Felice, a local blogger, is the creator of the Strong Running Mamas group.  When she asked me in 2010 to help organize a group for new runners, I eagerly accepted.

It was a lot of fun. These women are awesome and have inspired me.

Now the group has migrated to Facebook and has grown to over 100 members

Running For Meg

1522176_10202506151562532_1992286963_n

I had been planning to do a long run anyway this weekend.  My 2 new running partners proposed Saturday.  They have been running together in preparation of their first half in Philly but I have not run with them since November.

19 - EASY

Adrienne & Heidi on Nov 13, 2013

Then I heard about Meg. Running on the road in the morning and killed by a drunk driver.  It could happen to any of us.

We decided to run 8 miles in her honor and wear blue since that was her favorite color.

At the last minute, Heidi had to cancel but I was still meeting Adrienne at the Corning Bike Path.  On FB, I heard that other runners that I knew were going to be there too.

20140118-113753.jpg

The forecast was for snow overnight but it never appeared but it was cold (but not as cold as it has been or is going to be.)

20140118-113805.jpg

When I arrived, it was still cloudy.  I immediately spotted runners. They were finishing their runs.

20140118-113813.jpg

Then Adrienne arrived.

20140118-113823.jpg

We decided to run together for as long as we could (she is faster than me). The plan was to go out for 4 miles and then head back. Ahead of us were some other runners that I knew (SRMs) who were running faster and fewer miles.  It was great to bump into them.

20140118-113831.jpg

Adrienne & I talked the whole time which made the run bearable. As usual, I was fine starting out but I got very warm when the sun came out.

The path was mostly dry but every now and then there were patches of ice.  I made sure that I was VERY CAREFUL and slowed down looking for snow to run on. I am not used to running without any walking so I was kinda grateful for the ice.

But I did run the whole time with her.  (I even ate my Gu while running.) It was a struggle but I was able to keep up with her until the last 1/2 mile.  My back was starting to hurt and I told her to run ahead.

20140118-113841.jpg

So I am pretty pleased. There’s something to be said about the pressure of keeping up with a running partner. This was about 10 minutes faster than my usual run/walk 8 mile runs.

And the snow never arrived!

What a great way to start off the weekend!!

Happy Running! Did you run any miles for Meg?

Running & Eating with Friends

As I mentioned in a previous post, I am running a half marathon on March 30 with someone I met during a race. Thanks to Facebook, we remained in touch and I promised that I would run some of the long runs with her since this is her first half marathon.

I am a solo runner.  I run alone.  I run slow…walk often and feel more comfortable running by myself (except in races which I love.)

my last group run – May 2010

Heidi asks every weekend and I have yet to say yes.  This weekend, I caved and I suggested Nisky Bike Path at 10:30 am. (I had planned to go there anyway & I planned to run 6.)

FB

I got up and looked outside and it was raining… I grumbled to my husband “that is why I run alone.  Yesterday it was sunny and 60 degrees and today it is rainy, cloudy, windy….blah blah blah.”

But I got dressed and since it was warm (50 degrees) decided on a tee shirt and running skirt.  I also brought a windbreaker and cap.

20131117-141652.jpg

like my new compression socks?

When I got to the bike path, it was only drizzling.  Adrienne & Heidi were there already.  Adrienne had said that she would only run 4 miles but she wound up doing the whole 6 and even faster than us.

We ran 3 miles out and then turned around and ran 3 miles back.  We chatted the whole time which made it go by quickly.

Neither Heidi and Adrienne had run more than 6 miles and March 30 will be their first half…so exciting.

Heidi and I ran at the same pace…though I am sure that she would have run faster if I weren’t there.  Adrienne sped up for the last 1 mile since it was obvious that we were running too slow for her.

Adrienne and Heidi

Adrienne and Heidi

For me, it was a boost.  I never have run 6 miles without walking.  They never walk when they run.  It will be interesting to see if I can keep up.  I should mention that Heidi is in her 40s and Adrienne in her 20s or 30s.

experimenting with a new app called fitsnap

I was nervous about my lack of speed (and my sore foot which didn’t hurt much at all) but I had fun.

We hope to do it again (probably every Sunday) at a different place and add more runners to the group.

After I left, I had to stop at work for something.  Since I was already dressed for running, I decided to run some more.  I ran 2 more slower miles. I guess I need a partner…

In the evening, I went to my Mah Jongg group’s 5th anniversary dinner.  We tried a new restaurant this year called Ala Shanghai.  We ordered lots of appetizers and shared, then we ordered many main dishes and shared and then ordered several desserts. Everything was so good. So glad I ran those extra miles!

Morning or Evening?

I am talking about running.

Do you prefer to run in the morning or the evening?

What factors influence the time of your run?

