Monster Scramble 10K Race Report

mslg

The Monster Scramble 5K, 10K, and 1 mile family-fun stroll is just what you’ve been waiting for – a Halloween themed, chip-timed course through one of our spooky sites. It’s sure to make your heart (and feet) race!

As I already mentioned, I signed up for this race after I broke my foot and I thought that I would defer my half marathon until next year. But I didn’t defer and ran 131. miles last Sunday.

This race took place in Lake George and started at 12:15 pm.  I decided to dress like a Parrot Head and have fun with this race.  I knew nothing about the course other than Lake George races are always hilly.

My hubby wanted to go up to the marina and winterize our boat, So he offered to drop me off and then continue up to Bolton Landing and pick me up on his way home.

I planned to run the race, change my clothes and hang out in the village with my friend Kathi.

I had no goals for this race. Just enjoy the day!

When I got up, the weather was chillier and windier than I hoped.  I changed my outfit several times but settled on the first outfit – a skirt and shirt with compression socks.  Hopefully it would warm up.

My hubby was itching to leave so I got to the race about an hour early.  The race began and ended at the Conference Center by Fort William Henry. I got my bib & chip and walked around a little looking at the beautiful lake.

20131019-193852.jpg

I bumped into a lady who seemed to be by herself also.  We chatted.  She hadn’t raced in a while. Though it was a small crowd.  Everyone was in costume and very enthusiastic.

20131019-193838.jpg

Me as a “parrot head”..it may look cute but I could hardly see out of those glasses, the hat kept falling off & the lei kept choking me…

Around noon, we lined up and about 5 minutes later (while I was chatting), the race started. (Early??)

The first mile looped around the fort and the Conference Center.  And yes, I encountered my first hill.  I decided to be smart and take it slow so I could finish stronger than I did at the half marathon last week.

During mile 2 is when things started to go bad.  The course was poorly marked.  There were few volunteers on the course.  Just a few passing out candy.  They didn’t know the course either.  So I and everyone else just followed the flow.  And then we were told that we went the wrong way so had to go bad and turn around. Great …did I really want to run longer??

Next the course headed uphill… gradually but then it got very STEEP.  I mean I had a hard time walking up it.  Instead of looping around and going down it, they wanted you to go up it a second time.

That was fine except that many people were only doing it once. (The lady I was chatting with before the race claimed that she wasn’t as well others who had made the wrong turn.)

But I did and then headed back toward the start.

Then the 5kers turned right to finish and the 10kers turned left.  I so wanted to quit and do the 5k.

But I didn’t and continued on. I ran the rest of the race with two young girls.  The rest of the race was a repeat of the 5k we had just run.

However at this point, the volunteers had all quit.  Just one at around mile 4.5 who had water.  (It was warm and boy was I thirsty.  I also ate a gel.) The volunteer also told us that there were only 8 runners ahead of us. (Really there were 5.)  But there were NO runners behind us!! (Actually there was 1 that I never saw.)

The 3 of us stayed together so we wouldn’t get lost.  When we got to the top of the BIG hill, they said they weren’t doing it twice and just turned around and started running down.

I looked at my Garmin and realized that if we did the 2 loops, we would be way over 6 miles, more like 7. If I didn’t, we would just be a little short.

So not wanting to be last and run by myself, I followed them and ran/walked to the finish line.

well, I crossed around 1:03:18.  I ran almost 6 miles.  I’ll not count this a 10K PR – just exercise and money given to fight MS.

done!

done!

My friend Kathi was waiting for me at the finish.  We hung around for awards and had some cider and donuts.

ag

And yes, I won for my age group.  (and I was the only one in my AG!!)

So this will be a race that I won’t repeat.  Next year, I’ll do the Great Pumpkin Challenge 10K in Saratoga.

After the race, Kathi & I walked around the village and then back to her house.

Kathi & I & Lake George

My hubby had finished winterizing our boat and was there with Kathi’s hubby.  It was a nice day so we decided to take a drive to the top of Prospect Mountain.

We stopped at the all the viewing stops for pics .

