Mama Goes Masters Virtual Race

I ran 4 miles today in honor of MCM Mama turning 40.

There were so many reasons why I didn’t want to:

  • I was tired
  • I had a cold/cough
  • I had to go grocery shopping (the cupboards were bare)
  • They had just tarred my road (& the smell was nauseating)
  • I hadn’t run in EIGHT days

But it was MCM Mama’s 40th birthday so I did it.

I got home from work and it had rained off and on all week and was very humid yet not too warm.  I held my nose as I ran on the freshly tarred road.  For the first 2 miles, I had a pain in my side.  I tried to breathe deeper and slow down.  Eventually it went away.  I can’t say that this run was painless.  I walked often but when I was done.  I was glad to be back!!!

I finished in 44:44!!

Happy B-Day MCM Mama!

Tennis is Over…Back to Running

Our local newspaper has a tennis blog which covered the USTA Eastern Sectionals Championships this past weekend.  The posts were about the disappointing showings of all the teams in my Region.  Here was my response which sums up how things went:

I just returned from Sectionals as part of the Women’s 3.0 team. Yes, we finished dead last with a 0-5 record but that doesn’t tell the whole story. This team finished near the bottom of its region in 2009 but this year, we tied for 1st and won both of our playoffs and then won at regionals. Our team does not have a coach nor do we have organized team practices due to work schedules and geography. We all just play socially throughout the year at different facilities. Of the 13 women on our team, there is one almost 50 yr old, 7 women in their 50’s and 5 women in their 60’s. At Sectionals, we repeatedly competed against women at least 20 years younger, who belonged to the same club, had a coach and practiced together weekly throughout the season. Although, we didn’t win, if you ask anyone at Sectionals, there was NOT a more enthusiastic, motivated, optimistic, kinder, more generous bunch of women. I felt privileged to be a part of this last place team.

Now for the play by play/day by day commentary:

Thursday – The 13 of us arrived in groups by car at dffering times to the Sheraton hotel in Syracuse.  The team captains had a meeting followed by a individual team meeting to give out the next day’s lineups.  My group left last because some of us worked and we stopped in Utica for dinner. I learned when I arrived that we would play on Friday at Syracuse U at 10:30 am and Nottingham HS at 1:30 pm.  I was to play singles (holy cow!) at 1:30.

Friday – We got up around 7 am and headed for Starbucks across the street.

Pat, Catalina & Susan

Although I wasn’t going to be playing, I went to Syracuse U to watch the others.

Patti, Donna, Nancy & Julia

Imagine the shock when they announced my name for 2nd singles.  Apparently my captain handed in the wrong lineup and the afternoon group had to play in the morning!!! My racket was in the car parked far away.  Luckily I got it in time.

my first match

We played Western.  Julia won at 1st singles, Phyllis & Annie won at 2nd doubles but everyone else lost. My singles match was against a very tough opponent.  After I got over the lst set jitters, I felt I played my best, long rallies and lots of deuce games –just no game wins 😦

We then to the HS where the team played LI.  This team was even younger and tougher.  Julia won again at lst singles but everyone else lost!!

Annie at 2nd doubles

Back at the hotel, we went to a USTA sponsored cocktail party –lots of raffle prizes but only 1 on our team won – an umbrella!

all of our team (-Julia) at the party

Some of the team went out to dinner, some of us just got a snack and played Mah Jongg for the rest of the evening.

Catalina, Fran from USTA, Phyllis & me

Saturday – we started the day again with a Starbucks breakfast.  We were scheduled at the HS at 9:30am and then Syracuse U at 12:30.  I was playing doubles at 12:30 and I knew Phyllis would be more careful about the lineups.

The morning match was against Southern – as it turned out – THE BEST TEAM.  We lost all 5 matches even Julia, our star lost!!

Julia at singles

In the afternoon, we played against NJ.  Julia played a grueling match but won and everyone else lost – a familiar pattern.  I played with Catalina who unfortunately did not play well and I couldn’t compensate though I felt I did not play badly.

me playing doubles on Saturday

Susan, Catalina & me after our match

We lamented our losses in the hot tub, then  at the bar and finally, at a wonderful dinner (paid for by USTA).

top-Annie, Patti, Pat, bottom -Donna, me, Laurie

MaryPat

Sunday – our last day and our team out of contention, for sure, so we had breakfast at the hotel and checked out.  It was raining and  the matches were scheduled in one of the 6 local indoor facilities.

Julia who played all 4 matches so far at singles wanted to play doubles so guess who volunteered to play singles – Yes, MOI!!

The singles matches against Metro were supposed to start at 10:30am and the doubles at 12:00.  However, they all started around 11 am. My match was my most enjoyable of the weekend.  I didn’t win but I played really well.  My opponent was young, of course, but so sweet and complimentary.  Julia & Phyllis won in a 3rd set tie-breaker and the rest ended up  losing close matches.