  • ScheduleI work, I play tennis, I play mah jongg, I go boating in the summer. I also have friend and family obligations. So I have to fit running in whenever I can.  So sometimes it means I HAVE to run before work because that’s the only time I have.  My after work times tend to be busier.
20131023-084533.jpg

before work morning run

  • Distance I work.  I have to be at work at a particular time.  So when I run in the morning, I don’t have time to run more than 3 miles (if I were faster or got up earlier, I could.) So if I want or need to run more than that, I choose after work.
20131005-125619.jpg

after work run in the park

  • Daylight – I don’t particularly like to run in the dark.  Before we turn the clocks back, it is dark in the morning.  After we turn the clocks back, it is dark after work. So if it is dark, I don’t run in my neighborhood (there are no street lights.) If it is dark, I run after work on lit streets.

trying to run after work on the bike trail

  • Weather – I’m not a fan of the cold but I will run in it.  I prefer the heat but extreme heat or humidity is a no-no.  In the summer, I may run before work to avoid the heat and in the winter after work, when it is warmer.  I WILL NOT RUN IN RAIN OR SNOW OR SLEET.  So before I set my alarm, I check the weather so I can decide when to run.
20130327-195907.jpg

after work run

  • Location – My neighborhood is boring.  So if I am to do a longer run, I drive to a more interesting location (like a bike path, park, rail trail, etc.) after work.
20131018-120439.jpg

after work on the rail trail

  • Running Surface – I don’t own a treadmill but there is one where I work.  So I run after work if I want to use a treadmill.  The same goes for a track.  There is one where I work.  For a trail, I would have to drive so that’s after work, as well. Running on the road I do either before (in my neighborhood) or after.
20130710-133622.jpg

after work run on the track

  • Running Partners – I usually run solo.  That way, I can choose where and when.  But if you do run with others, you will have to agree on the time.

evening group run

Now on weekends and days off, it is perfect.  I can run whenever I want. Running will be awesome where (if I ever) retire.

Yesterday I ran 8 miles and didn’t do it until noon. Today I have the day off and I may run or I may not…

8 cold windy mikes on the bike path

But on weekdays, truthfully, running before work is the BEST WAY to start the day.  It gives you so much more energy.  You feel like you’ve done something good for yourself. Now that it is lighter in the am, I hope to do more of those before work runs!!

Happy Running! When do you run?  How do you decide?

Running is About Community

richard-obrien-running-is-not-quote-558x419

I am fortunate to be part a Running Group (Strong Running Mamas).

It started as a small group by The Happy Runner who wanted to encourage some friends to start running.

Janis, Jen, Bridget, Jen, Felice, Lisa & me after the run

May 2010

Boy did she!  They started running for 1 minute and 2 years later they completed a marathon!!! (They even motivated me to run a half marathon!)

June - Freihofers Run for Women 5K

June 2011

The group keeps growing! Now it is on Facebook and I think there are about 120 members.  Women in this local running community seek advice, plan runs together, etc.  But more importantly, they support each other.

When I broke my ankle last year, they chipped in and sent me a gift card.  I was so touched!

Valley Cats 5k '10

with Amanda – June 2010

Recently, a group of us all pooled money together to pay for one of the SRM’s entry into the NYC Marathon.  This runner has had some physical & emotional setbacks this past year which had prevented her from running.

ours will be black with pink letters

We hope to all be wearing the above shirt at the Mohawk-Hudson Half and Full Marathons on October 13!

Thanks Felice (in the center) for starting the SRMs!!

TTT: Heat, Tennis & Running

1.  It has been HOT in the Northeast. 90’s!! It has also been HUMID in addition to being hot. I have been feeding my friend’s cat before work while she has been on vacation. So I am been doing my activities outside AFTER work. (Not smart, I know.)

my friend’s car on Tuesday

2.  On Tuesday, I played tennis for the 2nd time.  Doubles again and I felt a lot more comfortable. (with my tennis not the weather)  I even won with 3 different partners.  Afterwards. we all went to one player’s house to go swimming in her pool.  YAY!

pavillion where we started

3. Yesterday I ran the 2nd Run with Mizuno sponsored by FleetFeet. It was held this time in Central Park in Schenectady.  Again, a very small group of runners – ALL FAST!!  I tried similar Mizunos as last week but in a different color.

Again, they felt pretty comfy.

We ran the Cardiac Classic / Run 4 Your Life 5K Course which I had done in 2011 and 2009.  I ran alone and was way behind all the other runners. My pace is still VERY SLOW but I ran the whole time (but it was a struggle!)  I had no idea where I was going and wound up missing .5 miles of it. (I added another .5 mile afterwards to make it 3 miles for the run.)

This park is a beautiful place to run

I love these runs because it forces me to run in a new location and run faster. My time was a 33:xx rather than 29:xx in 2011.  I am not going to beat myself up about it.  (My ankle was not happy last night…so I have to be PATIENT.)

Today the humidity and temps are down finally.

Happy Running! How are you dealing with the heat?

Happy Anniversary “Running Mamas”

Janis, Jen M, Felice, Jen F, Bridget, Lisa & me

A year ago (actually March 14, 2010) Felice (The Happy Runner) organized a group of young mothers who had NEVER run before.  She asked me and several local bloggers to help out.

I participated in the group training runs and got to follow them from the “wondering  if they could run 2 minutes without stopping” stage to finally running a 5K race.

at the Freihofers Run for Women 5K

Well, they didn’t stop there!! They ran more 5ks and got faster!!! They ran a 10k!! Then they signed up to run a Half Marathon –  in their first year of running!!!!!

Whoa!

I was so proud of them!! But at the same time, a little jealous… This is my 3rd year of running and I’m still entering 5ks!! (51 of them….) And I am happy when I break 30 minutes.

These ladies made me realize that I could push myself.  So I did!!

I finished the Turkey Trot 5k well under 28 minutes!!

Then believe it or not, I ran a HALF MARATHON.

So thanks “Running Mamas” for lighting a fire under my feet!

Let me know when you sign up for a Marathon. I have no plans for running one…but you never know…

Happy Running!
