Betar Byway 5K and Moreau Mile Race Report

bbw5k

I ran this race last year and remembered it being fun (even though there were hills) so I signed up again.

can I still beat 30 minutes?

The 5K is a out and back and has one hill just before the 1 mile mark, with the rest being flat and the down hill at about 2.25 and a slight increase at the finish. Course is both paved (along Hudson River) and packed dirt path in wooded area, for approx 1.25 mile.

bb elevation

It is about an hour north of my house (and on the way to my boat.)

And most importantly, I love scenic. Here are some views of the course:

The weather was cool and cloudy.  It was about 50 degrees when I left the house. It was predicted to warm up to the 70’s later.  Actually perfect running weather for a change.

I left early and arrived in plenty of time.  I parked nearby and got my race packet.

Then I used the restroom – yes, there were real ones.

11391373_10153891899694428_8285595346618731980_n

Believe it or not, I didn’t know anyone at this race.

So I just patiently waited until it was time for everyone to walk down to the water for the start.

20140608-203536-74136462.jpg

Of course, while waiting for the gun to go off, I wound up talking to some older runners… about future races and running shoes.

I planned to start near the front since there were no timing chips or start line but I was chatting and forgot.

I must say that this was one of the prettiest course I have ever run.  It was along the water most of the time or on a paved trail through a park.

I tried to focus on the scenery since I knew that this one would be tough due to hilly course.

The first mile had a small hill which I ran up and then came the monster hill.  I walked up the whole thing and had trouble doing that it was so steep. I think I did the right thing since it was early in the race.

It wasn’t warm but I walked through the first water stop anyway but very quickly.

Lately I am having trouble running fast.  I am trying but my breathing is labored and my legs just won’t go.  ( guess that’s why runners do speed drills!)

Eventually the course looped around and you headed back to the start.  I passed through the second water stop and then finally came the big hill. This time you were running down. These hills always scare me so I hold back especially with my falling history.

20140608-203537-74137320.jpg

Then I think I walked once more before the final hill which led to the finish line.

160336736.2o9YlH3S

can I catch her?

160336737.ZxeAwjHc

nope. she’s too fast

I tried unsuccessfully to pass a 10 year old.

160336738.LA4n8qsE

but I will beat 30 minutes!

160336740.7oQh957D

yes, I will!

But at least I finished under 30 minutes! 29:25

Splits:

mile 1 – 9:38
mile 2 – 9:44
mile 3 – 9:06
.14 – 8:43

At least, I was 24 seconds faster than last year but slower than last week’s 5k.

After the 5K, there was a one mile race.  Not for kids but for everyone.  It looked like fun last year so I signed up for this one too (I am crazy like that.)

Of course after the hilly 3.1 miles, my legs were too tired to run even ONE mile but I wanted to give it my best shot.

However, I never ran it before and I didn’t know where they would start the race. I was chatting with an older runner about injuries (what else?) and I noticed that they were not starting the second race and it was almost time.

So I asked and they said, the it started a mile into the course and finished in the same spot as the 5k.  Well, that made sense.

Would I have enough time to get to the start? Probably not but I started running.

I ran and ran but unfortunately I wasn’t there yet when I heard the gun go off to start the race.  So I moved over and let the runners go by and then continued to the start and started running.

I was last, of course, and tired since I just race a 5k plus an additional mile getting to the start.

But I did pass a few people.

Even a faster time wouldn’t have gotten me ahead the speedier ladies.

I will definitely do this race again.  I loved the course and the scenery.  Next time, maybe I’ll try to run up that  hill and now I know where the Moreau Mile race starts.

One of the reasons for choosing this race was that it was on the way to our marina so I could join my hubby who was patiently waiting.

Tuesdays on the Run: Hot Weather Running Tips

Erika @ MCM Mama Runs hosts Tuesdays on the Run with April @ Run the great wide somewhere and Patty @ My no-guilt life

This week’s topic is: Hot Weather Running Tips

What to wear:

  • Skirts, of course. You stay cooler in them than capris or shorts and they just look good.