Catalina & MaryPat playing indoors

 We took a team photo…

Celebrating the end of our season

our team

and then headed home in the POURING rain.  My group stopped in Utica for an Italian dinner.

And so it goes…..

Weekend Update

I survived my 5k on Saturday (barely).

I then headed up to Lake George for the rest of the weekend. We had lunch in Bolton Landing.

at Water's Edge Marina

our friends getting ready

and hung out on our boat til the evening when we went to Harris Bay marina for a theme party.  Our friends won first place with their “The Fog” movie theme. It was a beautiful evening.

Harris Bay at sunset

The next morning, it was cloudy & cool and I went for my usual 3 mile  run around the Sagamore. I felt better than yesterday.

We spent the rest of Sunday hanging out on the water with friends (5 boats tied together) until it started to rain around 5 pm.

having lunch on our boat at Bassin Bay

I’m glad I got in a short run…who knows when I’ll get a chance again.

I haven’t decided on my next 5k…there are many possibilities – Aug 28 in Altamont, Sept 4 in Saratoga, and/or Sept 11 in Guilderland.

Happy Running!

Jailhouse Rock 5k Race Report

This race also counts for  Courtney’s Virtual Race for Change benefiting LLS.

This is my 2nd time running this race.  Last year, I won my age group & a pair of socks.

This summer, my tennis has taken up most of my time so I didn’t feel prepared to do well on this race.  I had only run 5 miles since my last 5k race. I decided to just do it and get on with the weekend. NO EXPECTATIONS! NO DISAPPOINTMENTS!!

I remembered that the race ended with a BIG hill and there were some minor ones in between.

So…

Unfortunately, I got up feeling nauseous and tired exactly the same way I felt the day before. At least, the weather was perfect for a race – high 60’s and sunny with a breeze!!!!

I arrived at the race early enough and bumped into Melissa from the Happy Runner’s running group.  I hadn’t seen her since the Freihofer race in June.  She is training for the NYC Marathon but in this 5k, she was going to be pushing her daughter Mia in a stroller.

I knew I was in trouble when we had to walk up that big hill to get to the starting line and I was winded.

I started at the front.  It doesn’t bother me that everyone whizzes by me. I felt sick the whole race – sweating (& it wasn’t hot), feeling like I was going to puke.  During the 2nd mile, my head started to throb also.   I only stopped at the water stop and I persevered to the end.

It’s times like this that the thought goes through your head, why am I running????  This is not fun…………

During last  Saturday’s 5k I felt great and was surprised that my time wasn’t faster.  This time, when I saw the clock at 29 minutes, I was shocked that I was so fast!!

I managed to finish under 30 minutes at 29:49!!! 2 seconds faster than last week.

I didn’t puke and after a while, my headache went away. So I hung around with Melissa to see if I won anything.

I DID!!!!!!!!

I won one of the raffle prizes – RoadID and I won 3rd place in my age group – a pair of Jailhouse Rock 5k socks (The same as I won last year.)

Stats:
Time -29:436
Pace – 9:37/mi
Finish 156/231 ( 3/4 in 55-59 age group)

Goals Recap for this  5K:

A – PR
B – under 30 minutes
C- faster than last year’s (31:04)
D- win my age group
E – finish

I didn’t do A, I accomplished B, C, E – Not bad considering…

I’m off to Lake George!!!!!!!!

Happy Running and Enjoy the Weekend!

Five Foto Friday

I have the Jailhouse Rock 5k tomorrow and it’s been a busy week.  I’m going to think of this race as practice with no expectations.  Whatever happens, happens. After the race, I’m going to Lake George for the rest of the weekend. It is always a fun time and again, the weather promises to be perfect.

I’ll be competing in Syracuse next Friday, Saturday & Sunday so this coming week, I need to focus on tennis and then re-focus on running after it’s over.

Now for 5 photos:

They’re of Lake George, of course!

Happy Running and Good Luck on Weekend Races!

Happy Hump Day

Gee, this week is speeding by!

I have a 5K this Saturday!  After last week’s lack of running, I planned to run more so I could maybe PR!

NOT!!!

Monday after work, I had team tennis practice.  Yesterday, I played tennis after work.  Today, I have a team tennis lesson after work. Tomorrow I play tennis before work.

Yes, tennis has overshadowed running until after Sectionals and if we win, til after Nationals.

And then, there’s Amanda, my mentee – Sunday at the lake, Mon am – road test, Thursday – Funplex…

Amanda & Richard on our boat

And then, there’s my Mah Jongg friends (They want to play 2x this week) and my hubby and my JOB!

How’s a girl supposed to find time to run??? If I don’t run, my 5k race time will SUCK!

I’m doing my best — Yesterday after 2 hours of tennis, I ran 3 miles (in the almost dark).  This morning before work, I squeezed in another 2 miles. I may even run some more Friday before work (though I don’t usually run the day before a race.)

Goals for this Saturday’s 5K:

A – PR
B – under 30 minutes
C- faster than last year’s (31:04)
D- win my age group
E – finish

Happy Running!
