 ambassadors mostly aged 25-40. (14% are over 41.) I am honored to be selected to represent the “older” or maybe “oldest” fitness enthusiast.
If you are interested in becoming an ambassador, you can apply here.
