This week, the theme is Five Things That Make Me Happy

1. Being on my boat with my hubby on Lake George

It is so beautiful, peaceful, relaxing.  It’s my weekend place to be.

5. Playing tennis outdoors.

It’s free.  It’s close to home.  Love being outdoors in the fresh air.

GOTR & Mother’s Day bRUNch 5k Recap

This was my new volunteer gig.

I signed up to be a Running Buddy for our local GOTR program.

Here’s what it involved:

The Running Buddy provides encouragement and support to their buddy throughout the course of the season by sharing weekly notes of encouragement. These notes can be emailed or delivered to their buddy’s Head Coach.

The Running Buddy acts as a personal cheerleader for their buddy by attending the practice 5k and the end of season 5k.

The Running Buddy completes the 5k with their buddy and expresses support and enthusiasm for her accomplishment!

Girls on the Run Capital Region is a 10-week afterschool program for girls in grades 3-8 that uses running and physical activities to teach life skills and help girls develop a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.

The 6 sites are located in Albany, Rensselaer and Schenectady counties. I volunteered as a running buddy at Elsmere, an elementary school near my home.

This spring’s 10-week season started the week of March 9th, concluded the week of May 18th.

I was paired up with Rebecca who was 10 years old and in 5th grade.  That was all I knew about her.

So each week, I wrote her a motivational letter about running and how hard it may seem and about not giving up etc. etc.

The Practice 5K was be held the last two weeks of April at the respective schools.

Mine took place on April 30. That was the day that I finally met Rebecca.

As with girls that age, she was with her friends and didn’t seem too excited to meet me. (I was told later that she was really loved getting my letters.)

We lined up together to run the practice 5K. And then she took off with a friend and the coach like a “bat out of hell.” I caught up with her to chat and found out that she is a runner and she already did the program last fall.  That meant that she already had run a 5k and besides that, she was super FAST. (She obviously didn’t need my weekly motivational messages.)

So what I thought would be a slow run/walk had me running as fast as I could to keep up with her.

And I did and she and her friend (who runs track) won.

10604055_359737937568198_1484664231384016226_o

they are on the upper right pic

Then we hung out and had snacks and waited for all the other girls to finish. (I also discovered that the assistant coach was a student at the law school where I work.)

11169598_359737930901532_5871848042163271385_o

I was a little disappointed. But when she left with her father, she gave me a big hug and said see you next Sunday. That made it worth it.

Rebecca is on the left

The Final 5K was held on May 10th in Central Park, Schenectady. This was the Mother’s Day 5K that I was planning to run. I thought that it would be non-competitive so I signed up for a race the day before. (Little did I know that my running buddy would be a speedster. Oy!)

As I have mentioned, I have run this race once before.

motherday13a

in 2013 and I even won my age group

I had to arrive early to meet up with 80 or so GOTR participants, their coaches & running buddies for a group photo.

IMG_5725

There were 75 girls plus their buddies and their coaches.  Everyone was in green but I eventually did find Rebecca.

10917256_361783967363595_7880664523982825473_o

After we took the group photo, I quickly ditched my green cotton shirt.  It was warm and VERY HUMID.

IMG_5729

Finally we lined up to start the race.

IMG_5726

I wasn’t sure how things would play out.  Would she be faster than me or vice versa. Would we stay together??

Because of my very sore, swollen scraped knees (You can get the gory details from yesterday’s race recap), I knew that I couldn’t keep up with her.  I said “Wait for me at the finish.” I am sure she was happy enough to run with her friend and the coach.

So the race began and off they ran.  I quickly lost sight of them.

I was stuck in the middle of green, many walking etc.  It was slow going but that was good.

Soon it thinned out and I was able to run and my shoe came untied. (Do I have a black cloud over my head?)

I tied it and continued on. Then my band-aids were coming off one by one.  I finally stopped and took them all off.

md5kcourse

The course was pretty varied – around the pond, through the woods, around the lake, etc.

But as I mentioned, it was quite warm so I stopped at the first water stop around mile 1.

Mile 2 was through the woods. I was very careful of the roots and uneven turf so not to have a repeat of yesterday.

Then for mile 3 we ran back in the park.  That’s when I caught up with Rebecca and her friend.  They had obviously gone out too fast and had run out of steam.  I tried to coax them on.  “You don’t want this old lady to beat you, do you?” I yelled.