IMG_3640

Especially SkirtSports skirts!

image

  • Tank tops or tech tee shirts

lighthouse 5k   mother-147

  • Baseball caps – they keep the hair off my neck and the sun off my face

biggest-loser-5k

  • Cool Max socks – I am blister prone so this is important for me.

20140625-122436-44676505.jpg

  • Sunglasses – I wear contacts so my eyes are really sensitive.  I wear sunglasses all the time (even if it is not sunny) except when it is dark out.

sshm2

Other essentials:

  • Nathan Hand-held water bottle – I don’t usually carry water (I just loop my runs) but when I do, I love this.

  • Don’t forget that if you chafe, in the summer when you sweat, you chafe even more.

  • And the sunscreen and bug spray (especially if you run in areas where there are ticks)

Where to run:

  • Shady areas like bike paths or parks

  • Trails

IMG_3483

  • Where there is a breeze off the water

When to run:

  • In the morning before it gets warm
before work

before work

  • In the evening when it cools down

Friday Five: National Running Day

DC_linkup

Every Friday, three DC area bloggers Mary at Mar On the Run, Cynthia at You Signed Up For What?! and Courtney from Eat Pray Run, DC to host the Friday Five linkup.  Anyone can join with their own Friday Five post (yes, it must be a Friday Five!!)  They encourage you to visit other blogs on the linkup, comment, share and engage!

This week, the theme is National Running Day.

National Running Day, held annually on the first Wednesday in June, is a day when runners everywhere declare their passion for running.

Here are my 5 reasons to run:

r4ja

1. JA is my running buddy.  He cannot run, cannot walk, cannot go to school, cannot digest his food but he is my BIGGEST SUPPORTER.

r4ican

2.  There were times that I couldn’t – broken ankle, stress fracture, broken foot.  There may be times in the future when I cannot. So when I CAN, I RUN.  I will never take this gift for granted.

DSC00617

r42bfaster

3. I am a goal-driven person. I want to get better.  I also know if I don’t run often, then it will not happen. So I keep running and hope that my finish times reflect my efforts.

stock5

r4ic

4. It’s no secret that I love ice cream. I would eat it every day especially soft ice cream in the summer.  As I get older, my metabolism must be slowing down because I have to watch what I eat for the first time.  If I run, I hope that I can watch it less.

ice_cream_cone_from_stewarts

r42feely

5. I actually feel younger now than before I started running.  People say that “I don’t look my age.” (I love those people.) But I respond that I don’t feel my age.  I credit running for that.  (I am 62 btw.)

National Running Day

In honor of National Running Day, I am linking up with Kristen and several other bloggers and answering questions about my running!

1. Why do you run?

Because it makes me feel healthier, younger and happier.

VCM Relay

2. How do you plan to celebrate National Running Day?
By running of course!!!  Probably 4 miles after work. On the rail trail

20110602-RailTrail-Sign

or maybe join a group run at FleetFeet.

3. How many miles have you run so far this year?
I’ve run 352 miles so far this year!

june 3

4. What big events do you have on the race calendar so far this year?
I have already run some big ones: Hangover Half, West Palm Beach Half, Asbury Park Half, VCM Relay.

But I still have some more planned: Walkway Half, Adirondack Distance Run, Brooklyn Half, Stockadeathon, Turkey Trot 10k and many more…

5. Before you leave for a run you must have:
iPhone for music, distance and photos, baseball cap, sunglasses if it’s sunny out, running skirt, and running shoes of course!

image

6. Do you have one favorite app to track your runs?
I always carry my iPhone so I use the Nike+ app for distance.  In races, I wear my Garmin to keep track of time and pace.

image

it’s old and big but I love it

7. Who is your favorite running partner?

Me.

I usually run by myself out of convenience.