20131019-193937.jpg

Then we took a bus to the top (because cars weren’t allowed.)

20131019-193957.jpg

We decided to end the day with dinner at a restaurant called the View (because you have a great view of the lake.)  The food was great too.

So I am glad that I ran that race so that I could spend a delightful day with my hubby and friends.

Happy Running! Have you ever run a race just for fun?

I signed up for this race after I broke my foot and I thought that I would defer my half marathon until next year. I also love Lake George and the race is there.

Well, I ran the half marathon on Sunday and now I have another race on Saturday.

This sounds like a fun race.  I signed up for 10K.  I want to keep up my weekend miles so I’ll be ready for the 15K on Nov 10.

I’ll probably dress like a  “ParrotHead”  because it is easy & I can run in some version of it

Halloween in Lake George

here we are as “parrot heads” a few years ago.

I have no goals for this race.  It will be hilly I am sure.  I will be running in a costume & my legs may be tired.  I hope to relax and have fun.

Happy Running!  Have you ever run in a costume?

Helper’s Fund 10K Race Report

hf2013

Unfortunately, my friend who owns a house in Chestertown had someone staying there (her son on his honeymoon) so I couldn’t stay there last night as I did last year.

house

imagine…the honeymooners got preference over me!

So I got up early this morning and headed up North.

It was cloudy, chilly, breezy and very HUMID. At least it wasn’t raining. As I drove, the sky brightened.

I wore my new running skirt & compression socks.  I opted for short sleeves but brought a jacket & a long sleeved shirt, just in case.

???????????????????????????????

I parked in the Grand Union parking lot and walked across the street to get my racing packet.

a previous year’s start

This was a small community race – about 200 in the 5K and less than 100 in the 10K. I got there early enough to use the real restrooms and chat with some runners.

Both the 5k and 10K runners start together and then separate.  There was no timing mat at the start so I tried to stand not too far back.

I started with the lady was chatting with but soon realized that she was slower than me (there were only a few others that slow.)

hf10k

me at the beginning

As I mentioned the course is hilly…real hilly.

I wasn’t gunning for a PR so I just took it slow.

hf 10k

I ran until the first hill and then walked up it and the others as well as through the water stops. Besides the hills, this was a beautiful course.  You ran through the back roads and it would have been awesome if the foliage was at peak.

Around mile 3, you ran into the 5k runners but actually it was the ones who were walking.  Then you separated again.

I finished the first 5k around 33 minutes.  I was pleased considering how much I walked.  I could have pushed myself but I am used to running on FLAT roads and I didn’t want another injury.  Besides, I wanted to add 5 miles to my run after the race.

Around mile 4, when I was walking, a runner caught up to me and we started chatting.  This was the only boring part of the course – a LONG uphill on a main road.  I ran because she was and she thanked me for getting her through it.  (She also thought we were in the same age group.  She was 45 & I 60. Made me feel good.)

Eventually the hills got steeper and I let her go ahead.  But I stayed behind her and finished right behind her.

I stopped at all the water stops but I had no fuel and I definitely needed it around mile 5.  But I gathered my strength and finished strong.

20130921-183456.jpg

I wasn’t last and finished at: 1:06:10 which was a PR by over 2 minutes.  This is my 3rd 10K.  The 1st was while I was recovering from my broken ankle and the 2nd was last winter on a pretty flat course.

happy to see the finish line

happy to see the finish line

I was pleased.  My 2nd half of the race was about the same as the first and I know that I can do better.

My Splits:

  • mile 1 – 9:56
  • mile 2 – 10:37
  • mile 3 – 11:41 – water stop
  • mile 4 – 10:59
  • mile 5 – 11:41 – water stop
  • mile 6 – 10:50
  •         .2 –   7:42

I had some refreshments (all home-made – cookies, fritters, breads, bagels, etc) and stuck around for awards (and it took forever) since there was a chance because last year, there was NO ONE in my age group.

hf10k-4

Actually there were 2 this year so I came in 2nd.  Hooray for AG awards.

I had planned to run 4.8 more miles today.  Boy, did I not feel like it.

