Happy Running! Any advice for not losing one’s mind while in pain and doing nothing!?

I was having a great run on a beautiful day. The day before my friend was trying to talk me into running a marathon. I was thinking about my plans for 2012 and which half marathons to register for.
I saw a patch of ice. I had walked around it on the way out and so I walked around it again on the way back. This time, my foot got caught in the mud and my ankle twisted, I fell and landed on my ankle. I heard it break. It was hanging sideways…sorry if this grosses you out.
I couldn’t walk. I was a mile from my car and for some strange reason, I stupidly left my phone in my car.
I started to crawl. The pain was incredible and I sat down on the path and I prayed that someone would pass by.
They did! A couple from Cali riding bikes. They were great. They called 911, called my husband, gave me a coat and stayed until the ambulance came.
That was another story. The path was below the road. The EMTs wanted me to hop up a ravine to the road using my good foot.
A better plan was to get me in a wheelchair and roll me to the parking lot where they could then get me on a stretcher.
Finally xrays at the hospital revealed a large bone broken into two (fibia?) and on the other side, medial lateral broken in 2 places. YIKES!!!
They tried to push it back into place to cast it without surgery (You can imagine how that hurt!) but they then decided that it would heal better if they did surgery the next day.
And they did – one plate on one side and 2 screws on the other…lots of pain meds and lots of pain.
After 2 nights in the hospital, I am home.
Two weeks of bed rest – ankle elevated with ice and then back to the doctor. It looks like at least 8 weeks in a cast and then more time in a walking cast and then PT.
In other words, a long time without running, without tennis, without yoga..
I know I will heal. I will run again. At least it is not summer. (I am faking optimism here.)
I have great friends. FB posts, emails and texts have made me feel blessed.
They have even brought me over food (my hubby does not cook!)
Happy Running! Please send me quick healing vibes!!!
As you know I was loving my time off… Monday and Tuesday were perfect.
Wednesday was a rest day meaning no running but lots of things to do…errands, grocery shopping, laundry, nails…
The evening was spent with my tennis friends at our annual holiday party.
Lots of eating & drinking…entertainment…Chinese gift exchange:
My friends are super. We don’t play tennis together much but we always have fun when we are together.
Thursday, it was COLD but sunny. I had planned a long run for the weekend but I didn’t want to do it Saturday and ruin our New Year’s Eve dancing and we were would be staying over in Lake George after so Sunday could be problematic.
I decided on a mid-week long run and I planned to do 10 miles – my longest run since the Half on Nov 6.
I headed to the NIsky Bike Trail.
I ran 1 mile west and then 1 mile back to get a Gu and put on a hat.
Then I ran 4 miles east. It was a picture perfect day. Just a little breezy and cold.
I turned around and headed back to my car to finish my 10 mile run.
One last photo:
Then it happened…
Happy Running! Stay tuned…
GOALS:
Happy Running! What are your goals for January? How did your December go?
I think it’s important to have goals but not let them run your life. So here are my 12 running goals for the year:
Happy Running! Did you set any interesting running goals for 2012?

Last May, I ran Sean’s Run for the first time. My friend Mary talked me into it. It was a big (1500 runners) local race but a very hilly race.
Look who is now pictured on the 2012 race brochure – http://www.seansrun.com/pdfs/2012Flyer_spread.pdf
That would be me…(at least they cut out my fat thighs!!). I wasn’t planning on doing this race again…but maybe I should.
The funny thing is that last year’s brochure had Mary’s photo on it (from the first year she ran the race.)
Happy Running!
Not that I don’t love working but I can get used to this!
Usually when I take off from work, it is to go somewhere.
The week between Christmas and News Years, I am off (though I was tempted to go somewhere warm), and we decided to stay home. And I have nothing to do except:
I may do more of the above the rest of the week but I really should do grocery shopping, laundry, cooking, cleaning, re-organgizing…
Then I won’t mind going back to work on Monday!!! Ha Ha!
Happy Running! Do you have the week off? What are you going with your free time?

A whole lot of eating going on..
Dinner out on Thursday to celebrate a friend’s birthday. Lunch out on Friday with a friend from work. Dinner out Christmas Eve with the hubby and then brunch at a friend’s on Christmas Day. (More lunches & dinners out planned for next week also…Holy pounds gained!!)
On the running front – my knee is still painful to bend but doesn’t hurt when I run. I ran 5 miles on the Corning Trail Thursday. 50 degrees on the first day of winter!!!
On Saturday, I went to the Nisky Trail and ran 8 miles. This time it was 25 degrees outside ….brrrr but at least the sun was out. This was my 2nd time on the trail and I decided to go East this time. Unfortunately I didn’t bring my camera but I like it better in this direction. I definitely need a lot of work on stamina…I am not used to running long distances and struggled. I forced myself to run the last mile as the fastest pace of the run.
We are closed where I work so I have next week off. That means I don’t have access to a treadmill. I hope the weather is kind to me…
We don’t do a lot of elaborate celebrating of the holidays since the kids are grown. We have a small artificial tree. I have a lot of snowmen around. I also celebrate Chanukah. I picked out my own gift – an iPad 2 & a laptop. My hubby was thrilled since he HATES to shop. I on the other hand, love to shop & bought him a few things. Most of my shopping & gift giving was directed at Amanda (the girl I mentored) and her sons. She has really struggled financially this year and doesn’t even have a permanent place to live.
We started Christmas Day at a brunch with my tennis friends.
Then we went to give gifts to Amanda & her sons Richard & Matthew.

Here are the GOALS that I set for 2011:
