Walking (Running) in a Winter Wonderland

Hudson Mohawk Runners Club sponsors FREE races throughout the winter for its members. The course is pretty boring but free is free.  So I signed up for the 3 mile option (there was also a 15K)  today and hoped the conditions would be ok for running.

20131215-103257.jpg

Well, I woke up to at least a foot of snow.  My hubby wasn’t keen on rushing to clear the driveway so I bailed on the race and baked cookies instead.

20131215-103325.jpg

only green trees this year with sprinkles instead of frosting = lazy baker

Eventually, the sun came out and though it was windy, it was warmer than yesterday. I had some errands to do so I drove into town to run. My legs were feeling the effects of 7 miles yesterday.  I again wore my yak trax and took a slow 3 mile run.

20131215-143156.jpg

So that’s 10 miles for the weekend.  That’s a lot for me.

But there’s a reason:

Monday – cookie party at work, tennis after
Tuesday – tennis, dinner out with tennis ladies
Wednesday – yoga, friend’s birthday dinner out
Thursday – movie, friend’s birthday dinner out
Friday – annual tennis party

I will be eating a lot of food this week and I don’t know when or if I will find the time to run.

Happy Running! How was your weekend?

Last Run 5K Race Report

Dec 17, 2011

Dec 14, 2013

This race is always a lot of fun. It sells out fast so I always sign up early. I have done it in 2010, 2011 and 2012.  2010 was my best attempt. In 2011, I fell near the end and in 2012, it was my first race back after my stress fracture. Nonetheless, you do this race for fun, not time.

lg 5k finish

racing in my first last run jacket

Normally you get windbreakers (I have yellow, orange and blue ones).  This year, we got a long-sleeve G-Force wicking fabric shirt.

20131213-152004.jpg

Also the course changed for the first time. The new course route starts on Washington Ave and proceeds through Capital Holiday Lights in Washington Park, and ends on State Street.

last run 13 As in past years, the race starts with 15 minutes of fireworks and then you run through the lights in the park.

Photos from last year:

This year, the weather was the coldest it’s been.  Teens and single digits with the wind chill. Yikes!  To make matters worse, a snowstorm was predicted. Snow starting in the evening.  I kept my fingers crossed that it would not snow hard until I was done. (Remember I fell in this race on dry turf.)

dec14

yup – cold and snowy!

My friend Mary Pat signed up for this race and we had decided to go together. But she lives in the hill towns and was afraid to drive in this awful weather.  So I begged my hubby to drive me.

Since I was afraid that the snow would prevent me from running on Saturday and on Sunday, I decided to run this morning before the snow.

dec14am

colder but no snow yet!

Yes, it was freezing!!  And I only ran 4 miles rather than my usual weekend 8 in case, I was going to the race in the evening.  I knew my legs would be tired and then I wouldn’t be stupid enough to run fast and possibly fall. I could just walk and take photos and have fun.

20131214-112038.jpg

And that’s what I planned.

I bundled up wearing 2 pairs of gloves, 2 pairs of socks, 3 layers and a hat.  I hoped that I would not freeze to death.  I also decided on wearing my YakTrax.  That way I wouldn’t worry about slipping and falling.

My hubby agreed to drive me to the race.  He always does for this race since he has a free parking pass from an old  job.  This time it didn’t work so we drove around looking for parking.  Eventually he just dropped me off at the Empire State Plaza since it was getting late. He would park the car underground and meet me after the race near the band & refreshments.

It was kinda late so I sprinted through the mall which wasn’t easy wearing YakTrax.  I found the start just as the fireworks were beginning.

20131214-200250.jpg

20131214-200259.jpg

They were really good this year because you had a better view with the new start.

20131214-203250.jpg

Then headed to the start.  It was very crowded.  I thought I was at the back but I was facing the wrong way and I was in the front.  The race was crowded the whole time.  It was also snowing the whole race.

I didn’t wear my Garmin and I didn’t care at all about time.  I tried to run (yes run) at a steady pace and slow enough not to fall on the slippery ground.

There were clocks at miles 1, 2 and 3 so I knew that I was running at a slower pace but I was shocked that it wasn’t as slow as I thought.

The lights in the park are spectacular but it was more fun with runners dressed up in costumes and many seeing them for the first time this year. (I have run through this park several times already.)

I only walked once and I really didn’t need to. Even though I had run 4 miles earlier, I was not tired. My legs felt good.

Unfortunately, there were no fireworks while crossing the finish line like last year but I was very pleased with my time (33:16 ) considering the conditions.

I ran this race faster than last year and I was trying to run slow.

20131214-200218.jpg

I was covered in snow by the end

I went inside to find my hubby.  No ice cream this year.  Maybe it was too cold.  I didn’t win any raffle prizes or AG award so we left quickly and headed to Applebees – my hubby’s reward for driving me to the race in a blizzard.

happy hubby

So this was be my last race of 2013.  I signed up for a free one tomorrow.  I’ll see how much snow we get overnight.

Happy Running! Anyone one else running a holiday race?

I don’t really need anything.  When I need/want something, I usually just buy it.

So here is a wish list for the runner who has almost everything:

DIY Cards

ScannedImage-4

I have quite a few birthdays in addition to Christmas to celebrate in December.  Instead of buying cards, I have been making them.

Thanks to Walgreens and Facebook, it is cheap and very easy.

I create a 4×6 collage print from photos in my Facebook account and/or photos from any from my Friends’ Facebook accounts.  Cool, right?

It cost $.39 and recently there was a 40% off special (that’s $.23.)

Here is a sampling:

catalina

You can make bigger collages (5×7 or 8×10) and they very often have code for a “free collage.”  You can also make single print with all kinds of cute borders.

I make these a lot and my friends think I am so techie.  I do it for fun.

I didn’t create my Christmas cards this way.  I ordered regular digital cards (with envelopes) from Shutterfly.  But next year, I may even do it this way.

Happy Running! Would like this type of card over a traditional card?

Baby, It’s Cold Outside

1385569_316897328448636_1859726113_n

I am a wimp when it comes to the cold.  Last Saturday I dragged out my winter running hat, fleece-lined tights and thermal running gloves.  And I ran and I was cold (mostly due to the wind.)

20131130-154714.jpg

I haven’t run in the ice and snow yet but that will be coming, I am sure. Due to after work commitments, I sometimes have to run before work when it is even colder. (I take that back. Yesterday I ran alternating between the sidewalk and the road trying to dodge the ice. Scary!!)

dec11

and I have a race on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

There’s always the treadmill or will I be able to summon the BEAST in me and run outdoors.

beasts

I have done it in previous winters.  It is always hard in the beginning.  I envy you runners who live in a warmer climate.

Happy Running! How do you cope with running in the cold weather?

National Running Challenge

Do you like FREE things and do you like to run RACES? Then you need to check out the National Running Challenge!

The National Running Challenge is a challenge for runners who run races. Each challenge series runs for several months.  All you have to do is after each race, enter your stats to earn points. Your finishing time does not matter! The longer the race, the more points you get. However, there needs to be an official results page. (Unfortunately, several of my races did not have official results like the Delmar Turkey Trot and the Stuff the Sleigh 5k).)

The Fall series is now running, with races from September 14th to December 31st.

Well, as you can see, I’m in 48th place BUT in my age group I am FIRST (out of 2)!

nrc
If you are leading  in the standings, whether it is overall or age group, you may win prizes! The prizes can be anything from gift cards to running related items!

So you may win a prize even if you are not fast.  That is cool!

nrcag

So when you sign up, be sure to put me down as your referral, Darlene Cardillo! (That’ll give me 5 more points!)

Happy Running!  Did you sign up?  How many points did you earn?

#yearofrunning13

For the third year in a  row, Miss Zippy has asked all running bloggers to take a look back at their year of running and share it.