But I do enjoy running with some women (Barbara & Judy) whom I have met online. That reminds me that I should schedule some runs with them soon.

image

image

8. What races have you ran so far this year?
18 race so far:

9. If you had to give someone one piece of advice about running what would it be?
If you’re just starting out, don’t try to run too fast too soon. Don’t give up. You will get faster. Believe in yourself.  No matter what your finish time is, you area winner.

10.  Describe your relationship with running in one word:
Perseverance.

No matter what, I don’t plan to give up.

Tuesdays on the Run: Running Breaks

Erika @ MCM Mama Runs hosts Tuesdays on the Run with April @ Run the great wide somewhere and Patty @ My no-guilt life!

This week’s topic is: Running Breaks

There are many reasons to take a break from running.

  • Injuries

This is the worst.  Injuries suck.  There is nothing you can do about them.  You just can’t run.  And you always wonder if you will again.

I have had a few.  Broken foot in 2013…

good thing I kept those critches

Stress fracture in late 2012…

my new shoe

Ankle surgery for 2 broken bones in early 2012…

now and for the next 8 weeks

  • Weather

When I first started running, I stopped in October and began again in April.  Then I realized that I could run in the cold weather, even in the snow. Running in the rain and ice.  Not for me!!

IMG_4899

Living in the Northeast, there were many days like below when I did not run.

The same can be true if you live in a warm, humid climate.  It is hard to run in those conditions.

20140803-112646-41206032.jpg

doesn’t this look inviting?

  • Life

Yup, sometimes life gets in the way.  I work full-time and I am not a morning runner. Evening and weekend work, family and friend obligations often make running impossible.

My hubby and my friends do not run so I try not to let running interfere with my relationships.

tennis instead of running

Sometimes, I’d rather be running but I know I always can’t choose running.

  • Tapering or Recovering

Also we may not want to take a break, we know we have to. Before and after a long race, I usually take at least 2 days off. I like to be active and feel like a slug when I don’t run.  But I that these old bones need a rest or there will be repercussions.

20131014-084712.jpg

best post half recovery

  • Lack of Mojo

This is a tough one.  It’s when you just don’t feel like running.

I’ve had this feeling many times but since I sign up for so many races, I know that if I don’t run, there will be consequences.

There are many reasons for lack of mojo:

  • Over training
  • Fatigue
  • Pain
  • Poor races results

We’ve all experienced these.

I have recently felt the last two.  Since my half in April, my feet have bothered me on and off.  It is not fun to run when something hurts.

pic2

ouch!!

I also have been disappointed in my finish times.  I am getting slower.  Especially for my April half which I trained for and the course was flat.  I expected to do better and I was depressed for long time afterwards.

not happy here

As a result, May was a low mileage month for me… (even though I ran a half marathon!!)

Freihofer’s Run for Women Race Recap

9:30 am

This is the only race that I’ve run every year! This is my 8th time!!!!!

My first FRW in 2008:

FRW - 2008

Due to construction, they changed the course.

They said that this course would be faster…less congested and have a less steep hill at the start and finish.

5kCoursePDF

I did run parts of the new course a few weeks ago.

11212625_591732004263023_991804346722013456_o

As with this race every year, I never know what will happen…

Anyway, I should be recovering not running a 5K.  I just race a half marathon last Sunday. As you know, my feet are not what I would like them to be (but it is what is…)

But how could I miss my 8th Freihofer’s Run for Women?

And my FIRST Freihofer Training Challenge…

5 pm group at our first meeting. There are 3 other groups

Training is a loose term. I kinda just showed up.  Monday runs were always after a Sunday long run and I never attended the Saturday runs.  I even missed the last 2 Mondays.

But I was excited to be part of it and support all the runners who would be finishing their FIRST 5k.  And see my “advanced” buddies who would hopefully PR.

As I have done every year, the day before I walked to Empire State Plaza concourse at lunch to go to the expo and pick up my race packet.