But they were not interested. So I ran on and kept looking back to see if they were behind me.

Finally, I decided to just finish and wait for them at the finish line.

I also was tired and my knees were aching but after one last walk, I sprinted through the finish line.

Over 30 minutes!? WTF?

I haven’t done that since I was recovering from a broken something.

In fact I was faster yesterday when I walked up several hills and fell.

I guess this this old gal has lost her speed.  At least, for now.

About a minute or so later, the girls crossed, running as fast as they could.

IMG_5727

IMG_5728

They were so happy and I gave Rebecca her GOTR finishers medal.

Then I went back inside and bumped in the older ladies that I see all the time. We chatted and headed for the food.

There was an awesome food display. In addition to cookies, bagels, bars, pastries, bananas, chocolate milk, etc.

I didn’t want to eat too much since I was planning to go out for lunch at 3 pm.

We waited around for the awards.  Surprisedly, I came in third and actually won something this time.

IMG_5731

That made me feel a little better about my performance.

My only goal was to have fun and finish uninjured.  And I did!!

Splits:

mile 1 – 9:45
mile 2- 9:52
mile 3 – 9:25
.14 –  8:51

Garmin time – 30:09

It was not chip timed.  They just collected the bottom of the bibs.

I rushed home to get ready to go out for my birthday dinner.  I decided that I wanted to go up to Bolton Landing and eat with a view of Lake George.

Afterwards, we drove to our marina and hung out on the deck with friends. All in all, a pretty good day.

Run for the Roc 5k race recap

I’ve never run this race before.  I signed up because it was a new race for me and it was on Sunday (I had to work & had a party on Saturday).  It also took place in Saratoga where I wanted to run in the park there afterward. And I love the race track.

20140804-113251-41571927.jpg

this past August

When I was a teacher and off for the summer, I used to go to the races often.  Now I just go once for breakfast.

roc5k

As you can see from the map above, the race is run around the race track. It should be pretty flat.

Unfortunately, it was very warm especially for this time of year and the race started at 11 am.

It was sunny and in the 70s. Very warm for this time of year!!

I knew that this would be a crowded race and the kids race and team photo ops would be first so I planned to arrive early. I got there about an hour early, found parking in a big lot and picked up my race packet.

IMG_3838

I had forgotten that you could personalize your bib.  JA is my running buddy. You also got a long sleeve lime green tech shirt. It was nice that they had (many) real bathrooms, massages and a bag check. So I checked my shirt, walked around and watched the kids race.

IMG_3839

finish line for the kids race

It was getting warmer so I tried to drink more water and stay in the shade.

(While I was waiting, my hubby called saying he and my friends were waiting for me on an island in Lake George.  I guess he forgot that the race started so late and of course said “Can’t you just skip it?”  You know what my response was and he agreed to come get me at the marina in a few hours.)

IMG_3841-0

pre-race photo

Then we had to line up.  There were signs for paces and I stood with the 8-9 min milers.  I think there were about 800 runners.

run4roc2014-86

you can see me on the right

The course was very winding.  So I tried to run the tangents but if you did, you were in the sun.

As usual, I went out fast.  It was warm and I found it hard to breathe but I willed myself to not stop until at least the halfway point.  I even skipped the water.

Eventually, I did stop and walk for a while. I hated to do it but when I do, I get a second wind.

I tried not to look at my Garmin but when I did glance at it around mile 2, I got PR thoughts in my brain.

But again during the last mile, I felt the need to walk AGAIN!  I knew I couldn’t finish strong unless I did.

I figured my PR hopes were over and tried to just finish without puking.

As I approached the finish line, I saw 26:XX. I was shocked but couldn’t muster up enough energy to break 27 minutes.

run4roc2014-110

I am coming …

run4roc2014-111

a little closer

Needless to say, I was happy.

I wasn’t very hungry unfortunately because the post-race refreshments were great – the usual bars, yogurt, bananas, apples but also CHOCOLATE MILK, string cheese, homemade PUMPKIN muffins and hot dogs, etc.

I had 2 chocolate milks and took a muffin to go.

I checked the results and saw that I won 2nd in my age group…engraved rocks (run for ROC, get it?)

roc 5k

there were a lot of fast runners in this race.