I told myself that my reward would be lunch in Schroon Lake and maybe a cool purchase at the Expo.

I drove to familiar territory – near my friend’s house and parked my car. I ran/walked 5 more miles admiring the scenery.

???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????

As you can see, the leaves are still pretty green.  My run was painful…my feet & back ached but I got it done.

When I was done, I drove to Schroon Lake.  There were marathoners and half marathoners everywhere.

???????????????????????????????

I went to the expo but only bought some energy gels and a race belt. (I saw many familiar faces from the race I just did.  In fact, the women who won the 10K was going to be running the marathon tomorrow.)

belt

it has 2 pouches, holds 4 gels and your bib

Then I ate at my favorite restaurant  a French creperie.

20130921-184716.jpg

apples, walnuts, raisins & maple cream – yum!

On the way home, I stopped at our marina but no one was out on their boats – TOO WINDY!  And then at my friend’s house in Lake George (her hubby just had back surgery.).

A long full day.  The highlight was my race, of course.

I think I made the right decision about the race.  I love scenic courses,  The weather turned out to be great (just a little windy but there was hazy sunshine all day and NO RAIN!) I had a PR and got an award plus got in my miles.

Happy Running! How was your weekend?  Any running or racing?

Three Things Thursday

ttt
In this case, it is THREE RACES.

I have 3 races that I can do this weekend.

1.  The first is on Friday night.  I have done it twice before (2010 & 2009) and it is flat. The race course is NOT scenic (highway and rundown apts.) It is only a 5K so I would have to do my long run on Sunday.

acr

Sept. 20, 2013

2.  The second one is on Saturday morning.   It is in Chestertown (1.5 hrs away) and I did the 5K last year.  It is VERY HILLY. It is a 5K or a 10K so I could add miles to the 10K and get in my long run. it is scenic and I could go to nearby Schroon Lake to go to the expo for the Adirondack marathon. I would have Friday night for mah jongg and Sunday free to go boating. (The weather forecast is iffy too 😦 )

hf2013

3. The third one is on Sunday morning.  It is nearby and flat.  I did the 5K several years ago. I could do the 10K and add miles to get in a long run. The course of the 10k is 2 loops of the 5k and not too interesting.

dr

Sept 22, 2013

So which one will I choose???

Most likely #2.  Why do something something close & flat where the weather is nice??

I love a challenge. I am hoping that the rain will hold off until the afternoon. I plan to run a nice slow race and add additional scenic miles to complete 11 miles for the day.

happy to be racing

a goofy picture from last year’s race

My goals for the race are: to finish, walk up the hills, remain uninjured and of course, have fun.

Listen to Orville Rogers and Strive to be Above Average

Orville Rogers’ 5 Rules for Running Forever

  1. As far as training goes, listen to your body. Don’t go too fast or too far.
  2. When you’re upping your training, increase your speed or distance, not both. If you overtrain, you risk your next competition.
  3. Look at the records and then make a goal for yourself that you think you can do.
  4. Visualize, and when you visualize, picture yourself breaking those records.
  5. Never give up.

Oh yeah—and stretch.

orville_rogers_500

at age 95, he has set 7 world age group records this year

Read the complete article here.

I agree with his advice especially #1 & #2 (except that I forget to stretch).

1.   It is really important when injured to know when to run, how fast, how far and how often. That means listening to your body and knowing when aches & pains are serious or just part of life.  It means being patient… (I am not good at this!!)

2.  I usually concentrate on distance.  Being older, I need to build up my stamina and fitness level.  I need to be careful about overdoing.  I used to worry about speed when I only ran 5ks.  I also did more speed workouts when I was injury-free.   Now I seem to always be coming back and I am glad to be running.

3.  My goals in the past have been PR or win a Age Group award.  Again when you are constantly in recovery mode, PRing is NOT realistic. So a realistic goal may be to be ABOVE AVERAGE.  It seems that I am way above average with regards to “AGE” and I am usually above average in my 5K time.  So my new goal is to be above average in my 10k and half marathon times.

and I NEVER GIVE UP!!!!

Happy Running! Do you have any other running advice? Are you “Above Average?”