For convenience, I parked at work and walked to the start.  I do this every year.  However, this year with the new course, it was an even longer hike. Like 2 1/2 miles!

I bumped into a runner from the Challenge group and we chatted the most of the way. We cut through the Empire State Plaza to use real restrooms.

It was strange to walk down Madison Avenue and not see the race banners and not see the giant poster on the bridge.

pics from last year…

And the weather…it was HOT!! in the high 70’s, sunny and VERY humid.  Plus the race doesn’t start until 9:30 am – too late a start with this type of weather.

We got to the race location and immediately located the Challenge Group Tent and a lot of first time 5k runners. It was pretty early but I bumped into so many runners that I knew.

IMG_5802

Catching up with everyone made the time go by quicker.

In fact I was talking while the Challenge group took their group photo. To my defense, it was supposed to be taken at 9:00 am and they took it at 8:55.

IMG_5803

I even met Judith, fellow blogger and Skirt Sports Ambassador.  We both had yellow bibs so we walked to the start together.

IMG_5804

Although it was very crowded, there were about 1000 less runners than last year. I’m not sure why. (new route, weather??)

Instead of the usual singing of the national anthem, the bells from City Hall played the song.  Usually I am moved to tears, but not this time.  In fact, the whole event, seemed to lack the usual enthusiasm and excitement.

I think changing the route from Madison Ave to Washington lost a lot of crowd support.  The street is wider and there is no bridge overlook, etc.

frw3

pic from Troy Record

Anyway, with the new start, it didn’t take as long to get moving and the first hill was longer but not as steep.

frw6

pic from Troy Record

As soon as I started, I got the feeling that my legs were not as recovered as I had hoped.  They were moving but so slowly.

When I got into the park and looked at my time, I was shocked at how slow it was.  Usually mile 1 is my fastest. Yes, it was HOT and HUMID but we had a breeze at our backs.

AB-3066-XL

I am smiling because I see my friend Allison with her camera

AB-3069-XL

I continued to trudge along and couldn’t wait to walk at the first water stop around mile 1.5.

This course had you run around more of the park and it also seemed to avoid the bigger hills of the park.

You would think that I would have a faster time.

Nope.  I was dying.  I told myself that I would not walk until the next water stop.  That was around mile 2.5.

Finally we left the park and headed downhill to the finish.  Not the steep downhill that we used to have but at least it was downhill.

11390014_10204734206056106_2523342973555152804_n

I ran as fast as I could.  I was determined not to finish over 30 minutes.

And I did not.

I grabbed a bagel and some chocolate milk.  It was definitely less congested this year.  No long lines for food.

I ran into lots of runners again that I knew.  Beside Holly, everyone seem to have a disappointing finish time.

IMG_5805

with Laurie from the Turkey Trot training group.

The first time runners were so excited.  That put a smile on my face. I quickly put my disappointment in the back of mind and congratulated them on their achievement.

I walked around a bit until they posted the results and then I saw some folks that I work with.

I may not have run the race that I wanted but I still enjoyed myself. And my FEET DID NOT HURT! (until the walk home)

IMG_5819

You get what you put in.  I did not do the speed workouts so I can’t be disappointed that my time was slower than last year. I also just ran a half marathon and I am no spring chicken.

Splits:

mile 1- 9:26
mile 2- 9:38
mile 3 – 9:17
14 –  7:25

Chip time – 29:22  (that was slower than the hilly Mastodon 5k where I fell 😦 )

Afterwards, I walked back to my car (uphill for 2 1/2 miles). My feet started to hurt..a lot!

I had planned to run 7 more miles.

Instead I drove to the park and shuffled my way to 2 painful miles.  (Remember I have another half marathon in 2 weeks!!)

Here are my 5 Runfessions:

1. I am impulsive.  Some people think about what race to sign up for, weigh all the options, think some more.  Me, I just sign up and think later.

