Joy Johnson, age 86, at her 25th consecutive NYC Marathon

Joy Johnson, the next day on the Today show

She didn’t begin running until retiring from teaching at age 56. When a friend suggested they attempt the 1988 New York City Marathon, a passion was born.

“When I crossed that finish line in Central Park, I just knew this is what I would do the rest of my life,” Johnson said. “Running makes you feel good. It’s energizing. You sleep better at night. And the best part for me is you can eat anything you want.”

“I’ll be at the back of the pack, but I don’t mind,” she said. “I just praise the Lord I can get out of bed each morning and run. A lot of people my age are in wheelchairs.”

“What’s keeping us going right now is that she was doing what she loved,” Boydston (her daughter) said Tuesday. “She wanted to die with her running shoes on, and she did.”

Happy Running! Do you know anyone else as inspiring as Joy?

Love to Run?

Yes, I do and guess what I did today??

I made an impromptu decision and registered for another race.

While running up a hill during the Helper’s Fund 10K, I chatted with a runner named Heidi.  We then became friends on Facebook and she encouraged me to register for this race.  The lowest price deadline was today so I had no time to think about it.

Hence, I will be running a half marathon in Philly on March 30, 2014!  Yikes! (At least Heidi registered too.)

Slow Running Week

aug25-30

Yes, it is pathetic.

My excuses: it rained on Mon, I had a hair appt on Tues, I went to the US Open on Wed, I took my friend on to dinner on Thurs.

Except for Wed, I could have gotten up early and run before work…but I stayed in bed.

At least I am walking during the am break and at lunch.

Today I knew that I was going to the movies in the evening so I got up early and I RAN!  It wasn’t so bad except for the 95% humidity.

I have lost my running mojo.   If anyone has seen it, please return it to me soon!

Happy Running!  Ever have one of those weeks?

Back to the question- AM I TRAINING?

I really haven’t decided.

My friend remarked that I am “very Zen.”  This what I posted on Facebook:

I have realized a few things: injuries are a part of life, recovery gets more difficult with each one but you just keep moving even if it is at a slower pace.

That being said, my runs are VERY VERY SLOW!  My fitness level is zilch. My motivation is lacking. But I keep plodding along.  I will not quit because starting over is so painful.

Some days I say: I WILL RUN 13.1 MILES on OCTOBER 13 if it kills me.

Other days, I say: Who needs the pressure of having to do long runs each week.  I have run 6 half marathons.  I have proved to myself that I can.  My friends are already impressed. I will just run for fun and compete in 5Ks.

Right now, I am keeping things open.

The answer is — I AM SORTA TRAINING. SORTA MAYBE. MAYBE NOT.

Happy Running! Are you training?

Lacking the Long Run Motivation

to run o

Ever since my March half marathon, I have been trying to get my speed back.  As a result, I have been racing 5Ks and mostly running 3 miles with an occasional 4 or 5 miler thrown in.

I definitely feel more confident about my speed (although it isn’t or may never be totally back).

20130504-075720.jpg

So now, I need to run longer.

And I can’t find the motivation!!

I have a 10 mile race on June 23 and a 15K on July 28.  I also have a Half Marathon on October 13.

Long slow distance

The problem is that I can’t find the time on the weekends!!

It is easy to squeeze in 3 miles and then do other things.  Long runs take time!

may 5

can only spend time with Amanda & her sons on the weekend.

lg3

the boating season is too short and too expensive not to take advantage of it every weekend that the weather is nice (it is the one thing my hubby & I do together …)

I guess that’s why I usually run 5ks in the summer and train for long races in the winter.

In the meantime, I am going to have to get creative about fitting in the long runs this summer – take mornings off from work, run after work, etc. (and the weather better cooperate!!)

But I will not get injured by running a long race untrained.

Happy Running!  Anyone else have the long run motivation blues??

Running Apps For Your iPhone

iphonerun

I was recently contacted by Jessica Clark asking me to share her blog post “10 iPhone apps to help you train for your first marathon (http://www.kenneymyers.com/blog/10-iphone-apps-to-help-you-train-for-your-first-marathon/) on my site.

listening to tunes on my iPhone

“Of course,” I replied.

I use my iPhone for music and my Garmin 205 for distance and pace but I have downloaded many running apps* that I am been meaning to try. (My problem is that I am not good about keeping my phone charged & the GPS on it uses a lot of battery power.)

Q is for Quotes

Amanda Winslow- running quotes
Original artwork of Runners Feed Freelance Writer- Amanda Winslow

“Me and running don’t always see eye to eye. Some days it hurts more than others. But that doesn’t mean I don’t do it. I deal with it and I keep running because not everything that is good for you always feels good for you. Every day is the day.”

“The gun goes off and everything changes… the world changes… and nothing else really matters.”Patti Sue Plummer

“Running is a big question mark that’s there each and every day. It asks you, ‘Are you going to be a wimp or are you going to be strong today?”– Peter Maher, Irish-Canadian Olympian

“I tell our runners to divide the race into thirds. Run the first part with your head, the middle part with your personality, and the last part with your heart.” – Mike Fanelli

“I always loved running…it was something you could do by yourself, and under your own power. You could go in any direction, fast or slow as you wanted, fighting the wind if you felt like it, seeking out new sights just on the strength of your feet and the courage of your lungs.” –Jesse Owens

“In running, it doesn’t matter whether you come in first, in the middle of the pack, or last. You can say, ‘I have finished.’ There is a lot of satisfaction in that.”Fred Lebow, New York City Marathon co-founder

Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out of it what you put into it.” Oprah Winfrey

“Racing teaches us to challenge ourselves. It teaches us to push beyond where we thought we could go. It helps us to find out what we are made of. This is what we do. This is what it’s all about.”  –PattiSue Plumer, U.S. Olympian

“Believe that you can run farther or faster. Believe that you’re young enough, old enough, strong enough, and so on to accomplish everything you want to do. Don’t let worn-out beliefs stop you from moving beyond yourself.” John Bingham, running speaker and writer

“You also need to look back, not just at the people who are running behind you but especially at those who don’t run and never will… those who run but don’t race…those who started training for a race but didn’t carry through…those who got to the starting line but didn’t in the finish line…those who once raced better than you but no longer run at all. You’re still here. Take pride in wherever you finish. Look at all the people you’ve outlasted.” – Joe Henderson

“Whether you believe you can or believe you can’t, you’re probably right.” -Henry Ford

“Running should be a lifelong activity. Approach it patiently and intelligently, and it will reward you for a long, long time.” -Michael Sargent

“Remember the feeling you get from a good run is far better than the feeling you get from sitting around wishing you were running.” -Sarah Condor

run4boston

“Running is not, as it so often seems, only about what you did in your last race or about how many miles you ran last week. It is, in a much more important way, about community, about appreciating all the miles run by other runners, too.” – Richard O’Brien