I did it last year and I will do it again this year:

  • Best race experience?
still lookin happy

March 17, 2013

This is an easy one. After 2012 when I had broken my ankle & had surgery, then had a stress fracture in the other foot, I worried that I wouldn’t be able to run longer races again.  I trained for the First Watch Half Marathon in Sarasota, Florida and though I ran it very conservatively, I finished and I was ecstatic.  It gave me the confidence to run other halfs (even after injuries.)

  • Best run?

19 - EASYNovember 17, 2013

I am a solo runner.  it’s out of convenience and lack of self confidence. I am slow and I stop and walk when I am tired.  To date, my longest non-stop run has been 5 miles and that was a race. I am now signed up for another half marathon on March 30, 2014.  I am running it with 2 new runners who have never done one and they asked me to run with them one Sunday.  Nervously I accepted and we ran 6 miles….without stopping!  I haven’t done that since so I guess races and running partners motivate me.

  • Best new piece of gear?

running in the dark with my new "white" shoesMizuno Sayonara

20131123-123053.jpgBrooks Adrenaline

These are my two new pairs of running shoes.  I am picky about my shoes.  I have problems with my feet from time to time (my right foot) and  since wearing these, my foot has stopped hurting for the most part.  I have worn the Sayonaras for short runs and the Adrenalines for long one.

  • Best piece of running advice you received?

Unfortunately, I got injured again in 2013 (broke my foot on June 1) so I am going to use the same quote from Runner’s World: “Injury is something that happens to you as an athlete. Others might tell you that you’re done. But if you keep at it, you might be able to get back…”Abdi Abdirahman, third-place finisher in the men’s 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials. If you are a runner, you risk getting injured.  You don’t stop running forever.  When you are healed, you start again and you will slowly get it back!

  • Most inspirational runner?

November 5, 2013

Joy Johnson, age 86, died after completing her 25th consecutive NYC Marathon. I’ll quote her about running: “It’s energizing. You sleep better at night. And the best part for me is you can eat anything you want.” And about her last run:  “I’ll be at the back of the pack, but I don’t mind. I just praise the Lord I can get out of bed each morning and run. A lot of people my age are in wheelchairs.”  I hope I am am healthy enough to run as long as she did and enjoy it.

  • If you could sum up your year in a couple of words, what would they be?

I realized that injuries happen and I am grateful for every race that I can finish!

couldn’t resist going back to the park – didn’t take pics this time (colder, windier, rainy)

  • Friday – rest, 1 mile on the TM (rain), mah jongg
  • Saturday –proctor exam,  8 miles on the bike trail
20131207-155147.jpg

8 cold windy miles on tired legs

  • Sunday –  rest, THE STREAK HAS ENDED,  movie & dinner out to celebrate my mentee’s b-day

I decided to end the Streak after 10 days.  I was just running to get it done.  On my rest days, I was only running 1 mile and it took longer to get dressed and undressed. After Saturday’s pathetic long run (with more walking than running), I decided that I do need my rest.  My runs are suffering.  My legs are tired when I run EVERYDAY. I think I prefer quality not quantity. So I am returning to running only 2-3 times each week plus a longer run on the weekend.

This Week:

  • Monday –  3 miles after work, mall walk with BFF
  • Tuesday – rest, tennis
  • Wednesday – 3 miles before work, yoga after
  • Thursday – 3 miles before work, haircut after
  • Friday – rest, mah jongg
  • Saturday – 5K race
  • Sunday –  3 mile race + more, lights in the park

Happy Running! How is your running going? Any upcoming races? Anyone still streaking?

On the running front, the weather has been balmy but that it is ending.  Today it is raining and tomorrow it is supposed to snow!! Oh no!  I am not ready for YakTrax.  I hope I can get a long run in. (I find it impossible to run more than 3 miles on a treadmill.)

Happy Running!  What are your favorite holiday decorations? Does the winter weather put a damper on your running?