I took a photo of the award but didn’t stay because they said they would mail it to me.

IMG_3847

Obviously, since my hubby was patiently waiting for me, I couldn’t go to the park and finish my long run 😦 That will have to wait until next weekend.

My race goals were almost the same as all my other 5Ks:

  • run each mile under 10 min. YES! even mile 1 under 9 min!!!!
  • run the whole thing.  NO! but I had a PR!!!!!!!!!!
  • win a AG award.  YES! 2nd.
  • have fun & stay healthy. YES!

Race Splits:

mile 1 – 8:46
mile 2  – 9:05 (walk #1)
mile 3 –  9:05 (walk #2)
.1 – .7:19

27:09 according to my Garmin and officially 27:11 – a PR by 19 seconds!!!!  My last 5K PR was set 4 years ago.

Even though I had positive splits (as usual), I had a faster time than 2 weeks ago when I ran without stopping!?

My day ended as wonderfully as it began.  My hubby picked me up at the marina and we spent the afternoon with friends.

IMG_3856

They had a “Low country boil.”

IMG_3861-0

fish, shrimp, clams, corn, chicken, suadage, etc.

We listened to music, danced and played a trivia game.

IMG_3874

After they left, we hung around for a while and I went to a run/walk on the trail…I think I covered about 2 miles.

IMG_3871

trees are still green here

Then it was time to head back home 😦

IMG_3866

Hopefully this won’t be our last time on the Lake for the season (2 more weekends left.)

Friday Five: Five favorite fall activities

DC_linkup

Every Friday, three DC area bloggers Mary at Mar On the Run, Cynthia at You Signed Up For What?! and Courtney from Eat Pray Run, DC to host the Friday Five linkup.  Anyone can join with their own Friday Five post (yes, it must be a Friday Five!!)  They encourage you to visit other blogs on the linkup, comment, share and engage!

This week, the theme is My Five Favorite Fall Activities

I love fall especially living in the Northeast.

So here they are my five:

1.  Running

I love running when the temps are cool and the leaves have turned colors. These are some of my favorite places to run…

the rail trail

in Washington Park

along the Schroon River

on the bike trails

along Lake George

2.  Eating & drinking anything pumpkin

Yup, I love pumpkin everything…

IMG_3758

10386289_10152510794573323_8932969421581902594_n

No, I didn’t buy them but I was tempted

3.  Racing

Racing in the cooler temps is the best!  Even better is a race in a scenic locale…here are just a few that I have signed up for…

Apple Run 5K

Great Pumpkin Challenge 10k

Stockade-athon 15K

4.  Going to farm activities

There are several around here but Ellms Family farm  is my favorite. I always take my mentee and her sons.  We go on rides, do corn mazes, pick pumpkins, pet the animals, eat cider donuts…so much fun!

5. Hiking

I don’t hike a lot but I do enjoy it and plan to do more this year. These are some places that I go…

Thatcher Park

Five Rivers

Prospect Mountain

Peebles State Park

I haven’t done this hike in Lake George in a few years…hope to do it again.

TTT: Exercising, Running Groups & the Weekend

ttt

1. Exercising

workout
Community Care Physicians is a leader in the field of healthcare. With a strong focus on wellness and prevention, we are the first multispecialty medical group in the Capital Region of NY to open fitness centers that are available for little to no cost. Whether you are improving your lifestyle, restoring your quality of life due to a medical condition, or continuing a personal rehabilitation program, our gyms allow you access to the latest fitness equipment and personal training options conveniently offered by Community Care Physicians, PC.

Community Care Physicians has gym locations in Delmar and Latham. These gyms are unstaffed facilities that require you to enroll and get a key tag prior to entering. With your key tag, you will be able to access both gym locations during gym hours, Monday through Friday 5 am to 11 pm and Saturday and Sunday 7 am to 7 pm.

YAY!! FREE with my health insurance. I live in Delmar and it is 5 mins from my house on the way to and from work.  Double YAY!

You see, I don’t belong to a gym. It’s matter of money and convenience and time and motivation to go.  I had a treadmill in my basement but it is broken. Where I work, there is a treadmill back stage where it is dark, dreary and cluttered with junk. Yes, I use it when it is virtually impossible to run outside – thunderstorms, snowstorms, icy conditions, etc.