So many months ago I heard about a new race and I signed up.

The USATF-certified, out-and-back course begins at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, located on the eastern banks of the Hudson River. The route continues southwest on the flat, tree-lined William R. Steinhaus Dutchess Rail Trail, which winds through the Dutchess County towns of Poughkeepsie and Wappingers Falls. The stunning views from the elevated Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park offer runners a wonderful mid-race pick-me-up as they head across the river and onto the Hudson Valley Rail Trail in the Ulster County town of Lloyd. A return trip across the Walkway, and a final downhill sprint brings participants back to Marist and the scenic waterfront.

It is only 1 1/2 hours away so it is driveable the morning of the race.  It go overs the new bridge that I have been wanting to see.

Of course, that means leaving at 5 am. Ok, not fun but I can do that.

Here’s the bad part:

All runners must pick up their race numbers at the expo.

THERE WILL BE NO DAY OF PACKET PICK-UP.

Oops. I hadn’t thought of that. I just got back from a vacation so I don’t want to spend money on a hotel.  I work on Friday and I can’t drive 3 hours to get my bib.

I posted messages on several  running groups’ FB pages with no response.

Finally I noticed that someone posted on FB that she was running it.  So I asked her to pick up my bib.  I don’t really know her but she said yes.  I am grateful.

Next time, maybe I’ll read the fine print.

2. Ignorance is bliss.

My clothes seemed to be getting tighter and tighter.  It may have been all my birthday celebrations. But I decided to weigh myself.  Yup, I had gained 5 lbs and was at my post-vacation weight before my vacation. (I still enjoyed my vacation with deserts and drinks!!)

I came home and went to weigh myself. My scale was dead.  I think it needs a new battery.

But I haven’t replaced it.

For a while I won’t be depressed about how much I weigh…

3. Tennis won…

I ran a measly 13 miles during the 8 days I was in Naples, Florida.

it was pretty and I could have gotten up early every day…

I played tennis for about 13 hours (or more). And the first time in a year, I enjoyed tennis more than running.

Don’t worry. I’m back to normal.  I haven’t played tennis since I got home and will go back to playing once a week and running 3-4 times a week.

4. I want new feet…

They are still an issue.  I think I have solved the blister problem. I didn’t get any during my half marathon. But besides surgery, I have still googling solutions.

substitute RUN for WALK

I have two problems and they are related my inherited, poor shoe choice BUNION problem.

The barely noticeable one get inflamed and presses on a nerve so it hurts on and off (sometimes more on then off.)

The bigger one doesn’t hurt but makes my big toe turn inward.  That makes the second toe hurt and puts pressure on the ball of my foot – burning pain on longer runs.

As a result, my speed has left me and my desire to run long races is disappearing, as well.

A smart person would just stop running for awhile.

But that is not going to happen…

Tentative summer schedule: (The ones in bold I have signed up for.)

  • 6-07-15 – Betar Byway 5K & Moreau Mile
  • 6-13-15 – Walkway Half Marathon
  • 6-21-15 – Adirondack Distance 10m
  • 7-12-15 – Saratoga Springs 5k
  • 7-18-15 – Silks and Satins 5K
  • 8-1-15 – Race the Train (8.4 m)
  • 8-15-15 – Jailhouse Rock 5k

My fall schedule is even more full with a half marathon scheduled for Oct 10.

So now I am considering wrapping them with KTape or buying new shoes

thinking of these…. anyone?

or just biting my tongue and running in pain.

5. Too lazy.

I sit at work all day in front of a computer.

I eat at my desk.

I am not that busy that I couldn’t go for a walk.  Sometimes I force myself.  But most days I just sit.

Before and after work, I pass by a FREE gym. I would take 15 minutes to stop and use some of the machines to work on upper body strength. But I never do.

I always have clothes and shoes with me. Just can’t get myself motivated.

Well, that felt good…

Happy Running! Anything to runfess?