I know that strength training is beneficial to runners.  I plan to go ONCE a week and ONCE on the weekend.  I even signed my hubby up. I’ll keep you posted.

class

Speaking of exercising, they are offering an exercise class at work on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Sounds perfect, right?  I wouldn’t have to leave the building.

I play tennis on Tuesdays so I went on Thursday.  There were about 10 people there (out of the 25 who signed up), a few young students but mostly older women.

Well, it was total torture!!!

The young buff trainer proceeded to lead us on training intervals that involved running, hopping, jumping jacks, burpees, push ups, etc. Definitely not explaining the moves, not helping you do them at your own level…he just kept you moving like a drill sergeant.

Yea, I did sweat but I was at a loss to follow along on many of the moves and unable to do some at the level he was asking.  I honestly didn’t get much out of it and vowed to never return.

Then I thought that I was too hasty and was going to reconsider until the gym opportunity arose.

2.  Running Groups

10646714_711991102208905_5755445887376275963_n

Last Sunday when I bumped into an old friend, she mentioned this program.  She trained for the Freihofer 5k this way and is enrolled in it for the Troy Turkey 10k. (Incidentally, she has run 5 races, is training for a half and considering a full…I must be  a slow learner!!)

The training runs are on Monday evenings and Saturday mornings.

I can do the Mondays with no problem but I have races on most weekends and can only do 3 Saturdays.

I still think it’s worth it so that I can have some people to run with once a week and also for the drills that will come along with the training.

There’s an info session  tonight so we’ll see but I am leaning toward doing it.

3.  The weekend

I am not going to race this weekend!  You know I want to…and there are quite a few races out there that I could run…

especially this one:

I was very close to signing up for this one as my fall half marathon.  I know this is shallow but the deciding factor was no medal but then they changed and are giving one for the first time.

Instead of racing, I plan to do a long run on one of the bike trails on Saturday.

And spend Sunday on Lake George probably BBQing on one of the islands and maybe hiking.

Happy Running!  Do you belong to a gym?  Are you part of a running group?  What are your plans for the weekend?

Running, Boating, Running, Boating

Yup, that was how I spent my Labor Day weekend.

The weather wasn’t perfect but I’ll take it.  It beats winter!

On Saturday, which was a nice day, I stayed home until dinner, doing housework, errands and then joined the hubby at the marina for dinner.

On Sunday morning, I had an awesome run in that 90% humidity.

Well, awesome because I was running along Lake George. Instead of my usual run around the Sagamore hotel are, I decided to run south on 9N.

It is rolling hills (the reverse direction of my the Adirondack Distance Run) and I walked whenever I felt I needed to.

IMG_3550

IMG_3551

IMG_3553

I turned and ran around the cemetery before heading back to the marina.

IMG_3556

IMG_3558

I completed a total of 4.5 miles. I would have liked to do more but everyone was waiting at the marina to head out on the lake.

It was the annual Christmas in Log Bay party but it was looking like rain.

And it drizzled all day but none of the predicted hard rain and thunderstorms materialized. Lucky us!

there are usually hundreds of boats

IMG_3572

Yes, the live band still played and everyone had fun despite the lousy weather.

By evening, it had cleared up.  We went out for pizza and then had birthday cake while watching the fireworks. (This was a weekend of unhealthy eating!!!)

IMG_3574

I got up early the next morning, Labor Day.  I usually don’t run two days in a row but it was going to be a picture perfect day and I couldn’t resist. It was warm and very foggy over the water.

IMG_3576

I decided to run on 9N again but this time going north.

UPHILL!!

Again, there was a lot of walking involved. I’m ok with that.

IMG_3578

Eventually I turned into a housing complex and continued my run…now going downhill.

IMG_3579

I ran all the way until it ended at the water.

IMG_3580

And then I had to go back.  I could barely walk up the hill.  But I knew as soon as I got to the main road, I would be running downhill.

IMG_3582

beautiful blue sky away from the lake.

I made a quick detour over the Sagamore bridge.

IMG_3590

I finally arrived back at the marina to a clearing sky.

IMG_3594

After another 4.5 miles completed, we headed out on our boat.

We decided to dock at one of our favorite spots.
